After the obligatory annual rewatch of Pride and Prejudice my father asked me: "Why does Lizzy tell Mr Darcy that his hands are cold after he confesses his love to her again?"

And I didn't know how to answer that - UNTIL. I. REALISED.

WILD GUESS, but if I recall correctly from my limited experience of 21 years on planet earth, your hands get cold when you are anxious about something or nervous or what not (excluding the cases of external temperature change or sickness, we are talking pure emotions here).

Now watch this:

Throughout the movie there are 3 deliberate closeups on Darcy's hands before the climax, all of which occur in immediate proximity to Lizzy. And I cannot help but notice, without wanting connect one with the other right on the nose...

...look at his hands! He is SO. NERVOUS. around her it makes me wanna scream and giggle and cry-

Now, I hope it is not too bold of me to assume, but...

abby, on the other hand, is very serious about her period dramas. knows more about the fashion trends of the regency era than most costume designers in the industry and she'll tell you all about it!! but truly deep down it's not about the aesthetic, she's just a romance girl <3 you know she's overdue for a pride and prejudice rewatch when she starts writing you letters and unironically calling you "mrs. anderson" (you are not married). she can get into romcoms and more modern romances sometimes, but they're simply not the same!! she does love moonstruck, mamma mia and 13 going on 30 though. but who doesn't?

and yes you are absolutely correct about the shiv and abby parallels. cunty and blonde!!! and abby would absolutely rock a bob in the same way that shiv would rock a long braid. and abby could pull off corporate hot just like shiv could pull off apocalypse hot. and they would both be fixed by a little lesbian sex :)

"As you can probably imagine, this time I didn't mind so much that the music refused to be turned off. The sonic released me and let me get control over my own feet again, but I could hear it flying around the room and zipping in and out of earshot. I may have done some quite embarrassing dancing with it as I turned the engines on, and the screens and the controls burst into life.

   "Then I had a look out the window and realised the ship was exactly where I left it. In 1813."

   Rogue looked straight at the Doctor to get his point across. Going by the Doctor's eyebrows, which shot suddenly upwards, the implication seemed to have been clear.

   "Oh my god, we completely forgot to move it. It's just been sitting there in the middle of that garden. See this is the problem with cloaking." The Doctor lightly hit Rogue's arm with the back of his hand. "Out of sight out of mind!"

   "How often do entire spaceships slip your mind?" Rogue laughed.

   "Hey, I was a mess, okay?" the Doctor said, holding his hand up in the air in front of him. "Wasn't I, Ruby?"

   "Oh, he was all over the place. Reverting to all sorts of bad coping mechanisms," said Ruby.

   "Aw, that's sweet," said Rogue.

   "Yeah, well, I was never going to remember an invisible ship in that sort of a state," said the Doctor. His feigned indignance was so funny, so adorable. Rogue hadn't properly laughed since that very night, the night he met the Doctor.

   "So anyway, I had figured out neither of you were from 1813, but I wasn't sure when I was aiming for. I'd heard Ruby mention something called 'Bridgerton' though, so I had a look through the ship's interdimensional streaming service for a TV show or a film or a book of that name. The resemblance to the party was uncanny, if that's what the Chuldur were aiming for. I watched a couple of episodes while I relaxed and got used to travelling the stars again. Then I rewatched 1995 Pride and Prejudice because why not."

   "Time travelling Netflix, very nice," said the Doctor.

   "So that got me to the twenty-first century," said Rogue. "Then I just sort of… looked for trouble. I figured either you'd be somewhere causing chaos or putting a stop to it."

   "Aw that's how Donna did it! Love Donna," said the Doctor. "She found me by spotting a dodgy, unexplained pill that popped up on the market. She got involved and snooped around the company because she knew I'd be curious about it too."

   "Donna's Rose's mum, right?" said Ruby.

   "Yep. You think you're legendary, Ruby Sunday? Remind me to tell you about the Legend of Donna Noble, Runaway Bride, Best Temp in Chiswick, Metacrisis Doctor-Donna, Mother Protector of Rose," said the Doctor. He smiled and whipped his head from side to side as if he was basking in sunlight.

   "Who's Rose?" said Rogue.

   "My niece," said the Doctor. "Sort of. Well, she's definitely a niece, the question is whether I count as the uncle."

   "What?" said Rogue.

   "Long story," said the Doctor.

   "Ooookay," said Rogue. "Anyway, what I found was octopi. On land. Strangling people. There were loads of news reports about it. So I landed my ship and cloaked it in a nice big park just out east from the city centre, and followed the octopi."

   "Sounds so simple when you put it that way," said the Doctor.

   "You know, you say that, but do you have any idea how many blue police shed things there are in this city? One of them was selling CBD oil!" Rogue exclaimed. He rubbed his hands over his face. "I had no food in my ship, barely any water as you can see, and I have spent the past five hours running around this stupid city hoping to see the two of you but stumbling into tiny shed-based businesses instead! I don't even have any of this century's currency loaded up so no ice cream from the ice cream shed for me!"

