We’re still in the planning phase so some things are still undetermined. I hope you all enjoy! 🥹💋

The date is October 24th, 2012 and Cassie couldn’t have asked for an easier shift. 2 hours away from clocking out and absolutely no calls.
Cassie basically held a knife to everyone’s throats once they got halfway through shift. She couldn’t have anyone jinxing them. Not this late in the game. Threatening them one last time before she decided to turn in, she made sure to get extra comfortable.
But all good things must come to an end. Sleeping like a baby in the bunk room, Cassie gets woken up by the call alarm. Just her luck.
Jumping up in a rush, Cassie sleepily shoved her boots on and ran her hand through her hair.
As Cassie ran out to the apparatus floor, she heard an asortmant of sarcastic remarks towards the candidate. Of course he was the jinx.
“Nice goin!” , “Thanks a lot, Candidate.” , “Great job bud!” Most of Truck 81 said as they were gearing up.
“I knew I shouldn’t have fallen asleep.” Cassie said tying her hair back into a low pony before putting the rig in drive.
“Hey, at least you get to test out your new paramedic certification!” Gabby cheered enthusiastically.
“Yeah, yeah, but you’re still my PIC and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”
“Oh my heart!” Dawson playfully adds as they pull up to the scene.
Analyzing the car wreck in front of them, the girls jump out of the rig and into action.
“This isn’t going to be good,” Cassie says quietly to Gabby as they wheel the gurney to the worse car.
“Happy Birthday.” Gabby mutters back making Cassie’s heart drop. Immediately recognizing the car that’s better off, Cassidy begins cussing under her breath before directing her attention back to the people in need.
“61 to main, we’re gonna need another ambulance.” Cassie calls into her radio once they arrive at the car that’s currently upside down.
After a lot of hardwork, and multiple scares, Cassie and Gabby finally get one of the more stable victims to the ambulance.
“Hey Dawson?” Cassie asked anxiously after shutting the door.
“What’s up? We gotta go-”
“My brother was in the accident. I’m gonna guess he was driving the other car, would you be able to take this one back to the hospital? I really need to see him Gabby. I can catch a ride with truck or squad when we’re done-”
“Go.”
“Thank you. So much.” Cassie says running towards the other car she saw her brother step out of.
“What the hell happened!?” Cassie yells shooing off the officer currently trying to talk to him.
“Ma’am, we need to-” The officer tries to butt in,
“Back off!” Cassie yells earning a stern look.
“3 minutes.” The officer says warningly.
Taking a step closer to Justin, Cassidy pulls his shoulder so he’s fulling facing her. Immediately catching the stench of alcohol on Justin’s breath, she freezes.
“Justin!” She whisper yells finally getting eye contact from his end.
“What?” He asks through gritted teeth.
“What the hell happened?” She asks again hitting his shoulder.
“Just- Get out of here! I d-don’t need you, and you’re s-stupid pep talks right now.” He slurs belligerently.
“You’ve been 21 for two weeks Justin. Two weeks, and you can’t even drive sober on my birthday!? What if you were the one half-dead, hanging upside down over there, hm? You think-” Cassie stops talking at the swift thwap ringing through her ears.
Feeling her hands now on the ground, she registers the stinging metallic taste in her mouth. After a few seconds of gathering her thoughts, Cassidy stands up straight. Touching her bottom lip and looking at her fingers, she realizes she’s the one bleeding. Blinking a few times, Cassie looks back at Justin who’s face is truly blank. Unreadible.
He hit her. He fucking back handed her. Cassie looks down at the class ring on Justin’s right middle finger, now laced in blood. Chuckling a little at his audacity, Cassie turns around slowly because she can’t look him in the face right now.
It all happened so much faster than the slap. She didn’t even feel herself wind up, but she did feel the connection of her fist with Justin’s nose, Justin who is now knocked on his ass. Solely because he’s drunk and doesn’t have much balance. Stopping at the 180 mark that Cassie threw her body in, she goes back around bending over holding her fist.
Looking slowly at her hand that is now purple and swollen Cassie lets out a slow hiss. Probably broken.
“Hey Lady! What the hell!” The officer from before says picking Justin up and walking him over to a nearby bench.
“Cassidy!” She heard an all too familiar voice call out. Too busy nursing her hand to truly turn around and give him the time of day she settles for rolling her eyes.
“Cassidy Jordan!” The voice calls out again, but this time closer and still approaching.
Finally standing up and looking at her father, Cassidy frowns once she meets his eyes.
“What the hell is going on!” His raspy voice yells, making her slightly wince.
“Over here. Now.” He says more quiet this time and walking away. Mindlessly following him Cassie begins walking.
Expectantly looking at Cassidy once they’re in a more private location, Voight eventually scoffs.
Still giving no reaction Cassie frowns at the ground.
“Don’t give me that.” Voight says pointing a finger at her.
“I didn’t even do anything!”
“Right, and your busted lip and probably broken hand lives up to that huh?” He asks with a raised brow.
“Justin is drunk off his ass and caused a car accident, yet you’re over here scolding me for retaliating in self-defense?” Cassie asks trying to turn this around of her father, unsuccessfully.
“I know what Justin is, but you know better. What were you doing over there anyway, didn’t your partner leave?”
“Yeah. But I wanted to check on him at least. He’s a screw-up but he’s my brother that’s a screw-up.” She says crossing her arms and looking away.
“Look. I know this is not the most ideal way to spend your birthday, I get that-”
“Do you though? Do you get that? Because for all we know, this could’ve been reversed and Justin’s car could’ve been the one hanging upside down off a pillar.” She says back at her father.
“Yes. I do know. I will handle it, Cassie.” Voight says unconvincingly at his daughter.
“He fucked up. He’s been 21 for two weeks and this would be considered what? His fourth or fifth DUI? He’s been on this road since he was 15! But this time don’t forget the possible vehicular manslaughter if either of those victims die!” Cassidy finally screams at her father.
“You need to stop.” He says looking around at all of the eyes on you guys, despite being in a private location.
“You need to do something about this, or I will.” Cassie threatens.
“What do you mean, you will?”
“I’m working this scene Dad. I have to make an incident report. You need to let the cops take him in now, or I will say everything that needs to be said in that report. Your choice.”
“Cassidy, you will do no such thing. Do you understand me?”
“You need to let him learn! You can’t be there everytime he screws up to save his ass! He isn’t going to change knowing Daddy’s going to bail him out everytime he gets in trouble. We both know it, so help him.” Cassie finally scolds leaving Voight speechless. It’s not often his daughter talks to him this way.
As Cassie starts to walk away, her father’s voice stops her once again.
“Don’t do anything Cassidy. I mean it. I’ll take care of it.”
Pausing in her steps at his words, she lets them sink in until she keeps walking.
Finding lieutenant Casey to ask him for a ride, she stops behind him and the cop from earlier.
