16. "it could be worse."
Obi-Wan squeezes his eyes shut against the dazzling firefight playing out in the air before him. From his vantage point crouched low behind a tall stack of crates they'd planned to use to smuggle the Republic sympathizers to safety, he can see the precise moment that a rebel fighter is hit in the chest with Imperial blasterfire. The woman goes down immediately, weapon dropping to the ground next to her body.
"The tunnels," Kara murmurs from his shoulder, and Obi-Wan nods, turning from the dead rebel to look around at the rest of them, the ones who are not fighters, mostly citizens, some engineers, politicians who have never picked up a blaster in their lives. These are the factions of rebels that Rebel General Obi-Wan Kenobi is supposed to protect.
"The tunnels," he agrees, and opens his mouth to give Kara, his second in command further instruction, when a chill descends in the air around them. No, not the air.
In the Force.
Obi-Wan's mouth runs dry and he inhales sharply as the newcomer's Force presence expands outward, a powerful torrent of pure dark rage.
"Vader," he says, and Kara's eyes widen before she lets out a curse.
It is not common for the Emperor to let his most ferocious guard dog off his leash for something as inconsequential as their small rebellion. After all, sending his apprentice to quash the uprising runs the risk of legitimizing it. Obi-Wan can count on one hand the amount of times he has heard of Vader pursuing rebel forces in the ten years since the fall of the Republic.
And each time, there have been no survivors.
Obi-Wan's eyes fall away from Kara's face, push past the surrounding faces--all scared, all dirty and bloodless with their fear--back to the corner of the small room. Luke looks back at him, eyebrows furrowed and small screwdriver clutched tightly in one hand. The other hand is wrapped around his sister's wrist, though they don't know that.
There's so much they don't know, so much Obi-Wan had never wanted to tell them.
"It could be worse," Obi-Wan murmurs, running a hand over the edges of his beard. There's a shout from behind him, the familiar cadence of a clone trooper that used to mean ally and now means enemy.
Kara scoffs, rubbing her hands over her thighs in a nervous gesture. "How?" she asks. "If you're right, if that's Vader--we're dead. How could it be worse?"
"Ah," Obi-Wan says, almost apologetically. "Well, you could be facing him without me."
"What?" Kara's eyes narrow, mind running fast, but they don't have that sort of time. Luke and Leia must survive. He'd promised Bail that he would find Leia; that she'd be returned safe to her parents.
And Luke--he'd had him for ten years, raised him as his own despite Yoda's wishes and his own agreement. He'd been unable to give him to his uncle and aunt in the end--just like he'd been unable to kill Anakin on Mustafar, just like he'd been unable to resist joining the Rebellion when Bail had approached him with the first seeds of it.
Time after time, he'd made the weak choice--the selfish one. And finally, it has come time to pay his dues.
"I need you to take Luke and Leia to Alderaan," he tells Kara. "Bail will understand what has happened. He will know what to do."
Luke was raised in the rebellion. It was no place for a child, but he knew no other way to live. He'd acclimatize to life in the palace. He'd be alright. They'd have to pretend he was a servant, or a distant cousin. They'd have to change his name. In a few years, when he's old enough, they will tell him the truth. Leia too.
"He will not want to go," Obi-Wan says, turning his head and lowering his voice to speak directly to Kara. Both the twins' senses are incredibly heightened by the Force. Best to not risk it. "Tell him I will join you momentarily. Tell him that until you are airborne if you must."
Kara's eyes are wet, but they do not have time for silly arguments. "General, you have no chance against Vader."
There's a louder, closer spray of blaster fire. That Force signature, so darling once, crushes down around them. They have no time, but: "Have a little faith, Commander," he says, dredging up a smile and clapping Cody on the shoulder the way he's done a hundred times--a thousand. "Go."
This time he is obeyed, though he does not stay and watch. He does not stay to hear Luke call after him. It disgusts him, the magnitude of his own selfishness. The truth of how much this will hurt Luke. He should never have joined the Rebellion; he should never have brought Anakin's son so close to this war.
He flicks his saber on and pours himself into battle.
It will take the contingent of Rebels at least thirty minutes to make it through the tunnels and aboard the small ships they've docked on the other side of the mountain range. He only needs to give them that time. He only needs to give them enough time to escape.
Escape Vader.
Vader, who hardly ever flies out to crush rebel forces.
But it was only a few days ago that Obi-Wan was caught on security holo in the lower levels of the city on the planet's oceanside.
Of course Vader who come.
Obi-Wan is banking on being the reason for Vader's presence.
Perhaps this too is a sort of selfishness.
It is not enough to have stolen Anakin's son and raised him as his own; it is not enough to have fought Darth Vader in his nascency, knocked him unconscious and then been unable to strike the killing blow.
Perhaps Obi-Wan is as he was ten years ago, just desperate to see that beloved face once again. Desperate to still mean something to him, even though they are changed men now. A monster and a Jedi. Or what's left of a Jedi.
He deflects a blastershot to a rebel soldier's head and pushes him towards the entrance to the tunnels. Anyone he can save. Anything to make this sacrifice worth it.
He cuts through a stormtrooper's arm and then into the muscle of his armored thigh. There is little material that can protect against a lightsaber. Only beskar.
Beskar and--
A line of red meets and clashes against Obi-Wan's blue saber, holding it at bay.
Beskar and other lightsabers.
Vader's expressionless mask meets Obi-Wan's eyes at the same time that his Force signature slams into him like a full frontal speeder wreck.
"Anakin," Obi-Wan whispers. He doesn't mean to--it's just--it's impossible to ignore, impossible still to understand even after all these years. Anakin. This is Anakin, this is his Anakin, dressed in the costume of Darth Vader, swinging a red lightsaber and serving the master of the Dark side of the Force.
"Master," Vader purrs out through his vocodor.
It is immediately clear how much more powerful Anakin has grown since Mustafar. He is thirty-two now, has had ten years to train and learn.
Obi-Wan is forty-eight and only ever reaches for the Force during training sessions with Luke. He is out of practice and weakened by his grief.
He never stood a chance. But he had not come here to stand.
There is very little faith left in his soul, but he throws what he has into the Force for the first time in years.
Then he flicks off his saber and falls to his knees, casting the weapon out of his hand.
This weapon is your life, he'd told Anakin on the eve of his first trip to Illum. He remembers the words, the way they'd felt wrong in his mouth, but the way he'd said them anyway because he needed Anakin to believe them. He'd needed Anakin to never lose his weapon, to never give it away because it was the best chance of his survival and somewhere between Qui-Gon's death and that first trip to Illum, his survival had become tangled up with Obi-Wan's.
"Will you kill an unarmed man, Anakin?" Obi-Wan asks, tilting his chin up. His mouth is dry. He hopes Luke understands with time. "I did not."
It would have been so easy. It would have been the hardest thing Obi-Wan had ever done. That entire day--the memories of it are hazy, each second lasting an hour as new horrors and betrayals and deaths had run him through, but he remembers every moment of that battle on Mustafar. Trying to reason with Anakin before having no choice but to attack.
