Something Fabulous is very very funny, but I honestly just want to take both Tarletons out into a wood and abandon them there. Valentine might have a stick up his ass but to be honest I'd be a lot less restrained if I had to deal with Arabella. I get why he might have the hots for Bonny but good lord no amount of cherubic dick could possibly be worth putting up with a persistent litany of everything that's wrong with you in service of an idiot who doesn't want you in the first place.
Edit: Valentine accidentally hurt Peggy trying to get free of the chair they tied him to and now they've all decided he's a monster, including Valentine himself. He's shamefully allowing himself to be locked in the cellar. Kids, this is straight up abuse apologia. Fuck my OCD, I'm DNFing and deleting it from my Kindle. I expected better of you, Alexis Hall.

"I just really wanted to explore both of those characters and I wanted to do it in a way that I hadn't really seen before, and also just like as a queer person I want to make queer art and that's what I'm drawn and that's what I'm interested in. So I kind of had these two different ideas, it was like one idea was that I would write a book about this rebellious first kid who's like figuring out that they're queer and what does that mean for their like political aspirations; and the other was about you know sort of a member of the royal family under all of this pressure to carry on this legacy and like what does that mean if they're gay. Um-And I'm just like kind of weighing these two different stories and deciding where I wanted to go and then I just kind of had this moment of like What If I didn't have to choose and it was the same story because they fall in love with each other? And-Um-You know in a classic bisexual fashion I was like I'm gonna have both, so I did!"
"It was really important to me that Alex was explicitly bisexual because like, you know, I really wanted the representation of like this bisexual character and then it was important to me that he was also Mexican like he is in the book and that he was played by a Mexican actor. (..) It was really important to me that, um, I didn't want any, I didn't want Alex or Henry, no matter how their stories were translated to the screen, I didn't want either of them to have any type of, um, like shame or resentment towards themselves for being queer, it was really important to me that the stakes of their lives and their like inner conflict was much more based on like the circumstances that they're in. It's like they don't hate themselves for being gay-or for being bi-they just wish that it was easier to be who they were in the world that they live in."
"..Taylor embodies that so beautifully. (..) I think he's just killer in that role. And Nick, I mean, if you like turned me upside down and shook me like he would fall out my brain as Henry (..) doesn't have blue eyes but they sure are sad eyes and that is exactly what they need to be."
"I see myself in Alex, tremendously, I'm very much in Alex, I relate to him so much, uh, truly, I think he's the most like me of all my characters."
"I very much would love screenwriting to become part of what I do, I'll say it that way."

I promise I searched your blog, but how do you (specifically) zero draft? The post that showed up in a search of your blog was like, bullet point writing whatever is in your head for the.wip, which I think is v cool and would help me finish lofm! So I'm curious how you do it!
Oh yes, okay! I don't think I've actually explained it anywhere, but I love talking about this.
what is a zero draft?
The great thing about a zero draft is that you can pretty much make it whatever you need it to be. For me, I was having a hard time with the middle of my story. I've started and stopped this wip so many times, always getting hung up at the same part as I approach the middle. I've always had a very clear picture of the beginning and the end, but never how to get all the way through from point A to point B. My original outline had things in brackets like [character growth] and [plot stuff], but what does that mean!?
My goal was to get all the way through. So I opened a blank document, started at the beginning, and literally rambled and talked my way through the entire story. I didn't write real prose. It was all stream of consciousness. It was me describing what happens in the story as if I was telling it to a friend. The zero draft was my rubber duck. This was my brainstorming document. I used common vernacular and slang and abbreviations. There are bullet points, numbered lists, sidebars where I rambled about a scene I completely forgot to mention in a previous section. Lots of comments about things I need to include in the next draft. Literally anything and everything I thought of went into the zero draft.
A zero draft can be as long or short as you need it to be. Mine ended up being around 40k words. But I've seen other people say a zero draft is 10k to 20k words. It's really up to you! And when you feel like you've covered enough of the story to move on to the next draft.
And you don't have to go about a zero draft the way I did! Recently, an author I love and follow on instagram (Casey McQuiston) shared in their stories that when they were writing their most recent book, they zero drafted each chapter before they wrote it out. Casey said that because of this, it was first time they didn't have major edits and rewrites afterwards. So if you find yourself needing a little more structure and sense of where you're going, I think a zero draft could be super helpful!
Of course you don't have to have a zero draft, and if you've got a good sense of the plot and character arcs, you might not need one. But it can be a great way to brainstorm and figure out those things if you need to!

