Mistyping on MBTI

Introduction 

The purpose of this post is to understand what are mistyping and how they happen. I’ll explain some of the patterns ive noticed when it comes to some of the mistypings as well as some of examples ive I personally disagree with. Please dont take any of this as a personal insult if any of these examples I give are things you've done in the past or the typings I disagree with are your own. 

Case #1Misunderstanding Functions 

-What I refer to by the misunderstanding of functions I mean it's the general purpose of the function and how does this function work and perceive reality. I understand that functions can be complicated and Carl Jung’s definition of Ni can be convoluted and confusing (sometimes just plain vague) however I do think that typing people/characters  needs at least allot of backing up with your knowledge of functions. Usually the misunderstanding I see with each functions comes out in these ways.

Si- Memories/Any form of previously obtained knowledge 

Se-Impulsiveness and Aggression

Fi-Sensitivy and Emotionality 

Fe-Caring

Ti- Thinking in any capacity 

Te-Rudeness 

Ne- Quirks and Quips 

Ni- just knowing stuff

Ex-Sasuke Uchiha (ISFP)- Sasuke is often typed as an INTJ due to his preference for Ni-Fi HOWEVER when it comes to how he perceives reality and his way to deal with conflict its pretty clear he is an Fi dom. There is this misconception of Fi=Sensitivity and Emotionality. However this couldn't  be farther from the truth. Fi is simply preferring your Core Values and desire over the other. His goal was always Fi related NOT Ni related.   

Case#3 Simplification of Functions

Following the last case this is usually the more common one I see when it comes to mistyping usually people will flatten functions or just straight up default to god awful stereotypes of each type when it comes to typing them. You'll often see people “Trope Type” certain charcaters. Most of their arguments revolve around the aesthetic of the character and then their functions. Which is why those peoples typing will usually look like this.

ESXJ-Mean Girl and stuck up

ISXJ-Boring ones

ESXP-Immature,Dumb or straight up substance abuse 

ISXP-Edgy 

XNTP-Quips and Quirks but always the smartest 

XNFJ-Kind Humanitarian

XNFP-Sentimental mess

XNTJ-Villain

Ex-Naruto Uzumaki (EXFP)I know I previously typed him as an ENFP however I've been thinking of the relation of his Se-Ni throughout the show and I might change my typing. However thus far every single Se dom argument I read for Naruto reads like this “ Well he is immature” “he is impulsive and reckless” “ can't be an Ne dom because Intuitive=smart and Sensor=Dumb” sometimes they don't say this word for word but their arguments boil down to this. And I find it quite frustrating cuz those same people look at you straight in the eye and say that you're intuitive bias, even tho they are the ones defaulting to stereotypes. 

Case #4 Positioning of Functions 

Character development in MBTI is more complex than character development in Enneagram. Depending on the movie/tv show the character might either develop their inferior function or their tert function. Which is why understanding the position and model you are using for MBTI and be consistent using it. The position of function is important because they are what defined the person and how they approach data management. Also certain characters might have preference for their tert function rather than their aux functions. Some Characters just use their stack in a very balanced way. 

Ex- Sokka (ESTJ)- He is often typed as an ENTP due to his exaggerated use of Ne in the later seasons. To me at least he is an ESTJ with a preference for TeNe. Sokka never really uses NeTi in the first book. His priority came in form of TeSi (Organizing the environment with a solid metric and detailed positioning of others). His development came in the form of his Ne not Fi. To the point he ends of sticking to it in Book 2 and Book 3. 

Case #4 Character Traits=/=Cognitive Preferences/Perception

Often people conflate how a character/person acts instead of how they think and proceed with conflict. MBTI isnt really a personality theory but rather and understanding of your cognitive process and preference. It's based on how you perceive reality and how you make decisions based on your dominant function. If anything enneagram would be closer to an actual personality test. 

Ex- Amy March (ESFP)- I took such a long time to come to this typing because similarly to Naruto people only talked about how she was an annoying immature child. However her monologue points to her stresses and how she must stick to her SeTe rather than SeFi due to how the environment is working and suppressing women in that era. 

Case #5 Just making things up 

This is the most common one I see when people type characters, they usually just make things up. Sometimes there isn't any contextual evidence on what they are talking about and will mostly differ to broad and vague statements that hold no wait or aren't represented in the narrative. Sometimes they'll just take things out of context and will just go with them and end up convincing people even if their argument is 95% fabricated stuff and the 5% is misunderstanding on their part. 

Ex-Ada Wong (IXTJ)  Ada Wong’s Ti is non existent and no one online has ever written an argument where I there is enough evidence on what they are saying. Ada isnt a person who is interested in analytical process and internal understanding. Even character development comes from XiFi not Fe. Sorry but liking Leon but not really isnt a good argument for low Fe. Her development isnt about understanding the emotional state of the other or in relation to the other but rather the self. Even OG Resident Evil its stated that she struggles with her own values and emotional state . It's almost as if their argument hinges on ISTP=Spy characters. 

Case #6 Misogyny (yeah...we are going there). 

Often in typology you'll notice a dichotomy between Female characters vs Male characters. You'll notice that female characters are twice as likely to get typed as Feelers even when they dont show much usage of any feeling function. Often the arguments I see its in reference to either showing the character struggling emotionally or reacting in some way to something bad happening in their life. But when male characters such as Homelander and Patrick Bateman who have multiple emotional outburst in their runs but most people type them as Te doms. While Female characters that have emotional outburst such as Asuka and Jennifer Harding (Both Te doms) both get typed as ESFP because=SeFi=angry and emotional. It often happens in cases such as Bakugo who gets typed as an ESTP but if a female character does the same thing she gets typed as an ESFP. Im not calling you a misygonist  if you typed any of this characters like this I just think that you should reconsider your typology process. 

Ex-There are allot of these so I just gonna point to a few 

Alice Liddle (INTP) - Being typed as an INFP but very clear her struggle is between Ti-Si and understanding her Fe.

Nancy Wheeler (ESTJ)- Being nice=/=Fe she has always preferred TeSi (organizing and structuring things in step by step processes) Over using Fe. 

Madison Montgomery (ESTP)- Her character is pure SeTi and her struggle with her Fe is shown in both S3 and S8. 

Yenneffer (INTJ)- NiFi reaching the ideal self is her goal also her Te is very on your face.

Everything He Ever Wanted

Hi Guys! This is a new Jay Park fanfic I’m working on (because we are in a serious shortage and us girls need our fantasy fix!) Its about Jay falling in love and wanting to settle down, and all the headache and heartache that ensues (cue lots of angst, sexy times and love :P). I post the stories on Wattpad as I’m not sure if I’d be able to post the full story on here (Tumblr guidelines and stuff) but I am going to be posting the first chapter here and then every time I publish a new chapter I’ll post the links for you to read. The story is for 18ANDOVER! If you are not 18 this story isn’t for you (sorry). And Jay if you are reading this: its pure fantastical fiction! I don’t mean to embarrass or cast aspersions on you in any kind of way. If you are reading this (PLEASE dont lol), I hope I did your fantasy character justice :P. For the rest of you, happy reading!