“Look. Detective Voight, behind me - the guy in the jacket. That was his son driving the car.” Cassie overhears the cop tell Casey.
“Voight? Like Cassidy Voight?” Matt asks not knowing you’re behind them.
“Yep. Can’t tell you how many incidents that detectives gotten his kids out of.” The cop now says walking away making Cassie roll her eyes. The only thing Hank Voight has bailed Cassie out of was shoplifting a chapstick in the 6th grade.
“Hey, Lieutentant Casey? Can I catch a ride with 81?” Cassie asks startling Matt out of his transe.
“Where’s Dawson?” He asks now walking away from the car and Cassie.
Quickly following behind, Cassie catches up to him.
“Um, she took one of the crash victims to the hospital. I stayed behind.” She says not disclosing anymore information.
“Hop in.” He says once they reach the truck.
A few days later Cassie still hadn’t heard from her father or her brother, and at this point she didn’t know what to do. Once she got to the firehouse though, she needed to figure it out.
“Voight, Casey, my office now.” Chief Boden said causing the pair to briefly glance at each other before following Boden into his office.
“I don’t have either of your incident reports from the crash last shift. Is there something I need to know?” He asks causing them to glance at each other again.
Before either of them were able to say anything he pointed to his desk, “Get it done. You have until the end of shift.” When Boden glances away from them, Cassie takes this as her chance to leave.
“Cassie, wait up.” Casey said calling after her.
Cassie finally stopped in front of Casey’s room and waited for him to lead the way.
“Okay, you need to explain,” Matt started as Cassie stared at her shoes.
“I don’t know what to do.” Cassie finally whispers, voice slightly breaking.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I love my brother and my father, don’t get me wrong. They’ve been my only family my whole life. Especially since my mom died 10 years ago, but I can’t help but feel so guilty for the other family.” Cassie finally breaks. Tears flowing down her face, Matt stood up to give her a hug before she pushed him away and wiped her tears.
“I told my dad that he needed to do something this time. He couldn’t just bail Justin out, Justin needed to learn. I told him that if he doesn’t then I will, that I will write the report and submit it as the truth. But he shut me down. I don’t know what he would do if I did, I can’t do it, Matt.” Cassie finally says looking up at him.
“Cassie, yes you can. If we both tell the truth in those reports then that family can finally get justice.” Matt said sitting back down at his desk looking up at Cassie.
Taking a few seconds to let his words sink in. Cassie realized she can’t betray her family like that.
“No, Matt, I can’t. I want nothing more than to bring justice to that family I really do. But I can’t be the reason my family breaks. Call me selfish, but I can’t bear the pain of being shunned by the only two people I have left. I’m sorry Matt.” Cassie finally says leaving him speechless. Then leaving his room.
A little while later, Cassie went to go talk to Boden. To tell him the truth and maybe ask for a little advice as to what to do. But to her surprise when she came to his office. She found Detective Antonio Dawson, Matt Casey, and Boden all having a little chat. Knocking on Boden’s door, he glanced at the Lieutenant and Detective before waving her to come in.
“Cassie,” He started but was quickly interrupted by her.
“Chief, I want you to know I’m on your side. I know what kind of things my father has done to bail my brother out of his idiotic mistakes, and I don’t support it. But you guys sitting here and gossiping about my family is a new low. If you guys are planning something, I at least need to know.”
“Why? So you can turn around and tell him everything?” Antonio speaks up earning a glare from Cassie.
“No. So I can help you guys do it right.”
“And why don’t you help? You know what really happened so report it.” Boden says making Cassie glance back at him.
“Look, call me selfish, but they’re my family. My only family. I can’t in good conscious turn my brother in and have my father hate me, but I can’t in good conscious let that family suffer from my brother’s wrong doings. Let me help you guys. That way justice is being brought for that family, and my brother finally gets punished for his actions. But not because of me.” Cassie finally says crossing her arms over her chest.
“Alright, well a buddy of mine who works out of Voight’s precinct said nothing’s come up in witness statements.” Antonio says
“So you’re trying to tell me no one else saw his kid drunk.” Boden adds making Cassie bite her lip anxiously.
“Hell yes, other people saw his kid drunk. But they were other cops who weren’t about to go up against Voight.” Antonio
Still listening Cassie opts to pace in the open part of Boden’s office. It’s what she does when she’s thinking.
“Well I would rather my guy not be the only one with his head above the foxhole on this one.” Boden says to which everyone agrees with.
“Look, and I’m not proud to admit this, but if Gabby were in your shoes for this one. I would tell her to stay out of it.” Antonio says now looking at Cassie.
“The passenger in the other car isn’t going to walk again.” Matt speaks up with news Cassie hadn’t even heard yet.
“Antonio’s right. Going against my father is a death wish. But it needs to happen. Justin is…Justin is sick. He needs help. I think this might be the only wake up call he’ll be able to have.” Cassie finally admits making herself tear up again.
At that a call for Ambulance 61 had Cassie rushing out of the room with an anxious feeling eating her from the inside out.
“Greg Duffy? I guess he was in a car accident the other day that you guys responded to?” Nicki comes in and announces to everyone in the common room. Cassie and Gabby had just gotten back from the call, to which Gabby ignored her for the majority of.
Peaking Cassie’s attention she gets up and follows everyone else out to the apparatus floor.
“Sorry to barge in on you like this, but my wife made this for you guys. We really appreciate what you did. And we know damn well it could’ve been worse If the car had tipped over, so thank you.” Greg says making Cassie’s heart sink as she looked at the beautifully homemade chocolate cake he had in front of him.
“How’s your son?” Matt asks looking over at you then back to Greg.
“Yeah, well…Mikey’s got a tough road ahead of him. But we’re gonna make it. We’re gonna be all right.” He says sorrowly looking down at the fresh cake his wife had baked for them.
“The other reason I came here is, I don’t know if theres anything you guys do in terms of what you saw, or piece together, based on what the accident scene looked like. But, the police report came back saying I ran a red light causing the accident. And uh, that’s, that’s not what happened, and I’m kind of at a loss in terms of how to fight it.”
At Greg’s words, Cassie knew what she had to do. She couldn’t be selfish any longer.
With Casey in Boden’s office they both finished their incident reports with Boden to proofread them after.
“Last paragraph.” Matt said as both him and Cassie hand Boden their papers.
“Visibily drunk. Smelled alcohol on his breath. Saw open containers on the passenger seat,” Boden said looking at Matt then taking Cassie’s paper.
“I can assume it’s around the same thing for you?” He asks to which she quickly nodded.
“Yes sir.”

Next part
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
When you entered the police department, you felt many eyes on you. You wore clothes that were cut and dirty and you looked hurt.
You looked up at one of the police officer, a woman who was behind the desk. You guessed was a sergeant and she was around fifty years old; she immediately went around the desk to help you.
“Oh my God, what happened dear?” She immediately asked you, helping you staying on your feet; you were so weak and you were about to cry sooner or later, even if you were trying to resist. She helped you and took you in one of the interrogatory rooms, telling you that she would have called a detective to help you.
