Oikawa Tooru has a guilty conscience and a bad habit of breaking his promises. 

For every promise made and every promise broken, Tooru repents: 200 yen slid in a saisen-bako, a ninety degree bow, two wishes at a shrine. An offering to counter every promise he breaks, ample water to wash away his sins, and apologies written on wood.

 ( Iwaizumi has made the grand suggestion of: Maybe not breaking your promises? on several occasions, but Tooru can’t help it. ) 

He’s broken four promises and made eight wishes so far: four on blue Tanzaku and four atop Ema boards, followed with a prayer and an offering if the promise broken was particularly heinous or particularly his fault. 

He breaks his first promise at six years old– one made with you and Iwaizumi when the three of you were four and freshly neighbors. It was Tooru’s birthday, and he had promised this: 

I swear that I will take us all to the Ryokan before I turn six.

It’s a small promise: one that neither you nor Hajime had expected him to follow through with. But Tooru believed it, and Tooru had tried. He takes every single chore and odd job in the Oikawa household, scraping together a two-year-old Ryokan trust fund with mismatched coins and crumpled bills. He saves his allowances and puts everything in a glass jar next to his bed, and dreams.

Two Julys pass. Oikawa blows out four candles and then five, the jar gets bigger, you start Elementary school, and you and Hajime forget about the Ryokan. And then, on the third July, when Tooru turns six, you and Iwaizumi find Tooru mumbling about a broken promise— courtesy of his failure to take the three of you on an all inclusive trip to that Snow Monkey Ryokan that Iwaizumi wanted to go to. 

So he apologizes through prayers at a shrine and two wishes under a red Torii gate. It’s a thirty five stair climb to the neighborhood shrine: Hajime and Tooru race up and you come last, but the view is gorgeous and Tooru feels considerably less guilty.

It is 100 yen for each wish on a colored paper strip. Hajime says they’re called Tanzaku. Hajime drops one coin, Tooru drops four, you drop two. Seven thunks, four wishes. 

Tooru gets the honor of tying your tanzaku on bamboo branches as the tallest of your trio, and with it, the honor of reading your wishes.

Iwaizumi’s wish is messy and scrawled on bright red— Tooru tells him to Please work on your handwriting, but it’s legible and all well wishes for volleyball and you and Oikawa and cicadas.

Tooru’s got two wishes— a cyan one and a turquoise one, but he only lets you and Hajime read the cyan one. His cyan one is a little neater than Iwaizumi’s and reads:

Sorry I couldn’t take us to the Monkey Ryokan. 

He hangs the red one on his tippy-toes. Cyan next. Hajime cheers a little when Tooru hangs turquoise next to your pink one, and then asks: 

“Whaddya need two wishes for anyways?” 

He shrugs. 

“Guilty conscience, maybe?”

You’re thirteen when Tooru promises that he is going to ask you out in two years. Tooru is not allowed to date until he’s in high school, so he tells you under a blanket of stars that when the two of you are a little older, he will ask you out properly and maybe take you on a date. 

He walks you to school every morning. Hajime comes too, but the pink skies before the sun rises are for you and Tooru. Moments before you make it to Iwaizumi’s block are moments that Tooru gives you his scarf, and then his gloves, and when the wind bites at your cheeks too hard his jacket is draped over your shoulders. On rainy days, Tooru holds the umbrella and laughs as your fingers brush and your cheeks flush. Some mornings he brings you toast: and tells you in hushed whispers to eat it before Iwa-Chan sees. 

Oikawa and Iwaizumi walk you home after cram school and volleyball practice. Hajime’s house is first— so Iwaizumi bows first, heads back inside first, waves goodnight first. When the door closes and the light turns on, the black sky and twinkling stars are for you and Tooru. He always says Good Night saccharine sweet with a smile like the sun that makes you feel like you really can’t wait to turn fifteen. 

Oikawa blows out fourteen candles. The three of you graduate in blue and walk home like usual. Summer passes, another July goes by, Oikawa blows out fifteen candles, and high school starts.

You learn several things in your first year at high school: you really like the student council, Hajime is actually pretty smart, and Tooru is afraid of commitment. 

Tooru is popular: he is athletic and tall and the Volleyball Club’s golden first year. He smiles at the girls in his class, he slings arms around their shoulders, he winks when he passes by the student council room, and he preens a little and shines a lot.

