Diet and Depression
We are all familiar with the saying "you are what you eat," but can what you eat also interfere with your mood? The simple answer is yes. Those are the findings of nutritionists and researchers who have investigated whether what you eat can increase or decrease the risk for or symptoms of depression.
Researchers at El Camino Hospital, California say diet may have a significant effect on preventing and treating depression. They found that depression can either increase or decrease appetite and negative mood states have been shown to stimulate a preference for foods high in sugar, fat and/or salt.
The Brain-Gut Connection
Studies have shown that the bacteria that lives inside the gut and contribute to overall health is significantly different in healthy people than it is in depressed people.
Your body needs adequate supplies of lots of nutrients to help support its ability to manufacture neurotransmitters such as serotonin, also sometimes called the feel-good chemical. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that carry messages between neurons.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep, appetite, moods and inhibits pain and is primarily produced in the gastrointestinal tract, which is lined with millions of nerve cells, or neurons. This means that our digestive systems don’t just help us digest and absorb our food, but also play a significant role in how we feel.
How well your neurons function and produce serotonin, is influenced by your gut microbiome, which thrives on 'good' bacteria. That good bacteria, in turn, thrives on whole foods that are high in fibre and full of nutrients, including leafy greens, healthy fats and whole grains.
Is there a best diet for Depression?
When someone has depression, what they eat might improve or worsen symptoms. The idea is that eating a diet rich in high-quality foods that provide significant nutrition, including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, may help nourish the brain and protect it from free radicals, or oxidative stress.
In general, it is recommended that we eat a diet that includes fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fish, low fat dairy and olive oil. This type of diet is described as the Mediterranean Diet and studies have shown that the risk of depression is 25% to 35% lower in those who eat this diet.
The compounds within these foods that have been studied, appear to have a positive effect on depressive symptoms.
These include:
• Omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel; • B vitamins, found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts, seeds and dark leafy greens; • Vitamin D, which is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because your body makes vitamin D in the skin when it's exposed to ultraviolet light; • Magnesium, which is a vital nutrient for supporting brain health supports healthy neurons and the manufacture of neurotransmitters the brain's needs, so those cells can relay messages to each other; • Folic acid which is a B vitamin that’s critical to brain health, especially in developing babies; • Zinc, which is also an important nutrient that supports normal neural function; and • Antioxidants, which are found in fruits and vegetables.
Foods can't do it all
Lastly, a dietary regimen alone isn't sufficient to promote good health and you should adopt other "good living habits" that can help keep depression in check, such as a good sleep regime, reducing stress and exercising for at least 30 minutes per day.

Today was one of those days. I woke up in a bad mood, was really irritable all morning, emotionally and physically exhausted, and on the edge of crying the entire day. There was no reason for this (other than maybe the blood moon 🌚) and in the past I would have spent the day sulking and saying woe is me. But know what I did instead? + I listened to personal development. + I reached out to a friend. + I used essential oils. + I dove into my work. + And I came home and put my husband’s oversized fleece on. We are in control of how we react to things and we are in control of our mindset. I’m not saying I am suddenly happy again, but I turned my negative energy into positive energy and didn’t let it ruin my day. Half Smile: “One of my favorite techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy research is the “half-smile.” This CBT technique has been proven to be effective in helping turn around cycles of negative moods, such as depressive episodes. Because emotions are really the combination of thoughts, sensations, and behaviors, changing just one of these components can result in significantly altering the course of the emotion.
Half-smile is a technique borrowed from Buddhism, and it’s quick, easy, and free. Research has shown this technique can improve your mood after only ten minutes of practice. Compare that with the four to six weeks it takes for an antidepressant to start working! Just kidding - it’s definitely not a replacement for medication or therapy, but it can really turn a lousy mood around.
Here’s how it works: Begin to smile with your lips, but stop just when you notice a small amount of tension at the corners of your mouth. If someone were watching you, he/she probably wouldn’t notice any change in your face. It’s a subtle, tiny smile. (If you try to keep up a big toothy grin for ten minutes, nothing will happen other than your face will start to hurt.) Now wear this for ten minutes without stopping, and notice how your mood has shifted. Most people report a significant uptick in their overall mood. If you don’t notice any significant change, some people find it helpful, in addition to the half-smile, to “smile with their eyes.”
The way this works is the bi-directional nature of behavior and emotions. Most of the time, when we experience a positive emotion, such as joy, we smile as a consequence of the joy. But what the most current cognitive-behavioral research as shown time and again, is that it works the other way too. Smile for a few minutes and you feel happy. Furrow your brow and you experience anger. Breathe short, shallow breaths, and you can induce panic. Basically, engage in the behavior and the emotion will follow (aka fake it ‘til you make it).