1. Home Is Where The Heart was

An exhausted sigh left Jay's lips in a rush, as he entered through the  open door and dropped his bags on the heated marble flooring.

Having been away on tour for 6 weeks Jay had a lot of bags to carry; all heavy, all full of laundry.

He paused and took a breath in, savouring the smell of home, the smell of Her.

She  hadn't been home in a long time. This was no longer to be Her home;  hell it hadn't even been Her "home" for longer than a few weeks, most of  which she had spent elsewhere (or rather somewhere else). But since She  had been the last person in the house before Jay had left for the tour,  Her scent still lingered. And it was this scent that invaded Jay's  senses, coiling around his synapses and holding them at ransom as his  mind cast back to the last moment he saw Her.

Jay stood watching   Her leave through the polished glass doors of his office building, Her   words still ringing in his ears like a death knell, "We can't do this   any more Jay, I have to go back and live my life..." She took a pause   here, her perfectly soft and plump lips quivering momentarily, almost as  if to hold Her back from completing the sentence,"... and you have to live yours."

Now the thing is, when Jay first saw Her walk  through the doors; Her soft hair in which he loved to bury his face now  framing Her face in a twist-out that beautifully rippled in the light  breeze of the evening night air as She stepped through the glass door,  his heart had soared and swooped the same way it did every day since the  very first day he had seen Her.

His face broke into an  unstoppable smile as he outstretched his arms to embrace Her,   automatically breathing in Her scent as She stepped into his embrace,   clinging to him as though She would be otherwise flung into the furthest  reaches of space.

Jay hadn't noticed the shine of unshed tears  demanding to be released. He hadn't noticed the taxi outside, and he  certainly didn't know that it was taking Her to the airport.

He was oh-so blissfully unaware of  all of these little details.

She had been going back and forth with this for weeks, months even, ever  since  their relationship had first begun showing signs of becoming  more serious (unbeknownst to Jay). And try as She might, She knew this  couldn't work; there were too many moving parts, too many things to  consider and too many sacrifices to be made. She thought it best that  She end this now before it got too serious and whilst they were still  able to at least salvage some sort of friendship from the wreckage.

Noticing She was lost in thought, Jay nudged Her, asking if She were OK.

Now  on the way over here, She had already told herself  that She wasn't  going to cry and do the whole melodramatic stuff; that She was going to  keep it light and factual and hoped he would understand.

And so  when She quickly lifted Her head to meet his eye, Her face had already  settled into a bright and easy smile, belying the ton of bricks that She  was about to drop onto the smitten and unsuspecting Jay Park.

Now,  as he watched Her leave after begging Her to reconsider ("... you don't  have to do this..."). His heart beat harder with every step She took   to the waiting cab outside. He was frozen helpless, unable to stop this  series of Very Unfortunate and Fucked Up Events.

He watched the taxi drive away, taking with it the only piece of true happiness that he had ever felt in a long, long time.

And he had let it happen.

BZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

The  vibration of Jay's phone broke him out of his reverie with a snap. He  thrust his hand into his pocket and pulled it out, glancing at the  screen as he made his way to the kitchen.

BZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

He paused with his hand on the handle of the refrigerator, his thumb hovering indecisively over the phone screen.

BZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

He  rolled his eyes and pressed the green button, putting the phone to his  ear at the same time as he pulled open the refrigerator door.

"Heeeeeyyyyyy  bro, whatcha doin'?" the gravelly voice of Jay's business partner Mike  came through the phone as vivid as if he were standing in the room,  rather than 5,000 miles away.

"Hey, Mike" Jay chuckled. "Not much, just got back."

"How was the tour?"

"Yeah it was good. The guys killed as usual," said Jay, into an empty fridge.

"Did you get any numbers?" Jay could practically hear the Cheshire Cat smile on Mike's face as he asked this question.

He  sighed as he closed the refrigerator door and made his way to the  living room. "No I didn't get any numbers Mike" Jay said, plopping down  dejectedly onto his plush sofa, allowing his head to fall back, eyes  staring straight at the ceiling.

"Jay, you are really wasting your unlimited pussy allowance, man!"  groaned Mike. Jay chuckled in response, closing his eyes and wearily  raising a hand to rub them. "Dude you should be literally DROWNING in  pussy!"

"I'm too busy for all that extra shit, Mike." Jay sighed.

"Extra  shit? Dude." Mike was all seriousness now, leaving a pause so pregnant  that it caused Jay to sit up and open his eyes. "You are never, too  tired, for pussy!" Jay fell back into his original position, another  exhausted sigh leaving his lips as he landed except this time, he had a  little smile on his face.

Mike's dry humour was a welcome salve right now anyway.

"Plus, Jay; I'm married."

"I know Mike."

"So that means I'm living vicariously through you, my dude!"

"Mike-"

"Look,  forget about all that anyway" Mike interrupted Jay, sensing he was not  perhaps his usual playful self and wondering if he had perhaps struck a  nerve.

Mike was quite intuitive, even if he sometimes came off as  oblivious. In his world, he found that feigning ignorance can sometimes  be a better strategy around people, especially when dealing with the  types of sensitive and high-flying businessmen he was used to dealing  with on a daily basis.

Or when his friend had something - or  someone - on his mind that may need to be discussed away over copious  amounts of alcohol sometime in the near-future.

"Remember you  have the interview with Vogue Korea about the new AOMG site and app,"  said Mike making a mental note to revisit this again at a later time.

"Yeah" sighed Jay gratefully, thankful for the change in subject. "When is it again?"

"Friday. 9.30AM"

Jay pulled his phone away from his ear and checked the screen. The interview would be in three days time.

"Cool, my assistant already has the details anyway. I'll check my emails to see when the car will be arriving."

"Sweet. Hit me up later, so we can talk a bit about the Nike deal. But until then; GET SOME SLEEP."

Mike ended the call.

Jay  allowed the phone to slide from his ear onto the sofa next to him,  bringing both hands up to gently rub his face before dropping his head  back and allowing his arms to drop onto the sofa back. The huge floor to  ceiling windows directly opposite bathed him in the light of the  setting sun, as he allowed his exhausted and aching body to sink deeper  into his seat.

As his mind drifted, he remembered a particular  evening spent on this same sofa during a thunderstorm not too long after  he had first met Her. In fact, there were many evenings he remembered  being spent on this sofa (not all of them as innocent as the particular  evening he currently had in mind however, but all of them just as  enjoyable).

Sharing one of those huge soft furry blankets that  She loved so much, with a low fire burning in the marble wood-burning  fireplace to the right of them.

