Okay here it is. The moment that zero of you have been waiting for: My infodump about framing devices and modern audio fiction.

If you're a newer fiction podcast listener, you may have asked, "Why do so many shows pretend to be some real thing?" And if you're a newer fiction podcast creator (as I am), you may have asked, "Do I have to use a framing device?"

Short Answer: It's never been a requirement, but it is fun for some creators, it is useful for some stories, and the tradition of it dates back farther than you might think.

(Extremely) Long Answer:

I would say that the tradition's lineage can be traced back in two directions, separately: horror and radio.

Horror.

This one goes way back. Way way back. Dracula, Frankenstein, etc etc... There really is something about what we would now call "found footage" that creates a workable balance between believable and unbelievable - make it seem like it could have actually happened, however impossible the story is, and (if done right) the horror aspects hit deeper. Combine that with the automatic sense of the unkown that comes from only reading snippets from a few characters' personal perspectives; horror thrives on the unknown.

[Tangent] The podcast Re:Dracula, which I feel should be mentioned here, is a very interesting representation of all this - as a direct adaptation, it maintains the framing device of the novel Dracula: the letters. Its extension of the device is brought not in the audio format but in the RSS feed format. No attempt is made to explain why we're hearing the voices of the characters, as many fiction podcasts default to, rather the immersion comes in experiencing the sense of time between the missives. [End Tangent]

Moving into film, found footage actually took a while to make it onto the scene, but once it did, oh my god did it change everything. Okay, Blair Witch was technically not the first found footage horror film, but we're not going down that rabbit hole. Most would call it the first good one, or at least the first successful one. Which is interesting because at this point we've had plenty of films based on books with framing devices, most of which entirely do away with the framing in the adaptation. So why was 1999 the year film was ripe for framing devices to enter the horror film genre in a big way? I would say it's plausibility. Personal-sized video cameras were now (relatively) affordable, and had been around long enough that people who made and watched films were familiar with them. So it's now a believable thing to be able to cobble together a documentary from clips found on a camcorder, and so they do and now the horror market is changed forever. Next comes copycats, and movies that take the concept and make it their own (like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity), and movies that parody the now-ubiquitous trope (like Grave Enounters).

So by the time fiction podcasts take off, found footage horror is well established as a beloved reawakening of a beloved literary tradition. And it fits easily in audio horror for much the same reasons as it did in video horror. Think Magnus, Archive 81, probably every SCP podcast, and so on. And within audio fiction, the horror genre is very popular and very much a trendsetter, historically speaking.

Radio.

I could probably get away with just discussing a single event here, and you can probably guess it, but I'll try to go for a broader scope than just the autumn of 1938.

So, honestly, as far as I can tell, old radio shows had a habit of using framing devices just for funsies (or at least for lots of different reasons that I could get lost in exploring but I won't). Importantly though, they largely used different framing devices than books had used up to this point. They were innovative, which is an attitude that certainly transferred into modern audio fiction. Without digging too deep into any of them, here's some notable examples:

Let's start with The Shadow because of course we start with The Goddamn Shadow. This one used a very soft framing device, since it doesn't really explain why the audio broadcast exists, just why it's coming to you in audio format instead of visual: The Shadow has invisibility powers. Yeah I know that's a pretty weak connection, but it's a connection the show attempts to imply: The Shadow often manifests as a disembodied voice, and that ties in to it being a radio show. 🤷🏻

Sherlock Holmes (the one with Basil Rathbone) used a somewhat stricter framing device in pretending to be conversations between Holmes, Watson and an interviewer, in which they describe the events of solving the mystery after the fact - pretty similar to the framing of the original books, but adapted well to audio.

Dragnet framed itself as police reports, I think.

Dimension X and X Minus One both, to varying degrees, frame themselves as tales coming to the listener from the actual future and from an actual alternate universe, respectively. (If you ask me, they should have traded names.) Of course, this doesn't make much use of the audio format specifically, but it illustrates that by this point framing devices in audio were a tradition and not unusual at all.