Harrow the Ninth by Tamryn Muir: good! I fucking struggled at the beginning getting through but it paid off. (3.5/5)

The Falls by Joyce Carol Oates: a fun gothic romance/tragedy set in Niagra Falls which took an environmentalist angle I was not expecting at all. Picked it up at a Goodwill and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. (4/5)

A Game of Thrones by GRRM: I mean, it's a classic. The way the plot unfolds at the end really is incredible, but from the first chapter it grips you. (4/5)

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas: HOLY SHIT if you read one book because of me let it be this one, it is criminally underrated for how well known it is. It is thee action-adventure novel of all time, hysterically funny and easy to read. (5/5)

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: I took a little dip into YA to bring some autumn vibes to my summer internship. Plot was bad, vibes came through. (2.5/5)

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: fucking slaps!! anyone who thinks it isn't romantic is dead wrong, I found it much more engaging than Jane Eyre, the other Bronte novel I've read. (4.5/5)

Just Above My Head by James Baldwin: a gripping account of two black families before and during the civil rights movement, of which one son becomes a famous gospel singer. Julia, one of the daughters and a child evangelist, stuck with me long after I finished it (5/5)

Nona the Ninth by Tamryn Muir: enjoyed it more than HTN, Nona asking about her birthday present made me cry, as did Campal :( (4.5/5)

That Summer In Paris by Morley Callaghan: put me in a massive reading slump over a silly little Goodwill read, never have I been less entertained by what was essentially a book of entirely gossip about 1920s writers. (2/5)

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: read it immediately after ABOSAS, holds up in its entirety, particularly in the environmental descriptions (4/5)

A Clash of Kings by GRRM: I've already posted about this a ton but holy shit, it's slow getting there but the payoff is incredible. really excited to keep reading bc George absolutely sold me on this web of political and personal relationships. (4.5/5)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Rewatch Part 4

Rey "If you see Finn before I do, tell him..."

To anyone who thinks this is a one-sided friendship.

It was honestly very brave of Rey to go alone to the First Order. She had a lot of faith in Ben/Kylo Ren cause she really didn't have a plan except to plead with him I guess.

We might have gotten a hint of their sexual tension before but it's full pride and prejudice here. The novel goes a little bit more in depth and it's canon from Rian/Adam that Ren wanted to kiss her her.

General Holdo is a great leader but is there a reason she couldn't just communicate her plan to get Poe off her back, it seems like it could've saved some trouble. 3PO running off to not be party to a munity hahahahaha

Leia coming back in time to dip out and knock out Poe. It's a great scene between Holdo and Leia about strength and leadership.

The throne room scene is brilliant just all around. The acting, the direction, the production, the look of it all. Snoke didn't bridge their minds though not sure where that came from, writing wise. Rey be patient with our boy, Ren, you didn't have a plan and he's having to come up with one on the spot. Adam driver played Ren's neutrality perfectly.

Rey in plucky but she Lord she did not think this through. Ren, not one for patience or controlling his temper, actually locked it up this scene to save them both. I didn't see this in theaters so I'm curious what the reaction to him killing Snoke was. Bet it was wild. Then the moment when they lock eyes like "you with me?" and here is this iconic moment. Power lightsaber couple.

I keep forgetting that Finn used to be in The First Order. General Hux, Phasma and company have known him for a long time. Hence the bitch slap Hux gives Finn haha.

I'm so annoyed that once explained to Poe, he agrees it's a good plan and stops trying to interfere.

We also see Ren at his full fighting level. Novice Rey wouldn't have beaten him. He's beating several trained individuals at once. He's finally freed in a way he's longed to be by choosing Rey.

The cinematography during this film doesn't get enough credit. Like at all. You can see that this film is a labor of love.

That moment when Rey thinks he's Ben only for Kylo Ren to be like hey girl, still here. It's a great scene, can't say that enough. It does go to further illustrate that there isn't any place these two can hide from one another. It's what makes them seen though and fully connected in a way they've never been to another person. Yeah, they ain't letting this go.

The fighting over the lightsaber. Beautiful visual.

General Holdo after watching some boat blow up, moves to action and goes out like a G. Seriously she needed to do something or she was the only about to survive. The sound production, once again, is just amazing.

Finn and Phasma fight is nice and it's wonderful watching him more and more confront his problems instead of running away from them. Rose and Finn could've at least had soot covered clothing. I mean something. They look pristine here. Overlay aside this is a beautiful shot of Leia.

I just love the shot with the planes. The trail of red like blood over the white salt. In the resistance typical shitty ass equipment. At least it makes sense here why they have poor equipment.

