He also gives an unsparing view of himself - telling a no-holds-barred story of an American soldier who made sacrifices far beyond the call of duty . . . a soldier who, in defiance of the U.S. government, refused to turn his back on the Vietnamese. Review: This is a book that is great in some places, less so in others. I was actually tempted to stop reading it part way through because of how the story ends, and there will be spoilers in this review.

This book is a lot about failure, and overcoming failure, and then more and more failure. So much failure. This is a dude who... fails. He also succeeds but where the heart of the story is, well it's in his failures. He manages to end up in the famed Green Berets as a medic and assigned to Project Delta/B-52 but is basically kicked out for being a liability. He ends up in the 101st with their brigade LRRP team where he finds his first home. For those of you who read a lot about the VN war, you'll recognize a lot of the cast of characters in this section, with a majority of the focus being on his relationship with Rey Martinez. He then bounces around a bit, a little time in Germany, some time training medical stuff at replacement centers, and eventually as an Advisor in a few different areas. Throughout all of this he falls in love, fucks up the relationships, gets into a fucked up relationship, does a lot of drugs, gets drunk a lot, gets in trouble a lot, and eventually marries a VN woman who he later drifts apart from even though staying close to his brother in law who he fought with. At one point he tries to kill his XO and is court-martialed for it, but somehow manages to serve his time and rejoin the army for a very long career - totally unheard of but true! The problem with the book is that it is uneven, which keeps it from being a 5 star book... his coverage of certain battles is super finely detailed whereas his court martial and time in jail is barely a wisp of text. He tells more about using drugs and drinking than he does talking about his role as a medic and the training. Overall a good book and fills in some more stories from the 101st and the 302nd RF Co. He does a great job with the other cast of characters, and their stories and it's worth it just for that.

The story of Nathan Packard

In Keith Brough and Frank Gardner's book, General Ward's Colonial Army, they write about a man named Nathan Packard, who they describe as a 1st Lieutenant and son of Zachariah Packard and Abigail Davenport. They further write that this individual was born in 1733 seemingly in Bridgewater, was a 1st lieutenant in Col John Bailey's Regiment in 1775, a captain in Colonel Edward Mitchell's Regiment, and holding similar positions until 1779 in varying companies (and regiments). They say he died in 1798 at age 65. But this snapshot is still not enough. Who was Nathan Packard and what was his story?

Note: This was originally posted on Mar. 30, 2018 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.

I wrote in my family history about some of those relating to Nathan Packard. I noted that

Nathaniel and Lydia would have two children before each of them died in the 18th century: Zachariah(1697-1771) and Mary (1695-1770). Mary would marry into the Leonard family. Nothing else is known about her. As for Zachariah, he would marry a woman named Abigail Davenport, and have four children: Elijah (b. 1725), Nathan (1733-1798) who was a captain in the Revolutionary War, Abigail and Nathaniel (d. 1721). When Zachariah died in 1771, he would have a will and inventory that were in keeping with the agricultural lifestyle of many of the Packards. Within his will, he would give his sons Nathan and Nathaniel a “servant” named Peter, his daughter Abigail a “servant boy” named America, and said that a “servant maid” named Ann would be given to his wife Abigail, only set free after her death...Hence, he [Zachariah] is clearly a slaveowner which was not explicitly stated in his will, except for calling the enslaved people listed above “servants” who are “worth” to him (as “quick stock”) a total of 69 pounds, 4 shillings, 9 pence. Using this measurement, it means that these people constitute almost 33% or one-third of his total property! Through his distribution of enslaved people to his sons Nathan and Nathaniel, daughter Abigail, and wife of the same name, it makes all of these individuals slaveowners as well.

Michael, on Find A Grave adds a further meaning of Zachariah's inventory:

By the way, I just started looking at your family history. The excerpt from Zachariah's will you quote on page 19 contains a word (Mistress) that you apparently couldn't interpret because of the cursive writing style of the time, which wrote lower-case "s" almost the way we would today write "f" except in the final position or after another "s." Hence "history" would look a bit like "hiftory" and "mistress" would look a bit like "miftrefs." Compare the German letter "ß" (Eszett), which is a ligature double "s." The line reads, "The Service of the Negro woman Ann during her Mistress [sic, should be Mistress's] Life."

