I know many of us can relate when I say HLVRAI was the gateway that brought me into this amazing fanbase. I don't think I would have gotten through the last few years as sane had it not been for the amazing, niche, underrated productions of RTVS. I remember being enamored instantly when watching the commentary streams, then RE-WATCHING them again and again, memorizing everyones names, stealing their jokes, and thinking "hmm, I wonder what other vods I could watch of theirs?"

Over 2 years later and I now tell my friends I've more than surpassed probably 200 hours worth of vod watching of RTVS. I feel like I've found "my celebrities," the people I feel confident I'll never get bored of for years to come. I barely catch their livestreams due to shitty internet, but I always aspire for the day I can. Even with shitty internet I'll find excuses to catch that stream on the 16th.

I'm very excited for HLVRAI2 or whatever it entails. Its going to be huge. We've got a big storm coming... and I fucking love storms.

 Ready. He was never ready. 

Slowly, almost achingly, his feet dragging across the hardwood floor. Mud, blood and anger tangled in his hair, skin and nails. Death, hurt and suffering walked silently by his side all his life, but he was never ready. Joseph, Sarah, James. Names, voices and faces lay deep in his flesh, his mind and his soul, carved, turned to scars red, white and angry. Worry, loss and remorse hard and heavy on bony shoulders and thin skin, hefty and haunting on a heaving broad chest. He was never ready. 

 But he tried.

Clenched his jaw, shielded his heart, locked and buried the pain deep in his bones, covered it in stars and stripes, red, white and blue. The golden boy, the mighty hero, the nation's savior. Filled his wounds and bruises with mighty serums and miracle cures. But it all found a way back, crawled in, poured out of his pores, the tears in hard Kevlar, the tears in his eyes. Ηe tried. To live, to let go, to go on, to just be. 

 A good boy for his mother's affection, a brave pal for his friend's admiration, a heroic figure for the love of a nation. 

 "...are you ready?"

Ready. He was never ready. 

Stealth suit peeling painfully off his skin, hurt and ache clawed on the surface, screams and pleas meshed with ropes of fabric, rigid, hard, resistant. His body is weak, his mind broken, soul shredded. A voice once commanding now strangled and small, your voice still too distant to carry him home. A storm in his eyes he thought would never be tamed, a darkness still humming so close to his ears. His ma’ always told him, coated with love “careful my boy, the good ones always seem to break.”

But he tried.

Carved a body from marble, white, solid and pure. The world on his shoulders, a star on his chest, honored, battered, faded and bruised. Thick hair on his jaw to hold all the pain, the tears, the ashes, the darkness, the faults. A man holding scales, a man holding reigns, a captain, a leader, a nomad, a rebel. A man to protect, to serve and to shield, a man strong enough to rearrange mighty plans. Ηe tried. To live, to let go, to go on, to just be. 

 An abandoned boy, a grieving friend, a fallen hero. 

 “Honey, are you ready?”

 As your melody soars, he knows this is home. He's drawn to your voice, his senses awake, pulls the whole earth around him and rests in your arms. He leans on your shoulder, he leans in your touch, like an atlas still standing to hold all your love. Florists taking part in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Chelsea in Bloom & Chelsea Fringe 2018

This coming Monday and Tuesday, I’ll be at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and I’m so looking forward to seeing all the installations, exhibits and gardens! Here are details of just some of florists who are involved in this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Chelsea in Bloom and Chelsea Fringe.

THE RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Installations

Grace & Thorn are decorating the Bull Ring Gate with masses of brightly coloured geranium plants from The Gardening Club.

Lucy, The Flower Hunter, will be celebrating the English landscape with an installation featuring planting design and floristry.

La Famille are creating the tunnel installation connecting Main Avenue and Ranelagh Gardens.

A flower frame/arch is being created by The Flower Appreciation Society for the late night event on Friday.

Exhibits in the Great Pavilion

Flowers from the Farm, a not-for-profit co-operative of British flower growers will be exhibiting for the first time at the show. Full details can be found in this article.

Floral Fundamentals’ UNITY exhibit will showcase the creative skills of Europe’s greatest floral designers in their representation of the stages of bulb production, from growth through to display.