Oikawa is fifteen when he goes on his first date with a girl from another school: and when he tells you and Iwaizumi after he gets home, he plays dumb as Hajime gives him a look and takes you home, overhearing Iwaizumi’s apologies and your crestfallen voice as you say something about a promise.

Oikawa’s chest hurts that night so he walks to the shrine with 200 yen in his pocket and a sorry scrawled on two pieces of colored Tanzaku. 

Oikawa turns sixteen and goes to the shrine again. 

This time, it’s a broken promise with a girl in his class. She was popular– she smelled like cotton candy and reminded Tooru of strawberries and daisies, so when she asked Tooru out, he had said Sure, and he had smiled like she was the sun. 

But he’s a bad boyfriend– a terrible boyfriend– because he’s only there when it’s convenient and he ditches her for volleyball practice and maybe sometimes he catches himself thinking about a certain childhood friend when she holds his hand and buys him milk bread at lunch. 

She was sweet and she was terribly pretty, but he doesn’t feel anything when she kisses him or when she rests her head on his shoulder.

Iwaizumi asks him what he’s running from after practice one day. Tooru knows Iwaizumi is asking why he is running from you. 

Tooru is a little scared of how you make him feel too much. Oikawa likes being in control and Oikawa likes stability, so when he realizes that his heart thumps erratically whenever you’re around and he finds himself all consumed with thoughts of you and a burning desire to please you; he rejects and refrains. And runs.

His girlfriend dumps him after a few months. Tooru says sorry, removes her phone contact, and faintly remembers a promise he made with her four weeks ago. 

I swear I’m not in love with someone else.

Oikawa’s fourth promise is one to himself and one to Seijoh. 

We will make it to Nationals. 

He doesn’t leave his room for a week when he breaks it. He’s inconsolable. He says he’s sick: he’s got a bad fever, it’s contagious, he’s bedridden, he’s fine. But the lights are never on in his room, his curtains are always drawn, and you know that Tooru devoted everything for a chance and a dream and a volleyball. 

He comes to you first. He’s standing in your doorway and there are bags under his eyes and he says, Hi, and then, I’m fine. He tries for a smile— and then you give him a look, and suddenly he’s in your arms and sobbing. 

He cries for two hours. Tooru ugly cries– his chest racks when he sobs and his arms are tight around you and digging into your back. Oikawa Tooru is not weak: but he is not a prodigy.  

He falls asleep in your bed with his head in your lap and your hands in his hair, but his eyebrows are furrowed and he’s shifting a lot and he’s probably having a nightmare. You call Hajime before gently shaking Tooru awake. 

He blinks up at you— all puffy eyes and tousled hair and swollen cheeks, but he sees you and he softens.

“Wanna go to the shrine?”

Iwaizumi still grumbles the whole way up the thirty five steps, but he’s quiet as Oikawa slips two coins into the saizen-bako. Hajime wraps an arm around your shoulder as the coins rattle in the box and you know he’s upset too— his hands are slightly shaking and he keeps sniffing. Nationals might have been Oikawa’s dream but Iwaizumi was also a dreamer, and sure, Oikawa was going to go, but they were going to go together.

Tooru hangs two Ema boards and for the first time, he bows at the Honden. Two claps. Head down and hands together as he prays. Iwaizumi joins him: and you watch as Oikawa apologizes to him and Hajime shakes his head- because it was Hajime’s promise too. 

Oikawa is twenty-eight and on a plane when he finally keeps his first promise. 

It’s a small promise: but a promise nonetheless, one that he made before he left for Argentina. He tells you he loves you at the airport but he has his boarding pass in one hand and his passport in the other. And you tell him you love him too, but also that he’s being unfair, and no you won’t go out with him. And Oikawa knew you would say that, but he still finds himself making a promise– a promise you laugh at because Oikawa Tooru never keeps his promises.

If we’re still single in ten years, I’m going to find you, and I’m going to ask you out. 

You cry, and Tooru wraps his arms around you and cries too— and then Iwaizumi’s there, and Iwaizumi’s crying, and you don’t know which part of you is Oikawa or Iwaizumi. Oikawa leaves for Argentina with a heavy heart but a hunger for the future. 