But there is much more to the story. Moses Cary writes in A Genealogy of the Families who Have Settled in the North Parish of Bridgewater that Nathan Packard had seven songs, five daughters, marrying a woman with the last name of Jackson. Bradford Kingman adds in his "acclaimed" History of North Bridgewater about Nathan too. He writes that Nathan was a captain from North Bridgewater in 1778, a resident in Bridgewater's north parish in 1770, served in the British military in 1755, was a 1st lieutenant in 1775. [1] Nathan Packard is an established Patriot. He served as a captain while also noting he served as a 1st lieutenant and that he married a woman named Lydia Jackson (on October 10, 1758, with her named "Lidia" in the record). Later on, a woman named Mary Manley Packard would become a charter member of a DAR chapter "through the service of her great-grandfather, Capt. Nathan Packard, who was a illustrious patriot of the Revolution."

Nathan has a Find A Grave entry noting that he and Lydia moved to West Bridgewater (now called Brockton) to raise their family. The had 12 children in all! His gravestone is mostly unreadable except for his name and perhaps his year of death. The gravestone of his wife, Lydia, is much more readable. That is all I will note for now, but the story of the Packards continues onward.

A year after slavery was abolished in New York State, Capt. John Jackson made history -- he was the first Black man to purchase property on Staten Island on Feb. 23, 1828, in the area today known as Sandy Ground in Rossville.

Further anchoring Sandy Ground’s place in history: It is the oldest continuously inhabited community established by free slaves in North America.

Capt. Jackson was an operator of a ferry on the Blazing Star line, which traveled from the Arthur Kill to New Jersey. It is believed he ferried escaped slaves from the South to Sandy Ground, making it one of the stops on the Underground Railroad.

Sandy Ground was initially known as Harrisville, named for Moses and Silas Harris who later settled in the area in the hopes of finding land suitable for farming. Instead, they found grounds that were “sandy” -- hence its current name.

The Harris brothers introduced one crop that would grow there: strawberries. This became a profitable venture for the brothers as they delivered the strawberries to market themselves, cutting out the middleman.

Soon after, Sandy Ground became home to freed slaves from Maryland who were fleeing restrictive laws that forbid them from gathering for educational and religious purposes. They were also driven away by a law that prohibited them from harvesting for oysters in the Chesapeake Bay unless they were accompanied by an 18-year-old white male.

At Sandy Ground, they found abundant oyster beds in the Arthur Kill by Prince’s Bay. With that came economic stability, but more importantly, they found freedom from persecution.

Sandy Ground grew to include 108 families with Rossville AME Zion Church as the community anchor.

The founder and first minister of the church was William H. Pitts, a Virginia-born African Methodist Episcopal Zion minister who purchased land in Sandy Ground in May 1849 and began holding prayer services in his home, according to the City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The church was formally recognized in December 1850. Two years later, the congregation purchased land on Crabtree Avenue to build a church, along with an adjoining cemetery. By 1890, the congregation had outgrown the simple clapboard church and built a new church at its present-day site at 584 Bloomingdale Road.

Rossville AME Zion Church was also renowned for its camp meetings, open-air barbecues, clambakes and other social events that drew hundreds of participants both Black and white.

The church was designated a New York City landmark in 2011 -- the cemetery already had landmark status. The Rev. Issac Coleman and Rebecca Gray Coleman House and two “baymen’s cottages” were also granted landmark status in 2011. The two identical cottages, built between 1887 and 1898, housed the oystermen.

Today, Sandy Ground is home to 10 families who are descendants of the original settlers and who still worship at Rossville AME Zion Church. The Sandy Ground Historical Society holds photographs, exhibitions and tours to document its place in history.

In further recognizing Sandy Ground’s legacy of freedom, one of the new Staten Island ferryboats that will be put into service has been christened The Sandy Ground.

Entertaining claptrap about a Restoration beauty (Margaret Lockwood) named Barbara who seduces the wealthy squire Sir Ralph Skelton (Griffith Jones) on the eve of his marriage to the virtuous Caroline (Patricia Roc). But having married Sir Ralph, Barbara quickly becomes bored with life in the country, dresses in men's clothes, sneaks out by a secret passage, and turns highwayman. This puts her in competition with (and the bed of) the notorious Capt. Jerry Jackson (James Mason), the terror of the county's roads. Eventually the wicked are punished and virtue is rewarded, of course. The story needs a little more tongue in cheek than writer-director Leslie Arliss is able to give it, but it moves along nicely. Mason, as usual, gives the standout performance.

