Creature Fantasy Writing Tips #1 Sentient and Sapient are Different Words (and You Probably Mean Sapient).

There aren't a lot of resources devoted to writing creature fantasy, animal fiction, xenofiction, or similar human-free works, and I thought I'd help out a little by offering a few tips. My goal here isn't to judge or tell you that you're doing it wrong, but instead, I'd like to help you avoid a few pitfalls or give you more options as a writer. I'm also writing these after my brain is fried from getting my novel work done for the day, so hopefully this'll be coherent and fairly typo-free. With that in mind, here's your first tip. Sentience implies an awareness of self as an organism, while sapience implies wisdom, creativity, and near-ish human levels of intelligence. I think what throws people here is all those scifi documentaries about the "search for sentient life" in the cosmos. That phrase doesn't mean they're searching for little grey men with UFOs, it means they're searching for life larger than single-celled organisms.

If you sit outside reading this, turn around, and see that a squirrel has stolen your lunch, it is accurate for you to say "my sandwich was stolen by sentient squirrels." But if the squirrel shouts insults at you, came up with an elaborate plan to steal your sandwich, and this is part of the squirrel's four-year-plan to control sandwiches in your city, the squirrel is sapient. (It's also sentient, but since all squirrels as we know them are sentient, it'd be redundant to mention that.)

"So how far down do you have to go before life stops being sentient?" I've seen studies on sentience in beetles, so I'd assume below insects.

"Wait, but then.... where is the line between sentience and sapience?" This is a little tougher. Are crows, dolphins, gorillas, or whales sapient? It's a topic for debate, and rather than give you an answer, you can use those as an example of what the line looks like in your own writing.

This distinction can feel a bit pedantic, especially when your favorite scifi and fantasy writers are probably getting it wrong all the time. The thing about creature fantasy fans, though, is that they're here for sapient non-human protagonists, and they know the distinction. You will get angry letters if you mix these up.

That said... if you are writing sentient xenofiction, that's okay! Your audience may be smaller, but a book like Raptor Red by Dr. Robert T. Bakker was immensely popular and influential despite having just a normal Utahraptor as the protagonist. Depending on how you write them, you may get some claims that you're anthropomorphizing your characters. Maybe you want that, maybe you don't. That's entirely up to you. We'll talk about anthropomorphism and disanthropomorphism later on.

That's it for tip #1 =] Just a simple pitfall that writers find themselves in. I apologize ahead of time as you're going to see a lot of non-creature scifi/fantasy fans and authors say sentient when they mean sapient, and it's going to start to irk you as you fix it in your own writing. Just remember to be kind =] Unless you're in a situation where the difference matters, it's probably best to let it slide if someone uses sentience where they mean sapience. Currently reading: I've gotten so bad at reading. The books that I've technically started with is a series I think is called Tvåhjärtattriologin? The first book is called Tvåhjärtat and (similar to the tv series) I'm only like 2 chapters in and I haven't touched it for a month 💀 But there is hope, the last series I read I got stuck in a similar way but as soon as I got going again I finished all three books in like a week. So I just have to get going probably.

Current obsession: Can I say my niece? It's so weird, I used to have so many things, but right now it feels like time is speeding past so quickly that all I can do is hold on for dear life. Work takes up around 13 hours a day (😭) and when I get home I'm too exhausted to do anything but watch random youtube videos about who know what. And on my weekends I hang out with friends and family, especially my sister/niece (she turns one and a half years in like 2 days!). I did manage to repot some plants today, and start clearing out this small aquarium for keeping water plants in (and maybe shrimp depending on how well the plants manage). I also found out that my quail love pears (I put a whole pear in and it's slowly being disintegrated).

I guess I did have some things haha, but nothing that I am experiencing like the fandoms of yore.

So in my continued adventures of being back on my bullshit (joke’s on you I never left!) I was suddenly inspired earlier today with an alternative for my tengu thaumaturge for my friend’s upcoming Pathfinder 2e game. I’d gotten to thinking how I’d always wanted to play a paladin in D&D and never gotten the chance, and how I’d always wanted to do a dinosaur rider or themed character... and it all came together in my head:

Kobold Paladin of the stars, rider of dinosaurs, enemy of asteroids.

Save yourself, mammal, I will hold off the asteroid!

What adds to the fun is that our group also includes a Ratfolk Oracle of the cosmos, and we’re in a setting where the world was kind of wrecked by a massive asteroid strike about 150 years earlier. So now I’m trying to persuade the rest of my group to form TEAM EXTINCTION with our dinosaur riding kobold paladin, our tiny rat thing oracle of the stars, and dunno what else. I feel like we need an oread who was part of the big rock, though.

I’m also trying to decide if I want to ride around on a raptor, a t-rex, a triceratops, or an ankylosaurus.

Rick and morty season 2 episode 13

This episode boasted a pretty impressive list of guest voice actors, though nothing can top Keith David as Reverse Giraffe. The Where's Waldo sequence was an apt illustration of just how wacky and out of control the situation had become. Refrigerator, Reverse Giraffe, Amish Cyborg.

