Two horses, as well as plows, disks, harrows and other implements are a part of the centre's equipment. Private Bell is disking down the mid after his fellow convalescents had harvested a bumper crop of potatoes.

He was handing out a newspaper article that called out Israel's occupation and how it's against humanitarian law. As a Jewish Canadian, I'm scared.

For anyone who may not know, today at the Toronto Metropolitan University, a number of Pro-Palestine (antisemitic) protestors set up outside the Hillel Centre (which is a centre for Jewish campus life) and were screaming things like "shame". They were verbally aggressive and yelling at the students. They chose this spot because they are blaming these Jewish students for a war they had zero involvement in, for a war on the other side of the world. They are blaming them simply because they are Jewish. This is the definition of antisemitism. And if you are not Jewish, shut the fuck up because you do not get to decide if I am offended as a Jewish person.

If this was towards people of color, or LGBTQ+ people, everyone would be talking about it. But they aren't, and yet it's the same. Let me be perfectly clear:

BLAMING PEOPLE FOR THE WAR IN GAZA SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE JEWISH IS ANTISEMITIC

And yet, this is what those Pro-PalestineHamas protestors are doing. They are just students going to school. What is wrong with people that they think this is okay? Why is it that only Jewish people seem to be talking about this?! Jewish people take up less than 2% of the Canadian population. Why is it that the other 98% is not saying anything?

I'm scared because this country is my home. I'm scared because I know there are people here that hate me because I am Jewish.

I'm scared because the last time Jewish people started being treated this way, 6 million of us were tortured, starved, and gassed to death.

This post is not about Palestine or the war, so please don't yell at me about that. This post is about antisemitism in Canada. This post is to inform you that Jewish people are scared and we are angry that so few Canadians seem to care.

End of summer celebration!!

Quinn's head hung as the door shut behind him, the image of all his family members staring at him in pity replayed in his mind as his back leaned up against the wood as he loosened the tie around his neck, trying to stop the slightly suffocating feeling that was the aftermath of his failed wedding.

Tears seemed to be welling in his eyes as he took a deep breath, embarrassment filling his chest as it dawned on him that his fiance, a woman he had been with for nearly five years, a girl he had grown from a fresh out of university twenty year old into a man with had left him, just a few moments before she was meant to be walking down the aisle. Her mascara smudged as she apologized profusely, her nerves getting the best of her as she pulled Quinn away from his brothers and into a broom closet to tell him she didn't think they were ready to make such a big commitment.

And if he was being really honest with himself, he wasn't quite sure why he was rushing into marriage.

Maybe it was the pressure of the leadership role he had taken on only a year prior, feeling so young in some aspects he often overcompensated for his age in growing up too fast. Still, he was so mature in almost every other aspect of his job, that it had him feigning seriousness in his personal life.

The look on the bride's face was enough to know that she wasn't ready to take that leap, and really he was a little relieved, anxiety all over her expression as Quinn agreed and pulled her in for a hug to help soothe her.

There was a little bit in him that felt like in some senses he dodged a bullet, there was always a sense of security with the girl, but there never was a lot of love, just a lot of stability, and the logical side of him was okay with that.

He stood up straight pulled off the undone tie from around his neck and rid himself of the confinements of his jacket. His eyes searched the room and in the centre sat his childhood best friend and the girl he had spent years pining after, on the edge of a hotel bed, a sad smile on her face as she watched the colour drain from the man's face.

"Jack told me where you were, I just wanted to make sure you were okay," she watched as he quietly wiped the tears away from his eyes. His face filled with even more embarrassment as he felt a sense of pity filling the room.

Quinn’s chest tightened as he looked at her, the weight of everything that had just happened pressing down on him as he watched her brows knit together like she was trying to study his expression, gauging how to comfort him. He hated that feeling, the one where people try to take care of you, the vulnerability that lingered around him.

His tie on the floor felt like a symbol of the commitment that had just slipped through his fingers. He felt hollow, the adrenaline of the moment leaving him drained and lost as he tired walked over to the bed and sat down beside her.

The two of them lay down, legs hanging off the bed as they stared at the mirror on the ceiling. There was a sadness in her gaze and a deep understanding of his pain. It seemed as though she knew the feeling of disappointment all too well.

That was the thing with Quinn and the girl lying beside him, there had never been a time for them, there were years of feelings, an entire semester followed by a summer of hooking up, and then Quinn moved to Canada to start his life And from that point on it was summers of never seeing each other, years of on-and-off communication, but never being in the same place as once.

So everything between them remained unfinished—a story with too many open chapters, too many "what ifs" hanging in the air. The unspoken emotions, the memories of fleeting moments, and the connection they had shared were all still there but buried beneath years of life taking them in different directions.

She hesitated momentarily before reaching her pointer finger out and gently brushing against his knuckles. “I’m so sorry, Quinn,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

He let out a shaky breath, his eyes dropping to the floor as he struggled to find words. But before he could say anything, she hooked her finger with his. Her touch was warm, a new kind of comforting, a reminder that he wasn’t completely alone in this.

