Everyone’s theory on who the assassin clone is, is valid because! The three most popular ones all have the number 2 in their number (techs 9902 right 😅)
CODY/2224 — he literally has three twos
TECH/9902 — I’m pretty sure that’s his number, but if it’s not we all know he don’t need a 2 to be revived
DOGMA/6922 — got two twos
And if im remembering correctly the ‘mystery’ clones number is CX-2…
Now I know there’s tons of different reasons why the number two is there and it could have nothing to do with ct numbers but I’m grasping at straws.

If they make a Clone Rebellion show, I think the "filoni OC made as a stand-in for young viewers" character should be one of the surviving clones cadets. Mox, Deke, and Stak, or some other young clone like them.
Not someone special like Omega, or a "defective" clone who was treated like an outsider. Definitely not a jedi. It should be someone invested in the clone rebellion because those are their people.
Someone who relates to and feels loyalty towards the rank and file clone troopers because they were going to be one. Someone who was made with a chip, like everyone else, and who would have suffered the same fate if O66 came later.
The clones under the chips' control are this cadet's older brothers, and he wants them to be free from it, from the kaminoans and the empire, just like he is now.

Double, Double Boil and Trouble - Part 1
Tumblr media
It is I, @dystopicjumpsuit, with a fic written especially for my beloved longtime reader @goblininawig!
Pairing: Clone Trooper Boil x Reader (GN; reader practices tasseomancy/reads tea leaves)
Rating: T but minors DNI as always
Wordcount: 2.2k
Warnings and tags: fluff; minor angst; Star Wars swearing; Boil is canonically a bit of a tool; Boil still has his mustache
Summary: Boil and his friends visit a fortune-telling shop during a night out on Coruscant.
A/N: There will be at least one more chapter coming soon. Don't worry, it ends happily 🧡
Suggested listening: "Reaching for the Moon," by Ella Fitzgerald

Stak, Razor and Wooley were approaching the raucous stage of inebriation as Boil sipped his iazacal liquor and watched them in stoic silence. By his calculation, they had about thirteen minutes left before they all got eighty-sixed from 79’s. They probably would have made it, except some shiny from the 104th got a little overly familiar with the pretty Twi'lek bartender, raising Wooley's immediate ire. The ensuing confrontation got them all kicked out and banned from the club for a week.
Boil would have happily gone back to the GAR barracks and pretended to sleep, but the others were determined to make the most of their first night of shore leave, and so they ventured out into the frigid, rainy night to explore the district around the clone bar in search of further entertainment.
They didn't have to look far; the entertainment district was packed with all varieties of businesses eager to separate tourists from their credits. Unfortunately, most of them also had signs proclaiming “NO CLONES ALLOWED” displayed prominently in their windows.
We're good enough to die for them, but not good enough for them to let us have lives, he reflected bitterly.
“Look, that one allows clones,” Stak said, pointing to a small shop illuminated by lurid neon signs.
“A fortune teller?” Boil scoffed. “Might as well just toss your credits into the underworld portal. It'll get you the same result in the end.”
“Don't be such a kriffin’ buzzkill,” Wooley said. “I want to find out if there's a tall, good-looking stranger in my future.”
“If that's how you describe a super-battle droid, I'd say the odds are good,” Boil retorted.
“Well, I’m not going to stand out in the rain,” Stak said, overruling Boil’s objections.
Thus, the troopers soon found themselves in a cramped, stuffy room that reeked of incense and was cluttered with a dizzying array of mystical and occult paraphernalia. Their damp wool uniforms smelled like wet hounds, and condensation fogged the windows, making the neon city outside look blurry and dreamlike. The four fortune tellers who greeted them were dressed in elaborate, flamboyant robes that Boil highly doubted were authentic to any culture in the galaxy, but they were very effective in giving them an otherworldly—almost fantastical—air.
Stak opted to have his palm read; Razor was intrigued by the card reader; and Wooley opted for runes, leaving Boil alone with the remaining con artist—er, fortune teller. He sized up the civvie before him, trying not to look openly hostile as he searched for the words to politely decline whatever snake oil remained to be peddled. Before he could speak, though, the charlatan—kriff—fortune teller gave him a dazzling smile, and Boil blinked, taken completely off guard.
