Hello! I LOVE Gear 5! Do you mind sharing/translating the original Japanese for when Luffy is saying “this is my peak”?
yeah, of course! so what he says for what’s been commonly translated as ‘peak’ or ‘pinnacle’ is 最高地点/saikou chiten, which is actually two words. saikou is literally ‘highest’, and can also be used to mean like ‘maximum/best/uppermost’, while chiten means site or position or point. when i went through and retranslated all luffy’s dialogue in this chapter for this fanfic i helped write, i translated this line more literally as “this is my highest point!” just because it felt more to me like something he’d say.

Watching QSMP as a linguistics person is so fun.
Aside from everyone's language learning experiences, the main thing I find interesting about QSMP is watching how certain words fall into common knowledge.
When two or more speakers of different languages start talking, very often on QSMP, they will default to English. The English language acts as a common space for a lot of cross-linguistic communication on QSMP. But there are also non-English words that fall into that common space, such as 'fofoca', 'enigmas'*, and 'no mames'.
A fun consequence of them entering the common space is that the English creators don't really "leave" that common space. The English language is the common space, so they all just speak in the common space all the time. And thus we get 'fofoca', 'enigmas'*, and 'no mames' replacing their English alternatives among the English creators like Philza and FitMC.
FitMC has gone up to Phil claiming to have 'fofoca'. Phil says 'no mames' in normal speech. I myself have seen these phrases actively replace their English alternatives among the English speaking fans when they talk about QSMP.
And the best part is that there is potential for more. Obviously there's the barrier that the borrowed word has to be in very high frequency and have a meaning that others will also want to convey. This is often the case for linguistic borrowing. But hopefully, over time, we will see more non-English words enter the common space of QSMP.
-------------------------
*While 'enigmas' is a word in English as well, the way it is used on QSMP uses the Portuguese meaning, which is different to the English meaning. English would use 'puzzles' or 'riddles' instead of 'enigmas'.

crazy that for so much of my life i've imagined the phrase "fancy meeting you here" as like a "wow! so fancy (adj.)!" like expensive china and evening gowns, it's such a treat to run into you! but it's.. not? like you think about it for two seconds and it's actually more like "fancy (v.) a cup of tea?" right? like fancy from the same root as fanciful. fancy like imagination and delight. which, i suppose, might in turn have morphed into that adjectival definition of fancy, like something so pretty and expensive it feels straight out of a dream. but i'm now like 99% sure that is not its intended use in the phrase "fancy meeting you here"

in my head: where the Hell is the word seed on this album [starts checking them off….] not the singles not YMB not Sleepwalk not ….. oh come on [stares at Inamorata] it’s you. isn’t it.
despair. i’ve actually only listened to it 3 times. because it causes me to physically implode. too much to bare. the thought of it all….
*pat pats*
I mean, i know my head wanted to connected dots just to connect them, bc James uses seed as a metaphor/simile quite enough, it's in his repertoire. He uses it even in interviews.
The funny thing is that the first other song that came to my mind after hearing "seed" was not the obvious one, the one with seed in the title.
No, sir.
It was, of course, Bleeding me.
And how could I not? When Innamorata sounds like that, feels like that, is a song like that--
I don't blame you, brain. I don't.

ok in your fanfic you mentioned Marius can’t read, is that canon or fanon or???
Had to ask @rainbowstargazerlilies about this, cause she started using it in her Lyf fic and I just nabbed it from her
Apparently it’s fanon! The idea is that he’s able to read his home planet’s language, but has refused to learn how to read or write any others.
I believe in the Lyf fic it’s mentioned that he also refuses to teach his native language to any of the other mechs (which may play into some plot points later on >:D)