She had been drinking Jack  Daniel's, and he had been drinking soju, both just talking to and laughing with each other in an atmosphere of comfortability, while   outside torrential rain pounded against the monolithic windows and   brilliant forks of lightening spilt the charcoal grey and roiling sky,   causing occasional rolls of thunder which reverberated throughout the   building.

The dichotomy of the chaos on one side of the window pane, versus the serenity on the other hadn't been lost on either of them.

Every  now again She would interrupt the freely-flowing conversation to point  out a particularly spectacular lightning strike or a close roll of  thunder would make Jay jump, which he would then try to disguise by  acting as though he was just moving positions on the couch or picking  up/putting down his glass (which She very politely acted like She did  not notice, or turned away to hide Her smile - which he had gratefully   appreciated).

Her being in Jay's house had been perfectly  innocent at the time, having being introduced through his artist Jarv  Dee, Jay had innately felt at ease around Her. She had an easy-going and  relaxed nature, with a quick wit and genuine smile. He became further  intrigued when he found out that She was a full-stack developer and  promptly discussed possibly working together on something some time.  Which is how the new AMOG website and H1gher app came about.8

That was exactly one year ago from today and 5 months from the day She ripped out Jay's heart and stomped all over it.

"We can't do this Jay..."

Her words echoed around his head like a death knell.

Jay  had spent every waking moment carefully analysing every detail of their  interactions - every facial expression, every vocal inflection - in the  hopes of being able to at least understand WHY She had done this.

Did he say something - do something - to scare her off?

How, when things were going so good between them, could she just end everything and leave so suddenly?

Jay  was aware that he was getting older but, he hadn't really ever thought  of what the future would look like for him and who he would want to  settle down with. The kind of jet-setting lifestyle Jay led meant he had  the luxury of being able to avoid thinking about such things under the  guise of being "too busy".  And with the fast life Jay led, the women he  came across had been just as fast.

That is until he had met Her.

Meeting Her had made him truly question his life dynamic, made him want to change his dynamic.

Made  him think about when would be the time to put down the mic for good and  step back to make way for the younger artists coming up behind him?

Jay  had almost single-handedly built an entire musical empire in a foreign  land, which meant he really had to think about who it was he wanted to  share that with.

A thought he had never needed to have before Her.

She  had awakened something in him that he had been confident was dormant,  something which he had convinced his concerned parents and nagging  brother he wasn't quite ready for.

She made him think more of the life after. After all the parties, interviews, world travelling, and screaming fans.

Of the life he lived when he was just Jay, the dorky kid from Seattle.

Who did he want to come home to? Who did he want waiting for him when the lights had faded and the music stopped?

The  morning after the lightening storm had been the first time Jay had  woken up to Her. They had fallen asleep where they sat in Jay's plush  sofa, having spent the evening bonding over their respective careers,  old 90s RnB and alcohol. Seeing her head resting upon the opposite  armrest of his sofa, the golden rays of the early morning sun  illuminating the golden undertones of Her skin, made something inside  him sing. He knew he liked having Her around, liked hearing Her voice,  liked knowing she was OK.

He loved being in her presence, hearing Her laugh, seeing Her focused frown whilst She was working.

He loved smelling Her, breathing Her in whenever he could.

He loved hearing Her footsteps on his hardwood floor.

He hated not knowing why it went wrong.

But  in just a few days the H1gher app and new AOMG website was due to go  live, meaning She would be coming back to Korea for the launch.

Meaning She and Jay would be in each other's company for the first time since Her departure.

Meaning Jay would not only have to face Her, but once She left he'd have to relive the pain of her leaving all over again.

Jay groaned inwardly.

This should be fun, he thought humourlessly.

Jay reached for his phone beside him and dialled an all too familiar number.

"Hello?" Came the answer down the line.

"Hey, is she free?"

"Good evening, Mr Park. Yes she is free. Regular timing?"

Jay let out a barely audible sigh, his 1000th in the 45 minutes he'd been home. He wouldn't need too long. "Yeah."

"She will arrive in 30 minutes."

Jay ended the call.

He  stood and made his way to his drinks cabinet, pouring himself some  Hennessey before walking over to the window to take a sip, surveying the  evening sky and awaiting his visitor.

The objective of the visit was purely for the purposes of release.

And as Jay's buzzer rang twenty-five minutes later, he knew that's all anyone who wasn't Her could offer him.

My approach to flat colors + limited palette drawings

This is a follow up to this post  i made about how i go about figuring out a color palette for my limited palette drawings. an anon asked me about my actual technique of finishing them so this is gonna be an explanation of how I work in a limited palette with flat colors. I ended up with these thumbnails for a sketch last time so we’re gonna work from here and I’m gonna sort of walk through how i got to the finished version

first things first: every part of this process is just developed as a result of me messing around. take my advice with a grain of salt and if you think you know a way to do something better/that makes you more comfortable. go with that over what I say.

I’m honestly a little surprised when people express confusion about how i draw like this because it’s SUPER simple - literally all you’re doing is just stacking solid color blocks of shape. its very imprecise despite how sharp everything ends up looking. 

First things first is that you want to decide how you will be handling your edges throughout the duration. Do you want your shapes to be ultra-sharp and precise, or do you want a little bit of a wobblier, grainier edge? Both can look good but it’s VERY much a matter of situational basis. i’ve been favoring looser and grainier shapes so that’s how i’m going to be working on this. 

on the left here, you can see the shapes made with precise rectangular selections and an untextured pen, on the right, freehand drawn shapes and a grittier pen. There’s something immediately pretty different feeling about them. So play around with that first - its not something that’s fun to change halfway through! But lets step back a minute. It helps to work large to small. The two biggest shapes here are these orange chunks and everything gets stacked on top of them so i’m gonna do that first. 

Now, a key feature of what i do: clipping masks. almost all digital art programs have them. What a clipping mask does is it constrains the pixels of a layer to the transparency of the layer below it. Here I have the light orange layer, and then on top of it the buildings and billboard are clipped to the orange. Most of you probably already know this and I’m overexplaining a bit, but there was a time when i didnt know how clipping layers worked and someone had to explain it to me.

now you’ll notice the shapes of the buildings are rough, and sloppy. here’s the fun part: since this is all about stacking shapes, only your exterior edges matter. this all gets filled in. be as sloppy as you want when you’re making your shapes. in fact, the outside edges get trimmed out a bunch to when i do this - i go in and erase them clean. Don’t be too finnicky about drawing perfect and precise! its a waste of time. As long as the silhouette is what you want, the interior can be a nightmare.

Working this way, it’s important to keep your layers stacked in a way you can make sense of. Right now there are four layers here: the background dark orange, the two main orange rectangle shapes, and then the buildings on one layer and a billboard on the other. I rack up a LOT of layers doing this and it makes it annoying in some aspects, but being able to freely recolor any one chunk without losing my detail is a key aspect of this.