I do love that Kylo makes a competent leader if not an emotional one. I wonder if he had a moment to enjoy finally becoming boss. It's what even his grandfather never managed to do. It's obvious that he takes no pleasure in it. He wanted Rey there with him.

hahah General Hux and Ren are just chef's kiss.

Rose crashing into Finn was stupid. Finn dying a heroic death would've been better or at least no pointless. The kiss was undeserved. Finn looked grossed out and confused. Or Rose could've died the heroic death, I don't know, but this is trash. However, people need help if they personally attack actors cause they don't like their characters.

Luke Skywalker finally shows up. I will say this moment of finally stepping up feels so deserved cause we watched him bullshit for the entire movie. It also brings it around that ultimately Luke is a symbol at this point. His job wasn't about beating the First Order or even Kylo Ren, it was about having something (someone) to believe in. Leia and Luke had such a touching scene where you can see the love between them as characters and actors.

Kylo Ren testosterone kicks in and he's gotta fight Kylo Ren Mano e Mano. It's a great character beat. Luke wouldn't, nor could he, kill his nephew no more than he could kill his father. He did a very unorthodox heroic thing very in league with his legacy, he bought them time to escape without being violent towards his kin. The moment Kylo Ren realized he's fake though ha! what a moment.

Finally Rey and Finn reunite. There's more chemistry, relief and connection in this wordless hug than in every single one of FinnRose's scenes.

Finally, the death of Luke Skywalker. It's peaceful, purposeful, heroic and full circle which is more than Han got. Staring at those two suns we're called back to his days on tattooine.

The last forcetime between is filled with so much emotion, again without a word spoken. Allowing actors to emote and not always just speak is the sign of a great writer and director. Ren looks at Rey with such confusion and longing. Rey looks at Ren with such disappointment and tough love. Also, I didn't realize Poe and Rey hadn't met yet. It's like automatic frenemies.

On the other side of the galaxy children share the story of Luke Skywalker standing up to oppression, violence and so forth.... and we conclude.

Overall, I LOVE THIS FILM. I don't give a damn about the hate I receive for loving Reylo. It's a beautiful, well written film with great character development. Do I like the handling of Luke Skywalker? No. The titty milk scene was gross and demeaning. Everything else I enjoy whole heartedly.

Now onto Rise of Skywalker? God give me strength. I remember it was a mixed bag, mostly confusing hot mess with a terrible ending.

I've been avoiding the haitham's story quest because of how much it got spoiled and breed so much discourse😂 so I waited until now to complete it. And tbh its one of my favorites! Tighnari's is still at the top but Alhaitham's is right behind it.

I think its because parts of alhaitham's character either I relate to or remind me of my best friend, but also the npcs didn't felt like annoying as much as the other story quests. Like I know what they are doing by using npcs so we get to know the character a little better, but like in nilou's and cyno's case it felt kinda? lacking? idk maybe I'll need to rewatch those.

I have more to say but I'll leave it under a read more!

One thing I wish they would've added was Tighnari, since we were already in gandharva ville and I want those two to interact. But I appreciate Cyno being part of it🥰

About the discourse, I think people either didn't paid attention to the quest or they are emotionally weak im JOKING😂 Kaveh was the one provoking and alhaitham responded to his comments, but hthm didn't had to go so hard on that smile from a client comment that hurt ME😂

But then again Kaveh being like this must be only because of alhaitham, kinda like how Diluc is nasty around Kaeya so much that people jump off of a dragon to avoid their fighting🤷‍♀️, I HOPE bc i do like Kaveh, he was great in hthm's character teaser and I want to see that side of him again. Also kinda hurt he sees us on the same light as alhaitham now😪 Since he is a 4 star (as far as leaks say) hopefully he gets a hangout and there we can know more about him.

Oh and their interaction actually confirms my headcanon that Alhaitham can be veeeeeeery petty with Kaveh, like it shows how he is the younger one between the two lol like leave that painting alone.

Ok. Now the brainrot. The last part of the story quest is called "Pride and Prejudice" and I said on twitter a few weeks before this story quest that alhaitham is like Mr Darcy YOU CAN'T DENY IT AND LOOK AT IT NOW!! its in his story quest hyv agrees with me!!😂😂

Cyno is lizzie like pls, who can go toe to toe with alhaitham's dry comments if not Cyno?? And they have this relationship that started very badly and then evolved to them trusting each other 😭😭 also i think its funny how accurate it will be hthm responding to the "do you dance?" to "no if I could help it"😭😂😂

Anyway I took 384934 screenshots of alhaitham's house, I have some platonic and cytham comic ideas I'll eventually draw. I'm still burnout so I'm trying to save all my energy for work, I might continue posting sporadically.

Also as you can maybe tell I'm actually running out of ideas and the Real comfort would be reading the book version of Das Doppelte Lottchen that both this and the parent trap are loosely based on xD my mom still has an old hardcover version and I've always adored that book, wished I had a twin whenever I read it as a kid!

