Is it ok to ask, but that one superheroine of yours, she appeared with a blue tongue in one of Quiver's comics, gave Kato from Green Hornet energy. Have you ever drawn her aside from that comic? Will you ever draw more of her? My friend wants to find more out about her so she can cosplay her. If that's alright, I mean!

She was designed as the resident "Bruce Lee Clone" character for my fake fighting game Rumble After Dark.

Her hero name comes from 大黄蜂 dà huáng fēng which means bee or hornet, which is a very on-the-nose reference.

As to whether I've drawn more of her... uh... the answer is "sort of..."

So a while back I made a brief aside that Huang Feng is conspicuously absent from the fictional crossover fighting game Rumble vs Ranger, though her moveset is inherited by a specific character...

The "Huang" in Huang Feng translates to Yellow! And the character is literally ActiRanger Yellow moonlighting as a street-level Vigilante because apparently she has that kind of time.

Have I actually done anything with this idea? Not really! But I hope to do so eventually. (There IS an incredibly oblique reference to this in the next comic I'll be posting here soon so keep an eye out for that!)

Okay, I finally got to watch today's video, so here's the not-quite-live commentary/chaotic highlights post I promised about it :)

Not entirely video related, but I love that as usual, I see a bunch of people in the comments saying "Woah I never knew AJ stood for Alexander Jeremy" while I'm here like. I don't think I've ever heard any of them refer to Tom as Thomas before this intro. Do they normally introduce him that way and I just never noticed or-?

Eve is an icon, love the vibes going from "oh fuck" in response to "what is your name?" to her pulling a "your mum" on Sam. Got her confidence back real quick there

Not to mention the fact they actually used 'your mum' as the stimulus-

"My mum is lovely" *5 seconds later* "You ring the bell, I don't want to" Something is telling me her mom isn't that lovely

AJ saying the name Martha, trying to figure out who it would make sense for Martha to be, and then giving up by saying his character panicked. Love it

I saw a comment say it as a joke, but it really was funny how Sam kept saying change until Luke made them a straight couple (calling Tom's character 'Suzanne') lmao

Luke's character quickly becoming problematic throughout Pillars is great. First he's unfaithful, then he's saying 'gay people' and 'the t-word', and by the end he apparently represents all of the world's problems smh

Do you ever enter your cosplays in contests? I have been watching the incredible amounts of skill and technique you have been putting into your Galadriel cosplay and it seems award winning to me!

I have entered a handful of contests over the years! I won runner-up to best in show at Fan Expo Boston with my Loki in 2017!

And the following year, when Fan Expo became one of the regional qualifiers for the Masters of Cosplay circuit, I entered my original design Loki, and won both the qualifier in Boston and the final in Toronto which was super cool!

Tbh though I prefer judging! It’s less stressful for me and I love being able to encourage cosplayers in their builds and hearing how passionate they are about their work. It’s both humbling and inspiring to see all the incredible costumes that folks bring to the stage.

Now for the more in-depth part of this answer re: Galadriel!

So, cosplay competitions, at least the big ones at the level I would expect to compete at, have changed a lot over the past few years. The bar for having things “well-finished” (aka nothing “unfinished” is showing outside or in) and for having made everything yourself from scratch, is incredibly high. It’s a standard that you don’t see anywhere else in the garment world, even in film, and the truth is that I don’t think Galadriel would be good enough in that respect!

I’ve made the gambeson in the same way that the tv show did, but that means all my quilting and embroidery stitches are visible on the inside of the garment, and while I could maybe use references as evidence for why I did that, it’s generally seen as unfinished in terms of a competition piece.

I would also have to make everything to really have a chance at placing. That means pants (mine are just bought), as well as 3d modelling files for her belt hardware (right now I think I’m going to have a friend print those pieces and then finish them myself). I don’t know the first thing about 3d modelling, and I really don’t want to make pants for this!

Now to be clear, this is not me knocking either cosplay competitions or my own work—it’s just the reality of what comps generally expect vs how I’ve approached this costume. At masters level, if I want to compete and have a chance at placing, I have to plan a cosplay with that intention from the very beginning, because it changes how I approach the entire build process.

All that said, I am planning my Vax’ildan Champion build with an eye for it to be a competition piece, so there may yet be another comp in my future!

Probably reading into it too much, but it's interesting that Viktor's waistcoat folds over the left side instead of the standard.

Context:

Most mens clothing buttons/fastens over the right with the left side on top like so:

While women's clothing folds the other way:

Supposedly, this is not to distinguish gender, but to aid in dressing. This distinction dates back to when most [upper class] women were assisted in dressing. It was easier for [right handed] servants to fasten clothing which was buttoned over the wearer's left. Men, however, would dress themselves and had an easier time buttoning clothes that folded over the right.