After some minutes a tall guy entered the room and he immediately sat in front of you with a warm smile on his face, trying to reassure you in some way.
“I’m Detective Jay Halstead. They’ve told me that you need me. What’s your name? Can you tell me what happened to you?”
You could still feel those hands on you, you could feel the pain and every single beg you yelled, asking him to let you go, asking the guy who took you to have mercy.
You were shaking but you couldn’t control it.
“I’m y/n… a-and I…. I was kidnapped.” You whispered, deciding to start from the easiest part of the story.
“When?” He immediately asked you, writing something on a notebook. “Where and how? I need some details to find the guy who did this to you. Tell me everything you remember and we’ll find him, okay?”
You nodded, still shaking and starting to cry.
“It was Friday when he took me… i-i don’t…. I d-don’t know what day is it today…. I was kidnapped Friday evening after work… i-i stopped to a fuel station and… and when i was entering the car again i felt a hand on my mouth and something cold against my throat.” You whispered.
He listened carefully and he wrote everything on the paper, looking sometimes at you and smiling a little bit to encourage you to continue.
“He had a knife and… he told me to get into his car and… and to be quiet or… or he would have cut my throat in an half. “
“Did you see him in the face?” Detective Halstead asked you, looking at you. “Do you remember anything that can help us finding him?”
You shook your head, crying harder.
“N-no!” You sobbed, feeling guilty. “I just did what he told me to do… he… he said that i wanted this… that i should have expected this… and after that he blindfolded me”
Jay’s eyebrows frowned.
“What did he mean by that? Did something strange happen to you the days before Friday?”
You nod, crying. “Y-Yes.” You sob.
It was all your fault.
You should have known
You should’ve have done something
You should have gone to the police station sooner
“Tell me about that.” He said, looking at you. “And don’t worry, you can take your time.”
You nodded, staying silent for a while before answering him.
“I had the feeling of being followed for almost a week but i thought i was just paranoid. And than i found some flowers at my front door… I thought it was just some pranks of some kids… i didn’t think…. It’s all my fault” you cried.
“No, no no” he reassured you, taking one of your hands and squeezing it slightly. “It’s not your fault at all… but everything you will tell me will help us getting him in jail, okay? I know it’s hard but you have to be strong for that”
You perfectly knew that. You knew that you needed to tell everything but it was so fucking difficult. Everything that happened to you, everything that he did to you. And you didn’t fought back, you just let that happen.
“After the flowers i got a call from an unknown number… it was Friday’s morning and all i could have heard was someone breathing heavily on the speaker. I was so scared and i immediately hanged up. I wanted to came here but i was late for work so… so i decided that i could come here on Saturday when i would have been at home and i would have had more time to come here…. But that night he took me. He kidnapped me and I didn’t do anything. I wasn’t able to see him nor the road he made to reach his place. It was dirty and the scent of that place was horrible… i think it was an abandoned warehouse. “
Detective Halstead was writing everything you were saying and he kept asking you questions, giving you also the time to prepare yourself psychologically.
“What happened then?”
“He tied me at something, I don’t know with what but i was lying down on some old mattress. He… he ripped my clothes…” you pointed him your clothes that were ripped and dirty. “He… he r-raped me”
It took some time to admit it.
It was so fucking difficult to say.
It was so fucking painful to admit.
You were raped.
You were raped.
You were raped
But why you? Why he took you? Why he let you go? But did he let you go? What happened? Why you were still alive? Why weren’t you dead?
Maybe it would have been easier if you would’ve died in there.
“I’m sorry for everything that had happened to you and believe me, I wouldn’t ask you so many questions if i don’t really think that they can help us finding him… can you tell me in details what he did to you? How many time did he rape you?”
You were trying to figure out how many days you spent in there but being blindfolded didn’t help and he didn’t even bring you some food to help you understand which part of the day it was. You couldn’t even tell what day it was when you escaped, you didn’t know anything, nor even where you were. You just entered the first police station you found, you didn’t even know in what part of the city you were.
“He raped me multiple times… i don’t know how many but he often raped me during those days. He bit my breasts and… and he used force. I was so scared and it hurt so much, i just wanted that to be finished. Every single time i stay silent praying him to finish with me as soon as he could.”
Detective Halstead wrote everything on his notebook and than he looked up at you.
“Did he use a condom ?”
You cried harder, hiding your face beneath your hands.
“N-no… he didn’t, he… never did” you sobbed, crying.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. You’re safe now” he said, getting up and walking towards you, slowly and calmly to be sure not to scare you.
You got goosebumps of fear but you didn’t stepped back. You were so tired: you just wanted to go home and sleep and after telling all of what happened to the detective you felt even more tired.
“Can you tell me everything you can remember about him? Maybe a description? I know you didn’t see him but you felt him, right?”
You immediately understood what he was talking about and you thought about every time you felt him, and you revived all again and again, trying to remember as many details as you could. “When he kidnapped me and i felt his hand on my mouth i also felt his chin against my head so he was definitely taller than me… i’m 170 cm so he would be around 190 cm i guess. He lowered at my height to be able to whisper in my hear and when he kissed me or bit me i felt that he had a beard… not a normal one, it was like a goatee… yes, I think he had a goatee.”
“You’re doing great, can you remember anything else?” Jay asked, writing everything down.
“I saw only his hand on my mouth… he was white. And i think it was thin but muscular, just not to much. He was strong though. T-That’s all i can remember.”
“It’s perfect, you did great.” He reassured you. “How did you escape?”
“I spent days trying to free myself from the rope that was keeping me tied up on the mattress and when he came today’s morning and when he said that i need to do a shower after i thought something was wrong. He didn’t even let me go to pee in the previous days. When I couldn’t hear his footsteps anymore i finally freed myself, i took the blindfold off and you just ran outside and ran… and ran. I didn’t looked back or near me, i just ran trying to add distance between me and him. I don’t know for how many time i ran, i just know that at some point i read “police” and i came immediately in here.”
Detective Halstead wrote everything again, then he looked up at you.
“You were so strong and brave, okay? And now you’re safe, i will be with you okay? But i need to accompany you to the hospital to do a rape test. It will help us knowing the DNA of the man that did all of this to you, okay?”
You immediately tried to got up to follow him at the hospital but the second you got on your feet you felt all the tiredness on you. You couldn’t even stand up.
All the adrenaline went down and you felt pain in every single muscle.
You collapsed on the floor and Detectjve Halstead immediately ran towards you, calling for help and for an ambulance.
“Hailey! Call for an ambulance right now!” He yelled towards the mirror, looking at you again and giving you a small slap on your cheeks to keep you awake. “It’s okay, it’s okay i’m here with you, y/n. Resist, an ambulance is in the way, okay? Just stay with me.”
