Little Zuko and little Azula love Lu Ten. They love Lu Ten so much, they successfully smuggled themselves into Lu Ten's baggage when Lu Ten left to go fight.
Lu Ten, meanwhile, finds out that his little cousins snuck along for the ride way too late.
He knows they're gonna lose the fight.
He isn't about to let a couple of little kids die like that, murdered by Ba Sing Se soldiers too hyped up by war.
He may have been prepared to put his own life on the line, but he's not sacrificing Zuko or Azula's. But he also knows that if he flees the field with them, then Ozai will absolutely use that as an excuse to "punish" his own children.
Lu Ten does not want to know what that punishment entails. He is, in fact, more terrified by whatever it may be than the literal war raging outside his tent.
So.
So.
He swallows his pride for his country, his love for his father, and his dreams of being a successful general.
He grabs the kids, fakes his death, and runs.

What would you think, if, after getting advice from Iroh, Zuko and the gang travel to the spirit world in order to find Aang’s people so that Aang can teach the air acolytes more about the air nomads? Zuko and the others are able to get into the spirit world using a portal. But Zuko gets attacked by a mysterious spirit and then hits his head. He reverts back to post banishment (but pre Season 1) Zuko after losing some of his memories. The gang manage to get Zuko out of the spirit world before the portal closes, but Iroh and Ursa don't make it out in time and end up getting trapped there. Zuko is confused and doesn’t know why he’s firelord. The gang try to explain things to him, but it only causes him to become even more confused. Aang and the gang then leave Zuko behind to spend more time with the air acolytes.
While they’re gone, Zuko is very uncertain about what to do, especially since his dad is presumed dead, but soon corrupt advisors convince him to restart the war. Zuko doesn’t remember his friendship with Aang, but he hears that he once joined Aang, so Zuko assumes that Aang once brainwashed him into joining team Avatar and turning against his Father. Zuko intends to be a much greater firelord than his father, and he and his army raid the air acolyte settlement in their airships in order to hunt down Aang once again, and end up burning down the settlement. Aang and the gang wonder why Zuko chose to hunt them down again. Aang eventually comes to the conclusion that Zuko backslid due to bad advice from his advisors and because he lost some of his memories. Aang then travels the nations and studies things like chakras in order to look for a cure to help restore Zuko’s memories.
Azula is now alone and more vulnerable than ever because the fire warriors have deserted her, and Zuko sends bounty hunters after her to capture her. Azula tries to escape one of the bounty hunters, but she gets bitten by the bounty hunter's poisonous snake. The bounty hunter offers to give Azula the antidote for the poison if she'll give herself up, but Azula refuses. Azula finds help in the village of Jang Hui where she is healed by two waterbenders who are taking refuge there. Jang Hui is the village Katara helped in The Painted Lady. And the villagers aren’t on good terms with the firelord. The villagers accept her and assume that she’s on their side because she’s made an enemy of the Firelord. The villagers teach Azula how to heal people using firebending techniques inspired by water bending, and she ends up becoming a fisherwoman because it’s a fishing town.
She starts to warm up to the town, but one day she overhears the waterbenders talking about sneaking out to sabotage the smelting factory (which is currently undergoing reconstruction) in order to help the villagers. Azula offers to join their mission, and the three sneak out to destroy the factory, but she betrays the waterbenders over to the fire nation in hopes that she might bring glory to the fire nation. But now that the waterbenders are captured and eliminated, the town is defenseless. Zuko’s army burns the town down leaving few survivors. Zuko didn’t exactly authorize the attack, but he did give his generals permission to do whatever it takes to stop the villagers from trying to halt the rebuilding of the factory used for the war effort. A few survive and declare revenge on Azula for what she did.
Azula starts to feel terrible about betraying the people who saved her life and indirectly causing the village to be destroyed, since she didn’t know it would be destroyed. And she holds Zuko partially responsible for destroying the village. Members of the army give her a head start before they start chasing her. After wandering around, Azula looks through a telescope and sees Aang try to save a fire nation village from a volcano, and she also sees Zuko. Zuko does nothing after his corrupt advisors tell him to leave the village, saying that Aang will probably die, so Zuko runs away. But Aang manages to save the village from the erupting volcano. Azula gets accepted into the gang when she uses her new healing abilities to heal Aang, who is wounded by the volcano.
Later, Aang uses his newly developed powers to find out the real cause of Zuko's memory loss and he discovers that it wasn't because of the head injury. Zuko's memory loss was due to a spirit possessing him. The spirit was trying to make Zuko succumb to his darkest impulses by fogging specific memories. The more Zuko succumbs to darkness, the more control the spirit has over Zuko. Once the spirit gains full control over Zuko's body, Zuko's spirit will cease to exist. The Spirit is really Azulon. Aang realizes that he needs to expel the spirit from Zuko, and he knows he can't expel the spirit from Zuko if he has a heart filled with anger.
The gang have to stop Zuko (who now uses chemical weapons in the war) from conquering the Northern Water tribe using chemical weapons launched from his airships and finishing what his forefathers started. Soon the spirit of Azulon seemingly has full control over Zuko. It's ambiguous how much of Zuko's actions is his fault and how much of Zuko's actions is the Spirit's fault. "Zuko" soon leads a fleet towards the Northern Water Tribe to destroy it, and he even shoots down and kills Appa while laughing. Driven by grief, Aang tries to kill "Zuko", thinking things will be easier this way, but Azula jumps in his way and gets seriously wounded. Aang then expels the spirit of Azulon out of Zuko causing Zuko to return to normal, and Azula manages to survive her wounds.
Anon this is INSANE
I love this idea because I genuinely don’t think Aang could forgive him for Appas death. But I think that this would probably end with Zuko unaliving himself from the guilt. I wish there was a way that this could have a happy ending but I don’t think there is. It’s so heartbreaking and if a:tla was a horror show then this would be AMAZING

