temperate rainforests are cool (and wet, it's their thing)

I'm writing about temperate rainforests today, so it's time for another #pictfact ! Well, not a PICT fact but a ANCIENT WOODLAND FACT. Scotland (and most of Britain) used to be covered in cool, damp, twisting rainforests. Some small forets still exist, but they're very rare now.

These rainforests are characterised by their relatively consistent rainfall and mild temperatures year-round. These damp conditions help thousands of species of mosses and lichens flourish, each one as ancient as the forest itself.

These rainforests are super biodiverse. But three different trees can shape and change what lives inside; the Scots Pine, Western Oak or Atlantic Hazelwood. Insects, animals, fungi and plants have adapted to live with these different trees, even basing their lifecycles on them.

i'm reading more and more about waterdeep, and i found mention of this famous alleyway in volo's waterdeep enchiridion:

and i couldn't help but think of this:

i wouldn't think it unlikely that gale may have gone through here, with his parents perhaps - his mother morena and the father, who would abandon them - looking to buy fresh meat to prepare a delicious meal. all those recipes gale would later learn.

i can see a much, much younger gale spotting a little stray kitten and begging for it to come home with them, only to be denied.

with a heart so big he cries over a burned rose bush, little gale would definitely cry over little kittens without homes.

Jet-black Polyhedral Seal of The Western Wei General

This multi-faceted jet seal of the Western Wei dynasty, belonged to the famous General Dugu Xin (獨孤信). It has 8 edges and 26 sides: 18 square and 8 triangular ones. It is the ancient polyhedral seal with the largest number of facets.

Among them, 14 sides are engraved with inscriptions. The inscriptions range from one-character to five-character. The functionality is differentiated, including the use in official letters, orders, document labeling, etc.

The jet, a composite organic gem, from which the seal is carved, is known in China as “coal jade” (煤玉).

The total height of the object is 4.5 cm, the width is 4.35 cm, and the weight is 75.7 g.

The seal was accidentally discovered in 1981 by Song Qing, a student from Xunyang county (旬陽縣), Ankang, Shaanxi. While returning home from school, he picked up a weird object in the gravel on the roadside, which aroused his curiosity with its bizarre shape. Song Qing had no idea what it was. Having examined the inscriptions at home, he gave the find for examination to the local archaeological museum, where the artifact was considered not of particular cultural value.

The seal vegetated on the outskirts of the local exposition for another decade, until it was revealed and recognized by a prominent researcher Wang Hanzhang (王翰章) from the Xi'an Institute of Literature and History. On display in Shaanxi History Museum (陝西曆史博物館).