In the ten years that pass he plays a lot of volleyball. He tans a lot. He learns some Spanish. He tries beach volleyball. And then, he buys a plane ticket on his birthday.

nekoma vs nohebi

i cannot believe i had missed out on the nekoma vs nohebi game because i started reading the haikyu!! manga after season 4. this game was so thrilling, especially since both nekoma and nohebi share the same tenacity and strong defense. once again, furudate and his team demonstrated why haikyu!! is such a special manga, that not only makes you root for both teams, but treats all of its characters so humanely. here’s my thoughts on the game <3

teamwork

one of haikyu!!'s greatest lessons is that you can never win alone. from kageyama enabling hinata to “fly even higher,” iwaizumi telling oikawa that there are six of them on the court, atsumu relying on all of his spikers for better support, and kageyama wanting to “go further with this team,” even the most skilled and ambitious characters never fight alone, but bring the best out of their teams just as they are themselves supported by their teammates.

yet in the beginning of the nekoma vs nohebi arc, kuroo tells lev that teamwork is complicated too. each team has its own dynamic, there are players who want to stand out, like tora or lev, and those who give them the capacity to do so. there is no formula to make the whole team come together harmoniously.

haikyu!! masterfully brings out that complexity underlying teamwork and the fact that individuality and collectivity are not mutually exclusive, but enable one another. i used the term “enabling” before when describing hinata and kageyama's partnership, and i think that this is symbolizes haikyu!!'s conception of teamwork. lev and shibayama demonstrated this in chapter 204, while lev had been concentrating on becoming “one yaku” together with shibayama. yet their true strength was only fully unlocked once lev understood that they can never be yaku, the only way to work around the problem is to make most out of shibayama's and his own abilities. each adapts to what makes the other irreplaceable, and by doing so, they give each other the possibility to play their best, enable each other, rather than suppress that uniqueness to fit a predesigned scheme.

volleyball is the perfect expression of this because, materially, “every play is connected” - as lev says, no one can be blamed for a lost point. every position is important to the game and it is only by fulfilling their role to the fullest that each player can keep the game going. with lev baiting the opposite hitter into targeting shibayama, haikyu!! takes teamwork from abstraction to materiality, which lends it even more weight, and strikes a powerful balance between individuality and collectivity, as one cannot be without the other.

and furudate's expressive art style transcribes the characters' states of mind so eloquently. kuroo and lev's thoughtfulness, kuroo's intimate conviction that lev will be okay, then his smile, both content for lev and threatened by his awakening, have us feel the same emotions as the characters. furudate's storytelling and art are inseparable, it embodies the essence of manga as a genre.

foreshadowing kenma's trajectory in the karasuno vs nekoma game is kuguri's budding care for volleyball. as tsukihima or kenma, kuguri is presented as a laid-back character, whose talent doesn't entail a particular love for volleyball. at the beginning of the game, nohebi's coach attempts to fire him up (to no avail), and kuguri remains coolheaded. but as the game progresses, kuguri seems to care a little more, which is why this small gesture of pumping his fist after a good play is so precious. love for volleyball is at the heart of haikyu!!, and i love how differently it is portrayed every time: tsukki blocking ushijima was an insane play that got him hooked on volleyball, playing beach volleyball with hinata in brazil reminded oikawa how fun trying new things is, karasuno overcoming kenma's strategy had him try harder and made the game fun for kenma. kuguri's growing enthusiasm is subtler, but it hits really hard, especially because he seemed so uninterested at first.

and his teammates' reaction, their smiles and furudate's signature lines under their eyes, which signal emotion, show us the cohesion in nohebi's team. although nohebi don't seem particularly likeable at first, as they are not above “dirty” schemes such as deliberately targetting tora or buttering up to the referee, these moments humanize them. it has us rooting for both teams and shows the opponent's dignity, the fact that they too have hopes and believe in their teammates.

my favorite detail about kuguri's arc was when numai comes to comfort him after their loss. the fact that we don't see kuguri until the last panel, where he is pictured crying, gives the scene even more emotional weight. numai's words are especially powerful, because haikyu!! always makes a point of showing that sadness and disappointment are legitimate emotions to feel. instead of telling kuguri to cheer up, numai acknowledges his frustration and confirms that of the entire team. even more than this, numai is “relieved” at the sight of kuguri's frustration because it means that kuguri cares, which is the first step toward trying again.