9. Pride and Prejudice

Alright so th Colin Firth series version is better and the YouTube Lizzie's diaries or what it is is the best anyway but we're doing movies here and the Keira Knightley version Is definitely a comfort film for me so here goes

10. Kyss Mig

First wlw film I ever watched, I still remember watching it (on mute, with English subtitles, there's no German or English dub anyway) in my parents' living room when I was 12 or so, with the computer display turned away from everyone else, actually pretending to be on tumblr (the rule was we had to be at least in the same room for evening family time even if I was uninterested in whatever movie or sports the others were watching but I was allowed to be on tumblr) and trying not to show any reaction to the screen bc at the time I had no idea what my parents' stance regarding LGBT ppl was (parents, tell your kids when you're okay with them being gay, bc they might be and they won't just Know that you're okay with that!), and idk I've had friends tell me it's not their fav film and maybe it's mainly the nostalgia for me but I still absolutely adore this movie and have rewatched it many times

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Specifically 2003! this movie omg every actor in this film absolutely ate their performance. Everyone in this film deserves an Oscar they killed it. And another point, Jessica Biel. That’s it, her.

2. In the Mood for Love

This is a Chinese foreign film, it’s drama, it’s romance, it’s beautiful. If you want to cry your eyes out and enjoy beautiful cinematography watch this film. It’s so so good I highly recommend it.

3. Last Night in Soho

Okay I only recently saw this movie so I’ve only seen it once, but it was so good. The 60s fashion, it’s set in London, it’s a thriller. It’s amazing! Ana Taylor Joy and Thomasin McKenzie, the leads, killed it!

4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

I shouldn’t have as big of a crush on Matthew Broderick as I have, but here I am. I love this movie! the break of the fourth wall, the funky high school shenanigans, the cinematography, the cast. Love it.

5. Wreck it Ralph

I can’t explain the love I have for this film. One of the best Disney movies ever and no I will not be taking criticism and I’m a Taurus you can’t tell me I’m wrong.

6. Pride and Prejudice

I put off watching this movie for so long and I’m so mad no one forced me to sit down and watch it earlier because it is so good!! The hand! The hand!

7. Bridget Jones Diary

One of my favorite rom-coms. I didn’t know I had a favorite rom-com till a few months ago I was feeling down and rewatched this one and it’s just a great movie. And Collin Firth.

8. Cats (2019)

This film is incredible. It is art. Again I will not take criticism. There will never be a right way to cgi humans as cats. The world was not prepared and did not have the right mindset to see this film. It was everything to me. I went to see it only because Taylor Swift is in it and I give her a large portion of my money and all my time, but it changed my life. Now the soundtrack is my comfort music. Yes, I know I need help.

9. Fear Street Part Two: 1978

If you like horror/mystery things and you have not seen the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix do yourself a favor and watch it right now. I know you just read me talking about Cats, but listen I’m not wrong about this. The whole trilogy is amazing, it’s gay, it’s incredible, but part two is my favorite the storyline is so good. Sadie Sink is in this film and I can’t stress this enough it’s incredible.

The Legendary Life of Queen Lau (2022, my first cdrama, damn the ppl who brought this one down, will probably rewatch because now I get more about the cdrama tropes they subvert, Li Jiaqi hopefully will get more main roles despite this debacle)

Love Between Fairy and Devil (2022, tumblr loves it for good reason, so good, well written and gorgeous costumes and scenery, I laughed, I cried, I shaked my fist at communication failures, learned to like Yu Shuxin's voice, who doesn't like a story about a demon lord who lost all his emotions and regains them with the help of a cute fairy, cultivation in several senses xD, some songs made it to my spotify 100 most played songs of 2022 list, will rewatch now that it is on Netflix)

Word of Honor (2021, the hype has a reason it is so goood, started out not liking WKX, how the tables turned, hahahaha, side characters who rock, morally grey main characters yay, "A'Shuuuu", you don't need on screen kisses to feel the love, character dump was confusing as hell, somehow missed that WKX is also boss of Ghost Valley in the beginning bc of that. 🤣🙈 Taught me to rewatch the first episode a little bit into the drama to actually get what's going on when there are a lot of characters.)

Old Fashion Cupcake (2022, my first jdrama, cute office romance about finding joy in life again, will make you hungry)

The Rational Life (2021, watch it if you want soft, caring, loyal WH but it is actually about Qin Lan's character overcoming bullying at work and being a model employee in a car company (and promoting e-cars 😄), could have been shorter)

The Blue Whisper (2022, wrecked me with all the suffering but so good and pretty, Ren Jialun going from cutiepie to badass, rocking his ear jewellery, red flags but you ship them anyway, Diliraba and Guo Xiao Ting, another talk it out already yelling at the screen drama, going from hating SML and his attendand to pitying them, LuoLuo 🫶, side characters you will root for, some songs made it to my spotify 100 most played songs of 2022 list, story is by the author who wrote LbFaD, not set in the same universe)

