What would Carla and Claire's relationship be like in Modern AU? 👀

Modern Claire and Carla

A lot healthier than canon, I'll tell you that 😭 I'll lay some background about modern! Claire first and I hope you enjoy! ❤️

How They Met:

They met at art school. Saeclus definitely has Carla involved in his passion for painting, and Claire's adoptive family expects a lot from her as a gifted actress.

They didn't share a class or anything, they just happened to meet during an event where the actors were tasked with coming up with a pose with a word given to them. The painters would then draw them in that pose.

Carla and Claire were paired up, and since Claire was instantly interested in him, she opened up the conversation and managed to hook him on just enough to have him meet her properly.

So they kind of talked and even laughed a few times before their time was up. They didn't exchange phone number though, that came a few weeks later.

Claire seemed to accidentally bump into Carla everywhere she went, and neither of them was stupid enough to think it was a coincidence. A few more conversations passed and Claire finally got his number. And he got hers.

How They Got Closer:

They often had conversations at school and even after school at times. Carla went to these fancy ass plays that Claire did work at as part of an after school project so she could earn money and move out faster.

Naturally, they got to see each other at those events too, and that's really how they just started spending time together without a need for a reason.

Sounds crazy but Carla actually didn't mind going out in places to meet her as long as she's model for most of his drawings. There weren't a lot of women he trusted around himself, much less ones who'd expertly get into a mood and a pose.

He told himself that he was just humoring her because of this, and fooled himself into thinking that it was just a relationship of mutual benefit. Once all thatwas over, they'd be over.

Well he was wrong, and even after he'd filled a whole sketchbook with portraits and fullbodies of her in different angles, clothes and hairstyles, he still wanted to see her everyday.

They never really asked each other out, just slowly progressed into "going out" together. Neither of them really calls it dating, but if someone asks if they're single, they'll both deny.

General Dynamic:

They are that one couple in high school and university who are not really together but are serious about each other.

Claire is more in tune with society than Carla, and is generally more talkative, so she does most of the talking. She's also the one to acknowledge other average human beings instead of pretending to not notice them like Carla does.

Carla is not big into PDA, but he will walk arm in arm with Claire at every event they attend because he wants everyone to know she's taken. And if someone so much as sends a longing gaze her way, he's going to give them the death glare of their life until they back off.

Claire doesn't shy away from more physical and verbal affection though, and if Carla acts too stiff and uptight, she'll start calling him "husband-to-be" which only serves as a trigger for Carla to glare at her and for her to giggle about it.

Generally, Claire is much more affectionate than Carla, especially when they're around other people. He'd be more open to her affection when they're on their own, and it's these little moments that keep her around.

Carla is very protective of Claire, especially when it comes to her family. And while Claire can handle herself, she finds it sweet that he looks after her in his own way and lets him defend her.

They rarely fight because Claire always keeps things from escalating that far. Though whenever Claire does get heated about something and they do fight, Carla usually makes up afterwards, despite his pride.

Much healthier than their canon selves, I'm proud of you sweeties.

What would you say are good criticisms the way Leon and Ada are written?

criticism of leon's writing

this is more of an overarching reason but a lot of the resident evil stories/games are extremely poorly written (take a look at the movies. they're all the same kind of story, nothing is really achieved and nothing is of stake. everything is the same before and after the thing that happened. they're just things that are told in a chronical order. they don't necessarily affect anything and don't change anything) if you remove one of them, nothing changes in the overall story.

the lack of consistency of leon written between all iterations. we already have several "retellings" of re2, the og timeline, the remake timeline, and the cgi films are somehow all supposed to be connected but also not?

one of the main criticisms i had actually was leon's characterization in re4r. they went with a much gritty version of leon, which MAKES SENSE, but it makes it harder for this version of leon to fit with the other versions of leon. the jump between vendetta -> death island leon, which is SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME LEON, has such a jump in characterization.

SURE leon is depressed in vendetta, but we rarely get to see the transitional changes between these instances. so we rarely get to see HOW he heals. (it's ada's pussy curing his alcoholism also aeon child cause DI leon is 100% a father)

the change from re2 leon to re4 leon is probably the change that makes the most sense. it's explained, and there's REASONS to why his characterization has changed from bright eyed rookie cop to trained agent.

