Andy shakes her head, fond, then turns to Nicky, who’s looking at her with a steady, patient look in his eyes. “What?” She asks, her tone biting, as if she didn’t know what he’s about. She’s known him since he was born. He doesn’t answer verbally, just tilts his head slightly to the right, his look turning even softer. Andy heaves a sigh, plopping down on the ground, suddenly exhausted. “She’s a clever one, Andy. Her idea isn’t so bad.” Nicky whispers, gently. He knows he’s treading dangerous ground, but he also knows Andy. He knows they can’t ignore the issue forever. “Children always think that everything has an easy solution,” she grumbles, staring towards the horizon. “Even if we could steal a submarine without getting hunted by every military force in the world, we wouldn’t even know where to start looking, Nicolò. You know this, I know this.” Her voice grows tighter, so she stops speaking. “At least she elaborated her dreams in a way that doesn’t put her in danger. Everyone will think she’s just a very impressionable child, and there won’t be any risk.” She concludes, a moment later. Nicky remains silent, hands clasped in his lap. They look at the ocean together. He can feel that something else is weighing on Andy’s heart, and knows how to wait it out. “Do you think she feels it?” She murmurs, after a few minutes, not looking away from the horizon. “Do you think she… she knows there’s another one? That Nile is a happy kid that wants to find her?” Her voice is clogged with tears she hasn’t allowed herself to cry for centuries. “I don’t know, Andy. I can only hope that she felt Sébastien, back then, and that she can feel Nile now.” Nicky answers, keeping his voice as low as hers, out of respect of their shared grief. “I hope she can feel our love through them.” Andy clenches her fists around her elbows, trying to stop herself from breaking down. “I wish it could be as easy as Nile thinks,” she hiccups, biting her lip soon after, hard enough to break the skin. By the time she’s passed her tongue on the injury, it’s already healed. “I miss her so much, Nico.” Nicky lowers himself on the grass next to her and takes her into his arms. “I know, Andromache. Manca anche a me.” He holds her tight as she cries, hiding her face in the crook of his shoulder. He doesn’t let his own tears slip until he feels Joe’s arms around him, his lips soft against his hair. Booker closes the circle, covering Andy’s exposed flank with the bulk of his torso. They don’t need to be told what’s going on. It takes a while before they’re done letting out their grief for Quỳnh. Somewhere in the cold depths of the Atlantic Ocean, trapped in a rusting coffin, Quỳnh holds her breath long enough to bask in the vision of a little girl playing with her stuffed animal, and being kissed on the forehead by a loving mother. Her new sister wants to find her. Quỳnh hits the lid of the coffin with more resolve, and dies again.

summer !! like most people, but specifically whenever we go to the ardennes over summer which usually is like a 3-4day situation during which i either read 6 books or 4 books But One Of Them Is Stormlight (i cannot wait for that this summer UGH i still have a stormlight i havent read yet........ cant wait), also as a bonus, the WHERE i read most: by a still body of water. dont ask me why its simply the case

wait hold on: 1) FENCING AU??? tell me more 2) I saw your post about the Italian foil grip and think it's sexy but I need your thoughts on pistol grip and also need you to tell me what you think Nicky thinks of them

!!!! fencing au is the most incredibly self indulgent thing i have ever come up with and i am so glad you asked about it. essentially:

the old guard is a smallish fencing group/club/team

they all can fence all three weapons but they do have preferences which are:

joe and quynh are sabreurs (sabreur joe is just. very important to me okay. i can't easily explain why but sabre is perfect for him)

booker and lykon are épéeists (because a. booker is french b. couldn't figure out where else to put lykon and i wanted even numbers)

nicky and nile are foilists (because i'm a foilist mostly and i like them though nicky is still very good with sabre which is where half the plot of this au comes from)

andy can fence equally well with all three and she's also the group's main coach

anyway. the plot is kinda hand wavey at this point bc i don't have all the details figured out yet but. it's originally the guard minus nicky until nicky shows up one evening

(nicky previously had some kind of injury or something (possibly a different condition? i don't know yet) that kept him from fencing for a couple years until andy gently bullied him into coming back bc she found out she lived in their area (also they met when andy was working with his old group/team in italy))

nicky narrowly beats joe in sabre and joe's both annoyed about it bc he lost and absolutely over the moon bc he has someone new to fight who's good who isn't quynh. he loves fencing quynh but he's just excited to have someone new

cue a kind of rivalry. or something.

anyway eventually actual plot happens and andy signs them up for some kind of local competition (which merrick's team is also participating in. merrick is a foilist, kozak is an épéeist and keane is a sabreur which doesn't really work with how they are in canon i don't think but also they're like that bc i want a merrick vs nile showdown at the end). except during joe's fight he gets injured fairly badly. and can't fence for a while because of it

so he withdraws for a while. you know. angst and all that. anyway eventually he tries to go back to fencing

the first time doesn't go well! he jumps right into the proverbial deep end and ends up aggravating the injury again a little. it's not bad it just hurts a bit but it's. frustrating. he kinda walks out after that

nicky, who joe had been fencing and who is also worried about him, follows him out and they talk for a while about things and then nicky eventually offers to drive him home (joe usually gets a ride with booker). but he gives joe his number in case he wants to talk (bc nicky's been through a similar thing before)

so then some stuff happens in the middle. nicky helps joe work through some stuff + helps him get back to where he was. they also fall in love or something over the course of this bit. and other assorted things occur that i haven't thought of yet

the ending involves going to another competition i think

and some other details that aren't particularly relevant to the plot:

booker uses a french grip because he's french and i think it's funny

merrick also uses a french grip

nicky uses an italian grip (as you probably already know from the italian grip post) because he's italian and a foilist and an old man. they're all mortal in this au but he's still an old man. italian grips are fairly uncommon in my experience but nicky just prefers it

everyone else uses pistol grips bc i think they're the best and also again in my experience they're a lot more common. nicky doesn't particularly mind pistol grip but he's been using italian grip for a while + was trained w/ it (i have no idea if that's particularly common practice but im saying he was anyway) so he just prefers it/thinks it's better. nile makes fun of him for being an old man tho (her 'is that an honest to god rodin' moment in this au is nicky showing up with this thing bc nile has never seen one before then)
