Today I'm here to rec a cute little fic from @42donotpanic! This one's a rarepair, folks, (written for the DDE Rarepair Bang, in fact!) so if you love Clint Barton or Matt Murdock, check it out to see if you like them even better together! It's got some great environmental detail as it explores Matt's experiences in libraries as a space, and Matt is a bit of a flirt (as usual). I was really fascinated to see Clint as a civilian here, I think it totally changes the dynamic without the Avengers and their associated world-ending dangers, haha. It was a cozy, sweet story with a lot of introspection and some good ol fashioned boy-kissing. Plus, it has some lovely art by Iithril at the end!

I often think about how there might come a time, in the distant future, when the movie industry decides to remake the Marvel movies.

One day there might be a press release or a movie trailer announcing the new project, detailing how the special effects will be a thousand times more incredible than the originals or how the storylines have been modernized with a brand new all star cast.

When that day comes I’ll think fondly of the teenager who skipped class and took a bus to stand in line an hour early for Infinity War, the one who saw every movie the night of it’s release and who waited so impatiently for a year for Endgame to come out.

In the eyes of that teenager, no remake will ever live up to the originals of their lifetime, but I hope that they light the soul of another so that the footprints I left all those years before can be occupied once again

It’s a old, short fic about Clint grieving Natasha. A small bit of introspection because I couldn’t get the image of Clint confronting Nebula out of my head. I wrote it after watching Endgame with my cousin, the first draft of this fic was titled “because fuck you i have feelings too” — is there anything else Avengers related I could write about Post-Endgame? Threads that would be interesting to explore?

three months. but it felt more than that. 

( abuse, torture, injuries tw ) 

CLINT BARTON, no matter what adversaries he faced, always opted to do the right thing. he had been in the raft before, he had experienced the torture and isolation before. it was INHUMANE. it was SADISTIC. and despite how bruce banner now existed in his hulked out form, nearly invulnerable — he was still HUMAN. and no man deserved to be thunderbolt ross’ captive play toy, not for one second. no one deserved to be dehumanized and be treated like a walking nuclear bomb. 

and clint barton would never turn his back on those who need him. 

but doing the right thing had never been foolproof. and even heroes could fail. they took the risk to save a friend and now, they were being punished for it. he didn’t regret the attempt, no,  that didn’t mean clint felt any less ... helpless. memories of his previous arrest  — their treatment of wanda mirrored their treatment of scout  — and clint couldn’t help but feel guilt that he let that happen. he wondered if their friends would come for them, weather all odds and free them. thunderbolt ross was a maligned man and hid behind the laws he had a hand on creating. their friends would be blind not to see that,  they would be fools if they let themselves be controlled by such man. they’ll come for us, he thought.  

they never did. but maybe, it was for the best. especially when they could just end up in cells, too. 

clint wished he could hear steve. bruce. scout. even the goddamn punisher. but every noise not from his own mind were obscured like an apartment neighbor’s television from three doors away. without his hearing aid,  he could only hear them clearly when they screamed on top of their lungs. when they were hurt. the days blurred together, no sunlight, and the only way to keep track of time was when he looked across his cell and theorized how long they had been there based on steve roger’s facial hair. 

the best days were when men came to wake him up whenever he’d pass out against his will. they’d tie him up. cover his face with cloth and pour water on his face. they’d take off his clothes, trace his scars with shallow cuts so they’d be healed for the next time. he was a punching bag. but at least, the pain kept him up at night. he didn’t want to sleep. 

he dreamed of his father --- a chair thrown in his direction, barry’s face bruised and swollen for trying to protect him, and he could hear their mother’s cry.  he dreamed of swordsman, abandoning him to die. he dreamed of pietro, bullet holes pierced the boy’s skin --- he was just a boy on the path to change after his childhood shaped him to seek revenge. he dreamed of grills, just a regular guy killed by mob bosses to harass him when he got in their way. he dreamed of lucky. wanda. sam. natasha. bobbi. coulson. fury.  kate. 

he’d scream and cry in his sleep, but no one could wake him up. no one by his side to wake him up. no sounds to shake him back to wakefulness.                                                                                                            

three months. but it felt worse than that.

Clint falls halfway in love and then back out with pretty much every person who treats him even halfway decently or makes any overture of friendship. He’s done this with pretty much every Avenger by now, fallen not quite in love but past the simplicity of a crush with Steve’s stubbornness, Tony’s veiled kindness and humor, Thor’s booming laugh, Sam’s warmth, Bruce’s quiet and comforting presence. So when he fell half in love with Bucky the first time he saw him shoot on the range (he has a competence kink a mile wide and he’s not ashamed of it), he didn’t think twice about it. Without exception, the feelings always faded into the warmth of friendship and found-family, and it never mattered that for a few weeks Clint had to control himself so he didn’t follow the object of his affection around with hearts in his eyes.

Tonight, for the first time ever, I get to see the very first canonically queer couple I've ever shipped get married and have a hard won Happily Ever After.

It's always been a pipedream, though, to have two characters I love love each other.

Then one night this past March I decided to finally give Roswell, New Mexico a chance while bored and lonely at home, scrolling thru Netflix. I went into it not knowing there was a canon gay character.

The very first time I saw Michael and Alex on screen together, I remember thinking, "Yup. That's it. That's my new ship. I ship them. Don't care."

The next time they were on screen together, I actually sat up on the couch because, omg, their dialog was making it sound like they really could be gay and had been a couple at some point.

And then, this scene happened...

And I am not kidding when I say I fell off my couch flailing and screaming and fighting back tears because OMG THEY ARE!! THEY'RE GAY!! I DON'T HAVE TO PRETEND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, CUZ THEY ACTUALLY DO!!! And this was the pilot episode!

From that moment on I was hooked. I was so happy to finally have a canon queer couple!! And weirdly enough, they led me to some introspection of my own and made me realize that I myself am queer and that if I were ever able to/brave enough to transition that I would be gay.

I haven't been able to come out to many people except for on here because I know so many people in my life would react badly if I did (i.e. my family and even though I am 36, I do still currently live with them and I'd rather not deal with the fallout while under their roof). But slowly I have been trying to change things -- switching to Old Spice deodorant and bodywash, wearing guys shorts and flannels and pants, giving ambivalent answers to anything referring to me as female. Whatever I can do to make myself feel more like me without drawing too much attention to myself.

But tonight I get to watch my Emotional Support Queers get married. And for me that's like a confirmation that love wins. That even if your blood family hates you for who and what you are (Alex's dad forver hating him and thinking less of him for being gay, despite everything Alex did to try and prove himself worthy of love and respect from his family), it's okay to be who you are. There are people who will and do love you and support you no matter what. I will forever be thankful to these two characters and to the beautiful, wonderful, talented men who were brave enough to portray them so convincingly that for the first time ever I even found myself shipping the actors themselves. And I will also forever be grateful to Tyler Blackburn especially...who didn't finally find the courage to come out as bi until after he got the role as Alex...who was scared of coming out even into his 30s because he was afraid of how his family/father would react. Maybe some day I'll be as brave as him and be able to come out officially.

Thank you Michael Guerin and Alex Manes for being so stupidly in love with each other even while trying to move on and be with other people, you were always going to end up with each other because you're cosmic soulmates. I'm going to miss seeing your stupid in love faces on my screen and watching you two grow as characters, a couple and eventually a family.

And finally, thank you Michael Vlamis and Tyler Blackburn, for everything you two have done in support of these characters and community. Your dedication to your characters cannot be beat and we love you both for it.
