The tl;drs of this very long post, which is about Gideon’s arc and her relationship to Harrow:

-Gideon’s arc in gtn is a corruption arc because tlt is not just goth but Gothic

-Gideon “forgives” Harrow because of Trauma and that’s definitely not the endpoint of how she feels about Harrow or their past

-The narrative knows what it’s doing

When Gideon says “For the Ninth!” as she dies, and thinks “this is the loyalty they always said I lacked, this is me making good” that’s not growth, that’s part of the tragedy of the moment. Like, the Ninth does not deserve her allegiance! It is, as Gideon was the first to remind us, rotten to the core. When she dies, it’s for Harrow, and her saying it’s for the Ninth does represent on some level that she’s come to new understanding about who Harrow is and how Harrow views herself *as* the Ninth, but like this is, I mean. Bad. Harrow herself does not deserve Gideon’s loyalty! Gideon gives it to her because it is a relief. Gideon is very good, yes, but the forgiveness is a response to trauma. The second Harrow shows even the slightest vulnerability or regard for Gideon, Gideon is eager to make amends because she has been starved for any positive association to others for her entire life, and Harrow was literally the only peer she ever had to associate with. She correctly identified that resistance to Ninth society was vital to her survival and selfhood, but also that shit is exhausting. That resistance is also partially formed by that society conveying to her: we have no place for you, we have no use for you as you are, and that makes you hateful to us.

Her response to Harrow and the cavalier role then is pretty classic! It is a relief to have a place, to be able to stop fighting, to give herself over to a structure sold to her as one in which she can support and be supported, to resolve the central conflict and most complicated relationship of her life. I maintain that you the reader are also supposed to feel initially relieved and even cheered by Gideon and Harrow growing closer and then gradually unsettled when Gideon embraces cavalierhood and the increasingly invasive demands of the trials, and has her mindset adjusted in increments toward sacrifice. To feel her thoughts turn in this direction is alarming! This is purposeful, and it is purposefully mixed in with good feelings, the same good feelings that Gideon is getting, to distract from and inoculate you against what is happening just as Gideon is inoculated against it.

In addition, Canaan House is a very particular crucible. This is not only the first time that Gideon has ever been bombarded with new people and experiences, but also the first time she’s faced these unknown external threats, which pushes her to unite with the familiar (Harrow) against them. Her past and present environments have made it so that the compassion she comes to feel for Harrow gets bound up in the idea of being loyal to her house, the ‘contract’ of her new role, and the positive interaction it gives her until the idea of her offering her life to Harrow is not simply necessary in the moment but good and right. Redeeming, even, when we as readers know she has nothing she needs redemption for. 

Gideon is so very angry when she comes to in htn, and it is not merely anger at those who have wronged Harrow or anger at Harrow for endangering herself. On the First, she made a simple deal: her life for relief from the emotional state she had to live it in. Forgiveness for some kind of peace. And when she wakes up that exchange is refuted. Gideon frames Harrow’s actions as a rejection of herself out of low self-esteem but also in an attempt to deal with unresolved anger she has towards Harrow, anger that cannot fit into the cavalier role she wants to embody, anger that she attempted to trade away but in actuality can’t. Because the role she was sold, the type of relationship the cavalier and necro is supposed to be, is ultimately false. It encompasses very real and deep relationships, as we have seen, but the framework uses these real elements to its own ends, the Empire’s ends, and despite its proclamations of mutual care the relationship is always at the cavalier’s expense.

This is what it means to say Gideon’s arc in gtn is a corruption arc. It’s not that she becomes “bad,” it’s that the corrupting forces of the narrative have reached out and altered her, worn her down, seduced her even. This is Gideon’s first contact with the wider Empire, in the seat and seed of its wretched power, and it has used her goodness, her capacity for connection (and yes for forgiveness as well!) against her to further ensnare her, to draw her in line with itself. And then she dies for it, as it demands! Wow. And the we have the other side of that, which is when Gideon says “For the Ninth!” she’s signaling to Harrow that she has come to value what Harrow values, just as Harrow herself, watching in horror, has come to realize her values are very fucked up.

And Harrow has indeed realized that by that time! Harrow really does travel such a distance in gtn, but this is largely obscured from us just the same as plot details are in the book, by the limits of Gideon’s perception. And let me be clear: this is a feature, not a bug. It is not a weakness. It is vital! Integral! To the above, and all it entails for Gideon as a character and the overall themes of the series, that Gideon forgive Harrow without Harrow having “earned” it or made real amends. The fact that she does conveys to us everything I’ve just been talking about!

Furthermore, this story is in conversation with a rather particular type of Christianity, but Gideon’s Jesus parallels are even more widely applicable. Forgiveness is kind of a whole theme with that guy, and the book is also plenty interested in what it costs for a human to forgive as divinely as scripture demands (to forgive as the bond demands, as the empire demands). In some ways there are good things that may come of it, sure, but it is not a purely redemptive force for the giver or receiver. It does not necessarily resolve.

I myself can’t say that I ship Gideon and Harrow in the way people traditionally think of shipping, nor as I have traditionally shipped other characters. Still, I reject the notion that that way of relating to each other is not a central part of the questions the book is asking. Like before, when I was talking about Gideon finding something to believe in in the way the adept/cavalier bond is sold to her—although we see that bond encompass many different types of relationships it is in Gideon and Harrow’s case speaking to how romantic love (much like that forgiveness!) is not immediately and entirely redemptive. I mean, Muir does say the series is about how love can be redemptive, but I think can be is the operative phrase here, in that it’s also first demonstrating the ways it’s not, or at least not always the way we think it will be--the limits and then the power. Trying to set that aspect of the relationship aside (like a “sisters” route or something similar) is a weak and queasy side-stepping of the issue.

Remember that interview where Muir says something along the lines of like, she didn’t write it as necessarily romantic but definitely homoerotic? Yeah. 

Despite all that I do want to make it clear that I hope Gideon and Harrow work it out in the end. Just don’t assume the narrative does not understand what working it out might entail. And who knows? I might have the read all wrong. Maybe Muir doesn’t understand what she’s doing. But I feel pretty compelled by the textual evidence.

3 of 3 - I wonder why eren went this far, all for the sake of this "Supreme goal" of ending the curse, and now i think about it, if they'd went with yelena's plan (only destroying allied forces) sure the curse wouldn't have broken since mikasa wouldn't have ended up killing eren since the corps would have agreed to partial rumbling, yet the island could have kept titan's powers that would have probably saved it from being completely destroyed.

I think this is kind of a key part of the point of the story.

Eren probably could've chosen a different outcome to stick with, but as he said, he chose this one because it lead to the erasure of the Titan curse:

It could've been different if you think about it logically.

But Eren's choice to do this isn't logical or rational, it's solely based on what he sees as the way to freedom, which is erasure of the Titans. That endpoint he saw he liked the most.

He also only saw that final outcome, not the long-term consequences of it because he only saw to the point where he died. It's tied to perspective in that sense, too.

Personally, I even think a much less death-heavy solution could've been reached if the Marleyan government was toppled in a more subtle way that doesn't involve bringing out the Titans.

The SL seemed to be able to infiltrate Marley just fine. Eliminating the big wigs really didn't seem like such a huge effort.

From there, the government could've slowly been democratized, the internment camps could've slowly been dismantled and the human experimentation dropped. All of this could've been fully revealed to the world: the Titans are a result of horrid human experiments.

But most of the key players didn't want that. Eren and Zeke and Yelena weren't interested in actually dismantling Marley's system nor were any of the other Eldians or any of the Marleyan warriors.

A lot of the characters didn't see that just doing everything to dismantle what was created by Marley could go a long way to a better future. They didn't see the real issue.

Hange was the only one who truly tried to do something given the circumstances.

It was entirely the characters' mindsets shaped by their experiences that lead to this entire thing.

And I find this fascinating and again one of my favourite things about the story.

The moment this was pulled with Reiner's mindset in chapter 42, I was pretty much instantly fascinated. That reveal would not have happened if it weren't for Reiner's mental state at the time.

Equally, whether the kid in these extra pages will go inside that tree will depend on whether he knows what it is, whether he knows the history of the Titans and perhaps how desparate he is because as you say, we at least know Paradis is in ruins. Considering how overgrown the ruins seem to be maybe the kid is just a clueless explorer.

But I also feel like a lone kid would not just randomly happen upon a completely empty Paradis Island and he probably is from Paradis.

We don't really know.

I personally think the kid is a descendant of Mikasa because he has her hair.

Man, I find myself really appreciating those added pages.

Do you think there’s a chance the new mass effect game will have Shepard or BioWare ended the Shepard arc already?:(

Hi Nonnie, this answer became a bit long so it’s under a cut.

Oooh, I think that the next game is so far away, with so little known about it, so much likelihood of things changing during development as they discuss and try out different concepts, so many different hopes from people for what form they want it to take, and so many options for what it could possibly be that at this point it’s completely up in the air, anyone’s guess and extremely difficult to say. They could do:

Mass Effect: Andromeda 2 (Ryder’s story continues)

new PC in the Andromeda galaxy

new PC in a new galaxy

a prequel to the MET

MET sidequel

a Post-Reaper War story

something involving Shepard

new PC in the Milky Way

some combination of the above

when I think about it I feel a lil dizzy and I have no idea at all which thing I’d personally prefer. 

I will say that Shepard’s arc really does ‘feel’ like it reached a natural and conclusive end, with the storybeats there hitting notes of finality. Shepard themselves can also be alive, dead or physically disintegrated and now a weird Sheaper-AI... Those are wildly different existence states to try and reconcile if they were opting to somehow continue Shepard’s story from the ME3 endpoint, and that’s without touching on the wildly divergent states the Milky Way galaxy can be in final-choice-depending (do they canonize a particular ending? Do they minimize the impacts of the final choice to make it less divergent? Do they set it so far in the future that it becomes functionally meaningless?). That last part is a whole other topic in and of itself - and due to the way that went down and audience response to it at the time, whatever they do with that issue, however they try to resolve it (in our hypothetical ‘Shepard’s story continues’ scenario) it’s going to be like, A Thing. What the endings meant for the Milky Way as a setting is a big part of the reason why the next ME game had to take place in a whole new galaxy far away after all, so it ties back to why they took us to Andromeda in the first place. Then there’s the worry that doing anything further with Shepard risks doing Shep a disservice if they eff it up, and in that way kinda damaging Shepard’s legacy. After an entire trilogy spanning dozens of worlds, involving dozens of characters and saving the galaxy in an all-out-war, where do you go from there? How do you do Shepard justice? There are also the folks who just want to let Shepard rest, and those who are really dissatisfied with the plot threads that got left hanging for Ryder and co, and the lack of DLC there, after what happened with MEA.