Now, in today's society (or in the society of Arcane) this is irrelevant as most people dress themselves (with the exception of those with mobility or cognitive issues such as infants, the elderly, or the disabled). Thus, this has become nothing more than a gender-distinguishing trait in fashion.

This probably doesn't mean anything, but I noticed it while looking at references for my cosplay. It bothers me.

The possible takeaways are as follows:

Viktor wears women's clothing for a plethora of possible reasons (trans viktor confirmed!!!!?!?!??)

Viktor lacks the motor skills needed to fasten his clothes and requires some form of help

He's left handed and has custom clothing to aid mobility

It's symbolic of his physical ability and independence (like how vi and jinx have Vs and Xs in their designs)

It's a meaningless design trait that the artists incorporated without any deep, hidden meaning and I'm just projecting my historical fashion hyperfixation onto my current project.

(Although please note that every male character has vests/blazers/coats that fold over the correct way or down the middle, with the exception of Viktor and also Heimerdinger for some reason) (but also note that I didn't check every character) (and I don't seriously believe any of this, I'm just bothered by the knowledge that the way everyone's clothes fold over is seemingly random and has nothing to do with established fashion norms and no other apparent pattern. But the idea of trans viktor, however unlikely, was enough to cast my findings into the void.)

Ah, I see! I kinda get your perspective a bit more even if I still disagree.

For me, the contrast between Jayce and Viktor’s interactions make sense. Jayce is from Piltover whilst Viktor is from Zaun, so he’s naturally more distrusting and suspicious of the council. I didn’t interpret his expressions as dislike towards Mel personally, but instead him being guarded and uncomfortable with a councillor getting involved.

And Viktor’s so angry at Mel’s proposal because it’s more personal for him when it comes to weaponising Hextech against his own people. These aren’t really ‘rare and unusual reactions’ nor do they really happen because of Jayce when they’re both more about Viktor and his ties to Zaun.

In the third scene, his glare is barely any different or vicious than when he glared at Jayce in season 1, I don’t believe he’s cosplaying her as they don’t really look alike, and he’s hardly even furious. The strongest piece of evidence for his dislike towards her would be the second scene, but even then, it’s a disagreement that would obviously make him angry in the moment and doesn’t mean that he dislikes her perpetually especially when they team up by the end of the season.

I think my confusion is where even if you were right about him disliking her, none of it really seems to have anything to do with Jayce which makes the idea that he’s jealous towards Mel and thinks she’s getting in the way of them because he wants Jayce all to himself feel a bit like unnecessarily pitting them against each other over a man/ship. I don’t at all think you’re intentionally doing it. I think that’s just how this specific interpretation comes across when he doesn’t actually seem to have any dislike or jealousy towards her in relation to Jayce. Removing Jayce from the equation, he’d still be uncomfortable and stand-offish when she catches and tries to help him, he’d still be mad at her proposal to weaponise Hextech, and he’d still be mad about her catching him off guard and attacking him.

Yeah it really comes down that they don’t have any positive interactions, so it’s hard to imagine them being friendly let alone friends. Distant, cordial, professional, polite, that’s about as close as they ever get on screen (at least, while both are conscious. Mel is lovely about Viktor while he’s in the Hexgoop and seems to genuinely care for his recovery.)

Personally, and I’ve talked about this elsewhere, I don’t see Viktor as overly political or that he makes being from Zaun core to how he interacts with other people. As in, I don’t think he’s ideological about “being a Zaunite” in the way Silco is. He never even calls it Zaun in S1 and only says it once in S2 in reference to it being a vision that never came to pass.

Viktor seems apolitical to me also because he helps Salo in the commune and before that he was Heimerdinger’s assistant so I don’t know if he’s automatically against Piltoverians or Councilors and we’ve never seen him express an “eat the rich” attitude towards wealth or privilege, only an earnest desire to help those without it, specifically in the Undercity.