Fighting on the lava rivers, through the old mining architecture, fighting for his life but tearing himself apart at the same moment as he fought against his life, against his purpose, his padawan--
It had felt like a miracle, like a blessing from the Force when he'd struck Anakin's temple with the hilt of his saber and the boy's head had hit the corner of the transporter pad they'd been fighting on. He'd collapsed, unconscious.
And Obi-Wan--Obi-Wan could not bring himself to kill an unarmed man. He had too much honor for that.
No--he just could not bring himself to kill Anakin Skywalker. He was too selfish for that.
He'd carried his body to the shore instead. Then he'd gathered Anakin's wife into his arms, though all he'd wanted to do was hold Anakin instead, and he'd left him there.
And now, ten years later, here he is. Unarmed and on his knees before the man he couldn't kill.
Vader stares at him, light saber held at his side and still lit.
"No," Vader finally intones, reaching up and unclipping his helmet. Obi-Wan starts automatically, pushing himself back from the sight though stormtroopers latch onto his arms to restrain him. He hadn't--he can't see Anakin's face. He is not strong enough to survive it. Vader always wears the mask, the armor, he has not seen Anakin's face in ten years, he hadn't thought he'd see it now, and he can't---
That beloved golden hair is shorn short, curls perhaps long gone. The lines on Anakin's face are deep, making him appear so much older than thirty-two. His eyes are flint hard and a burning yellow and he is so beautiful and familiar and dear, despite it--despite everything.
And--on his temple, on the left, the black ink of a tattoo. A jagged circle with harsh lines running across his forehead and down the side of his cheek.
Obi-Wan knows it intimately. He'd struck him there ten years ago.
And Anakin had gotten the wound immortalized.
"No, Master," Vader says in Anakin's voice, made deeper and more mature over the last ten years. His gloved fingers ghost over Obi-Wan's cheek before gripping his chin. "But I will not leave him as you did."
Obi-Wan flinches. The stormtroopers' grips tighten on his arms.
Anakin turns away from him. "Strip him of any weapons and bring him to my ship," he barks out. "We depart immediately."
"But sir, the rebels--"
"They are of no import," Anakin says. "Not when I have Kenobi."
Obi-Wan closes his eyes and sends a prayer to the Force in the moment before a suppression collar is fastened around his neck.
He is incredibly selfish, really. When Anakin says I have Kenobi, a part of Obi-Wan thinks immediately: you never lost him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been writing this fic for almost 4 years now. I am in the process of revamping the old chapters. I currently have only finished 2 chapters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summery:
Prime was a lonely harbinger. He wanted someone to 'love' but never had the time to seek out or maintain a relationship. So he did what he does best: make a clone do it for him. After many unsuccessful 'relationships' the clone was left to scavenge around for any possible suitors. This eventually led to Y/N, who lived in a small village in Teyvat. Being forced to live with him was a pain. She had to learn how to deal with his antics. But how will things end for the two?

Chronological Star Wars Watch Order
Alright, about once a year I decide to watch all of Star Wars in chronological order (I will update this list as more SW content comes out). This is actually a bit more complex than it sounds, because a lot of stuff is out of order when you just watch the shows straight through.
The Clone Wars TV show is actually very out of order, so I've put all the episodes in chronological order to the best of my ability (if I've made any mistakes let me know and I'll correct them!) Also, I've worked in Tales of the Jedi episodes, Tales of the Empire episodes, and Forces of Destiny episodes, in their approximately correct places. On Wookieepedia, there are some episodes where the date is not specified, so I did my best. Anyway, if you also would like to embark on watching all Star Wars in chronological order, this is how you do it! All of these can be found on Disney+
~ 200 BBY
Young Jedi Adventures
~ 100 BBY
The Acolyte
~ 68 - 58 BBY
Tales of the Jedi: S1 E2: Justice
~ 52 BBY
Tales of the Underworld: S1 E4: The Good Life*
*Wookieepedia does not set a date for this episode. I assume Cad Bane is around 10 years old, which would place this episode around this year.
~ 50 - 48 BBY
Tales of the Jedi: S1 E3: Choices
~ 37 BBY
Tales of the Underworld: S1 E5: A Good Turn*
*Wookieepedia does not set a date for this episode, nor does it mention how old Cad Bane is. I make the assumption he is 25, which would put this episode around this date.
~ 36 - 35 BBY
Tales of the Jedi: S1 E1: Life and Death
32 BBY
Tales of the Underworld: S1 E6: One Good Deed*
STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE
Tales of the Jedi: S1 E4: The Sith Lord
*This episode takes place 5 years after TOTU: S1 E5. Assuming my calculations are correct for TOTU: S1 E5, then this episode would happen in this year.
~ 32 - 28 BBY
Forces of Destiny: S2 E10: Monster Misunderstanding
22 BBY
STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES
The Clone Wars: S2 E 16: Cat and Mouse

Forces of Destiny: S2: E2: Unexpected Company

* You could argue that the best time to watch this episode is near the final episode of the Clone Wars right after Order 66, but I personally prefer to watch this episode earlier on, as a sort of foreshadowing.

*vibrating with the force of my own pedantry* every now and then i see a post that claims tim tried to clone bart at the same time he tried to clone kon, but technically that is only confirmed true in the titans of tomorrow timeline and not in the main timeline, where we see tim in his cloning basement by tt03 #34 (cassie finds him there in #37). by contrast, bart's funeral only happens around issue #50, which is the start of the "titans of tomorrow today" arc in which gun batman tim says he successfully cloned both kon and bart back to life in his timeline. there is no evidence that main timeline tim tried to clone bart back to life in part because he'd already gotten caught trying to clone kon a hundred times before bart was even dead.

Fun Star Wars fact: the Jedi knew of Order 66 the entire time, and were OK with it. It was part of a series of protocols collectively known as Contingency Orders for the Grand Army of the Republic, to be invoked in case a certain situation happened. Known orders are:
Number unknown: Base Delta Zero (an orbital bombardment so complete that many felt the Death Star was more merciful) in case certain key planets turned traitors.
Order 4: deals with the transfer of authority in case the Supreme Chancellor is incapacitated.
Order 5: same as above, but the Chancellor has been declared unfit to perform his duties.
Order 32 (non canon): break dance with the droid army.
Order 37: a certain individual has to be captured at all costs, including the mass arrest of a civilian population and the threatened execution of the hostages. It's not a bluff, there's also a procedure on how to dispose the bodies.
Order 66: issued only by the Chancellor, your Jedi have turned traitor and you must kill them before they kill you (the use of lethal force only is easily justified because it's almost impossible to capture and contain a Jedi).
Order 65: issued by either the Senate or the Security Council by declaring the Supreme Chancellor unfit to perform their duties, the troops have to arrest them or kill them trying. Order 5 follows automatically.
I bet Palpatine had a blast knowing both that Order 66 was enforced by a chip and that Order 65 easily masked it.
Also, in Canon there was the funniest instance of any Contingency Order being activated during the Imperial Subjugation of Mon Cala: when psychotic Jedi Padawan Ferren Barr was confronted by Inquisitors supported by Purge Troopers, all clones, he pointed out the Purge Troopers were clones, that the Inquisitors were Jedi that pledged themselves to the Empire to survive, and then, with a shit-eating grin, he used the Mind Trick to issue ORDER 66. An Inquisitor got killed, and another lost her leg while Barr ran away laughing his ass off (Vader later killed him, but I think he too laughed when he found out).
