I N G R E D I E N T S Roasted Carrots & Potatoes: - Roughly 4-6 Yukon Gold Yellow potatoes, but you can use whichever potatoes you prefer - Roughly 2.5lbs of carrots - Approximately 1/2 cup of olive oil, or any cooking oil you may have - My mix of herbs & spices: · 1 tbsp of garlic powder · 1 tbsp of onion powder · 1 tbsp of paprika · 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning · 1 tbsp of fine herbs · 1/2 tbsp of pepper · 1/2 tbsp of salt * all of this is to taste, but you can really have fun with your spices and make this your own Pork Tenderloin: - 1 Pork Tenderloin - Approximately 1/4 cup of olive oil, or any cooking oil you may have - My mix of herbs & spices: · 1 tsp of lemon pepper · 1 tsp of seasoned salt · 1 tbsp of paprika · 1 tbsp of fine herbs · 1 tbsp of herbes de provence · 1 tbsp of onion powder · 1 tbsp of garlic powder · 1/2 tbsp of basil · 1/2 tbsp of oregano * all of this is to taste, but you can really have fun with your spices and make this your own Gravy: - Roughly 1/4 cup of water - Roughly 1/2 tbsp of flour - Approximately 1/2 cup of chicken bouillon - Whatever amount of juice/liquid/fat you can collect from the porc after roasting

P R E P T I M E Roasted Carrots & Potatoes: - Preheat oven to 425℉ - Start by cleaning and chopping your carrots and potatoes. For the carrots, you want them in roughly 1/4 inch thickness,. For the potatoes, you want them in edible-size chunks/cubes - nothing big, but not too small - Once chopped, you want to add them to a big bowl. Once in the bowl, you want to add the olive oil and the herbs & spices (except the fine herbs) and mix well. Make sure all your veggies are coated in oil and herbs as evenly as possible. You can use a wooden spoon or hands - whatever method is easier for you. Once mixed, you can set aside momentarily - Prep baking sheet with tin foil - After the baking sheet is prepped, you want to spread your mix of carrots & potatoes as evenly as possible and add the fine herbs on top Pork Tenderloin: - Take a fork and poke holes throughout your pork tenderloin - Pour some oil on the tenderloin and cutting board and roll the loin in oil to cover evenly - Cover evenly with herbs & spices, making sure to use half the measurements mentioned for each side (i.e.: 1 tbsp = 1/2 tbsp on each side). Once herbs & spices have been added, you want to roll/massage the blend onto the meat - Leave to rest on the cutting board for now

R E C I P E - Now that your carrots and potatoes are properly prepped, you will cook them in the oven for approximately 30mins - Once the carrots & potatoes have rang, you want to mix them around with your wooden spoon and reduce the heat to 350℉ - Meanwhile, you will transfer your pork to the caserole dish - Once oven is ready, you will re-add carrots & potatoes to the oven, as well as the tenderloin (on 2nd rack) and cook for approximately 25-30mins, flipping the meat half way - Once the veggies are properly golden and roasted in colour, you can remove and set aside. As for the tenderloin, you will take a skillet and add the juices/liquid/fat from the pork and then set the tenderloin aside as well - While the pork sits, you will heat the skillet to medium-high heat and move frequently so that the juices don't settle - While it heats, you will prepare a roux with the water and flour. Once they are mixed and there are no clumps, you will add to skillet, along with the chicken bouillon, and mix in the skillet (you can make this as thick as you wish by adding more concentrated bouillon or flour to your roux) - Once gravy is made, you can remove skillet from the heat and transfer gravy to bowl - Serve roasted carrots & potatoes, tenderloin and gravy on your plate as desired.