There’s a critter in the concept art that we’ve seen that looks like a furry pyjak, but the Initiative brought pyjaks to Andromeda. There’s a Normandy-like ship in two of the images, but the Normandy is frigate, which is a type of ship of which there are many. In the 2020 image at the bottom, the two figures on the right are actually the silhouettes of Thane and Mordin from the ME2 squad selection screen, but given the nature of concept art (it’s supposed to help devs get an early feel for the mood and feel of the game in question in a time when loads of things change, and we shouldn’t get too hung up on specifics) I find it difficult to see that fact and conclude “Looks like the next game is going to have Thane and Mordin and therefore possibly Shepard” in it. Nor do I think we should. The images shown could have been thrown out as ideas since, or when mocking them up the artist was making use of existing assets to save time or just since it’s meant to evoke a feel it doesn’t really matter which tiny lil silhouette they use, the point being to ‘say’ “Varied crewmates are exploring this planet” with the image. Not to say that I don’t enjoy and actively take part in super-overanalyzing and wildly speculating from such images, because I do lol. :D

It was lovely how in the N7 Day cast and crew reunion panel basically all of the cast were essentially like “MET was amaaazing, we loved it sooo much, we’re here if you ever want to do more with that BioWare wink wink plzzz” lol. JHale says that she never calls the end of the MET “the end” but instead “the end of ME3″, because she’s always like “I’M HERE BIOWARE LOL”. Raphael Sbarge at one point during it asked the BioWare team if there’s ever been a point where they thought about doing more MET DLC content or some kind of revival of it and the response was: “We’re legally obligated not to say, sorry, we’re going through a tunnel right now, oh nooo bad reception!!” NB I don’t think we should read too far into that comment there from the team, it’s one part fun banter and one part they wouldn’t be able to confirm one way or the other in regards to that question. Like I imagine their NDAs/contracts don’t allow them to say “We’re never going back to Shepard and crew” anymore than they’d allow them to say “[MET stuff hint]”, if that makes sense.

Pros of the possibility: Shepard is beloved, nostalgia, seeing what became of the Milky Way in the aftermath of the Reaper War, MEA wasn’t nearly as popular

tl;dr extremely hard to say and who knows. I’d guess at it not being a continuation of Shepard’s arc though: lots of variables, the ending incident, and Shep feels complete. If it hypothetically was I guess I’d short-circuit and then hope they do it right/well. I don’t know what I want and I’d be down for anything, because Mass Effect. I do miss the Milky Way as a setting a lot in a general sense.

Joining the Game Late: S8E4 “The Last of the Starks”

Synopsis

Everyone pays tribute to the last episode’s named dead. Gendry gets legitimized but strikes out with Arya, Tyrion still sucks at being consoling, Bran is still cryptic, and Tormund gets cuddly with Jon much to Dany’s displeasure. The writers trip on the finish line with Sansa’s rape subplot. Brienne loses her virginity to a drunken one night stands that means less than it looks like. Jon can’t get laid because his aunt his jealous of him. Tyrion wants to starve out King’s Landing, while Varys just wants to murder Daenerys because of Jon’s cock. The Stark sisters learn about Jon; Arya sets off for one last revenge killing spree while Sansa shares her sedition plans with Tyrion. Bronn threatens the Lannister brothers for a raise. Jon wants to go north with Tormund but gives his boyfriend custody of Ghost instead, and also Gilly’s pregnant with a non-incest baby. The Iron Fleet attack and take down Dany’s other extra dragon and kidnap her BFF - and no one else, apparently. The people of King’s Landing are good little human shields and trust Cersei now. There are tense negotiations, featuring a beheading and a kill command that will become extremely relevant soon.

Commentary

Alas, the infamous Starbucks cup must have been edited out of home releases. (Un)fortunately the various ways in which this episode starts to derail can’t be removed so easily.

That’s not to say that I can’t see what the writers were aiming for with some of their more controversial choices. Jaime sleeps with Brienne on a drunken impulse, so his decision to leave her to run back to Cersei is less completely inexplicable than I thought it was going to be (plus, I’ve been kind of tracking this since Season 3 as you know). Sansa’s terrible comment apparently confirming that Ramsay was right that he’d always be a part of her is slightly - and I do mean slightly - tempered by a line from Daenerys indicating how Sansa has been hardened by her trauma. This line is delivered to Jon and not followed up on so its overall value is questionable, but at least the showrunners have remembered that in their continuity Dany is also a victim of marital rape and thus has something in common with her rival, both women who’ve found the strength to become leaders in response to the horrific circumstances visited upon them by men they trusted. Arya circling back around to a Lannister-esque familial loyalty makes sense for her specifically, as she’s always been a lone wolf (pun somewhat intended) with little need for many allies or social niceties - and related to that, I do like how she turns down Gendry’s marriage proposal, returning to her recurring “It’s not me” line. Hell, I even get why Tormund has a stupid little thing for Brienne that goes nowhere, because otherwise he’d just be looking gayer and gayer these past two seasons to the point that you’d expect him and Jon to be doing a lot more than hugging when it’s time for them to bid each other farewell. I call the subtext like I see it and the ending vindicates me on this, ha.

Even so, it’s easy to see where the show is just stumbling to reach a somewhat coherent endpoint. How is it that Missandei is the only person captured in the Iron Fleet’s attack? What was the point of killing her only as an unnecessary demonstration that Cersei is shortsighted and violent when she feels threatened, except to set up Dany’s big breakdown in the next episode? Are the people of King’s Landing so xenophobic that they’d take up Cersei’s invitation to hole up in the Red Keep as protection from Daenerys’s armies? Why does Tyrion attempt yet again to act as though Cersei’s pregnancy will motivate her to avoid bloodshed, as if the show hadn’t previously delved into how her maternal feelings derive primarily into how she views her children as an extension of herself? What the hell is Varys -

Ok, Varys deserves a paragraph on his own. I’m not sure I’ve ever talked much about him in any detail; he’s not an easy character to get a handle on, nor he is a personal favorite. Tyrion pokes at that very opacity here by asking Varys what he means when he says he acts in the interests of “the realm,” particularly as doing so has led to him betraying several of the rulers he’d previously advised and has him now plotting to assassinate Daenerys and raise up Jon in her place. Varys has a point that Jon is bizarrely the more charismatic of the two, and also that it’s an unfortunate reality of the patriarchy they live in that Jon’s claim to the throne would be more accepted by the lords of Westeros than Dany’s would. At the same time though his philosophy about choosing a ruler who doesn’t want to rule is asinine - didn’t they already go through this with Robert Baratheon, who was a fantastic warrior and a fantastically disinterested king? - and furthermore it’s not like he even really knows Jon apart from what Tyrion and others have told him about the man. I don’t even buy that this supposed incredible leadership quality is something that we the audience should be able to see in Jon, because based on everything he’s done across GoT’s entire run I don’t get that impression at all. Whenever he’s been put in charge of anything his knack for heroically dumb behavior has gotten him all manner of insubordination up to and including an assassination. That doesn’t inspire me with confidence, and I’m glad the show avoids putting him on any throne in the end, but why is Varys so ready to betray his queen and get burned alive?

Ah, well. It really is rushing to that ending that explains a lot of this. I’ve got the urge to do the same, just to be done with it.

“So, what you're telling me,” You said between bites of dried stockfish. “Is that this goddess, your sister, was around for like, three thousand years, and was apparently a favorite of the entire army. You have those little bits of fresco painting to show me. But in the span of like, a few decades, everyone had forgotten her?”

“Or, at least, refused to speak of her, yes.” Loki said, passing a plate of buttered, dark bread your way.

It was just the two of you this time, in a little room beside the kitchens. You could hear the cooks working on the other side of the wall.

“I'm a bit leery to show you the frescoes just yet.' Loki said. “They're extremely unpleasant, and frankly, embarrassing. I brought several bits of the paintings that came afterwards, and those are much nicer. For one thing, I'm in them.”

You smiled indulgently. “That's the important part, right? Just how much stuff did you grab on your way out?”

“Oh, quite a bit.” Loki waved his fork on the air. “Practically everything I passed by, actually. I have quite a bit of room, though I admit, I stretched things a bit. Transporting living things that way is rather difficult.”

“Living things?”

“Leynarodd. The pegasus, a few others. Certain objects I thought would come in handy later, such as Gungnir. A few books, a few artworks. All artifacts now.”

You scooped lingonberry preserves onto a little cup of skyr. “But the point I was making was, there are plenty of your people that are old enough to remember her. So how come nobody ever said anything? Why were there no precautions taken to prevent her return?”

“From what we've been able to put together, Hela did have many supporters, despite her murderous tendencies. She embodied the endpoint of all that Asgard valued, the culmination of the 'noble warrior culture'. When our father decided to change his tactics to more peaceful means, there was, initially, a split in support. The commoners supported Odin; it seems they were a bit weary of being sent off to die in endless wars, no matter how much honor it brought their families. The nobles supported Hela, as they were loathe to let go of even an ounce of their power, no matter the consequences.

Then, apparently, Hela did some things that lost her all support. Brunnhilde says she attempted a coup, and murdered everyone in the palace as she went-hundreds of people, including many of her noble supporters. Heimdall remembers, and has hinted that she did something even worse, but he will not talk about it, no matter what we do.