I assume they thought that Order 66 was more "A singular Jedi has gone Darkside so lethal force is authorized" instead of straight up genocide?

OC Overview - Izvoshra
The Izvoshra were Grievous' eight elite Kaleesh warriors, his top lieutenants during the Huk War, and Khans of his Kolkpravis armies. In both Legends and Mouse Canon. All of them - except for the only one of them named and characterized, Bentilais san Sk'ar, who plays a major role in the Empire of the Hand -- died in the same shuttle crash that disfigured Grievous and led to him becoming the cyborg we all know and love.
Here's my takes on two of them. While pre-Clone Wars isn't usually the timeframe I deal with, considering the impact they have on Kaleesh history, and several characters in particular, I wanted to show them off here.
Balati yui Serket - Medic and Wife of Grievous
Name origins:  Balati is taken from Bēlet-balāṭi- one of the titles of Gula, the Sumerian goddess of medicine, and Serket, the Egyptian scorpion goddess who protects against poisons.
A lithe, bronze-scaled Kaleesh from the Kunbal Jungle, the medic of the Izvoshra was recruited to the Kolkpravis in 39 BBY.  Her clan's "inheritance" from the Bitthaevrian conflict was been a (solar powered) field datapad, originally belonging to a Jedi healer. It contained data on botany and chemistry, and Balati used it to compare to Kalee's native plant species and devise new healing slaves, potions, etc.  She also took note of what plants have natural insecticides, theorizing that if it works on little bugs, it might work on the big ones too.
She tended to have a very practical attitude, not much in the way of bedside manner, and a tendency to tell her patients off for “stupid” injuries, not caring for rank or role in such situations.  In matters of medicine and healing, she ruled with an iron claw.  Despite her brash attitude (or more likely, because of it), Balati was good friends with Ronderu lij Kummar and Bentilais san Sk’ar, probably because of how much time she spends patching the two "melee" fighters' wounds, compared to "ranged DPS" Qymaen jai Sheelal.  Her friendship with Sk’ar soon developed into a crush on the strike force master, though she was uncharacteristically shy about telling him.  It was no secret to the other female members of the Izvoshra, blademaster Ronderu and huntress/scout Ahoshu kek De'vana, both of whom would tell Balati to stop being stupid and just jump the violet-scaled warrior already.
When Ronderu died in battle in 37 BBY, Balati was almost as upset as Qymaen, and the two took comfort in each other, which resulted in Balati becoming gravid.  She became Grievous' first wife after Ronderu, laying two eggs -- her sons {who need names - they later marry another of my OCs, Ve'tani, Sk'ar's niece and future Khagan of the Kaleesh).  Balati tried to push aside her feelings for Sk'ar, thinking Grievous needed her more – for the good of not just her new lover and Khagan, but all of Kalee, or so she told herself.  Truthfully, she still loved Sk’ar, but knew both males were not the type to “share”.  She did love Grievous in her own way, understanding far more than his other wives that she will always be second to Ronderu’s memory, and not resenting him for it, but trying to give him at least a little relief to his grief.  Perhaps he understood, if only subconsciously, as he was also second in her heart.
She and Grievous together invited sisters (Wives 2 and 3 – need names) to join their family, after rescuing the two from a village that had been almost completely destroyed by the Huk, except for a traditional village creche (a practice long-abandoned my most Kaleesh during the Huk War, given the insectoids' disgusting, quite literal taste for Kaleesh eggs). The sisters had been on hatchling-minding duty when the attack struck and fought tooth and claw for their charges, managing to save them and kill a pile of Huk, despite being untrained civilians. Polyamory is customary for Kaleesh, especially among those serving in the Kolkpravis -- to add to the marriage at least one non-combatant so that their hatchlings would be cared for in the event of their deaths, and the sisters proved to be perfect additions.
For a time, things seem to be going well – the Huk have been pushed off Kalee entirely, and between the four of them, they had four hatchlings to keep them busy.  But Grievous knew that it was only a matter of time before the Huk returned, so he lead the Kolkpravis off-world, driving the Huk off of Abbaji Minor and Oben, and taking the fight to Torvarskl.
In a panic as the Kaleesh start eyeing (planet) Huk itself, the Yam'rii cried to the Trade Federation, who use their connections in the corrupt Senate to manipulate the Republic into sending in the Jedi.  The Kaleesh fought back valiantly for a few weeks, suffering terrible losses in the Kolkpravis , until Balati lost a leg when a Jedi attacks her, despite her being a medic, trying to help another warrior.  Grievous, horrified at the thought of watching another lover die in front of him, surrendered, in order to spare hers and the other Izvoshra's lives.  With her injury, Balati was no longer able to assist on the front lines, but at least she could still be a medic, even if restricted to using crutches to get around with her stump of a leg.
Grievous didn't outright say anything, but Balati knew he blamed her for the war ending in such an anti-climatic way, and they argued, a lot.  Their marriage was not exactly a happy one from that point on, as Grievous was in a mood after the war ended for no longer having a "job", while Balati's skills as a medic were still in-demand, made worse when Grievous took wives 4-10 in quick succession, without consulting the existing ones like he was supposed to, mostly for political reasons, but also to try, not too subtly, to "kriff" his grief away.  They tended to bicker and fight more than anything else, which more often than not dissolved into angry sex (though no more eggs – a medic knows how to prevent such things when not wanted).
In 28 BBY, the worst year of the post-ceasefire famine, the Intergalactic Banking Clan made its offer to Grievous -- work as their enforcer, and they will buy out Kalee's "debt", which will allow traders to come back to the system, alleviating the famine, and stop both the Huk raids, and the Republic's "inspections". Suspicious, but seeing no other choice, Grievous agreed, but asked for a "signing bonus" first, for the IGBC to give Balati an artificial leg, to replace the one the Jedi took. The IGBC agreed, and brought both Balati and Grievous to Muunilinst for the surgery (really to test how well Kaleesh will respond to cybernetics).  The new leg, and weeks together during transit and Balati’s recovery, went a long way towards fixing Grievous' and Balati's strained relationship, and she left Muunilinist with both her cybernetic leg, and once again gravid. Grievous stayed behind, and began his work for the IGBC.
During Grievous’ four years of work for the IGBC, Balati at first had regular contact with her husband, but it started to become more and more rare as the Banking Clan slowly restricted his access to home, until he unexpectedly returned to Kalee – breaking his contract early with the Banking Clan when he heard about the Huk’s desecration of the Oben burial grounds – clearly breaking their terms of the ceasefire in a way that even the corrupt Republic couldn’t dispute.  Seizing the opportunity to finish what they started, Balati fully supported her husband when he rallied the other Izvoshra for a strike mission to Oben.
Balati was pulled from the wreckage of the Martyr by her old crush, Bentilais san Sk’ar, but her cybernetic leg had been torn from her body during the crash, ripping open her stump in the process.  She died of blood loss in Sk’ar’s arms, while whispering Qymaen’s name, hoping that in death, he had finally found peace.