"Capt. Crozier wishes me particularly to tell you that all the botanical collections of the Terror were made by Lyall," Joseph Dalton Hooker wrote to his father, the eminent botanist Sir William Jackson Hooker, in December 1843 from the Falkland Islands, where James Clark Ross's expedition was preparing for a third voyage towards Antarctica. "The latter often walks with me & though no Botanist, endeavours to make good collections, in which I am glad to hear you say he has succeeded."

Hooker and David Lyall, the assistant surgeons of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, were two of the youngest members of the Antarctic expedition: both turned twenty-two in June 1839, a few months before the expedition left England, and were serving in their first appointment on a Royal Navy ship. Hooker, who had originally hoped to be the expedition’s naturalist, had begun attending his father’s lectures at Glasgow University when he was seven, and saw the expedition as an opportunity to discover new plants in previously unexplored regions. Lyall had less of a scientific background: after leaving an arts course at an Aberdeen college without finishing the degree, he obtained a surgeon’s license from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (though he would not be awarded an MD until 1844) and served on a Greenland whaling ship before joining the navy in June 1839. It appears to have been the Antarctic expedition, and his association with Hooker in particular, that first interested Lyall in botany. Writing up the first volume of his Flora Antarctica in 1844, Hooker praised "my zealous friend and co-operator, Dr. David Lyall," and named an entire genus after him (Lyallia, a cushion plant endemic to the Kerguelen Islands).

The two surgeons’ professional paths diverged after the expedition returned to England in 1843. With the exception of a pair of sinecure appointments while he worked to publish the expedition’s botanical results, Hooker had little further involvement with the navy. He went on to a brilliant career as a botanist, developing a close friendship with Charles Darwin and succeeding his father as the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in 1865. Lyall continued as a naval surgeon, though he retained a keen interest in botany. Through Hooker's father's patronage, he was appointed surgeon on HMS Acheron's survey of the New Zealand coast from 1847 to 1851, giving him an opportunity to closely study the island's plants. He also collected a wide-ranging herbarium while working on an official survey of the land border between the United States and British Columbia, which took him from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains between 1857 and 1862.

Hooker and Lyall remained friends and correspondents until Lyall’s death from complications following a broken arm in 1895, aged 77. Hooker, who wrote obituaries for him in two different journals, noted that they had been the last two surviving officers of the Antarctic expedition. He spent the last years of his life offering advice to a new generation of Antarctic explorers, and died in December 1911, aged 94.

