what's the deal with the commentator mic being bidirectional and then blocking one side off?? isn't it possible to have a monodirectional mic instead
Microphones have "polar patterns" which dictate their directionality. You can adjust the pattern to minimize sound from different directions and invite more sound from a preferred direction.
Tumblr media
Remember sound waves are more of an ever-expanding sphere than a purely directional energy. So these polar patterns are 2D representations of a 3D phenomenon.
Omnidirectional accepts sound from all directions in 3D space. Cardioid patterns try to reject sounds from the sides and back. A shotgun mic would be the most directional, probably close to what you are thinking. No polar pattern can reject all sounds from any direction, but can greatly minimize them.
Now the reason the lip microphones are bidirectional is actually because of the special diaphragm they use. Ribbon mics are fascinating in their own right. The diaphragm that translates the sound into electricity is a tiny corrugated piece of metal that is suspended between two magnets.
Tumblr media
You might already be able to tell why this style of mic is bidrectional. That strip of metal is sensitive to sound from two directions, so it is easier just to block the sound from the back using the mic enclosure.
The aluminum is not magnetic, so the two attracted magnets kind of squeeze it to keep it in place. Back in the day, these mics could be quite fragile, but audio engineers loved the sound quality compared to traditional condenser mics that have a thin disc membrane that vibrates from air pressure.
Tumblr media
Also, those cool labyrinthian baffles in the commentator mic help keep sound from the front reaching the back of the ribbon. Sound really likes to reflect into every nook and cranny and sound going forward is also going to come back at you if you don't stop it. They really thought of everything.
The commentator mic uses the ribbon diaphragm because it has a low sensitivity. A lot of guitarists and drummers like ribbon mics because they can turn up their amps or bang on their drums super loud without overloading and distorting the mic.
So the short answer to your question is... ribbon mics of that era were bidirectional due to their special diaphragm and they needed the low sensitivity more than they needed a polar pattern with more rejection. So they used other techniques to reject sound from unwanted directions.

Untitled poem by myself
We’re making bread. You’re putting in the cracking of the eggshells and the fine particles of flour dancing in the air and the exact proportions of the measuring spoon. I’m putting in the music that’s playing and the warmth of my hands kneading the dough and the little bit more flour because it’s sticky. When dinner is over, you’ll have drank the cool ice tea out of our cups. And I’ll say, “Oh, cardioid!” And you’ll look at me and I’ll point to the bottom of your glass and say, “The shape the light is making. It’s called a cardioid.” And neither of us will quite understand the other, but you’ll have had a wonderful, nourishing meal of bread and soup and tea, and I’ll have had a wonderful, nourishing meal of singing and making and light shining on the bottom of a glass.

MAESTRO 300: A Flexible Gaming Headset With Comfort
Tumblr media
MAESTRO 300
With a universal plug-and-play compatibility, the lightweight MAESTRO 300 gaming headset captures crisp voice with its unidirectional microphone and produces immersive audio with 40mm neodymium drivers. Any head may be comfortably fitted with its swiveling, tiltable ear cups, adjustable headband, and high-density memory foam earpads, which come in breathable mesh or protein leather. When it comes to advanced 3D sound and audio tuning, the Nahimic headset software provides an unmatched level of immersion.
SOUND DEPTH
Experience rich audio reproduction with 40mm neodymium high-resolution speakers that have been painstakingly tuned to produce lifelike playback. With their wider frequency response, these drivers offer a lifelike audio experience that captures even the smallest details in your preferred video game, films, or songs. They also have clear highs, accurate mids, and deep bass.
Creating a Robust Sound
Several sound modifications were done by MSI Audio Engineering while honing the MAESTRO 300. The original version (green line) had a lot of treble but not enough bass, so it was clean and sharp but lacked the power in the bottom end that you need for a better movie or gaming experience. The second version (blue line) increased bass at the expense of clarity, which made it more difficult to distinguish crucial sounds in games, such as footsteps. The final yellow SPL curve was obtained after much testing, balancing the bass and treble. With these astute acoustic adjustments, the MAESTRO 300 now produces a well-balanced sound that is perfect for gaming, music, and movies.
QUIET CHAT, EASILY DETACHED
With this premium, detachable cardioid microphone, you can wave goodbye to annoying background noises during talks. Its pick-up pattern concentrates on the wearer rather than everything around them. Because of the mic boom’s flexibility, any head shape may be easily accommodated. It works just as well for professional use as it does for strenuous gaming sessions, providing crystal-clear communication. Just take off the microphone to relax with some music or a movie.
LEATHER THRILL OR MESH CHILL
With replaceable high-density foam earpads, you can feel cool or snug. Select from breathable mesh for a light feel or opulent protein leather for more comfort. During lengthy gaming sessions, the breathable mesh earpads are made to optimize airflow, keeping your ears cool and comfy. The protein leather earpads, on the other hand, provide a more luxurious and soft feel along with a somewhat improved seal to keep out outside noises, making them ideal for concentrated use. Because of its adaptability, you can tailor your audio experience to the circumstances and your tastes.
IN DETAIL: LIGHTWEIGHT COMFORT
With its thick head padding, swiveling 90-degree tiltable earcups, and a sturdy size adjustment mechanism that fits snugly to your head shape and rotates easily for storage and travel all without sacrificing durability the incredibly light MAESTRO 300 (247g) places a premium on comfort. It’s perfect for extended gaming sessions.
Complete command
Use the media buttons to take command. Mute the microphone and easily adjust the volume.
Available on many platforms
The MAESTRO 300, designed for PC gaming, can easily connect to Mac, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. Due to its adaptability and ease of usage, it’s essential for gamers who want a smooth and immersive gaming experience across all platforms.

