Scientists torturing backronyms/acronyms happens a lot, actually (see my tags for examples)
Backronyms
Physicists suck at naming things (I can say this because I'm a MechE and I have had to deal with so many physicists), but occasionally they have a stroke of brilliance. Like, a friend of mine worked on a dark matter detector called DarkSide. That's so goofy that it wraps back around to good.
Anyway, there's this superconducting fusion reactor in france called WEST. It's notable for having first-wall shielding tiles (the innermost surface of the vacuum chamber, directly facing the fusion plasma) entirely made of tungsten.
There are a lot of materials used for plasma-facing components – tungsten, molybdenum, graphite, beryllium, various composites and combinations of the above – but it's pretty rare for a reactor to go full tungsten. It can take extremely high temperatures, but it's brittle and expensive, and "high-Z" (high molecular weight) impurities in the plasma cause their own issues. So, the main purpose of WEST is to investigate the viability of an all-tungsten first wall and divertor.
To that end, they tortured an acronym until they got it to work:
Tungsten Environment in Steady-state Tokamak
Or "WEST"

Yesterday evening, I was able to enjoy watching a large thunderstorm approach where I live. The way the world changes as it prepares for a storm provides a fascinating and unique feeling that I tried to capture in today's piece. I chose harp, since each pluck is reminiscient of a single drop of rain, and the bass strings can resemble booming thunder.
Harmonically, it focuses on harmonizing semitones; while the notes of the half-step are dissonant with each other, they are both individually consonant with almost every other note available. Also notice how the piece begins with every string set sharp, then, along the circle of fifths, I lower each tone until the harp is set to all flats. This provides the literal "falling sensation", but also relaxes each string; when set sharp or natural, the string as made tight (like stopping a violin string), but when flat the string can finally vibrate along its full length, giving the tone a wider, fuller sound, that I wanted the piece to build towards.
Of every piece I have done so far for this project, this is the piece that I feel is farthest from being "complete". I find that the musical ideas I presented here would be better expressed through much slower overall development, allowing for the sense of anticipation to build and build. The piece really changes character after the first boom of thunder, and I feel that this change would be more effective if it happened much more gradually. Of course, the reason it is so condensed is simply the limitations of writing these studies daily, with the one-page stipulation I've been using. That all said, one of the main reasons I began this project was to find ideas that I want to expand into larger works, and this will certainly be one of them.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!

Chromatic Harmony

I was inspired by the composer of AAI, who mentioned that the BGM was piano-centric to reflect Miles' 'black and white' character image.
For some reason, when I paint him, he seems too colorful😅

“We should use the minor third, not the fifth. We’re going for something jazzy so get the classics out of your head,” Daeyoung said, pointing at the chord you had written out of habit. You sighed, already erasing some of the composition. Composing jazz melodies always had your brain spinning a bit. Daeyoung had a better grip on the theory of it.
“Let’s do an F minor 7 here since we had a theme of D in the previous two bars. We can resolve it with a G or C7 later on,” he suggested, picking up his pencil and scribbling in the chords over where you had erased the previous ones. With skilled hands he played the twelve bars you had written so far, rich chords and a dancing chromatic third pattern singing out between them. You had to admit, it sounded perfect.
“This jazz unit is gonna be the end of me. I’d give everything to go back to Baroque,” you slumped over the piano, forehead resting on the top of the fallboard.
“It’s the last one of the semester. It’s better than practicing your pieces for finals another fifty times. Surprised you haven’t killed one of our professors yet,” your boyfriend joked. He was surviving another year at music school a lot better than you. Maybe you should have taken your parents advice and majored in something safer. It was all to prove a point. To show them that you could be successful in a career in fine arts. You weren’t too sure yourself, though.
Daeyoung always believed in you. He saw where you shined musically while most teachers didn’t spare you or your playing an extra glance. Maybe it was just because he just paid more attention, or that he cared more. You knew he would do the same to any of your classmates. It wasn’t just because you were dating— he was just kind to everyone.
“I think I’m going to rip my hair out if I have to think of one more chord progression,” you mumbled, defeated. Daeyoung rubbed your back, coaxing you to lean against his shoulder instead of the piano.
“I’ll do the rest. It’s only 20 measures.”
You nodded, grateful that you didn’t have to look at the empty staff still to fill with notes. Your boyfriend grabbed the pencil again, drawing in a rhythm of triplets in the thirteenth bar. Closing your eyes, you listened to the sound of the pencil scribbling on paper and Daeyoung’s hands on the keys; the gentle melody slowly washing away the frustration that had been building up all day.