October 30, 1938 was a day that changed science fiction, audio drama, FCC regulations, and probably the entirety of scripted performance art, forever.

Orson Welles' radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds was so flawlessly framed as breaking news that it famously caused something of a mass panic. While the extent of the panic was slightly exaggerated, it's true that the show was so well done that many people who missed the beginning (or didn't pay attention to it) thought the nation was actually being invaded.

The story that they wanted to tell relied heavily on the device of being a purported news broadcast, and there's no doubt that its impact stems from that device - we're still talking about it 90 years later, and not because of the plot of the story.

I'll leave the parallels and differences between the legacy of War of the Worlds and that of The Black Tapes to be explored by someone else.

Modern Audio Fiction Carries On the Tradition.

I've already mentioned TMA, Re:Drac, and Black Tapes.

I haven't mentioned Welcome to Night Vale, which (love it or hate it) was without a doubt one of the biggest catalysts of the audio drama renaissance in podcast form. We all know people who have only ever listened to one fiction podcast, almost invariably either TMA or WtNV. And Night Vale came first and got popular first. Its format as a small-town news radio broadcast has been imitated, innovated, responded to, and intentionally avoided more times than I can count. Very much worth mentioning is that Night Vale popularized the idea of using a framing device not as a way to add plausibility to its stories (nothing could, it's peak absurdism after all), but to add structure. The author knows what to write where, the listener knows what to expect when. Another appeal of framing devices, and another reason why they're so widespread.

Tapes.

Ah yes the tapes. Horror podcasts and their tapes. Drowning in tapes (/lh). It works so well because (a) it's an easy fit for found footage audio, (b) it adds a "spooky" analog horror vibe, and (c) it's fun and fairly easy to design, and forgives a lot in terms of recording quality and editing skill - good for creators at all levels of proficiency. Voicemail and voice memos have similar benefits but without the well-loved "spooky analog" aspect.

Limitations.

The Bright Sessions, Moonbase Theta Out, Wolf 359, and quite a few others all have something in common: they eventually gave up their framing devices. In my opinion, the shows' improvements after doing so is not by any means a reflection on framing as a concept, but instead a demonstration of a show's need to adapt as it grows. Sometimes Episode 149 follows the same form and format as Episode 1, sometimes it doesn't, and a creator's ability to accurately assess whether the format fits the story they want to tell leads to decisions like this (which can be really difficult decisions to make), but ultimately, doing what's best for the story itself always pays off.

When you choose a framing format, you sort of lock in how you're going to write the show and what it's going to sound like. This can be very useful. Like in writing poetry, some of us work better under constraints - it causes us to flex our creativity. It also, as explained above, creates a framework, a formula, which can make it easier to outline an episode.

But it doesn't work for every story. Some shows hold on to their framing devices too long, the plot filling and stretching the format until the frame is bursting at the seams. Conversely, though, I say a series shouldn't abandon a device if it doesn't need the new narrative freedom to further the story - something to fill the absence of the episode format as a player itself in the work.

Form as Storytelling.

This is, in my opinion, one of the greatest (and too often untapped) strengths of framing devices in any medium. I LOVE IT when a piece of art uses its medium as part of the art itself. What part of your story can you only tell because of the medium you're using? What unique part of your medium can you use to enhance the story?

Some absolute favorite examples of this idea from other media, in no particular order: the ending of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, the very end of Zelda TotK, Shakespeare's frequent use of play-within-a-play, the Thor fight in God of War, tons of bits of Series of Unfortunate Events (the books), the twist and out-of-game-play in DDLC, all of WandaVision, the elephant scene from It Takes Two, Asteroid City...

It's something I kind of want to see more of in audio fiction: powerful moments in using the medium of audio as a tool to tell the story rather than only a limitation to be written around. Framing devices help with this, but there are a lot of opportunities in other tools too. I find it in horror and comedy series, and few other places.

Conclusion.

