i have a lot of complicated opinions on luigi mangione’s case

i do think he could be capable of carrying this out. from the bits and pieces:

luigi’s tweet about japan, while clumsy, reflects an underlying interest in societal improvement, even if his execution often misses the mark. engaging with societal dynamics. only a month after traveling to japan and befriending locals, he put out a lengthy tweet calling for a cultural change: this pattern reveals a tendency to act impulsively but with good intentions, reflecting someone who wants to contribute to meaningful conversations but hasn’t quite mastered the delivery.

286 theory his twitter profile now sits at exactly 286 tweets, coincidentally aligning with breloom’s pokédex number (#286). google trends data for “breloom.” whether intentional or not, it adds an intriguing layer to his online presence.

the recurring number 286 ties to proverbs 28:6: “better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked though he be rich.” he did confirm he’s an atheist but i think an argument could be made that he’s presenting this in a deliberately sadistic way, mocking religious people who would point to moral absolutes like “murder is wrong.”

last on 286 - it can be linked to a healthcare code used when appeals are denied for exceeding the time limit. the bullet casings meticulously carved out supports the idea this was an attack on the healthcare industry. could also be a signal that he’s reached his breaking point. could reflect frustration, or could even serve as a declaration that he’s done waiting for change or resolution. (as if he’s saying he’s had enough of delays, whether external or self-imposed, and is ready to act or confront whatever has been holding him back.)

everyone who met mangione spoke highly of him as a friend. he was cared for them very openly, and was deeply interested in conversations about mental health and even worked as a head counselor at stanford.

to say the least: cutting everyone on his life off before the murder seems a bit suspicious

and most of all, his sudden outburst outside the courtroom just doesn’t make sense if he is innocent.

my less supported opinion is that this is all a bit too meticulously planned out. idk. i just don’t think he worked alone.

…. i do think someone this smart and pretentious would come up with an insane plan to take down the “root of the problem” — realistically, i don’t think it would be as straightforward as described in his alleged manifesto. his reddit history suggests he has been struggling with brain fog since college, which would make carrying out this mission alone even more challenging.

last and least important, i don’t think the monopoly money was planted by him at the park, either. seems like a waste of time. Definitely feels like funny thing a New Yorker would do to piss off the NYPD

Ok apparently some people missed this, and it is my favoritest of star stable lores, so welcome to the most prolific source of star stable dunk jokes, the Ride with us campaign and it's charity.

Ever wonder why we say horsegirl is a slur? Or why we say horsegirls bite? Look no further than the absolute wreck that was star stable trying to do something good with their money.

The day is august 25th. The time? Time for revolution. Star stable online launches its shakiest campaign yet, and they do it on every possible platform. Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, even their website which still has a permanent addition. It's truly taking the world by storm.

Standing on hopes, dreams, and a mildly skewered survey sent out weeks prior, Star stable proudly proclaims that horse girls are crazy, obsessed, and weird, and that they are bullied for this. Well, no longer, they cry. They come bearing a hashtag that only massive social backlash could topple. "Reclaim horse girl".

People were (rightfully) pissed that they were likening horse girl to a slur that could be reclaimed, star stable pushed back, people got even more pissed, and finally they course corrected and changed the hashtag to "yes i'm a horse girl" because, despite our jokes, horse girl is in fact not something that can be likened to slurs people need to reclaim.

Their claims were so hilariously insane that people thought screenshots from the promotional video were photoshopped

On august 25th, they release the code RIDEWITHUS which would give every player an ingame hoodie, and with every redeem, star stable would donate 1 SEK to an unspecified charity. They did not further specify anything about this charity, only that it was meant to be for anti-bullying. As we all know, not all charities are good, so I personally didn't redeem the code until I knew where the money was going, and oh boy did I have to wait.

Over the course of the next 35 days, star stable made several instagram posts describing the results of the survey they sent out that launched this entire ordeal. I could screenshot all the individual posts but that's a lot of work so here you go, here's the source behind the information found in the posts instead.

When I asked on twitter why we weren't allowed to know what charity the money would go toward, I received the response that starstable were very busy trying to figure out a platform to let people vote for one of multiple charities that they had deemed fit (I was not told what the options would be).

A few days after the instagram posts ended, on october 4th, we were told what charities we were going to be voting for. The vote took place in a Google form, a decision a month in the making. The two charities we were allowed to pick between was Friends and Children's helpline. Finally knowing where the money would be going, I felt comfortable redeeming the code with only THREE days left until the code would no longer work and the charity collection would end.

The code stopped working october 7th, on october 10th we were finally told, officially, that 150 286 kr was going to children's helpline and then star stable raised their prices by 10 % immediately afterward and the Ride with us campaign died and wasn't mentioned ever again, kept alive only by people censoring the words horse girl and biting each other.

Truly a fuckfest. A beautiful moment in time.

University of Alberta researchers retract COVID study, citing multiple errors - Published Sept 6, 2024

Incidence of pediatric long COVID higher than had been reported in JAMA Pediatrics

A University of Alberta study on long COVID in children has been retracted.