And that's how most of the older Asgardians are. Those who are old enough to remember will not speak of it. Those who were there went about erasing her name and hiding her from sight, as if it would somehow make her wither away into nothing. We can't force them to talk, not yet. The people are traumatized after all this. Some of them saw their lives destroyed twice by her. We will simply have to wait until someone is ready.”

Loki grabbed a small bunch of grapes, and split them between you.

“As for precautions, well, I don't know exactly why Father failed so badly there. But he always did seem to have a blind spot when it came to his children.” Loki snorted quietly. “Specifically, the left side. The more I think about it the more it makes sense that he reacted so severely to Thor and myself when we displayed a lack of concern for the lives of others. He must have seen her, growing within us. He must have been terrified that we would take the same path, that all of his children would share the same fate...”

He slammed his fist on the table, suddenly angry. You jumped.

“All he had to do was say one thing about it, and all of this could have been avoided! He didn't even have to tell me, if it came down to it. He could have told Thor, and Thor would have told me! That's probably why he didn't. After Hela, he probably couldn't bring himself to trust even in his own children. But all of this, literally everything happened because he just wouldn't tell us what he needed to!”

His moods were still mercurial as ever. You might not ever get used to it, but you'd better try. You reached out and took the hand he had slammed down. He blinked in surprise, all anger draining from his face. He uncurled his fingers just enough for you to dip yours into his palm.

“Forgive me.” He said quietly. “That was unbecoming.”

“This is a part of my job too, isn't it?” You asked. “To help out with this kind of thing?”

“Technically, yes. Council is a part of the job description. I hesitate to foist that burden entirely off onto you however. I am...difficult at times, and you are not without your own traumas.”

“That's true, but you've dealt with them pretty well so far.” You pointed out.

“I have, considering how many of them involve hitting me in the face.” He chuckled at your mumbled apology. “I am not worried about it. And you have nothing to fear either. My fury could burn the very stars, and I would still never raise a hand to you.”

“Yeah, I kinda figured you weren't the type. You seem above that kind of thing.”

“Do I?” He asked, sounding pleased. “Though if a woman were to come at me with a sword, I would not just stand there and get stabbed. We've no shortage of ladies with swords in Asgard, and then there is Freya, of course...”

“Yeah? The book said she was a fertility goddess?”

“Hmph. That book was kinder to her than it was to me, but it was still incorrect. Oh, she and her brother are connected to fertility, of course. Freyr is the fertility of the tilled earth, that is well kept and fruitful. Freya is the fertility of the battlefield. Blood makes the grass grow, and she reaps a crop of the dead.”

“Uh...poetic?”

“I'm saying she is a battle goddess as well. Associations with war and combat are also overwhelmingly common among Aesir. The twins make a particularly effective pair; while Freyr is no pacifist, he also dislikes violence for its own sake. However, so great is his connection to life, that the life-bringers, that is to say, women, can never come to harm in his presence. That works out very well for Freya, who relishes battle as much as any Asgardian, and can lead her armies to battle without the slightest fear when her brother is around. She doesn't show much fear when he isn't around either.”

“But isn't that how Hela was?” You asked.

“Oh no, not at all. Freya loves battle, not slaughter. She does not bring combat to those who are not involved with it, she accepts surrender, she knows mercy. Hela would kill anybody, and once she started, she wouldn't stop until the last drop pf blood was spilled. She didn't spare anyone. She intended to murder every soul in Asgard, and was on her way to doing so when I brought the ship to liberate them.”

“You did that too?” You asked. Why wasn't he still king? “You know, for a guy who attacked my planet, you sure are some hero.”

Loki preened. “I take my responsibilities to Asgard very seriously. Not always in a straightforward or officially sanctioned way, granted, but sometimes a more obfuscated method is necessary. Sometimes, you have to trick people into doing things that are good for them. And sometimes, that makes you seem like a villain. And sometimes, you think you know how to do something that would be good for everyone, but it turns out you were a bit...overzealous in your efforts, and perhaps it wasn't such a good idea after all. And that can make you a villain as well.

Well, what I'm trying to say is that, both my brother and I have done decidedly villainous things, for reasons we felt were right. So it stands to reason, that we might both be capable of heroic things as well. And while I have not yet shown your planet anything but that villainous face, it is very likely that I eventually will.”

“Oh. Does that mean you've changed your mind about us? Most people think you kinda hate us.”

“I do not hate you.” He shrugged. “Nor your people. I don't think much of humanity, that's true. It's rather hard to, considering your relative briefness. Your constant moving and changing also makes it difficult to keep up, so why bother? Individuals, perhaps, but humanity as a whole? I'm not really interested. However...” He said, acknowledging your scowl with a tilt of the head. “Asgard is now Midgard. And so, to protect Asgard, I must also stand for Midgard. I will protect your mad planet, and you along with it.”

Heat washed across your cheeks. “That's, uh, quite a declaration.”

The two of you continued eating in silence, both ruminating over what Loki had just said. It ran over and over in your head, keeping your face hot. He would protect you, eh? Your whole world. Sure, he'd said it was for Asgard, but he'd made it sound so personal.

And the more magic you learned, the more you could help. If aliens invaded, you could teleport them into space! If robots attacked, you could...teleport them into space! Hey, it was fine to be a one-trick pony, if that one trick always worked.

“So, uh, what do we do next?” You asked. There were comfortable silences, and there were uncomfortable silences. This was beginning to feel like the latter, and you didn't want him to regret what he had said.

“The most important and prolific duty of royalty.” He stated gravely. “Paperwork.”

“Paperwork?”

“Paperwork.” He repeated. “Endless paperwork. That's what royalty is. Beneath all palaces, luxuries, and power, is a foundation of paperwork. I hope your eyes do not tire easily, because I want you to aid me with it. It will help you to understand the people a bit more.”

It made some kind of sense. Knowing what the people needed, or what they considered important enough to contact their most important people about, could tell you a lot about their values.

A small commotion could be heard rising from the kitchen next door; a great deal of laughter, complaints, and exclamations.

“What's that all about?” You wondered.

“Shall we investigate?”

The entire kitchen staff was gathered around a crate, chattering. A tired porter leaned against a chopping table, demolishing some kind of drink.

“The suppliers must have found something unusual this time.” Loki said. “They are mostly wondering what it is, and how they can prepare it.”

“Lemmie see.” You said. “If it's an Earth food, I might know what it is.”

Loki raised his voice over the din, requesting one of the strange foods be handed over for inspection. A green oblong, tightly wrapped in leaves, was presented to you.

You took a single look and burst out laughing in delight. “That's just corn!” You exclaimed.

“You're certain?” He asked. “I've had corn before, you know. It's tiny and yellow.”

“I'm not playing a prank or anything, look.” You stripped back the husks, causing several of the kitchen staff to move back in surprise at the sudden, rubbery sound. You proudly showed everyone the milky white and yellow kernels underneath.

“This grows all around where I live. Miles and miles of it. This is some particularly good stuff. Cook it right, and you will have something fantastic!”

The cook asked something. Loki answered with what you had just said, and the cook asked something else.

“She wants to know how you suggest it be prepared.” Loki said, not bothering to mask his own curiosity.

“Oh boy. Okay, so you take off these outer husks, okay? Put them in the compost, feed them to the animals, whatever. These inner husks you just pull down, but don't tear off. Now you get the silk off, these little strings, you see? That part can get messy. You can compost those too.”

The entire group watched you closely, as Loki translated your instructions, but you were so used to doing this that you could get the silk off in just a few passes.

“Now that you've got the corn clean, and there's no worms or fungus, you can just rub a little butter all over the kernels. Then you pull these husks back up around the corn to hold the moisture in. Cook this just like it is on really high heat, for about half an hour. Once that's done, pull the rest of the husks off, rub on more butter, sprinkle over a bit of salt and pepper, and it's done! It's really, really good that way, and you can cut off the kernels after that, or just eat it right off the cob, if your teeth are good.”

Some of the staff began stripping husks, while the cook thanked you for the information.

“Now, this is sweet corn, and it's only available for a month or so, probably less here in Iceland. Otherwise, you can sometimes find frozen cobs, and canned or frozen kernels. There's also harder, dryer corn, some for popping, and some for grinding into cornmeal. You can make different things from that.”

“I'm looking forward to dinner now.” Loki said, as you headed back to his rooms. “If your taste in corn is anything like your taste in baking, I've much to anticipate.”

“You're very sweet. I got good at that because it was a precious resource during the, uh...Well, the dent corn would keep, but the sweet corn wouldn't. So we ate it in big batches, and we all got pretty good at cooking it. The butter was pretty rare though. Only a few local cows made it through.”

“I see...Does it bother you to eat it?” Loki asked.

“Oh no, not at all. It was one of the only good times in that whole year. Properly cooked corn is amazing, and it was one of the few times I wasn't hungry.”

Loki patted your shoulder gently. “You won't have to worry about that again.”

You felt full.

“So why is it that the request for more concrete gets priority over the request for more tile grout?” You asked.

“Tiling is for decoration or waterproofing, and usually only in certain rooms of a building. Concrete has wider applications, and on the tighter budget and time frame we're currently working in, we need to get as much done as possible. So the tile grout will have to wait until winter.”

“What do we do in winter, anyway? I assume the snow is too high for construction.”

“The snow does get very high. Most of the construction workers either work on the interiors of buildings, or they practice their other skills. Winter will be the time when the painters go back to work, the jewelers and smiths go back to full time, the textilers can get a great deal done. Once the construction is done, all those people will go back to their regular jobs. That will be several years though. You and I will be able to pass the hours with study, and of course, ever more paper work.”

He stacked the materials requests neatly in their 'approved' or 'rejected' piles, all of the edges perfectly even.

“Now we have...Ugh, another one of these.” He snorted, annoyed.

“What? What's the deal?”

“The Vinnalings request that I meet with their daughter. I wonder if they mean the widow, or the one who is still practically a child?” Loki said sourly, laying the paper down on the rejected pile. “I'm sure they are both perfectly nice, but I'm not interested in playing favorites among the noble families right now. I'm certainly not interested in being wed to some noble I don't even really know.”

“Is that what it's about?”