This went on way longer than I expected. I have too many thoughts about it. To sum up:

Why are there so many shows pretending to be some real thing? Because there is a very strong tradition of it in audio fiction, because it provides a lot of structure and benefits especially to newer creators, because it allows for the medium to be part of the art form in a way, and of course because it's fun!

Should I use a framing device in my fiction podcast? My dear, nobody can answer that but you! Ask youself if it would improve your story, if it would improve your writing ability, if it sounds fun to you, and if it would create a show that you would want to listen to (I always say that you should be your own target audience; if you would want the thing to exist, odds are someone else will enjoy its existence). If you use one, you're in good company; if you don't, you're in good company. If you start with one and drop it for season 3, or if you start without one and pick it up partway through, you're in good company. You can do a full-cast immersive found-footage show with sound effects, you can do an audiobook as a podcast, and you can do anything in between!

On Anon since I cannot ask this from my sideblog, but do you think that the hyperfocus the fandom has on Slaneesh being as this sex deity in Warhammer fan spaces comes from the perceived connection between Slaneesh and queerness?

I ask because I've seen you talk about similar things in the comments about how Fulgrim was presented; I feel like those issues with understanding Slaneesh also come from how Fulgrim was written being corrupted by them.

Cause, yes Slaneesh has as sexual aspect to them, but it feels like that is all people talk about when discussing it.

Well I technically don’t blame them for focusing Slaanesh on sex given that the authors themselves did write Slaanesh as “the sex god” and focused her on “degeneracy” - the word itself being a fascist dogwhistle used against sexual liberation, queerness and many more.

I’m going to post the first part of my essay on this soon but while as a fandom we can analyze Slaanesh from a non-problematic perspective, the way the authors wrote her is focused on “degeneracy” - the (false) concept of which being the only umbrella that fits all slaaneshi things: addiction, sex, sexual perversion, “artistic perversion”, sex crimes, immoral sexual acts, bodily mutilation (the fact that piercings and tattoos are included here in canon is also big time problematic and adds on to the “fascist dogwhistle” pile by alluding to the popular fascist talking point that body modification is “self mutilation”, “destroying your perfect god given body”, “a violation of nature” and “degeneracy”. During Fulgrim’s apotheosis there’s a line where his tattooed skin peels off to reveal his original “perfect, unmarred” skin before he turns into a snake.).

This is the thing with Warhammer man, while I can see that the story was meant to be anti fascist and overall left leaning there are so many elements such as this which are confusing me because they end up supporting right wing viewpoints.

The story of Magnus is another such example: person born with a marginalized identity which is feared by society for being dangerous and demonic, fights for his right to be himself openly, is humiliated publicly, rejected by his family, forced into suppression, his father tells him to suppress himself for his own good yet he keeps fighting for freedom and independence on his own to prove that his identity isn’t dangerous but then the story ends up proving that he indeed is dangerous and demonic, his oppressive father’s cautionary tale became exactly true and he is kidnapped and enslaved by a demon. So what are we supposed to take from this? That when your authoritarian father tells you something you should listen without questioning him? When he tells you to suppress your authentic self just listen to him and assume he knows things you don’t? Be scared to explore your identity because you might ruin your life, everyone’s life and live in eternal regret ? Just accept conformity? Accept that you are inherently dangerous and bad? What are we even meant to take from this?

If I’m being very generous then we could say: support your queer kids and queer ppl otherwise they might fall into the hands of evil ppl who are waiting to take advantage of them at a vulnerable time, I guess? But being a psycher in 40k is still dangerous and demonic, supportive parent or not, so again, idk. Idk where we’re supposed to go here.