Ahoshu kek De'vana -- the Huntress
Named for Ahoshu, an Akan (African) goddess of hunting who kills poachers, and Devana, the Slavic name for Diana/Artemis
The huntress and scout of the Izvoshra, from the mountain/boreal forest region west of Kaleea, who joined Qymaen and Ronderu around the same time as Sk'ar. She was knowledgeable about animals, their behaviour and habitats, geography, and acted as the Izvoshra's advance scout, reporting back to Qymaen Huk locations, types and numbers, helping him to plan his strategies. She playfully made fun of Sk'ar at first for being a "city boy" (since he's from Kaleea itself), and had a huge amount of respect for Ronderu, admiring her battle mask and her skill with her lig swords. Her preferred weapon was a bow, as she liked long-ranged weapons but considered rifles, like those used by her Khagan, to be too noisy. For close range combat she used a shoni spear, which doubled as a hiking stick.  She could often be found after a battle picking arrows out of dead Huk.  A western Kaleesh, De’vana, like fellow Westerner Sk’ar, had violet scales, though she often painted her exposed scales with green warpaint (which might have been partially made from Huk ichor), acting as camouflage in the forests she stalked.
After Ronderu's death, she became frustrated at fellow Izvoshra Balati yui Serket, who she knew loved Sk'ar, yet married Grievous, thinking he "needed" her more, and called Balati out on her bullshit.
After the ceasefire, De’vana starts to realise just how damaged the Huk occupation had left Kalee’s environment.  Farmland had been burned, air and water polluted, and wild prey animal stocks depleted.  For a civilisation like the Kaleesh, where hunting and gathering still played a huge role in their food production, this was a major problem.  She proactively started replanting the razed forests, and protecting animals from the increasingly desperate population, acting as a hunt guide to minimize further damage, while still ensuring her people were fed.
In 30 BBY, two year after the ceasefire and the subsequent famine, the Huk, no longer content to just sit back and watch the Kaleesh suffer, begin their slavery raids again (calling it "reparation payments" to get around the Republic’s bureaucracy), only this time, the Kaleesh could not fight back (or at least they were not supposed to -- many did anyway, though they couldn't in the organized way they did before).  Huk raiders destroyed De’vana’s reforestation tree farms, and killed whole herds of animals just to leave them to rot and deprive the starving Kaleesh of another food source.
De’vana went to Sk'ar for help (since Grievous was being watched).  The two Izvoshra gathered a small guerilla strike force, the kind Sk’ar specialised in, and start to fight back, successfully destroying several Huk raiding parties, only for Grievous to be forced by a Jedi "inspector" (at lightsaber-point) to stop them. It doesn't come to violence, but Grievous was disgusted at himself for even the thought of having to raise a weapon to his Izvoshra. The incident would become known as the "Izvoshra Rebellion", even though only two out of the eight were involved.
De'vana was grateful for Sk'ar's assistance when no one else would, or could help her, and the two of them became mates. Though they never formally married, nor had any eggs, they were devoted to each other, for as long as De’vana lived.
She died in 24 BBY, along with the rest of the Izvoshra in the Crash of the Martyr, excepting Grievous and Sk'ar.  Badly burnt in the explosion of the shuttle, she was dead before the wreckage hit the water of the Jenuwaa Sea.
De'vana's death affected Sk'ar more than the warrior would ever openly admit, as he did not want to fall into the same trap of grief as had consumed Qymaen. He never took another serious Kaleesh mate. Decades later, while serving in the Empire of the Hand, he became rather notorious for his sexual appetite for alien reptilians, especially Trandoshans and Barabels, seeing them as casual fun, without the ... complexity that a relationship with another Kaleesh would entail. He told himself that, even as he kept going back to a certain Trandoshan over and over ...

I completed reading Catalyst literally just a few hours ago and wanted to share some further observations regarding Orson Krennic. (Discussion about his blaster is attached in the end.) While Krennic may not have excelled in combat skills, his role as a uniformed officer rather than a civilian was justified given the context of his work.
The book illustrates that Krennic had experience with missions akin to spec ops ("specially designated, organized, selected, trained, and equipped forces using unconventional techniques and modes of employment" as defined by NATO). His tendency to circumvent the chain of command aligns with the stereotypical portrayals of intelligence officers in popular culture (I'd blame James Bond for that). This behavior contributed to the tension between Krennic and Tarkin, not due to Tarkin's disdain for engineers (he was an engineer himself to some extent considering his contributions to ship designing) but rather because Krennic's actions often disrupted military operations, a domain in which Tarkin was particularly adept (i.e. the natural habitat of a Prussian officer).
Krennic wore an ISB uniform also for good reason. Although he was not a field agent, he appeared to be familiar in the areas of espionage and cybersecurity (Holonet security? Does it exist?).
Krennic was born in 51 BBY, and the Clone Wars commenced in 22 BBY when he was 29. It is important to note that there was a lengthy period of escalating tensions leading up to the Battle of Geonosis, indicating that considerations for security strategies likely began long before the Republic's formal militarization. Consequently, standard security protocols could have been established, with Krennic receiving appropriate training upon joining the Republic Corps of Engineers, which operated under the Judicial Forces—the closest entity to a military organization at that time.

So much effort has been put in to making it on this year’s Tumblr review. I want to thank and congratulate the Star Wars fandom, who has worked so hard year after year for this. This community is so strong and so much bigger than ourselves, it’s a wonder to be apart of it. Let’s keep working hard and keep working together so that we’ll do even better next year! See you all then!

when the skies catch fire │ch. 37
first chapter (x); previous chapter (x)
Satine offers Obi-Wan her arm as they walk toward the ag fields. He’s carrying a picnic supper in the pack strapped to his back, his other hand gripping his cane. The rainy season is drawing to a close, but the paths to the fields are still sloppy and saturated from the monsoons, and he’s grateful for Satine’s steady presence beside him.
He leads her to a smaller, more isolated field. As Satine helps remove the pack, she says, “This plot is new - it looks freshly tilled. Yewan’s doing?”
Obi-Wan nods as he removes a blanket from the pack and sets it down over the driest patch of grass he can find adjacent to the field. “Bo-Katan actually brought back some bulbs from her latest trip to Mandalore,” he says. “My father planted them a couple days ago.”
Satine helps Obi-Wan sit upon the blanket as she asks, “What kind of bulbs?”
He looks up at her, leaning against the large boulder behind him. “Lilies.”
Satine is still, except for the errant strand of her hair that twists in the light breeze. “Lilies?” she whispers.
Obi-Wan nods.
Satine straightens and walks to the edge of the field, where the tilled soil meets the wild grasses. She kneels, skirt fanning out around her, and looks out over the small plot, hidden to the rest of the planet by boulders and tall grasses, and Obi-Wan watches as she extends a shaking hand to rest atop the soil.
Her other hand wipes at her eyes.
She stands and makes her way back to Obi-Wan, sitting beside him. “You asked him to grow lilies? For me?”
He takes her hand, brushing off some of the dirt that stubbornly clings to her skin. “Before you worry that this field could have been used for growing crops, I asked my father to make sure everything we’d need to survive the year would be planted first. This plot was left over.”