and of couse, lev also senses his potential and how much he can still grow. those panels are some of my favorites in haikyu!!, the characters' voracity and thirst for more always give me a boost to keep improving too, all while keeping in mind that growth starts with health.

good vs. bad?

what distinguishes nohebi from other teams is that they are not above “dirty” plays. at the same time, even if they use exterior factors such as the referee to their advantage, the story does them justice by highlighting their volleyball technique. it would have been easy to take this game into the classic fair play vs. dirty play direction, but here once again haikyu!! subverts manichaean plotlines by treating the opposing team not as a stepping stone for the protagonists, but as subjects in their own right. even if it is is implied that kuroo and suguru don't get along (i love them), or rather see each other as rivals, kuroo insists on nohebi's impressive volleyball skills. while the team that lost against nohebi kept focusing on their dirty tricks and disregarding nohebi's other strengths, this scene rightfully draws attention to the fact that nohebi also earned their place in the spring tournament through hard work, and at the end of chapter 206 mika also emphasizes all the time spent by suguru in practice.

the way that rival teams, however minor, are always treated with dignity and respect by the storyline is what makes haikyu!! so good. there is a place for everyone's story in haikyu!! and there is room for compassion. every character has walked a different path, which makes their approach to volleyball and their philosophy different, but no point of view is dismissed, all are equally valuable, whether they are about pursuing volleyball or something else. looking at those panels of the winning team celebrating or the losing team crying will wrench your heart in both directions, the strong friendships in haikyu!! will never fail to move me.

ultimately, what prevails is getting attached to both teams over the course of the game - and i now have a new bunch of characters to appreciate and gush about!

It took you a while to warm up to your new team. As the new and youngest manager of the MSBY Jackals, you had to prove yourself. You had to show the other managers and the coach that you were a serious candidate and the best pick for the team. You also had to juggle with getting along with the players. Being an introvert, it was hard at first but they weren’t too pushy and they were mostly down with keeping the relationship professional. Sure you were sometimes jealous of the team dinners you wouldn’t allow yourself to go to in fear of not belonging. Always giving out excuses to miss team building exercises. Polite answers to their questions on your private life. If you had to be honest you didn’t want to get attached or come out as needy. You were told throughout all your whole life that you were a cold bitch but hey you never got humiliated by anyone for showing too much interest and that’s what truly mattered to you. Dignity. And keeping it intact. That was until hurricane Miya hit you. Three blissful months of keeping your walls up and no one paying too much attention to you but the piss blond setter started forcing conversations with you more and more. You were a pro when it came to avoiding deep or personal conversations but Atsumu Miya had a knack for taking people by surprise. One minute you’re politely laughing at the pleasantries exchanged on the weather next he tells you he feels a responsibility to be successful at volleyball since his brother stopped playing and right after he’ll ask you who you think is hotter between him and Oikawa. At first it was funny. You’d just humor him by listening and giving back small answers. Until one day he actually got a genuine laugh out of you after a joke at the expense of Bokuto. It wasn’t even that funny. But it cheered you up after you had been yelled at by the coach for messing up paperwork. The problem is that you let out your realest ugliest laugh. And not only did it catch you off guard but Atsumu too. As you put your hand on your mouth apologizing his eyes widened “that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard in my whole life” he said with a smile. You quickly excused yourself after that. Later that night as you were in your bed, thinking back, it dawned you: you were developing the most cliche of crushes on Atsumu. You had to nip this in the bud immediately. You just had to figure out how.

You had been stunned. You weren't expecting Oikawa to answer you, so when he did, you truly didn't know what to do next.

Silence.

"Look," you started, "I know it's been a really long time since we last talked, but..."

You really had no idea what to say.

"Um... I- sorry I..." you shook your head, brows furrowing as you sighed.

Silence followed again.

You looked down at your feet trying to remind yourself to be grounded and not chicken out. You finally got to this moment, and now you felt like running away and hiding under the covers of your comfortable bed.

You should've prepared more, you told yourself.

But really, how were you actually supposed to do that? You've worked yourself up so much, so many times just to get to where you are now.

"That's ok."