It has adjustable equalizer settings, noise reduction for clear audio communication, and enhanced situational awareness for competitive gameplay. It also preserves steady audio levels and enhances bass for improved comfort and hearing protection.

MSI fine-tuned high-resolution 40mm Neodymium drivers to provide lifelike sounds for immersive listening.
Detachable Unidirectional (Cardioid) Microphone: An excellent microphone for crystal-clear audio recording.
Mesh Chill or Leather Thrill: Luxurious protein leather for seclusion or breathable mesh for breathability characterize these high-density foam earpads.
Sturdy, Lightweight Comfort – Weighing only 247g without the microphone, the headband can be adjusted to accommodate any head shape, and the earcups may be rotated.

Best 15 Vocal Microphones for Singing at Home - Mugafi
If you want to record songs at home and you have no idea about which microphone to use, then here I am to help you out, covering from the cheapest to the most expensive microphone you can use to record your song at home. Frankly speaking, your performance is what matters. No matter which microphones you use for singing, your songs will sound amazing, but the fact cannot be ignored that a good microphone for singing will make your vocals sound pleasant and soothing to the listeners.
Types of Microphone
Before discussing various microphones for singing, let us understand the different types of microphones.
USB Microphone
If you need a convenient microphone for singing at home, it is a great choice. A USB microphone has an interface built in itself, which enables you to plug it directly into your USB port. A USB Microphone also has amplifications so as to adjust the signals at the right levels. There are a plethora of options when you use a USB microphone for singing at home.
The problem with a USB microphone is that you cannot replace or change it and also cannot connect other microphones for singing until and unless you purchase new USB microphones for singing. For this reason, I rather advise you to invest in purchasing an interface, or you can also go with a dynamic microphone, which is inexpensive too. While you are using the dynamic microphone for singing at home, it is very convenient to jump or upgrade to the condenser as per your need.
Dynamic Microphone
A dynamic microphone is very useful and makes a lot of sense for singing at home. It is a great microphone for singing as it features a cardioid pickup pattern. Usually, you’ll use a dynamic mic when you wish to record any instrument or vocalist with either a broader range in amplitude (volume) or that is really loud. They can withstand higher SPLs without getting damaged or distorting inside.
Condenser Microphone
It will be best to choose a condenser microphone for singing. If you have a good budget, then you should definitely invest in a condenser microphone for singing at home, and I promise you will not regret investing in it. Also, whenever you are using a condenser microphone at home for recording, then do purchase a Pop Filter that will improve your vocal quality, making it clear as it eliminates breathing noises and extra background sounds. Condenser microphones overcome the flaws of the dynamic microphone as they specialize in recording small details when coupled with phantom power.
These were three main features or types you can say when it comes to different types of microphones.
Commonly used Microphone for Singing at Home
Let us discuss some of the most widely used microphones for singing at home or studio.
Shure MV7 USB
Shure MV7 Podcast Mic is easy to use. It has an in-built DSP, which is adjustable as per the requirement with high quality and dual-format, which means you can use it as either a USB Mic or as an XLR Mic or even as both at the same time.
AKG Lyra
The AKG Lyra is marketed as an ‘Ultra-HD Multimode USB microphone.’ It is very flexible in its use. You just have to plug it into your computer, load up your audio software, and here you are, good to go.
Blue Yeti
A blue yeti USB Mic is one with a switchable pickup pattern. This microphone looks super cool when kept at your desk. A blue yeti pro USB is the upper version of a blue yeti mic with some additional benefits.
RODE NT1
A is one of the best condenser microphones for beginners. This microphone has a large-diaphragm transducer type (25 mm), with a frequency response of 20Hz to 20 kHz. The Rode NT1-A has a cardioid polar pattern and a good frequency response that focuses on your performance and captures minutes of the details with no alterations.