And furthermore to the point of his attitude towards Mel being shaded by the a Piltover vs Zaun conflict , Mel isn’t from Piltover, she didn’t grow up with those biases. She’s an immigrant, arguably a political refugee from Noxus, albeit a privileged one. So I don’t personally think considerations of class, wealth, privilege, or point of origin like bigotry between Piltover and Zaun is actually shown to factor into Viktor’s assessment of people, except insofar as he defends the Undercity from Jayce’s bigoted moment and states that he felt ostracized in Piltover when he first arrived, (note, he was ostracized in the Undercity too for his disability) before he rose to a position of prestige as the assistant to the most powerful person in the city, then set that aside to be Jayce’s partner in Hextech, the most momentous technology to hit the city in a generation. I note this, because unlike some other assessments I’ve seen, I don’t personally see Mel’s reaction to Viktor as being based on class and privilege because Viktor has BEEN in a position of prestige pretty much all the times she’s met him, either as Heimerdinger’s assistant or the co-founder of Hextech, even if he’s not AS consequential as Jayce after Jayce becomes a Councilor.

Really, all I’m trying to answer for my own sake by analyzing their interactions is, “What does Viktor think of Mel?” And I admit, we have very little to go off of. When I say rare I mean their interactions are rare. Viktor also rarely interacts with anyone who isn’t Jayce or Heimerdinger, so it’s hard to set a baseline even of how he is around anyone who isn’t Jayce or Heimerdinger, in S1 at least when we can be certain we’re getting his uninfluenced personality.

So all I can look at is evidence from their canonical interactions. And to my eyes, their interactions are shaded by polite standoffishness at best and anger at worst. It’s hard to make a case for friendliness between them with what we have. Therefore, I can only conclude that the answer to, “What does Viktor think of Mel?” Is, “He has a neutral to negative opinion based on the tone of the interactions we see.” *shrug* and that’s all we’ve got. But the narrative doesn’t really come out and give us an answer so ultimately, it’s up to everyone’s own interpretation. This is just mine.

Don't worry, i got you. As a resident Callie obsessed fanboy (not out of choice sadly), i know what to do.

Callie is a silly character, that much is obvious, but she is NOT an idiot. That is a mistake i see a lot of people make, Callie is NOT DUMB! She's energetic and always looking on the bright side of things. She's a jokey and silly optimistic who tends to make a fair amount of puns. Although she can be distracted easily and be lost in the clouds.

She is very uplifting and in touch with people's emotions, she can even tell if her cousin Marie wants a latte just by her expression alone. She is THAT GOOD at picking up on how others feel. Callie is love and beauty incarnate, hell her name probably comes from either "Caroline", meaning "beautiful (or strong) woman", or "Calista", from the Greek for "goddess of beauty". (Got that info from Inkipedia.)

If you need more help, i recommend looking at the cutscenes from Splatoon 3's single player campaign to see how she acts and the type of dialogue she says. Splatoon 2 Callie is well... she doesn't have the greatesttttt dialogue in the outpost once you get her back and the rest of her appearance is her being hypnotised and kinda... not being herself due to stress and lonelinessssss. You're not doing a Hypno Callie cosplay so don't look at Splatoon 2 for reference lmao. Splatoon 1 has a lot of silly dialogue but it's a bit TOO silly and not indicative of the current Callie, there is a difference between how Callie acts in Splatoon 1 vs. 3.

Also if you wanna do more performances, a MUST is the Calamari Inkantation performance. There are also other Squid Sister performances you can learn too if you want and i recommend watching this video by Caitlin Koi which shows all the Grand Fest performances. Just pick your favourite Squid Sisters tracks and learn them.

So there's this Saguru headcanon I've been toying with.

Instead of interpreting Saguru as Holmes-obsessed, his interest actually spans classical literature more generally, although with a more honed (obsessive) focus on certain niches (mystery, detective stories, stories about brilliant thieves, etc). Sherlock is still a character he definitely cherishes. But he actually cosplayed 'Holmes' (in an outfit Holmes never canonically wears, to be clear) as a little nod to Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes. Like. The thief he's starting to chase is a Kaitou/gentleman thief. He's dressed in all white with a goddamn tophat and cape. Saguru just wants to match the level of camp and play along.

I know this does contradict a piece of canon - in that he's still wearing his Holmes-esque outfit in a case that has nothing to do with KID (during his very first introduction). But an additional headcanon to account for this is that Saguru is avidly into historical fashion and deliberately wears it in his day to day life. Sometimes more subtly and sometimes not. I think another strong indicator of this is his pocket watch, which is certainly old fashioned. Also, I of course wouldn't be surprised if the deerstalker + inverness are also a comfort outfit for him.

And one additional thing to consider is that we haven't actually seen him quote Holmes at any point or really reference him at all. In contrast to Shinichi, the established Holmes fanatic, who has definitely quoted the Sherlock Holmes books. That is, of course, as far as I recall. It's possible that I'm misremembering.

Anyway, I just think it's a fun alternate interpretation! Not sure if I've fully embraced it, but I've been having fun exploring it.