So, I block those out

Next, I do the same for the smaller chunks that are still main shapes. There are once again, a lot of layers here. The top layer is the hair - you can see the head showing through it. The head and arm underneath the hair, same layer. Then the cup. Then the light green pieces of paper. Then the dark green ones.

The cup is technically farther forward than the head and arm so you would think it’d go on top, but the point isnt to recreate the foreground and background hierarchy with layers so much as it is to group things in a way i can work with. The cup goes underneath so it can be grouped with all the other objects on the table. 

now, i just go and fill in all the shapes. i forgot to do the blinds but i get them later. you might notice a lot of these shapes are pretty rough, which was harder to notice before they were filled in. Now that I can see better, I go in with an eraser and clean up the edges until they’re the shape I want 

sometimes erasing leaves little bits of ‘noise’ around objects like on this napkin here. i like to keep a little bit of this noise for texture, but if you dont like it make sure to get rid of it! if you’re working very crisp this will stand out a LOT

Next up is to add some detail onto the objects

I flipped the canvas here because the head shape was wrong - the ears were uneven and i wanted to fix it. I want to go about adding detail onto the billboard and buildings. i do all detail with clipping masks - but the objects are clipped to another layer and so nothing can be clipped to them. instead, i unclip them and just erase by selection for the same effect

all of the text on the papers is clipped to the papers below it. the buttons are clipped to the phone. the yellow photos and card are actually another independent layer on top, in case i want to recolor them separately. im indecisive and end up recoloring things a lot. For the most part these objects are starting to become recognizable as more than just shapes

i go in an add the details on the background and character now. theres some more stuff on the table. the lines of the face and ears are on one layer, and the flats of the eyes below that. Here’s what each group of layers is, and what they look like on their own

The background/bottom chunk. Just the table, window, and shirt.

The middle bit. All the stuff on the table and the blinds.

Finally, the top, which is just his head and arm. 

now this stage is the bare bones of the drawing. you can more or less tell everything that’s happening. it reads. but its very much lacking in something - it doesnt have a ton of depth or interest. and adding that additional detailing, the dept and interest, is where stuff starts getting REALLY tricky and subjective. 

im gonna take you to a much simpler scenario to show the sort of options i go through at this stage

ahh its our dear friend, sphere casting shadow. this is, more or less, the kind of image we have. you can tell whats happening but it’s lackluster. there are TONSSS of ways frm here that you can go add interior detail to a shape once it has been established. here are some quick and SUPER rough examples

from top left to bottom right: flat cel shading, softer airbrushed/gradient shading, halftone, and a textured brush. Each of these has their strengths and weaknesses. They can also be combined.

for example, here’s the solid cel shading being used to contain a gradient/airbrushed detail. This image - probably the single oldest piece of my art i still willingly show people - is entirely colored with gradients being contained in cel-shaded chunks. It has a sort of soft, luminous quality but without losing its crispness.

here’s a super quick bust with some variations of stuff going on. obviously this is no masterpiece but you see how different types of detailing can interact with each other and be used to distinguish materials too. 

With the mob psycho comic I did, the detailing that wasnt line was done using a variety of halftones of different shapes layered on top of each other

by contrast parts of my ace attorney comic use a textured brush and have a sort of blended, papery feel

any of them can work for pretty much anything as long as you are using it with intent. practice around. mix styles of finishing together. find a comfort zone. the more you do it the more intuitive it becomes and at the heart of it this process is a very intuitive way of drawing because of how far removed it is from realism.

Now here is the trick - light and shadow.

Everything up to this point has been very flat and adding detail helps but there’s only so much that can accomplish. To get HEAVY light and shadow you need to think about things differently. I think if there’s any part of this process that’s complicated, its this one. 

To truly get the most out of your palette, you need to pick chunks of an image to be in higher/lower light and then either ‘step up’ or ‘step down’ the colors in that chunk. here’s what I mean.

Here’s our ball with a beam of light on it. Everything Within the beam of light is one step in our limited palette lighter than anything outside of it. Here’s how I go about doing this: the shape of the beam of light is below everything else. Then, once I have the shape blocked out, i select it. With that selection in place, i go to EVERY SINGLE LAYER that’s effected, lock the opacity, and recolor that chunk. So what’s going on here is that there is only one more layer - the beam of light, below everything but the background, and the rest of this effect is just caused by every layer above it now being two-toned following the exact same silhouette. THIS is why it’s so important to keep your layers separate - if the shadow and highlight had been painted onto the base directly, i would not be able to do this without significant effort. 

This works with all of the finishing techniques I talked about above

A combination of cel shading and half toning, all stepped up to give the appearance of heavier light on one area.This is also how I go about rendering transparency in this style. All of my layers are fully opaque and I allow the colors to do the work of conveying transparent material

it’s obviously not a very representational way of working, but as long as your audience UNDERSTANDS what you’re trying to convey, then you’re executing it successfully.

So with that, now we’re gonna go and finish this drawing.

For this one, I decide a big central shadow is necessary. In the original thumbnail, he was backlit, which I still plan on doing, and that wouldn’t make sense without casting a shadow.

I’ve had to change the colors of some objects entirely in order to get this to work right. This is what I mean when I call this an intuitive process - some stuff felt weird, so I changed it. This also involves a bit of problem solving. The newspaper is now unable to be separated from his hand. Sometimes changing the color of an object makes that object look better, but ruins its relationship with the objects around it. It’s up to you to learn how to adjust and finagle things until you get it where you want.The paper he has and the napkin underneath it also all blend together now.

The next few parts of this process are REALLY just trial and error, where I toss a bunch of spaghetti at it until it works. It’s hard to decide what to screenshot, because I don’t know what will or will not be part of the finished drawing. To that end, you can watch the recording of this drawing here. This video isn’t edited at all so it contains a couple of minutes of really shitty sketching, and then all of the color thumbnailing work i did in the last post. Actually getting started on these final colors begins around the two minute mark. It is also sideways, I am sorry I don’t know why. 

Now, here you can see where I’ve more or less worked things out. His hand’s not on the cup anymore because my friend pointed out it didnt have an arm attached to it. I added some halftoning to make a gradiating effect in the sky and on the table to give the impression of a sunrise. His eyes are different but as of posting this, I don’t like them and am probably about to go back and change them again. The Cup now has a shadow and some rim lighting. His hand is in shadow. The stain on the napkin is big enough to define the edge of the paper on top of it.

Little things like that. 

The more you draw like this the more the way you need to think about your space becomes natural. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best of luck!

Chapter Two- Coffee At Midnight

The silence between them was thick and full of unspoken questions, Emily’s expression blank and unreadable. JJ wanted to cry again, bottom lip ensnared between her teeth. She looked at Emily with a heartbreakingly sad expression, trying desperately to read her.

After a moment, Emily let out a breathy chuckle, blinking rapidly in shock. She raised her eyebrows, cocking her head as she tried to read JJ’s expression and understand exactly why this was a sad thing.