“I love you,” Satine says in Mando’a, her voice rough.
Obi-Wan repeats the words back to her in her native tongue, and Satine wipes her eyes again. As they begin to unload the pack, she pulls out a bottle of wine and stares at him.
“How on earth did you manage to get your hands on this?”
He chuckles. “I asked for some favors to help plan this date.”
“No kidding,” says Satine, and she pops the cork off of the bottle and brings it to her lips. After taking a sip, she looks at the bottle, seemingly transfixed. “I haven’t had wine since…stars, since before I became pregnant with Léa. Before we left Coruscant. Actually, it would have been well before you rescued me on Mandalore.”
She hands him the bottle, and he takes one swig, and then another. Satine unpacks the rest of the picnic supper, and he watches her decide to stop fighting her tears as she discovers the various Mandalorian foods he’d asked Bo to smuggle for her.
“Obi,” she says weakly.
Obi-Wan laughs more deeply. “I actually may have sold my soul to Bo-Katan to help plan this date,” he admits, and Satine joins in his laughter.
As she begins to eat, Satine says, “I’ve never been on a date before.”
“Me neither,” says Obi-Wan. “What’s your verdict so far?”
She gives him a look. “I simply cannot understand how it is possible to fall out of love. I think that if people do, then they must not have fallen in love with the right person to begin with.”
He grins at her. “I take that to mean the date’s succeeding, then.”
Satine laughs again. Yes,” she agrees, taking the bottle of wine back as he offers it to her, then taking another sip. “It is. As you knew it would, you hopeless romantic.”
Obi-Wan takes a bite of Mandalorian fruit. After he swallows, he says, “Speaking of romance, can I ask you to fill me in on whatever’s going on between Padmé and Sabé? I heard that Sabé arrived while I was rendezvousing with Clone Force 99.”
Satine smiles coyly at him. “Noticed that, did you? Your mind does seem to be healing up quite well, it seems.”
“Yes,” says Obi-Wan. “Here and there I’ve been able to focus on things other than my immediate survival. The moments are short, but they are there. It’s progress.” He clears his throat. “But you didn’t answer the question.”
Satine tries to hold in her laughter but fails. “You did not hear this from me,” she warns him.
“Of course not,” Obi-Wan confirms.
“But Sabé has long been in love with Padmé. Being able to go out on her own for the past year or so - I think that really helped Sabé. Have you seen her since you arrived back?” When he shakes his head, she continues. “She’s no longer a mirror image of Padmé. I think she’d lost who she was when she had to be Padmé’s shadow. And now she’s had time to find that person - and to let that person come through. Her hair is much darker, and her makeup is different. Her clothes are less - well, they’re not the clothes that Padmé would pick out. They’re clothes that Sabé would wear.”
Obi-Wan hands her a bite of fruit, and she takes it and plops it into her mouth.
“Padmé is still learning who Sabé really is, but I think she’s falling for her.”
Obi-Wan feels his heart lift a little at this, as though a weight has disappeared. “I’m happy for her.”
Satine gives him a look. “Tell her,” she says quietly. “I think she’s conflicted about moving on from Anakin,” she admits. “He was your brother, and you loved him. I think she’s also worried about how you will respond to her relationship with Sabé.”
“I’ll speak with her,” Obi-Wan assures Satine. “She deserves every happiness. I’m only sorry that Anakin couldn’t give that to her.”
Satine brushes her hand against his knee. “You so rarely say his name these days.”
Obi-Wan grabs another bite of fruit. “I miss him,” he admits. “It was easier, in a way, thinking Ahsoka and I had killed him.” He laughs bitterly. “Imagine how bad reality must be for that sentence to be true.”
Satine reaches over to brush a strand of hair away from his eyes. “You’re worried that you’ll have to face him again.”
He shakes his head. “Strangely, no,” he says. “There’s nothing to be gained by me seeking him out. I cannot hold my own against him in a fight, not when my mind and body are in their current condition. And as much as I want to heal - and I will keep working on it - I think I’ve begun to accept I won’t be who I was before. I might not be able to connect to the Force again. I have new limits, and I need to honor those.” Obi-Wan takes a breath. “Something that I’m strangely confident in is that he won’t be able to find me, not if I don’t want him to. I don’t have a Force signature any longer.” He smiles at Satine. “Silver linings, I guess?”
Satine shifts. “That’s actually something I wanted to talk to you about,” she admits. “You managed to eliminate your Force signature. And I know I haven’t talked to you in detail about how we got you off Mandalore,” she adds, “but me hiding our Force signatures played a big role.”
Obi-Wan’s brow furrows. “You’re wondering if there’s a way we can harness that ability,” he realizes. “And use it to protect the younglings. Or teach them how to protect themselves.”
Satine nods. “I know Léa’s only a few months old,” she admits. “But it’s obvious what she’s inherited.”
Obi-Wan hums in agreement, and then he stills. Satine watches him, curious, as his eyes close in thought.
“Every so often,” he admits, “I keep thinking that I’m getting glimpses of light, of the Force.” He opens his eyes. “But every time I try to harness that light, all I find is darkness.”
“Maybe the Force is trying to speak to you,” Satine hedges. “You just have to figure out the right way to listen.”
Obi-Wan takes a deep breath, and then another.
“I wish Master Qui-Gon were here,” he says. “I wish I could ask him for guidance.”
“Ask him anyway,” says Satine. “It’s common in Mandalorian culture to speak to our ancestors. We believe they can hear us. It may take us a while to learn how to hear what their responses are, but they always respond. Maybe not in the ways we expect, but they do respond.”
Obi-Wan nods. “I’ll try.”
They sit in silence for a while, passing the bottle of wine between them and making their way through the picnic supper. Eventually, Obi-Wan corks the bottle and sets it to the side, and he grabs Satine’s hand.
He clears his throat. “There’s something else I want to try,” he says, his voice low, and there is no mistaking his meaning.
“You’re sure?” Satine asks, and he nods.
She shifts, turning to face him, throwing one leg gently over his hips to straddle him. His back still rests against the boulder, and he’s grateful - the sudden heat is nearly overwhelming, and he’s not sure he’d be able to keep himself upright on his own.
His hands navigate under her skirt to find her hips as Satine leans forward to brush her lips against his. As they kiss, she rocks her hips into his, still gentle, but this time he feels the friction, and he moans.
He feels her smile.
Obi-Wan is not sure how much time goes by, but he’s vaguely aware of the way the sun begins to sink. They ignore this, focusing only on each other, on hands and hips and lips and groans and sweet pressure. Eventually, Obi-Wan pushes Satine’s microgarment aside, finding her ready. He grabs her hand and moves it to his belt. Without a word, she loosens the belt and unzips his trousers, releasing him.
He holds her eyes as he holds her hips, and she slowly sinks down.
He hisses, the pleasure so intense it drowns out any pain, and Satine waits for them both to adjust before she begins to move.
He doesn’t last long, but he can’t find it in himself to care because the look on her face as he tumbles over the edge is the reason he’s still alive. She kisses him as he falls and returns to her, his chest heaving, and his head rests back against the rock behind them. She shifts to move away, but his hands tighten on her hips, keeping her against him, and one of his hands moves to her center.
