One thing in Star Wars that doesn’t come up much, but I absolutely love it when it does: Starships being more than just a ship. Like how the Ghost or Mantis are home for their respective casts, or the traveling circus ship we see in clone wars. The amount of potential there is crazy. I mean I’ve done a traveling medical clinic and mercenary company, but you could do so much more. Mobile droid factory, asteroid miner, government in exile, interstellar orphanage, go wild with it.

Dev Diary 1 - What is Torchship?
Hello everyone! I’m Erika Chappell, @open-sketchbook on tumblr, and I’m the game designer for Torchship, the space exploration tabletop roleplaying game. I’ve been working on this game, in some form or another, since 2016, and it’s incredibly exciting to be approaching a form with it that we can show off to other people.
Showing off is the point of these dev diaries; we’ve done an enormous amount of work behind the scenes over the past year, and while not all of it is ready for primetime and not everything fits together properly yet, there’s a huge amount of game and world and I’m tired of waiting to show it off. These dev diaries will be a way of showing off what we’ve done, share what we’re working on, and get excited about what’s to come.
Tumblr media
What is Torchship?
As this is the first diary, I should probably talk about what the game actually is, right?
Torchship is a tabletop roleplaying game about exploring a vast and complex future galaxy of mysteries and danger. It is a traditional structured game with a GM and multiple players, who take the role of the foremost crew members of a rocket ship in uncharted space. It runs on a custom d6 system, designed around a set of solid core mechanics which expand into in-depth subsystems for whatever part of the game interests you.
It is, in many ways, a very retro sort of RPG. It’s deliberately aiming to be maximalist, not minimalist, with extensive and interlinking systems available for whatever possibilities your stories run into and mechanics everywhere you look to sink your teeth into. Each individual mechanic is simple and the game is designed so that you only deal with small subsets at a time in places where it’s appropriate, metering out the complexity similar to how the Routine in Flying Circus cut down on the number of moves in play at any one time.
You play as members of Star Patrol, a multifaceted agency of the Interstellar Union of Republics, or Star Union for short. The IUR is a very new and relatively small alliance thrust to the status of a superpower by the collapse of the local empire. It is ringed on all sides by potentially or actively hostile states, not to mention the looming threat of godlike powers and ancient civilizations that truly rule local space.
Star Patrol are equal parts explorers, diplomats, prospectors, spies, and watchmen, tasked with the impossible task of charting millions of unexplored or long-lost stars for resources, allies, and advantages as the borders close in and the power vacuum closes. Funding is tight and resources scarce; you’ll be the only ship for dozens of light years, but if you’re successful, if you can light the way, the future might be bright after all.
Tumblr media
FTL Drives & Radiators
While Torchship’s inspiration is obvious, it might be more accurate to say that it is informed by Star Trek. It is not an attempt to make A Trek Game that directly emulates the feel of an episode; it instead aims to explore, reimagine, critique, and deconstruct its inspiration while injecting new ideas from outside.
One of the main ways it differs is by lingering on logistical concerns which are usually handwaved away and emphasising that you are space explorers, people out in the vast expanse, clinging to fragile bubbles of oxygen and water. Our mission statement for tone is Star Trek with Radiators; shiny space ships with all the retro trappings combined with the enormous glowing heat management systems.
This is deeper than just an aesthetic. Torchship is not hard science fiction, but there is nothing stopping you from putting realistic reaction engines and impossible teleporters side by side, nor from treating that teleporter as a complex machine that still obeys some kind of laws.
Or, in other words, the ship can go faster than the speed of light, but it still needs to do something with the waste heat it generates.
This principle manifests in dangers: Decompression, high-g forces, and radiation are huge threats, heat builds up, vacuum sucks. Instead of the consoles exploding, projectiles zip through the hull and lasers chew through vital parts. But… it’s going to be okay, because you still have impossible energy shields and amazing medicine and tools to repair any damage.