BUT with the re4r characterization, i have even MORE problems with it since re4 leon already had a vast change between then and then damnation -> re6 leon

but now we have no idea how re4r leon would change to ID Leon, which is also SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME LEON. HOW IS HE DIFFERENT AGAIN.

and furthermore, because of the various voice actors and lack of consistency, we have even more versions of leon that don't make it seem like it's the same person.

he's either fucking depressed or TOTALLY FINE, and it's JARRING AF to be slapped between the two.

i wish there was more consistency between the leon versions, and also just more thoughtful writing. at least with the games we have more of his "cringe one liners," but also exposition that can show how he's feeling. with the movies it seems like it's just "ZERO, YOU WANTED TO KNOW HOW MANY THERE WERE" "GONNA ADD TOUR GUIDE TO MY RESUME" AND THERE'S NO SUBSTANCE.

in writing (fanon)

leon's either written as a dom (which makes me cringe) or abusive (which makes me mad) or that he hates ada (which is just canonically untrue.) men who also just hate ada, i see as a red flag.

men who would rather ship leon with claire (a girl who DOES NOT LIKE LEON THAT WAY) as opposed to Ada who canonically cares/would do anything for leon, but is flawed, shows me that you just want the idea of a woman.

this is actually why i stopped reading leon x reader fics after re4r releasing. because leon's characterization in fics were always kind of poor, but after re4r released, his writing was just not even leon anymore. it was just a way to write your fantasies for your self inserts. (WHICH IS FINE, it's just not for me anymore)

i'd rather read leon x ada fics as they tend to have more substance than just porn

criticism of ada's writing

because of the lack of upbringing/backstory for ada, it's hard to tell where she lays morally.

the extreme changes between damnation ada -> re6 ada is pretty vast. the ending scene of her "adding more criminal charges to her name" to saving sherry's, jakes, helena's, Leon's and random civilians lives makes it weird. and then wanting to clear her name because of carla makes it odd

like YES it makes sense, but we STILL don't really know what/why ada does what she does.

i've always preferred re6 ada because we can actually play more of her campaign and have it outside of just being about leon as opposed to separate ways which is just "ada saving leon," campaign (i usually prefer game ada as opposed to movie ada but that's also because of the limitations of film as opposed to game)

re6 ada we see more of her feelings, thoughts, motivations, and it just seems to explore more of her. i just wish we had more of that.

in damnation we have a very flirty, snarky, double crossing ada, which ALSO MAKES SENSE, but i wish we had more clear motivations for her. (does she fuck over another person because she just wants to?)

ada has always been seen as morally grey, leaning towards more good towards the later of the series for her.

capcom please bring back mother, we haven't seen her since 2012. fuck you capcom, i'm in your walls

again, maybe i just prefer aeon specifically with more substance.

the people who shit on lily gao for wanting to break the stereotypes of what ada wong was written to be really shows that you never cared about ada other than the fact that she was a sexy woman.

ngl it's DISGUSTING to me that people thought that lily wanting to characterize ada as MORE THAN JUST A SEX SYMBOL SHOWS ME WHAT YOU ONLY WANTED FROM ADA.

we KNOW that ada can be kind, gentle AND STRONG. she's always been more than just sexy and devious. she's more than a stereotype.

and since re6 ada had always been a bit more of the soft side to me, i'd love to see lily take on the role of re6r ada if they do make it.

the fact that ada is supposed to be mysterious is old, and i want to know more about her already

in writing (fanon)

i've been very vocal about the character assassination and blatant mischaracterization of ada in fanfic.

if you wanna write leon x reader self inserts, DO IT. just LEAVE ADA OUT OF IT. the fact that you need to project your insecurities/flaws onto ada is just sad and pathetic.

it's lazy writing to just have reader be a perfect girl and then have ada as the foil to it all.

i don't mind leon x readers that write ada canonically. especially with leon still having feelings for ada. THOSE ARE FINE IMO

also the whole madonna whore complex is STRONG with how yall think/write about ada.

ada has ALWAYS cared about leon, she's also just more willing to hurt his feelings than letting him get physically hurt. she'd do anything to keep him safe, even if she can't keep herself safe in his heart.

the people who write that ada ALWAYS uses/manipulates Leon and then gets him killed, just don't know how to write imo. it's LAZY writing.

anyways. i hate how people write ada in leon x readers, and that's the main reason why i stopped reading them

tl;dr the writing of resident evil has always been kind of poor/repetitive and also inconsistent. the writing of leon and ada (in fics) are mischaracterized so much, i stopped reading a lot of them (not including au's. au's can be goofy af, that's fine.)

