does near every single post-canon DE fic out there need to be tagged ‘Sober Harry Du Bois’? i’m getting so tired of it.
do i expect every single piece of fan content to have to fully delve into the often-depressing always-complex topic of addiction? not really. sometimes you just want to write/read a silly fluffy romance one-shot, whatever. i get it. but i think my issue is specifically with the fact that for nearly every sillyfluffy au out there, there almost must be a ‘sober harry du bois’ tag. and it does feel very slapped-on more often than not.
i think to me it is an unconscious statement that nothing *good* can ever happen to harry du bois until he is completely and permanently sober. before solving the next big case, he has to be sober. before quitting the force, he has to be sober. before falling in love with kim, he has to be sober. before accomplishing anything, starting any sort of recovery, making any life improvement, he must first be sober.
sobriety as a goal, as a journey, and honestly as a concept in of itself is not as cut and dry as so many people think it is. and i think it would serve a lot of people well if they did some introspection on the implications of how nearly every single post-canon fic that isn’t dealing directly with harry’s addiction have him as completely sober instead.
if the plot of the fic isn’t going to touch directly on harry’s substance use (and again, i’m not demanding that every single fic should), why does that mean that sober!harry must be the default?
i think i am just tired of reading a casefic, a smutty one-shot, a fantasy au, whatever, where it almost seems that before getting on with the plot, the author feels obligated to first assure us that the harry we’re reading about is a Sober Harry. it’s established with a couple lines in the exposition, probably about his improved appearance, a tag up top, and then never brought up again; a checkmarked box. like the societal image of An Addict has completely prevented people from being able to imagine a person just, continuing to live life, while still struggling with addiction.
life happens, with all of its backslides and achievements, mundanity and changes, to people with drug addictions just as much as people who don’t. is a post-canon harry who isn’t sober not worth writing about?
i think so. i think the game we all played thinks so too. in fact i think that sentiment is woven into the game’s very core. i just wish i saw that reflected in our fan content more.

how do you feel about march eridan?
Ok disclaimer before I get into it, trolls wearing dresses = great and fantastic; in fact, given that the gender differences in troll culture are so much less significant, ALL the male trolls should own some femme-ass clothes, even if it's as simple as just having a skirt version of their pants, and it's a little lame that we didn't get that.
That said, March Eridan specifically kind of annoys me because it has 0 basis in canon (aside from some shoutouts in things like ministrife sprites) but has taken over Eridan discussions so wholly that it's become widely accepted as part of his character that he's really into femme stuff when the opposite is true, and he's got some pretty major characterization tied up in the fact that he does lean so masc, and what specific type of masc he tends to present as.
So first of all, Eridan dresses up to emulate Dualscar, and this is very obvious and straightforward; if you've read the big essay I have pinned to my blog, you know that this is all a part of his basic "I have to be a big bad sea dweller or Something Bad Will Happen" suite of issues.
Thus, we can ALSO assume that the choices he made that aren't made to emulate Dualscar are reflective of his ACTUAL taste in clothing. For example, blue pants instead of purple and black - I believe that this is because Eridan likes to dress up in the blood colors of his dates; he wears a lot of blue because he's hatedating Vriska (and never quite seems to get 100% over her), and we also see this in the rings on his fingers - half of which are fuchsia, for Feferi.
So that leaves us with the glasses, shoes, and scarf. And we know why he dresses like that! It's because he's a hipster. (The scarf has an added benefit of being associated with harry potter-style wizards).
CCG: PAST YOU, PRESENT YOU, FUTURE YOU
CCG: AND ABOVE ALL, UGLY SCARFNECKED DOUCHEBAG HIPSTER YOU
CCG: WAIT I FORGOT, ALL OF THE YOUS ARE THAT YOU
And very specifically, a masc hipster from the era - the glasses and the ugly-ass shoes are dead giveaways. The slicked-back hair is reminiscent of that fashion style, too. He is also a douchebag. This too is important. He draws from character archetypes of the time that were generally agreed upon to be the most punchable people in existence; his introduction calls him "KIND OF A TOOL" and he consistently acts according to that. Like, I mean, just LOOK at those shades. Those are not the shades of somebody you want to be trapped in a conversation with.
