Well she called her a sap which caused her to feel hurt and run away fron the office
So what are your opinions on namecalling and cursing each other (like bi*ch r*tartded imbecile etc) in a relationship. Is it okay during arguements and you let it go afterwards or is there a different opinion on it.
I mean, in my personal life I'm pretty anti-name calling across the board. No matter how mad I've ever been at a partner I've never felt the need to belittle them. But fiction is also fiction because people move through it making mistakes obvious to outside observers.
In Fen's case she was furiously interrogating Charles and asking basically if he was just looking for a sucker who could love her without intending to imply that Leda was a sucker. She apologized and Leda kinda understood that spending a year as a waterfowl definitely built up some hotheadedness.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? (The Golden Apple of Discord, the Judgement of Paris and the most beautiful woman in the world)
The Golden Apple of Discord was dropped by Eris, the goddess of strife. Enraged because she wasn't invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, she fueled a vanity contest between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. The apple was meant for 'the fairest one', and Paris was to choose the winner. He chose Aphrodite, who bribed him by giving him the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen of Sparta. [source]
I saw the ghost of what must have once been a beautiful woman, a beautiful woman who gave birth to a beautiful son. [SaB, Ch. 15]
According to this article, 'the golden apple' was identified as quince. Dictionary of Plant Lore states that quince represents a symbol of happiness and fertility. In 17th century England, it was reckoned that pregnant women who eat quince bear wise children.
Each day, the pregnant queen walked the battlements at the top of the palace, her belly swollen, praying that her child would be wise and strong and handsome, but praying most of all for a kind wind to cool her skin and grant her some relief. [Ayama and the Thorn Wood]
Helen's mother Leda was the queen of Sparta, known for her beautiful black hair and snowy skin. Zeus seduced her disguised as a swan seeking protection from the pursuing eagle. On the same night, she went to lay with her husband, and as a result, she got two eggs from which hatched Helen, Clytemnestra, Castor and Pollux. The Homeric tradition suggests that Helen was immortal. [source]
I had been playing dolls and my sister had whined and howled and stamped her little feet until my mother insisted that I give over my favorite toy, a wooden swan carved by our father in one of the rare moments that he’d paid me any attention. [RaR, Ch. 10]
The etymology of Helen's name is unclear. The most common theories are focused around Helenē, probably fem. of helenos "the bright one." [source]
“Welcome, Lena!” boomed the Ulle as he strode toward them. Eryk barely registered the name his mother had taken. To him, she was always Mama, Madraya. [The Demon in the Wood]

for the reading asks, 2, 3 & 25 !
OPHELIAAA 🫶🫶🫶 thank u for the ask!!!!
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I did actually! I normally don’t do re-reads because I love being surprised by new content and I have such little time to read nowadays, but I reread Women’s Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle by Thomas Sankara. I actually plan to re-read a lot more of my socialist books soon, and this was a great start.
3. What were your top five books of the year?
I’m ngl this was a slightly mid year for reading for me 😭💔 A lot of my reads were below par, at least compared to last year and the one before, but I did really enjoy a few!!! Here are my faves of this year!
The Poppy War by RF Kuang. This book is so special to me, and I love it dearly. Kuang writes such a rich, tragic world with characters that feel so real. The themes in the series are so dark, and it’s inspired by the real second Sino-Japanese war. It’s a story of colonialism, power, resistance, and it’s just really dark and fucked. Rin is my baby (she’s a war criminal). The vibes in this book compared to the rest of the series are unmatched personally. The school setting, watching Rin practice and work so hard, her rivalry with Nezha, her mentor Jiang, EVERYTHING WITH ATLAS OH MY GOD 💔 this is a must read fantasy for sure!
Counterpart by Ella Pyne. I picked this up randomly on my Kindle Unlimited because the premise seemed cool and oh my goddd I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing it is. I have NOT read a good romantic fantasy like this in such a long time. It’s about a kingdom where the king’s royal children each have a doppleganger assigned to them, and these “dopplegangers” are his illegitimate children whose mothers are concubines. In order to appease the Gods who give him his royal power, he forces one royal child to kill their doppleganger on their 16th birthday. Leda our MC is the counterpart to Azaria, and she lives everyday waiting for her impending death. She makes a plan to escape but basically things go haywire in the book. The political intrigue, the darkness, the prose, the twisted beauty of each and every character, the family drama, the horror of the court and witnessing our main character in such an awful position, it’s so beautiful and I cannot recommend this enough!! I am 👌 this close to showing up to Pyne’s house myself and begging for the third book.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This is one of those books that change your brain chemistry istg. I am not the same person I was before. If you don’t dig my corpse out of my grave because you miss me, then you don’t love me sorry! /j. It’s a really depraved dramatic haunting story with no ounce of decorum, a stark difference to my precious exposure to Austen’s works. The Brontë sisters do NOT play around, and I love it.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. It took me like 2-3 business days to realize I loved this one, because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It makes me so sad because it’s so painfully real, and there is this sentiment in the prose that always gets me, like this resigned expectation of a society that will care more about your work value than you as a person.
Hmm filling this out is hard because after these top 4, I have a few that I equally enjoyed a lot. But I’ll go with Intercepts by T.J Payne. This is a sci-fi horror, so very out of my comfort zone but I loved it! It’s like Stranger Things x Smile, and it was SO freaky and I made a mistake reading it while I was alone in my house lmfao. It has a really fun engaging plot (not in a happy way lol), fleshed out characters, and a super eerie vibe.
25. What reading goals do you have for the next year?
Ahh I want to really get through my physical TBR in the next year because it’s kind of ridiculous how I still haven’t read books I’ve owned for 2+ years lol. And more specifically as a reading goal, I plan to engage with more diverse fantasy! I feel like I’ve stuck to more popular books and I really want to change that, find more hidden gems and support BIPOC/queer authors!!!! They’re more fun anyways lol <3 I also need to actually start reading sequels I’ve been holding off on 😭 I have this bad habit of quitting something at the end because I don’t want to let go of it lol (like y’all I stopped watching Bleach at the last ten episodes lmfao) and I want to finish more book series next year for sure!