it comes as a shock to furina that the first person to apologize to her since the end of her trial— and the successful avoidance of the prophecy —was none other than the knave. she never expected, nor would she force, her friends and ex-colleagues— or anyone, for that matter —to apologize for their treatment of her during the trial. however, it was certainly a shock when lyney arrived at one of her theater troupe’s rehearsals with a delicious smelling cake and a card meant for furina’s eyes only, which read in elegant cursive:

furina had reread the letter about four times lying in her bed that night before she finally came to a decision. she needed this closure, whether she wanted to admit it or not. she was shocked to arrive at the cafe and find arlecchino stripped from her usual attire, wearing only a button down with the sleeves cut right at the dip of her shoulders, and her usual dress pants. she had already ordered herself some tea and was sitting with her legs crossed when furina sat across from her.

that night furina fell asleep with tears in her eyes, but for the first time in five centuries it was not because she felt self pity, but rather it was because arlecchino had said the exact words she had been needing to hear everyday since she had been cursed.

since then, the two would meet up once a week at the same cafe to enjoy fontaine’s nightlife, catch up on what could be shared, and enjoy tea, pastries, and one another’s presence. occasionally arlecchino would also attend furina’s theatrical performances, which caught the attention of a few steambird reporters. it didn’t help that a picture was taken of them at furina’s front door to her apartment after arlecchino had kindly walked her home.

eventually those walks home would lead to furina inviting her in for more tea and idle chatter, and those later turned into arlecchino cooking in furina’s apartment because she learned furina didn’t know how to make anything other than macaroni. one day, after some mindless contemplation, furina asked “would this be considered dinner dates?” without even thinking. she immediately blushed a scarlet red and was about to back track when arlecchino responded with a chuckle and a warm “i suppose they would be”.

that same night, when furina was walking arlecchino to the door to say goodnight and goodbye, arlecchino paused briefly and asked “would it be okay if i kissed you furina?” not wanting to startle her. there would be times where furina would involuntarily flinch when arlecchino moved too quickly, always quickly apologizing right after, but arlecchino understood. it was a fair reaction after all, so she was going to ensure that furina knew exactly what she was going to do and what her intentions were.

when a breathless “please” left furina’s lips, arlecchino hummed pleasantly, resting a warm hand on furina’s cheek and leaning down, kissing furina slowly but passionately, only deepening it when furina’s hands came up to grasp the lapels of her jacket. after breaking apart, a flustered, breathless furina returned back into her apartment, head spinning, wondering what she had gotten herself into.

she would later realize that what it was was a relationship with a very tender but stoic woman. it had been a long time since arlecchino had allowed herself to be an emotional being. with her children she showed them what she wanted them to see and nothing more, despite being a caring father. with the harbingers they only knew her on a professional level. but the night furina felt comfortable to finally— finally! —shed her gloves, she witnessed just how human the knave truly was.

although arlecchino hadn’t attended furina’s trial, she had received reports from her children and other subordinates of the events that took place. so she wasn’t surprised when her eyes came in contact with the burned skin of furina’s palm, which she gently took into her own hands, raised to her lips, and placed a gentle kiss upon it. “you can trust me, furina,” she whispered to the tearful woman, “i never want to see you hurt again.”

arlecchino was very gentle with furina, and while that mostly shined through in private, it was not odd— after a while —to see the two out and about with a gentle hand placed on the former archon’s back, or whispered words shared between them where no one else could hear.

lyney hadn't thought much of it first, strolling the streets of soaring heights in search of souvenirs for his siblings. a stray cat here or there isn't anything particularly noteworthy in his eyes. but then one turned into two, two into four, four into eight... each time he turns back, it seems like their numbers have doubled since he last looked.

“up to making friends, rosseland?” he calls to the cat in his hat as he finally crouches down to greet his audience, scanning over them. “hello there. what is it? do you all want food? i don't have any right now, i'm sorry.” an amused laugh, his empty hands held out as proof. “if there's a pet store nearby, why don't you show me the way and i'll go get some?”

and so, that is how father eventually finds him, crouched amidst the crowd with a can of cat food in hand. he glances up at the sound of his name, smiling guiltily as she approaches, but makes no motion to get up. “i don't suppose freminet would be interested in some cat food. perhaps a new pet, instead?”

well, hotel bouffes d'ete probably houses a dozen or so already scattered throughout, just from the cats he and lynette have adopted. there's a spot in the rafters above his bed that none of them have claimed yet, though. one couldn't hurt. lyney thinks the quiet, white one that elected to curl up in his lap and has not moved since might enjoy it.

that's more for himself than it is for his brother, though. “kidding, of course.” well, only half-kidding. “i saw an antiques shop and a toy store while i was walking around, though i haven't stopped by either just yet. i'm sure there's something that freminet would find interesting in one of them—why don't we look there?” an awkward laugh as he glances around at the cats still surrounding him. “um...or why don't you go ahead, father? i'll follow in a minute or two.”