Tumblr media
You weren't particularly surprised when the first three troopers quickly paired up with your partners. Their styles of fortune telling were certainly flashier and more attractive to many customers than your quieter approach. Still, none of them could boast the numbers of loyal repeat customers that flocked to you again and again. The difficulty lay in convincing them to give you a chance in the first place.
The remaining clone did not look like the type to give you a chance. He stared at you and your partners with hard, jaded eyes and a mouth set in a firm line beneath his mustache. As his fellow troopers paired off one at a time with the other mediums, he looked more and more skittish, until it was just the two of you left in the reception room. It was clearly time to break out your secret weapon.
You gave him your patented brilliant smile that walked the perfect line between welcoming and subtly flirtatious. “Welcome. Am I right in thinking that your brothers wanted to have their fortunes read, and they insisted you come with them?”
He blinked at the force of your smile, then gave you the most reluctant half-smile you’d ever seen. “That obvious?”
“I don’t need to be psychic to see that you don’t want to be here,” you replied.
He laughed shortly. “No offense, but I don’t believe in any of this.”
“No offense taken. Perhaps you'd like to join me for a cup of tea while you wait for your brothers. When they're finished, you can pretend I read your tea leaves. No charge, of course.” You gave him a cheeky grin. “I won't tell if you don't.”
Some of the tension eased out of his shoulders at your offer. “Thanks. That’d be… nice.”
You led him into your reading room and invited him to sit wherever he liked. He looked around the room curiously before settling onto the ancient velvet sofa. You began to prepare a pot of tea for the two of you to share.
“Not exactly what I was expecting,” he observed as he looked around the cozy space furnished with soft, somewhat shabby furniture and bathed in the soft light of a few old-fashioned lamps. “Where are all the crystals and tchotchkes?”
“I prefer to minimize distractions during readings,” you replied. “Though as you can see, I do try to make it as comfortable as possible for my guests.”
“‘Guests,’” he snorted. “Is that what you call them?”
You raised your eyebrows at his tone. “Yes. And while I fully accept that you are skeptical of the services we provide, I draw the line at outright rudeness. If you intend to insult me, my colleagues, or our guests, I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
He flinched, realizing he’d overstepped. “Apologies.”
You accepted his begrudging apology as you finished brewing the tea and arranged a small plate of sweet pastries. You had plenty of experience with the clone troopers, and you knew they tended to have a sweet tooth. Besides, you’d smelled the unmistakable scent of iazacal wafting off of him, and you hoped that his sullen mood might improve if he sobered up a bit. Hence, tea and pastries.
He tugged his gloves off and laid them neatly on the low table, wrapping his hands around the cup of tea you passed him. It was a cold night, and his uniform was damp from the rain, so it was no surprise to feel the chill of his skin when his fingers brushed against yours as you handed him the drink. You poured a cup for yourself, then curled up with the other at the opposite end of the small sofa, tucking your feet under you and leaving a small gap between yourself and him. His eyes flickered over you briefly as you sat. At least his expression was no longer actively hostile, though you also wouldn’t exactly describe him as friendly. He sniffed the tea curiously.
“Is this magical tea?” he asked in a faintly mocking tone.
“Certainly not,” you replied with dignity. “I never perform spellwork on someone without their consent. Besides, the magic tea is too expensive to give away for free.”
“I can’t tell if you’re joking,” he said.
You merely gave him a mysterious smile. “I didn’t catch your name earlier.”
“Don’t you know it already?” he asked with a tiny smirk.
“Never heard that one before,” you said drily.
“You’re right. It was a low-hanging meiloorun,” he admitted. “Name’s Boil.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Boil,” you said.
“Now I know you’re lying,” he said with a self-deprecating chuckle.
“Fine, it’s an… experience to meet you,” you laughed. “What are you boys up to this fine Coruscanti evening?”
He shrugged. “Same as every shore leave. Gettin’ kriffed up. Tryin’ not to think too hard.”
You nodded. It wasn’t the first time a clone trooper had said something similar to you, and it wouldn’t be the last. “Is it working?”
He met your eyes. “Might have if those di’kuts hadn’t gotten us kicked out of the bar.”
“Music is better here.”
He frowned. “I don’t hear any music.”
“Exactly.”