“I’m...wow, Jayje, that’s amazing!” When JJ’s expression contorted to one of sadness, Emily backtracked. “Or maybe it’s not? You’ve gotta let me in on what’s going on.”

There was another awkward silence, JJ’s eyes downcast, shoulders quaking as she tried her best to will the tears away and force the lump out of her throat. She sighed, stuffing her hands into the pockets of her slacks before shrugging her shoulders.

“Not here, not now.”

“Okay, since wine is off the table… why don’t we go pick up some takeout and go back to mine?”

Emily let her hand rest on the small of JJ’s back, guiding her towards the parking lot. There was no way she would let JJ drive in the emotional state she was in, her face still pinched in a mixture of sadness and anger.

“You really don’t have to drive me.”

Despite her words, JJ didn’t object to Emily opening the passenger door for her. She climbed in, fastening her seatbelt while Emily rounded the car. She flashed JJ a gentle smile - not one of pity or anger like JJ had expected - before starting the car.

“I know.”

Emily kept her tone light, fingers ghosting along the inside of JJ’s wrist like she always did when she was asking to hold her hand. She smiled when JJ turned her palm up, grasping Emily’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.

They remained hand in hand the entire drive, the sky black before they pulled into Emily’s driveway. Her house was much larger than her apartment had been, several bedrooms on a semi-private piece of land. She was content there, with her cat and not knowing her neighbors, a goofy smile on her lips as they walked into the house.

They had settled in, Emily sprawled across the couch while JJ curled up in the chair, boxes of pizza stacked high on the coffee table. JJ had put off talking until they had eaten, Emily promptly ordering their favorite pizza - and enough to feed an army, at that.

“So…” Emily trailed off, taking a moment to swallow before she set her plate on the boxes. “You need to explain.”

“Explain what? I’m pregnant, you know how babies are made.”

“Smart ass.”

Emily rolled her eyes, shooting a pointed look at JJ. Her eyebrow was raised, studying JJ’s face for some sort of response. Unfortunately, they were both profilers and knew how to make their expressions unreadable.

“Okay. Fine.” JJ sighed, rubbing her temples. “So, I called Will and told him that I’m pregnant and he asked me what I’m going to do about it. What I’m going to do, like I’m the only one who participated in getting pregnant!”

A blind rage filled Emily, turning her stomach. She felt her pulse quicken and spots form in her vision - a tell that she was angry, not just upset. Will had been an ass to JJ since they got together a few years back, always making comment on her career and her choices. She really just didn’t like him, and that probably would never change.

“Okay, wow, there’s a lot to unpack there. Did he uh, say anything else?”

JJ shook her head, lips pursed into a fine line. He didn’t - but he said everything he needed to without words. He didn’t want kids - hell, she didn’t know if she even wanted children - but he couldn’t at least comfort her? Make her feel even a little better about the situation?

“Alright, do you think him not saying anything else was a bad thing? Was he just shocked?”

“I mean, it’s not a good thing. We uh, we talked a few weeks ago.” JJ let out another sigh, sounding ragged and tired. “He said kids weren’t on the table for us, because of our jobs. He loves work too much and I… don’t know about me. I love my job and I want to be a mom too, but I don’t know what to do.”

“You don’t need to have every answer right now.” Emily shot JJ a comforting smile, her head leaning back into the plush pillowing of the couch.

They were interrupted by the sharp ring of JJ’s phone - both groaning because they thought they would be called away to another case. JJ picked it up, her face contorting in anger as she let out a long sigh.

“Will.”

Emily sat up, elbows resting on her knees as she listened intently. She studied JJ’s face as it changed - moving from confusion to anger to tears welling up in her eyes in a matter of seconds. Quietly, she made a motion for JJ to explain, head cocked.

“No, Will, I’m not getting an abortion. That’s off the table.”

She felt her heart begin to race at JJ’s words, stomach turning. Emily tried to swallow down the bile rising in her throat, staggering to the bathroom and promptly emptying her stomach into the toilet. She felt the telltale burn of tears spring to her eyes, willing herself to stop for a moment - today was JJ’s day, not hers.

It had been so long since she had allowed herself to think of her own abortion all those years ago, and the feelings of shame and guilt and anguish hit her like a freight train. She sighed shakily, ignoring the niggling voice of guilt in the back of her mind - it was what was best at the time, she knew that in her rational mind - before splashing some water on her face, hands gripping the sink as she stared into the mirror.

The reflection was a face Emily hadn’t seen in years - eyebrows furrowed together, mouth pursed into a thin line. She had tried for years to bury the feelings of shame and anguish, the anxiety she had felt, and all of it was rushing back to her again. But this wasn’t about her - this was JJ’s moment, and whatever she decided would be perfectly fine.

Because she was her best friend. Because JJ was a capable adult. Because JJ was able to make her own choices, and Emily was going to be supportive because she loved her, she wanted nothing more for her than happiness.

She left the bathroom, preparing herself for a fight when she heard JJ still arguing with Will.

“No, that’s not happening. No, I can’t.” JJ was scrubbing her face with the sleeve of the oversized sweatshirt Emily had lent her. “I don’t want to talk about this. I don’t… I can’t think of that.”

When she saw Emily enter, she looked up at her, brows knit together in confusion. A silent question - an ‘are you okay, please talk to me’. Emily shook her head, a not now, maybe later.

“Listen, Will, I don’t really have any other words right now but I don’t know, I can’t tell you I’ll get an abortion…”

Emily felt the familiar bubble of anger rising in her chest again, an anger she hadn’t felt in so long. She was usually so controlled with her emotions, measured out and carefully let out. She didn’t cry, she didn’t yell, but with Will? Will incited a rage in her that no one else ever had.

With a sigh, she held out her hand for JJ’s phone, mouthing for her to hand it over, that she wanted to talk to Will. She took a breath, fingers wrapping around the phone - burying her disgust in the heart emojis beside Will’s name - before putting it to her face.

“I don’t really know you, you’re too much of a ball licker to get to know your girlfriend’s friends, but you need to back the fuck up. You can’t just tell Jayje to get an abortion! It’s not your fucking body!”

“You know what? I don’t think it’s your body either.”

“It’s not! And it’s not my choice. It’s JJ’s choice, and I’ll hold her hand the entire time if that’s what she chooses. And if not? If she wants to keep your baby - god, poor fucking child to have you for a father. If she wants to keep the baby, I’ll hold her hand through that too. Because I’m not you - because I’m not a piece of shit.”

Emily struggled to maintain her composure, eyes filling with tears once again. She pushed them away, heart pounding so loudly from adrenaline and emotion that she could hear it in her ears.

“You sound like an angry person, Emily Prentiss. I hope your life gets a little better soon. Put Jayje back on the phone.”

“No. She’s my best friend and I know her well enough to know she needs space right now. You guys can talk later.”