It is also present in the politics and logistics focus of the game. Torchship is a game about scarcity; you have to carry all the resources you need with you, and there are no magic replicators. Somebody, somewhere, labours for everything you use. This system connects to the political aspect; all your choices will be reflected onto the Star Union as a whole, and will shape who they become over time.
Development
Right now, Torchship is in an alpha state. It is still actively being written and rewritten with an eye toward playtesting and public betas. We are filling out the website (which will act as a big setting encyclopedia) and assembling 3d assets for creating artwork.
Torchship is an independent production and it’s being developed by a very small team. Despite that, we’re going to make the best damn space game there ever was.

12. "Let's play cards, winner gets..."
In the less-than-glamorous bowels of the UNSC's latest "home away from home," a motley crew of Spartan super-soldiers hunched over a rickety table that had seen better days. The flickering overhead lights cast an almost comical glow on the proceedings, making the stack of MREs in the center of the table seem like a treasure trove worthy of a pirate king. This was no ordinary game night—it was poker night, and the prize? None other than Master Chief Petty Officer John-117's stash of rations.
John, the man, the myth, the legend, shuffled the deck with the kind of seriousness you'd expect from someone defusing a bomb, not playing cards. His stoic expression could have fooled anyone into thinking he was plotting the next big offensive against the Covenant. Sitting across from him, Fred-104, Blue Team's de facto leader when John wasn't around, eyed the deck with suspicion, probably wondering if those hands of steel could finesse a shuffle or just snap the cards in two.
To John's right, Vannak-134, the strong, silent type, cracked a rare smile, his eyes twinkling with the kind of light-heartedness you wouldn't expect from a guy who could bench press a Warthog. Beside him, Kai-125 was the picture of cheeky confidence, her smirk suggesting she had a few tricks up her sleeve—or maybe she was just happy to be there, hard to tell with Spartans.
Riz-028, rounding out Silver Team, was the embodiment of focus. If there were an Olympic medal for intense card-playing concentration, she'd have taken gold, no contest. Her eyes darted from player to player, as if trying to x-ray their cards—or their brains.
The game itself was a slow burn, each hand dealt with the kind of gravitas usually reserved for high-stakes diplomacy or interstellar negotiations. Bets were placed with a mix of Spartan rations and bravado, the currency of choice in these parts.
"Alright, fellas," John's voice cut through the tension like a knife through butter. "Last hand. Let's see if anyone can pry my precious rations from my cold, dead hands."
Kai snorted, throwing her cards down with a flourish. "John, you might be the Master Chief, but you're not the master of poker. Watch and learn."
Fred leaned back, stretching his arms as if preparing for physical combat rather than a card game. "You know, I've seen Grunts with better poker faces than some of you. Let's wrap this up before our esteemed leader here starves."
The final showdown was more akin to a circus act than a game of poker. Cards were slapped down with theatrical flair, accompanied by a running commentary of taunts and jibes. When the dust settled, it was John, with his unflappable demeanor and a hand that would make a Vegas shark weep, who came out on top.
Fred shook his head, chuckling as he collected the cards. "Well, folks, looks like John's rations live to see another day. I swear, you've got more luck than a leprechaun."
John cracked one of his rare, almost-there smiles, the corners of his mouth twitching upwards. "Thanks for the game, everyone. And don't worry, my rations are always up for grabs. Same time next week?"
The laughter that followed were the true prizes of the evening. In the world of Spartans, where life and death hung in the balance, these moments of absurdity were their own kind of victory, a reminder that beneath the augmentations, they were still human. Well, superhuman, but who's counting?
That's on me for putting a game of chance in John's lap. My bad, everybody.
This was a ton of fun. Nice to see the dorks getting to be such dorks. Great work!