Shure SM7B
This is one of the most widely used microphones for vocal recording.
The Shure SM7B is a favourite among professional musicians because of its dependable performance, premium build quality, and noise-cancelling software that allows for crystal-clear recordings. This microphone is intended for experienced experts and aspiring professionals in the industry; it is not for people just starting out in the recording. All recording ranges benefit greatly from the uniform frequency response, and various responses can be used in other studio applications.
It is the ideal companion for controlled-environment recording. Depending on the intended outcome, users can alternate between the three frequency responses flat, bass roll-off, and presence enhancement.
The high-pass frequency response is advantageous for professional audio mixers. It works wonders for reducing low-frequency electronic hums caused by nearby equipment.
KU5A microphone
A unique transformer and JFET circuitry are included with the active KU5A. Similar to the A440, R84A, and NUVO ribbon microphones, it has a unique transformer that boosts output while reducing perceptible noise and maintaining impedance. This permits more versatility with various preamps, including those found in audio interfaces, and consistent frequency response. When recording quiet sources like vocals and delicate acoustic guitars, the enhanced output of the KU5A is helpful, and the active circuitry eliminates background noise. Standard 48-volt phantom power is used to operate the KU5A.
DPA d: facto Vocal Mic
This super-cardioid condenser vocal microphone produces a sound that is incredibly crisp and well-defined. A multipurpose capsule is housed in the d: facto. The super-cardioid capsule can be used with a variety of wireless microphone systems, including Sony, Lectrosonics, Shure, Wisycom, Sennheiser, and more, by utilizing an optional adaptor. You’ll definitely enjoy the super-cardioid polar pattern of the mic on stage because it maximizes gain-before-feedback. The outstanding quality of DPA’s studio microphones is well known. With the DPA d: facto Vocal Mic, you can now achieve that fantastic sound live.
Audio Technica AT4040 microphone
The AT4040 offers exceptionally low noise, a wide dynamic range, and high-SPL capability for maximum versatility. It combines technical accuracy with creative inspiration. Even under the strict requirements of digital recording systems, this ultra-consistent microphone can be utilized with confidence in a wide range of studio and live miking applications. Transformer-free and symmetrical low-noise circuitry in the AT4040 produces very good transient responsiveness and clean output signals for transparent reproduction of even the most challenging instruments and sound effects.
Shure KSM32
A side-address, cardioid, single-diaphragm embossed condenser microphone for singing and live sound productions and demanding studio recordings. An open, genuine sounding reproduction of the original sound source is possible with the Shure KSM32 because of its expanded frequency response.
Neumann TLM 103
The TLM 103’s extraordinarily low self-noise is still hailed as a breakthrough. Technically speaking, a noise level of only 7 dB (A). In other words, the TLM 103 has such low noise levels that even the most subtle differences may be heard. As a result, it is ideal for demanding sample creation and instrumental recordings, as well as high-definition vocal and audio drama productions.
WA-47
Based on the iconic ’47 that has been utilized on innumerable hit records for the past 50+ years, the WA-47 is an all-vacuum tube, big diaphragm, transformer balanced, multi-pattern (9), large condenser microphone. With exceptional results on voices, acoustic/electric guitars, acoustic/electric basses, drums, piano, strings, brass/woodwind instruments, and a variety of other sources, the WA-47 is ideal for a professional studio home studio, live, and broadcast applications.
MA-200
The MA-200 is the result of Royer’s more than 20 years of experience designing bespoke microphones. Without the shrillness and high-frequency grunge so frequently heard with contemporary condenser microphones, the large-diaphragm MA-200 provides warm, full-bodied renditions of vocalists and instruments.