“I-I’m so tired.” You said, whispering. You looked at the detective in front of you and you tried to remember his eyes; he came there to help you and you wanted to remember him at all costs because he was your savior, after all. You saw in him the chance to find some justice and in that moment he was also trying to keep you awake while the ambulance arrived.
“I know, i know you’re tired but you have to resist and keep your eyes open for me. Look at me okay? Resist.”
You tried.
You really tried to resist but it was too much.
You were too weak.
The last things you remembered before the dark fell upon you were Jay’s eyes, then everything went dark.
And you couldn’t feel anything anymore.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A knock on the door startled Severide as he was finishing his report from the last call. Glancing at the glass door, he saw Alie waving her hand as she flashed him a small smile.
“Hey.” He whispered, opening the door.
“Hey. Can I come in?” She kept her voice down, afraid she would wake up the team sleeping in the bunk room.
Nodding his head, Severide opened the door a little further so Alie could step inside his office, then closed it again. Seating back on his chair, he watched Ailie get comfortable in his bed.
“You okay?” He asked, cocking his head to the side, not sure what she wanted to talk about.
“Yeah. I wanted to make sure you are okay, actually.” She confessed, noticing a frown appearing in Severide’s face. “I’m not blind, Sev. I noticed your reaction when Sylvie came running inside the firehouse with another letter from Casey. What was that about?”
Biting the inside of his cheek, Severide looked outside the window, avoiding Alie’s big brown eyes, as the same thoughts consumed his mind, over and over again.
“Sev, please, talk to me.” Sitting closer to her friend, Alie’s lips curved slightly into a smirk. “Did you get upset cause Casey didn’t send you a letter too?” She playfully asked, but Severide didn’t laugh. As he turned his face to look at Alie, she was surprised to see tears in his eyes.
“Stella, she-...” He shook his head and bit his lip, struggling to put his feelings into words. “She doesn't reply to my texts or my calls. When she does, it’s always something short and simple, she doesn’t even want to talk to me. And I don’t know what to do.” He confessed, blinking away the tears, trying to look strong.
“I’m so sorry, Sev.” Alie whispered, gently squeezing his hand. “Maybe she’s just busy with the program. I’m sure everything will be just fine when she comes back-”
“That’s the thing.” He interrupted. “I don’t know if she’s coming back.” He sounded almost angry, but looking into his eyes Alie could see how sad, broken he was.
“What do you mean?”
Wiping his tears with the sleeve of his jacket, Severide took a deep breath. “Boden wanted Stella to be the new lieutenant on Truck 81, but she didn't reply to his calls either.  I don’t think she wants to be a lieutenant anymore. I don’t think she wants to come back to 51, or to me.” He confessed with a shaky voice. Putting those words out in the open felt like a punch in his stomach, making him sick with just the thought of not being with Stella again.
“Hey, don’t say that.” Alie shook her head, wiping Severide’s fresh tears. “Kelly, she loves you! You’re just going through a tough time in your relationship, but I’m sure everything will be okay.”
“I’m not so sure anymore.” He whispered back.
-/-/-
“Jones?” Pelham called, entering the common room. Looking around, he saw her exiting Severide’s office. Making his way towards her, Pelham gently knocked on the bunk room door, not wanting to wake up the whole team. “Jones? There’s a woman on the apparatus floor wanting to talk to you. It sounded urgent.” He confessed, approaching the firefighter.
Confused, Alie frowned. Besides the fact that it was late, Alie wasn’t used to getting visitors at the firehouse - or anywhere, really. Thanking the lieutenant, Alie made her way to meet the mysterious woman outside the firehouse.
“Can I help you?” Alie asked, approaching the woman who had her back to Alie. As the woman turned around, Alie couldn’t believe her eyes. Taking a step back, she took a shaky breath as her head started to spin. She felt sick.
“Hi, baby.” The woman’s voice was soft as a sympathetic smile appeared on her face. She took a step closer, making Alie take a step back, involuntarily. She aged from the last time Alie saw her. She had more wrinkles than Alie could remember. She had lost a significant amount of weight, probably because of her drinking problems or the death of her husband - or both. Her features had changed. She looked small, fragile. If it wasn’t for those eyes that haunted Alie in her dreams, she wouldn’t have recognized her own mother.
Looking at her mom with side eyes, it took all the strength in her body to make Alie speak. “Wha-What are you doing here??”
“You didn’t reply to any of my texts, or my calls.” Slightly shrugging her shoulders, the woman flashed an apologetic smile. “I thought I could stop by to see you-”
“Well, you can’t. I told you to stay away from me.” Alie cut her off. “Now, please, go away and don’t come back.” She turned around to go back to the firehouse but was stopped by a hand grabbing her arm.
“Alison, please!” The woman begged, staring Alie in the eye. “You can’t avoid me forever. We’re family-”
“DON’T!” Alie shouted as she released her arm. “You don’t get to use that word!” Her chest rose and fell with rapid breaths. “I don’t consider you family. Not anymore.”
Shaking her head, her mom could feel the tears threatening to fall down her cheeks. “Alie, please, don’t say that. I’m your mother, I’ll always be your family!”
The lack of emotion was clear as Alie's steady voice came out just above a whisper. “You are DEAD to me.” As her lips lightly curved into a smirk, she took a step closer. “I hope Stephen is burning in hell right now.”
“Alison!” Her mom slapped her in the face, she couldn’t believe those words. “He was like a father to you!”
“HE DESTROYED ME!” Alie shouted, feeling her cheek burn. “I was just a little girl and he RUINED me!” Shaking her head, Alie quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand. “And what did you do, huh? NOTHING! You let him do that to me. You chose your disgusting, rapist husband over your own daughter! You never believed me when I told you what he used to do to me!” Alie could feel her throat hurt. She didn’t care if someone could hear her yelling, she didn’t mind the tears running down her cheeks. All she felt was anger, pain, and she just wanted to let it all out. As she let out a long sigh, she looked down at her mother in disgust. “How could you? How can a mother let someone do that to her child? Her baby girl? I trusted him, I trusted you.” Letting out a sob, she ran her hands down her face. She took advantage of her mother's silence to let it all out of her chest. “For so long, every time I used to close my eyes, all I could see was his face. All I could smell was his cheap cologne and the mix of bourbon and cigar. He haunted me for so long. But not anymore!” Standing closer, just a few inches from her mom’s face, Alie screamed. “I WANT YOU TO ROT IN HELL! BOTH OF YOU!”
Her mom stood there in silence, her body shaking - from crying or from fear, no one could tell. Taking a step back, Alie sniffled, cleaning her eyes and nose with the sleeve of her jacket.
“I hate you.” Alison whispered with gritted teeth, looking down at the woman who brought her to the world. “Get out of here and don’t you dare to come back.”
Nodding her head in understanding, her mother turned around and left, crying all the way back to her car. Finally feeling like she could breathe again, Alie walked two steps before she collapsed on the floor. Letting out a low, desperate groan, she felt two arms hugging her body in a tight embrace.