Hello hello! I absolutely adore your writing, it just feels so complex and the dialogue is so perfect you don't understand, probably my favorite writer in tumblr ^^
Do you have any favorite books? I'm not really into reading but I want to write my own stories, and English isn't my first language so I always try to read but I don't really continue since most of them aren't really in my taste– but I'm willing to try anything you read or take inspiration from since I'll probably like it since I like your work so much :]
Sorry, hope that made sense, ty <3
So, I'd like to think that while my writing has a consistent *vibe* it also covers quite a few different genres and moods that could be what you are interested in. Let's go.
If you like a book rooted in complex, dysfunctional power dynamics try....Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo, The Last Tale of The Flower Bride by Roshani Chokski, The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E Schwab, Gone Girl or Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, Deathless by Catherynne M Valente, If We Were Villains by M.L Rio, The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakovic, Dark Rise by C.S Pascat, Interview with a vampire by Anne Rice, These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever.
(You can see that complex, dysfunctional power dynamics that are central to the story are basically my favourite thing haha. My absolute jam and butter! The dynamics themselves vary. You may root for some and watch others in delighted horror.)
If you like a great, not a romcom, enemies to lovers romantasy, try...Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson, Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust, The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black.
For some fantasy horror vibes, try...Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant (mermaids!), House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland, The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher.
If you want something cute and LGBTQ, try...The House on Cerulean Sea or In the Lives of Puppets by T.J Klune, One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, Carry on by Rainbow Rowell, anything by F.T Lukens.
For short story collections that make me want to write...Things We Say in the Dark by Kirsty Logan, Salt Slow by Julia Armfield, Through The Woods by Emily Carrol or the multi-author anthology Hag.
And, let's be real, absolutely no one is following me for worldbuilding, but...
For worldbuilding that has stayed with me, try...The Wayward Children series (all stories semi-standalone) by Seanan McGuire, The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
I know I haven't done superheroes. I just...?? I liked Hench by Natalie Zina Walschotts, but honestly most of them just don't interest me. Sorry.

Pop Culture References in Writing
This is not an advice post as much as an opinion + opening to discussion. I’m really curious what you guys think about this!
Every now and then I come across a book with lots of pop culture references. I think the last I read was “One Last Stop” by Casey McQuiston.
I intentionally don’t include any pop culture references in my writing—including more niche or time-specific slang, and I have a few reasons:
I feel pandered to when I read it. I haven’t yet read pop culture references (or even watched it in media) that didn’t immediately take me out of the story. When it’s done poorly, it’s—dare I say cringe in our year 2024? It’s a bit hard to watch, let’s say.
Even when it’s done well, I imagine the author is like that man holding a skateboard, “how do you do, fellow kids?” It never lands genuinely for me.
It adds a time limit on the work. Memes, jokes, and slang of the cultural moment are just that—of the moment. I find things die far too quickly so by the time I’m consuming the media the reference is old or dead completely. Or, at the very best, I’ve heard/seen it so much that I’m tired of it.
Last reason, I consume fiction to be somewhat out of my own world. The inclusion of pop culture references takes me right back to reality and breaks the escapism and immersion of the story. It’s the same as when media references COVID or something similar—I want to be in a fictionalized world, I’d like to escape this one for a little while.
(as an aside, I am totally fine with these references in children's media, because I assume children find it really funny and cool that their interests are in their media. I just watched a Bluey episode (don't make fun of me) where the girls teach their grandparents how to floss (as in the dance) and while I as an adult didn't enjoy it personally, I also know it wasn't written for me, and I'm sure the kids that watched it loved it.)
Your turn! What’s your thoughts on this? Do you like pop culture references? Do you write them?

BTS of #RWRBMovie: Stephen Fry as King James III
ML via Tatler:
The character was originally supposed to be a queen – ‘Queen Mary’ is the head of the family in McQuiston’s book – yet none of the grand dames were interested when casting calls went out. 'I think, at that stage of Her Majesty’s life, none of the Dame Judi Denches, Helen Mirrens and Julie Andrewses of the world wanted to do something like that,’ says López. Fry, however, jumped at the chance. 'He said yes right away,’ says López, pausing to laugh. 'Of course, he is friends with His Majesty. I never asked him what he thought the King might think of Stephen playing a fictional British king.’ Perhaps Fry’s friendship with the monarch is why he was so well-versed in decorum and royal protocol. 'He didn’t even have to be told,’ says López. 'He just rattled it off. He was like, “Can I say this instead, Matthew?” I was like, “Yes, fine, you’re Stephen Fry, you can do whatever you want.”
ML via What to Watch:
I think there’s a point at which, once a project starts to actually get some forward momentum, then it starts to become a lot easier to convince people to be in the movie, and by the time we got Uma, I was like ‘great, who else wants to join the fun wagon?!’ Stephen took no convincing whatsoever, that was such a happy thing for me, because I thought ‘well, there’s a very slim chance he’s going to say yes to this’, you know, I’m sure he’s busy, I’m sure he’s not going to want to do it, it’s too perfect, and then he said yes straight away, and I felt so happy.“
ML via OutSFL:
I’ve always been such a fan of his [Stephen Fry] and really admired him greatly. We had had some sort of communication through other people over the years because he had seen “The Inheritance” in London. He got word to me, through our producers, how much he loved it. I had been working at one point on another film that I thought I was going to make, and when he found out that I was working on it, he was like. “I’d really love to be a small part in it if you have anything.” But I never talked to him and never met him. When this role came around [laughs], we thought, “Let’s see if he really means what he says!” He jumped at it! It didn’t take long at all for him to say, “Yes.” That was fun. Just to watch him and work with him is just a great thrill and a pleasure. It was for everybody. Everybody was really excited the day that he came on set.
ML via TV Times:
'It was really important to create a lot of daylight between the fictional royal family in the movie and the actual royals - they aren’t the Windsors, ours are completely made up,’ says Matthew, 46. 'But when Stephen walked on set in that double-breasted suit, I think everyone in the cast and crew stood to attention!’