I think there should be a "classical music fandom" but like in a way that's structurally identical to tv show fandoms so people talk about their blorbos (favorite motifs) and make OCs (rewrite pieces using a different theme but the same harmonic development) and "ship" different "blorbos" by writing sonatas combining the two different motifs and like you'll see a bunch of fan-pieces incorporating a specific theme from some mostly-forgotten late-classical piece and it's like weird and chromatic and you're like "wow this really weird for that time that composer must have been doing some really experimental stuff" and then you go listen to the piece and it's like. a passing measure in one of the transitions

oo! your last ask was really interesting! do you have anything to say on the relation between the various Loop related tracks?
it’s very cool that you’re talking about your music in such a way, thank you for engaging with this community!
So Loop's theme is just kinda silly weird mysterious. There's a chromatic walkup at the beginning of the melody because weird and silly.
Loop's hangout is one of the few tracks written by Alice Liston, who is no longer with the studio, but she's an incredibly talented composer who took a lot of the fundamental aspects of the original song and turned it into something dreamy, which I emphasized with some unique instrumentation.
Spoilers ahead:
The Loop fight is yet another one of my MEGA BATTLE compositions where I go ham because it's a fight song and I have to do way too much.
We start with that chromatic walk up in our classic title theme synth and immediately launch into Sandra's intense drums backed with Spitfire Audio's Albion ONE strings to fill out some space.
There are a couple of wild synth solos here written again by Alice Liston, and the drums move into a standard time with a staggered syncopation before jumping back into double time on the riff. Toward the end we build into a kind of combination prog rock EDM drop, and then…
Lo-fi! We take everything down here to a more sonically simplified version using some synth guitar designed in MASSIVE, a couple of simple wave forms, and some bit-crushed drums. We also introduce a new simple counter-melody here with a fairly straightforward motif we repeat while the exact notes change depending on the chord. We're still riffing on Loop's theme at this point, but we're adding some more context.
(Side-note: If you're interested in emulating vintage consoles of a particular era, one of the most important things to look up is the system's sample rate and bit depth! I'm 37 so "vintage" in this case is like… Commodore 64, NES, SNES, PS1, Sega Genesis, Neo-Geo, etc. It's also important to look up for something like the N64 where a lot of the sound design came from, like a lot of DX7 presets.)
Now with a powerful fill from the live kit we come back to our normal instrumentation, restating our previous section. Toward the end of this section we slowly build in our strings ramping up to a half-time breakdown that will lead into a totally new part.
The strings build intensity while also taking the responsibility of playing our main Loop melody, and we throw in a Dormont-style counter-melody to add to a sense of nostalgia as we ramp up our heart-string tugging.
Next, we bring in lead guitar-style synth to double our Loop melody that's playing in the strings to add an extra helping of epicness because come on, an electric guitar playing over the soprano part of a string section is like pique epic/dramatic.
Meanwhile the drums are still going in half-time to give it a breakdown feel (especially leaning on that china cymbal to give it a classic death metal breakdown feel), but at this point we're starting to get more embellishments and double kicks to make use of the space left to build further intensity until we hit that 80s metal crash mute and pause for emphasis, and then tom roll into our next section.
With the break into a new section we're saying NO MORE! We're getting serious now! We have a lovely riff written by Sadie Greyduck, which has a really uncomfortable and tense progression built into it that's emphasized by the strings that have moved to the very high soprano range to keep tension.
Then on our next repeat we jump into yet another solo! This one was partially written by Alice Liston, but ultimately I ended up fitting it into context and completing it. One thing you'll notice here is that there are a lot of passing tones and chromatic walk-ups to emphasize the Loop-ness of the situation.
Now we're jumping into yet another me(n)tal breakdown! This is more riffing on the Loop melody, but then we hear that brass section jump in! We're moving forward and doing a little more light riffing while the rest of the band takes us home in a slightly stronger and more triumphant fashion.
Finally we pick up the pace and we're back to our old classic, the title theme, but it's add odds with the context it exists in and starts to move in a spacier direction, eventually morphing back into Loop's theme.
For the album version we put a cap on it with a piano restatement of the beginning of the song!
(Also I finally looked it up and the other piano I used besides Spitfire Labs "Soft Piano" is Native Instruments "The Gentleman".)
Honestly I love fight/boss themes so much and they're always so fun to work on because I can go ham and the people I work with can do some of their more extreme work, plus it's always an excuse for Sandra to go nuts on the drums.
Thank you so much for sending in your ask! We're always so happy to get these and to hear how much our work has affected so many people! 🐶💙