“I don’t know what to say,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. She squeezed his hand, her own emotions flickering across her face as she looked up at him. “You don’t have to say anything. I just… I’m here, okay?”

Quinn nodded, his throat still too tight to speak. He felt like he was on the edge of something, teetering between holding it all together and completely falling apart.

After a long moment of silence, she took a deep breath and said something that caught him off guard. “You know,” she began, her voice trembling slightly, “I would’ve married you.”

He propped himself up on his elbows to look at her, his eyes wide with surprise. Her words hung in the air, heavy and loaded with meaning. There was a part of him that had always wondered, that had always thought about what might have been if things had gone differently between them, but to say it out loud made the thoughts very real.

She gave him a sad smile, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she put her hand on his chest and pushed him on his back so he would stop looking down at her. Their eyes met through the mirror, a look of vulnerability and understanding passing between them. The weight of her words lingered in the air, and Quinn could feel the emotions he’d tried to bury for years surfacing all at once.

“I mean it, Quinn. If things had been different… if we had stayed together, I would’ve married you.”

Quinn’s heart ached at her confession, the truth of it cutting through the fog of his emotions. For a moment, he let himself imagine it—the life they could have had together, the happiness they might have found.

But that life was just a fantasy, and the reality was standing right in front of him, her hand still holding his, offering comfort in a moment when he needed it most.

“Why didn’t we?” Quinn finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper, as if he were afraid the question might shatter whatever delicate thread still connected them. Her gaze softened, and she let out a shaky breath. “We were always just a little too late, Quinn. The timing was never on our side.”

He nodded silently, a shared feeling spread between the two of them as they just sat in the comfort of each other's presence. Quinn's mind was no longer stuck on a loop of embarrassment, now full of a little hope, maybe even a sense of clarity.

“Thank you,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. She nodded, her thumb gently stroking the back of his hand. “You’re going to be okay, Quinn. I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but you will be.”

He looked into her eyes, seeing the sincerity there, the genuine care she still had for him after all these years. It was enough to make him believe, even just a little, that maybe she was right. Maybe, somehow, this closed door would open one where she sat prettily behind it.

Let’s also not forget that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has voted against anti-scab legislation not once, not twice, but eight times in the past. The Conservatives only voted for it this time because they knew better than to pick a fight with the labour movement as we approach the next election.”

Currently, employers are able to hire scabs in order to break the morale and bank accounts of striking and locked out workers, as is the case with members of CUPE 2614 at the Port of Quebec, who have been locked out and replaced with scabs since September 2022.

Employers also use scab labour to ship jobs out of the country, as is the case with members of CUPE 2815 who have been locked out from their jobs at Videotron in Gatineau, Quebec since October 2023. While these workers have gone seven months without a paycheque, Videotron is able to continue business as usual, while paying bottom-dollar to ship jobs out of the country.

Anti-scab legislation will make all of this illegal. Employers will no longer be allowed to hire replacement workers (scabs) during strikes and lockouts, thereby balancing the scales and giving more power back to workers to fight for better wages and a better life. [...]

So I’ve been thinking about cultural Christianity lately and how people tend to get very upset about it without really understanding what it is, so here is a primer

Cultural Christianity is not a choice you make. It does not mean you are Christian, or even that you remotely like Christianity; a lot of people who vehemently hate the religion do so because of their own cultural Christianity

It is not a shortcoming, or a moral failing, or a sin. It just means that the culture you were raised in was predominantly Christian.

Note: I did not say “majority Christian”. Christians don’t need to be a majority to have a dominant cultural influence

Cultural Christianity means you inherently understand and probably use swearwords like “damn”, “hell”, or a variation on the name “Jesus Christ”

It means when I say cultural Christianity is not a sin, you understand exactly what I mean without needing to have it explained - and you probably know the phrase “original sin” or “seven deadly sins”, even if not in full detail

It means hearing about Hades, god of the dead, wealth, and volcanoes, and assuming he’s the bad guy of Greek mythology… y’know, like Satan

(EVERYONE went to Hades when they died. The Elysian Fields, where the best heroes went, was in Hades’ underworld. The Eleusinian mysteries, a cult to Demeter and Persephone, was basically about asking them to tell Hades to give you a cool afterlife

And he would cuz he drank his “respect wife” juice if not all of his “respect women” juice. Did still kidnap her. But she is a major feature and often makes the decision herself or influences his when they’re mentioned together

Meanwhile, people try and cast Zeus as a good parent)

It means having to have a dreidel, a menorah, or a kinara explained to you at a time when you already knew about Christmas trees and Santa

(Yes, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, major host of the Mass of Christ, is culturally Christian. Even though Coke invented his aesthetic - that’s the “cultural” part)

It’s when you go to make up a new non-religious or pan religious winter celebration… that is centred around a day with family and gifts which is obviously the 25 of December. Maybe counting down 12 days before