It is a workhorse microphone that captures voices, electric and acoustic guitar, percussion, and almost any source placed in front of it honestly and correctly.
Manley Reference Cardioid Tube Microphone
It is the most often used contemporary tube vocal mic worldwide. Top producers and voiceover artists both like the Manley Reference Cardioid Tube Microphone because it has that “complete” sound right out of the box.
This is the standard microphone for singing contemporary pop music; it is adoring, present, and enormous. The Manley Ref C is sometimes called the “Just Add Talent” microphone.
The Virtual Microphone System
The “VMS” is a hybrid system that makes use of an incredibly transparent condenser microphone, a preamp that is musically neutral, and a cutting-edge digital processing suite that mimics the sound of vintage microphones and preamps. Audio engineers may now access the virtual microphone closet of their dreams for less than $1,000. Top 5 Best Lightweight Gaming Headset in 2023 – Horriblegaming
The majority of people think that headsets that are easier to wear are more comfortable. Despite having less padding, they don't exert as much pressure on your head and ears. They are also less stressful on your neck as a result. Particularly for gamers that play for extended periods of time, these have a big impact.
Unfortunately, many consumers mistakenly think that lightweight gaming headphones are of lower quality. Usually, it's accurate. People who feel they aren't really to blame for this.
Because of this, it can be challenging to locate a gaming headset that is only 200 or 300 grammes.
You're in luck if you're seeking for a portable gaming headset.
Below is a list of the top 5 Lightweight Gaming Headset expected to be on the market in 2023.
Best Lightweight Gaming Headset
1. Razer Blackshark V2
Razer, you rock. We still don't understand how they were able to fit so much into something so small and light.
The Razer Blackshark V2 is among the lightest gaming headsets, although not being the lightest. Its 262 gramme weight is significantly less than that of many of its rivals' products. It still contains just as many features, if not more, as the previous one did.
The microphone and sound quality on this over-the-ear, closed-back headset are superb. 50mm TriForce Titanium drivers with separate high, mid, and low tuning choices are its main selling point. Also featured is a detachable Hyperclear Cardioid microphone. It is a function that makes it possible for the microphone to just pick up voices while blocking out extraneous noises.
As a final flourish, the Blackshark V2 has cooling cushions that are oval in shape and filled with gel. By doing this, the effects of pressure buildup are lessened, and the engine doesn't get too hot.
The $100 price tag on the Blackshark V2 only increases its worth.
Technical Specifications
Over-ear, closed-back acoustic design
 TriForce Titanium 50mm drivers
 Wired connectivity (5.9 feet)
 Hyperclear Cardioid Microphone
 Dimensions: 262 grams/9.2 oz.
2. Astro A50 Wireless (Gen 4)
Bravo to Razer. We're still perplexed as to how they managed to cram so much into something so little and light.
Though not the lightest gaming headset, the Razer Blackshark V2 comes close. It weighs 262 grammes, which is far less than many of its rivals. Despite this, it contains just as many features as the other, if not more.
This over-the-ear headset with a closed back has a great microphone and sound quality. It boasts 50mm TriForce Titanium drivers with distinct controls for the highs, mids, and lows. It also has a removable Hyperclear Cardioid microphone. The microphone can be made to focus just on voice calls thanks to this capability.
Closed-back, over-ear acoustics
Neodymium magnet 40mm drivers
Wi-Fi connectivity (15-hour battery life)
6.0mm unidirectional voice-isolating microphone
11.2 ounces or 380 grammes.
3. Razer Kraken X
A Razer product is on our list for the second time. This time, it's the Razer Kraken X, which is quite inexpensive.
For $50, you should actually be prepared to get a basic gaming headset. But, at least in terms of features, Kraken X is anything but lightweight. Typically, being lightweight means having less features. Taking into account that the Kraken X weighs only 250 grammes (8.8 ounces).
Despite being exceedingly light, the Kraken X has a potent punch. Because it includes virtual 7.1 surround sound, the depth, clarity, and sharpness of the sound are improved.
However, it is done using the app. You're forced to accept the deal at this price.
The Kraken X also has a beautifully understated design and is pretty comfortable to wear, if that's even a term. Certain improvements could be made. Although the design is excellent, the microphone cannot be taken out, and it has a plain appearance.
Technical Specifications
Closed-back, over-ear design
 Drivers: 40mm Neodymium Magnet
 Connectivity: Wired (4.27 feet)
bendable microphone Microphone Cardioid
250 grammes or 8.8 oz in weight
4. HyperX Cloud Mix
The HyperX Cloud Mix is not just one of the best gaming headphones on the market right now. It's conceivably HyperX's best gaming headset to date.
This is very complimentary. Few gaming headphones have yet been made by HyperX, a small company. However, there are still further justifications for praising the Cloud Mix.
Its appearance and feel are similar to that of an expensive headset, which is one feature. The aluminium frame has a sturdy, hard feeling. It is also portable and lightweight. In addition, a plush, soft material with a memory foam-like feel is used to cover the headband. This makes it comfortable to wear. The entire design is finished with a matte black lacquer that has very no branding on it.
It is not only the best, but it also works well. It can be used as a wireless headset in addition to having a wired connection. It can also be used by almost any Bluetooth-capable device, such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles.
The Cloud Mix has braided cables, a portable case, a retractable boom mic, and clear, balanced sound. A 20-hour battery life is typical. It only increased the bar for future HyperX audio products.
Technical Specifications
Closed-back, over-ear acoustics
Drivers: Personalized 40mm Dual Chamber
Wi-Fi connectivity (20-hour battery life)
Electret Condenser Boom Microphone
Weight: 260 grammes or 9.17 oz.
5. Audio-Technica ATH-ADG1X
The audiophile market is where Audio-Technica struggles to survive. They keep putting out useful headsets. The ATH-ADG1X from Audio-Technica does a fantastic job of illustrating this.
The ATH-best ADG1X's competitive price and distinctive Audio-Technica features are its main selling points.
Focusing on the other advantages is preferred because excellent sound is already a given. It's fortunate that the ATH-ADG1X has a lot to offer. This pertains to its weight (285 grammes), the comfort of the 3D Wing support system, and the length of the cords (6.6 feet). The mic is really clear and bright, and the ear pads are cosy.
The ATH-ADG1X furthermore features a metal honeycomb enclosure in addition to all of this. This enhances audio quality while keeping the headset lightweight and cool.
Technical Features
Open-air, closed-back acoustic design
53mm drivers
Wired connectivity (6.6-feet)
Hypercardioid Electret Condenser Microphone
Weight: 285 grams/10.1 oz.