He laughed, a genuine laugh for the first time since he’d walked into your shop. “You’re not wrong. What about you? Busy night?”
“Oh, you know, fleecing innocent tourists, bewitching unsuspecting troopers on shore leave, making pacts with the forces of darkness, eating more pastry than I should.”
“So an average Centaxday, then,” he said with a grin. When he smiled, his entire face transformed. His eyes lit; the lines of stress eased on his forehead; and he looked younger, less hardened.
“Maybe a few less blood sacrifices than usual,” you said with a smile.
“We’ve all had to cut back in this economy,” he replied, deadpan.
“So true. We should protest in front of the Senate building.”
“You’d certainly catch some eyes in that,” he said, gesturing toward your elaborate costume.
“Then I must be doing it right,” you replied with a tiny smirk.
“So it’s all for show, then?” he asked, his voice neutral, but his eyes speculative.
You took a delicate sip of your tea and sighed with pleasure at the taste. “People have certain… expectations about the way someone in my line of work will look. Who am I to disappoint them?”
“So you exploit their expectations to manipulate them for profit,” he observed without heat.
“You certainly don’t pull your punches,” you said. It was far from the worst accusation you’d had flung at you by a disgruntled customer, but it still stung to learn that you sat so low in his opinion. “Do you feel like I’m swindling you with free tea and pastries?”
His gaze dropped briefly to your lips, then rose back to meet your eyes. “Nothing is free.”
“And you say I’m the cynical one,” you replied with a level stare.
“Just an observation.”
“And what else do you observe about me?” you asked.
He sat back and surveyed you slowly, raking his eyes down your body. You felt your pulse kick up at his scrutiny; you were accustomed to people eyeing you like a piece of meat—so many would-be guests didn’t seem to comprehend the difference between paying for your services and paying for your body—but rarely did you have the sense that someone truly perceived you. You sat calmly with a slight, defiant tilt to your jaw, refusing to let him know he’d rattled you.
“For starters,” he said, “the fortune teller act is just that: an act. You've gotten a little tired of it, but it pays the bills.”
“I prefer ‘medium.’”
He laughed mirthlessly. “But you don’t deny the rest.”
“Would you believe me if I did?”
He didn’t reply, but merely took a long drink of tea. “I can also tell that you're clever, charming, and very good at reading people. How am I doing so far?”
“You should have led with that,” you replied, adjusting the drape of your robes. “The flattery would have made it easier to swallow being called a fraud.”
“Like I said. Just an observation.”
You smiled faintly. “Shall I tell you what I observe about you?”
“Seems fair,” he said with a confident smirk. “I’m just an amateur, after all. Can’t wait to see the master at work.”
You leaned forward slightly and gazed deeply into his eyes. After a few seconds, he glanced away, setting his half-empty cup of tea down on the low table, then he sat back and folded his arms over his chest, staring back at you with his jaw set in a stubborn line.
“You lost someone,” you said softly.
He huffed derisively, looking away. “We’re in a war. Everybody has lost someone.”
“Not just someone,” you replied, unperturbed by his interruption. “A brother.”
His eyes jolted back to yours. “Everyone knows we clones call each other ‘brother.’ We’re bred to die. It’d be more surprising if I hadn’t lost a brother.”
He snatched up his teacup and tossed back the rest of the tepid brew, his eyes hard and angry.
“May I see your cup?” you asked.
His brows snapped together as he eyed you suspiciously, but he handed it over. You gave him a soft, reassuring smile, but he didn’t relax as you peered down into his cup to examine the leaves that clung to the delicate porcelain.
“There’s a word,” you said slowly. “It’s not Basic or Sy Bisti. It could be a name.”
Despite himself, he leaned closer, trying to see what you saw.
“Boil… does ‘Nerra’ mean anything to you?”
Boil shot to his feet, staggering backward. “How do you know that?”
His voice was hoarse and strained. You set down the cup carefully and rose from the sofa.
“How the hell do you know that?” he repeated, his voice a menacing growl as he advanced a step closer to you.
Quite suddenly, he seemed to tower over you, and your heart raced as you realized that you could be in real danger. You subtly reached for the small panic button that you kept concealed in one of your many bracelets, but before you could call for help, he whirled abruptly and stormed out of the shop into the torrential downpour of the dark Coruscant night.