My favorite storyline / moment:

1. In season 1 when Ian visits Mickey in jail. “Say that again and I rip your tongue out of your head” There were so many perfect Gallavich moments but that was the first one which catched me! 

2.  When Mark told Lexie about their future and that they were meant to bes while Lexie was dying. It was so fucking sad and unfair but so emotional.

3. Every quote from the  Phil's- Osophy

4. Carla and Samuels Macarrones Scene

5. When Wade and Zoe finally got together in the night George wanted to marry Lemon. The sexual tension was fucking incredible and Wade was so fucking hot.

6. When Clove died and screams Cato’s name and Cato came too late and only found her body and cried. (this scene ist only from the book). But I liked the story of Haymitch’s games, too. His alliance with Maysilee. The idea of him being a hot and smart young guy that couldn’t handle the memory of the games and the loss of his loved ones is so emotional and sad.

A storyline that never should have been written:

1. The break up of Ian and Mickey in season 5 only because of Ians mental health. Mickey tried so much to help Ian and Ian blamed Mickey without any reason. I was so furious.

2. Alex leaving Jo for Izzie and Izzie having kids from Alex sperm ???? This was a fucking joke. Yeah, hated the last Alex and Izzie break up and I would have loved seeing them stay together and grow as persons and lovers. I rooted so much for them. There was so much potential and I have to admit I prayed for her coming back and saving the relationship. Even years after her exit because of all the open questions but I never thought they would do something so bad like this. Him leaving Jo and all his life / friends [MEREDITH] only with a letter ? That has nothing to do with the Alex Karev he had become. It destroys his whole character development. I wanted Izzie back not Alex leave.

3. All scenes Jay disrespects Mitchell and Mitchells sexuality. Yeah you can mention this but sometimes it’s presented as funny and there are many stupid cliches. It’s sad even if it’s only a sitcom.

4. Carlas Dad causing Christians injuries so that he can’t talk about Polos fault. That was too sick.

5. Zoe's relationship with Joel. Not surprising. I kind of liked Joel but what the fuck? There was a love triangle with George why another one?

6. The way Katniss acted in Mockingjay. First of all she was a kid, why the fuck did she think she could make her own thing and kill snow without any plan? And it's written as if she is a war hero and not an abused kid. On the other side I hated how she treated Peeta and she is so self-pity, it's cruel.

When I say I disliked (not hate, disliked) OG Ashley Graham, it’s not because she’s not Jill Valentine or Claire Redfield. It’s not because she’s kidnapped by a cult. And it’s not because she’s a woman. I also disliked OG Luis Serra and didn’t care about him at all, so it’s not a gender thing. Honestly, anyone who hates a character because of their gender do not have the best takes.

I don’t even despise OG Ashley because there are elements I do like about her. I like the fact that she can wear armor so that she’s not vulnerable to attacks. I may have sucked at the game at times, but I figured out ways to have her stand in an area away from danger or have her hide so that I don’t accidentally fail the mission or shoot her by mistake. Plus I was able to take advantage of the fact that the Ganados move so slowly and don’t actually dodge shooting attacks so that I am shooting them instead of Ashley. The shooting her by mistake one only happened in the Remake for me when I’m trying to save her from being kidnapped by a Ganado since I have the worst aim ever.

I also put myself in both versions of Ashley’s shoes, because she is a woman who was kidnapped, and that alone is a terrifying fear, and I would definitely be like Ashley in this situation. And she is one of the more unproblematic characters in the franchise (because there are certain characters in the CGI movies and in other RE games that are far worse than Ashley).

I disliked OG Ashley because she was a caricature of the damsel in distress character, her voice despite being voice by the same woman who was Sandy Cheeks was also irritating to listen to. I also hated that scene in the castle where she coughed up blood and when Leon was asking if she was alright, she responded by yelling at him to leave her alone and shoving him away and running right into a very obvious trap. Like I said, caricature of a damsel in distress.