“Yes.” His sigh was closer to a groan. “It is irritating. I long ago tired of parents who use their children for political maneuvering. I suppose I won't be able to avoid it forever, but I'm avoiding it for now. And even when I feel ready, I certainly won't be marrying someone who is still in mourning for her husband, nor someone who is still a literal child! Maybe I can't expect love, but I can at least demand someone I can get along with.”

“That's...really sad.” You said, slightly distressed. He sounded so resigned to it. Fear of a loveless, arranged marriage must have been hanging over his head for centuries.

“That's royalty. Part of it. We all dream of a love match, but we know that's tremendously rare. Knowing that it's one more thing my father got to have, that I will not is just so...Well, I've accepted it, I just expected that it would happen to Thor first. I don't know how many of these he gets, but I know they come across my desk far too often.”

“Then ignore them. You're building a kingdom right now, and I think it would be obvious you don't have time for this.” You suggested.

“Oh? Is that official advice?” Loki teased.

“Yup. Look, not to pass judgment on a culture I know very little about, but you guys are way too advanced for something as barbaric as forced marriages. Most of this 'primitive' planet did away with that many years ago.”

Loki quirked a dark, perfect eyebrow. “That is very judgmental. However, I agree with you. And so does Thor, and so did my father. He began phasing such things out a short time before he married my mother, which was probably the driving force behind it. I continued his work during the time I was king, and Thor has expressed his intention to do the same. Thor...also has his reasons. Well, the tradition has only really continued among the noble families.”

“I've never known anyone who was in a miserable relationship, who could also work as effectively as they could when they were in a happy one, or even alone. You have to be as effective as you possibly can be, right? And, you know, if you keep putting it off in favor of building up the city, maybe you and the king can get more laws prohibiting it in place, and neither of you will have to worry about it.”

Loki chuckled. “It's very cute when you try to be conniving. You're so blunt about it. Like an eager child.”

“Hey!” You exclaimed. “I'm trying here!”

“I know you are, and your concern for my future happiness is appreciated. It will likely be many more years before this city is anywhere near done, with all the hurdles we must leap. Look at this one; a request for more supplies for the horses. What do you think?”

“Do it.” You said quickly. “Buildings don't need to eat, and they won't die under bad conditions either.”

“Agreed.” Loki said. “Good to know we are in accordance on that as well.”

“What kind of hurdles are you talking about anyway? Enough housing for everybody, right?”

“Yes, and adapting to the extreme weather of Earth, the unfamiliar flora and fauna. The culture shock from outside, the culture war from inside. Convincing humanity that we have a place here, convincing Asgardians that we must find a place here. The inevitable consequences of humans and Asgardians intermingling. The rebuilding of our technology, our prosperity. Learning the technology of Earth. Preserving our culture without rejecting outside influence. Adapting our culture as to not cause undue conflict. Not isolating ourselves entirely. How to relate to the incredible diversity of humankind.”

“Geez.”

“Those are all big picture items, that will likely take several human generations to achieve. But we will achieve them. We must. Your presence here with speed some of this along, I believe. When the people see your accomplishments, see that you are not the primitive savage that some Asgardians fear humans are, then they will learn to accept. Your coming here was most fortuitous.”

You snorted. “What's fortuitous? You spirited me away!”

“Are you still angry?” He asked.

“...No. I'm okay now. I just hope I can live up to all the faith you've put in me.”

Loki shuffled through a few more papers. “That's the thing about advice. If I feel you are very wrong about something, I can just ignore you.”

“Rude.” You mumbled. Loki smirked, but the expression faltered as he looked over the next paper. “What? What is it? Another date request?”

“The trial will be conducted in two weeks.” Loki said. “Both you and I are to be there to give testimony.”

You shivered. “Oh.” You really, really wanted to get all of that behind you, but you also really didn't want to be in that murderer's presence ever again. Loki placed his hand on your arm.

“Do not fear. He is powerless now. This will be the last time anyone ever has to see him. He will go to prison, and he will be forgotten. You will never have to waste a thought on him after this.”

You knew you would though.

The near-mythical power of cutting yourself some slack

Time. It’s the one thing we all want that is always fleeting and impossible to replenish. The luckiest among us realize the value of time in their teen years, but most don’t appreciate it’s true nature until some great loss occurs in the mid to late twenties. Whatever the case may be for you, it’s likely you feel your time to quote/unquote ‘make it’ in music is constantly slipping through your fingers. Every day it seems there is a new, younger hitmaker finding success. That yodeling kid from Wal-Mart went from viral fame to releasing a (really freaking good) hit single distributed by a major label in under a month — all before he’s old enough to take a driver’s education course.

Here’s the thing you have to remember: You don’t have to find success at a young age to become successful in life. There are no age restrictions on happiness. The digital age has presented new opportunities for overnight success, as has reality television, but that kind of exposure the associated success comes from chance, and you cannot rely on luck to get you through this life. At the risk of sounding pessimistic, it just doesn’t make sense. The universe cares not for your flights of fancy and the things you wish you were, nor will it ever bend over backward to assist you in the day to day struggles of being a functional human being.

So, if viral success isn’t the ideal path, then the only one that remains is the same one traveled by every person working in music today. Success in this industry is, by and large, earned through years of handwork and dedication to your craft. It’s the result of treating others well and always doing your part, regardless of whether or not others did the same. Success, for lack of a better description, is the sum of everything you’ve done over the entirety of your time in music.

With this in mind, you may think you need to work harder than ever. We’ve been conditioned to believe that any waking hour not spent working on something that helps us inch closer to our goals is time wasted. After all, someone somewhere is no doubt chasing the same dream as you or I and they’re probably working on something incredible, right? That’s what my brain tells me.

The fact of the matter is that whether you pull an all-nighter tomorrow or not isn’t nearly as important as your longterm commitment to this field. Success in music, especially the kind of success that leads to a legitimate career (with benefits, etc.), takes time. There is no way around it. There is also no rush because there is no endpoint. There will never be a day when you reach a professional peak, and the sky suddenly disappears. There will always be another thing to make, pitch, sell, or whatever it is you wish to do with your life. Always.

Do not be afraid to rest. Take the night off if you need it. Heck, unless you’re getting paid to do something feel free to take as much time as you need whenever you need it. Those who are indeed called to this industry can never stay away for long, and in time you’ll feel that passion you’ve been searching for return. This journey we are on lasts a lifetime if you want it to, but you have to take care of yourself. No one else can do that for you.

have not felt good at this in a long time & almost cannot believe i spent a good 2 years of uni earnestly believing i was an intelligent person - i might have set some kind of record for making it impressively far through oxford with my ego intact... anyway i didn’t realise quite how accustomed i had become to this weary admission of my mediocrity (believing once again in this whole construction of the superior white male intelligence, men who scribble vaguely knowledgeably in moleskines and say that a dictionary entry’s definition of rhetoric made them “uncomfortable”) and quite how joyless this whole “well fuck it i’m here for free let’s just scrape through” thing had become - nor did i realise quite how pathetically dependent i am on praise. 

that is to say i had one wild unspooling revelation of a 30 minute supervision and ugh how fucking blissful just to sit there on a tutor’s sagging sofa surrounded by messy stacks of paper and books, and rhapsodise about elegies and the civil war and have her recite shakespeare and hardy to me and actually.... agree with things i said, and ask at the end whether i was thinking of doing a phd, and laugh at my dumb joke about foucault - my god, i have been so fucking starved of... attention. i used to be good at this. holy fuck. i used to be good at this, i used to stay for hours in phil’s office and ramble about ovid and calvin and joyce (”well, early beckett’s basically joyce”, i think i earnestly believed i sounded cultured...) and believe i had something worth saying or at least some germ of generative potential. i miss that. whether i was actually smart or whether my oxford tutors had a vested interest in encouraging my delusions of grandeur i don’t know, but either way.

i think still buried under the slowly accumulating layers of tired pragmatism is the vague dream that this...can all work, that despite the dumpster fire of the higher education sector and humanities funding i can still somehow make it work, that there still is a version of reality in which it’s possible for me to stay ensconced in the academy and live meaningfully with some measure of success. i really thought for a while that that was what i’d do, and then my self esteem imploded catastrophically and when i became aware of the actual miserable precarious grind of academic life that certainly ushered it along. and i’ve really just about reached the endpoint of that progressive revelation, nor will i change my mind, but for just 15 minutes walking home practically skipping through the rain in manic bliss i really missed that dream that i had.

what are you passionate about?

This is one of the first images that I’ve shared trying to go for a more film look. I think the mood of this cave better suits that old school, grainy look, as opposed to the HD pictures below. 

I was lucky I got to go to Spain this past spring break. I almost didn’t go for various reasons, but that’s neither here nor there. I’m just grateful I got to experience such a culturally rich and wonderful country like Spain. One of the highlights of the trip was experiencing two different kinds of flamenco dances. The first one was very traditional and very pure⸺just two guys, one on guitar and one singing while a man and woman were dancing. The second one (pictured here) was a lot more personal and casual and more like the kind normal Spaniards see⸺a very lively, intimate setting where people are dancing right in front of you and you join in. Both were highly unique and enthralling in different ways. But again, I won’t bore you with my half-baked analysis of Spanish culture. One thing that stood out to me amongst the two dances, though, was such passion for each other and the actual dance.

On the topic of dancing, I can hardly tell someone what it is. I have the rhythm and moves of a wacky-waving-inflatable-arm-flailing tube man, but I just sort of go for it anyway when the situation demands it. I wouldn’t call myself passionate in that respect. I barely could play piano, I can just about doodle basic cartoons. But in this weird transitionary period of my life, it’s a question I’ve been grappling with for some time. Am I as passionate as the couple in this photo here about anything?? I thought the answer was always clear in my mind. I thought I knew what I wanted to be. And then, four years of college seemed to knock out that wind in me. My parents comment regularly nowadays about how I seem to be less happy, less positive and chipper how I seem to have lost my drive. In some respects, I don’t think they’re wrong. I think it’s hard to convince yourself to keep going when every academic sign has told me not to move forward on this path. Whether it’s stubbornness or stupidity, I convinced myself I want to be there. I did genuinely liked what I learned. I genuinely liked experiencing the work environment I want to be in.