You sagged with relief and closed your eyes as you leaned against the wall, breathing hard. I’m safe. He didn’t hurt me. When you opened your eyes, the first thing you saw was a pair of leather gloves sitting on the low table. You didn’t need to read the leaves in the bottom of your cup to know that he’d be back.

TBB Season Three Episode 2 (Spoiler)
Hunter and Wrecker aren’t playing games anymore. It’s go time and they want Omega back!
I want Hemlock dead now! He let young cadets die in an orbital bombardment, and only three lived because they escaped in time. And all because one of his multiple experiments went haywire again!
Deke, Mox and Stak probably aren’t even teenagers yet and they just witnessed a massacre of their brothers with older clone troopers leaving them for dead. Thank goodness for Hunter and Wrecker being there when they needed them and now they can be *mostly* safe at Pabu. They need the therapy and be near good people for what they’ve been through.
Also, I think Roland knew it was Omega who they were looking for. He saw she wasn’t there and connected the dots, and he even hoped they find her when they left. Roland might be ruthless, but considering how kind Omega was to him and Ruby, he probably has a soft spot for Omega.

For a prompt, if you're inclined - how do you feel about Mace/Cody and a relaxing cup of the beverage of their choice, safe and secure in the knowledge that the trooper and/or padawan shenanigans are somebody else's problem for once?
"I think this may technically be a form of torture," Cody observes, though it's not nearly pressing enough to get him to so much as shift his head where it's firmly positioned in Mace's lap.
Mace hums, clearly uninterested in debating the finer points of galactic sentient rights acts. He offers Cody a berry, ignoring the shouts from outside and the sound of thundering footsteps that pass.
Obligingly, Cody opens his mouth, lets Mace slip the berry between his lips, and maybe catches long, elegant fingers with the edge of his teeth. Purely on accident, of course. It makes Mace's breath catch, too, which is highly satisfying.
"More tea?" Mace asks, just as a loud, ringing thud shakes the whole hallway. Someone starts pounding on the door to the Council chambers, but Mace just pours the tea like he can't hear a thing. It's truly impressive, and Cody fights not to grin.
"Sure," he says agreeably. "You think all the Masters found places to hide? Or are we going to have to stage some rescue operations?"
Mace snorts, taking a sip and then offering the cup to Cody. "If they didn't manage to hide from clones and initiates, they deserve to have oversight of the whole thing," he says dismissively. Cody feels about the same where his officers are concerned, and he hums, stealing the cup from Mace's fingers to take a sip of his own.
"You're an evil genius," he tells Mace. "Our battalions are never going to forgive you."
Mace doesn't look overly perturbed by this announcement. "Wasn't Boil just telling everyone in earshot that it must be so nice and relaxing to be a Jedi Master or a commander? Now he gets to experience it firsthand."
Given that Cody caught Stak saying just about the same thing, he's definitely not about to argue. Just hums, takes another berry from Mace's fingers, and stretches a little, obscenely comfortable. They have a solid twelve hours before they have to rescue the clones from the padawans and initiates they're minding, and he plans to enjoy every minute of it.

Making a good start one this month’s Art Fight event, if I do say so myself.
Six of these cool kids belong to other folks, but the bottom member of each trio are creations of yours truly - Tachin Sal’yc, Niah Ponds, and Beesyi Muun’bajii, part of a massive AU project in which Order 66 went sideways and there are a *lot* more Jedi and clone troopers fighting against the Empire in the years afterward.
Tachin the Pantoran is an abuse survivor accidentally picked up by a squad of infiltrators and then unintentionally adopted into their ranks. Sneaky brat. His Mando’a last name translates as “Colorful”.
Niah is part human, part Theelin, part trooper, part Jedi. She’s been raised by lots of different people in her life, okay? But her primary parent is Commander Neyo, who decided on using “Ponds” as their family name in memory of his deceased leader.
And then we’ve got my girl Beesyi the Zabrak, who’s undergone several revisions over the years but remains a bright and sunshine-y tank of a trooper. She’s a war orphan adopted by scouts Stak and Razor who helped them settle on a last name that translates as “Butt-kicker”, because why not?

To distinguish Clones whose names are used by other characters in other works, let's discuss some etiquette for the tags.