By now he knows her secrets, and he brings her near completion with a few sure strokes.
Then, he whispers, “Satine Kryze Kenobi,” pressing against her with greater force on the last word, and he feels her begin to flutter around him.
She whines and breaks, and it’s mesmerizing and intoxicating.
“I love you,” he says in Mando’a, and she collapses into his arms.

Original SW Characters
Below is a little about my main Star Wars OCs and their tags!
Tumblr media
Avani of Cathar

Padawan of Master Chyaro Xalendren, Avani is deeply spiritual, compassionate, and perceptive. She possesses a strong connection to the Force, guiding her actions and interactions with others. Avani's compassionate nature is evident in her willingness to aid and support those in need. She demonstrates a sense of wisdom, resilience, and a relentless commitment to the ideals of balance and harmony within the Force.
Avani served in the Clone Wars alongside her sister Jedi General Kalon, as they led the 107th “Storm’s Edge” Battalion. Knighted during the war, Avani was permitted to participate in the Jedi Temple Guard Trials, her life long dream. Her trials lasted a week, and when she emerged, the temple was in flames…
Following the fall of the Republic, and serving the Rebellions for years, Avani found herself questioning the established norms of the Jedi Order, but still finding a need for an alternative approach to understanding and utilizing the Force. She spent many years traveling the galaxy, observing the impact of the Jedi Order on the galaxy, studying ancient force related civilizations, and the wars that left scars on the galaxy and her friends. Avani established the Guild of Force Users on the planet of Avalon, and dedicated herself to teaching the ways of the force to everyone.
Tumblr media
Aro Rua Ris
A chronically ill, Ryloth-born Twi’lek and Jedi Knight.

Aro was Knighted in the early months of the Clone Wars when he was 20 years old. He was given command of the 482nd Battalion where he met Clone Commander Nite. Despite Aro’s commitment to the war effort and the Jedi Order, he found himself caught in Nite’s orbit and the two of them began to form a bond that lasted the duration of the Clone Wars and beyond.
Aro is a fun loving and sarcastic, yet deeply caring person that struggles with both familial and romantic attachment. Although he had been warned against those types of relationships, Aro proved time and time again to be made stronger and more confident by those around him. He is very humble, often attributing his accomplishments to the support of those closest to him.

Tumblr media
Golden Guard Raze, CT-21-0019
A clone trooper serving with the Jedi Temple Guards.
Pronouns: he/him Decanted: ?? Era: Clone Wars
During the Clone Wars, Jedi Knights aided in the war efforts through supporting the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) through the Orders partnership with the Senate. Jedi Knights, often acting a Generals or leadership roles, accompanied Troopers into battle and lead operations. However, this meant the Jedi were limited in their abilities to oversee certain operations by the powers of Senate. The Jedi Temple Guards were crucial in the protection of Jedi temples across the galaxy and investigating force-related matters. However, since the Temple Guards solely operated under the jurisdiction of the Jedi Order, not the Senate, they were often unable to complete investigations, especially in matters involving the war or Separatists.
So, the Jedi Head of Security, Din Drallig, made a special request to the Jedi Council and Senate to have a trooper placed with the Temple Guards. This trooper would allow the Temple Guards to operate in war related matters. The trooper, ultimately selected by Commander Fox himself, was Coruscant Guard Special Ops Raze.
Raze, later nicknamed the Golden Guard for his gold detailed armor, accompanied the Temple Guards in investigations, battles, and galactic conflicts. While Raze may don the golden symbols of the Temple Guards, he himself was not a Jedi, nor force sensitive, and such, was not permitted in restricted zones of the Jedi Temple. Raze further is not privy to the secrets of the Temple Guards.

Hi! So I read your fic that focused on preening from the POV of Sanderson, and I was curious about the thing mentioned there about pixies going off to start their own companies when they grow up and have their own kids - I haven’t read everything, granted, but I don’t think I saw anything about that in your pixie worldbuilding and it sounds interesting, so I’d love if you could elaborate! Also, what do you think Pixie world would look like after a generation or two of this?
Thanks for your interest! (Heads up for minor #ridspoilers related to Origin of the Pixies, 130 Reasons Why I'm Fairy Trash, and Devil's Backbone)
Useful Knowledge
- 130 Prompt #37 - "Grooming" - One-shot about Sanderson (who has separation anxiety) anxiously waiting for H.P. to call him in for their evening grooming / preening ritual - Gyne & drone mindset info - If you don't know what gynes are, my replies won't make much sense. - List of Gen 2 Pixies - I namedrop pixies below. Not required, but it may be useful to have their numbers and vague details - Vice President Longwood's bio & main blog tag - Not required to understand this post, but there are some interesting old posts like "How do other pixies view the Longwood vs Sanderson rivalry?" & "What is Longwood's leadership style?" - It's also helpful to know what Wolbachia pipientis is, but the only thing you really need to know is that Pixies reproduce asexually when they come of age, whether they want to or not.
Background
"I was curious about the thing mentioned there about pixies going off to start their own companies when they grow up and have their own kids [...] so I’d love if you could elaborate!"
Aside from Sanderson giving sneak peeks of what he knows of H.P.'s plans in "Grooming" (and occasional other glimpses into his mind), we actually don't get to this part of the lore until Arc 4 of 130 Reasons Why I'm Fairy Trash.
For reference, I'm looking at the 130 summaries page and the next 'fic I post will kick off Arc 3, so it'll be a while.
Where we are in modern times (i.e. Timmy's time period), H.P. is down to his last offspring before his Wolbachia-forced fertility fades out- that's why Finley and Southmark - his final two children - are born tomtes: i.e., Fae without magic. Like a printer, he ran out of ink.
Tumblr media
Art from the Eclipse House roommates post - Sammy, Poof, Foop, Finley
Coincidentally, Sanderson's Wolbachia-forced fertility kicks on right around the time, as he had come into adulthood and his body finished setting up everything it needed to inside him.
Those who've been around a while probably know exactly who Sanderson's first clone offspring is... Who's that pixie?
Art from the 2019 music meme post
Tumblr media
It's... Cavatina Sanderson!
He's our cover image character for the Gray Train story arc and made his first in-story appearance as a teen (at Goldie's coronation) in "All I Ever Wanted." He is hands-down my favorite FOP OC, whom I've had since 2016 but have said little about since we've not reached his arc, and I love him very much.
Let's talk about companies, logos, some things we can expect from Vice President Longwood and Chief Pixie Smith, and a little about Cavatina... without getting TOO spoilery, of course.
Companies and Business
I can't say much, but I can confirm Sanderson opens a music store after becoming a dad and Cavatina often hangs out with him there.
The music store means a lot to Sanderson as it's the only place that's truly his (seeing as he shares an apartment with Hawkins, Longwood, and Wilcox for most of his life).
The funny thing about Cavatina is that he also likes tagging around after H.P., so you can imagine what that looks like. Duckling instinct strikes again...
Company Logos
A group of pixies can be called a company- not every pixie needs to run a business, but they're identified by special marks that organize them in family groups... Well, companies in a culture that doesn't like acknowledging family connections.
