I've encountered an annoying problem that makes me appreciate Tolkein's whole "language must exist within a culture so lemme write a whole world for my conlang" thing.

I made up a conlang for a specific story a while ago, and I've kinda gradually added to it bit by bit over the years and, for the sake of having one more complete language rather than a bunch of random half-baked collection of words in various fake languages, decided I could just reuse this one. I'm rather proud of what a fucking mess the systematic conjugation is, and if I made a second conlang I might be tempted to do that Latin thing where all the nouns get their own genders or some such nonsense, just to distinguish the two. Also, it just seemed like a fun idea to me in the same way that, like, you sometimes see people reuse the same character designs across multiple comics as part of their "cast" that act out their stories.

Anywho, I've been trying to reorganize my conlang notes for a bit now. Streamlined spelling rules and whatnot, and now I'm shifting the exact file type its stored on so it'll be easier to toggle if it's sorted by English or Conlang alphabetically, and I came across the words for dragon and dragonfly.

In the original story I started this for, the group that speaks this language has a disdain towards dragons, so the word for dragon is a compound word that directly translates as fire worm. Dragonflies, on the other hand, are seen as signs of luck, so the word for dragonfly can also be used to mean luck in certain contexts. I distinctly remember being pleased with the fact that I'd framed bits of language around cultural attitudes, and I wouldn't want to replace those words within that story. But neither of those choices logically follow in any other story I've toyed with applying this language to, since the cultural context around them wasn't applied to any other world I've built.

For the time being, I've dealt with it by making a second, similar version of dragon for use in other stories, and added a note to dragonfly about how it only gets to carry dual meanings in the one story world. So I guess I'm now seeing a bit of dialect diversion. Which miffs me a little. Now I feel like I'll be under more pressure to alter additional words for a given story.

It almost makes me wanna make an entire second language.

No major story updates today. Just staying the course with some scene setting and layout.

I think I have an actual plan for the next three chapters, and even a rough idea of what to do with the chapter after that. This is pretty crazy stuff. Usually my "outline" is just a list of plot beats I want to hit throughout the story, and I just figure out mid-scene how to get from one to the next by trying to figure out what reasonable reactions the characters might have after Beat 1 that will end with them reaching Beat 2. And if that happens to involve an extra chapter or two in between, I do my best to fill 'em with set up for future beats or character dynamics.

I bought myself a bag of plantain chips at the end of October that I earn as a reward for hitting 25k. I don't know if I'll get it tomorrow or not, but surely the day after at the latest.

I appear to be in the control group for testing the new dashboard layout and hope all y'all in the trial group make it sufficiently clear to staff that the change is not great and should not be rolled out to the rest of us.

In the meantime, I recently discovered that, if you're on your blog and try to edit a post from there rather than your dash, the site now drops you off on your dash rather than taking you back to your blog page when you're done editing. Which is kinda annoying. Return me to where I was, please.

do you think sam was on claire's side when she wanted to risk her life being a werewolf because of him wishing dean hadn't saved him (at least not the way dean ended up saving him) in season 9? (i've been reading takes on the scene where dean says claire doesn't get a vote, likely out of fear of losing her, but other people say it's because he's controlling of his loved ones, and while i think dean is Wrong to say claire doesn't get a vote, i don't think he's being intentionally malicious when he says it, and i wished to hear your thoughts). sorry if this is a weird question.

I think this is a difference in parenting style.

Dean is more of a natural parent here, taking charge and laying down the law when Claire's safety is at stake. Sam, on the other hand, is oddly light with huge issues like the werewolf cure, but annoying pushy about smaller things, like pushing for Claire to "tell Mom now."

Dean is less rigid about Claire's chosen personal boundaries with Jody but much more direct when it comes to big safety concerns and suffering. This contrast really highlights how Sam’s style can be a bit funny—he doesn’t always seem like a parent but more like a mentor, focused on rules and guidance.

Meanwhile, Dean and Cas act instinctually with her, feeling around and finding their footing quickly, acting to lay down the law when Claire's safety is involved.

Sam, in comparison, sometimes comes off like a tattletale, overly concerned with the details rather than the immediate danger. I had a very long (I'm sorry it's so long!) thing about this here:

It's so funny because while Sam is willing to let Claire make life-or-death decisions about werewolf cure, he's still pushing on the "tell Mom now" front. And while Dean is a little rigidly protective over the "this cure will probably kill you and cause you unimaginable suffering front," he's less rigid on this interpersonal one:

This is one of the things I yell about for Sam, and why/how a season 16 could be so important to me re: Sam's parenting journey.

I favor Sam's core dilemma being safety vs. autonomy, and it's one of the reasons I want Dean II to be John Winchester-Sam-balls-to-the-wall-nutcase-hybrid to the power of 20,000 so Sam can get a taste of his own medicine.

EDIT: I will add that Dean has come a long way with his instinct towards parenting. With Sam, it was "then at least he dies human!" With Claire, many years later, his first thought is that he'd rather have her as a monster than potentially suffering/dying for a cure.

There was some rummaging that could be heard in one of the many rooms in the blacksite. An expendable sorted through the drawers as she had done numerous times before, however this time her motives were a bit different.

It had been slow in Sebastian's shop recently, and since she had taken up space there, she had decided to scrounge up some research for his sake.

Unfortunately, it seemed that almost every single room, drawer, locker, shelf, and desk had been looted. She let out an annoyed sigh.

She decided to take a break since she was getting tired after doing this for who knows how long. She leaned against a cold metal wall and slid down it to sit down.

After several minutes of silence outside of the room, 624 could hear what sounded like shouting. It was accompanied by two pairs of footsteps quickly approaching the room 624 was in, along with what sounded like a child's laughter.

The noises quickly got closer, until a little girl ran into the room, crouching behind one of the desks while holding a small object close to her. She didn't seem to have noticed 624, as her attention was focused on the door.

The footsteps outside continued for a couple seconds before they slowly moved away, causing the girl to smile, tuck the object in her pocket, and look around the room. She quickly noticed 624, and her smile immediately dropped, her expression now filled with distrust, annoyance, and a small amount of fear.

"Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?"
