What is HTML? When and by whom was HTML created?

HTML  is a markup language that defines the structure of web pages. HTML is one of the basic building blocks of every website . For this reason, it is among the first details that web developers will want to learn. 

While HTML is an important building block, it is not enough to make a web page look good. It  must be supported by CSS  and  JavaScript  . HTML is essentially code and is used to structure the content of a web page. 

The content on the web page can consist of a number of different paragraphs, images and tables. It is possible to format them with HTML. In this way, the web browser knows how to configure the web page that a person visits and displays it in the direction desired by the developer.

What is HTML and when was it invented?

HTML or  hypertext markup language is a markup language developed for displaying materials or data on the internet. Each material has a known buyer location,  called a web page  . Web pages contain hypertext links that allow the fetching of related pages.

HTML is the markup language used to code web pages. HTML  was designed by  British scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1980 . HTML markup tags  contain document elements such as headings, paragraphs, and tables. Once formatted, they can be viewed by programs or applications known as web browsers.

When viewing a web page, web browsers interpret it according to permitted technology. Thus, items such as headings, paragraphs, and tables are presented adapted to the screen size and font used. HTML documents also contain anchor links, called links to other web pages.

What is Semantic HTML?

Semantic HTML is the conveying of literal meanings for the uses of HTML tags. Semantic HTML was used effectively throughout most of the 90’s and  became an important part of the standard HTML structure . Since the late 90’s,  CSS has become more important in web pages when it has been used effectively .

Semantic HTML 

It consists of tags such as , ,,, and . One of the most important reasons to use semantic HTML tags is that web crawlers can easily index the web page. In this direction, it is possible to improve the web page in terms of SEO . Also, semantic HTML is important for accessing web pages from screen readers.

What are HTML Versions?

After HTML was designed, it has developed in many different forms over the years. For this reason, the HTML versions that are used effectively have changed from time to time. There are five different versions of HTML that are used effectively. Each of them made extra contributions to the HTML structure, making it easier for the developers to use it.

HTML 1.0: It is the first version developed for HTML. It was published in 1991 and was used effectively until 1995.

HTML 2.0: Version released in 1995. It has been accepted as the standard version in web design. Added support for features such as text boxes and buttons.

HTML 3.2: Published by the W3C in 1997. It provided extra support in terms of table creation and form elements. It is considered the official standard since 1997.

HTML 4.01: Released in 1999. It is the stable language for the HTML language and is considered the official standard. It has added CSS support to the HTML language.

HTML5: It is the newest version of the HTML language and was announced in 2008. This version  is developed by W3C and  WHATWG .

What’s the Difference Between HTML Tags, Elements, and Attributes?

HTML tags , HTML elements, and HTML attributes are often confused and used interchangeably when defining. However, there are differences between these three elements. Each  HTML tag has its own unique meaning. HTML elements are used to describe content. HTML attributes provide additional information for existing HTML elements.

What are HTML Tags?

HTML defines the formatting of a particular web page. For this reason, the text, images and other content on the page should be displayed in a shaped way. For example, you may want some text to be uppercase, lowercase, bold, or italic. To do this,  you need to use HTML tags .

HTML tags are like keywords that define how the web browser will display the content. When a web browser reads a document containing HTML, it reads it from top to bottom and from left to right. Thanks to HTML tags, a web browser can distinguish between HTML content and simple content. Each HTML tag can have different properties.

What are HTML Elements?

HTML  consists of three elements , opening tag, content and  closing tag . Some elements are used as empty. HTML elements are often confused with HTML tags. However, an element consists of a combination of three different elements. All HTML files are made up of elements. These elements are responsible for creating web pages. They also describe the content on the web page.

Theoretically, the opening tag, content, and closing tag should go together. Some elements may not have content and closing tags. Such elements  are called empty elements or self- closing elements  . For example, a line spacer  and a straight long line.

What are HTML Attributes?

HTML attributes are placed in the opening tag, and they  range from the “style” to  the “id” description. HTML attributes help convey more information about an element. In addition, these attributes ensure that needs such as styling elements on the web page with JavaScript are met.

While HTML attributes provide additional information about elements, they are modifiers of the HTML element. Each element defines the behavior of the element to which it is attached. HTML attributes must always be applied with the start tag. Although the names to be given to HTML attributes are case sensitive, standard usage consists of lowercase letters.

Have you ever considered trying Ink/Inky from inklestudios for your games? It's was designed as middle-ware software meant for injecting into other games but as a coding (technically it's markup) language it's rather similar to ChoiceScript in ease of use/learning but with the versatility of Twine (since it exports into a html file and is compatible with Javascript + CSS) and can do choice-based interactive fiction pretty well (with an in-built save system like Twine or Ren'py to boot). The documentation for it is also fairly thorough too. Plus unlike ChoiceScript it has a open-sourced MIT license that allows for independent creators to create commercial games without needing to pay for a license to use it.