The Romance of Tiger and Rose (2020, Zhao Lusi the Queen, much needed comedy after TBW, loved it, nothing like a writer caught in her own badly written drama world trying to rewrite it while the rules of the world she wrote fight against the rewrites. Su Mu and First Lady just needed to talk to each other aaaargh)

Who rules the World (2022, find yourself a person who looks at you like Hei Fengxi looks at Bai Fengxi, geez Yang Yang, Zhao Lusi is a delight in this, they wrote the two lead characters too perfect??, draws you in with wuxia, gives you a lot of palace drama, including emo first prince who deserved more screen time but they ran out of ideas for him, Writing, editing and fight scenes got worse in the 2nd half of the drama, I guess because the director had to leave, needed to give more side characters a life, the sismance is perfect)

The Untamed (2019, watching to be finished in 2023, I was intimidated by the amount of characters and episodes so only started watching late in the year and am glad I waited because now I know wuxia storytelling better and can fully enjoy it, taught me that you don't need great cgi, sets or fight scenes to tell a compelling story, Wang Yibo 🥹, Xiao Zhan 😼, great side characters)

Semantic Error (2022, my first kdrama, watched it because of this and was not disappointed, enemies to lovers at university, cute quick watch)

The Blood of Youth (2022/2023, just started, the character dump is a lot but it is a romp so far, despite the kinda choppy writing/editing, also geez Youku those youtube subtitles are too fast for my tired eyes)

As someone who enjoys series/movies like the UK North and South, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, etc, where a small touch or little gestures can already be a big deal, slow burn romances in cdrama fit me perfectly. (The barbie kisses are something to get used to though. Props to Wang Hedi and Yu Shuxin who went for organic kisses once the feelings hit their characters.)

A/N: just something I wrote these last days inspired by some lines from one of my favourite films. yes, a couple of days ago I rewatched Pride and Prejudice for the millionth time and the scene where Darcy proposes to Lizzie hit as hard as usual.

   “Oh c’mon George! Can you please stop looking at her and listen to what I’m trying to tell you?” Fred groaned once he’s seen his twin brother staring at her, yet again. But George couldn’t help but stare at the entrance of the Great Hall. To be completely honest, he thought she was one of the most beautiful girls he’s ever met. She was talking to Hermione, too focused on her to sense his piercing eyes on her figure. Her soft features seemed even softer thanks to the light that invaded the Great Hall. Her eyes were shining while discussing animatedly with Hermione. George supposed it was something rather interesting. At some point – he couldn’t tell when, though – she has even started gesticulating.

A loud smack on the back of his head brought George back to reality. When he turned his head towards a smirking Fred he felt his cheeks reddening. Fred was not the only one smirking but Harry, Ron and Lee were there, too. The knowing looks were enough for George to be sure he wasn’t getting away with some lame excuse. But he stayed silent, not exactly knowing what to say to his friends. And now that he thought it through, what was he supposed to say? That he fancied Y/N? That seemed pretty obvious. Harry and Ron chuckled but decided not to torment him any further. Instead, they excused themselves and went to their next class.

  The silence made him feel uncomfortable but he didn't want to speak first. George sighed in relief when Lee finally decided to open his mouth. “Don’t you think it’s time to say something to that poor soul?” The boy shook his head “I don’t think she fancies me. I mean, we’ve known each other for years. All I've been doing for months now is flirt with her any chance I get.”

“Are you sure you’re flirting? Eye contact and light touches here and there aren’t enough sometimes” Lee nodded at Fred’s words. And deep down George knew his twin was right, that he should tell you instead of subtly flirting once or twice a week. It’s not that difficult. Once you find her alone, you take her somewhere more private and shoot your shot. The plan in his head, though simple, seemed rather effective.

  But she was so out of his league, even for the most famous prankster of the entire school. So smart, genuine and kind that nobody was worth her undivided attention. Her grades were stellar and the hobbies she had were unparalleled and far from George’s. She was an artist. In her free time, she was always doing something creative, like reading, playing an instrument or knitting. He knew that because he has been bothering Hermione to get to know pretty much anything he could on her .

  He didn't notice the girl turning her head towards the boys at the Gryffindor table. Y/N is quick to catch George's eyes and shoot him a gracious smile. Oh c’mon you idiot, do something. She’s flirting, she’s definitely flirting is all is repeating to himself. But before he could wave at her, she starts to approach the boys at the table, Hermione right behind her.

  “Hello boys” she greeted them with the same smile she shot George a minute ago. With that, the idea of her flirting with him faded together with his hope of being his type. Again.