Laura Netzel
Tumblr media
Pianist and composer Laura Netzel was born in 1839 in Rantasalmi, Finland. Netzel made her debut as a pianist at 18 with the Swedish Court Ensemble. She made her debut as a composer at 35 at the Harominc Society's concerts in Stockholm. Using a pseudonym, Netzel published more than seventy works, including piano solos, piano trios, choral works, and almost forty songs. Her work was mostly in a romantic, chromatic style, with influences from contemporary French music. From 1892 to 1908, Netzel ran a series of low-cost concerts for working class people in Stockholm, and the shows had to repeatedly move to larger venues as the audiences grew. Netzel also raised large sums of money for charitable causes.
Laura Netzel died in 1927.

— Seconda Stravaganza. Giovanni de Macque (1548-1614) — Dormendo un giorno. Vincenzo Ruffo (1508-1587)
Giovanni de Macque (1548-1614) — Seconda Stravaganza [Ms. 1617, British Library, London]
The Seconda Stravaganza of Giovanni De Macque, a Flemish composer transplanted to Naples and another member of Gesualdo’s circle, is an impressionistic, chromatic and tonally unstable piece; it introduces the Baroque concept of ‘stravaganza’ which eventually led to Vivaldi’s collection of violin concertos bearing the same name.
Vincenzo Ruffo (1508-1587) — Dormendo un giorno [Capricci in musica a tre voci. (Milan: Francesco Moscheni, 1564)]
Vincenzo Ruffo’s dreamlike Dormendo un giorno brings us back to a metaphysical and abstract atmosphere. It comes from his collection of Capricci, one of the first works to use this musical term, and is built on the bass part of Philippe Verdelot’s madrigal of the same name. The capriccio was a loosely defined form in which the composer followed his own whim without generally observing strict rules.
_ La morte della ragione. (Viaggio Musicale Tra XV E XVII Secolo Da Desprez A Gesualdo Da Venosa) Il Giardino Armonico, Giovanni Antonini. (2018, Amadeus – AM 346-2)

My goal for today was to write a cadenza for harp. I explored many different ideas, so this piece is a little all over the place. I do like the textures I found, so I will certainly write another piece like this some day, using my favourite ideas from this piece.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!