Character Information

Tiana Powell is a savvy, sensible twenty-four-year-old woman who aims to open her own restaurant in Redwood Hollow. She may not have the money for it yet, but every day she works hard as a cook and waitress to improve her craft and eventually reach her dream. Her passions are cooking, baking, and poetry (reading it, not writing it). Her life may seem quite singular, considering her all-consuming pursuit of a distant goal, but Tiana finds joy in places you may not expect. One such unexpected joy is her friendship with rich socialite Charlotte La Bouff. Another is Tiana’s pet rabbit, Doris, who Tiana makes sure to pet fondly every morning before work.

Tiana is hardworking to a fault. Many of her peers have tried in vain to turn Tiana from her work for a single night. She’s missed new movies, potential dates, and even her own birthday party that she herself organized for the sake of her jobs. Does Tiana just love cooking that much? Well, yes and no—she adores cooking, but more than that, she values effort for the sake of a worthy goal. This doesn’t mean she would have disliked those new movies or potential dates. Rather, Tiana has become comfortable—perhaps too comfortable—with sacrifice. Her father and mother raised her with kindness and respect, so kindness and respect are what she gives to others. Those who overly burden others, however, will see a sterner side of Tiana.

Some in Redwood Hollow are well-off, but Tiana is not. She has never lived that lifestyle, despite her close friendship with Charlotte, so aspects of a comfortable life will strike her as strange. Furthermore, her father died when she was a child, so Tiana may come across as sentimental during certain moments (on her father’s birthday, for example). Finally, Tiana is a determined person but has little actual experience in a lot of areas (athletics, romance, and social media, to name a few). She will not dazzle if she enters these arenas for the first time, so be warned.

I N G R E D I E N T S · 2 boxes of beef broth (I used Campbell's low sodium boxes, but you can use whichever you prefer. Substitute with vegetable broth to be vegetarian-friendly) · Approximately 2.5lbs of carrots · Approximately 6-8 Yukon Gold Yellow potatoes, but you can use Russetts as well. · About 1/4 of a Spanish Onion · 1 tsp of minced garlic (fresh or from jar works) · 2 tbsp of Butter · 2-3 tbsp of Black Pepper or to taste (you want the soup to have a nice peppery kick to it) · 1 tbsp of Oregano · 1 tbsp of Basil · 2-3 Bay Leaves

T O O L S · Cutting board · Knife to chop carrots, potatoes, and onions with · Big cooking pot · Ladel · Blender with a Purée function (ideally)

P R E P T I M E · Start by cutting your onion and dicing it finely (doesn't have to be perfect, we'll be putting this in a blender in the end). Once the onion is cut, set aside for now · Peel carrots and chop them into medium-thick pieces. Once chopped, set aside. · Peel potatoes and chop them into medium-sized cubes. Once chopped, set aside.