The only element I hate about Ashley isn’t actually related to her character, rather it’s related to how the weird side of the RE fandom infantilizes her, which I’m sick and tired of seeing every time I want to see any kind of content related to her or the Leon x Ashley ship. She is TWENTY years old and in college. She is a whole ass woman. More importantly, she ain’t real.

And it’s not just OG Ashley I disliked. OG Luis is also someone I disliked because again, a caricature of a Spaniard and the generic mysterious man who we still didn’t get clear answers as to why he’s helping two strangers or why he’s even turning his back on Los Illuminados. Not to mention the stereotypical way he tries flirting with Ada Wong. His death was also pointless in the original, because I never cared about him nor did I feel sad.

Thankfully the remake changed these two. But I think that’s mainly because the Remake is a soft reboot of RE and that series is going in a different direction.

Do NOT get any of this post twisted. Ashley Graham and Luis Serra in the original RE4 are not characters that I actively hated.

The only RE Characters I actively do hate are Simmons, Glenn Arias, Carla Radames, That one senator guy from Degeneration who I’m not even going to bother looking up because he was annoying, and that one villain from Degeneration who I am also not going to bother looking up because he sucks.

TLDR: I dislike both Original Ashley and Original Luis because they were generic caricatures, that definitely benefitted the most from the remake, and Simmons, Arias, Carla, the Senator of Degeneration, and the Villain from Degeneration are characters I actually do hate.

She'll Accompany Me

The ballroom was filled with nobles from all across the land. The King was generous after all, or so had he said. The man who'd made her life misery ever since she'd obtained the body, and beauty, of a woman.

As a result, she trusted those words very little. Or not at all.

When told about the party, she had little reason to decline the offer. The worst that could happen would be another noblewoman commenting on her mother. The last one sure hadn't held back.

'A whore, like the mother' she'd called her. Too bad with that red stain of wine and the poor mix of it's scent with her perfume, she was the one looking like a whore on her way back home, shouting insults and further plummetting whatever dignity she once possessed.

The memory still brings a smile to her face. Young as she is, Lucrecia is anything but naive. She knows what people view her as, so instead of cowering in fear of them because of that, she'll use it to her advantage. Even wear it like armor.

Though there are moments when she wishes for a more refined status, and a less debated birth. Moments such as now - as the Crown Prince, Carla, and his brother Shin enter the ball.

Her eyes remained on the Princes - curious and sharp, even if she wasn't meant to be staring directly into Roylaty's eyes - and she couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to have a title like that. Or a loving mother. Or any claim to anything and anyone.

It must be nice, she thought, being somebody's someone.

Her eyes then wandered to where her 'caretaker' should be, chatting away with old generals and pretty ladies. Typical of him - disgusting in how vain and shallow he is. "Old fool. He's beyond all hopes of mercy or grace."

Though when she'd turned to look at the Crown Prince, she did not expect to find his gaze right back on her. For what felt like an eternity, she held his gaze - confused and somewhat flattered. That is, until she remembered that it's 'insolent' to gaze back at a Royal without direct permission.

Cursing her own wit, she looked away - right, down, anywhere else - and instead tried to busy herself with getting another glass of wine. In a quick sip, she had emptied her current glass - feeling a little tipsy as a result - and walked off to the nearby table.

Right before her hand could touch the cold solace of the crystal, another one - gloved with long, slender fingers - took a hold of it. Her narrowed eyes looked up to glare, but froze with surprise when they met those same golden irises from before. Some strands of long white hair, the ends of which were bloody red, fell over his shoulder pads, and there was no mistaking the striking resemblance to the Queen.

It was him. The Crown Prince.

Quickly, she lowered her gaze as she lowered her head, and then bent her knees - placing one foot back, using her hands to pull up the sides of her long gown's skirt. She spoke in a hushed tone now, as even in her frizzly state of mind, she knew that he wasn't to be messed with. "Your Highness."

He only nodded in mild acknowledgement, allowing her to stand back at her full height. "I don't suppose you've introduced yourself to me before. What is your name?"

Straight to the point. He didn't offer flattery, and hated it when it was offered to him. No beating around the bush, no pretending to be nice and different. A small smile formed on her lips with no intention of going away.

"My name is Lucrecia Etrama, Your Highness."

