Fanfiction and Assemblage

“A commercially published novel is multiply produced—editors, agents, designers, marketers, literary sources, and market demands, all have their parts to play—but it comes to readers as a discrete book‐shaped entity with a single authored name. It is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. Its multiple influences are not readily apparent on the face of it. By contrast, all the popular understandings of fanfiction I’ve referred to here rely heavily on multiple relations—text to source, text to legal right, writer to writer, writer to community, fanfiction to other fanfiction—and fanfic texts themselves often announce these relationships on their front pages. This relationality—these multiple sources, influences, and participants—is something we immediately understand as intrinsic to fanfiction rather than something we might gradually become convinced of by delving into French theory or studying the publishing process. The “we” of Western reading culture, however, do not primarily think of literature as an assemblage, and while we are likely well aware that books are things that must be assembled at some point and that websites must be coded for display on complex devices, this material assemblage is not what we have in mind when we think of “literary composition,” whether digitally or codexically disseminated. For most readers and writers, the work of literary composition is the work of the author, and this way of thinking about authors and their works is conditioned by Enlightenment notions of individuality, genius, aesthetic value, and art. Fanfiction both challenges and owes its existence to these same notions.”

sonic painting study/practice

i post at the worst times past midnight but here's a painting study practice thing i did of sonic, the funny tin man and the kinder egg guy to kick off my hyperfixation

originally i was going to have nothing in the background behind sonic but i thought it looked too lazy so i added two other iconic characters instead 🥚🤖

            "Ya look pretty cozy to me. All bundled up snug as a bug in a rug." Scout rolled his eyes with a huff.             "Yeah, well, I'm not. Easy for you to say anyway when you're next to the freaking boiler room."             "Well, ya know you're always welcome in here, Scout." Engineer patted the spot next to him. "Why don't you come take a seat and get warmed up? I think I've got a blanket down here somewhere."             Scout wordlessly stepped towards the bench and took the offered seat. Even wrapped in layers, Engineer could see the subtle shivers emanating from Scout's body. But as he stood to go find the blanket, he felt a pair of slender arms wrap around his waist, tugging him backwards in protest. A second chuckle rumbled in his chest as Scout pulled him closer, snuggling into his back.

It was hard to pick a pairing for this one (Day 2 - weather/cozy) since there are so many good options for this. But it was ultimately going to be Engineer with someone. What can I say? I think the guy gives really good hugs.

The Classics of Fan Studies: Karen Hellekson and Kristina Busse - Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet

Today, I’m going to talk about a book that I always recommend to people who want to discover fan studies: Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet which is a collection of essays around fandoms edited by Karen Hellekson and Kristina Busse. One of them about fanfiction as theatrical performance was even written by our very own Francesca Coppa! 

Each essay in this book can help us understand more about the inner workings of fan communities at a time when LiveJournal was at the height of its popularity and people gathered to talk about Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the early seasons of Supernatural. As someone who has always been interested in the reasons why fans turn to specific pairings, I particularly enjoy Elizabeth Woledge’s Intimatopia. It deals with the importance of homosocial relationships (social bonds between same-sex people) as a basis for slash stories. Using the example of Kirk/Spock, she explains that fans tend to focus on pairings that come from “a media source that already emphasizes homosocial bonds through the depiction of the loyalty between two men who live and work in a more or less homosocial community” (97).

If you’re interested in fan studies in general, I also recommend reading the introduction which gives a great overview of fandom at the time as well as the evolution of the discipline with a description of what came before and how the direction it was taking at the time. Busse and Hellekson also make some great points about the advantages of studying fandom when you are a fan yourself.

Greek heros as Dead Poet Society characters.

Neil- Achilles, destined for talent but fated to death from the very beginning. Would definitely go to the end of the world for something he loved (Todd or acting). His parents forced him to do whatever they want (Achilles hidden away from society to get him out of the war).

Todd-Orpheus. He is always looking back at Neil, to see if he is there. When he ran to the lake because that is where he and Neil read lines together just like Orpheus ran to the underworld to get his wife back. Todd thought that he could be with Neil once more here. He stood on the desk and that was when he finally realised he could never get back what he lost just like when Orpheus turned around.

Charlie- Heracules. This one is due to the fact he always had a view in life and used that view to overcome trials. He let Mr Keatings help him go through these trials, joining the dead poet society, the woman, the phone call and the fact he never ratted out the other poets. These were all his tests but unlike Heracules he was a loyal friend and would definitely never kill his wife and children.

Meeks- Telemachus. Okay so Meeks is very smart but waited for the perfect time to do things. Putting up the radio with Pitts. Standing on the desk. Ripping out the pages in the books. Telemachus has to wait for the perfect time to get the suitors, that is when his dad is back and Meeks waits for his friends to make it clear that he should get the job done.

Pitts-Daedalus. He made a radio with Meeks and had to hide his invention from his school. His invention worked and got his not out of a maze but out of having no music.

Cameron- Agamemnon. He yelled at Achilles because he didn’t get his way. Everything must go his own way. And he gets killed in the end and in the movie he gets punched in the face.

Knox- Odysseus. Knox’s journey to Chris was like Odysseus’ home to Ithaca. Something always gets in the way, more woman arrive and he has to work his way until he finally makes it to where he wants to be. Only Odysseus is smart and it didn’t take him lots of begging and stalking to get to his wife.

so funny to be in fandom spaces and study classics. like Homoerotic means both 'a friendship which COULD maybe POSSIBLY be INERPRETED as having romantic/sexual connotations, but they're JUST FRIENDS.'