The study found a "strikingly low" incidence of long COVID among children ages eight to 13 who contracted COVID-19.

However, during a review of their results, the authors discovered a key figure was incorrect.

The researchers had focused on a group of 271 children who tested positive for COVID and for whom there was sufficient data to determine the presence of long COVID.

Of that group of kids, only one — or 0.4 per cent — met the World Health Organization's definition of the condition, according to the study.

Incidence of long COVID 'strikingly low' in children, Alberta researchers find But after review, the authors found the actual incidence of long COVID in children and teens in the study group, is 1.4 per cent — or four out of 286 rather than one out of 271.

The authors of the article, published in JAMA Pediatrics, requested a retraction because they identified "methodological (analytical) errors" in their original report.

Dr. Piush Mandhane, a professor with the department of pediatrics at the University of Alberta, wrote a retraction note on behalf of his co-authors.

In the note, Mandhane explained that the errors impacted the researchers' estimate of prevalence of long COVID in children and adolescents and the "reported associations between pre- and post-COVID-19 symptoms."

"We identified a coding error whereby children with missing symptoms data were coded as having no symptoms. This error resulted in two participants being misclassified as having symptom resolution when they should have been classified as having [long COVID]," Mandhane wrote in the retraction note.

After the original study was published, the authors classified another child as having long COVID.

Other errors included the exclusion of 15 participants who should have been included in the study, and counting participants who fell outside the sample's age range of eight to 13 years old.

"We identified participants with COVID-19 [cases] who were recruited between one and 7.49 years and 14.5 and 19 years of age," Mandhane wrote in the retraction note.

There were other coding errors.

"We apologize to the readers and editors of JAMA Pediatrics for these errors," Mandhane wrote in the note.

"In discussion with the editors, who shared their concerns about the analyses and data reported, we are requesting a retraction of our research letter. All the authors of our research letter are in agreement with this retraction," Mandhane wrote.

JAMA Pediatrics is part of the JAMA Network, a group of medical scientific journals owned and published by the American Medical Association.

JAMA Pediatrics claims its impact factor is 24.7, which makes it the highest ranking pediatrics journal in the world.

JAMA Network declined to provide comment for this story.

"We believe the retraction letter from Dr. Mandhane speaks for itself," a public information officer for JAMA said in an email.

Dr. Kieran Quinn, a clinician-scientist at the Sinai Health System in Toronto, said in an interview that "it's important to acknowledge that research is a very difficult and sometimes messy endeavour."

"I commend the authors on their thoroughness in identifying these errors in their analysis and in transparently fixing them," Quinn said.

"In this case, they felt, along with the editors of the journal, that the errors were sufficient and numerous enough that they should actually retract the article rather than just correct it and update the analysis, which isn't always the case.

"I think that's actually an acknowledgement that they are good researchers and they're doing this in an ethical and responsible approach."

Dracula, the accused, has drained Lucy's blood and left her on the brink of death. Dracula is likely to be charged with wounding. The elements of wounding (Criminal Code (WA) s 301(1)) are

(a) wounding has been done; (b) wounding was caused by the accused; and (c) wounding was caused unlawfully.

To drain Lucy's blood, Dracula broke both layers of skin (Devine v R (1983) 8 A Crim R 45) and drew blood (Jervis (1991) 56 A Crim R 372). Additionally, Dracula caused Lucy's injury. But for Dracula preying on Lucy, Lucy would not have been injured (Campbell v R [1981] WAR 286). Because Dracula attacked Lucy, he was the operating and substantial cause of the injury (Royall v R (1991) 172 CLR 387). It is highly unlikely that Dracula had a legal authority to injure Lucy. Thus, the elements of wounding (Criminal Code (WA) s 301(1)) are likely to be established.

Furthermore, Dracula is likely to be charged with Grievous Bodily Harm ('GBH') (Criminal Code (WA) s 297). The elements of GBH are

(a) GBH has been done; (b) the accused caused the GBH; and (c) GBH was inflicted unlawfully.

GBH is defined as 'any bodily injury of such a nature as to endanger, or be likely to endanger life, or to cause, or be likely to cause, personal injury to health' (Criminal Code (WA) s 1). The injury is determined as if untreated by the court (Lewis v Western Australia [2008] WASCA 94). Lucy's injury caused her to look 'ghastly', become 'chalkily pale', and impair her breathing. Lucy needed to undergo an operation to save her life. When transfusing blood, Lucy required a large quantity of blood that took a heavy toll on her blood donor. Had Lucy not undergone treatment, it is likely that her life would have been in danger, likely fulfilling the requirement in s 1.

It has been established that Dracula was the cause of the injury. Applying the eggshell skull rule (Criminal Code (WA) s 23(b)), any previous injury Lucy may have had that exacerbated the effects of the injury are not relevant.

To prove that Dracula's actions were unlawful, the prosecution must prove the act or omission causing the injury was 'prohibited by law' or 'not excused' (Houghton v The Queen (2004) 144 A Crim R 343). Dracula was not authorised to take Lucy's blood under any relevant laws (duh). Therefore, the prosecution will likely establish GBH against Dracula.