"Are you with your family, Lady Lucrecia?"

"My father is here with me. He is socializing with other Ladies now." The words left a bitter taste in her mouth as she spoke them. What father, what socializing- it was all similar to a cruel joke.

"I see." He didn't seem to buy that, but he probably didn't care enough to pry more. The glass was still in his hand, the liquid within untouched. Did he only reach for it so he'd have an excuse to speak with her?

No. That was ridiculous. He is the Prince, she is the bastard. If anything, she should be the one hunting an opportunity to speak to him. And it all angered her greatly. Why couldn't she look up to his face, keep his gaze, and talk to him the way she wanted to?

"Lucrecia, step back." He was the last thing she needed right now, but her eyes turned to him nonetheless, the look in them of a cold hatred. Her face all but spoke 'get lost', and this wasn't lost on the observant young man he'd been speaking to before.

"Ah, Your Highness!" He quickly bowed upon taking notice of the pale haired male, and he spared him even less of a nod than he had to her. "I apologize for any tactless behavior she might have shown! Recia is new to high society, she has much to learn." Blatant lie, the fakeness of it nauseating her. Just like everything else about him.

"There's no need. She behaved as she should have." Carla's voice didn't shake or waver, nor did he take long to speak back those words. He put the glass away then, not even sipping a little from it.

"Surely not!" Gosh, she wished he would just shut up now. "If she had, she wouldn't be so close to the center of the ballroom."

"She's here because I willed it. She'll accompany me for the first dance."

Her head almost snapped back in shock, and yet... Instead, she let her lips curl further as she gave her 'father' a quietly mocking smile, feigning sweet innocence. He didn't fall for it, but he couldn't do anything either. "A-ah, I see. Then excuse me for halting your path sir, I simply didn't-"

"You are excused." He didn't waste any time in between those words and reaching for Lucrecia's hand, leading her further into the center and away from that man, not even letting him finish his sentence. She didn't seem even mildly bothered, if anything she was pleased.

Serves him right, that creep deserves no respect.

Besides that, her slightly tipsy self, and the fact that she was dancing with the most beautiful man in the room, you could visibly see that Lucrecia was in her best mood and on her best beahvior.

The first minute passed silently, allowing for whispers to spring up about them. Some complimented their dance, others looked to find a fault to no avail, and some remarked on how scandalous it was that the Crown Prince chose to dance with the adopted daughter of a low ranking Viscount.

"Pay them no mind." He finally said, commanding all of Lucrecia's attention back to himself. "You should only focus on me."

"I am, Your Highness, you aren't someone who can be ignored." She didn't lie nor force the words out, under the light of the chandeliers, with small shadows cast over his face and his eyes illuminated, Carla looked breathtaking enough to break all of the women's hearts.

"That wasn't the tone you used with your father."

"Is the difference so apparent? I'm ashamed if so, I supposed I was a good actress."

His brow went up slightly at that, his eyes holding a hint of amusement in them. "You won't deny it?"

She smiled again, fully this time, with all hints of the facade washing from her face for barely a moment. And for that time, she let him see something in her. Something that would haunt him, even if he tried to forget.

"It's best to be sincere with clever men, Your Highness."

Why I started watching it: Back in 2015 I was looking for a show to watch and at that time, Scrubs was still on Netflix and my parents had watched it when it was originally airing and I vividly remembered the night My Musical (6x06) aired and I just decided to give it a shot! And 8 years later, here we are 😅

Claire and Jack seem like they could be fun, but I'll be honest and say that I skipped the second half of a lot of season 5 episodes bc I was missing Ben so much, so I still don't really know much about Jack 😬

Least favourite character: Out of the main cast, Max, but listen!! I still love Max, especially when it comes to his and Mike's friend/partnership! Max just has a lot of really bad takes and pisses me off a fair amount lol

Least favourite ship: Honestly any other ships that involve Ben or Mike, I think. And not in like a "fuck you, how dare you" way, just like an "I don't get it, but you do you" way if that makes sense.