It’s something I see some of my friends struggling with as well. I think some of them are self-assured and self-confident enough to know their path, the next steps and beyond. Personally, I’m not a planning-50-steps-ahead kind of guy. It’s probably why I suck at chess. But more to the point, I fear this world more and more is more becoming about reaching the endpoint than enjoying the journey. I talked about this a bit in my last post (for my millions of followers here) how I regret in some aspects not enjoying my time in college more and just getting stuck doing classwork. I think I’m a victim of the same endemic I see amongst my peers. Somehow along the way, life became more about fulfilling a checkbox on a list than doing what we really enjoyed. 

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I understand totally that everyone is in a different circumstance. Family, social and societal obligations and situations may supersede interest. Some people just aren’t in the position to follow their passion. I just saw a Bollywood movie about this Indian math prodigy who couldn’t pursue his dream of higher education because his family didn’t have the money to send him to college. I get that that option isn’t there for everyone. I think that is a different problem altogether, though not unrelated. But even then, individuals across the socioeconomic spectrum are subject to the same scrutiny. Notwithstanding some kind of affirmative action or special placement, everyone is seemingly in a race to fill checkboxes to get to the next checkpoint. The story of prodigies and sudden successes are aberrations to the norm. I also could be overgeneralizing or projecting my situation on others, but I see less and less of the passion that drove mine in the first place.

Passion isn’t something one comes born with. It’s something that’s found. My passion for Marvel movies or Star Wars or Nintendo or some other stupid thing I like is something I’ve found, some even fairly recently. I try to tell myself that passion changes, it sparks and burns and diminishes, but much like energy, its never really gone, just moves to somewhere else. I need to get more comfortable with that sort of shift, whatever it may be. I need to accept that a passion for something else isn’t something I will immediately have, it’s something that needs to develop. And maybe I’ll find some misplaced passion for dancing, however crap my moves may be.  So it goes.

Devil’s Advocate - Are Idle Games A Waste Of Time?

The Question - Idle games are here to stay. I covered them once before, with a brief look at what I thought of them, but it was a little one-sided. I’m back on the idle game train again so it’s time to evaluate their worth as games. Do they deserve to clog up Steam and Kongregate or are you just wasting your time? The Answers Yes! - There is no real value in idle games; there’s no end or goal. You do not end up any wiser, stronger or better of a person. It’s simply eating time without any promise of a reward other than the ability to lose even more time. No!  - Idle games are great as stress relievers and there’s an inner joy to be had in watching numbers increase at faster and faster rates. Sometimes you don’t want something that taxes your brains or your reflexes. You just want some nice simple fun. Fight!

Yes - Being the kind of pretentious, ‘games are art’ ponce that I am, it would be wrong of me not to decry idle games. They’re exactly the opposite of what I usually look for in games. They don’t offer anything interesting, they lack depth of any kind and they’re churned out by the dozen. Christ, there are so many that Kongregate had to give them their own category. And yet they really don’t offer much. It’s baffling that they’re so popular. It’s a game where you can literally do nothing and still be good at it. Surely that’s the complete opposite of a video game?

No - Okay, but let’s take our heads out of our arses for a moment. Not every game needs to be some artistic masterpiece. After all, you can appreciate the genius of Shakespeare all you want but you’ll still read some pulp from time to time. You can’t spend every second of the day challenging your brain or it’ll explode. Idle games offer small drips of entertainment. Something for you to break out when you’re doing something else or if you just want a quick fix. Like Adventure Capitalist, for example. The one you’ve spent the last month or two playing, remember?

Y - Don’t bring real life into this!

N - Too late. It’s a good example because while it may not have the thematic or gameplay depth you’re talking about, it does have a lot for you to do. There are a ton of upgrades to unlock and you can even reset the game to gain investors, making it easier to push through to the higher upgrades. It encourages short play sessions to build up your empire, then when you hit a roadblock you can return tomorrow to pick up your investors and carry on. You’re trying to compare it to a normal packaged game, which is usually designed with a key endpoint or some set objectives. Idle games aren’t like that.

Y - Objectives aren’t the issue here. Survival games, like The Long Dark or early Minecraft, launched totally without objectives but they’re still fun because the systems allow you to make up your own rules and objectives. Idle games have such restricted gameplay that it’s difficult to put goals up for yourself beyond reaching a certain amount of money. And as there is no skill involved in reaching them, nor any real challenge, just more time being absorbed. So there’s no real satisfaction upon hitting them either. It just kind of… happens.

N - Again, you’re thinking of this like a regular game. There’s no set pattern of Challenge to Reward in idle games, it’s more about the bare satisfaction. Everyone loves seeing their stats increase in RPGs, right? Maybe there’s a basic hunger in human beings to see their growth advertised in numbers. Something to prove that we’ve spent our time wisely. Idle games just cut out that part and paste it right in front of our eyes. We can show the world that we’ve made the best gosh darned cookies in Cookie Clicker. It doesn’t matter that we didn’t fight to get there, we invested a chunk of our lives in it. And any investment like that is going to be a reward in of itself.

Y - I’m not sure I really agree with that. It feels more like phantom enjoyment rather than anything worthwhile. After all, while I do agree that seeing your numbers in RPGs increase is a good feeling, it’s the struggle that makes it so satisfying. The joy is being able to lord it over enemies that destroyed you and know that it was all your work. Idle games can’t do that because victory just comes from waiting. It’s a cycle of repetition that doesn’t really need the player's input beyond maybe a few clicks here and there if you’re lucky. Without meaningful player interaction, nothing can really come from it. It doesn’t matter how limited the interaction, look at One Finger Death Punch, but some sort of conscious interaction is necessary to make it a proper game.

N - So go on, come out and say it. You don’t think Idle games are proper games?

Y - No, I think they’re excel spreadsheets that fill themselves. Literally, in the case of Progress Quest.

N - Disagree. Idle games are just video games reduced to their absolute core. Cut through the flim flam of any game and it’s just a bunch of numbers. They’re like stress balls. Uncomplicated ways to better your life.

Y - Cut through the flim flam of any book and it’s just a bunch of words. Flim flam is important.

N - I need to stop saying ‘flim flam’, it’s losing all meaning.

Y - Agreed, let’s sum up. The Sum Up!

Y - Idle games are shallow, offering so little in the way of gameplay that they can barely be called games at all. They’re basic time sinks that encourage repetition without the promise of a reward. Without solid objectives, or anything really to do, there can’t be any satisfaction. Avoid ‘em.

N - Idle games are great when you want something non-complicated to kill ten minutes or so. They are games that can be returned to at any time, unlike a lot of others. They don’t require investment or skill; it’s just raw game. Their reward is a basic pleasure at watching numbers increase. They’re definitely games. Play ‘em.

There were times when it seemed like Mac Miller would never stop rapping. At his peak, he was an indefatigable creative force who wrote and recorded hundreds of verses stuffed with cocksure bravado, unending internal rhyme schemes and sly double entendres. These verses were volleyed off onto grandiose Billboard-topping studio albums, knotty mixtapes scavenged by backpack rap nerds, or the projects of his countless collaborators at a breathtaking rate.

Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick in 1992, rapped with a restless determination: to outrun his initial reputation as a white frat rapper; to distract from his anxieties and addictions; to amuse himself and his friends; and to gain the respect of his idols, which he did: as Jay-Z admitted on Twitter, “Black people really magic. Mac Miller nice too though.”

But there’s not much rapping at all on Circles, his sixth (and presumably last) studio album released posthumously on Friday. Miller was well into the recording process of Circles when he died in September 2018 of an accidental overdose. Because he envisioned Circles as a companion to his previous album Swimming, released in August 2018, his family was left with an agonizing decision about whether to finish and release it: “This is a complicated process that has no right answer. No clear path,” they wrote in a statement on his Instagram page when they announced the forthcoming album. “We simply know that it was important to Malcolm for the world to hear it.” The album was ultimately completed by the veteran producer Jon Brion, who worked with Miller extensively before his death.

On Swimming and his previous album The Divine Feminine, Miller was already shifting his focus from dogged lyricism to shrewd songcraft, building out deep funk grooves and lush orchestral arrangements to reach a new creative pinnacle. Circles is the endpoint of this verbal retreat: Miller pared down his syllables to mostly embrace a soulful brand of folk rock, relying on his unadorned, plaintive singing like never before.

But Circles is also an anguished portrait of a man close to burnout, striving to escape the ruthless pace with which he previously carried himself. “Maybe I’ll lay down for a little / Instead of always trying to figure everything out,” he sang on the single “Good News,” released last week. Circles is not the culmination of an epic life’s work, but a heartbreaking plea for peace from a man who had spent a relentless decade in the spotlight.

While many of Miller’s final public performances—like on NPR’s Tiny Desk or The Late Show With Stephen Colbert—were driven by uptempo funk, Circles most resembles the back half of Swimming, which sinks into piano balladry and quiet expressions of regret. Miller was long a John Lennon superfan, and certain songs on Circles recall the rawest piano-heavy arrangements of Lennon’s work with the Plastic Ono Band—as well as the unvarnished arrangements and melodies of a different Brion collaborator, Rufus Wainwright. Miller also delivers a committed cover of the rock band Love’s “Everybody’s Gotta Live,” lending the existential 1972 anthem a bounce without sacrificing any of its mournfulness.

It may seem initially strange for one of the world’s most talented rappers to take his cues from rock, but Miller’s inclinations fit into a larger trend over the last few years in the hip-hop world of imbuing rap cadences with melody. The current Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” is sung all the way through; many other artists, from Tyler the Creator to Dominic Fike to Brockhampton to Rex Orange County, have found the sweet spot between indie rock, hip-hop and soul. Streaming audiences have followed these artists to the spaces between musical walls: the genreless playlists Pollen and Lorem are two of the most popular discovery hubs on Spotify.