Though, it still suffers in the same category as Twine/Ren'py as opposed to ChoiceScript (not having a ready-to-go market to cater to) since it'll still fall under the self-publishing umbrella but I wanted to mention it for anyone who doesn't want to use ChoiceScript but may still be struggling with learning Twine. Especially since I don't think Ink/Inky gets much love despite it also being an excellent choice for choice-based IF (though I think that's more because it flies under the radar most of the time).

Ink or Inkle didn't used to have a downloadable IDE. Working entirely on a browser is not an option for me, because I'm a millennial, and I don't trust browsers not to do strange and sinister things.

And you shouldn't either. Browsers are dangerous places. Don't trust them.

I've heard rumours that Ink may have an app or IDE now. If so, that makes Ink a much more viable option for interactive game development. However, I haven't tried it, so I really can't say much more than that.

Teens on Tumblr

In the early 2010′s, Tumblr was a popular microblogging platform among young teens, especially teenage girls. It is different from many other social media platforms because it follows the format of blogs, however, the range of the type of media posted is a lot wider. Through the site, one can access many posts made by other blogs without having to do outside searches. With so many different types of posts, people are able to curate their blogs to fit a certain side of the site by tagging their posts and making it easier for them to be found by their targeted audience.

One side of Tumblr that received a lot of attention by young girls, including myself, in the 2010′s is ED Tumblr, short for “Eating Disorder Tumblr,” which supported and promoted eating disorders. I first accessed Tumblr when I was in middle school, around the age of thirteen or fourteen when I was most impressionable by things that I saw. At the time, I thought the posts being shared on this side of Tumblr were normal and healthy, because of how normalized sharing such dangerous posts were at the time. I would “reblog” unhealthy posts and spread them even further. It allowed for young teens to adopt unhealthy habits they saw online because they thought it was normal. This is one of the negative effects of “participatory culture,” which allows consumers to also participate in the media being created as discussed by Jenkins in “Worship at the Altar of Convergence.” Users on Tumblr are able to see one post and either make their own version of it or reshare the post to their own followers.  

What makes Tumblr different from other blogging sites is that it gives users the ability to post in a variety of formats while still maintaining the aesthetic and format of a traditional blog. In a way, it can be seen as a form of convergence of social networks and traditional blogging. Some of the ways in which users on Tumblr are able to share and create posts is through regular text posts, photos, audio files, videos, or even posting questions in which anonymous users visit their blogs to ask. It also makes access easier to younger generations because it does not require knowledge creation of professional blogs, like HTML coding or programming. They simply edit their blogs through the website, share any type of post they wish to, and add taqs so that it reaches a certain audience. In some instances, users began to use tags to share messages they don’t necessarily want in their caption. Below is an example of what some of the tags might look like, specifically in ED Tumblr.

The most popular tag on this side of Tumblr is “thinspo,” which is short for “thin inspiration.” The post usually includes body checks, or images of ideally “perfect” bodies that can be dangerous for young teens, especially if their bodies do not look like the ones in the images. I have also reblogged some of the posts that have gained popularity by ED Tumblr onto this blog and can be seen under this post. Some of the posts are tips and tricks for people to continue and keep up with dangerous eating habits. Within their blog posts are also messages that are misinformed and spread negativity like the one below.

Though there are less people on this side of Tumblr today, the effects of such a culture are still prevalent today. Blog posts from during this time are usually never deleted and people are still able to search tags like “pro-ana” or “thinspo” to find the same posts I looked at when I was in middle school. With the posts still being shared and left on Tumblr, it makes it easy for the community to grow again and spread to other, more popular platforms today.

3, 13, and 15 for Kint?

oh!! I cannot describe how much time I've spent just pouring through Kint again after receiving this ask, especially to answer the first number and like, now I’ve had to be like, oh no this is actually pretty good and holds up a lot better than i remembered oh no. (oh no) 3. What's your favorite line of narration? This is a difficult question!!! This is an insanely difficult question and I've been rereading Kint trying to see if anything jumped out at me but this also made me realize that I really did not do some of the really big "go big or go home" lines of narration like I've done recently in Lingua Franca. I think my favorite one-off choice has to be the use of very basic file management/html functions littered into chapters with Nick POV, especially the use of (C:\functions\automated\non-essential\stimuli responses\scanned\inhale.exe) in chap 3. in terms of very purposeful narration choices, I adore chapter 8. Specifically, I adore chapter 8 because it combines a lot of ideas on how horror reflects the anxieties of a person's time and along that line how people in the commonwealth would probably find comparisons to machines/synths really discomforting because of the synth panic. So in this chapter you get two characters sizing up the other for threats/danger and both use totally different language/metaphors to describe the perceived danger. Shep would use pretty standard descriptions of comparing Hancock to that of an apex predator, which is a pretty common analogy in books i feel. Meanwhile, Hancock's like, this chick has machine vibes. I remember putting a lot of thought into the craft of that chapter and god i still love it to pieces.