She let out a huff, breath shaking, as she hung up the phone. Her lower lip trembled when she set the phone down on the table, adrenaline from their short conversation crashing into her as the tears threatened to spill over her eyelids.

“Fuck, he’s such an ass.” Emily breathed out, tears leaking down her face. She hissed out a soft ‘fuck’, trying to laugh breathily to distract from the tears.

“Hey now, he’s not that bad.” JJ offered, soft pout on her face.

JJ looked on, concern etched into her face - Emily never showed emotion, even on the toughest of their cases. JJ wasn’t used to seeing Emily cry, not even after she had been stabbed, shot, or tortured.

“It’s not Will… the abortion thing, it’s personal for me.”

JJ nestled herself into Emily’s side, fingers trailing down the inside of her arm and tickling at her palm, soft smile creeping up on her lips when Emily grasped her hand. They sat in silence for a few moments, JJ’s head leaning on Emily’s shoulder, both teary eyed and trying to regain their composure.

“Are you ready to talk about it? I won’t judge you. I would never judge you.”

“Jayje…” Emily’s voice was soft, a broken ghost of her usual authoritative tone. “I was fifteen. I got pregnant - um, duh, you have to be pregnant to get an abortion. I was kicked out of my church, but he - my best friend, the, um, the dad if there had really been a baby - he held my hand the entire time. He convinced me to go back to church, with my head held high.”

JJ was quiet, letting Emily have her moment to think and speak. She listened to her tone, shaky and carefully measured, taking the time to enunciate every word - a tell that she was trying her best not to cry. JJ squeezed her hand, nodding in encouragement for her to continue.

“And I feel so much still, so much pain and anguish and guilt and fear… Fear of the unknown, wondering what my life would be like if I had kept my baby. The guilt keeps me up at night, sometimes. I’m good at compartmentalizing, at pushing things away and not feeling them, like they happened to someone else and not me.”

JJ felt her heart clench at Emily’s words, so small and soft and far away. She rubbed her head into Emily’s shoulder, a soft smile on her lips when Emily rested her head on JJ’s own. They sat for a moment, JJ listening to Emily softly sniffle, before she took another deep breath.

“I still feel so much, yes, but I want you to know something. God, Jayje, I could never judge you. I will never judge you - if you feel like this is something you need to do, I’m here. I’ll hold your hand the entire time, the entire way, and I’ll take care of you. You’re my best friend and I love you, and I just… sorry I got weird.”

“You didn’t. You couldn’t get weird, because we’re best friends and I’ll see your pain and your hurt and I’ll take some of it to get it off your back for a while.”

JJ rubbed small circles in Emily’s back, lifting her head to turn and properly look at her best friend. Emily looked so wrecked and emotional, makeup tracked down her face, eyes red and swollen.

“I’ll take your pain, and I’ll lessen the load. And I’ll take care of you always, because you’re not alone - you’re never alone when you have me.”

At JJ’s words, Emily let out a hollow sob, hand squeezing tightly to JJ’s. She felt the tears come on stronger now, hunched over and trying her best to swallow her tears and broken cries.

“I keep thinking. I keep thinking about it.” Emily let out a broken sob, free hand coming up to cover her mouth. “I keep thinking about the what if’s, the what could have been’s. I should be over it, I know it.”

“You shouldn’t. You have the right to feel, the right to have your emotions and work through them.”

JJ kept her voice soothing, thumb rubbing the back of Emily’s hand as she just let her cry. She knew that she probably hadn’t allowed herself to cry in a very long time, sobs shaking her small frame. In that moment, she looked so small and fragile - a stark contrast to the badass FBI agent everyone else saw.

They stayed huddled together, hand in hand, until Emily had cried herself out. Her body was shivering, wracked with hiccuping dry sobs, face reddened and damp with the residue of her tears. JJ leaned her head on her shoulder again, dropping a soft kiss to the exposed skin there.

“Are you ready for bed? We don’t have to talk anymore tonight, I know you’ve probably reached your emotional quota for the day.”

“Yeah, uh…” Emily jumped up, wiping at her face with a tissue from the coffee table. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I had cried for that long. Fuck, this is so awkward.”

JJ caught her by the wrist, standing and looking into Emily’s eyes purposefully. She hoped her expression conveyed everything she was feeling - the support, the love, and the pride, so very proud of Emily for coming forward with her secrets and letting her emotions out.

“Hey, stop that. You’re so strong, you put everyone else before you. And yes, you compartmentalize, but you need to learn to let people in. I’m proud of you, you could never be a burden to me.”

There was a moment of silence between them, Emily’s eyes narrowing as she studied JJ’s expression, searching for sincerity. She knew she was sincere, but couldn’t help herself, she needed to know - know that everything was okay between them still, that JJ didn’t judge her.

“Stop, you’re going to make me cry again. I don’t fucking cry.”

“No, you don’t cry, but maybe you should try it sometimes. It’s very cathartic.”

They walked down the hall, Emily stopping at the guest room door as though JJ had never stayed the night at her house before. She made a little motion with her hand, sheepish smile on her face.

“So uh, here’s the guest room… you know that already. Fuck, I’m being stupid.” Emily laughed at herself, a little bit of her usual light and fire returning to her eyes. “Anyways, I’ll be down the hall if you need anything?”

“Yeah, thanks. Good night, Emily, I’m leaving the door open if that’s okay?”

Emily turned, already halfway down the hallway, a soft smile playing on her lips. She nodded, head cocked as she looked at JJ, studied her face and the way she looked without makeup, uninhibited beauty.

“Yeah, Jayje, you can leave the door open. Sleep tight, come find me if you need me?”

She retreated down the hall, climbing into bed and turning her lamp out. Emily slept with her door open - come to think of it, most of the BAU slept with their doors open, that she knew of - turning onto her side and staring at the window across from her bed. It would be another sleepless night, she just knew it, emotions still racing as her brain worked overtime, thinking of all the possibilities - about herself, her would-be child, about JJ, about Will.

A soft knock on the doorframe brought Emily from her thoughts, clicking her lamp on and sitting up in bed to look at JJ. She was leaning against the door, small blanket wrapped around her body, with the most pitiful expression Emily had ever seen.

The sight of the blanket almost made her smile, the one JJ had claimed as her own when she first became friends with Emily. When she offered for JJ to take it home, JJ declined, saying that she would just have to keep coming over to see Sergio the cat and cuddle up with her favorite blanket.

“Trouble sleeping?” Emily almost didn’t recognize her own voice, small and hoarse from the tears. “Me too.”

“Can I sleep with you?”

Wordlessly, Emily laid back down, lifting the blanket for JJ to climb in. She smiled, nearly laughing out loud at the way JJ launched herself into the bed and crawling under the blankets, a pleased smile on her face.

JJ wrapped around her body, hand clutching at Emily’s tee and head resting on her chest. They were both grinning stupidly - the way they always did when they stayed up too late watching horror movies but were too scared to sleep alone.