p2: layman’s vibes analysis of the severance music
p1 here Your local unprofessional is back to ramble on… musical chromaticism! sounds complicated. it is not complicated. this will be chill. bear with me through 30 seconds worth of exposition before we mention Mark Scout.
major, minor, chromatic explained
western music is composed of notes! gee, who knew. these notes are certain distances away from each other. another given.
now for western music, we measure that distance in half steps and whole steps. a half step is-- you guessed it, half of a whole step! Another way of thinking of it is the white and black piano keys. White key to black key: half step
White key to White key (if there’s a black key in between them): Whole step
two white keys directly beside each other are a half step apart.
Tumblr media
Please forgive my chicken scrawl.
so we have that. now lets take like, 7 notes. and they are spaced with whole and half steps. we call that series of notes a scale. and for western music, you basically have two scales that define all music keys. (okay theres way more if youre gonna get into it but were not) .
Major Scale 😊🤩😍
Minor Scale 😭☹️😔
a major scale, or that cheery Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do! melody we all learn from Sound Of Music or someplace, is composed of a combination of whole and half steps. What makes it happy (major) is the order in which those whole steps are interrupted with half steps. In a major scale, the third and seventh distances, or intervals, are half steps.
ill represent Whole steps with W, and Half with H. so the major scale:
W+W+H+W+W+W+H
Visual+Audio Representation
or a virtual piano if you wanna try to diy?
that ^ composes the basis of nearly every happy tune you know. Party in the USA. Single Ladies. The Superman theme. yipee. now on the other hand, this guy:
W+H+W+W+H+W+W
Visual+Audio
is called a natural minor. the second and fifth intervals are half steps. This is Schindlers list. This is Bad Romance. Those are two very emotionally distant examples, but they are both minor.
NOW, why are the half steps never next to eachother, you may ask. like H+H? GREAT question. basically, when they made this it wasn’t super trendy yet. because that is chromaticism.
Tumblr media
Stay with me! now when everyone started to get bored with normal scales and got real avant garde, some dudes, i dont even know who, started including more scales in their music that followed this pattern:
HHHHHHH
Visual+Audio
and that is what you call a chromatic scale. How does that make you feel? Happy, sad? Neither. Weird, probably! chroma, like color, like gradient, covering all the shades. not major, not minor, something else entirely! its honestly even easier to understand than the major and minor. You guys can just go and press a row of keys on this piano in sequence and youve already done it.
hurray! youre caught up on your first music theory class. isnt that great?
great. can we talk about the theme song now?
yes im sorry. lets listen to apply our new scale knowledge. All we need is the first ten seconds. ignore the bass/left hand chords for now. After the introduction, pay attention to just that first phrase. And let’s watch the beautiful title sequence while we’re at it!
youtube
pay attention to the first two melody notes, b and b flat! how far are they from eachother? whole step, or half step? Take a guess by ear or by sight.
Tumblr media
if you guessed half step, damn right.
It’s there! Chromatic! We’ve proved it! let me now explain why that fucks up every basic way of categorizing the music into the usual categories of major and minor.
Major or minor melody?
musicians like tiktokers, enjoy sticking labels on every vibe and aesthetic within their grasp. if you put JUST those first 3 descending notes (B, B flat, G if you want to piano) , then tried to categorize it as a part of a major or minor scale?
you cant.
you wont get any part of W+W+H+W+W+W+H or W+H+W+W+H+W+W. you will get a worse math equation.
H+(W+H)
What is that 2nd interval….?! Why do we have Order Of Operations involved?!
the distance from the lowest note to the next is not a whole step or a half step. It’s a one and a half step. its a 1.5 step! Thats not what theyre called but thats what it is. now that does NOT work with the major or minor patterns i showed you earlier. you can look at it and instantly see. H H.
a half step beside a half step. HH. that is chromaticism.
chromaticism makes musical identity fuzzy. it makes everything a little funky, takes neat boxes out of the question. it can make listeners feel a little puzzled and a little uneasy, because we dont know where the music is going. we dont even know what it is. And if that isn’t how we all feel watching this insane show then I am harmony cobel. Here’s googles AI summary to prove my point because if you can’t get rid of that damn thing you might as well see if it supports your answer
Tumblr media
additionally, wind the video back and now listen to the 4 left hand chords. Focus on the last 3 chords. In those four chords, the highest notes form a descending chromatic scale, high to low. B flat, A, A flat! Half steps apart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used the theme to explain, but the chromaticism is all over all the music. If you hear 2 notes played together that make you cringe? They’re likely chromatic: a half step apart, aka a second interval. Heard it a few times through the show and actually grimaced. Visceral discomfort. Press any white key and its adjacent black key on this piano and that’s how it sounds
now chromaticism can be categorized. It has to be, and usually when you have more context from the chords it’s pretty easy to figure out. The funny thing is, the amount of harmonic context that the Severance chords give? like everything about this show, not very normal, while pretending to be! Cuckoo nuts. Hella vague. Makes you feel like an innie waking up in an ORTBO. Or like a mark remembering he did Helena Eagan. But chord ambiguity will take another essay to explain so that’s a topic for another time, when weve all processed the Finale episode that’s about to tear us apart. So that’s all for now, let us await our 72 minute weekly highlight together.