“It’s okay. She’s gone.” Pelham’s voice was soft as he spoke in her ear, his hand running up and down her back. “You’re safe now, I promise.” He whispered, feeling her tears soaking the fabric of his shirt.
For the first time in years, Alie didn’t flinch when she felt a male hand touching her body. Instead, she believed in his words when he told her she was safe. And that's exactly how she felt. Her muscles relaxed under the warmth of Pelham’s embrace. With her head leaned against his chest, she sobbed like a little girl, scared of the monster under her bed. The monster is gone now, but he will always be present in her memories.
Pelham knew Alie was going through something. He just never expected to be this. He didn’t mean to hear the whole conversation, but he did hear Alie’s screams and picked up some pieces. He felt disgusted. He couldn’t imagine what was going through Alie’s mind in this moment, but he knew she needed someone. Even if this someone was a man she barely knew.
Once her breaths were even and she had stopped crying, Alie lifted her head from Pelham’s chest. As their eyes met, her cheeks blushed with embarrassment and she quickly pulled away from him. He shouldn’t have seen her like this. Broken. Fragile.
“I-I should go.” Alie quickly mumbled, standing up. Not looking back, she ran to the bathroom, locking the door right behind her as she muffled her soft cries with the back of her hand.
-/-/-
"You know," Gallo took a seat on the common room table to eat his cereal, then pointed at Pelham with his spoon. "Once Kidd comes back, are you still going to be our lieutenant?"
"I don't know-"
"No, he's not." Severide interrupted, making his way to the coffee pot.
Gallo already regretted making that question, as he felt the tension in the room rising. Shaking his head, Ritter cursed under his breath, whispering a sarcastic 'good job, buddy' as he sent Gallo a thumbs up.
Staring at Severide's back, Pelham licked his lips and sighed. "Chief Boden reached out for her, asking if she wanted to be the new lieutenant, but she didn't answer. She hasn't shown any interest."
"That doesn't mean you get the job." The squad lieutenant replied before making his way to his office.
"Really, Gallo!? What is wrong with you?" Violet whispered, slapping Gallo in the arm.
Playing with the food on his plate, Pelham couldn't help but think about Gallo's question. What was gonna happen to him once Kidd comes back wasn't really a mystery. Pelham was just an interim lieutenant. If Kidd wanted the position, Boden would give it to her right away. Pelham knew that, and he understood why. Kidd had been working at this firehouse for years now, and she was loved by everyone on the team. Pelham didn't stand a chance.
"Hey, Jones!" Mouch greeted her with a big smile as she entered the firehouse.
Hearing that name, Pelham looked up with hopeful eyes and a shy smile, seeing the person who made his days better in this firehouse. However, he knew she's been avoiding him since last night.
Flashing Mouch a weak smile, Alie stopped dead in her tracks once she locked eyes with the lieutenant sitting at the table. Quickly turning around, she rushed to the locker room, not seeing how fast Pelham's smile faded away.
Closing her locker once she grabbed what she needed, Alie stood face to face with the lieutenant, who was leaning against the lockers.
“You don’t have to avoid me, Jones.” He crossed his arms over his chest.
“I’m not avoiding you.” She quickly replied, walking past him.
“Then why are you running away from me?” Pelham followed her to the bunk room, walking right behind her. “Is this about what happened the other night?” He asked with a sigh.
Alie quickly turned around. “Yes, okay? You had no right to hear that conversation!”
“You were screaming!" His voice rose but his features softened when he saw Alie flinch. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay, I wasn’t eavesdropping.” He spoke just above a whisper.
“But you listened to a conversation that didn’t concern you.” The hurt and disappointment were clear in her voice. “Now, please, stop looking at me with those pity eyes. I don’t need your pity, Pelham.”
“So now, what?" He frowned. "I can’t be concerned about you? I can’t make sure my friend is okay? Oh, no, I’m sorry. I forgot we’re not friends.” Pelham let his arms dramatically fall to his sides as a long sigh passed through his lips. “Jesus, Jones. I keep trying to get close to you, only to be pushed away every goddamn time!” Shaking his head, Pelham walked past Alie and left the room.
Swallowing the lump on her throat, Alie bit the inside of her cheek as Pelham's words replayed in her head. She knew he was right, she really was pushing him away. But that's what she did to every man that got too close to her. She kept her tough posture but…on the inside she was softly pleading for him to come back, to hold her one more time and tell her everything would be okay.
-/–/-
“What happened this time?” Brett asked, serving herself a cup of coffee, as Alie stormed into the room.
“Pelham happened.” Alie mumbled, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned on the counter, next to her friend.
“Uhh, I’ve seen this before.” A smirk appeared on Brett’s face as she stirred her coffee. “You two will end up sleeping together.” She took a sip from her coffee and saw the way Alie almost gagged.
“You gotta be kidding me, right? There’s nothing going on between me and Pelham. It was just a kiss, which I already regret.” Alie confessed with a scoff. “To be honest, I think we do hate each other.”
“Uh-hum, sure.” Brett nodded her head, sipping her coffee. “I’ll pretend I believe that.”

I just really liked the parallelism beween the two beatings, the one suffered by Matt Casey in episode 1.05 and the one by Kelly Severide in episode 10.21, of Chicago Fire:
° they both get ambushed and jumped, near a trash site; ° more than one assailant; ° they both fight back but are overpowered and get repeatedly kicked; ° they get checked in hospital; ° their girlfriends are there for them; ° no broken bones, only pain and bruises (unfortunally!); ° Boden comes in to check on them in hospital.
Enjoy!

Expectantly looking at the two people before him, Sergeant Voight rests his eyes on his daughter.
Trying to analyze and prepare for the choice she makes he studies her face. He studies her brown eyes, long brown hair, her beautifully square jaw and soft features. He always admired his daughter, she was a carbon copy of his late wife Camille.
Stepping back to lightly sit on the edge of his desk, Voight clasps his hands together in his lap still waiting for an answer.
Lightly chuckling out of disbelief, Cassie looks over at Jay who was still harboring the same reaction.
"Well?" Her father finally asks.
"I-I don't know." The girl says shocked.
"Sarge, don't you think it might be a little too soon, considering..." Jay interjected with his arms crossed in front of him.
"Considering everything that happened a week ago?" Voight asks assuming the rest of the other man's sentence.
"Uh, yeah." Jay says frankly.
"Well also considering we've been down a detective in the unit for a week now, and Antonio hasn't had a partner, I think now is an appropriate time to fill that spot. Look, I'm not trying to replace Willhite. That's not what's happening. Willhite was an extraordinary detective and what happened was tragic. But I would be doing a dishonor to my unit if I leave an open spot. That means we have one less person on busts, we have one less person to help solve cases, and we have one less person putting bad guys behind bars. Now, I see someone that I trust and that I have faith in to live up to Willhite's reputation and thrive in this environment. So Cassie, what do you say?" Voight looks at his daughter again who looks even more intimidated than she was the first time he offered.