A floral feast will be served up by the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) with an imaginative flower and foliage display depicting the four seasons.

Marks & Spencer‘s exhibit will reflect a British Flower Festival and if inspired by the physical structures and sense of place of traditional flower and produce markets.

CHELSEA IN BLOOM

This year’s theme is ‘Summer of Love’, inspired by the Royal Wedding and the 60s/70s cultural revolution.

All for Love are creating the main Chelsea in Bloom installations in Sloane Square, Pavilion Road and Sloane Street. Plus they’ll be creating an installation for Dermalogica.

Wildabout are creating the Chelsea in Bloom installations for Kiehls, Hackett, Oliver Peoples and Boutique 1.

The Flower Appreciation Society are conducting a demo and talk for Monica Vinader.

CHELSEA FRINGE

‘Geraniums at the Door’ celebrates the iconic entrance of the Zetter Townhouse in Clerkenwell. Co-designed by award winning garden designers, Claudia de Yong and Indoor Garden Design, the installation will feature over 200 geraniums in deepest burgundy to palest pink. Added to this are traditional horticultural elements of ivy and box, interwoven with aged, vintage wood and some playful animal sculptures for an eccentric twist.

The British Academy of Floral Art will be creating the first ever Exeter Floral Trail. It will run from May 22nd-24th and feature 18 floral designs, created by the Academy’s tutors and students, in retail and historic venues across the city centre. A supporting Exeter Trail map will highlight the locations, which include Exeter Cathedral, White Stuff, John Lewis, Cath Kidston, Waterstones, Lloyds Kitchen, Build-a-Bear, St Nicholas Priory and Exeter University. Five independent florist shops are also joining the Exeter Floral Trail celebrations: Trugs Florist, St Leonard’s Flower Shop, Jane’s Florist, Dunstan’s Florist and Blooms Florist.

1. From a paper mill to a hopping hangout, the State of Michigan has approved $30 million to help redevelop the Vicksburg Paper Mill.

The project includes a hotel and residential space as well as areas for micro-breweries, a beer garden, and public green space.

It’s estimated it could bring in more than 200 jobs to the area.

The owners, Paper City Development LLC, will be putting $80 million into the project.

The mill has been vacant since it closed in 2001, and is expected to be completed in 2021.

  2. Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo is celebrating Christmas in July with a free, family event.

On Friday, families can cath “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” on the big screen.

There will be two showings to choose from, plus there will be all your favorite Christmas activities from cookie decorating to pictures with Santa.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This marks the beginning of ticket sales to the auditorium’s Grinch musical taking place in November.

  3. Don’t leave your dog home the next time you go Morel Mushroom hunting. Your dog could actually help you in your search!

West Michigan K9 in West Olive has figured out how to train them to sniff them out.

They say since the mushrooms have such a unique scent, the dogs will easily find morels.

If you’re interested, West Michigan K9 has courses beginning in September that will teach your dog to do this.

  4. Move over wine and chocolate, wine and Cheez-Its seem to be the winning combo.

Kellogg has seen the Tweets praising the apparently magic combination, and they’re on top of it!

  5. Another popular food pairing, Yoplait and Hershey’s will soon release a Cookies N’ Cream Go-Gurt.

The cookie-yogurt combination is being made in tube form, so it’s easy to fit in kids’ lunchboxes or as an on-the-go snack.

The product hasn’t yet made its way fully into the mainstream grocery retail, but it’s popping up in Meijer. It’s also showing up on the same-day grocery delivery web site company, Instacart.

I hope you all had a great week whether you celebrate Christmas or not, and I hope you managed to get a lot of reading, writing, or whatever else you enjoy doing, done! Personally, I had a GREAT reading week and while I am technically on a writing break, I do have something I want to discuss in that section of this blog post though so stay tuned for that! Anyways, let’s get into this update.

I finished 4 books this week which I am really happy about because now, I am only 3 books away from finishing my 2018 reading goal! Yes, that means I have to read 3 books in one day since tomorrow is the last day of 2018, but I know I can do it since the last 3 books I want to read are short. One is the City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare audiobook which I am only one hour away from finishing…so yeah, I will finish it tomorrow for sure. The other books I plan on reading tomorrow are two novellas because THAT’S NOT CHEATING!