I know some aros have adopted anatomical heart imagery but what if we also used cardioids? They looks kinda like hearts (hence the name) but is also cool in it's own way and perhaps the difference could symbolise something?

Once you're comfortably familiar* with the general navigation of a fractal, you can start making design decisions. I'm going to continue using the Mandelbrot and Julia sets for some examples, because they’re the ones I know the best.
Here is a spiral.

It's a Julia set, rather than a Mandelbrot, for reasons I will go into later. It's a pretty standard example of the One Big Spiral category of fractals.
The cool thing is that you can, if you want, find an infinite number of very similar spirals, but with differently textured backgrounds. (Backgrounds is probably not quite the right word. But it's easier to type than 'repeating fields of fractal detail, at a smaller scale than the main shape.' The visual effect is that it reads as background or texture.)

These are all Mandelbrot zooms, but could just as easily be Julias, and would look identical. There are reasons why you might want the Julia version instead of the Mandelbrot version in some situations, which may be a subject for some later discussion.
To find all these similar spirals, I first went to places in the Mandelbrot set that had the kinds of shapes I wanted to use as background textures, and looked for minibrots. Then I zoomed into those minibrots, always in roughly the same region (part of the main cardioid cusp) and went for second-order minibrot regions on the connecting filaments. The spirals are part of the patterns you get around the second-order minis.
They all needed adjustments to the gradient, because they’re different levels of magnification. Fine-tuning the gradient is something I suspect I will want to talk about a lot more in the future.
The reason the first spiral is a Julia instead of a Mandelbrot is that there aren't any of that exact kind of spiral in the Mandelbrot. All the Mandel-versions have some kind of patterns around them, and if you want one that's perfectly smooth, you have to do a Julia switch from the smooth spot in the main cardioid valley.
* I’m not sure how long it takes to get to this point. I spent a big chunk of one summer doing systematic explorations, and reading everything I could find about other people’s mappings of the set.
[notes: the images in this post are mostly single-layer Mandelbrot zooms with smoothed iteration coloring, generated in Ultra Fractal 5.04. The first one is a Julia instead.]