It’s defaulting to calling a place of worship you don’t know the name of a “church”

Cultural Christianity is not something people have a choice in; you don’t pick where you’re born, and there are so many other cultures in places like Canada, America, and Britain that are culturally Christian out the ass! But… you will catch Contact Christianity in any of these places

It’s damn near impossible to consume any American or most Western media without brushing across it; cross imagery is everywhere, Christian demons and devils sneak into media all around the world

Western (and some other) Gothic fashion leans heavily on gothic architecture and, yeah, heavily Catholic imagery

Now, brushing across the media in other parts of the world does not impart the same level of cultural Christianity as growing up in a city with four churches on a single block and a Santa Claus parade

And you can grow up heavily in an entirely different culture even in the Bible Belt (but you know what Bible Belt means); you don’t have to abandon all other culture just because Christianity has a chokehold on your home

But when December (or fucking November these days) hits and you hear Mariah Carey in 3/6 stores, yes, you probably have some cultural Christianity

You sure as hell don’t need to be able to name half the denominations (can you name more than 4?), you may never set foot in a Christian church in your life, and still have a cultural Christian influence

If your street names have “saint” in them

If there are crosses or angels on more than half the graves in a cemetery

If you know how to cross yourself but aren’t really sure when you learned; you didn’t look it up or do research to find out

Now note: none of these have an inherent moral judgement attached to them

It’s just about what the culture you live in has taught you about the world, and there’s no culture that is magically the Right One or better than the others

There’s no reason to expect even specifically Christian culture to be the same around the world; it isn’t. It has the same root, but what flowers from the soil is another matter entirely

There is nothing wrong with acknowledging that you have culturally Christian influences and biases; being human is 90% absorbing information from the world around us and half processing it at best - there’s just too much input, and intentionally filtering out Everything Christian Ever?

Well unless you started at 2 years old, odds are pretty good it’s not really a personal choice kinda thing

And you cannot compensate for these influences unless you acknowledge that they exist, that you did not choose to form them, and that you do get to choose how they affect your actions going forward

Christmas stuffed a bunch of other religious traditions into a single package to make itself popular, but if you learned them as Christmas traditions first… do I even need to say it?

Bangladesh will raise the minimum wage for garment workers by 56.25%, the first hike since 2019, the junior labour minister said on Tuesday after a week of protests calling for higher salaries. The minimum wage for workers will be increased from 8,000 taka to 12,500 taka ($114) per month from Dec. 1, State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian said. There will also be a 5% annual increment. The protests, which led to clashes with police that killed two workers and wounded dozens more, pushed the government to form a panel of factory owners, union leaders and officials to consider the demand for higher pay.[...]

"(Government welfare) cards will be provided to the workers, later the ration cards will be given to them so they can buy essential commodities at cheaper rates," Rahman, also a former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told Reuters. Workers, however, are not happy with the rise at a time when inflation is running at 9.5%.

The wage board for garment workers has set the minimum salary at Tk 12,500, a little over half of what workers demand. Union leaders have rejected the new minimum wage put forth by the wage board, which accepted the proposal of factory owners’ representative Siddiqur Rahman. The current starting wage is Tk 8,000. Union leaders yesterday threatened to go for tough demonstrations. Workers had demonstrated for 12 straight days.[...]

Before the announcement, members of the Minimum Wage Board, formed on April 9, held a meeting at its office. While the meeting was going on, union leaders outside chanted slogans demanding a minimum wage of at least Tk 23,000. Demanding a starting salary of Tk 25,000, Montu Ghosh, president of Garment Sramik Trade Union Kendra, said the measly amount set was not enough to lead a good life. Inflation and high prices of essentials have made things worse for garment workers. Ghosh along with other union leaders of the Mojuri Briddhite Garment Sramik Andolon, a platform of workers’ unions, in a statement rejected the new minimum wage and called for a rally on Friday where they would announce tougher programmes[...]

If the workers’ unrest continues, the responsibility will lie with the wage board, Nazma said.[...]

[The] president of the Bangladesh Apparel Workers’ Federation, said the prime minister’s intervention is needed in setting the new minimum wage. He demanded ration cards, not the family cards of the TCB, for the garment workers.[...]

The new minimum wage is much less than those offered in India, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. Only Pakistan has a lower minimum wage. Early last month, the Centre for Policy Dialogue, after a survey, interviews and research, estimated that the minimum wage for an RMG worker should be Tk 17,568. The new minimum wage falls short of that. The think-tank had delved into food and non-food expenditure patterns of 228 workers from 76 factories and even considered how many earning members an average RMG worker’s family had. The CPD had stated that the food cost for an RMG worker family was at least Tk 9,198 a month but notes that the standard food expenditure for a family of four would be Tk 16,529 and that the garment workers have to cut corners to make ends meet.

It said 12 percent of the workers’ families do not buy milk at all, 5 percent do not buy sugar, and 5 percent do not consume fruits.