“Good night, Jayje.”

Emily felt her eyes fluttering shut against her will, nose buried in JJ’s soft hair. She yawned, wrapping and arm around JJ and squeezing gently, finally starting to drift to sleep in JJ’s embrace.

“Night, Em. Thank you for letting me in tonight - you’re the strongest woman I know.”

She tried to fight sleep to respond, but her body felt too heavy with exhaustion, unable to will herself to speak. Emily settled for a soft sigh, one hand threading in JJ’s hair as they both drifted off to sleep.

Rendezvous || Secret Agent Shawn Mendes

A/n: A Spy!Shawn au fanfic Inspired by @fourtristattoos post of Shawn wearing a floral patterned button down! Thank you for the inspo!! ❤

Being one of the most highly regarded spies was never easy. But for Shawn, or, Agent #8, it was his passion. Its what made his heart race and his head rush, and he loved the thrill of it all.

He gets sent on the missions of highest importance; the high risk ones, if you will. Every mission he'd ever been on was a success. Shawn does not take his work lightly, and works diligently and carefully to not make any mistakes. He's a sharp shooter, a smooth talker, and he moves with a masculine elegance that is almost intimidating. Something most other agents in the agency didn't have. Although he knows he is excellent at what he does and has a sense of pride, he remains humble through it all. He never wants to come across as a cocky asshole to anyone, except the criminals and vigilantes he takes down. He uses that side of him to his advantage, to provoke them thus making their next move reckless and lacking reason; making them easier to take down.

He has helped to create scrambling devices that use frequencies hidden in music, to take out any devices that may be able to track him on his missions. Amongst other things hes helped with the innovation of, that was the most affective in helping to get the job done.

His most recent mission was taking out a French jewel thief who somehow managed to steal several ancient gems from an elite museum in France. She tried to hideout in a place she thought no one would find her, but Shawn being as good as he is, found her with a quickness. Finishing a mission that would've taken anyone else 5 days, in 2 days.

Tonight, he was at a rendezvous point at the CN Tower in Toronto he was prompted by his superior, Agent #15, to show up at to recieve the details of his next mission.

Dressed in a nice, sleek black suit with a black bowtie to match, Shawn walked in the door of the party like he owned the place. Greeting those he knew with a firm handshake and making small talk with those he didn't know too well. There were quite a few higher up people there. Not necessarily celebrities, but important people nonetheless.

It didn't take long for Agent #15 to find Shawn and get his attention.

"Shawn, good to see you again." Agent #15 said as he reached his hand out for Shawn to shake.

"You as well, Andrew! I'm guessing theres a new mission at hand?" Shawn said with a hint of excitement in his voice, shaking Andrew's hand. Yes, Andrew Gertler is the Head of the Agency, and most often referred to as Agent #15. Hes the one who coordinates all the missions Shawn goes on. Him and the rest of the members of the Agency, of course.

"Let's not get hasty, Shawn. Well have our chat soon enough. But for now, I think we should enjoy the party. What do you say?"

Shawn nodded in agreement. He was slightly disappointed, he wanted to get the details of his next mission asap. But, hes a patient man. Besides, usually when Andrew does this it means whatever the mission is will be of upmost importance and difficulty; Shawn's favorite kind.

About 2 hours went by, and Andrew got up from the bar stool he was sitting at by Shawn and began walking towards a door that anyone who wasnt paying attention would've easily missed. He put in his password and walked through, looking back at Shawn and beckoning him to come along. Shawn sat his glass of Scotch down, thanked the bartender and headed towards the door.

Andrew sat in a black office chair, positioned behind a sleek cherrywood desk with a few 1-inch thick black folders stamped with the word 'CONFIDENTIAL' sitting on top. Shawn sat across from him, curiosity running rampant in his brain and Andrew could see it in his eyes.

"So, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're extremely excited about this mission?" Andrew started, a smirk on his face.

"Absolutely, sir. I've been ready since the end of the last mission." Shawn said, eagerness and confidence in his voice.

"I'll always admire your gusto, kid," Andrew started. He grabbed one of the folders from the stack on the desk and slid it over to Shawn. "Most young men your age would rather be chasing girls and playing video games. But anyway, i digress. Now, let's talk about your next mission; you'll be heading to Barcelona, Spain. There's a serial thief who goes by the name of Julius Martinez, who's been stealing priceless artifacts from the well off natives in the surrounding areas. We dont know yet if that's his real name or a cover name, but we'll leave that up for you to find out and report to us what you find out. Your mission is to recover and restore those stolen artifacts, take out Julius and his goons and, most importantly, don't get caught"

"Okay, sounds easy enough! When do I leave?"

"6am tomorrow morning, we've already booked your flight. We've also reserved a hotel room for you out there, and we're sending you off with €500,000. You'll be going under the name of Raul Castro, here's your new ID." Andrew said as he handed Shawn a black leather wallet with the letters 'R.C' in the color red embossed onto the front.

"We'll be sending you with a briefcase full of everything you'll need, including weapons and that scrambling device you helped to develop. Amongst other very important and useful things. We have also packed you some clothes to help you blend in. And when needed, as always we'll send you whatever you need when you need it." Andrew finished.

"Thank you," Shawn said, then shook Andrew's hand firmly. "Pleasure doing business with you, Drew."

"Shawn, you know I cant stand that name. Its either you call me Agent #15 or Andrew. Otherwise, I punch you." Andrew said playfully. They both chuckled. Shawn and him have an uncle/nephew type relationship, even though they are in no way blood related. Shawn reminds Andrew of a younger version of himself.

Shawn walked out of the CN Tower that night feeling 10 times more excited than he did before he walked in. He couldn't wait to go back to Spain, he loves it over there. The food is delicious, the views are breathtaking and the women are beautiful.

He walked into his condo that night and took off his suit and tie, getting into his pajamas. He wasnt sure if he'd be able to sleep that night, but he'd try his best. He knows that he doesn't operate well on little to no sleep, and he wanted to do his best and be his best all the time.

what up im jared, im 19 and i never learned how to fuckign read. JK my name is Theo and I super know how to read. Most of the time. Also I’m 22. Anyway I’m one of the more OG members of the Magicians fandom, having been here since back in the early days of early s1. Uhhh I’m nonbinary and hella queer. Metafic is my most favorite thing in the world other than puppies. I cry at least once a day. I have adhd and depression and chronic pain and hella other issues. I’m an anthropology major, in my third year. I’m a slytherin, an illusions discipline, and a pisces.

How long have you been writing for?

Since I learned how, basically, but I only really started posting things online because of the Magicians and also because of Twilight?

What inspired you to start writing for The Magicians?

It’s the BEST and I find it very easy to write from Quentin’s pov which means I actually finish things sometimes lol.

Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write? What it is about them that makes them your favourite?

Quentin, because he is essentially me if I was born as a cisdude except more repressed in terms of sexuality and also more wealthy, which makes him super easy to write and super easy to get ideas about. I also like Penny, because for some reason people think I’m good at writing him?