R E C I P E · Start by heating your big pot on the stove, medium-high heat. Once hot, add your butter and let it melt. Once melted, add the minced garlic and let it sweat for 1-2 mins. Once the garlic looks translucent, add onion to the pot. Simmer until the onion is soft and translucent. · After sweating the garlic and onion, add one box of the broth and the carrots. Let simmer for approximately 10 minutes. · After the carrots have simmered for 10 minutes, add the last box of broth to the pot and add potatoes. Let simmer for 5-8 minutes. · After the potatoes have been simmering, add the bay leaves, black pepper, oregano, and basil. Stir occasionally. · Let simmer on medium heat for approximately one hour, or until potatoes and carrots are sufficiently tender. · Remove from heat and let cool for approximately 15 minutes. · Once cooled down, remove the bay leaves, take the ladle, and add the contents of the pot (with a greater ratio of vegetables to broth) to the blender. · Select the purée option until you get a thick consistency. Once puréed, move to a heat-safe bowl. Continue this process until all contents have been processed in the blender. · Let cool down for an additional 10 minutes. · Serve in a bowl with fresh pieces of baguette. Paisley was raised by two separate but equally loving households who were always on good terms with each other. When her father moved to Huntsville, they made sure to plan out regular trips for her to come and stay with him, and it was during one of those visits that the paradox hit. If asked about it, she will say that she was very young and does not remember much about that first week after the storm. That is mostly true.

Either way, she settled into life in Huntsville with her dad and her aaji, and in spite of the circumstances around them, managed to have a relatively normal childhood. She was encouraged to pursue anything that sparked her interest and as a result had many different hobbies over the years, including cooking, baking, sewing, jewellery making, and motor vehicles (to the extent that she could learn about them in Huntsville). Like her dad, she was also quite athletic and played a number of sports before choosing to focus on dancing and cheerleading in her teen years. She struggled slightly in school, and she never had the most impressive grades, but she always did her very best.

Through it all, Paisley has remained very sociable, very sweet, and above all family-oriented. Her best friend in the whole world is her dad, and her favourite thing to do is visit the retirement home with her aaji to see her friends, or as Paisley would put it, their friends—because she loves having her own Golden Girls moment. Because she has spent a lot of time around older town residents, she has grown very interested in the history of Huntsville and is always excited to hear stories about it, often starting little research projects by herself. It is the only academic pursuit she truly enjoys.

L’été dernier, j’ai reçu ma nouvelle assignation. On m’envoyait diriger une centurie de l’armée de terre, déjà stationnée à’ marche chéiroptérienne. À ce moment-là j’tais postée à Loyokser, faque vous pouvez imaginer le déracinement que ça implique pour moi pis ma suite. J’aurais ben aimé y aller direct, mais j’ai à mon service dix aides de camp, deux cooks, un dépouilleur tout frais sorti du séminaire, pis un écomètre. Des subalternes de confiance, mais aucun hastúl là-dedans. C’tait évident qu’y nous faudrait marcher.

Le plan initial c’tait de quitter les vieux pays par les routes impériales, une expédition de quatre mois selon mon écomètre – contre une semaine si j’avais simplement volé, mais bon, on a le miel qu’on se jabote, han? J’ai avisé la cohorte de notre date d’arrivée. Ça le faisait pas pour eux. Le légat-primipile m’a répondu que si j’tais pas en poste au premier jour de la nouvelle année, ch’rais rétrogradée pour refus d’obéir à un ordre.

En brainstormant, mon dépouilleur a mentionné une autre route, une que pus personne emprunte de nos jours : le chemin Tirmeos. Y s’agit de remonter un peu le fleuve, traverser le désert jusqu’à’ vallée thakissienne pis ensuite suivre les rivières intérieures, pour un total de deux mois et demi de marche, ce qui rentrait dins temps. L’écomètre lui a vite fermé le clapet en disant que c’te route-là avait été déclaré « écométriquement insuffisante », mais tsé, une trompe se trompe. Faque j’ai demandé au dépouilleur si les sols étaient assez favorables pour quitter le pavé. Y m’a répondu qu’on arrivait en saison sinistre pis que le mycélium nous ferait la vie dure dins rivières. Tsé ce qu’y disent : ignore l’écomètre, ignore le dépouilleur, mais ignore jamais les deux. Contre toute recommandation, j’ai élu de passer par la vieille route.

Après trois semaines de chemins de terre, on s’est engagés dans le désert. Je pensais avoir toute planifié parfaitement – les réserves d’eau pis de bouffe, les bivouacs, les antivenins pour nos mammifères, mais j’avais pas calculé le facteur camélien.