1- Don't write me things that are about Zuko, that boy already has too many things, this account is only for and by Azula.
2- I support you as a writer, you need to write a fucking book about this.
3- I love that Azula has healing powers, she needs to be everyone's fucking boss.
4- YOU NEED TO WRITE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT, GIVE ME THE LINK.

Hey!
This concept is really interesting, I like the idea of Zuko being possessed by Azulon but I'm not sure that it would get as far as him having the opportunity to attack the Northern Water Tribe unless it was well hidden so that the others didn't suspect anything until it was too late?
I'm also not sure that the Gaang would leave Zuko if they thought he had lost his memory, I can see Sokka or Katara insisting that he can't have the the throne until he recovers and they get Aang to enforce it? Like maybe he loses his throne for a while and the spirit uses the loyalty of certain soldiers who don't think the Avatar has the authority to dethrone the Fire Lord to start the assaults until he forces his way to getting the throne back?
Or it could be that the Gaang have no idea that anything has changed with him until they start hearing reports of the Fire Lord ordering violence and when they try to confront him they find they're not allowed into the palace anymore?
I love the idea of Azula being a healer, I think it would really change her dynamic with the Gaang! a
Overall I think this kind of idea could definitely work and it would interesting to see!!

What would you think, if, after getting advice from Iroh, Zuko and the gang travel to the spirit world in order to find Aang’s people so that Aang can teach the air acolytes more about the air nomads? But Zuko gets attacked by a poisonous spirit and reverts back to post banishment(but pre Season 1) Zuko after losing some of his memories due to the poison fogging his mind. Zuko is confused and doesn’t know why he’s firelord. The gang try to explain things to him, but it only causes him to become even more confused. Aang and the gang then leave Zuko behind to spend more time with the air acolytes. While they’re gone, Zuko is very uncertain about what to do, but soon corrupt advisors convince him to restart the war. Aang then travels the nations looking for a cure to help restore Zuko’s memories.
Azula escapes from the mental institute and Zuko sends assassins after her. One of the assassins wounds her, so Azula finds help in the village of Jang Hui where she is healed by two waterbenders, who are taking refuge there. She starts to warm up to the town, but one day she overhears the waterbenders talking about sneaking out to sabotage the smelting factory(which is currently undergoing reconstruction) in order to help the villagers.
I think you should turn this into a fanfiction tbh, it seems like an interesting idea. I like the contrasting stories of Zuko and Azula, how one reverts to their old ways and the other grows to become better.
Would Iroh know about all that's going on? I'm assuming he'd be in his teashop, but the gaang would alert him to what happened. Maybe he could help Zuko regain some of his memories before it's too late.
Also the way Aang, the Avatar, saving the vulcano and not being helped by Zuko, the Firelord and his supposed best friend, reflects Avatar Roku's story is so cool.
I feel like I sound like my English teacher analysing all of this but I still like what you did there lol
If you turn it into a fanfic or already have send me the link cuz I wanna read it 🙏

