Lack of redemption arcs in the Legendarium

Surprisingly, I can't find many, if any at all.

I mean real redemption arcs ie character is evil / has done done serious evil at the start and they put actual work and things happen and at the end they're less evil and do less evil (or none at all).

(And ideally, they don't die at the completion of the arc but separately later or not at all.)

I don't mean things like "did evil things out of trauma it ignorance" (therapy or education is a different thing from redemption. All are great, but different people need different of those.) or "did one very minor thing and is sorry" (it's not an arc, it's something smaller). I mean the real deal.

There are implied redemption arcs (elves in Mandos in general), something that feels like a referenced arc but never described (Osse), a heavy edited story that at one point kind of feels like a redemption arc (Galadriel), failed attempts (all the baddies especially Smeagol and Mairon)...

I don't remember book Boromir well, maybe he... But he's not evil, just a little weak. He does very little wrong. He's more serious than makes bad choices.

Elu Thingol sort of has an arc on "don't be racist against humans" but then dies partially at being racist against dwarves so I'm not sure that counts either.

Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, whose greatest crime is being a mean relative. I guess this counts?

Even in Numenor, nobody gets it.

I know it's a modern trend to give everyone redemption arcs, but I would expect, with all the talk about mercy and pity, to see some actual results, more results than "yay, we got the evil defeated because we were good to the bad guy". With all due respect. That's a big result too. But anyway.

I suppose Tolkien just didn't vibe with bad people. He survived the war and I guess it needed more... How to call it? More thinking on terms of "if you cross this line, you're lost". I know theoretically he didn't see it like this. But in practice, you may only go so far (and it's not far) until you're beyond repair.

I don't like it. It's not how the world works. I went further.

Also, another thing that irks me tremendously, but it's an observable rule in all Legendarium:

When your aesthetic is dark or wrong, you are beyond salvation.

You like industry? Bye. You don't like light? Bye! You look ugly (not plain, just ugly)? There might be a few exceptions of Elves who went through Angband, but generally: bye. You don't laugh and feel uneasy in company? Out to the void with you, go join Morgoth. You are depressed and not in a nice (Frodo) way, but in a cold way that makes you feel cynical? Bye. You live at the East and like sun more than noon? You're probably evil too.

I may be oversimplifying a bit, but not by much. It is a thing.

I hate this in the books. I love Tolkien's work and what he tried to do, but I feel like I'm some places he failed at it dramatically and the general feel it's not faithful to his intentions.

TANGLED BLESSINGS GAME JAM

Solo TTRPG posting again for my fellow solo game enjoyers/the solo game curious!

I’ve posted before about Tangled Blessings by @cassimothwin , a project I was so thrilled to back and play (and find in the wild a couple of times 👀). It’s a really engaging solo/duet rpg about being a student at a spooky magical school, and facing off against your rival. Also very cool to know, Tangled Blessings is a hack of the iconic game Anamnesis by @goblinmixtape (a game I mean to post about here one day if I feel I actually have anything interesting to add other than “I love it” lol).

In extremely cool news for amateur/fledgling game writers and those who never find time to participate in NaNoWriMo [meeee], Cassi Mothwin opened up a Tangled Blessings game jam on itch.io !! The game jam is for expansions to /projects inspired by Tangled Blessings. The jam is running until February 29th (leap day swag btw). I think this is such a cool idea to explore a really fun game, and I’m planning on submitting something! If you want to participate and don’t already own it, Cassi has a free preview to get you started!

Tbh i don't think the sound effects were unrealistic at all for a longform video, they reminded me a lot of curtis conner and jerm bot (at least like 2-3 years ago, havent seen theit newer stuff). For the slang thing, i have def seen medium-sized influencers using too much in a try-hard way (jack in the books comes to mind, esp a year or two ago. Which is p mean bc i do like him and he's very sweet, and it's not NEARLY as bad as madame e, but it does still get grating when you can tell it's an act). But in general yeah i agree with your take, i think they were going for a semi-sympathetic tryhard and some kind of commentary, but the execution fell flat

Respectfully, I disagree that the sound effects are used in the same way as Kurtis and Jermbot use them. granted it's not completely unrealistic that an amateur influencer would try and fail in the way madam E does to rlly capture the style while taking some of the superficial elements (like the kinds of sound effects used), but i dont think this eps case could be mistaken for a video edited by one of these guys. Again it's mostly down to amount, timing and pacing. and also every example yall send me included at least one, usually more, reverbed voice for dramatic effect, something which iirc Madam E again fails to imitate

i also watched some of jack in the books, and lankybox which @ohmytiredheart said Madam E reminded them of. Lankybox is the first where i actually hit on some clips of them using the slang in a way that sounded a bit unnatural, and i definitely did not enjoy their obnoxious video style. but again, the idea isn't that these aren't words that people use, or even that there aren't influencers who use them wrong or too much, but that no one actually talks like madam e even when they're faking for clout, and thus the commentary falls flat, like you said

I'm going to focus on non-canonically proven "Whom is related to Whom" theories, so I'll put in the probable reason why it came to be as well:

Hisashi Midoriya is related to Enji Todoroki/Endeavor

Because fire breathing and making fire is pretty close, in a way.

Izuku Midoriya is related to Hisashi Midoriya

Inko Midoriya is related to Nana Shimura and/or Reiko Yanagi

Because quirks be similar,

And the similar hairstyle of the former 2, but lots of the cast uses a similar hair style at times so it could just be the Horokoshi's preference.

Ochaco Uraraka is related to Nana Shimura and Tenko Shimura/Tomura Shigaraki

This one is a theory I don't see much of as compared to others, but it makes sense why it isn't, especially after the reveal of how the Decay quirk actually came to be;

At least she still could be related to Nana, and these 2's interaction most likely going to result in a deadly game of tag is a mental image I can't unsee (they're both have a 5-pointer activation requirement).

I also saw it in a fic where Ochaco saw a photo of Nana and told Izuku she's related to her, and Izuku realises multiple times that there are more people he know that are related to one another than he thought.