Miller used to hide his wavering voice under a phalanx of filters, pitching effects and doubled vocal tracks to the point that he was sometimes unrecognizable. But on Circles, he puts his unadorned singing voice front and center, lending the album a casual and startling intimacy. On “Hand Me Downs,” one of the album’s strongest songs, he effortlessly slides up to high notes with a husky sweetness before dropping back down to tiptoe over syllables with his trademark playful drawl.

Miller is no Aretha Franklin. But he employs his vocal chops with confidence and charm, and his comparative lack of vocal strength actually lends poignancy to an album haunted by anxiety and drift. He was admittedly taking opioids in the months leading up to his death, and Circles certainly feels like an album made on downers: his lyrics lack clarity or specific targets, and at times he seems to be singing at a remove from himself. “Ever since I can remember I been keeping it together / But I’m feeling strange,” he murmurs on “Hand Me Downs.” On “Hands,” he reprimands himself, as if to shake himself from a stupor: ”Why don’t you wake up from your bad dreams / When’s the last time you took a little time for yourself?”

Regret is a huge theme on Circles, with Miller constantly alluding to past mistakes; his lyrics and turn to aesthetic sparseness can be read as an attempt to distance himself from a previous frenzied or craven mentality. On the defiant and brash 2012 single “Loud,” Miller had announced “People lie, numbers don’t,” and cited sold-out shows and Billboard numbers. In direct contrast, Miller sleepily croons on “Surf,” “People, they lie / But hey, so do I” before delivering a new Zen-like mantra: “There’s water in the flowers / Let’s grow.”

If Miller’s new subdued attitude was healthier for him, it also put something of a wet blanket over his creativity. Miller often talked about wanting to have good days and bad days—to embrace the full and agonizing spectrum of human emotion. But Circles exists somewhere in the hazy middle, capturing neither the harrowing lows of Swimming nor the euphoric braggadocio of GO:OD AM.

And aspects of the album leave behind the nagging suspicion that Miller, if he had lived, might have completed it differently: he might have re-written generic placeholder lyrics (“I don’t know where I been lately but I’ve been alright”) and brought more life to instrumental parts that often sound like demos. Circles is perhaps too small in scale to be Miller’s final masterpiece; it doesn’t exhibit the mammoth musical growth that listeners had come to expect from him from album to album.

But it’s still compelling in its own drowsy way. Miller’s ability to locate and lock into unique, catchy flows and melodies is still extremely evident—particularly on the invigorating “Hands.” Brion deserves some credit for constructing blue-grey textures to match Miller’s somber mood. And his growth here is of a different type—toward a patient spirituality, toward being okay with stasis for the purpose of self-care. “Some people say they want to live forever,” he muses on “Complicated,” before adding, “That’s way too long, I’ll just get through the day.”

Spyro Reignited Countdown: Attack of the Rhynocs

Back on the GBA, we get the first Spyro game with a semi-continuous world: Attack of the Rhynocs.

And we’re back to games that give me nostalgia. It’s the first Spyro game I beat all by myself, and ranks up there with the Insomniac trilogy for Spyro games I’ve beaten the most times.

Gameplay

Digital Eclipse had a formula that worked, and kept with it. Camera no longer gives me motion sickness like it did in Season of Flame, and everything else is as solid as ever.

It’s not quite as varied as Season of Flame, though, as minigame portals are no longer a thing and very few minigames exist. But what’s there works very well.

Additional Playable Characters

As is tradition with Digital Eclipse games, we get two additional game modes. This time, it comes as Sgt. Byrd and Agent 9 missions.

Sgt. Byrd is actually the one I like less. It’s in 2D, but the main issue is how hard you have to mash the A button to fly, because you need to press it to flap Byrd’s wings, every time he flaps his wings. And when you’re rescuing the penguins, you don’t get as much air when you flap, making you flap more often the more penguins you rescue at once.

Honestly though, aside from thumb fatigue, I really enjoy these levels. You go around the map, shooting enemies and bringing trapped penguins back to base. And the music is by far the catchiest song in the game, and I might even daresay the entire franchise.

Agent 9... I don’t hate. This time it’s stealth missions, and honestly that’s how I prefer to play games with a ranged attack: shooting opponents before they see you. It’s still 2D and plays similarly to his parts in Season of Flame, but it’s all about not being seen rather than shooting first. You get a vacuum gun that replaces the enemies with decoys, and you have a grappling hook to swing over gaps above enemy heads. There’s various pieces of cover to hide under from cameras. While I still prefer Spyro’s gameplay, this is the only instance of Agent 9 in the series where I enjoy his levels.

Collectables

Are really all over the place in this game.

So we have Gems as always. They’re collected in the same way as always, but aren’t needed for progress if I recall correctly. Still, if you 100% the game, you will end up having 0 Gems. Moneybags sells you cosmetics and his area’s Heart, charging you so much overall that you will have nothing at the end. And you have to literally rob him to get that much.

The main collectable this time is Hearts. But unlike previous games, these collectables aren’t everywhere, nor like Talismans are they easy to get. No, aside from some freebies from bosses and the one Moneybags sells you, Hearts come from NPCs after you collect all of their lost items. These lost items are scattered around each world, some in easy-to-reach areas, others in much more difficult areas. Most of these collections have at least one piece hidden in a chest, which you need two key pieces to open, both rewarded for completing both a Sgt. Byrd and an Agent 9 Mission.

You are almost guaranteed to end the game with just the freebies. There is so much backtracking in this game. Because you’ll go through the levels in order, right? You’ll get the keys as you come to them. You won’t be completing any keys until halfway through the game, and there’s some chests in early areas that require keys that have pieces in literally the last area of the game. So you’ll make a chest sweep after you get all of the keys. And then, finally, you’ll go through and give the items to each NPC in exchange of the Heart.

Powerups

There are no temporary powerups in this game.

Breath Abilities

And here we solidify the permanence of breath abilities.

You start the game with Fire and a weak Wind ability. Fire is as it always has been, and Wind allows you to flap your wings to push some wind forward. Useless in combat, but essential for pushing yourself across water on various types of boats.

As you go on, you gain Ice Breath (which acts as it has in previous games), and upgrade your three abilities: as you hold down the breath button, you charge it up. Once it’s fully charged, you can release it for a different effect.

Fire breath upgrades to shoot a fireball far forward. You can use it to hit faraway targets and enemies.

Ice Breath upgrades to freeze certain patches of water so you can walk on them. Why does some water work and not others? There’s really no reason.

Wind upgrades to create a tornado with a lightning storm cloud on top. It’s used in specific boss battles, but otherwise is too unwieldy to use in normal combat.

Digital Eclipse did well to keep each breath ability unique and for all of them to have their uses. I’d say this is the best use of Breath Abilities in the Classic series.

Bosses

They’re unique and okay. Each is fought a different way, and they often involve using the environment and/or your upgraded breath abilities to your advantage. These bosses are definitely far superior to the ones in previous games.

Levels

My brain refuses to accept that this game has levels in the same way other Spyro games do, but whatever I think, it does. It’s just that there isn’t a clear exit for any level other than its entrance, and without something like Talismans, there’s not a clear endpoint to any particular level. Yeah, you get a new power every one, but you get that power pretty early in a lot of them. If you wanted to speedrun, it’d be easy to basically enter, get the ability, exit, and you’d have hardly touched what there is to do in the level.

But, the theming is well-done, and a lot of the levels are unique and have interesting mechanics. I can’t fault them for doing what they try to do. It just feels weird.

Story

The Professor shows Spyro his new invention, a telescope that peeks into Ripto’s world. He also shows Spyro another new invention: a robotic butler named Butler.

Butler malfunctions, and when Spyro shorts him out to deactivate him, the portal to Ripto’s world opens. Ripto comes in, bringing his Rhynocs (since they’re definitely his at this point), and they go about wreaking havoc. Now, Spyro needs to go throughout the realms and get Hearts, a power supply that will seal the portal again, as well as, of course, stopping Ripto.

Overall this plot brings up a lot of questions (why is Ripto living in the Rhynoc world? Why is he even still alive? What purpose is there to spying on him? And that’s not even getting into the returning NPCs) and contributes to the weird feeling this game has.

For the first time, it doesn’t feel Spyro-y. And I don’t know how much of it’s the plot and how much of it’s the level design.

Unique in the Series?

Yeah. There’s certain abilities Spyro gets that are never seen again (Wind powers, glowing in dark areas, the ability to teleport but only to a specific area, limitless access to powered-up attacks).

Butler only appears in this game, and all of his related mechanics.

It’s the only Spyro game with a dedicated tutorial level.

It’s the only game Moneybags squeezes every last Gem out of you and doesn’t give any back.

It’s the only Spyro game with a stealth section.

It’s the only Spyro game that scatters a bunch of unrelated items everywhere, requiring a lot of backtracking to gain the main collectables.

It characterizes everyone in a way unique to the series, like Bianca being a magician, Zoe being a librarian, and Ripto being a raging toddler.

It’s just so different that it hardly feels like the same series, even compared to its Season predecessors.

Is this a bad thing? Not at all. Digital Eclipse finally stopped trying to recreate the Insomniac games and put their own spin on the franchise. It just didn’t stick.

Conclusion

I still love this game. It’s still one of my favorites, and is definitely my favorite GBA Spyro game.

But you can’t go into it expecting more of what previous Spyro games were like. And this is going to be the new trend of the series.

Perhaps it was Enter the Dragonflies’ failure that caused Universal to allow studios to make these changes. Perhaps it was that it no longer was Universal but Vivendi in charge. Whatever the case, from this point forward, Spyro was never the same again.

And it all started with a humble GBA game experimenting with characterization and gameplay. A Hero’s Tail didn’t come from nowhere.

But Why, Though?

Dear Television,

This show long ago backed itself into a corner in terms of how it could end, and, last night, smashed its face in the corner, smiling. Someone had selected Jon kills Daenerys, the dragon melts the Iron Throne, and Bran is the new king on their bingo card: congratulations, you won the prize!