Your head whipped back up at Oikawa's response. That was much better than what you had initially imagined how it was going to go. The next sentence he threw at you almost made you stop breathing for a moment.

"I'm just really glad to hear your voice again."

You let out a sigh of relief. The unease you had felt going into this moment started to vanish. Oikawa's receptiveness made you start to let your guard down.

"Did I wake you," you asked softly.

"No," Oikawa rasped.

You silently chuckled, "You liar, I did, didn't I? I'm sorry."

"No, no, no, it's fine," the setter replied hastily.

Oikawa muttered something that you couldn't make out, prompting you to ask him what he said.

"I, uh, it's nothing," he shrugged, "I was just saying that I don't mind because it's you."

That made the corners of your lips tug up. He ended mumbling that last bit, but you could easily understand what he said.

"I'm really sorry for not keeping in touch, I-"

"Don't worry," Oikawa cut you off, "Iwa-chan had told me you were going through some things."

Your heart stopped for a second, "Did he tell you exactly what those things were?"

"No, he said that you would let me know when you were ready."

"Ah," you breathed, "ok."

"But, y/n..."

Oh how you missed your name being called out by him. Oikawa always had a teasing tone in his voice when he called you by your name. But this time, the teasing tone was absent. There was a tenderness that painted out the sound and syllables of your name.

"It's been almost two years... are you ok?"

Such a simple question. You knew Oikawa was being very careful. He was typically very nosy, but he was also very perceptive. That question cloaked a million other questions that Oikawa wanted ask.

It almost brought out some stray tears that had remained within you.

You smiled somberly, "I am now."

A comforting silence fell upon you two.

You're not sure what it was, but things were finally feeling right. Even after two years of not communicating with each other, you and Oikawa still seemed to be on the same page.

"Um," you were still a bit hesitant, "I also wanted to let you know that I found a job in Brazil."

This was definitely news. At first, Oikawa was excited to be in closer proximity to you after years of being thousands of miles apart. But then he realized that that bastard would be coming with you. Oikawa's excitement fizzled into something bitter.

The bitterness inside got the better of him.

"Oh, that's great," he quipped, "and I'm guessing what's-his-face is comin-"

"He's not in the picture anymore," you shut up Oikawa.

"Oh..."

That was all you had to say. Oikawa tried filling in the blanks, but didn't push you further. Don't get him wrong, Oikawa was definitely shocked. But the selfish part of him found a silver lining in your situation.

"Anyways," you softly deflected, "I just thought it would be nice to meet up when we both have the time."

The silver lining being the second chance that Oikawa never thought he was going to ever get. The initial bitterness he felt reverted back to excitement.

Oikawa sat up, propping himself against the headboard of his bed, "Yes."

He thinks he might've said that too quickly.

"I mean, uh, yeah," he tried to smoothly play it off, "just let me know when you get to Brazil, and I'll find time for you."

That last bit made you smile again.

"Oh, I, uh, forgot to mention that I'm already living in Brazil," you sheepishly said.

"Oh," Oikawa started, "well, that's perfect."

"Really?" You raised your eyebrows.

"Yeah," he said before whispering, "really perfect."

You were glad that the two of you were only on a phone call. If Oikawa saw how bashful you looked now, he would ruin the mood with his endless teasing.

On the other end, Oikawa fell into a dreamy state. He couldn't believe this was real. It wasn't until now did he realize how much he yearned to talk to you again.

Knowing that you currently live in the same continent as him made Oikawa nearly evaporate. What were the odds that you suddenly appeared so close to him when the two of you seemed like strangers.

"Ok," you felt a little giddy, "well I'll let you go since it's late."

"I don't mind," the setter bluntly stated.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah," Oikawa reassured you, "I have the day off tomorrow anyways."

"Ah, but I don't want to take up time during your day off-"

"Y/n."

"Yes?"

"I'm telling you that I want to stay up and talk to you," Oikawa resolutely stated.

You paused before attempting to convince Oikawa that you wanted to respect his time again.

He wanted to do these things for you. When was the last time someone had done that for you? Oikawa desired to stay up late because he got to talk to you and hear your voice. Because it's you.

Something pleasant bubbled up inside you as a grin broke out onto your face. You're glad Oikawa made it clear to you. Why?

... because you both ended up talking until the sun started to rise.