Rank: If a Clone has a rank, use it (e.i. Captain Rex, Commander Cody, That Bastard Fox)
Unit: If they operate in a unit with a specific number, use that number at the end of their name (e.i. Jesse 501, Waxer 212, Wildfire 104)
Specialization: Some Clones aren't assigned to a specific unit, but have a distinguishing specialization (e.i. ARC Fives, Commando Gregor, ARF Stak)
CT: If all else fails, using the abbreviation for Clone Trooper works just as well, especially if you don't remember or they don't have any of the following distinctions.
Use this if you want.

Clonetober #21 Clones and Their Jedi(s) 6/10
In this story, I will tell you how CT-6910 aka ARF Trooper “ Razor” and ARF Trooper “Stak”. I wish that he had a number. Anyway….I will be telling you that those 2 were trying to get CC-0411 aka Commander “Ponds” (I have two different numbers for Commander Ponds so I’m using my Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia.) and Jedi Master Mace Windu to fall in LOVE with each other. They don’t know that both Ponds and Mace are NOT in a relationship with each other. They BOTH have someone that is waiting for them when they get back to Coruscant. This HOW Razor and Stak think that Ponds and Mace LOVE each other. They each made a bet on who is right. If Razor is right that Ponds and Mace are dating, Stak has to pay Razor 15 credits and wears a Pink Bunny outfit for a day. If Stak is right that Ponds and Mace aren’t dating, Razor pays Stak 15 credits and wears a Pink Bunny outfit for a day.
When Commander Ponds and Master Mace Windu had just finished the Battle on Ryloth, Razor and Stak saw that Ponds was entering Master Mace Windu quarters. Razor told Stak that they must be dating when they heard that Mace wanted to see him IMMEDIATELY after started to leave Ryloth. Stak didn’t believe him until they listened and tried to figure out what they were saying. This is what happened. Now the dots are NOT swears but are words that Razor and Stak didn’t hear and put some words that they thought Ponds and Mace were saying.. Think as if they were playing the game “Telephone”. Razor and Stak were walking down the hall and stopped when they heard Ponds and Mace were talking about something that sounded like Mace was proposing to Ponds. This is what happened.
Mace: Ponds. Can I ask you a question?
Ponds: Sure. What’s up? Wait?! Are you thinking of…...and asking me if you should Marry….?
Mace: Yes. l want to ask you if you have any ideas on what….should do? I feel a little bit nervous asking you because I know that you wanted to……. to….. and have been seeing each other whenever……. get the chance to. I was wondering if you had any ideas that….. should do and if you would like to….. me.
Ponds: Absolutely! I’m also thinking of…... too. I think we should ask….. and….. if they have any ideas that we can ask them on what we should do when we get back to Coruscant.
Mace: I’m glad that you said that……..and……... not…………....
Ponds: WHAT?! Both you and I know that…….. has……... advice. He once told…... to tell this girl at the 79 Club that “Babe. If you were a….., I would definitely take you out” and got a…...on the face. I should mention that…... and….. were drunk. I had to go get BOTH of….. out of there before…...could ask this girl out. ……. does weird things when…...drunk. I would NEVER………... for……. even if……. the last JEDI on the Battlefield.
Mace: Thanks. You are a…...friend that I can always count on.
Ponds: No problem. I would do anything for my favorite……... You can count on that.
NOW THAT you read what Razor and Stak thought they heard, this is what Ponds and Mace really said.
Mace: Ponds. Can I ask you a question?
Ponds: Sure. What’s up? Wait?! Are you thinking of Depa Billaba again and asking me if you should Marry her?
Mace: Yes. l want to ask you if you have any ideas on what I should do? I feel a little bit nervous asking you because I know that you wanted to propose to Lily and have been seeing each other whenever you get the chance to. I was wondering if you had any ideas that I should do and if you would like to help me.
Ponds: Absolutely! I’m also thinking of ways too. I think we should ask Cody and Obi Wan if they have any ideas that we can ask them on what we should do when we get back to Coruscant.
Mace: I’m glad that you said that Cody and Obi Wan and not Anakin Skywalker.