Reason why I watch it: For the characters 😭 I'm so ridiculously attached to Mike and Ben of course, but also Paul and Phil and Adam and Cragen (Captain Dad) and sometimes Lennie if he's not on my nerves that day (aka when I'm not thinking about Exiled too much)

Why I started watching it: Because SOMEONE decided to ruin my life @adventurouswallflower and it only took her a goddamn month to wear me down and get me to start watching it and I'm apparently just doomed to fall in love with 20+ year old TV shows with dead fandoms 🙃

My Favorite Cooking YouTube Channels

It rained all weekend and I was a bit low energy (still went rock climbing both days though), so I initially had no idea what to write about this week. I watched a number of cooking videos this weekend, so thought I’d share some of my favorite YouTube cooking channels. While I enjoy both watching cooking videos and actually cooking, I very rarely actually cook recipes from cooking videos. While I’m likely inspired and influenced to some extent, for me it’s really just a form of entertainment. It’s a bit old, but you may also be interested in my post about YouTube Channels for 2021.

I was first introduced to Claire a few years back through her Bon Appétit series Gourmet Makes. During each episode she would try to recreate a different iconic packaged food. While that series ended a long time ago, I do rewatch episodes from time to time and enjoy watching Claire on her channel. As mentioned in the intro, I primarily watch cooking shows for pure entertainment; however, I have actually used one of Claire’s recipes. Specifically, the last two Thanksgivings, I’ve made her apple crumble pie to great success. With Claire’s background in pastry and cookbook entitled Dessert Person, her channel features a number of desserts. While I don’t have a huge sweet tooth, I tend to prefer baking to cooking so it’s fun to have this more baking focused channel. With that said, nowadays I never actually bake as I don’t have the need or equipment to do so. 

Carla Lalli Music

Like with Claire, I was first introduced to Carla through Bon Appétit. I like Carla’s channel because it’s amusing and she makes delicious looking pasta dishes. While I haven’t made any of the recipes from her channel, I have made her fettuccine alfredo from an old Bon Appétit video. It’s funny though, because I literally made her alfredo last night and she literally just posted a video with an optimized alfredo sauce today. Thus, I’ll need to try out the new version soon to compare!

Brian Lagerstrom 

I discovered Brian’s channel sometime last year and was immediately hooked. He brings in knowledge and techniques from his experience working in professional kitchens and clearly puts a lot into his recipe development. Despite not yet trying any of his recipes, I feel pretty confident that they’d all turn out great. While very enjoyable to watch, his videos are also packed with information.

Ethan Chlebowski

In addition to recipe and food challenge videos, Ethan’s creates some incredible longer form deep dive videos. I’d watched Ethan’s videos from time to time, but only more recently actually subscribed and explored his catalog of older videos. 

Pro Home Cooks

I actually just subscribed to this channel today because I noticed that I’d watched and enjoyed most of the recent videos. As the name suggests, this channel is focused on leaving up as a home cook. While I don’t have a garden here, it’s cool to see how many of the ingredients the host Mike sources from his own garden. 

America's Test Kitchen

While I love America’s Test Kitchen, I only watch a handful of their videos and subsequently haven’t subscribed. However, looking at their video page I really am considering subscribing as all the videos look great. The one series that I watch religiously is What's Eating Dan? with Dan Souza. I also love Gear Heads, which is a show about the best cooking equipment. Recently I’ve also been enjoying Techniquely with Lan Lam and honestly need to go back and watch all of the episodes. 

Epicurious

This is another channel that I enjoy, but don’t actually subscribe to because the upload frequency is just too high and I don’t/wouldn’t watch all of the videos. My favorite series is 4 Levels in which three chefs of varying cooking abilities (amateur, home cook, and expert) all cook the same dish. Each episode concludes with a food scientist (level four) discussing the decisions each chef made from a food science perspective. I haven’t watched it recently, but another cool series is Pro Chef vs. Home Cook in which “expert chefs swap recipes and ingredients with adventurous home cooks.”

NYT Cooking

This is yet another channel that I don’t subscribe to but enjoy videos from. In addition to her individual YoutTube channel, Claire Saffitz has a mini series on NYT Cooking called Try This at Home. Another fun series on NYT Cooking is Sohla El-Waylly’s Mystery Menu. Other chefs I enjoy watching on NYT Cooking include Melissa Clark and Eric Kim. While I have cooked a number of Melissa’s recipes (and have had great success with them), for the most part I’ve discovered her recipes (and watched her videos) from the actual NYT Cooking website and not their YouTube channel.