C’est là qu’y nous ont embusqués. Des Fosomdarun. On a rien vu venir. En plein milieu de la nuitte, me su ramassée une lame à’ gorge à genoux s’a dune avec ma suite. Y devaient être cinquante, soixante peut-être, des Caméliens flambant nus sauf pour leurs couvre-bosses d’albâtre pis leurs coiffes de bronze. Le genre d’accoutrement qu’on voit juste dins vieux contes préconquête.

J’avais un aide de camp qui était Camélien. Y chignait, y’implorait pour sa vie pis y gesticulait vers nos ravisseurs. Y devait penser qu’y’aurait droit à un passe-droit, mais si y’a de quoi, c’est lui que les Fosomdarun avaient l’air à haïr le plus. Les Syeb-Rinta se vêtissent de Syeb-Sana, après tout. Ça m’apparaissait évident qu’y’allait se faire égorger dins secondes qui suivraient, faque je me su parée à l’attaque, mais mon dépouilleur m’a faite des gros yeux. C’est vrai que j’tais la seule dans’ gang qui avait de l’expérience au combat. Si je faisais quoi que ce soit, je condamnais tout le monde. L’aide de camp s’est vidé de son sang pis son corps a dévalé la dune. Suivi de trois autres : deux serpentiens pis l’écomètre.

Y nous ont trainés en chaines à travers le désert pendant des semaines. Au moindre son, au moindre ralentissement du groupe, y nous frappaient, nous sliçaient, nous arrachaient un doigt, un membre, une antenne. Chaque fois qu’on passait par un campement, les désertiques locaux nous accueillaient avec une haie d’honneur de matraquage. Au début je me demandais c’tait avec des os de quel animal qu’y nous frappaient, pis un manné j’ai reçu un coup de défense.

À ce que je calcule être le huitième jour, la chélonienne s’est affalée pis a nous a toute faite débouler la dune. Al’arrivait clairement pus à trainer sa carapace au soleil. Ça nous a pris des heures pour la remonter s’a crête, pis quand qu’on est arrivés, nos ravisseurs l’ont détachée pis passée au cimeterre. Mon dépouilleur avait l’air en tabarnac, mais tsé, on peut pas toute baigner dans’ gelée royale.

Ça a pris une autre semaine avant qu’on arrive à une oasis. Ayanif était en plein midi. À ce moment-là, on en avait perdu trois autres à cause de plaies infectées. Y restait moi, mon dépouilleur, un aide de camp formicien pis les deux cooks, des fongiens qui au final semblaient vraiment plus dérangés par la déshydratation que par les sévices.

Y nous ont tirés jusqu’à une structure troglodyte, une sorte de butte de roche avec une dizaine de balcons sans rampe faisant face à l’oasis. Arrivée à mon balcon, j’ai vu la fosse qui m’attendait en bas. Les pieux avaient déjà faite la passe à plusieurs autres prisonniers. Une Camélienne en robe verte m’attendait. A psalmodiait des vers dans sa langue mâchonnée. Y semblait se passer la même chose s’es autres balcons, je le voyais aux regards de la foule qui se promenaient de haut en bas. Après ça, j’ai entendu des claquements de mandibule, avant qu’un corps de fourmi me passe dans’ face.

Mon dépouilleur, à autre balcon, s’est mis à argumenter. Je l’entendais leur dire qu’y connaissait des trucs pour irriguer les sols les plus sableux, qu’y pourrait leur être utile pour consacrer leurs morts pour qu’y trouvent la paix dans l’après-vie. Toutes ces affaires-là. À travers toute ça, lui, y’avait jamais catché que nos ravisseurs parlaient pas hiryal. Anyway, je l’ai vu rejoindre l’aide de camp dans le pit. Les cooks pis moi on allait y passer bientôt.

La prêtresse s’est avancée vers moi, a m’a détachée pis du bout de son cimeterre a m’a poussée dans le vide. Faque chu rentrée à Loyokser.

Comme on dit par chez nous : pourquoi regarder la danse si on sait déjà ’est où la bouffe? Depuis, je prends ça relax. J’ai encore un mois off avant de rejoindre mon nouveau poste.