In other words, pixies have tattoos on their wrists that identify them despite being otherwise identical. These are Sanderson's:
Tumblr media
From this post
These marks are called logos and are tattooed on the undersides of Sanderson’s wrists- He's Pixie 002 in H.P.’s company (left wrist) and Pixie 001 of his own company (right wrist).
Sanderson’s offspring have his logo tattooed on the undersides of their left wrists; they do not have H.P.’s logo at all. When they're old enough for their own company, they'll add their logo to their right wrist and their offspring will have that same logo on left wrist, so on and so forth.
While forcibly tattooing little kids may sound cruel... There is a good reason for it. DNA tests are absolutely useless in Pixie World because pixies are genetically identical. Every pixie is, technically, the child of Ambrosine and Solara- H.P.'s parents (which is why all pixies are tied to the same yoo-doo doll). Their pheromones vary slightly, but brand marks are the only reliable way to identify who a pixie is.
Worldbuilding detail- Fae heal quickly, but washing injuries (like tattoo pinpricks) in rosewater will prevent them from healing. Sanderson vaguely alludes to this in "Grooming."
H.P. had 507 (surviving) offspring, and he began reproducing when he was 491,536 years old. He was the first pixie infected with Wolbachia. H.P. wasn't born with Wolbachia- he was only infected late in life (human equivalent of 43). His offspring are born every time he would be coming into heat if non-infected, so his offspring are 500 years apart (give or take a year, with rare exceptions).
But Gen 2 (H.P.'s offspring) were born with Wolbachia, so they start reproducing shortly after adulthood (human equivalent of 22 or 23, give or take for the individual).
And there are a LOT of pixies coming into age around that time. Which is a huge population concern.
Near the end of my "7 Billion Years in 15,000 Words" post, I mentioned that after Foop makes the connection between royal jelly and gynes, that news gets out. Fairy parents experiment with feeding jelly to their kids, leading to a boom of gynes in the cloudlands (Playing into that culture of gynes being viewed "more attractive" and "smarter" and "more desirable kids" than drones... Obviously all social stereotypes, but that's the unfortunate way of the world). That has a lot of problems in its own- Most notably, the fact that dominance instincts set gynes up to fight to the death and now there are a lot of them in Fairy World. -> Foop actually... did not want that news to go public. For all his faults, he's very thoughtful and meticulous and he wanted to think over his discovery before people knew about it. It's devastating to him and he carries the emotional burden of his research for a long time. Specifically, I said in that post that there aren't enough fairy drones to go around since many drakes developed into gynes, so a lot of them would probably seek the pixies, thus luring them out of Pixie World and integrating them more into Fairy World I still think that's the most likely fate. There are simply too many pixies for Pixie World to thrive with an exponentially increasing population in a very small space.
Where Are We Going?
"Also, what do you think Pixie world would look like after a generation or two of this?"
I really like the Pixie expansion plot I have going on. H.P. is a gyne, and as his few gyne offspring grow older, the smart move is to separate them so they won't kill each other (or him). The vibe here is "princess" bees going off to be queens of their own colony, which is fairly accurate to a real bee or wasp hive, which I like.
Longwood Mayfleet was H.P.'s first gyne offspring and is due to take over Pixies Inc. after H.P. (and even become Head Pixie II someday).
That's all well and good, but that still leaves us with a handful of other gynes who need to go somewhere. Most famously, we have Darius Smith- The next oldest gyne after Longwood.
Who is Smith?
Smith is always butting heads with H.P., to the point that he's not even allowed inside Pixies Inc. most of the time. He oversees the warehouses and cloudships.
I also have a pheromone post scheduled for Sunday on the sideblog that discusses Smith's unique pheromones. Check that out for bonus info.
Smith's a really interesting character to me. He wasn't old enough to fight in the War of the Angels, so he's actually in charge of Pixie World during that whole arc (and comes into his adult wings during that time, his biology kicking in early since he was forced to take the reins young. It's a wonder he didn't start reproducing as soon as he became the dominant one...
Although he gives control back to H.P. (reluctantly) when he returns from war, this brief stint at running Pixie World really gets to Smith and his instincts... which is why he has a whole takeover plot later on where he chases H.P. out and takes control. Here's an upcoming scene I think is funny (and tells you everything you need to know about the H.P.-Smith dynamic):
While I lingered on the fringes of Pixie society, Smith struggled beneath a mountain of papers and politics. The Anti-Coppertalon dynasty fell six days after Commelina’s birth, and First General Anti-Cosmo rose to take the High Count seat. Good on him. Smith had a hundred questions, and Emery relayed messages between us as a neutral party. I responded to each one in the same flat way: “You’re in charge. Figure it out. Maintain the professional brand image I spent your life building up. Don’t be dumb.” But by Lugh’s spear, were they on a massive time crunch to plow through all that paperwork. According to Da Rules, midnight wasn’t to fall on the Lia Fáil while a major position of power lay vacant. Emery said Smith pulled every pixie together in the food court and had a job that normally would have taken a week (minus procrastinating) finished in hardly four hours. “Good boy,” I said when Emery told me, sitting in my rocking chair with Commelina dozing in my arms. “Good boy.”
Origin of the Pixies - "The Fading of Light"
"Queen bee" pixie raising his own successor who wants to kill him and being so proud of him for almost doing so, my beloved...
Shout-out to what this does to Anti-Cosmo's backstory in Frayed Knots, where A.C. is going through one of the most intense things he's ever faced, but can't turn to H.P. for support.
So, that's Smith... Smith's two largest roles in the Prompts are in "Dignity" - where he's married off against his will (Mid Arc 3) - and "The Other One," where he's preparing to leave Pixie World (Arc 3's finale).
Fun Fact! I've had that Prompt's announcement in my queue for 6 years... Not my drafts. My queue:
Tumblr media
I might redraw it when we get there, I might not, but... There's Smith!
So... What's going on with Smith? What's up with these hoops he's jumping through?
Smith is being set up to become the first Chief Pixie- a CEO of a subsidiary company outside Pixie World (Not counting Wish Fixers, which has been in H.P.'s family for generations).
Specifically, Smith will be running PixieCo in Hawthorn Haven: the cloudland colony that surrounds Planet Delk.
Sound familiar? If so, good eyes... We'll talk about it more later.
The thing about gynes is that only one can be dominant in the area at a time. They're eusocial insect people and their pheromones suppress other gynes' ability to reproduce.
Leaving Pixie World for Hawthorn Haven means Smith will become dominant and gain the ability to reproduce (thus making it useful to have a partner to help him raise kids, despite Smith's reluctance to marry).