TT: As I mentioned, Crockercorp's rebranding on 3-11, as it was often referred to in the news, totally changed everything. TT: It marked the beginning of a completely shameless downward spiral of western civilization, through a series of events that were probably hard to notice at the time, but quite glaring when evaluated historically.TT: Though the Baroness made very few substantive gestures of aggression, the global fear of her looming threat would trigger all the changes she needed.TT: Governments prepared for war, as if to defend against the invading alien armies she undoubtedly commanded.TT: But of course, she had no army. She was always the only of her kind.TT: Instead, the world powers were only setting about to build her armies for her.TT: The media deteriorated into this preposterous circus that was in all practical ways inseparable from the power base and government institutions.TT: Popular entertainers became dangerous demagogues, and their roles in the media blurred with those of executive authority.TT: And the most dangerous were the ones who fed into the fear and hysteria most effectively.TT: These tended to be plants. Unscrupulous shills paid by the Baroness to move her agenda forward. GT: Dang. GT: I would like to think i will not be suckered by their silvery tongues whenever they come along. TT: Well the thing is, most of them are already on the scene in your time. GT: Who! TT: Ever hear of Guy Fieri? GT: No? GT: I dont think so. TT: You're fortunate then. TT: He was an especially degenerate piece of filth.TT: He used his connections and guile to wriggle into the spotlight, and then on to other positions of power.TT: He somehow landed on the U.S. Supreme Court. Over the years, other justices started mysteriously disappearing without being replaced.TT: After helping rewrite the constitution to form an incomprehensible patchwork of fascism, theocratic mandates, recipes, and bad rap lyrics, he weaseled his way up the ranks to become the High Chaplain of Interstellar War.TT: I'm just gonna cut to the chase, cause really this ain't a big history lesson here.TT: He eventually came to be regarded as the third and final Antichrist.TT: No other human in history was responsible for more death and suffering. /homestuck/4864 posted 04/25/2012, 10:11 PM EDT

Sonic in the games has like only 3 emotions ever these days, in the comics he has more range. He got tortured for S I X M O N T H S and acted exactly the same. Tails cowered to Chaos Z E R O and was whiny too like in LW. Eggman isn't taken seriously and is portrayed as a circus clown, IDW has a better balance of humor and seriousness. Only Shadow is possibly worse than in the non Boom games. So you've got ONE out of the dozen+ characters that are better in the games.
That's odd, I remember Sonic having a large range of emotions - like him being surprised when Shadow saves him from the Phantom Fake, him beating Phantom Zavok to a bloody pulp at the end of the boss fight, and constantly dissing and mocking Infinite and calling him a 'Masked Clown', to the point of him actually saying about wanting to make it Infinite's epitaph quote. That's all not him having 'more than three emotions' in Forces.
Tails didn't just poof out of existence once the Chaos Zero scene ended though. Tails does not fight toe-to-toe as a character, he requires help from his machines or his friends to get the job done. The only time he's ever had a toe-to-toe fight is the Egg Walker. Chaos 4 he fought with Sonic and Knuckles, Egg Hornet was also him with Sonic, the character fights are clearly implied by the game to be embellishments of Tails' perception, as Sonic is the one to fight Gamma and Knuckles in their respective stories. Even games like Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow, and Sonic 06, Tails... Doesn't really accomplish much on his own without assistance.
Also, you're talking about Eggman, right? The guy who, in Forces, had an multitude of back up plans behind back up plans, had a contingency plan for when his Death Egg Prison got blown up, had only one thing in is entire operation fail because Infinite was drunk off of his newfound powers to even bother to check if all the Phantom Ruby prototypes were safely destroyed, and got rid of said dolt once his usefulness ran dry? You're talking about the Eggman whom had a backup Egg Carrier 2, in case Chaos betrayed him? You're talking about the Eggman that tricked Tails into telling him the Chaos Emerald Sonic had was fake, even though he had sneaking suspicion at the time? The who fought back against the Black Arms, and also tried to manipulate Shadow into becoming his pawn, and only acquiesced that he 'found Shadow' in ten minutes of the fight against Devil Doom? The Eggman who managed to trick enough people to him 'turning over a new leaf' enough for him to get permits of an Interstellar Amusement Park? The Eggman whom, to this day, still manages to not face jail time because nobody in this world are cops?
Please, tell me again when the IDW Sonic cast don't act like how you've described the Games Cast, because then I might start believing you.