Anyways, for what I read this week, I read Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, and last but not least, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. I actually have a review coming out for Wintersong in the next week or two, but I will give a quick snapshot on my feelings for it, as well as the other books. I was so excited to read Wintersong, but it was not a book for me. I thought it would be because it has goblins and magic and takes place in Germany in the past, and to me, that sounds epic. Sadly, it was anything but! Anyways, more to come in my review. However, I did love Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire, the sequel to Every Heart a Doorway which I read during the BookTubeAThon in the summer and while I enjoyed it, I wasn’t blown away with the first book in this series. The sequel was so amazing though; everything from the writing to the world to the characters was just brilliant, and how the author packs so much stuff into a book under 200 pages will never cease to amaze me. But yeah, loved it! I also, OF COURSE, loved re-reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell because this is an all-time favourite of mine for sure. This may have been my fourth or fifth re-read of this contemporary to be honest, but I did’t love it any less than I did the first time or the second time and so on. I was in desperate need of a cozy, heart-warming contemporary and immediately leapt towards Fangirl because if you’ve read it, you’d know how wonderful it is and if you haven’t read it…what are you doing!? Lastly, I read the short entirety of Alice in Wonderland, the classic by Lewis Carroll which I actually have not read before. Honestly, wasn’t super impressed. It was alright but Alice…well, she is a difficult character to say the least. I wasn’t expecting much from this book, but I do wish I enjoyed it more than I did since it is a “classic”. Anyways, half of my reading this week was AMAZING and the other half was bleh, but that’s how it goes sometimes. I am so excited to strive to read 3 whole books (OKAY FINE, novellas…but those are books too! They count!) tomorrow and reach my yearly reading goal because I am so close it would suck to not reach it, you know?

Okay, okay, I know I’m on a writing break but suddenly the urge to write overtook me. Not in the way I expected or the way you might assume. Since I spent the last two days reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, I had the urge to write some fanfiction (something I haven’t done since I was 13-years-old and locked away in the world of Percy Jackson). In Fangirl, our main character, Cath, writes fanfiction for this massively popular fantasy series similar (not unlike Harry Potter), and that just made me want to write some. Not because I want to regularly write fanfiction, but because I was desperate to write something. Something that didn’t contain my own original characters or world, just my own story idea. So, I wrote 1,000 words of some AWFUL fanfiction following my favourite characters from The Dark Artifices trilogy by Cassandra Clare and it was a lot of fun. It was a great creative release and it truly helped me fill my creative well just a little bit more in a way both reading and watching Netflix can’t do. I have no idea if I will write any more terrible fanfiction or if I will write something of my own, but I do plan to head to a coffee shop tomorrow and hopefully, something productive will occur from that.

Happy birthday Sydenham High!

Former students from Sydenham High celebrated the school’s 130th birthday by recreating a photo of their geography class from the 1960s.  

The Westwood Hill-based school opened its doors in February 1887 with just 20 pupils and the number soon grew to 200. Today some 580 girls aged from four to 18 attend.

Celebrations began on the school’s actual birthday, February 22, with a whole school assembly that told the story of the institution’s early history. A birthday cake for all pupils and staff was cut by the head girls and junior heads of house.

More than 150 alumnae and teachers past and present attended a birthday lunch, which saw pupils from 1950-2008 catch up with old classmates and exchange memories and anecdotes. One group recreated a snap of their geography class taken more than 50 years ago.  

The school also held a photographic exhibition called Sydenham High: Past Meets Present, in collaboration with Sydenham Arts. It combined archival images with those taken by current students, which will form part of a school time capsule that is set to be buried later this year.

Sydenham High has a long history of community action and fundraising. Pupils will join the St Christopher’s Hospice fun walk in May and will continue to support their sister school in Nepal, which was built with student-raised funds after the devastating earthquakes of 2015.

Speaking of the 130-year milestone, acting head Karl Guest said: “We are not celebrating our bricks and mortar but the community of students and staff who have made, and make, this school what it is today.

“Our motto “nyle ye drede” means “fear nothing”, and we aim as our founders did to ensure that the students in our care aim high, without fearing failure, to make the most of their future.”