Maybe that’s the same take for Fulgrim’s story? Allow people to be themselves and explore themselves or they will be repressed and approach liberation in an unhealthy way and slip down bad paths like addiction, mix in with bad crowds or be taken advantage of? That’s the most generous way you can interpret this

What are we meant to take from Fulgrim’s story? Actually listen to your fascist dad because self exploration and sexual & artistic liberation will lead you to demonic possession and corruption and you will eventually turn into a rapist freak who’s crazy? Exploring art is dangerous? Experimenting with things and trying new things is dangerous? Pleasure is dangerous? Again, what is the message meant to be here

I feel like Warhammer has these core criticisms of the way the Emperor handled the primarchs like in the case of every traitor primarch, but instead of the moral of the story being “the emperor is wrong and fascist and the primarch was right to demand xyz” the moral of the story ends up being “the emperor is always right and the primarch was stupid and naive for wanting xyz, actually their fascist dad wanted what was best for them all along and they should’ve listened to him when he dished out rules with no explanation, no questions asked, life’s tough and unfair, you actually have to live repressed and neglected under fascism and can’t actually be free and happy or demons will kidnap you and society will collapse”.

We see a running theme of “a functioning society demands the sacrifice of your freedom and empathy and wanting all three at once is native and impossible”. - again GW, what are we meant to take from this?

Freedom, liberation, self exploration, self expression, love, happiness, gentle parenting, parental love, fairness, etc are seen as naive, impossible concepts which one should just accept not having because wanting such will lead you to the arms of demons, ruin, degeneracy, getting lost and social collapse - again, maybe I’m just not getting it but that’s the way the message of the Horus Heresy ends up coming across if I’m not doing mental gymnastics

It’s all under the umbrella of degeneracy and fear mongering about letting ppl do what they want to look for happiness and fulfillment in a fascist world under an oppressive neglectful narcissistic father.

Again, the most charitable interpretation I can find is “love your kids or else-“

But then again, the primarch’s falls, except for Lorgar, aren’t even them choosing chaos as an attempt to self liberate but instead being brainwashed and forced / tricked into chaos by magical objects or traps. Neither chose out of true free will. So you built up this whole thing of “cautionary tale for rowdy kids, listen to your dad”, but the kids did listen to their dad and their corruption wasn’t even their choice at all so again, where are we going with this? What are we trying to say?

Again, someone tell me if I’m stupid or I’m not getting it.

The reason Slaanesh is associated with queerness is because ppl are responding to an obvious dogwhistle. Wether the authors meant it or not, they did the thing.

Queerness is one of the first things under attack in a conservative crusade against “degeneracy” and many elements of said “degeneracy” echoed by conservatives are core elements of queerness and queer culture or intersect with it (given that queerness questions, deconstructs and opposes normative white supremacist society and its values which is conservative at its core) like being alternative, bodily autonomy, body modification, bdsm, art (mainly abstract, experimental and modern art), music (same adjectives as above), unique and unconventional fashion and style exploration, sexual diversity such as polyamory or orgies, defying gender norms, camp, taking up space - these are all parts and signifiers of “Slaanesh” the way it’s described in Warhammer.

The authors of Warhammer wanted to make a demon based on “degeneracy” but because “degeneracy” itself is a fake fascist concept made up to hate queer ppl it ended up just echoing queerness (+ a bunch of harmful stereotypes added on which conservatives think queer ppl do or want to do). If that makes sense.

The right-wing fandom is responding by being homophobic and seeing Slaanesh as a caricature and cautionary tale against queerness (which it is) and the queer fandom is responding by reclaiming Slaanesh and Fulgrim as symbols of camp, liberation and free expression, reflecting on their own journeys of living their truth, either with mental gymnastics or simply ignoring the negative aspects.

For me, as a queer person, I can’t do the latter. It’s too obviously a hitpiece against everything I am and makes a mockery out of everything I went thru as a queer artistic person from a conservative christian upbringing.

So many aspects of my journey of self liberation included dying my hair, experimenting with my style, bold makeup, experimenting with my sexuality and myself as a sexual person, wearing sexy clothes, getting deep into art, experimenting with abstracts, looking beyond what’s seen as socially acceptable by my conservative surroundings, unlearning purity culture, close mindedness and anti-intellectualism, letting go of the fear of exploring what is ultimately harmless parts of human existence and have only been demonized and stimgmatized by christianity and conservatives. Reading the Slaanesh story makes me feel like I did something wrong, like what I did was wrong and dangerous, like it’s leading me down a slippery slope where I will eventually end up a crazy evil criminal who hurts people, just like conservatives believe. It’s the whole “if we allow gay ppl to exist they will try to legalize sex with animals next,” argument brought to life.