It was pretty hilarious watching the Smith household fill up with one oddball character after another - Pencilvester, Photography Raptor, Hamurai, Mrs. The subtext being, I suppose, that clip shows and lazy cutaway humor are literally the death of comedy. The very act of flashing back put the Smith family in ever greater danger. Each sequence spawned a new wave of parasites taking increasingly odd forms. But the best thing about the premise was that each cutaway mattered. Not that the flashbacks weren't entertaining in their own right, especially Summer's dream sequence/dance number and Rick's barbecue. Done wrong, this episode could have devolved into a simplistic Family Guy parody, with characters setting up random flashbacks and cutaways with no real impact on the plot. Poopy Butthole was inserted into the title sequence was nice touch. Poopy Butthole that the threat of these parasites is greater than even Rick can handle. Who is this guy? Why have we never seen him before? We very shortly learned the answers to those questions, while also realizing thanks to the suspicious debut of Mr. The introduction of Uncle Steve left the viewer slightly confused on on their guard. The opening scene was a great way of setting the stage for the week's conflict. The characters never even left the house, as they were forced to figure out who among the increasingly large cast of characters was real and who was a memory-implanting parasite. The plot also became a sort of sci-fi locked room mystery. For once, the whole Smith family was involved in one overarching conflict, rather than Beth and Jerry doing their own thing while Rick, Morty and Summer explore the cosmos. Several elements immediately set this episode apart. It made for a wild romp of an episode, even if the payoff didn't quite live up to the build-up. This being Rick and Morty, it goes without saying that the premise was taken in a much more bizarre and outlandish direction. Much like the Community Season 2 episode "Paradigms of Human Memory," "Total Rickall" is a faux-clip show episode featuring clips and flashbacks viewers have never actually seen before. However, this episode created a stronger link between the two shows. Community and Rick and Morty don't have much in common beyond the fact that they're both comedies co-created by Dan Harmon.

Shadow Raptor and Shine Raptor / Cosmo Raptor

I was going to talk about how much I like the episodes featuring the Raptor Twins, and what a great thematic and character piece it was. Now I just want to vent about how HLJ totally messed with me on this release. So the Kagayaki and Kurayami Souls were released 4 days before Cosmo Raptor. The Kagayaki and Kurayami Souls went into stock 2 days after Cosmo Raptor. And The Kagayaki and Kurayami Souls were available to ship 10 days after Cosmo Raptor. To give that a little more context, I should have had this toy and reviewed it the week Uranus Saver went up, and this week was supposed to be that review.

And to top it off, after I finally gave up on the Souls, thinking it was a glitch in the system and I wasn’t going to get them, they came into stock the day after I shipped Cosmo Raptor, meaning I had to pay twice the shipping.

The Good: Despite all that, I like this toy. I’d really like to see more Zords in the future that combine together into things that aren’t just robots. It’s such a cool bit of interplay, even if I had to get a second accessory set to fully utilize it with the other Kishiryu.

The Bad: The parts are awkward though, with the heads and weapons being alright, but the Raptor legs really leaving something to be desired with how they’re designed. They all have the male ports are on the left side of every leg, and the female ports are on the right, so symmetricality is impossible when combined with other releases.

Overall, this is an excellent idea for a Zord, with amazing interplay, design, and a great introduction in its show, but lacks somewhat on execution. Still a recommendation from me, but as it doesn’t have the same level of interplay as Dimevolcano I sadly can’t suggest it for the minimum experience package. Also, those All-Parts combinations are getting tougher to build. “Cosmic” kept falling apart under its own weight.

He was originally made for a fic I was writing several years ago that I will probably never finish where he is Krolia’s [foster] dad

He “retires” from the rebel faction he was a part of, which was basically no longer actively going out and doing fieldwork. He and his husband remain planet-side where they gather information for the rebellion by hijacking the communication channels of the army, while also taking care of children the rebels find in places where battles or attacks have been

Despite never technically adopting any of them due to having to keep a false identity, he considers every child that has come into his care as his own, giving him a total of 22 children

Krolia was his last kid

He was fairly old when Krolia was around, dying at age 957 when she was young

They spent several years together though, filled with many shenanigans

One time she got scooped up by a raptor while he was watching her and he had to chase it to get her back

Despite his age, he still tried to do activities with his kids

He’s very playful, sometimes to the extent of being rowdy

He has a mane, so his head and neck are very fluffy, but his fur is shorter everywhere else

His mane puffs up, which is why he keeps it tied back a majority of the time

His name was originally meant to be Yurak, like what Krolia was going to name Keith. I remembered seeing someone at some point mention how it was a reference to the original show, the name of the character who became Sendak in VLD, and I went to check the wiki recently out of curiosity and realized I spelled it wrong this whole time but I’ve gotten attached so Yorak it will be.

I think part of the reason I put off drawing him for so long is that his color palette is very similar to Cosmo and I was going to change it and then never did.

Cygnus Mosaic - Sadr Region This was my first attempt at a mosaic and I stumbled on to the fact that I could actually do it by accident. My setup isn't perfect for mosaics - full frame mirrorless camera has a lot of vignetting and unflat corners (leading to bad stars in the corners), but I really wanted to try it. Luckily, I got enough clear nights to get enough panels to make it happen. With 21 hours and 20 mins of total integration, this is officially my most time in one image. Each panel is roughly 4 hours worth of data with the Sadr Region panel having 6.5 hours and the panel right below the Tulip Nebula having 3 hours and 20 min. Processing was a real pain, due mostly to my imaging setup but also random light gradients from being in Bortle 8. It's not perfect by any means, but I am happy with the result (doesn't mean I won't be working on trying to make it better!) . 21 hours, 20 min integration Dark, flat, dark flat and bias calibration frames Bortle8 . Completed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. 

Didn’t know this game existed. Didn’t know it was any good. Didn’t expect it to be good. But it’s really really good!

It takes a few chapters to step out from the shadow of the MCU Guardians template but by the end it might even be the best story ever told with the Guardians. Some excellent writing and character arcs going on and the story becomes as epic and grand as Annihilation or Thanos Imperative. Super surprised how well it all came together and how expert the writing was at satisfyingly paying off every set-up.

We also have some appearances and easter eggs from characters you wouldn’t have expected based on how movie-centric every other Guardians thing has become and there’s some serious appreciation for the comics in this game. And not even just in the option to have Star-Lord wearing his Giffen or DnA era costumes.