A fairly accurate Eridan fashion board would look something like this:
And, like, it kind of matters that he dresses like this specific breed of pretentious male douchebag; on a meta level, that's the impression he's supposed to give the audience, and on a diegetic level, he CHOOSES to look like this because he has these kinds of interests, but is relegating them to secondary accessories.
We never hear him talk about liking hipster shit; we have to hear it from Karkat and glean it from his design. This is because, as I've talked about before, he actively distances himself from things that make him happy, things that he'd enjoy. The constant push-pull between his ACTUAL interests, and the ones he thinks he has to have because he's supposed to be a big nasty sea dweller, is a huge part of his characterization - for example, the way he keeps claiming that magic and wizards are fake and shitty, but has no less than 6 wizard statues in his respiteblock alone, and cared about his crappy wands enough to bring them onto the meteor.
So that's one of my other issues with March Eridan and the general fanon that he'd be really into femme clothes (and, by extension, fashion) - he wouldn't be forthcoming about it, even if it was true. He has a deep sense of shame and insecurity surrounding what few interests he actually has, because they feel stupid, ridiculous, and frivolous, next to the intense anxiety he has about playing the role society gave him. He's got a very strong sense of duty that makes it very difficult for him to relax and actually enjoy something. Which, you know, probably feeds into his hipster-ness - a movement often defined more by what it doesn't approve of than what it does.
Canon Eridan, when he has a choice of what to wear, overwhelmingly chooses masculine clothing with hipster connotations. And this matters, it's part of his characterization, it says something about him, the same way that it's important that Karkat dresses very simply and baggily (we all know how many insecurities Karkat has about his body) or that Sollux's bifurcation is shown in his clothes. So please please please don't misunderstand my dislike of March Eridan as me saying I don't want him in dresses; I purely dislike it because it's usually SUCH a misread of his character.
And to prove it, here's my other gripe with March Eridan stuff: all the dresses shown in the not-canon "official" artworks don't even flatter his bodytype. Why do his custom mannequins in Pesterquest have CURVES when his Pesterquest sprite doesn't?????
Please, I'm begging you, there are guides for dressing this body type, and even historical fashions that deliberately try to emulate this body type, please if you're going to dress him femme and HC that he enjoys fashion, please put him in clothes that flatter him please
I think Eridan should own some femme clothes, because on Alternia, there are very few differences between the genders, he's rich enough to afford it, and he clearly has more of an interest in fashion in general - but I think the fact that he has a clear canon preference for masculine styles is significant, and I'm really annoying, so it kind of does bothers me that this is a controversial opinion. That being said, I don't want to tell people what they Should and Should Not do, because that's lame. Who cares. He's a fictional character, let people draw him in dresses. Would be very happy if this post causes people to draw him in different styles of dresses though

Do you think Mass Effect's character writers deserves more recognition for how they managed to turn an entire generation of people sexually and/or romantically and/or aesthetically attracted to someone who is essentially a featherless spacebird?
No because they did it entirely by accident, tried to placate the confusing requests by female fans to make him romanceable but because that was not something they planned for they were still writing him primarily removed from being a romance partner and were more focused on writing him as the "best friend" character to MShep (not realising this is EXACTLY why the female players (as well as gay players) liked him) and by Mass Effect 3 they just threw up their hands and went "WELL HELL! YOU GUYS LIKE HIM SO MUCH YOU GET ALL THE ROMANCE THEN!!!"
Garrus' writing as a romance was a perfect storm of factors, many completely out of the writers' control that even they themselves completely missed until their players POINTED IT OUT TO THEM. Garrus is lightning in a bottle of unplanned factors, incredible voice performance, the writers willing to comply to player feedback, and the symbiotic relationship Bioware had with their fans and players.