13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

I have playlists for each character or for a fic overall usually! For Kint I had character specific playlists and for anyone who uses spotify you can listen to them here:

For each playlist I kinda like to have a “core“ of songs/genres to build my tone for the character. For Shep its a lot of songs about being a loner and also just fem singers talking about committing crimes? My theme song for her is The Mission “M is for Milla Mix” by Puscifer Nick is a lot of songs on the themes of past lives, ghosts, dissociation/numbness, and songs that give off a certain film nior feel. My theme song for him is Cardiac Arrest by The Bad Suns or Flashed Junk Mind by Milky Chance For Hancock is Viva la Revolutionary vibes and general uh “my life is a dumpster fire/here for a good time not a long time” vibes. Lots of twenty one pilots and Panic! at the disco for this guy. My theme song for him would probably be Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene by Hozier or Arrows by Fences and like... Macklamore lmao.

15. What did you learn from writing this fic?

The biggest take away from Kint so far has been Space. Out. Your. Fics.

If i can find my notes, i think i have uh. 80? chapters of Kint outlined. I theoretically could divide that into 5 main stories but the way ive set it up it works best as one giant fic. thats insane. ive ready 60+ chap fics before, i dont think i want to really write one lmao. I guess I’m going to in order to write this story out all the way?? I have the epilogue written lmao. In comparison, fics i’ve written since Kint have been much more planned out to have natural ending points if its a long story so it could be broken into multiple fics. I think a lot of this was from the fact that in 2016? when i started Kint i was reading a lot more long fics that had 100+ chapters and that was kind of the trend with a lot of fandoms back then? and recently I’ve read many more fantastic series that utilize multiple fics to tell a really complex story (the first two that jump to mind are Wind_Ryder’s Methuselah's Children for The Old Guard and StudioRat’s Branches and Fate for Legend of Zelda. The second take away, on a positive balancing note, is have fun with the actual craft/physical aspect of writing! Use pseudocode for a robot character, play with how you write character voice and narration! there are no real rules on what you can do with the craft of writing and this fic was my gateway to realizing that, quickly followed by reading Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves. Final thoughts- Thanks for the ask. I’ve already messaged you on this but uh. this may have awakened something in me. I might write for Kint again? I guess? Especially now that I’ve reread it and am listening to the baller playlists i made for the characters? If you want to talk more and exponentially increase chances of future writing feel free to message or like ask more questions or just talk about FO4?

Aspects of the Early Web I'd Like to See Come Back – Speckyboy

The early web (we’ll define it as 1995 – 2005) was an adventurous place. The narrative was that anyone could participate in this new medium. Thus, it attracted an eclectic mix of creators.

We tend to look back to these days with some cringe. Yes, the design and technology of that era were lacking. And there were very few standards to speak of. But there were also plenty of positives.

I’m biased – my web design journey began in this era. Therefore, I have a lot of nostalgia. I’ve written about it a time or 10.

But there are things I miss about those days. Practices and ideas that defined the enthusiasm of the time. Things that have long since faded.

As such, here are some parts of the early web I’d like to see come back – even if only for a day!

The Absence of Big Data

So-called big data wasn’t prevalent in the 90s. Google would plant those seeds in the decade. However, the web was yet to be controlled by trackers and algorithms.

Perhaps we didn’t have the same level of personalization. So what? The side benefit was a lack of manipulation.

We still saw this in the early days of Facebook and Twitter. Remember when your feeds were all in real time? It provided a sense of witnessing things as they happened.

Early search engines had similar perks. You were likely served the same results as someone on the other side of the world. Less convenient? Sure. But also less intrusive.

What we see now is ultimately controlled by companies. We don’t necessarily see the best search results. We see whatever Google’s algorithm deems appropriate.

Social media companies make it harder to view your feeds in chronological order. And advertisements are a little too personal, in my opinion.

It’s easy to understand why things have changed. Manipulating users is a profitable business. Plus, advertisers want to target specific audiences.

Still, I miss the days when the web had more randomness. Stumbling upon something new seems like a lost art.