He didn’t pay attention to the greetings she received and avoided the conversation she started with Fred and Lee. Until she said the word “cracker”. His eyes shot up to the girl in time to catch the remaining of the discourse. “My cousin sent me some crackers after I told him about the situation with the Umbridge. They’re nothing like yours, of course, but I reckon the pink toad knows nothing about how these muggle ones work.” The conversation went on for a couple of minutes. She told them how to use them and George found himself mesmerized by the girl’s knowledge on the topic. “I’m not a fan of crackers and I'm not going  to use them so if you ever needed them, let me know. I’ll be more than happy to get rid of them.”

She was out of sight when Fred cleared his throat and announced to his twin that if he didn’t ask her out soon, he would. George laughed at that but knew that he needed to end his agony. He spent all day pondering the options on the matter but they seemed so stupid the more he went through them.

It was at dinner that Ron suggested something interesting. “You could always try and make her jealous. You know, you could pretend to date some random girl and see her reaction”. At first, George thought it was a bad idea. He would have to convince someone to pretend to date him. But he also thought that, if the plan worked, Y/N would make a move on him, tell him that she's always fancied him. And they’d finally be together. But if that didn’t happen, if she didn’t show interest at all, that would hurt him even more. Yet, the more he considered the plan, the more he convinced himself that was the right thing to do. So the next day he asked his good friend Alicia to fake-date in front of Y/N next Monday at breakfast.

George needed to get a reaction from the girl. He wanted to know if what he felt for Y/N was unrequited ad he had to give up and forget her, or if she fancied him as well.

What he wasn’t aware of was that Y/N has fancied George for a while. Yet, if he looked for proof, he wouldn’t find any. She was pretty good at disguising her feelings as kind gestures, such as smiling or waving. She sometimes would try and speak to him alone, laugh at his jokes or ask questions if she was chatty that day. And that wasn’t flirting, was it? Plus, everyone knew she was always the quiet one who didn't mean to sound flirtatious. She was aware that she was shy and not good at showing affection to her loved ones. So, she never considered she was acting like a flirt. She was sure she was being rather subtle with her pining but she was wrong, of course. On that day, Hermione explained what she knew about flirting and dating. She resolved, what Y/N was doing was flirting, even if almost non-existent. After that, it didn’t take long for the bright witch to learn what Y/N felt for George Weasley. And that lead to hours of telling her to confess, to make a move, to make it crystal clear that she fancied the prankster. Otherwise, someone else would find a way to his heart.

The process lasted less than imagined. Only a couple of days of distracted expressions and head in the clouds. It also coincided with the weekend and Y/N was not planning on crying her eyes out because of a boy. So, she postponed the whole “profess-your-feelings-to-George” idea to Monday. She was sure that having time to let everything sink in would be good.

All weekend Y/N expected second thoughts or any other impediment to happen. But on Monday morning, there was nothing that could prevent her from her original plans. So, nervously, she got changed and mentally prepared herself to face George.

“So, are you going to do it?” asked Hermione as soon as Y/N met her in the Great Hall. “If it’s of any help, Ron and Harry told me George has been talking non-stop about you for weeks. I'm pretty sure he likes you.” Y/N smiled and tried to stay calm, but everything inside her was screaming. “I’m not sure I’m ready but I'm doing it anyway.” she stated. Then, she took a big breath a continued on a funnier note. “And if it goes wrong I’ll drown myself in the huge pile of homework we have to do”. Hermione laughed and then patted her shoulder to show her support. “I’ll be here in case you need me”. Y/N ’s face softened at her friend's words. After taking another big breath, she stepped into the crowded Great Hall.

Her eyes meticulously scanned all the faces in search of George but it seemed like he wasn’t there.That’s odd, he’s never late for breakfast she thought. Fred was already there, surrounded by everyone she could think of, except for the one she was looking for. Maybe it was a sign. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe some kind of guardian angel was trying to send the message that it was not a good day to profess her feelings.

She went back to reality when someone lightly bumped into her shoulder. Y/N ’s eyes, until that moment, fixed on the Gryffindor table, landed on the couple who passed her. They were holding hands and Y/N couldn’t help herself imagining what holding hands would be like with George. But she didn’t have the time to indulge too much in the thought because something ginger caught her eyes. The “something” turned out to be George’s hair.

All she wanted to do was to divert her gaze, forget what she was going to do that morning. But her eyes seemed glued to the scene unfolding in front of her and incapable of focusing on anything else. The couple was now standing mere feet away from her and George was leaning in, as if he wanted to kiss the girl. In the end it was a simple kiss on her forehead but the act itself was enough for her. Y/N felt her heart sinking and before she could do anything to prevent it, tears formed in her eyes. And the more she saw, the more she wanted to slap herself. How could she be so naïve and mistake some kind gestures for interest? George was being so nice to her because it was in his nature and because she hung with his little brother’s friends a lot. How could she not see it?