A million thoughts were running through Cassie's head, and yet she still couldn’t pick one and take the job. Being a paramedic gives her a rush, its fills a hole inside her that aches to help. But so did being a police officer at one point. Yeah she fell into a routine and couldn’t commit to being a patrolman, but this is a completely different field. This is becoming a detective.
Cassie had grown up around detectives her whole life. She knew the ins and outs of how they did their job, she understood the consequences of the hours and how some cases take a larger toll than others. But she also knew the effects of being too ‘in’ on the job. How easily it is to overwhelm yourself, and completely indulge in the rush that puts the bad people away. That’s what scared her. She knew her father wasn’t around a lot when she was growing up because of this job, so a piece of her does resent it. She resents the nights they would eat dinner without him, the Sunday’s he wasn’t at church. She resented the birthday parties and minor holidays he would miss, she resented it all. One of the main reasons she hasn’t made a choice yet is because one of her biggest fears is turning into her father. But also one of her biggest goals is to do that very thing.
“I say I need a little more time.” She finally admits.
“Okay. You have two days,” Voight says standing up and walking over to his chair.
“Okay? Thats it?” She asks confused.
“That’s it. You need time, I gave you time.” He said sitting down and opening a case file.
Cassie looked at Jay again who was biting the inside of his cheek.
Looking back at her father who isn’t paying any attention to the pair now she rubbed the back of her neck.
“I- um, yeah, okay. I’ll let you know.” She said turning to walking out the door but Jay was blocking it.
Staring into space and not noticing the girl trying to leave, Jay finally moved once she cleared her throat muttering a quick ‘excuse me.’
“What was that about?” Erin asked as the pair walked out of Voight’s office catching the rest of intelligence’s attention.
Cassie walked closer to the other girl before disclosing what just happened.
“He just offered me a job.” She said emotionlessly crossing her arms and staring daggers into Lindsay’s eyes. Cassie didn’t say it loud enough for the rest of the unit to hear, but by Erin’s reaction they knew it was big.
“Are you serious!?” Erin shouted catching everyone’s attention again making Cassie’s eyes grow wide.
“Shhh,” the girl said glancing around at their audience. “C’mon.” She finally said bowing her head and walking out of the office with Erin following her.
Once they stepped outside the district to catch some fresh air, Cassie broke. Full pacing, chewing her lips, and lightly pinching her bicep with her crossed arms.
“He offered me a job!” She finally shouted looking at her just as shocked sister. The only difference is, Lindsay doesn’t show it as obviously.
“What are you going to do?” Erin asked sitting down on the bench.
Stopping in her tracks Cassie turns to do the same. Now instead of pacing, her leg is restlessly bouncing against the bench seat, slightly annoying Erin.
“I don’t know. I just got my paramedic certification and I’ve been promoted to PIC. I absolutely adore my partner, Sylvie Brett. The environment has relaxed since Matt and Dad have worked out their issues, I just, I’m at a loss right now.” She said resting her elbows on her knees.
“Okay, so what are some pros and cons of becoming a detective right now.” Erin pressed now rubbing circles against the other girls back.
“Well, I’ve already been through the academy and worked the streets, so I’d just come directly upstairs if I transfer. I get to work closer with you, Dad, and Jay. The hours seem pretty shit though,”
“And 24-48 hour shifts are any better?” Erin asked chuckling.
“You’re right.” Cassie said quietly.
“But I won’t get to wear my 5.11’s anymore.” Cassie said sadly looking over at her sister.
“What is that?”
“The EMS pants.”
“And?”
“And they made my butt look good. Sue me.”
Bursting into a fit of laughter, the girls took a few minutes to recollect their thoughts and calm down. All of the previous worries leaving Cassie’s mind, all except for one.
“What if I don’t have what it takes?” Cassie asked sitting up straight and looking dead ahead of her.
“In what way?”
“What if I won’t be able to solve the crimes or actually put people away? What if I’m just the weak link that’s going to make the whole unit drown?” She asks quieter truly unsure.
“If you didn’t have what it takes, do you really think Hank would’ve offered you the job?” Erin asked.
“Out of pity? Probably.” Cassie said knowing it wasn’t true.
“No. If you didn’t have what it took to be a good cop, Hank would not put the whole unit in jeopardy just to make you feel better in some way. Especially not out of pity.” Erin said looking over at her sister who knows better.
“How am I supposed to just quit my other job? Just walk in and say, ‘Hey here’s my two week notice, but scratch that and make it my last shift notice because instead of being a paramedic I’m gonna be a detective in a special unit! Don’t hate me, I know it’s only my third time switching my whole career field but you know, yolo!’”
“Precisely.” Erin joked earning an eye roll from Cassie.
Exactly two days later on the dot, Cassie had a plan.
Walking into 51, Cassie went straight to Chief Boden’s office.
“Sir, can I speak with you?” She asked knocking on his slightly cracked door.
“Yeah, come on in.” He said waving her in and taking his glasses off.
“So what’s this about? You’re not on shift until tomorrow.” He said as he watched her get comfortable in the seat before him.
“I-uh,” Cassie chuckled a little as she tried to fan her face so tears won’t fall. Taking a deep breath before continuing she looked her Chief in the eye and flashed a sympathetic smile. Taking the resignation slip out of her coat pocket, she layed the document on his desk.
“Cassie,” He said almost breathlessly as he stared at the pink slip before him.
“If this is about what happened a few days ago, you can take a few shifts off. You know, decompress. Cope. You don’t have-”
“It’s not about that,” Cassie interrupted.
“It’s not about that situation, or you, or anyone else here at 51. You guys are my family and I will forever cherish the experiences and connections I’ve made here.” Taking a pause Cassie glanced down at her now bleeding cuticles as she was picking at them nervously.
“As you may know, I used to be a cop at the 31st district. I completed the academy, and I was a patrolman for two years. In the middle of that, I realized that, that uniform was not for me. I realized I had another calling, and that was to be a paramedic. Thats why for the last three years I’ve worked my ass off, pardon my language, to become an EMT then a Paramedic, and now a PIC. But after what happened, they let me in the room to help question Lullo. To help get the confession from him, and I did. And it was euphoric. To be the one to help put someone behind bars that deserved it, that was my calling. That was my original intention of becoming a cop, and that’s why, when I got the job offer to become a detective, to continue my law enforcement career, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Becoming a paramedic has been the best thing in my life, and I will forever be indebted to you, and everyone else that helped that dream come true. But I know becoming a detective, and doing real work besides patrolling the streets, that’s my life’s purpose.” Cassie finally said wiping a few stray tears.
Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment, Boden didn’t know what to say.