If you strain, there’s an underlying logic to it: even enlightened despots are bad, we’ve decided, and democracy is hilarious, obviously, but since all the real power-brokers are dead, the remaining half-assed aristocracy has decided to shift power a rung down the ladder (with a place-holder semi-king), which gets something like the status quo ante back, though it’s unclear why this outcome would be better or worse than a variety of alternatives. It requires a very generous reading even to deduce that that is what’s happening. But it could have gone a half-dozen ways just as easily, and nothing about how it actually went last night felt more surprising, inevitable, or satisfying than the multitude of scenarios that people had dreamed up. Ideally, a good climax would have taken you by surprise in the moment, but as it sank in, you would have realized how it had been earned by what came before; and after the show was over, you’d have been satisfied by what it all added up to and meant.

The show has pulled that off before: Ned Stark’s death and the Red Wedding (and Cersei’s big victory) are obvious examples of successful climactic moments. The show’s ruthlessness was shocking, but made sense as you thought it through. Those surprises reinforced an essentially tragic tone and message: the Game of Thrones had winners and die-ers, and, since valar morghulis (all must die), even winning just buys you time until you die and someone else can win. Power is treachery, and treacherous; the Game of Thrones is The Wheel, endlessly turning (or the astrolabe from the title sequence) with its heartbeat the accompanying theme music, the show’s true MVP, a song that never ends and never changes.

I hoped the show had another shock like that in its back pocket. The more fool I; Jon killing Daenerys was, to put it bluntly, not it. There was no element of surprise since other major characters were begging him to do it, and neither actor did anything interesting in the scene except look as surprised by what was happening as we were supposed to be. It also wasn’t earned, and didn’t feel like it meant anything: if Daenerys’ tragic flaw was the self-justifying cycle of “killing the bad guys,” why was killing her the solution to her turning bad? Why didn’t Jon Snow seize the throne afterwards (wasn’t everyone’s argument that he would be the best King?) How did he get imprisoned? Did he confess? Grey Worm’s actions make no sense; he had literally been executing soldier nobodies who had surrendered, just because, but the guy who killed his queen he just tosses in jail? And then accepts the jurisdiction of A Random Collection of I Guess These Are The High Lords and Ladies of Westeros Now when they free him? Offscreen? Why does Jon Snow go to the Actually There Isn’t A Night’s Watch Anymore So I Guess We’ll Just Roam North Epically? I mean, Tyrion can just walk out of prison and become the Hand of a king who he also just happened to appoint? Why did Grey Worm accept any of it? Why didn’t all the lords and ladies follow Sansa’s example and declare independence? Why is Bronn in charge of four castles or whatever, just because TYRION promised it to him?

WHY DID ANY OF IT, in short. What are the peasants up to? Which gods ordained all of this?

(The outcome was so beyond baffling that I found myself fixating on little things. When the Iron Throne was melted by dragon-fire, it should have been grand and dramatic and terrible, and instead it was just funny; did the dragon burn the chair-made-of-swords because he saw his mother murdered by a sword and blamed the chair? Can we really blame him for jumping to that conclusion, given what nonsense the rest of the plotting was?)

For me, the best example of the sort of thing that I’d foolishly hoped the show might do, last night, was the season six revelation of Hodor’s name. Not only shocking, earned, and tragic, but narratively productive, opening up a new dimension in the show’s temporal fabric. Through the head-fuck of Bran accidentally changing the past (or, rather, what the past had already always been), the show suggested a lot of new narrative possibilities, most interestingly, that Bran was himself both the Night King and “Bran the Builder,” my personal favorite missed opportunity: while mortals fought their petty wars, the cosmic backdrop could have turned out to be one guy’s transhistorical war with himself, building walls to stop himself from killing himself, and ruining so many lives by accident along the way.

Instead, it was all downhill once the show killed off the Night King. Without him, Bran’s plot didn’t make much sense and it seemed clear that the showrunners neither knew what to do with him — since he was functionally omniscient and no one ever asked him any questions — nor would there be much for him to do. So, of course, they made him King, and made his kingship the endpoint of whatever crazy hand has been guiding the plot. Was it the Lord of Light? The old gods? The new? The many-faced God? The show’s entire religious structure seems to have had a hand in saving him to become King, but what Tyrion and the rest of them seem to value about him is that he’s an ego-less cipher. Going a step beyond Douglas Adams, the only person who can be trusted with power is someone who not only doesn’t want it, but who isn’t even a person. And yet, who made Bran king? As ludicrous as Tyrion’s speech is — and as ridiculous as it is that Grey Worm and the lords and ladies accept it — an awful lot of deus ex machina had to happen to make this outcome possible. “Why do you think I came all this way?” is a goddamned good question, Bran, and we’d like some goddamned answers.

We got no answers. If we aren’t satisfied — and I’m not — one reason is that the show wanted to stick the landing and there just wasn’t a landing to stick. It shouldn’t have tried. They wanted to have it both ways, an ending that would be “bittersweet,” the showrunners said, probably imagining something like putting sugar in chocolate or coffee. Instead, it was like pouring lemonade into beer; yes, there was some bitterness, and yes there was some sweet, but there was also just so much that it ultimately tastes horrible.

At its best, this show could have it both ways on a lot of things because there was always more to the story. The weird mix of the Hollywood sensibilities of the showrunners — who loved them some Good Princes and Evil Zombie Hordes — and the (somewhat) more interesting genre-bending agenda of the anti-Tolkienesque author could work because the resolution of that weird emulsion was deferred, still working itself out. There was so much yet to be revealed and explained, and the game kept going on, that the presumed possibility of an ending that would work was in the back of your mind the whole time. And so the show got to live firmly within the genre’s expectations — princes, prophecies, apocalyptic doom, and heroism — while also subverting them with a grounded cynicism about politics. All the contradictions became riddles to be explained, a map filled with empty spaces; red herrings could be not-yet-revealeds and plot holes were wait-and-sees. Any character abuse could seem to be in service of some larger narrative that wasn’t yet completed, and thus, couldn’t yet be judged a failure. As long as the prince that was promised never came, we could keep waiting; the moment he did, and the show reached its conclusion, we could suddenly look at what it had done and judge it, and for the first time, the emptiness of the show was unavoidable. Like a shark, the moment it stopped moving forward, it started to die.

Obviously, the show and the showrunners don’t understand this. They went down a list, giving endings to each story which seemed to them to be plausible and appropriate, which they superficially all are. But the reason they don’t add up to anything larger is that there is nothing larger in the show: democracy is laughable because no one else exists in this show except characters with names. Most of them are now dead, but the few who remain — including long-lost second-stringers like Robin Arryn and Uncle Edmure — showed up at the end to collectively Fortinbras our way back to whatever passes for normalcy in this world. The totalitarian threat is dead — and the democratic one is inconceivable — so we’re back to the same old small council chairs.

And this, in a way, is the real problem: even after the ending, the world has to go on, and when it does, it undoes the finality of everything that happened in the finale. The story continues (even as it ends) because at some point in the future, it won’t anymore: Bran will die without children, and a new political order will be born. But this new way to defer the show’s resolution — picking a non-King for the Iron Throne that doesn’t exist anymore, the solution to hereditary kingship because he’ll be the last of his name — only works to the extent that we’re not going to see it happen. And so we don’t: the show ends, so that it can continue.

The serverless approach to testing is different and may actually be easier

Discovering the inherent advantages for testing smaller bits of uncoupled logic requires a different approach — and tools

I’ve been thinking a lot about testing recently. At work we have recently increased the number of our lambda functions by a significant amount due to additions of client applications and addition of features. This isn’t a massive deal to develop new features, but there has been something that has been beginning to bug me (if you’ll excuse the pun).

Testing is a “good thing”

I’m all for creating tests. Whether it’s true “Test Driven Development” — or whatever the testing methodology du jour is now — is immaterial to me. Sometimes in a startup, you just have to deploy something fast, and write a test later (I know, I know — but I’m just giving people who’ve never worked in a startup the real world scenarios). And sometimes, the tests never get written because you think that your use case is already caught (it isn’t).

Often tests get written because of bugs occurring in the production environment. This will always occur unless you have endless money and time — which you won’t in a startup.

Tests are vitally important.

But if you’re using the prevailing testing wisdom — serverless is hard.

Testing interactions with “service-full” architecture

Serverless architecture uses a lot of services — hence why some prefer to call the architecture “service-full” instead of serverless. Those services are essentially elements of an application that are independent of your testing regime.

An external element.

A good external service will be tested for you. And that’s really important. Because you shouldn’t have to test the service itself. You only really need to test the effect of your interaction with it.

Here’s an example …

Let’s say you have a Function as a Service (e.g. Lambda function) and you utilise a database service (e.g. DynamoDB). You’ll want to test the interaction with the database service from the function to ensure your data is saved/read correctly, and that your function can deal with the responses from the service.

Now, the above scenario is relatively easy because you can utilise DynamoDB from your local machine, and run unit tests to check the values stored in the database. But have you spotted something with this scenario? It’s not the live service — it’s a copy of it. But the API is the same. So, as long as the API doesn’t change we’re ok, right?

To be honest, I’ve reached a point where I’m realising that if we use an AWS service, the likelihood is that AWS have done a much better job of testing it than I have. So we mock the majority of our interactions with AWS (and other) services in unit tests. This makes it relatively simple to develop a function of logic and unit test it — with mocks for services required.

This is similar to when using a framework such as Rails. You shouldn’t be testing that the ORM works. That’s the ORM maintainers job, not yours. So it stands to reason that if a service provides an interface and documentation about how the interface works, then it should be fine — right?

Hopefully…

What about other parts of testing — beyond unit tests?

Here’s where there is a problem with serverless… sort of. Unit tests are easy with a FaaS function because the logic is often tiny. There is a tendency to an over reliance on mocks in my view but it works.

All other forms of testing are hard. In fact, I’d say we’ve possibly moved into needing a different paradigm to discuss this.

Through years of building monolithic applications, we’ve got absolutely obsessed that certain types of testing are absolutely vital — and if we don’t have them we’re “wrong”.

So let’s just step back a bit.