And unfortunately as much as I love Warhammer I won’t gaslight myself, let other well meaning fans gaslight me or do mental gymnastics to avoid recognizing that clear aspect of the story.

It IS making me heavily uncomfortable because I feel “called out” about something I should not be called out about because I did nothing wrong. Exploring myself as a queer alternative person sexually and artistically isn’t wrong or dangerous. But the story is making me feel guilt and worry and triggering basically all of my traumas, especially religious and moral fears around being demonic, aligned with evil, immoral and mentally corrupted by being who I am. That I’m doing something wrong and if I wanted to “be on the right path” I needed to deny parts of myself and forego my own happiness for the sake of “common sense” and “doing what’s right”. The feeling that I had to choose between my own happiness and freedom vs the right thing. Which is simply wrong. And the story of Fulgrim and Slaanesh is retelling that very “cautionary tale”

It’s the reason you sadly don’t see me engage with that part of the Heresy story or Fulgrim as a character, despite me loving him so so much. It’s all too triggering because I just disagree with the whole notion of his story and I can’t go along and pretend that it’s just fiction, it means nothing, there is no message, I can’t see implications and I’m fine with all of this. At least not me personally.

Very important that I note that this take or stating the obvious fact that this is isn’t an attack to Fulgrim / EC fans, as I said, Fulgrim as a character is my favorite right up there with Konrad, but the story around him makes me so deeply uncomfortable because of all the things I listed and more that I can’t look past it or work within it. If you can, you do you. Every Fulgrim fan I’ve seen is queer, trans or both so if you can reclaim his story and vibe with it then I’m more then happy for you. So please don’t take this as an attack or an offense, all my grudges are with GW / Warhammer and their writing not the Fulgrim fandom. If you can find happiness, love and self expression in the story and it’s characters I’m happy for you.

Another fun thing about IVF treatment is that during the stimulation phase when you're using medications to get your ovaries to grow and then mature as many eggs follicles as possible, they ask you to wear condoms if you have sex. Because whilst you hopefully should not ovulate before they can collect most of your eggs, there's a small chance that you might...and having sex around that time might get you pregnant with a ton of embryos simultaneously.

Which is a nightmare because it would be extremely dangerous to you and the potential babies to actually try to carry that kind of pregnancy to term without reducing the number of embryos.

Now, it's 30+ degrees Celsius in London and we don't have AC, so between feeling like sticky melted popsicles that have fused together whenever we touch, and rules around how long you need to abstain around the procedure or giving a sample... this is unlikely to be a problem.

But I find it amusing that... after years of being demonstably infertile, the doctors are like "you've been injected with Super Fertile Serum. You're now Too Powerful and potentially Extra Fertile, which needs to be contained. So wrap up, because getting frisky could make you the next Octomom".

Like...what a turnaround.

On a related note, I also found it amusing being asked the "could you be pregnant or are you trying" question in the run up to IVF. I have loved telling clinicians "well yes and also no". Make me pee in a cup if you like. Do whatever you need to do.

There are so many levels:

We are trying so, yes, no precautions were used. Technically there is always a chance.

We have fertility issues so it's very unlikely we'll conceive naturally. Not impossible, but odds are low.

I'm tracking all parameters and can tell you, on any given day, with reasonable accuracy, whether I've even ovulated this cycle and I can tell you if I can't be pregnant yet this month or there's a tiny chance.

You end up taking pregnancy tests religiously when you've been trying for a while - so if I was, I would know pretty damn quickly. It's possible to find out before you've even missed a period.

All of this basically means that despite my actively trying? I'm probably considerably less likely to be unknowingly pregnant than an average person. Because most people don't track their cycles closely, many people don't track these things at all, and a lot of people use protection inconsistently or don't use it at all. And many don't test until they start to get vague symptoms or miss a period.