Do you have a preference for a particular season/point in time to write about?

I write a lot set in the Brakebills years because I like the whole magic school thing and the exploration of magic and interpersonal relationships without having to deal with the Beast or other threats trying to destroy everything they know and love? Like I like that slow burn, spread out, things are happening but they’re happening slowly and also heres some meta about magic kind of exploration that that time gives me the opportunity to do. I think this is partially influenced by that the first book has them in that setting so much longer, and partially because I’m still doing the whole college thing myself and find that easiest to relate to (because no one really wants to read ‘Quentin working two part time jobs and struggling to survive and nothing else happens’ unless it’s just a tiny segment of the fic lmao).

Well, in regards to Magicians fic, I’m still trudging along on chapter two of Magician’s Path - I’m trying to introduce more of Julia’s side of the story as well as working on how to warp the two canons into each other while also making the storyline unique - and also on the next part of crazy/classic/life, my paradise kiss and magicians crossover au. I’m also trying to find the time to record more podfic of my fics, because I think its important to have audiofic available. But nothing new, just continuations.

As for other fandoms, I’m working on a HELLA long reworking of the Descendants universe (hi i love disney channel movies dont judge), and that’s my primary focus right now in terms of fic.

Oh heck, um… probably either all tied up or The Magician’s Path. all tied up was my first time writing PiV smut and also writing shadeless!Julia and I’m just really proud of it? And TMP is like, my baby, my huge multichapter canon reworking that I’m putting so much planning into and I’m always so excited to talk about it. I know it doesn’t seem like much yet but y’all I have so many plans for it and I hope you end up loving it as much as I do.

Many writers have a fic that they are passionate about that doesn’t get the reception from the fandom that they hoped for. Do you have a fic you would like more people to read and appreciate?

TMP for sure - I hope that when I’m done more people give it a try.

What is your writing process like? Do you have any traditions or superstitions that you like to stick to when you’re writing?

Ha my writing process is either ‘has no ideas for months straight and then suddenly idea when I’m supposed to be doing something else but I gotta write this down!!!’ or ‘one sentence every month at most’. Now that the FTB server has gotten bigger, I’ve found some people who will proofread for me, so there’s that editing process afterwards (thanks @oneeyeddestroyer for being the best beta).

I guess my only superstition is that if I’m doing a multichapter or big work I try not to give too much detail out when I talk about it because I get worried that saying about the plot too much will make me lose interest in it.

Do you write while the seasons are airing or do you prefer to wait for hiatus? How does the ongoing development of the canon influence and inspire your writing process?

I do tend to write more when the show is airing, because more people are engaged and it’s something to fill the void between episodes - during hiatus I tend to drift away a bit and focus on other fandoms. This is the first show thats been so all consuming for me, I don’t usually watch things while they air because I tend to forget about remembering to watch them after a week or so? But Magicians keeps pulling me back and keeping me in.

As for ongoing canon developments, it really depends on the thing. If it fits into my plot of it’s a detail I want to put in, I might, but otherwise I’m comfortable lifting what I want from canon and throwing the rest out for a fic - we follow a show with canon multiverses, we can do what we want lmao.

What has been the most challenging fic for you to write?

Honestly, most of my fics? Because I try to improve every time I write and like, explore new things. So whatever I’m working on at the time is the most challenging.

Are there any themes or tropes that you particularly like to explore in your writing?

EVERYONE BEING HAPPY AND NOTHING BAD HAPPENING EVER cough cough I mean, um. I like meta, I like worldbuilding and exploring meta and seeing what I can change. I keep accidentally writing soulmate fics? So that’s a trend I guess.

Are there any writers that inspire your work? Fanfiction or otherwise?

Oh heck, so many dude, I don’t even know, I’m gonna just link you to my bookmarks because that’s the fic I love and probably unconsciously imitate on the often

As for nonfic, like I def want to write like Marisha Pessl or Tamora Pierce or Donna Tartt or Lev Grossman or Mark Z Danielewski but more in his house of leaves phase than his current stuff tbh or Neil Gaiman and also like. Everything that you read or watch or experience makes up how you see the world and how you create what you create and I consume so much stuff I can’t even begin to guess my influences beyond the little tidbits that I keep in my bookmarks or on my shelves.

What are you currently reading? Fanfiction or otherwise?

Currently I’m reading a lot of harry potter fic - the mood is the department of mysteries or other exploration of magic, so things related to that. HP fic is my go to when I’m not revving for any fandom in particular. Nonfic, I’m working my way through Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which is hella fucking good, as well as a bajillion textbooks.

How do I start fan fiction??

Well, that really depends on the topic, but I'll help as much as I can.To start a fanfiction, you first need somewhere to post it (unless its just for friends, in which case.. Just skip the paragraph). I recommend wattpad, though there are other sites, like right here on tumblr, or fanfiction.net.Once you have that (or don't have that, it's completely optional) you have to start the actual story. This part really depends on the characters, so I'll be as vague as possible. Watch a new episode, or rewatch an old one. Take note of all the little habits, catchphrases, tone of voice, and decision making of the characters the fan-fiction is about. Really take the character and shove them into the story. You might even want to try a practice paragraph. The practice paragraph could be taken straight from the original show, or book, or whatever. But make it your own.For example, in Trollhunters (I'll do a scene in the first season so that there are no spoilers) there is a scene where Jim approaches a pile of dead-stone troll with an amulet in it. I'll do the part of him actually walking up, and finding the amulet. (If you want to skip this, then skim through the text that has the ^^ ^^ around it.)^^Jim dropped his helmet to the ground, and cautiously but curiously made his way to the center of the stone-pile that lay before him. "Hey, hey Tobes.. Did you hear that voice?""What voice?"Both boys jumped back as an ominous voice spoke, "JAMES, LAKE.""That! That pile of rocks knows my name!" Jim quickly crawled closer to the tipped-stack of rocks, and he stared at it, just for a moment. Something was calling for him, quite litterally.However, Toby was still doubtful. Nice effect.****You can also describe the setting, and move the shot to the character, though this one is harder to explain, but its exactly as it says. Describe the surroundings, and make a connection to the character.^^The skies were gray, white clouds turning darker. The grass wilted, and trees turned red. The city streets seemed vacant, almost as if nobody had ever been there in the first place. But Jim could see it all.^^ That easy.**Anyways, I hope this helped. I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? Kind of new to this and probably wouldn't have been worth trying to argue it after the fact that I signed off on stuff.So if I use this car for like 3 days I'm in it for like $60 in insurance. Also does anyone know how this buying the tank of gas works? I understood it as if I use so much then I pay there price of $5.60 a gallon. But I got told it was best to just buy the whole tank at $3.30 per gallon(best option seeing as gas is so much these days) And then to return it as close to empty as possible to get my moneys worth.