First, thank you for the ask!
Second, wow!!! This idea is making the gears in my head spin.
Zuko going back to season 1!Zuko is an interesting idea. I've seen people give him amnesia which allows him to join Aang but I haven't seen anything where he gets it when he's already joined them. You'd think someone would be around to keep an eye on him if they know he's back to his season 1 self. The corrupt advisors plot line does make some sense because I don't think he got rid of Ozai's old advisors.
I'm torn because a part of me loves that Azula is getting a redemption arc away from the Gaang and Zuko and Iroh. She's finding her own path on her own and it's only later that she decides to join them. The other part of me is sad that she won't interact with the Gaang until later. However, I like the idea of her forming her own life in this little village. The waterbenders are nice to her as are the people and she's even got a job. I do like that there is still that level of realism because she joins the Fire Nation again when she has the chance. It's like a mini version of the Crossroads.
Her joining the group to stop/safe her brother after he left Aang to die is a nice touch. They probably don't trust her and she doesn't really trust them but they have to work together. Also what chemical weapons would Zuko have?
A small touch that could be added is Zuko realizing how far his generals are going and trying to stop them but the advisors somehow get in control. Like Zuko started the whole thing but it's his advisors who carry it out.

Woah, this is an excellent idea for a fic, anon! It sounds very dark and intriguing, and I love the idea of Azula getting her own redemption arc - it sounds like she would be the main character of this AU. I really like the Jang Hui plot line idea too; it would be a great way for her to get to know some average Fire Nationals and see how the Royal Family's actions have negatively impacted not just the rest of the world, but their own citizens.
If you did end up making this into a full-fledged fic, I would definitely check it out! Thanks so much for sharing! :)

This sounds like a pretty crazy AU,anon.

What would you think, if, after getting advice from Iroh, Zuko and the gang travel to the spirit world in order to find Aang’s people so that Aang can teach the air acolytes more about the air nomads? But Zuko gets attacked by a poisonous spirit and reverts back to pre Season 2 Zuko after losing some of his memories due to the poison fogging his mind. Aang then travels the nations looking for a cure to help restore Zuko’s memories.
Azula escapes from the mental institute and Zuko sends bounty hunters after her to capture her. Soon, Azula gets bitten by a snake, so she finds help in the village of Jang Hui where she is healed by two waterbenders, who are taking refuge there. She starts to warm up to the town, but one day she overhears the waterbenders talking about sneaking out to sabotage the smelting factory(which is currently undergoing reconstruction) in order to help the villagers.