The song of Achilles by Matthew López
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Red, White and Royal Blue was like the summer coming to an end, the leftovers of the hot temperature leaving behind the harsh and dominant side of summer, to find new colors and chill breezes of autumn;
Tumblr media
The Song of Achilles would be spring: warm, soft. Life beginning to grow into beautiful flowers and fruits. It would be refreshing and filled with vibrant energy mixed with the smell of pouring rain that characterize the cloudy days.

i'm thinking about how casey mcquiston wrote rwrb as a way to cope with tr*mp bring elected and how that resonated with so many queer people and how popular that book got at the height of the pandemic when we really needed a book like that to make us laugh and imagine a world where 2020 wasn't.. Like That. and in that one way things have changed, in terms of the popularity of rwrb allowing publishers to see that queer romance is worth publishing and that queer people deserve happy endings too and how noticeable the change in romance is from 2019 to today. casey really did make history with that book; do you understand? they changed everything with that book.

Subway Lovers | JAKE SIM X BLK READER
Summary: you were only a stranger on a train that jake had loved in between.
Drabble
A/N: This piece is based on something I read in a book called One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston [You lock eyes with someone ,you imagine a life from one stop to the next and you go back to your day as if the person you loved in between doesn't exist anywhere but on the train]
This is my first time writing a ENHYPEN fanfic so yeah I just wanted to try since I thought this piece fitted him. 🥺
This is not edited ❌❌❌
Tumblr media
That's all it took was a few minutes for Jake to fall in love with you. A complete stranger on the subway sitting across from him.
You and him took the same commute, at the same time, every day. Fate. Jake would call it. But he's fallen in love with so many people on this same subway before, people he never saw again but still wonders how they were doing or if they had something to eat for the day and not just their overpriced iced coffee that they called a meal. Now his life was with you.
And Jake saw you dancing barefoot around his living room in nothing but his T-shirt, singing along to a Patti LaBelle song that you liked since you were seven.
And on the weekends Jake eat Pad Thai with you in your small studio apartment that you couldn't really afford rent for but you somehow, always made the payments to your landlord, who was a heavy chain-smoker so your apartment smells of Newports because the landlord was also the maintenance man who needed to smoke anytime he fixed anything.
And Jake likes to think about the inside jokes you two share, the ones your friends and his never get.
And Jake reads your favorite book. The one you lent him, with the worn out cover that's barely hanging on for dear life. Pages where annotated, and Jake made a few of his own, and leaving smaller comments in places you had wrote something about what you thought of that scene, or a certain character or the way the author did a thing with words that made you feel nostalgic and longed for something you didn't know you lost.
And Jake would never shy a way from telling you how pretty your eyes are. How he saw a million versions of you just behind the subtle color of them. And he would wonder what he looked like in your eyes.
But He's a stranger. You're a stranger. Just two strangers going your separate ways when the train stops. So did his life with you.

suddenly i see (how much you mean to me)
by bayleafs “Hi,” Alex says, stepping into the apartment. He could see his roommate at the window, his back towards Alex as he struggled with his bags. “I’m Alex. I’m your new roommate. I…sorry, I know they said this was a last minute thing. My old roommate asked for a switch. I was too messy, apparently. Too noisy.” He listed off the things that he had heard from the housing officer, not once looking up. He was too busy carrying his things into the apartment. “I know you didn’t want a roommate. I…I promise I will try and be tidy, and quiet. You’ll hardly see me. I…I mean, if you really don’t like me, I can look for my own place, y’know. Privately. And I can leave you-“ “Alex?” Is all he hears. It’s a cry. It’s not just a word. Alex’s head quickly shoots up, looking over at the other man. His eyes flicker over him, and Alex isn’t sure if he’s still breathing. “Henry,” Alex breathes, placing the box in his arms back down on the floor. “What are…I…fuck,” he sighs, quickly covering his eyes with his hand, his thumb and middle finger rubbing at his temple.