Some other things I'm throwing in that are tangential is the sound of it. Namely how strange (to us, the audience) it sounds.

Here's a brief description of drow music for reference:

Strange, atonal, alien, haunting. A ghostly wail and agonized, melodic shrieks. Ancient elven song that's now joyless. I think A LOT about what Drow music sounds like and I never have a good answer to this. But I think this paints a pretty good picture, at least conceptually. But I would struggle to offer up a concrete example of what exactly that sounds like.

The brain worm today is drow opera.

I've talked about Coranzan being musically inclined thanks to his mother's instruction and that he was an actor doing propaganda pieces for a while.

So naturally... My brain went to opera as a cross section of those things and now I'm obsessed with the idea. I am putting Coran in there for his pre-Surface days.

It's the perfect venue for entertainment, propaganda, political showmanship and positioning, grandeur, and not to mention the absolute sadism possible as a part of it. For the audience and the singers.

@front-facing-pokemon (this blog) is rapidly approaching its end! you may have noticed if you’re paying attention to the remaining pokémon in the pokédex, but we’ve only got like TEN DAYS before we reach the END of the pokédex and i have nothing left to post on this blog. yesterday, i queued up the FINAL pokémon in the national pokédex, and have thus RUN OUT of pokémon to queue up!

so what happens now? well, that’s up for you to decide! this is That One Post where you can drop all your suggestions as to what should happen to this blog once we reach the end of the national pokédex! i’ve already heard things such as redoing the whole pokédex but this time it’s shiny (top contender right now!), back-facing pokémon, and turning this into a poll blog, so those are already in the running! if you have any other ideas (that are pokémon-related, please—and if they stick to the theme of the blog [like shinydex], that’s even better)

once i get enough suggestions and filter through for the ones that i like or that are viable, i’ll make one final poll that will decide the fate of this blog. Aaa ok I never thought I'd share this thing anywhere but lately the ml fandom, specifically the Lt au and @sillysiluriforme's work has been really inspiring me. So I introduce to you Emmanuelle Emilie Agreste.

She's an old miraculous oc I've had for years and never done much with outside of my own head tbh. She's Adrien's older sister and also a sentimonster, created bc in my mind/version of things Emilie had to give up on a lot of her acting career after moving to Paris and marrying Gabriel.

So instead she makes Emmanuelle, an almost perfect copy of herself, (except for the eye and hair colour, Gabriel's and Nathalie's respectively as little Easter eggs bc she thinks it's cute, but Emma ends up dying her hair and wearing contacts all the time anyway), who will never age or get wrinkles and who has a head start in the industry by starting acting work as a child. A dress up doll she can mold into the actress she could have been if she'd started earlier, who she can live vicariously through while she stays at home.

Less of a daughter and more of an advertisement, a way for the world to never forget her. Because this child has her face and her voice and will never shut up about honouring her legacy. The concept of Emilie the actress will live on far longer under a slightly different name. Also less of a daughter and more of her biggest fan. The perfect protogee who listens to all her advice and never has alternate ideas on how to do things and will never speak badly of her.

Essentially she exists to stroke Emilie's ego and Act and that's all she really knows how to do at the end of the day. Girl who is so normal about her mother and definitely has a personality outside of her career.

I picture her role as like. Minor/secondary villian (bc she was helping Gabriel through making more possible akumas on purpose bc she wants her mom back too) who has an eventual 'redemption arc' but they aren't actually a better person and it's only bc their brother is a hero it turns out and they like him more than their father. She really only cares about her mother and Adrien, who she is protective of but also more than fine lying to. She thinks he's a dork for wanting to go to public school but whatever. It's fine, Chloe will tell her if something goes wrong there.

She's in the range of 19-22 somewhere, and she works in a lot of projects not exclusively in France, so she's usually travelling and away from home. She's known for getting into relationships with her costars that start when the project is in development and somehow always ends once the hype is over. Adrien talks to her over the phone more than he sees her in person until she gets 'trapped' in Paris for coming home during the akuma crisis and has to actually start living in her TV show set never breathed in room.