“As much as I admire your adaptability, and your ability to find purpose in so many things in life, I’ve got to say I’m disappointed. I’m obviously sad to see you go, I truly thought you had a big future here, and being a paramedic in general. Because you’re good at it. You’ve got the guts and the leadership skills to take charge and be the person everyone else looks up too in this community, but I understand you have to follow your gut. I understand you have bigger things to accomplish in life. Cassie, you’re going to do amazing no matter where you work, no matter what you do. I will always be here for you if you need anything, but I want you to consider your decision one last time. Because once I file this paper, you will never be a paramedic again. Not unless you go through the courses and training again. Do you understand that?” He finally asks looking at the girl.
Taking a pause and truly thinking everything over again. Cassie reluctantly nods.
“I understand.” She says now earning a slow nod from the man.
“Then I wish you well. You’re going to do great things.” He finally says standing up at the same time as Cassie and giving her a brief hug.
“Cassie wait,” He calls out making her stop in her tracks, “have you told anyone?”
“No.”
“Do you want to? That way you can break the news?”
Taking a deep breath and thinking it over, Cassie knew she wouldn’t be able to go through with this if she did, so in the most selfish way possible, Cassie shook her head.
“No.” She said now walking out.
As Cassie walked out to her car she let her tears free fall and pulled out her phone.
Cassie:“I’m in.”
Dad: “I know. I’ll see you Monday.”

“Casey,” Chief Boden called to Becker on her face way out of the station that afternoon. His tone told her that he had business to discuss, and she guessed the rest. “My office.”
Becker cast her bag aside and followed the chief to his office.
“Chief,” she greeted, walking into the familiar room. Not long ago, she'd sat in one of the chairs opposite the chief and her brother and told her superior officer a story that transformed her life. It set in motion plans that not only changed the way Becker felt about being home but the way her brother saw her. Being a firefighter was all Becker had, dealing with a dirty cop had become another layer of the job.
The chief gave Becker a politely stiff nod in greeting and gestured to the chair in front of him. He folded his arms over his chest and sat on the edge of his desk. “Have a seat. Do you know anything about Lieutenant Casey making a stop at the CPD?”
The colour drained from Becker's face; she didn't want to believe what she was hearing, she wanted to believe Matt was smarter than that. He wasn't stupid enough to publicly challenge a senior detective. Certainly not Lieutenant Matthew Casey, a man who had an entire career ahead of him leading Ladder Truck 81. But her idiot big brother, the boy who used to pick fights with other children for bullying her on the playground when they were kids? Well, that one was easier to accept.
Becker sighed; if things weren't terrible before, they were about to become a whole lot worse now. She thought back to the note she'd found on her windshield, she still hadn't told anyone about it.
“This is the first I'm hearing about it, Chief.”
“Have you had any more run-ins with Detective Voight or his son lately?”
Becker shook her head, she thanked her lucky stars that the only person in the world she couldn't lie to wasn't in the room. “Not recently. But I don't doubt I'm on his list.”
The chief nodded. “First sign of trouble you come to me. Understood?”
“Understood,” Becker agreed.
“All right. Go on, get out of here. Remember, first sign of trouble.” Chief Boden stood from the corner of his desk and shook Becker's hand as she stood to exit his office.
Few things frightened Becker Casey, none of which had to do with her job. She was certain her recent jumpiness hadn't gone unnoticed by the members of 51, but no one had taken the time to ask about it. She'd caught Kelly staring at her a few times, though he quickly diverted his gaze. She chalked it up to the fact that she'd been gone for almost two months and he hadn't known where or why.
Something was off. A small voice in the back of her mind that sounded a lot like her brother, alerted the young firefighter to an uneasy presence. She could feel eyes on her, watching her every move. It felt like it had the night that started it all. . . the only difference now was that she wasn't alone. Becker knew that she could call any one of her family members at 51 and they would help her if she needed it.
She decided to keep walking, hoping that her feeling was just growing paranoia from the note left on her truck. That damn note, still finding ways to haunt her days later. But even she knew that sounded like a load of bullshit.
“You're good, you're safe, you're fearless,” she repeated the words over and over, a mantra to get her through the walk back to the firehouse.
She pulled her phone from her pocket to send a text to her brother but decided to call into the station instead. The line rang twice then someone picked up the other end.
“51,” the voice said.
“Herrmann, hey, it's Becker.” She looked around the street. “Is my brother around?”
“Nope, haven't seen him since this morning.”
“What about Severide? Is he around at all?”
“Nah, haven't seen him since you guys got back from that construction accident. Want me to let them know you called?”
“Uh, no. No, that's okay. Thanks, Herrmann.”
“Hey, Casey, if something's going on. . . If you need help with anything, I'm—”
Becker quickly cut him off. “No. Just wondering if they were around. I'll catch them later. Thanks, Herrmann.” She hung up before he could say anything else. The feeling of being followed hadn't let up and she still had three blocks to go. She finally sent a text to Matt.
Hey, big brother. Haven't seen much of you today, don't know if your shift is over yet. Call me later, we'll get drinks. My treat.
She sighed, put her hands in the pockets of her coat, and tried to calm her nerves. Everything went dark after that.
Becker awoke to chaos.
Bright lights burned her eyes, rhythmic beeps sounded in her ears, the scent of chemicals filled her nose. She had a splitting headache and every muscle in her body was on fire. There was a strange weight in her mouth, and she found she couldn't move her head. She squeezed her eyes shut, a soft whine, barely audible slipped past her parted lips.
“Hey, you're awake,” a soothing voice to her left remarked gently.
Awake?
Becker couldn't remember the last thing she was doing. She couldn't remember where she was headed or who she was with, her head was foggy and pounding to the beat of her pulse. She panicked, fighting against the thing in her mouth. She struggled to turn her head and get a good look at where she was. She could barely make out the sound of chair legs scraping against the tile floor ― where was she?
Kelly appeared in her line of sight, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, he'd been crying. He gently stroked her hair with his right hand.
“Hey,” he said, voice wavering, “you gave us quite a scare, you know that?” He smiled weakly.
Becker raised her left hand toward her face, she was determined to pull whatever was on it off. Kelly's hand settled in hers and he laced their fingers together, he gave her hand a soft squeeze, continuing to stroke her hairline with the pad of his thumb.
“I know you're scared, but I need you to leave the breathing tube in, okay?” He squeezed her hand again. “Relax, Bec. You're safe now, you're at Lakeshore. We're all here for you.”
Becker frowned. She could count on one hand the number of times Kelly called her by her first name, it was always Mini Casey. Things were bad if he was using her name and had been crying before she woke up.
She tried to speak around the breathing tube, growing frustrated with its presence. The beeping of the heart monitor increased in speed as her heart rate went up.
“Leave it alone, Casey,” Kelly scolded firmly. He was looking at her with sad, tear-filled eyes that only raised her sense of panic.
She watched from her bed as Kelly turned toward the door and stuck his head out of it.
“Someone page Hallie for me, please. And get word to Matthew Casey's room that his sister is awake. Now!” Kelly returned to Becker's side and placed his hand back in hers. “Hey, hey. I'm not goin' anywhere, I'm right here. Two in, two out.”