Today I decided to do a mad scientist experiment.
I really like the “Faulkner” stereo mic technique on piano, in which you have 2 bidirectional microphones (I love ribbons, but other mics can be bidirectional as well, I had great results with large diaphragm condensers before) spaced a certain width apart, panned hard L/R in the mix. I think it has a great mix of “roomy” and “close” in terms of the stereo image. BUT, the mics I had available during my test session today did not include any bidirectional mics, so I decided to get creative.
I put 4 cardioid mics positioned so that each “pair” was pretending to be a bidirectional mic. Each pair had a mic pointed toward the piano and a mic pointed away, and the mic pointed away had the phase inverted during recording. Each pair is panned together hard L/R as well. It’s basically re-inventing two bidirectional microphones the hard way for no real reason.
Anyway, the result actually came out a lot better than I expected it to? These mics aren’t my favorite to use on piano unfortunately (small diaphragm condensers in general aren’t my favorite) but the result was pretty cool. It sort of worked.
Sorry that the first like minute of the video is empty and then the words I am saying are completely lost because I wasn’t loud enough to be picked up by the mics in the recording. I was more or less describing what you see written above. Also, sorry that my piano playing is super basic, this is basically Baby’s First Jazz Chord Progression To Improvise Over that I’ve been learning in a jazz fundamentals course I’m taking for fun.
pls enjoy

best shape? (2D, 3D, and 4D?)
anon i love you. i'm gonna get really nerdy with this one
favorite 2d shape has to be the cardioid
Tumblr media
i like this one for a lot of reasons. i think it's really cool mathematically-speaking that one of the simplest functions you can plot in polar coordinates makes a heart-shaped graph. "simple love"
i think it also has a certain indescribable funny character to it, like if shapes were people this would be a george-from-seinfeld type shape.
favorite 3d shape is probably scutoids
Tumblr media
crystalline structures and tessellations have always been really interesting to me. i think there's something special about a shape you can tile infinitely in all directions. the thing is, most of the standard shapes that can do this are pretty regular and simple. i like scutoids cause they can do this and they're not as simple
i'll use an analogy. cube and hexagonal crystalline structures are vanilla, focus-tested, conventionally attractive, Disney-produced Marvel Movie, andy warhol campbell chicken noodle shit. scutoids, they got that upper ear piercing, the big nose, the certain je ne sais quoi that someone especially attractive has, they're like a Wes Anderson movie if Wes Anderson was less mainstream, they're energetic and yet manage to keep this composition, it's like a gustav klimt or joan miro or van gogh
I also like the Boy's surface cause it's called the Boy's surface. projective planes are pretty cool in their own right of course
my favorite 4d shape doesn't really have a name but it's the spacetime manifold created outside the event horizon of a rotating black hole.
Tumblr media
black holes that rotate create the jet streams you might see associated with black holes, and i think astronomically (besides closely related quasars) these are some of the coolest objects around. regular black holes, they're cool and all, they suck like a vacuum, they do the job and they do it well. rotating black holes, they do all that with an added tornado effect, they suck like how i imagine a 6'4" jk simmons-like guy who does mouth exercises sucks, and the result is spectacular
thanks