Ponds: WHAT?! Both you and I know that ANAKIN has TERRIBLE advice. He once told Fives to tell this girl at the 79 Club that “Babe. If you were a droid, I would definitely take you out” and got smach on the face. I should mention that Anakin and Fives were drunk. I had to go get BOTH of those 2 out of there before Anakin could ask this girl out. Anakin does weird things when he's drunk. I would NEVER ask him for ideas even if he's the last JEDI on the Battlefield.
Mace: Thanks. You are a great friend that I can always count on.
Ponds: No problem. I would do anything for my favorite Jedi General. You can count on that.
Once they THOUGHT they heard that, Razor and Stak quickly ran around the corner so Ponds and Mace wouldn’t see them. Razor told Stak that he was right and that he should pay him now. Stak said, “Not yet. I’ll pay you when we get to Coruscant. I want to show you that I’m right.” Razor told him fine. After Ponds and Mace left the room and were now half way down the hall, Razor and Stak started to follow them.
When Razor and Stak came into the break room without anyone noticing them, they saw that Ponds and Mace were sitting on the couch next to each other as they were looking at Mace's Datapad. Razor told Stak that he was right but they quickly left when they saw Ponds and Mace got off the couch and was heading for the doors. If Razor and Stak didn’t come to the break room a few minutes earlier, they would have seen that Obi Wan was on the small Hologram telling Ponds and Mace a website that they should look at for ideas on how to propose to their ladies on Coruscant.
Razor and Stak saw that Ponds and Mace were heading to the Control Room. Once Ponds and Mace were in the room, Ponds called Razor and Stak to come to the Control Room. Both Razor and Stak were worried that they were caught for sneaking around.
As Razor and Stak entered the room, they saw that Ponds was on one of his knees and was handing Mace a ring. Razor and Stak DID SEE that it was a ring but it wasn’t in the ring box. They didn’t want to say anything because just in case it wasn’t what BOTH of them were thinking of. Also, if they came in earlier, they would have seen that Mace was showing the ring he had chosen for Depa and accidently dropped it when he handed the ring to Ponds so he could see it better. Ponds told Mace that Razor and Stak should be here by now. Before they turned around, Stak push the button that opens to door to make it seem like they just came in and it worked.
When they saw Razor and Stak, Ponds asked them a question as they and Mace were walking down to the Main Hanger. As they were on the Main Hanger, Ponds asked Razor and Stak if they could be Ponds Groomsmen. They were going to say yes but Ponds told them to not say a word. Once they heard that, they nodded their heads as they were getting on the Troop Transport to land on one of Coruscant’s Docks.
Once they landed and the Troop Transport Doors opened, Ponds ran out when he saw Lily and hugged her. Razor and Stak were confused when they saw Ponds running towards a lady instead of Mace. As they turned to look at Mace, he was already down on one knee and proposing to Master Depa Billaba. Both Razor and Stak were stund on what they just saw. As Razor and Stak minds were in another world. When Ponds called Razor and Stak, they were back to reality and heard that Ponds wanted to see them. As Razor and Stak came over, Ponds introduced them to Lily and told them that he was marrying her.
When Razor and Stak heard that, Stak said Congrats to them as they saw Ponds and Lily walking away. Stak nudged Razor saying, “So…..it looks like YOU are going to wear the Pink Bunny Suit and pay me.” Razor was mad that he lost but he couldn’t do anything to change the bet because they shook hands and agreed to the bet.

“Where are we?” Ponds asks, bewildered.
Mace has no idea, beyond somewhere very far from Kamino. They were on the edge of the Unknown Regions, dealing with a hyperdrive malfunction, and then—
Crashing. Here. Wherever that is.
Mace will admit he usually expects this sort of thing to happen to Obi-Wan and Anakin, not him.
“Wherever we are, I hope they’ve got a whole new ship we can buy,” Razor says disgustedly, and tosses a scrap of metal back on top of the rest of the wreckage. “No way we’re fixing that. Sorry, sir.”
“I assumed,” Mace says dryly, eyeing the scrap-pile. He’s lucky enough that he was able to cushion their landing; saving the ship would have been too much even for Anakin, but a flicker of guilt says Mace still should have tried. With the ease of years of practice, Mace shuts down the whisper, breathes out, and turns to look around them.
It’s green, all neat fields as far as he can see. A dark strip like a road winds through the distance, and Mace considers it, wary. If they landed in the Unknown Regions, if their last, shaky hyperspace jump dragged them somewhere deep into unexplored space, there's no telling what this planet is like. It’s not one Mace recognizes, at a glance, and he doesn’t like that fact.