She was so focused on the scene in front of her. So much that she didn’t notice the tears starting to stream down her face or George’s head turning towards her. But she wasn’t going to show him any of her feelings, so she turned around and run out of the Great Hall as fast as she could. Her run came to an end when something – or rather, someone – pulled her robes and made her turn around. Hermione was now standing in front of her, a sad expression on her face, and Y/N knew that her friend knew. She still wanted to say something, anything to try and justify her run but couldn’t. Instead, she felt her cheeks turning even redder and new tears forming. She had no idea how it happened but a moment later, she felt Hermione's arm around her. And as her head fell on her shoulder, she started sobbing.

Where did it go wrong? Were they happy tears or sad tears? You idiot, obviously they were not happy tears. George couldn’t shake Y/N ’s tear-stained face out of his mind. He wasn’t expecting this reaction. He didn’t do anything completely wrong, either. He didn’t snog Alicia or proposed to her in front of Y/N , he simply kissed her forehead. That meant nothing, either for him or for Alicia. He did what he did to prove his point that Y/N didn’t fancy him. To get a reaction, to see what she felt. He was so sure she would understand that and make a move, it didn’t matter if good or bad.

“So, how did it go?” asked Ron when George took a seat next to him. Across from him, Fred and Lee stopped planning their next prank and turned their head to hear George. He was still studying Y/N ’s reaction, pondering words as not to sound more confused than he already was. “I didn't think I'd made her cry” blurted out the boy, pouring himself a goblet of juice. But before anyone could make any type of comments he added “I’m not sure if that was the reaction I was looking for, though”. “Well, now you’ll understand if she fancies you or not” stated calmly Ron “And decide whether what you’ve been doing for months was flirting or pining” added a smirking Fred.

“Excuse me?” Hermione’s voice snapped behind George. The boy went white as he realised Hermione has been there long enough to find out about the plan. One by one, the other boys decided it was best to return to their breakfasts. That left George to deal with the girl alone. He could see she was fuming so thought it best to stare at her, letting her rant about how stupid the whole idea was. “How could you do that to her? She’s a sobbing mess because you didn’t have the guts to confess your feelings. Among all the options you had, you chose to risk hurting her to not deal with your heart being broken. I wonder why she fancies you. Yes, she should have admitted her feelings for you as well, but she didn’t do something like this just to get a reaction.” The whole situation, Hermione lecturing him, made George feel like a young boy again. Always trying to defend himself when accused of something. But at that times, it never mattered whether it was his fault or not. This clearly wasn’t the case.

“I didn’t know what to do. I panicked because she’s so out of my league. And I didn’t want to make a fool of myself in case she wasn’t interested.” he tried to resonate with Hermione, wording out loud the thoughts that have been floating in his mind for weeks. But the moment he spoke, he came to the conclusion that the whole plan was stupid. “Plus, it seemed like she was completely indifferent to me and my flirting” that was his last resort. Blaming her for not noticing all along only angered Hermione more. “That’s because she’s shy. Y/N hardly shows her true feelings for me. We’ve been friends for years now and I have seen her cry only once when she got bad news from home." An uncomfortable silence fell and George could see Hermione pondering her next words. "Also, if it is of any consolation,  a couple of day ago I found out she likes you.” George stayed silent, letting Hermione’s words sink in his brain. “I really fucked up” was all he admitted before getting up and running out of the Great Hall to find Y/N .

“There you are. Ron thought you might be here but I wasn’t sure I should listen to his suggestions this time.” George has been looking all day for the girl, but it seemed impossible. She always managed to find alternative ways to go to class to avoid him but they both knew she couldn’t hide forever. When she didn’t show up for dinner, Ron hinted at Y/N ’s favourite spot. And there they were, right outside one of the greenhouses.

Y/N didn’t have the strength to find an excuse to sneak away. She was exhausted, both mentally and physically after hiding from him all day. At this point, whatever he needed to tell her, she was ready. “What do you need?” she sounded tired and even a little unpolite but she didn’t care. She forced herself to look up at George’s face. Sparkling eyes and a loving smile looking at her. George  

“I’d like to apologize for how I behaved this morning. Alicia and I are not dating, we’re just friends. I actually asked her to help me. That scene this morning was supposed to get some kind of reaction out of you, I never wanted to hurt your feelings.” he stopped to catch his breath. He’d never admit it to anyone but he has been rehearsing this whole speech all day so that he wouldn’t make mistakes. Y/N smiled and nodded weakly, encouraging him to continue. “The thing is that I like you, a lot. And I've tried so hard to make it obvious but it didn’t work. I know I am out of your league. I mean, you’re gorgeous, kind, talented and smart, but I’d be honoured if you’d go out with me”. He couldn’t believe he said that. It was a piece of cake, why didn’t he do it sooner? Silence fell between the two, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. George knew Y/N was thinking it through. He didn’t want to pressure her further and so turned around and mentally prayed that everything would turn out fine.  

