I got to give a tour to one of my favorite local historians today

he has researched (and also many times discovered) every single burial site on the island!!!! and he WANTS TO BE A PART OF MY GRAVESTONE CLEANINJG PROGRAM!! and he plays the accordion!!!!! literally got to give him a tour and then sit down and talk with him for an hour and he is SO nice and was like stop calling me an expert I just know where the graves are and I'm like !!!! you have basically inventoried the history of the island through gravestones you are the coolest person I have ever met !!!! and he wants me to teach him???? about fraternal order symbology on local gravestones???? this is so very exciting guys

She immediately realizes what she said and frantically apologizes but it’s too late.

Bruce just- Blue Screens. Completely stunned into silence

Dick -who was unfortunate enough to be the one teamed up with Batman tonight- is fighting for his life to choke back his laughter

Jason doesn’t even try to stop his and has collapsed to his knees from lack of air from how hard he’s laughing. Cass try’s half heartedly patting his back to help to no avail

The criminals are terrified into surrender from The Red Hood just laughing hysterically at seemingly nothing while Batman just Stands There

Damian ends up being the only one still functioning enough to continue arresting everyone, though he is privately amused and strangely proud

Tim and Barbara have saved both the com recordings and cowl footage to at least three different servers and sent it to absolutely everyone before Batman even recovers

Duke finds out second hand the next morning and is furious he missed the chance to see it in person. He declares he is moving to the nightshift so it doesn’t happen again. (He is all talk and goes to bed by 9 pm)

Bruce bans the phrase for life and promises swift and server punishment to anyone who dares to use it again

A little kid and his mother are trick or treating in another city, perhaps at some kind of event rather than knocking on doors, and the kid is dressed as Phantom. It’s very adorable, with his little ghost-shaped bucket and clearly homemade and already stained costume—listen, white only works if you can just fly over street grime or phase it out of your clothes—and his slightly I’ll fitting wig. The kid is SO happy to be out and about dressed as his favorite, and maybe even showed it off to Phantom back in Amity Park before his family left.

The hero, insert whoever you wish here, is probably in civvies and just enjoying the event. The kid, meanwhile, is so glad when people ask who he is so he can explain, and so- the hero gets to hear ALL ABOUT the local town hero who is probably pretty small time despite the kid’s clearly exaggerated stories. The hero certainly never heard of him, but the kid’s mom confirms that Phantom really was the town hero, despite some mixed reviews of the poor guy.

“Did you manage to show him your costume?” the hero asks.

“Yeah! We went down to the cemetery to leave flowers and I got to show him my costume.”

Wait. Cemetery? Maybe it was part of theme, because Phantom had to be named that for a reason, but… it sounded like…

The kid ignores the suddenly VERY still hero and instead turns to his mom. “Momma, do you think we should bring him candy? He doesn’t get to trick or treat like we do, and I can work super hard to get him a bunch!”

The kid’s mom just smiles. “We could, but maybe we should bring him something homemade. I bet he’d like something more filling, teen boys like him have a hollow leg.”

The kid wrinkles his nose. “Like Vernie with the pizza bagels?”

“Like your cousin, yes. We can make some cinnamon rolls and take them to his memorial, maybe bring some of the apples from your grandpa’s garden…”

The hero is pretty much forgotten as the two-part family wanders off, not quite intentionally forgetting the hero is there so much as the hero somewhat accidentally ended the conversation when they just froze and didn’t ask anything further.

Not that the hero didn’t want to. But they’d learn something very serious.

One—there was a small town hero they’d never heard of. Two—that hero was apparently a teen. Third—most pressingly, the teen hero was both beloved enough to have kids dressing up as him and dead enough to have a grave.

This… might require some phone calls.

There is a cemetery in the Netherlands with over 8,000 U.S. WWII veterans' graves. For over 70 years, Dutch families have visited the cemetery every week to tend to graves they have adopted. Currently, hundreds of people are waiting for a chance to become caretakers.

Edinburgh Castle's dog cemetery.

Looking down to the wee graveyard last week.

Hidden within the grounds of Edinburgh Castle, a dedicated dog cemetery may be the landmark's strangest feature.

There are a huge number of fascinating historical stories hidden within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, but perhaps none so curious and touching as the tale behind the castle’s dog cemetery.

The small green space is thought to have originally been the site of a medieval tower, but since 1840 it has been the final resting place for regimental mascots or honoured dogs belonging to high-ranking soldiers.

The cemetery is referenced in this verse from the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns:

”Berkin dugs here lie at rest ”The yappin worst, obedient best ”Sodgers pets and mascots tae ”Still the guard the castle to this day.

One of only two like it in Scotland, the unique graveyard is home to more than 20 headstones.

Sadly, several of the inscriptions have worn away over the last century or so, probably thanks to Edinburgh’s signature chilly, wet and windy weather.

Of the engravings still visible, the oldest dates back to 1881 - a dedication to Jess, band pet of the Black Watch 42nd Royal Highlanders.

The newest headstone in the cemetery belongs to Winkle, the “dear and faithful friend of Lady Gow and the Governor”, who died in 1980.

Other faithful pups laid to rest here include Yum Yum, Tim and Dobbler, who travelled as far as China, Sri Lanka and South Africa with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

These days, visitors to the castle cannot enter the cemetery, but it can be viewed from above, like I did.

This is a jewish tombstone

from a small hungarian village, Tuzsér. It is standing in the middle of litter, as the place of the jewish cemetery is nowadays used as a garbage dump.

When I found this place, I knew I should include it in the zine that we created on the Art of Abandoned Jewish Cemeteries of Hungary, since we wanted to raise attention to the sad state of jewish cemeteries of the country. As it is visible by the blessing hands symbol, this tombstone belongs to a kohanite person, who is a descendant just like all other kohanites, of the high priests of the Temple.

What we can read at the tombstone is just a short line, which says Here lies the elderly Yehuda, son of Cvi Ha-kohen, died in 1906.

This is how it ended up eventually in the Art of Abandoned Jewish Cemeteries zine, the symbol was reproduced with lino cut and the surrounding text explains the symbols and share a bit about the history of the community of Tuzsér:

Florence Irene Ford was just ten-years-old when she passed away in 1871 after contracting yellow fever. While alive, Florence was terrified of thunderstorms. Whenever a storm would roll in, Florence would run to her mother’s side to be comforted until it passed.

When Florence passed away, her mother was distraught. She had a custom coffin built with a glass end where Florence’s head was placed. At the grave in Natchez City Cemetery, she had a pit dug and lined with brick. Steps were then built into the grave along with a heavy iron door. Whenever there was a storm, Florence's mother would go to the grave and sit inside the pit, keeping her dead daughter company until the storm passed.

According to cemetery director, Don Estes, the grave is haunted. The glass window has long been bricked over but the pit and iron door still remain. “I brought a lady out here one day, and she just got frantic,” he said. According to the lady, her mother brought her to the grave many years before. When her mother went down into the pit, she rushed back out, screaming and rolling on the ground with a green glow over her. Estes said that another cemetery worker had witnessed the entire ordeal unfold.