“Smells weird,” is Stak's verdict, and he pulls off his helmet, making a face. “What is that?”
Ponds is probably rolling his eyes behind his helmet, but his voice is steady when he says, “Put it back on, Stak. We don’t have any idea who’s a friendly around here.”
“Or if there are any friendlies.” Mace watches a small shape move down the road, frowning. It has wheels, which is…unexpected. Ground transportation that doesn’t use gravitational technology is almost unheard of.
There’s a sinking sensation somewhere in his chest, a sort of grim resignation. If this planet is pre-hyperspace technology, repairing their ship is going to be entirely impossible.
“Sir?” Ponds asks warily.
Mace considers for a long moment, and then says, “We need to assess the technology on this planet.”
“Kriff,” Razor says, disbelieving. “You think it’s some kind of pre-hyperspace mudball?”
Mace tips his head towards the road, another ground vehicle making its way along the path. “I think that the fact they use ground-crawlers isn't an entirely hopeful sign,” he says dryly.
Stak mutters a curse, and very definitely doesn’t put his helmet back on. “Unexplored planet?” he asks.
Mace tries to recall the stars he saw in the one, dizzying instant before they hit atmosphere. “I didn’t recognize the star alignments,” he says. “It seems entirely possible.”
“Sithspit,” Razor says grimly, and pulls his own helmet off. “Think they’ll notice us? Not sure if we’re exactly up to a first contact mission right now, sir.”
Mace snorts, amused. If there’s ever been a less-ready party, he doesn’t want to think of it. They're all fresh off the battlefield, heavily armed, and entirely out of place. “Someone must have noticed,” he says. “We’d best prepare for it, regardless. Stak, see if you can find out supplies. Razor, ammunition and any weapons.”
“Sir!” Both troopers salute, then turn back to the wreckage. Mace keeps half an eye on them as he turns his attention to the Force, trusting Ponds to watch their surroundings, and—
It’s bright, here. Fresh, in a way he isn't used to. There are odd twists to it, strange warps Mace distrusts, but there’s a brightness to everything else that sets him a little more at ease. It’s not a steady sort of Force, but one that certainly isn't Dark.
And, in the flow of it, Mace can feel something coming.
“Ponds,” he says, and then, “Stak, Razor, quickly.”
“Sir?” Ponds asks, alarmed, as the troopers scramble to get back to them. Mace glances around for cover, finding it in the tall crops that edge the field they crashed in, and he makes for them quickly. Ducks in, letting the wavering stalks and blade-shaped leaves hide them at least a little, and raises a hand.
“Something is coming,” he says, and mental influence has never been his best area, but he threads suggestions into the Force around them, bends it, weaves a cover to keep them unseen and unobserved. Not a tactic that works on droids, but the minds approaching aren’t droids, thankfully.
“Hostiles?” Ponds asks quietly, and takes the blaster Razor passes him.
“Alarmed,” Mace allows, because he can't tell more than that. The percussive thump of spinning blades reaches his ears, and he frowns, casting a glance up at the sky. It’s a small craft, smaller than a transport, but Mace catches a glimpse of another one behind it, then a third. There are land-crawlers approaching on the road, too, several black vehicles all heading in the same direction, and he snorts.
“I think they noticed our elegant landing,” he says, and Stak snickers.
“Weird that they didn’t miss the plume of smoke and the impact crater,” he agrees, and watches narrowly as the first craft sets down, sending a wash of noise and buffeting wind across the field. “If that’s their level of tech, we’re karked, General. Razor’s good, but even he’s not a wizard.”
Mace stays silent, because he’s well-aware of that. Watching the uniformed figures unload from the craft, he tries to judge whether the outfits are familiar, but they aren’t. There's a symbol on the craft that’s equally unfamiliar, a stylized bird of some sort, black against a white circle. There’s lettering, too, but it’s certainly not Aurebesh, nor anything Mace has seen before. The language he can catch over the roar of the craft’s blades is almost understandable, like a dialect of a language he’s heard before, but he’s not close enough to make it out.
“Those look like slugthrowers,” Ponds observes quietly, studying the weapons the natives are holding. “I thought Mandalorians were the only ones who really used those anymore.”