“You know, it hurt. A lot. Today I wanted to tell you the very same thing you told me. But what hurt wasn’t the act itself but the fact that I thought I was late to tell you that I liked you.” George turned to face the girl, who was now smiling. “All day, I've wanted to slap myself because of that. It seemed like, the only time I decide to speak clearly about my feelings and overcome my shyness, I get there late. So, it’s me who’d be honoured to go out with you” her smile was wider now. And though it was dark outside, George saw her cheeks turn red. “Friday night it is then. It’s a date.” it was difficult to contain the happiness now. Before he could stop himself, he felt his arms wrap around Y/N’s figure in a tight hug. The girl grinned and reciprocated. “It’s a date, then” she confirmed and lost herself in George’s arms.

The Pride and Prejudice Proposal Scale

I am avoiding thinking about work because it’s stressful and have been down another P&P hole. Rewatching the 1995 miniseries because I could work and dip in and out with attention. Read the book over 10 times. 

I feel - and hear me out - that on a technical level, Mr Collins’s proposal to Elizabeth was better than Mr Darcy’s initial proposal; especially when you factor in that the Bennet Sisters can’t just put all their eggs into the love basket. 

To my mind, there are 6 proposals within the story - two are very “off-screen” and one is pretty much off-screen but we get hints through letters. 

We have:  - Mr Darcy’s proposals 1 and 2 - Mr Collins’s proposal to Elizabeth - Mr Collins’s proposal to Charlotte Lucas - Mr Wickham’s proposal to Lydia - Mr Bingley’s proposal to Jane

If you think about how a proposal ought to be: tailored to the individual, prepared to a degree, not a shock (even if you’re not expecting it, you will have thought/spoken about it previously with your partner), a happy experience.

With these criteria in mind, we can assess the quality of each. Some are harder to assess but we can make assumptions based on what the characters learn through conversation or whether or not the characters get married.

If I were to rank them, I would rank them thus:

6. Mr Wickham’s Proposal to Lydia I thought long and hard over whether this should be 5th or 6th and I docked points for the sheer audacity and dodgyness of it.

Spur of the moment - or was it? Kitty wasn’t surprised

Not a happy experience for the family but Lydia seems ok. Maybe. It’s hinted that he’s maybe not a kind husband.

She said yes but at the cost of her reputation - they were living together for weeks before they actually married

While she said yes, docked several points for Lydia’s age (15) and the fact it was uncertain whether Wickham even would have married her. We will never know because he was strong-armed into it.

5. Mr Darcy’s First Proposal 

Unexpected, completely out of the blue

Spur of the moment

Started strong but immediately ruined by listing reasons why he shouldn’t even be asking

Went in assuming she’d say yes because he’s such a catch

Rejected - everyone sad.

4. Mr Collins’s Proposal to Elizabeth

Prepared and planned to a point: he knew he’d be proposing, just not to which sister.

Lists his reasons for marrying - all unromantic, but mostly reasonable

Everyone suspected it was coming - would have been a mediochrely happy event. He’d be satisfied, Lizzy miserable and Bennet women secure for the future

HOWEVER

assumed he’d be accepted (what with the reasonable reasons)

Responded to rejection with Denial and nonsense before leaving to go to the Lucas’s.

3. Mr Collins’s Proposal to Charlotte Lucas

Spur of the moment - on the rebound

Probably adapted his speech to Lizzie - adaptable? He might have tweaked it for success.

It was done just well enough that she agreed, knowing it was the best she might get

Bold as brass - it takes courage to propose within hours of being rejected, even if she has been hinting she’d do it.

Happiness for Mr Collins, a contentment for Charlotte and pleased Lucas parents

Married quickly and home set up efficiently.

2. Mr Bingley’s Proposal to Jane

Again, this happened off-screen, so I am making some assumptions based on before, after and character interactions.

Fairly planned - a long time coming

Hoped for by Jane, so not unexpected

One can assume that on the ride over he planned out what he was going to say

He probably apologised a lot for being a dimwit led astray by his callous sisters

They’re clearly disgustingly happy about it and so are the Bennets

Married quickly - agreed to a double wedding when he didn’t have to.

Stayed at Netherfield even though that means being within 5 miles of Mrs Bennet all year round.

Only downside is how long it took him but his feelings were steadfast.

1. Mr Darcy’s Second Mini-Proposal

He’ll have mulled it over quite a bit in the days leading up to it

He reponded to Elizabeth’s rejection feedback by acting on her cricitism and showing that he could be better

Didn’t so much ask her as tell her that he still felt the same way and if she still didn’t want him, he’d leave her alone and respect her wishes forever (further proving point 2)

Further to the above, he isn’t assuming she would say yes (though she’s hoping he’ll ask again) thus again proving point 2.

Made it clear that he didn’t expect anything from her for fixing the Elopement fandango - again, point 2.

Understated, personal, sweet

Successful and everybody is happy

Married quickly - double wedding

So yes. That is how I’ve ranked the proposals. 

Much better and easier to do than what I’m supposed to be doing.