De Algemene Verwarring #95 - 10 July 2023
The ninety-fifth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, July 10, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-95-10-juli-2023/
Pictured below is Rick Froberg, here performing with Drive Like Jehu somewhere in the early nineties. It’s always a pity that I have to write something about someone who passed away unexpectedly at a much too young age. Rick Froberg was 55. That’s only three years older than I am, and he died from natural causes. Froberg was an graphic artist but was mainly known as frontman and guitar player for the bands (in chronological order) Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits and only that last one wasn’t with his partner in crime John ‘Swami’ Reis. I’ve seen the last three of those bands live, and I have always been most impressed with Drive Like Jehu, who released only two full length albums, but whose influence cannot be underestimated. It’s their brilliant mixture of melody and dissonance that have influenced fellow nineties bands such as Polvo, Trumans Water, and many more. Drive Like Jehu played in the Pit’s in those early nineties, and the day after they played in a garden in my student home town Leuven, saw them twice and each time left me in amazement. Later I saw Hot Snakes in Ghent, and as encores they played two Drive Like Jehu tracks and in all honesty I can say those two tracks blew the whole Hot Snakes set away. Drive Like Jehu was a brilliant, a brilliant band and I cannot recommend you enough to buy their albums. And when you are 55, you don’t die, ok? Laat ons dat afspreken.
Other music in this episode, last one of the season by the way, comes from Avengers, TNT, Nots, Swell Maps, Soft Drinks, The Christian Family, Chrome Cranks, Dinosaur Jr & Lou Barlow, Nova Mob, De Fabriek, and there’s also brand new stuff from Roy Montgomery, Oroskällan, and Leda. Oh and by the way I have to apologize for a short break in the recording of this episode during the Brecht Ameel track. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy the summer and you’ll hear me back in September!

What being ‘of Sparta’ means to Leda
Tumblr media
The biggest difference between Leda and my other Spartan muses (Helen, Hermione) is that Leda became “of Sparta” through marriage rather than heritage. This means that Leda’s upbringing was drastically different from theirs. Thinking back on the Achaean kingdoms, Sparta stood out for the position of women in society. The model of Athenian democracy in Ancient Greece might have seemed attractive in comparison to the Spartan’s strick way of life. There is a reason why in modern language we still use the word ‘spartan’ as an adjective for austere, strict, severe, etc, but the Athenian way only really worked for men (I’m not even going to discuss the issue of class, to prevent getting sidetracked). If you were a woman in Ancient Greece, Sparta was the place to be.
Leda is a woman of ambition. Her father was a son of Ares and through this heritage she has a warlike, passionate nature. When instructing her daughters on marriage, her words would go along these lines: “Do not expect it to be easy, because it never is, but you will do well because Laconia has given you gifts that I never had”. This is not victimization. Leda has a good relationship with Tyndareus, despite her love for Zeus. The point is that she wishes that she was born of Sparta, because it is a land where she is able to exert her power and to have real, effective influence.  Leda is also not as skilled in hunting and fighting as her daughters are because she was not raised to be, though she certainly would practice and develop some skill after moving to Sparta.
She needed no convincing to advocate a spartan way of life. No wonder. To think that the other city-states fed the girls less than the boys and kept them locked in their homes and that Leda saw her own daughters being equally fed and just as influential as their brothers, that the girls were free to exercise and even flirt must have proven an impactful contrast to her own upbringing.
That’s not to say that Ancient Sparta was an utopic feminist paradise, but that’s a very meaningful difference, I suppose.