Used them to kill Jedi, specifically, Mace thinks, and frowns, touching the lightsaber on his belt. Deflection works for slugthrowers, but Mace relies on offense more than anything. Vaapad is not a cautious style. If there is a fight, he’ll have to focus on Force use, keeping projectiles away from his men. That’s…less than optimal, given his talents.
The second craft lands opposite the first, but these natives aren’t armored. The first one out looks human, male, older and sporting a receding hairline. He glances around the field, and Mace feels Ponds stiffen faintly as the native’s gaze passes right over them, but Mace doesn’t move. Keeps the pressure against the Force steady, you don’t see us projected like a shield around them.
The native turns away, towards a dark-haired woman in black, a younger woman behind her. The younger one looks nervous, even though she’s smiling, and Mace can feel the curl of her anxiety heavy in the Force. There’s a steadiness too, however, and when his flickers past her he can see more people, a whole team, starting to filter out and set up a perimeter.
“Well, looks like we’re not getting that back,” Razor mutters, and Mace snorts quietly.
“I think a retreat is in order,” he says, because all the thoughts he can sense are examine deconstruct understand, with a ruthless edge that says they won't stop with just the ship. “Avoid the road.”
“Yes, sir,” Ponds says evenly, and jerks his head. “Looks like there’s a break in the stalks up there. A farmer’s path, maybe.”
It’s more subtle than shoving through the crops, so Mace nods. He keeps to the rear as they move, though, watchful until Stak vanishes from sight, and—
The younger woman turns, saying something in a bright, sardonic voice, and her eyes meet Mace's. Instantly, she stiffens, jerking back, and Mace curses silently. He doesn’t move, and she doesn’t say anything, just keeps staring for a long moment. Instead of alarm, there's a faint sense of surprise around her, indignation and confusion rather than fear. Curious, Mace reaches out to touch her mind, and gets a jumbled impression of familiarity, a recognition of oversight, a flash of amusement. Coulson, she thinks, and means the older man with her. A leader of some sort, clearly, but she thinks of Mace as one, too. Someone she knows.
Her mind is open, even if she’s resistant to Mace's Force suggestion. Easy to access, and Mace touches it, slips deeper. The edges of the language filter through, enough to start with, and Mace scans them quickly, trying to pick up the broad outline of it. Then, deliberately, he inclines his head to the woman—Skye, he catches in a flash of tangled thought—and turns, vanishing into the crops.
.
“Skye?” Simmons asks, curious. “Is something wrong?”
Skye stares at the patch of cornfield in front of her, bemused and off-balance. “Uh. Was—was Director Fury supposed to be overseeing this whole thing?”
Simmons blinks. “The director?” she repeats, and Skye catches May’s faint stiffening out of the corner of her eye. “Certainly not. He’s back at the Triskelion right now. He doesn’t come on field missions, Skye.”
“…Huh.” Skye stares at the place where he stood for a moment, wondering what the hell Fury’s doing in a cornfield in the middle of Iowa. Then, with an effort, she puts it aside. Fury’s a spy; if he wants them to know what he’s doing, he’ll tell them. “So, is this thing a ship? It looks kind of like a ship.”
“It is a ship!” Fitz says excitedly, voice echoing oddly from where he has his head stuck through the twisted door of the ship-thing. “Look at these materials, it looks—”
“Don’t fall in,” May says mildly as she passes, and pauses beside Skye. “You saw Fury?” she asks in a low voice.
Skye nods, jabbing a finger at the spot. “Yeah, right there. Wearing something weird, I think.”
“Everything but a uniform looks weird on Fury,” May says dryly, but her eyes linger on the cornfield for a moment.
“Guess that means it’s not a random Stark prototype, huh?” Skye offers, maybe a little desperately. May’s still a bit intimidating. Possibly. Kind of.
May makes a noncommittal sound, then heads back towards Coulson, who greets her with a smile. If her face so much as moves, Skye can't tell, and she lets out an annoyed breath, blowing a strand of hair out of her face. Spy ninjas stick together, apparently.
Still. She gives the field one last, careful look before she goes to help Grant move Fitz-Simmons’s equipment.
It’s hard to be sure, but she’s pretty sure Fury was wearing tights.