The Simplicity of Website Design & Structure

“Things were simpler back then.” That’s a common refrain when adults talk about their childhood. I think it also applies to web design and structure.

There’s a good reason for that simplicity. HTML was basic. CSS didn’t even exist for part of this time. And there was only so much we could do with the day’s technology.

I can’t deny the prevalence of poor design. Web design was new. We were all amateurs in a sense. I played a role in making the place a bit unruly!

Even so, the limitations were often a good thing. The dangers of overcomplicating things became apparent. Designers eventually learned that simplicity was better for everyone.

On the other hand, we had very few standards or best practices. Things like performance, security, and accessibility received little consideration.

Today, we tend to overcomplicate things as a default. We use heavy content management systems (CMS) for brochure sites. We make a mess of security. And we use DIY tools without much thought about portability or ownership.

Perhaps the good parts of modern design can stay. But how about a resurgence of simplicity?

The Impact of the Solo Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship is still possible on the web. It’s the idea that an individual can make an impact with their creativity. That could be a product, service, or even great content.

I think it has become harder for individuals to succeed, though. There are too many mountains to climb.

Those algorithms make it harder to gain visibility. And there are so many people (and bots) competing for attention.

Not to say it was easy back in the day. But originality tended to shine through. Oddities like the Million Dollar Homepage are a prime example.

Early bloggers also had an opportunity to find a core audience. They built niche online communities dedicated to a shared interest.

Tools like WordPress make it easier to self-publish content. But reaching people has become a full-time job. Creators must often rely on sponsors and product placement to gain traction.

It used to be possible for content to spread organically. Search engines weren’t prioritizing big sites over small ones. Thus, anyone had a shot to be seen by potential followers.

What started as a side gig could turn into something more. That’s still possible in theory.

YouTube and TikTok are the flavors of the minute for this. But they are walled gardens. Doing something similar on an open platform is daunting.

The Freedom to Create and Connect

I love to think of the early web as uncharted territory. We couldn’t look to the past when populating this new medium. So, we made it up as we went along.

There were positives and negatives about this. Even then, some used the web for nefarious purposes. But they seemed like dark corners that were avoidable.

The bigger picture was all about freedom. Anyone could create and publish content. And the web would be a vehicle to make positive connections with others.

There was talk of the great potential it held for society. People without a voice suddenly gained one.

The biggest impediment at the time was access to technology. But that could be resolved through cheaper devices and widespread internet. The sky was the limit.

I believed in the web as a change agent. And that the world would be better for these newfound connections.

We haven’t quite gotten there. Repressive regimes have stifled free speech. Bot farms spread misinformation and create division. Large corporations make the rules with little oversight.

The web didn’t become a whole new world. It instead became a reflection of the one we already had.

Say it isn’t so, Tim Berners-Lee.

Letting the Past Guide Us

Here’s the good news: We now have a past era to look to. We can use it as a guide when building the web’s future.

I don’t expect Google, Facebook, or Twitter/X to change their ways. Not without the mandate of a governing body. But we also don’t have to follow their lead.

Those of us who build and publish can keep the ideals of the early web alive. Think of them as small pockets of resistance.

How do we do it? We can start by embracing open tools and platforms. Use a browser that focuses on user privacy. Publish with a CMS that gives you ownership. Support decentralized systems like the Fediverse.

Most of all, pass these lessons to the next generation. They haven’t experienced a truly open web. Show them why it’s worth having.

Perhaps the web was bound to be changed for the worse. But we can still use our little corner of it as a beacon of light.

Hemp products are everywhere! Every year propane bar-b-q grills are sold. We fill up our cars with gasoline in order to drive. When we need paint thinners to clean up with, we purchase it at the local hardware store. These are items that can be sold to anyone of any age. They are examples are items that can be replaced by using hemp products.

People can die from a caffeine overdose yet they buy it as a powder in a jar. It’s in our coffees, chocolates and many other products. Today’s energy drinks are supercharged with it. The death of an eighteen year old Ohio teen from caffeine toxicity shows it can happen to a person of any age. People also die and suffer every year from food allergies. A perfect example of this is peanuts. A product that many drinking establishments serve for free to their customers. If you do an online search you will find that humans can be poisoned by vegetables such as tomatoes and potatoes. Eating hemp products makes you healthier with no fear of death.

When we have a cold, many people head to your local drug store. The aspirins and cough medications on the counter are also deadly. Many people have died accidentally or on purpose through the over consumption of these medications. These are just a few examples of things that many people use every day without a thought. Global governments tell us cannabis is illegal because it’s dangerous. Their main concern is the slim chance it may cause a mental illness. If we can use products that are more dangerous than hemp products. why can’t we educated people on how to use cannabis safely?