After wandering around the Earth Kingdom to look for a cure for Zuko's memory loss, the gang sees a massive stream of fire pour down from a few fire nation airships hovering above a village. The stream of fire burns the village to the ground, leaving few survivors. It turns out that fire nation scientists developed a highly addictive serum that can increase the fire power of any fire Bender. The downside is that prolonged use of the serum results in loss of the senses, and eventually death. Senses such as taste, smell, sight, touch, and hearing. Zuko intends take the serum and lead a fleet of airships to finish what his Dad started by burning the Earth Kingdom to the ground. After learning what Zuko intends to do, even Aang feels tempted to give up on him.
it's an interesting concept, but i have a few critiques.
first, if the gaang knows zuko lost his memory, why would they leave him in the first place? and even if they did that, surely there'd be somebody in the palace who could say "hey firelord zuko maybe don't restart the war dude wtf" or at least alert the gaang or something.
second, i've seen a lot of people try to have azula's redemption involve learning some kind of healing, and i gotta say, it very very rarely does anything for me. for starters, it (probably unintentionally) reinforces the northern water tribe's ideology that healing is inherently for women (the show admittedly also did this bc the only named male waterbender who uses any kind of healing in any canon that i'm aware of is unalaq). moreover, it's not something i think azula would be particularly good at or have much interest in.
also, why are there waterbenders in jang hui? it's a fire nation village. you said they were taking refuge, but from what, and why there? on top of that, azula knows zuko is firelord and doesn't know he's lost his memories, so why would she assume betraying the waterbenders to the fire nation would bring it glory? if she just broke out of the asylum, then the last time she saw zuko was when he and katara fought her during the agni kai.
third, if zuko lost his memory to a "poisonous" (???) spirit in the spirit world, why are they searching the earth kingdom for a cure? shouldn't they be looking in the spirit world? aang's the avatar, and iroh's gotten in before, so it shouldn't be the hardest thing in the world.
fourth, if zuko lost all his memories of books 2 and 3, he shouldn't know about ozai's plan to burn everything to the ground, since that wasn't established until after he returned to the fire nation with azula, mai, and ty lee.
finally, even before book 1 began, zuko was deeply loyal to his people, balking at the mere idea of sacrificing newbie soldiers for the sake of a win, so i can't fathom a world where zuko is ok with burning down jang hui (a fire nation village) just cuz.
i'm not trying to say there's no potential here, you have some very interesting ideas, but there's a lot that doesn't really work for me.
(to be fair tho i'm not a huge fan of anything involving much of the air acolytes bc i frankly could not give less of a fuck about them. i don't hate them or anything they just don't mean anything to me)
#atla#it's an interesting concept#but honestly as described here it's more confusing than anything else#also the whole premise relies on the idea that zuko blindly listens to what people tell him to do#which is something he's never once managed ever in his life#also the whole ''let's burn everything to the ground'' was something zuko wasn't remotely ok with#bc unlike azula he hasn't been raised to believe that the right thing to say is whatever makes dad proud of you#he HAS been raised to believe that paternal love has to be earned through blood sweat and tears#but if he knew ozai was in prison then obviously the best way to get his favor would be to let him out and reinstate him as firelord#which would be. very confusing to ozai#imagine just sitting in prison and then your son storms in and tells you he's freed himself of brainwashing and you can be in charge again#then imagine having to explain that the avatar can take away bending now but you'd be happy to help him rule from the shadows#since clearly your daughter wasn't of any use#...actually i think you have the start of a really good toxic father-son bonding experience that absolutely nobody wanted#having said that my biggest piece of advice is to cut the serum idea entirely#it makes no sense in the established atla world#they haven't even got antibiotics over there yet#it'll be awhile before they're inventing super soldier serums to create captain fire nation or whatever#also i'm curious what advice iroh gave that prompted all of this#aang doesn't need to go into the spirit world he has all the previous air avatars on psychic speed dial#oh and why would jang hui hate zuko?#katara definitely would've pushed him to send them help#also they apparently became famous for their seafood after the war#so zuko would probably be pretty well liked by them#again it isn't a bad idea it just needs a lot of workshopping#bc right now it raises way more questions than it seems intent on answering

I don't know but YOU definitely thought about it a lot and you have certainly the material to write your own fanfiction 🙂!
I have a hard time imagining Azula making up with the career of a fisherwoman but it could bring some very funny scenes!
The idea of an amnesic Zuko immediately returning to his true nature is interesting. I don't like the image some fictions give of Zuko seen as a completely redeemed man who never did wrong after war. And it's also interesting to turn Azula into the redeemable one for once, instead of Zuko.
Thanks for the ask!

I mean this sincerely, but you should stop sending people this ask and instead convert it into a fic.
I know that writing a fic can be hard, especially if you have never done it. And there is no guarantee that people will read it, let alone like.
But if you are someone who is bursting with ideas, and it seems that you are, I promise you it is worthwhile.