Garrus is an incredibly well written character in his own right, that's WHY he's such a good romance option and the best one Bioware has ever had. But a part of this was luck, chance, and willingness to adapt his character to what a subsection of fans wanted.
Proof further by every single romance Bioware has since written with the INTENT of making them exactly what their female players want, never hit the same way Garrus did. And speaking personally, none of their other romance characters in any of their games scratches the same itch.
Also "Featherless Spacebird" means nothing to me because my "sexual attraction" level is lower than 0. It's not DESPITE him looking like that. It's BECAUSE he looks like that. Not because I find him physically attractive, but because he does not resemble something I am supposed to be physically attracted to in any way shape or form.
I like the way Garrus looks because he's Garrus. And because I like Garrus it means I like the way the turians look.
The caveat of "essentially being a featherless space bird" implies that "haha isn't it CRAZY gamers would be attracted to THAT???"
no.
His personality, voice, performance, and writing is wonderful. Why WOULDN'T players be attracted to that?

watching a video of someone playing an older game (not even THAT old) and constantly having to hear them go 'omg can you imagine how much more pretty and good this would be if it ran at 60+ fps with highest end graphics of the current modern games and in 4k???' over and over while also commenting on some graphics looking slightly muddy and how ugly and shitty 30 fps is
and i just cant help but get incredibly annoyed at that, cant you just appreciate the game for what it is?? the constant focus on smoother everything and graphics so detailed it looks faker than the real world is such a limited view on games- more polygons and higher res textures doesnt equal better ffs
i, and i might out myself with an unpoluar opinion here, but remakes are in my opinion often rather unecessary, just rerelease the old game, just make it avaible for people, officially, you dont have to reprogramm the entire thing!! maybe upscale it a little so it doesnt get stretched into a blurry mess if possible but even that i will work with no problem!! there are cases where its pretty much an entirely different game (FF7?) and i get seeing one of your fav old games get some new paint can be really cool, not arguing against that-
what i dont like is that those remakes replace the original as that isnt made avaible, only the new version- like i wish i could play windwaker on my switch, but i cant stand the "HD" remake of it and i know if it ever were to get ported it will only be that version like the original doesnt exist anymore
and my earlier point that many people consider more fps, more polygons, more resolution as automatically better
i dont need games to be running at 60+ fps, 30 is enough, sure id like it to run smoothly on that without huge drops, but when its stable 30, why would i need more? more often than not i prefer simplified graphics bc they often focus on the most important parts of what they are trying to achieve or work with an interesting style to compensate and i LOVE THAT, also id like to not have to download 100+ GB even when i would turn it on its lowest settings anyway, save me the space- and that is if i even got hardware that can run it at all, my computer struggles with slime rancher and i dont have the funds to buy the newest consoles nor computers
im not against remakes per se, but the fact that the old will more often than not disappear entirely and remain unavaible forever and that higher end graphics are automatically seen as better drives me nuts

Ride 767: Rivalry between warlords
Pag 2
1: Hahaha!
2: Two people are coming up!!
Who is it?
What a force!
Uh... those jerseys... that orange hair....!!
3: It's Sohoku's second year, Kaburagi!!
Hahaha, sorry for the wait! A hero always arrives late!!
Pag 3 / 4
They gathered from all over the country.... to decide the strongest in Japan!!
Pag 5
1: Two people from Sohoku caught up to the lead!!
Uh... Sohoku
Sohoku... and it's two of them!!
2: Senpai, is he strong?
That's the guy who last year competed until the end against Hakogaku for the sprint battle of the first day!!
3: I'll say it again
4: Hahaha, sorry for the wait! A hero always arrives late!!
He really said it a second time!! Does he like that sentence so much!?
Pag 6
1: “Join the lead” completed, Issa!!
Hahaha just as we planned, Danchiku!!
Pag 7
6: Senpai, the fact that they're here
7: means that are chances of winning are lower, right? It means big troubles for us, who used our legs, jumped ahead and got here with so much efforts, right!?