a tale of two fountains or maybe tributes to "great men"
spires of caverns and pits and spikes; all in aggregate seem to suggest that it could not all have been constructed with care yet each one constructed with too much care for one to bear. cascading semi-chlorinated water separated and dispersed through multitude arteries abruptly exposed to the world around it, standing alone in a vernal pool tucked between decadence and the machines driving legacies of wealth and influence. despite the drapings of grandeur and the mythos surrounding it, it is not unknowable. any outside perspective would give you something to remember it by, but the spears are not a strong enough defense to hides its insides. this unrelenting, static chaos holds an eye of stability; not precise to guarantee protection, but enough to assure that anyone brave enough to venture within will know some measure of relief from the world that surrounds it and the world that it is.
~
i wander down an exposed stairwell with my prox and a towel, wearing only a linting mask and old swim shorts. the paved surfaces that my journey follows range from smoother cement to asphalt jagged with berries from trees that would never realize their evolutionary purpose. it is not the first time i have decided to sit under the fountain of freedom ahead of me arriving at it, but it is the first in memory that i have been so prepared. normally, a pair of briefs would get soaked while too many things sat on the stairs anticipating the emergence of my dripping form, which would continue until i made it back to my room. but there i was. i have never been particularly good at meditation, and would only claim to have “achieved” a meditative state a few moments in my life, but media depictions of water falls as a particular source for finding some form of releasing outer thoughts; it seems to work well enough, but perhaps i just enjoy the spectacle. this night, there were only a few pairs that sat along the side of water, so not too much of an audience, but enough for me to wonder what they thought as i hung my towel and mask on “Double Sights” and sloshed my way to the tower. normally i might set myself directly under a narrow cascade or in the eye, but this session i remained at a static point in orbit: my legs soaked and my arms quickly coated by innumerable droplets, but my hair only catching the most divergent skydivers, the back of my neck losing its dryness only to sweat and humidity.
it’s a place of security, your conversations drowned out by incessant waters, and in close enough proximity, your own thoughts as well. that was the aim of my venture up campus. i’ve been struggling to fall asleep lately. my body will be exhausted from interactions and activities (walking to class? inconceivable) enough that i give up on work earlier in the night and pray that an earlier sleep will restore some greater stamina. the mind however is plagued with sensations of the time that i’m wasting THERE ARE ONLY 22 WEEKS OF SCHOOL LEFT AND YOU’RE SITTING IN YOUR FUCKING ROOM WHAT HAPPENED TO THE YOU THIS SUMMER WHO WAS READY TO SEE PEOPLE AND LIVE AGAIN, the regrets i am well beyond amending THIS IS JUST HOW YOU WERE FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING WITH YOUR IVY LEAGUE TRANSCRIPT, and other anxieties I AM FAILING ALREADY. I AM INDEED TAKING IT ALL FOR GRANTED, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT PRINCETON OPINION PERSON? I AM DISAPPOINTING MY FRIENDS AND EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER INVESTED CAUSE OR CONCERN IN MY SUCCESS AND WELL-BEING. of course, the mind is of body as well, and these permeate through the rest of me. i haven’t felt health for a while THOUGH I’M SURE THAT’S JUST THE COVID THAT I’VE DEFINITELY CONTRACTED AND SPREAD TO MY LOVED ONES or the scattered eating and sleeping schedule compounding into no full restoration. most of the time, this leads to a shirtless run on the towpath (if i’m not doing school work, i might as well perfect this bag of bones), but Ida has eroded many segments to the bottom of the canal, so darker nights may not be the best for it AND MY VISION SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE EVERY DAY, SO IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THE BODY SURRENDERS ANY SHRED OF WORTH ENTIRELY.
but that night was not humid, and chilly waters woke me to ensure i was fully experiencing my slate slowly being washed away. worries seem to just slip away from me, like a patagonia in any of the clubs’ coat rooms. i feel the effortless mind of my body switch on the ignition, turning all engines to ensure that i freezen’t in the water, and i can stretch each muscle individually as i am asked to confront the prospect of how this form is treated. and i can breathe again, full and deep, and i feel like i am able to get up and face the world as it comes once more.
~
Scudder Plaza may be the most relaxing spot on campus: you can catch the cooling spray from James FitzGerald’s monumental sculpture, Fountain of Freedom, or be soothed by the sounds of its cascading water. At twenty-three feet high, Fountain of Freedom is one of the largest cast bronze sculptures in the U.S. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the artist’s native Pacific Northwest, the grooves, channels, and spires of the six-ton sculpture—reminiscent of naturally eroded forms—are meant to symbolize Woodrow Wilson’s aspirations and frustrations. … Seven hundred gallons of water are recirculated through the fountain each minute and are sprayed through an intricate system of fifty major pressure valves and more than 1,000 pin-hold jets. (x)