We’ve actually been having the discussion about distributed systems and testing for a while. The microservice patterns have shown us that it’s not always appropriate and often expensive to try to test everything in the way we do a monolith.

The key for integration testing with a microservice pattern is that you test the microservice and it’s integration with external components. Which is interesting, because you’re still imagining some sort of separation here.

In Lambda, in this context, every single Lambda needs to be treated as a microservice then for testing. Which means that your function’s unit tests (with mocks) need to be expanded to integration tests by removing the mocks, and using the actual service or stubbing the service in some way.

Unfortunately not every external service is easily testable in this way. And not every service provides a test interface for you to work with — nor do some services makes it easy to stub themselves. I would suggest that if a service can’t provide you with a relatively easy way to test the interface in reality, then you should consider using another one.

This is especially true when a transaction is financial. You don’t want a test to actually cost you any real money at this point!

Going beyond unit and single function integration tests

For me, the easiest way to test a serverless system as a whole is to generate a separate system in a non-linked AWS account (or other cloud provider). Then make every external service essentially link to a “test” service, or as best we can limit our exposure to cost.

This is how I’ve approached it — and it relies on Infrastructure as Code to make it happen. Hence, the use of something like Terraform or CloudFormation.

But interestingly, when you go beyond a single function like this in a microservice approach, you get onto things like component testing and then system testing. Essentially testing is about increasing the test boundary each time. Start with a small test boundary and work out.

Unit testing, then integration, and so on …

But interestingly, our unit tests are doing the job of testing the boundary of each function reasonably well, plus doing the unit test, and also testing the function’s relation to external services reasonably well. So the next step is to test a combination of the services together.

But since we’re using external services for the majority of our interactions, and not invoking functions from within functions very often, then the test boundaries are actually relatively uncoupled.

Hmm… so basically, the more uncoupled a function’s logic is from other function’s logic, the closer the test boundary is as we move outwards in tests.

So after good unit and integration tests on a Function by Function basis, what comes next? Is it simply end to end testing next? This becomes really interesting, since that means testing the entire “distributed system” in a staging style environment with reasonable data.

Wait! Did we just … ?

Basically, what it seems to happen with a Function as a Service approach is that the suite of tests seem a lot simpler than you would normally do with a monolithic or even a microservice approach.

The test boundaries for unit testing a FaaS Function appears to be very close to an integration test versus a component test within a microservice approach.

Quick Caveat: if you do lots of function to function invocations, then you are coupling those functions and then test boundaries will change. Functions invoking functions make a separate test boundary to worry about.

Which comes back to something else very interesting. If you build functions, and develop an event driven approach utilising third party services (e.g. SNS, DynamoDB Triggers, Kinesis, SQS in the AWS world) as the event connecting “glue” — then you may be able to essentially limit yourself to testing the functions separately and then the system.

Hmm … so testing is simpler?

Not exactly, but close.

I would suggest the system testing is harder. If you’re purely using an API Gateway with Lambdas behind it, then you can use third party tools to test the HTTP endpoints and build a test suite that way. It’s relatively understood.

But if you’re doing a lot of internal event triggering, such as DynamoDB triggers setting of a chain of events and multiple lambdas, then you have to do something different. This form of testing is harder, but since everything is a service — including the Lambda — it should be relatively simple to do.

The person that builds the tool for this kind of system testing with serverless will do very well. At present, the CI/CD tools we have and testing tools around it are not (quite) good enough.

Testing and Serverless is different

When I started thinking about this article, I was expecting to figure out a lot of things around how to fit better testing regimes into our workflow.

As this article has come together, what’s happened is an identification of why serverless approaches are different to monolithic and microservice approaches. As a result, I’ve realised the inherent advantages for testing of smaller bits of uncoupled logic.

You can’t just drag your old “Testing for Monoliths Toolbox” into the serverless world and expect it to work any more.

Testing in serverless is different.

Testing in serverless may actually be easier.

In fact, testing in Serverless may actually be easier to maintain as well.

But we’re currently lacking the testing tools to really drive home the value. — looking forward to when they arrive.

Some final thoughts

I’m often a reluctant test writer. I like to hack and find things out as I go before building things to “work”. I’ve never been one of the kinds of people to force testing in any scenario so I may be missing the point in some of this. There are definitely people more qualified to talk about testing than me, but these are simply thoughts on testing.

There were times when it seemed like Mac Miller would never stop rapping. At his peak, he was an indefatigable creative force who wrote and recorded hundreds of verses stuffed with cocksure bravado, unending internal rhyme schemes and sly double entendres. These verses were volleyed off onto grandiose Billboard-topping studio albums, knotty mixtapes scavenged by backpack rap nerds, or the projects of his countless collaborators at a breathtaking rate.

Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick in 1992, rapped with a restless determination: to outrun his initial reputation as a white frat rapper; to distract from his anxieties and addictions; to amuse himself and his friends; and to gain the respect of his idols, which he did: as Jay-Z admitted on Twitter, “Black people really magic. Mac Miller nice too though.”

But there’s not much rapping at all on Circles, his sixth (and presumably last) studio album released posthumously on Friday. Miller was well into the recording process of Circles when he died in September 2018 of an accidental overdose. Because he envisioned Circles as a companion to his previous album Swimming, released in August 2018, his family was left with an agonizing decision about whether to finish and release it: “This is a complicated process that has no right answer. No clear path,” they wrote in a statement on his Instagram page when they announced the forthcoming album. “We simply know that it was important to Malcolm for the world to hear it.” The album was ultimately completed by the veteran producer Jon Brion, who worked with Miller extensively before his death.

On Swimming and his previous album The Divine Feminine, Miller was already shifting his focus from dogged lyricism to shrewd songcraft, building out deep funk grooves and lush orchestral arrangements to reach a new creative pinnacle. Circles is the endpoint of this verbal retreat: Miller pared down his syllables to mostly embrace a soulful brand of folk rock, relying on his unadorned, plaintive singing like never before.

But Circles is also an anguished portrait of a man close to burnout, striving to escape the ruthless pace with which he previously carried himself. “Maybe I’ll lay down for a little / Instead of always trying to figure everything out,” he sang on the single “Good News,” released last week. Circles is not the culmination of an epic life’s work, but a heartbreaking plea for peace from a man who had spent a relentless decade in the spotlight.

While many of Miller’s final public performances—like on NPR’s Tiny Desk or The Late Show With Stephen Colbert—were driven by uptempo funk, Circles most resembles the back half of Swimming, which sinks into piano balladry and quiet expressions of regret. Miller was long a John Lennon superfan, and certain songs on Circles recall the rawest piano-heavy arrangements of Lennon’s work with the Plastic Ono Band—as well as the unvarnished arrangements and melodies of a different Brion collaborator, Rufus Wainwright. Miller also delivers a committed cover of the rock band Love’s “Everybody’s Gotta Live,” lending the existential 1972 anthem a bounce without sacrificing any of its mournfulness.

It may seem initially strange for one of the world’s most talented rappers to take his cues from rock, but Miller’s inclinations fit into a larger trend over the last few years in the hip-hop world of imbuing rap cadences with melody. The current Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” is sung all the way through; many other artists, from Tyler the Creator to Dominic Fike to Brockhampton to Rex Orange County, have found the sweet spot between indie rock, hip-hop and soul. Streaming audiences have followed these artists to the spaces between musical walls: the genreless playlists Pollen and Lorem are two of the most popular discovery hubs on Spotify.

Miller used to hide his wavering voice under a phalanx of filters, pitching effects and doubled vocal tracks to the point that he was sometimes unrecognizable. But on Circles, he puts his unadorned singing voice front and center, lending the album a casual and startling intimacy. On “Hand Me Downs,” one of the album’s strongest songs, he effortlessly slides up to high notes with a husky sweetness before dropping back down to tiptoe over syllables with his trademark playful drawl.

Miller is no Aretha Franklin. But he employs his vocal chops with confidence and charm, and his comparative lack of vocal strength actually lends poignancy to an album haunted by anxiety and drift. He was admittedly taking opioids in the months leading up to his death, and Circles certainly feels like an album made on downers: his lyrics lack clarity or specific targets, and at times he seems to be singing at a remove from himself. “Ever since I can remember I been keeping it together / But I’m feeling strange,” he murmurs on “Hand Me Downs.” On “Hands,” he reprimands himself, as if to shake himself from a stupor: ”Why don’t you wake up from your bad dreams / When’s the last time you took a little time for yourself?”

Regret is a huge theme on Circles, with Miller constantly alluding to past mistakes; his lyrics and turn to aesthetic sparseness can be read as an attempt to distance himself from a previous frenzied or craven mentality. On the defiant and brash 2012 single “Loud,” Miller had announced “People lie, numbers don’t,” and cited sold-out shows and Billboard numbers. In direct contrast, Miller sleepily croons on “Surf,” “People, they lie / But hey, so do I” before delivering a new Zen-like mantra: “There’s water in the flowers / Let’s grow.”

If Miller’s new subdued attitude was healthier for him, it also put something of a wet blanket over his creativity. Miller often talked about wanting to have good days and bad days���to embrace the full and agonizing spectrum of human emotion. But Circles exists somewhere in the hazy middle, capturing neither the harrowing lows of Swimming nor the euphoric braggadocio of GO:OD AM.

And aspects of the album leave behind the nagging suspicion that Miller, if he had lived, might have completed it differently: he might have re-written generic placeholder lyrics (“I don’t know where I been lately but I’ve been alright”) and brought more life to instrumental parts that often sound like demos. Circles is perhaps too small in scale to be Miller’s final masterpiece; it doesn’t exhibit the mammoth musical growth that listeners had come to expect from him from album to album.

But it’s still compelling in its own drowsy way. Miller’s ability to locate and lock into unique, catchy flows and melodies is still extremely evident—particularly on the invigorating “Hands.” Brion deserves some credit for constructing blue-grey textures to match Miller’s somber mood. And his growth here is of a different type—toward a patient spirituality, toward being okay with stasis for the purpose of self-care. “Some people say they want to live forever,” he muses on “Complicated,” before adding, “That’s way too long, I’ll just get through the day.”