We get some really interesting scenes because of that-
“It’s amazing to think I’m going to be the dominant gyne around, with my own drones to look after. And even more amazing to think that since I’ll be both dominant and of age, I’ll start reproducing within the decade. H.P. will be getting grandnymphs after all. Long-lasting ones, I hope.” Sanderson said nothing. As Smith straightened up with the box in his arms, he glanced over his shoulder. “Am I treading on your turf a bit, Mr. Firstborn?” Sanderson leaned his hands against the counter behind him, his fingers curling over the front edge. “Not necessarily. After all, I did beat you by a long shot.” “Human children don’t count,” Smith argued, bending to grab a folder that had slipped to the floor. He almost felt the asterisk fizzle into existence over his head. Wait… Turning back, he found Sanderson still leaning in the same position, now with his tongue pressing against the inside of his cheek. “Oh. You weren’t talking about humans.” “No.” Sanderson took a coffee cup from the stack and held it beneath the nozzle for grape soda. With his thumb, he pressed the lever. Cool purple liquid splashed against the sides. “It hasn’t been confirmed professionally, but I’ve watched how H.P. handles himself during pregnancy long enough to feel comfortable admitting it.” Smith’s wings quivered for a single jealous beat, then stopped. “I assume you’ve told him.” Sanderson’s eyes rolled above his shades. “You know the boss. If a bus rolls into town, he wants to be the first one to board it. If he attends a funeral, he wants to be the murderer. If one of his friends is expecting, he wants to be the father. He’s been so busy marketing PixieCo lately. With the official public reveal coming up, he’ll be furious if I steal all the attention. I’m waiting for the right time.”
"The Other One"
And that's where we kick off Arc 4!
Cavatina Mentions
Cavatina is one of the most notable things about the time period you're asking about- Pixies growing up to have kids - and he's also the reason I haven't shared much about this era.
I still won't share much because I've waited this long and I'm not spilling the details now, but I can compile some things we know about Cavatina into one place, and you can start putting the pieces together from there.
Keep in mind that 130 Reasons Why I'm Fairy Trash is ongoing. You don't have all the info, but this is what you do have:
- His full name is Cavatina Klangfarbenmelodie Sanderson. He's Sanderson's firstborn son. - He wears a green dragonfly pin, and has done so ever since he was a little kid. - In "You'll Never Know," Foop claims the Pixies don't trust him anymore, but "compared to what the Head Anti-Pixie did, he's a saint." - In "You'll Never Know," Foop claims Cavatina is selectively mute and that it disturbs him Anti-Cavatina doesn't chatter constantly, implying Cavatina didn't get quiet until sometime after his counterpart was born. - In "Shadow," Foop's alternate personality (Hiccup) faced pressure to speak about Cavatina. Among other things, he hints Foop "misused pottery tools" in a past encounter with Cavatina. He also hinted Foop "meets Cavatina's parents" every time there's a Council meeting. - Foop seems to be very paranoid about Cavatina, as he spent his time before the school dance in "Approval" searching everywhere for him. - Cavatina appeared in "All I Ever Wanted." Poof claimed he was "twice as buff [as Poof]," "bad at small talk," and noted that Cavatina's dragonfly pin "made him famous." Most notably, Cavatina claimed he'd have Poof's head on a silver platter 5 years from that point, which Poof laughed off. - According to Anti-Coriander's sideblog bio, she and Foop first meet at the Autumn Masquerade. Foop's commentary in "Approval" confirms Cavatina attacked Poof there. - Apparently, Cavatina has a squirrel familiar (a familiar being a witch who finished mortal life and is now an animal body piloted by witch magic). -> We know Foop has Denzel and Kevin as his familiars... Who do I know is a witch, associated with pixies, and possibly associated with squirrels?
Do with this info what you will.
I picked up my draft for "In Confidence" earlier this week, hoping to post it soon, but it's one of those weird timeline pieces that makes me hesitate. I'm not sure readers have enough context to make it hit yet. I might post it soon, I might not, but Cavatina and Poof both appear as small children (joining Mama Cosma and Sanderson at a dinner event), which is a pretty interesting dynamic.
I showed more sneak-peek scenes of Cavatina in that link, so... browse that "In Confidence" blog tag if you wish, but do so knowing those haven't been posted on FFN / AO3 yet.
What is Devil's Backbone?
Devil's Backbone is my far future ‘fic that picks up immediately following the 130 Prompt “Reality Doesn’t Work that Way” (the 2nd to last Prompt of the series- 130 Sums page).
It heavily focuses on Pixie World as well as things going on with the von Strangle family and the quest to find a successor... plus the closing of drama in the Celebrity Kids (Lavender Train) arc that we haven't gotten to yet.
Unless I decide to write one more closing ‘fic after this one, this is the finale of my Cloudlands AU works, so its target audience is readers who have read all the other Cloudlands AU pieces, as it brings multiple storylines together.
It has a complete outline, but one that can be shifted if I change plot points. My intention is to write a decent-sized multi-chapter - maybe 12 to 16 chapters. We'll see! It's possible I'll condense it (or split some of the scenes off into one-shots) depending on what feels right when we get there.
This story takes place during an era where there are many pixies and a new Head Pixie is in charge of Pixies Inc. It covers the plot points I mentioned earlier about the population boom and some next gen characters, many of whom are pixies.
One of our most important characters is Longwood's son, Blackwood Longwood, whom I do not have art of. I checked my drafts, but I don't have any scenes I can share that aren't full of spoilers, so... Just know that he exists, I guess.
Blackwood is a very hard worker and I think he's cute. He has a strong sense of wanting to do what's right and wanting to protect others. He's pretty emotional for a pixie, but it's underlaid with cold logical expectations... He's very "We have to do this because it's the right thing to do even if it hurts, but I know it hurts, so I'll be right there with you." I hope you guys like him.
Like Cavatina, I designed him in 2016 and even wrote the ending scene of Devil's Backbone back then, as Blackwood is our very pivotal guy and lives up to his main character position there.
You may have guessed it from the hints above, but Cavatina starts out as a sharp, friendly, and humble kid, quickly consumed by a thirst for revenge... Justice is everything to Cavatina. From the released info, it's not yet clear what seemingly justifies this level of vitriol, though I'm always open to hearing guesses. In contrast, Blackwood is stoic... Pursuing dreams of honor, justice, and duty. They're really fun to use together in a world that's seeing pixie families for the first time and doesn't know what to make of them. Blackwood will probably have been an OC of mine for over 10 years by the time you guys see him... idk how to feel about that. If anyone was wondering, yes I do get whiplashed every time I see the name Martin Blackwood cross my dash, but I only heard about that character in the last 1 or 2 years and I'm not changing this kid's name now, haha.
I'm not sure the 2016 ending will still be the ending of the actual 'fic, but there is definitely drama in Blackwood's character arc that I think is unique and fun. It's very tied to my lore and not something I'll ever get to repeat, so despite my hesitations that "oh, it might be weird, maybe people won't like it," I do think it's worth sharing as a story point. It's hyperspecific and I love it for that :)
Devil's Backbone plot points - including the finale moment - are actually foreshadowed several times in Origin of the Pixies and a couple other pieces. You probably won't catch them without the context of the 'fic itself, but kudos if you do!
So, that's an overview of things and that time period, and an explanation of why this lore about Pixie families comes really late in the timeline.
It's a tricky question to answer. "What will happen to the Pixies once H.P.'s strength and influence fade?" is probably the biggest "haunts the narrative" question in Cloudlands AU (and it's the big thing we're working up to), so it's inherently spoilery... but hopefully this is a satisfactory response.
Thanks for enjoying my work! :)