but tower 4 is some distance from those 4 towers. and without jets pushing them back, many things come crawling back. i am looking down to the basement cafe with its lights out, wondering if the people coming my way were laughing at my relative under-dress, when i decide that i cannot go home yet. i complete another barefoot walk across campus, and lay my towel down as a seat at my penultimate resting place.
~
its silhouette a vague enough [cardioid of sorts] to prevent any association based on shape alone, your expectations may be higher than what you need. it is a piece of furniture in name and in relativity to form, something regarded briefly in the minds’ eye and then passed by just as quickly. its flows ooze at a steady rate, in synch such that it never appears to be moving at all; the only proof that it is, really, is the shading below coming from beyond the light and the drippings at its bottom hidden from view. those surface shimmers make a soft sound, but on touch simply flow between the fingertips. a single indentation on the surface has received a few stones of the many that live below its form, placed there by hands other than its creator; certainly, they gave their vision the precise amount of care and intent required to manifest it. an illusion that what it emits has eroded it over many years to a smooth shape, but with the truth that it is still very young and remains solid within.
~
it would not feel quite right to sit atop einstein’s table, so i sit on the concrete next to the square of rocks. even with consistent eye contact, its subtle streaming does little to shield spectators from the world outside. a car driving by listening to top hits from summers past, a few pedestrians making their pilgrimage for late night snacks; every little itch on the surface of my skin, and of course, bare exposure to every THIS and THAT in a state of overwhelming stillness. but in all, it comes to pass, and my brain is left backtracking to the overwhelming stillness i have known in recent months. i am nostalgic for my University Mandated Quarantine Walks, particularly one alone in the mountain lakes preserve after my first snow back. i am nostalgic for early autumn days looking at the sun reflected off a pond. i am nostalgic for the waiting to find out where i’d spend my junior year, the waiting to receive messages and letters from friends. restless simplicity, anticipation for better things that, well, i guess are supposed to be the present. it doesn’t really feel that way now. as SENTIMENTS have alluded to, i am struggling to make it through right now. instead of a senior year that serves as the culmination of all that came before, i feel instead trapped in shitty replays of the past 3 years. like a script composed of false cognates, it feels like i understand what is happening right now and it makes no sense.
~
Near the earthwork is “Einstein’s Table,” made of jet mist granite and inspired by Albert Einstein’s theory on black holes. Lin noted that the theory was validated last year during the creation of the table. Outer space and constellations were a source of inspiration for both projects, she said.
During the hourlong conversation, Lin shared details of her process from start to finish, which included many adjustments along the way. “With every artwork there might be six to eight models,” she said. “I’m always teaching myself about the site, so that I’m preparing myself for what it’s going to be like to be on site.” (x)
~
but i think i am mostly wondering about how similarly others are feeling. it appears to me that my peers are sliding right back into the chaos of the now, festive in the face of it all and doing everything i tell myself i should be doing right now. do i come off that way to them? does anyone really know how to express these feelings 100 leagues below the surface, or is it just me? what feels true to me, and what leads me to rise from my seat next to the table and return home, is that i must continue. there is little option now but to follow through on this all until the end of the line, whenever it may come; maybe that comes easier for some people now, but i think i’ll make it eventually. i am not entirely sad and i am not entirely happy, but i am here. i think i want to help people despite not being perfect at it, and i am here. all things for granted or not, i am here. i will continue to get cold under one monument and never deny the temptation to touch another passing by, because i know those are things i like to think. i hope you know you can talk to me always.

MATH POSITIVITY cause its been a while
We started our new unit on polar coordinates and the fact that you can graph on a circle is so cool to me and using desmos for it is so nice cause the circles are really cool and idk this unit seems fun because apparently WE CAN GRAPH ON CIRCLES AND THEN CHANGE THEM INTO NORMAL GRAPHING POINTS OR CHANGE NORMAL GRAPHING POINTS INTO POLAR COORDINATE POINTS and yeah.
Polar coordinates are just cool.
Ah yes!! Polar coordinates are very cool!! You can graph cardioids and they look like hearts and it's so happy and fun 💞
Thank you so much for the math positivity I am always so happy to hear about it and I hope you enjoy the rest of the unit!!!