As is my custom this time of year I would like to remember those lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor 78 years ago today. I would like to remember the 2,335 people killed and 1,143 wounded. I would like to remember the everlasting scar on those families and our Nation. I would also like to remember the 2 Sailors from the USS Nevada who earned the Medal of Honor during that attack. Captain (Then Lieutenant) Donald K. Ross, USS Nevada. “For distinguished conduct in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage and disregard of his own life during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. When his station in the forward dynamo room of the U.S.S. Nevada became almost untenable due to smoke, steam, and heat, Machinist Ross forced his men to leave that station and performed all the duties himself until blinded and unconscious. Upon being rescued and resuscitated, he returned and secured the forward dynamo room and proceeded to the after dynamo room where he was later again rendered unconscious by exhaustion. Again recovering consciousness he returned to his station where he remained until directed to abandon it.” Chief Boatswain Edwin J. Hill. USS Nevada (Posthumously) “For distinguished conduct in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage, and disregard of his own safety during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. During the height of the strafing and bombing, Chief Boatswain Hill led his men of the line handling details of the U.S.S. Nevada to the quays, cast off the lines and swam back to his ship. Later, while on the forecastle, attempting to let go the anchors, he was blown overboard and killed by the explosion of several bombs.” There were 15 MoH earned in Pearl Harbor and 1 earned on Sand Island that day. Of the 15 earned 11 were earned posthumously, giving the greatest sacrifice for their Brothers in Arms and their country.   Captain Mervyn S. Bennion, USS West Virginia. (Posthumously) “For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage, and complete disregard of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. As Commanding Officer of the USS West Virginia, after being mortally wounded, Capt. Bennion evidenced apparent concern only in fighting and saving his ship, and strongly protested against being carried from the bridge.” Chief Petty Officer John W. Finn, Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay. “For extraordinary heroism, distinguished service, and devotion above and beyond the call of duty. During the first attack by Japanese airplanes on the Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Territory of Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, he promptly secured and manned a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on an instruction stand in a completely exposed section of the parking ramp, which was under heavy enemy machine gun strafing fire. Although painfully wounded many times, he continued to man this gun and to return the enemy’s fire vigorously and with telling effect throughout the enemy strafing and bombing attacks and with complete disregard for his own personal safety. It was only by specific orders that he was persuaded to leave his post to seek medical attention. Following first-aid treatment, although obviously suffering much pain and moving with great difficulty, he returned to the squadron area and actively supervised the rearming of returning planes. His extraordinary heroism and conduct in this action are considered to be in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service.” Ensign Francis C. Flaherty, USS Oklahoma. (Posthumously) “For conspicuous devotion to duty and extraordinary courage and complete disregard of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. When it was seen that the U.S.S. Oklahoma was going to capsize and the order was given to abandon ship, Ens. Flaherty remained in a turret, holding a flashlight so the remainder of the turret crew could see to escape, thereby sacrificing his own life.” Commander Samuel G. Fuqua, USS Arizona. “For distinguished conduct in action, outstanding heroism, and utter disregard of his own safety, above and beyond the call of duty during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. Upon the commencement of the attack, Lieutenant Commander Fuqua rushed to the quarterdeck of the U.S.S. Arizona to which he was attached where he was stunned and knocked down by the explosion of a large bomb which hit the quarterdeck, penetrated several decks, and started a severe fire. Upon regaining consciousness, he began to direct the fighting of the fire and the rescue of wounded and injured personnel. Almost immediately there was a tremendous explosion forward, which made the ship appear to rise out of the water, shudder and settle down by the bow rapidly. The whole forward part of the ship was enveloped in flames which were spreading rapidly, and wounded and burned men were pouring out of the ship to the quarterdeck. Despite these conditions, his harrowing experience, and severe enemy bombing and strafing, at the time, Lieutenant Commander Fuqua continued to direct the fighting of fires in order to check them while the wounded and burned could be taken from the ship, and supervised the rescue of these men in such an amazingly calm and cool manner and with such excellent judgement, that it inspired everyone who saw him and undoubtedly resulted in the saving of many lives. After realizing that the ship could not be saved and that he was the senior surviving officer aboard, he directed that it be abandoned, but continued to remain on the quarterdeck and directed abandoning ship and rescue of personnel until satisfied that all personnel that could be had been saved, after which he left the ship with the (last) boatload. The conduct of Lieutenant Commander Fuqua was not only in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service but characterizes him as an outstanding leader of men.” Ensign Herbert Charpiot Jones, USS California. (Posthumously) ‘For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage, and complete disregard of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. Ens. Jones organized and led a party, which was supplying ammunition to the antiaircraft battery of the U.S.S. California after the mechanical hoists were put out of action when he was fatally wounded by a bomb explosion. When 2 men attempted to take him from the area which was on fire, he refused to let them do so, saying in words to the effect, “Leave me alone! I am done for. Get out of here before the magazines go off."’ Captain (future Rear Admiral) Isaac C. Kidd, USS Arizona. (Posthumously) "For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage, and complete disregard of his own life, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, by Japanese Forces on December 7, 1941. He immediately went to the bridge and as Commander Battleship Division ONE, courageously discharged his duties as Senior Officer Present Afloat until the USS Arizona, his Flagship, blew up from magazine explosions and a direct bomb hit on the bridge, which resulted in the loss of his life.” Lieutenant Commander Jackson C. Pharris, USS California. “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while attached to the U.S.S. California during the surprise enemy Japanese aerial attack on Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, December 7, 1941. In charge of the ordnance repair party on the third deck when the first Japanese torpedo struck almost directly under his station, Lt. (then Gunner) Pharris was stunned and severely injured by the concussion which hurled him to the overhead and back to the deck. Quickly recovering, he acted on his own initiative to set up a hand-supply ammunition train for the antiaircraft guns. With water and oil rushing in where the port bulkhead had been torn up from the deck, with many of the remaining crewmembers overcome by oil fumes, and the ship without power and listing heavily to port as a result of a second torpedo hit, Lt. Pharris ordered the shipfitters to counterflood. Twice rendered unconscious by the nauseous fumes and handicapped by his painful injuries, he persisted in his desperate efforts to speed up the supply of ammunition and at the same time repeatedly risked his life to enter flooding compartments and drag to safety unconscious shipmates who were gradually being submerged in oil. By his inspiring leadership, his valiant efforts and his extreme loyalty to his ship and her crew, he saved many of his shipmates from death and was largely responsible for keeping the California in action during the attack. His heroic conduct throughout this first eventful engagement of World War II reflects the highest credit upon Lt. Pharris and enhances the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.” Chief Radioman Thomas J. Reeves, USS California. (Posthumously) “For distinguished conduct in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage and disregard of his own safety during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. After the mechanized ammunition hoists were put out of action in the U.S.S. California, Reeves, on his own initiative, in a burning passageway, assisted in the maintenance of an ammunition supply by hand to the antiaircraft guns until he was overcome by smoke and fire, which resulted in his death.” Machinist’s Mate First Class Robert R. Scott, USS California. (Posthumously) “For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and complete disregard of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. The compartment, in the U.S.S. California, in which the air compressor, to which Scott was assigned as his battle station, was flooded as the result of a torpedo hit. The remainder of the personnel evacuated that compartment but Scott refused to leave, saying words to the effect “This is my station and I will stay and give them air as long as the guns are going.” Chief Watertender Peter Tomich, USS Utah. (Posthumously) “For distinguished conduct in the line of his profession, and extraordinary courage and disregard of his own safety, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor by the Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. Although realizing that the ship was capsizing, as a result of enemy bombing and torpedoing, Tomich remained at his post in the engineering plant of the U.S.S. Utah, until he saw that all boilers were secured and all fireroom personnel had left their stations, and by so doing lost his own life.” Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh, USS Arizona. (Posthumously) “For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and complete disregard of his own life, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor T.H., by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. As commanding officer of the U.S.S. Arizona, Capt. Van Valkenburgh gallantly fought his ship until the U.S.S. Arizona blew up from magazine explosions and a direct bomb hit on the bridge which resulted in the loss of his life.” Seaman First Class James R. Ward, USS Oklahoma. (Posthumously) “For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and complete disregard of his life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. When it was seen that the U.S.S. Oklahoma was going to capsize and the order was given to abandon ship, Ward remained in a turret holding a flashlight so the remainder of the turret crew could see to escape, thereby sacrificing his own life.” Captain Cassin Young, USS Vestal. (Killed in Action November 13,1942, Gaudalcanal.) “For distinguished conduct in action, outstanding heroism and utter disregard of his own safety, above and beyond the call of duty, as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Vestal, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, by enemy Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Commander Young proceeded to the bridge and later took personal command of the 3-inch antiaircraft gun. When blown overboard by the blast of the forward magazine explosion of the U.S.S. Arizona, to which the U.S.S. Vestal was moored, he swam back to his ship. The entire forward part of the U.S.S. Arizona was a blazing inferno with oil afire on the water between the two ships; as a result of several bomb hits, the U.S.S. Vestal was afire in several places, was settling and taking on a list. Despite severe enemy bombing and strafing at the time, and his shocking experience of having been blown overboard, Commander Young, with extreme coolness and calmness, moved his ship to an anchorage distant from the U.S.S. Arizona, and subsequently beached the U.S.S. Vestal upon determining that such action was required to save his ship.” First Lieutenant George Ham Cannon, Sand Island Midway Island. (Posthumously) “For distinguished conduct in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage, and disregard of his own condition during the bombardment of Sand Island, Midway Islands, by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Lieutenant Cannon, Battery Commander of Battery “H”, Sixth Defense Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, U. S. Marine Corps, was at his Command Post when he was mortally wounded by enemy shell fire. He refused to be evacuated from his post until after his men, who had been wounded by the same shell were evacuated, and directed the reorganization of his Command Post until forcibly removed, and as a result of his utter disregard of his own condition he died from loss of blood.”