8: That's not a “hero” at all!! Rather, it's the opposite!!
Pag 8
1: Come forward if you wanna be defeated
2: Such an overwhelming confidence!! What arrogant attitude!! Ug!! Ah!?
3: But, somehow, he's a little cool!!
4: Wait wait wait
Wait!!
Pag 9
1: Small, small
You're small!! Sohoku!!
Ah?
2: A man's strength is “thickness”!!
3: Oh
4: Just now there was a guy from Nagoya who also didn't know
Just
5: Tch
6: I wanna make you understand by strength!!
Pag 10
1: Look at this thick neck!!
2: This thick waist!!
3: If you ride a first-class road-bike you should understand too!!
A thick waist is the trunk of your body!! And the trunk is the most important muscle to turn your legs and move your bike forward!!
4: And then, the “neck”!!
5: The heaviest part of the body.... the head accounts for one-fifth of the body
And it supports it from the side!! In other sports, the head is supported by the spine, only in cycling it's supported only by your neck's muscles!! That thickness stabilizes all your movements!!
6: These two things are “thick”!!
Do you understand what it means?
7: Kaburagi-kun!!
Pag 11
1: Let's race!!
2: No need for words, let's speak with our legs!!
How 'bout until the second roadsign!?
4: No problem
5: I'll entertain you!!
6: You'll recognize the “thickness”!!
7: The race between those two is starting!!
Pag 12
1: The thickest volcano in Japan is Sakurajima!!
Pag 13
1: The thickest radish in Japan is the Sakurajima radish
2: Kagoshima's Oosumi jumped ahead!!
Oosumi-kun!! His killer phrase came out!!
3: An explosive acceleration, just like a volcano's eruption!!
4: And his trunk.... his thick trunk
5: is moving forward like a log in a flowing in rapids!!
Pag 14
1: They call me “the raging log of Kagoshima, Oosumi”!!
My way of running is crushing everything!!
2: On the other hand, Sohoku's Issa got a late start!!
3: And his pedaling doesn't even have any explosive power
4: Is his condition not good!?
Pag 15
1: He's pedaling so... unconcerned...
He's just pedaling.... huh!?
4: and yet....
6: He caught up to Oosumi!!
7: H-
Pag 16
1: How!!
2: Your power is “thick” but your power loss is “thick” too
The really fast pedaling... haven't you heard it?
3: Is the one that appears weak at first glance
5: Is that the second roadsign?
6: Since you got here
7: I'll show you
8: He raised his hips from the saddle
Pag 17
1: Hoooooooo
2: My explosive acceleration!!
3: Ra!!
5: Ngh....!!
He's getting smaller in the blink of an eye.....
Pag 19
2: He accelerated with a popping sound!?
3: Hahaha, so how was it?
4: My Special Strong acceleration, that's had another power up since last year?
5: Sohoku defeated Kagoshima!!
The raging log!! And with a huge margin, even!!
Oosumi-kun!!
So strong... is he really a hero?
Pag 20
1: As expected by Issa
You sure show your strength during a “race”
2: Your high power, judgment, and wild instincts are first class
3: With this performance, you erased
4: this leading group's will to fight!!
5: There's 6km left until the...
6: sprint line!!
Pag 21
1: (Kaburagi and Danciku
Leading group)
We've passed a group of some people while coming here, but as expected there's no one else....
2: who will catch u.....
6: ….. Sohoku
Somehow
8: This pressure!!
Pag 22
1: Hakogaku's Doubashi!!
Pag 23
1: Yo!! It's been a while, orange!!
2: I came here to shoot you down!!
3: Thick!! Who is this thick guy!!
4: Ha.... Hakone Acedmy in a moment like this!!
5: What's with this pressure
6: He caught up? Until here and on his own!!
7: Ugh!!
What do we do, Issa!!
Pag 24
1: I won't forgive you...
I'll never forgive you....!!
3: You've arrived after me and so now I look like less of a hero!!