I don't think she'd actually work/exist in the Lt au bc my version of Emilie in my head is a different kind of freak than the Lt version, who I do not think would make her. But it's fun to play around with anyway.

Specifically I just keep thinking abt her relationship with Lt chloe tho, bc in my little head world she's Chloe's awful terrible manipulative cool older friend/mentor figure who encourages all her worst traits for funsies and to bring about more akumas. And Lt adds another interesting layer to their dynamic in that chloe is also a sentimonster made to resemble her mother, and both of them idolise their mothers desipte them being not actually that great. girl who was made by her mother to be a copy of her mother vs girl who was made by her father to be a copy of her mother. surely this mentorship will go normally.

I also imagine her being like an awful older sister/mentor figure to the galattaca girls too. At her core she is an enabler and someone who turns a blind eye to fucked up shit to stay 'comfortable'. (And a manipulative asshole too.) What I'm saying here is I think she could make Aurore specifically so much worse and would have fun doing it. Evil girl and her younger blonde apprentices 💙

Summary: shes my horrible evil daughter I'm throwing her in the trash, I'm giving her a biscuit, she needs to face consequences for what she's done I'm denying her the catharsis of punishment she will learn to make meaningful change and mend her relationships, she's great in theory but not in practice, she shouldn't exist and she knows it, she's like if a show pony developed sapience. Arrax here; I want Vox's full out demon form to be some horrifying eldritch being, like...I dunno maybe Vox's form is Vox's electricity--omly his, his Cyan electricity that the city uses.

Like, Vox gets shot with an angelic bullet and he falls. Everyone thinks he's dead, and yest Vox's employees are still fighting. The Vox's screen lights up, as does every single screen in the surrounding area, and you hear this draconic, viscous snarl and using all 8 screens that are around him, fully demonic Vox breaks out, and he terrifies everyone.

oh, thats a very interesting concept!!. my favourite ever FULL full demon form of vox comes from RHTVS, where he has (technically...) two full demon forms, one as a giant white electricity beast and another being like this giant kaiju mecha

something like a cross between the gun devil and the falling devil, where he's still somewhere "close" to an approximation of a human body (bc for some reason, vox just strikes me as the type of person to cling onto what human parts of himself he still has. might just be me tho), but built up of a mixture of mechanical wires, electricity, and the souls under his contracts. id imagine like the gun devil, many many many fucking television screens would be incorporated onto his body.

also, in the situation youve posed, i cant help but imagine a scenario where vox never told anyone about this form before, and everyone (even the vees!) truly thought he might be dead for a moment, the power around hells pride ring slowly flickering and crashing as his opponents revel in having taken down one of prides top overlords- before they start screaming. limbs start to burn from an overwhelming amount of static electricity in the air, a smell of ozone and burnt bits wafting through the streets of the entertainment district as vox reaches forward with arms constructed of pure electricity and strings of wiring, pulling forward until he stands up, form flickering with static and power. every broadcast flicks on, and the unfortunate sinners too weak to resist the pulls of their screen are pulled in toward him until he consumes them too, fueling him with only more ammunition for the fires.

i think about so many books that i gave four stars on goodreads every day…

I get using no specific iteration of the TMNT in a crossover and just making yet another new version. After all, the franchise has had many, many different versions at this point, so it's easy to accept that this is simply one more to add to the pile.

But Naruto has... one. Just the one. So when all of a sudden characters are written/shown to have expertise that they shouldn't have at the age they're being depicted, it just ends up feeling weird.

I get that fitting things into the Naruto timeline can be a chore. Do it too early, and Sakura is kinda useless. Do it too late, and Sasuke's off murdering people. And if you try to set it after the series, the power levels are seriously gonna be out of whack.

But breaking the only canon that has ever existed for these characters makes them feel like... not the same characters. I might be the only one who cares about this, but it really took me out of the story, to the point where I couldn't help but focus on it. I don't want to be distracted from page one of a silly ninja crossover comic.