What felt like an eternity passed until Hallie breezed into the doorway. Matt followed closely behind his fiancée, as did Chief Boden. The two men stopped at the foot of Becker's bed.
She stared up at them with hazy, unseeing eyes. She had questions they had the answers to, but she couldn't ask them in her current state. Her helpless, pleading eyes met those of her brother's.
“Hey, there, Becky. Welcome back to the land of the living,” Matt whispered. He chuckled softly, hoping to lighten the mood but Becker didn't find his joke amusing.
She struggled past the tube, the burning sensation in her throat caused tears to sting her eyes. She pulled her gaze away from her brother and up to Hallie as the resident leaned over her, stethoscope in hand.
“Hey, Becker. Welcome back,” Hallie greeted with a smile. She pulled the collar of Becker's gown down and placed the stethoscope against her chest. “Breath sounds are still uneven; oxygen is still pretty low as well. Becker, we're going to leave the tube in until your oxygen levels even out, okay? We want to get them back up before we remove you from the ventilator.”
Hallie's voice was calming in a way Becker hadn't known she needed, too caught up in trying to figure out what the hell was going on. She remembered Matt standing at the foot of the bed, looking like he'd been in a fight. She looked up at Hallie and over to her brother.
The resident understood and moved back to let Matt take her place. “I'll let you all talk. Page me if she needs anything. I'll check on you later, Becker. Rest up.”
As soon as Hallie was out of the room, the chief closed the door behind her. He resumed his position at the end of Becker's bed, his expression one of concern.
“Casey, do you remember the last thing you were doing this afternoon?”
Becker tried to speak around the tube, clenching her fists in frustration upon realizing again that she couldn't. Her eyes shifted up to her brother's face.
“It's okay, Becky. Take your time.” Matt slid his right hand into hers, offering her a small bit of comfort.
Kelly sniffled, drawing her attention to him. “Squeeze my hand if you remember, squeeze Matt's if you don't.”
She looked at her brother and lightly squeezed his hand.
Matt spoke up again. “Do you remember calling the station on your way home?”
Becker thought for a moment, she did remember that, but she couldn't remember why she had. She blinked through her tears, squeezing Kelly's hand.
“Do you remember texting me about grabbing a drink after shift?”
They watched with pained relief as her left hand flexed around Kelly's once again. She wondered what time it was.
“You were three blocks away from the station. My neighbour, Mrs. Walker, found you while she was out walking Trixie and called 911.” Kelly's voice met her ears, he was calm but visibly shaken up.
“If you have any recollection of who might've done this, now would be the time to let us know.” Chief Boden stepped forward, handed Becker a small notepad and pen.
She looked between her brother and Kelly, both men nodded their agreement. Becker picked up the pen, wincing at the pain shooting up and down her side. She was certain there would be significant bruising, if not a few broken ribs.
Becker stared at the notepad in her left hand; she'd waited so long to tell Kelly about what had caused her leave of absence, that she wasn't sure she had the courage to do so. She noted the bruising on Matt's cheek and the way he held his side, and was sure that whatever happened to him, was connected to what happened to her and the note from Halloween.
When she was finished writing, she tilted the notepad toward her brother.
“She's positive it has to do with the note she found when she was leaving here after getting her stitches removed on Halloween night.”
“The one that was in your jacket pocket?” Kelly asked.
Becker gave him her best approximation of a scowl; he shouldn't know about the note.
“I wasn't snooping, it fell out of your pocket when you handed me your jacket. I thought you'd want the chance to tell me yourself.”
“What note?”
“It wasn't signed. Who was it from, Bec?”
Keeping secrets hadn't served Kelly or Becker well over the last few weeks. Just that morning shed lied to the chief about Voight harassing her simply because it hadn't been direct the way his treatment of Matt had. And now, it'd come back to bite her in the ass.
She put pen to paper once more and showed the notepad to Kelly, hoping this small display of truth would fortify the trust between them. She wasn't sure how much longer she could keep her walls from crumbling.
Kelly looked down at the notepad, then up at Becker's face. Did he have a right to be angry with her for keeping this from him? Becker wasn't sure, but at least he was by her side. His green eyes were filled with pain anyway. “She didn't see who placed it, and all it said was ‘Get your brother to drop the charges. Or this little game becomes a lot worse.’ She thought she had more time.”
Matt straightened up; anger flashed in his bright blue eyes. “It's one thing to go after me and Hallie, but my sister?”
Kelly held up his hand, stopping Matt's rant. “I don't understand what your thing with Voight and his son has to do with Becker. Why is he targeting her if she wasn't even here for two months? She doesn't even know the guy.”
Becker looked over at Matt. Her dark eyes were pleading with him to tell Kelly everything she hadn't, everything she needed to and couldn't. Hiding the truth from her partner, her best friend, was no longer an option when their lives could be in danger.
“Becky, are you sure?”
Kelly's eyes found Becker's as she stared up at him, only shifting down toward the bed at the firm pressure that returned to his hand. He looked up at Matt, the chief, and Becker. . . Being left in the dark was only going to cause him more pain. He swallowed past the lump in his throat. “She, uh. . .she's squeezing my hand again.”
Matt nodded. “Okay.” He took a deep breath. “Kelly, recently Becker told me that the accident Justin Voight was involved in isn't the first time we've run into problems with Voight. He's been covering things up since his son followed my sister home three months ago.”
“Three months ago? So this punk has been messing with you for three months and we're just now hearing about it?”
“I only found out a week ago myself, I left it up to Becker who she did or didn't tell. I haven't even been the best since finding out,” Matt said. He picked up the notepad after Becker was done with the lengthy explanation and read what she wrote. “She knew you would freak out and that's one of the reasons she didn't tell you. It's the same reason she didn't tell me. When I found out it changed how I looked at her at first. And the other reason is that she was ashamed and thought we would be ashamed of her, too.”
“Ashamed of you for what, Becker? Some punk ass kid harassing you isn't your fault.”
“Sev.”
The two men sat in the chairs next to Becker's bedside, Kelly on her left and Matt on her right. She'd closed her eyes so she wouldn't have to see the horror and anger cross Kelly's face when realization set in. She didn't want to have to admit that she had been too weak to fight off the advances of an inebriated 19-year-old.
“Becker. . .” Kelly didn't know what to say to comfort her, he didn't know if there was anything he could say.
Becker blinked her eyes open. She took the notepad from Matt one last time, then handed it to Kelly once she finished writing.
The Squad lieutenant looked at the notepad, then up at the chief, and finally across the bed to Matt. He swallowed down the rage bubbling up in his chest.
“What'd she say?” he asked, attempting to remain level-headed despite the hatred growing under his skin.
“Call Antonio Dawson.” Kelly looked down at his partner's face, reaching forward to wipe away a stray tear. “Are you sure?”
Becker squeezed his hand; tears fell.
