He's glad you're liking his bitty, and you two worked to make them a tiny house with all he needed to be independent. He wishes simply to have more alone time with you sometimes though, he's just too shy to ask.

Swapfell Sans - He's scared of his own bitty and keeps a safe distance. It doesn't prevent him from being jealous as hell though as his bitty doesn't hesitate one second to take all of S/O's attention just to piss him off, because he knows that arguing with the bitty always ends somehow with the bitty winning the argument. He's actively searching for a way to get rid of him when he is too busy cuddling his S/O.

Swapfell Papyrus - They decided to make a schedule so they can have the same time with S/O lol. There are big dramas though as both of them try to steal the other's hours when he's not looking. They're bickering and pranking each other all the time just to see what could happen.

Fellswap Gold Sans - Wine tolerates his bitty spending time with S/O, but if he needs alone time, he doesn't hesitate one second to abuse the fact his bitty is small and puts him outside or in a box lol. like on the one hand, for a while before and even after meeting Oscar, Lando kept having to hear about this "rookie" who'd soon be his teammate and how he'd be the more experienced one etc. jokes about him "looking after" the new kid and how is he settling in blah blah. none of which Lando was remotely enthused about, understandably so. unlike team sports, mentoring isn't really something teammates do for each other in racing since they're each other's greatest measure of competition.

and Lando joined F1 so young (and was in the McLaren development program even younger) that while his talent and personality often deceives a lot of people into thinking he's become established and experienced, Lando himself doesn't rate experience much when it isn't bringing race wins or the WDC any closer. and his personality on camera was largely defined by latching onto Carlos and Daniel. he was a little more vulnerable around Carlos but mostly the dynamic of big brother/baby brother was the same for both those relationships. Lando with Max F and the Quadrant folks is pretty different to who he is with those older guys.

so it's easy to see why he didn't feel at all prepared to play the role that everyone kept assuming for him when Oscar came along. and re this babbling I did I genuinely think the difference between how young and small Oscar still was when they first met in winter of 2022 to the infamous "did you grow, what the fuck" moment was transformational for Lando. you look at his eyes gluing themselves to Oscar when Oscar isn't looking and the cheeky way he keeps getting Oscar's attention - and the way Oscar can't hide his surprise and how pleased he is - and I truly think the dynamic started to shift from a sort of stiff friendliness to Lando being genuinely interested in this guy.

Lando said himself that before the season properly started, he and Oscar had been so busy when they were in the same space that they didn't really talk beyond hello and goodbye. which needn't have been the case. I think a fair part of that was Lando's poor bruised heart at having Carlos leave and then Daniel being bought out, just not ready to deal with what he could fairly assume would be some younger guy jumping in wanting to do the bromance bit and glom onto Lando's popularity - all while probably cynically planning to strategize a way to a better seat or maybe one day take Lando's place at McLaren. his knowledge of Oscar at that point was of what a strong up and coming threat he was and that he had the balls/audacity (depending who you ask) to go up against his development team. and that Oscar had gone F1 fandom viral multiple times and was actually an existing personality to F2 and F3 circles. nothing about Oscar seemed vulnerable or unsure and yet people would not stop asking Lando about him as if he were Lando's responsibility.

and as Oscar said, his low frequency personality can often get mistaken (even by Mahk Wibba!) for not caring or being engaged. and if someone wasn't aware of his social media then I could see them thinking that someone as cool and calm as Oscar was almost aloof or disinterested.

with that limited knowledge, Lando would have been right to be wary. hell, Lando was distinctly cool toward Daniel when Daniel showed up pushing the 'landan' agenda as replacing carlando. we all know they ofc became good friends. but we also know that Lando wasn't remotely going to be guilted by Netflix or the fans into feeling responsible or overly concerned for Daniel's struggles. Lando was still very young and focusing on cementing his place in the sport. Daniel's inner and outer turmoil as a 30-something was for him to deal with.

so knowing what we now do of Oscar, this was not an ideal setup for him to meet the driver and new teammate - The Lando Norris - who he'd been a fan of for almost all of his junior career.

and on Oscar's side, it is extremely safe to say that after the Alpine/DR drama he just wanted to get his head down and prove to McLaren he wouldn't be any trouble and was more than willing to put in overtime at MTC and solo with the engineers (I think he essentially said this in the Laura Winter interview). his time spent in the car would speak for itself. but I feel like it's also fair to assume that Oscar not only being a fan of Lando's already but also knowing that he was following in Daniel's wake, Oscar mostly tried to just… not be a problem for Lando. that he put all the power and control over how their relationship developed outside of the track and meetings fully into Lando's hands - if indeed a relationship would develop (and it doesn't always). Oscar was used to looking after himself and he'd probably preferred to not risk upsetting Lando's routine or worse, pissing him off. I would not be at all surprised if that's what Oscar assumed was the safest, simplest approach.

but !! Oscar not launching into a bromance for the sake of his own image and him not trying to push for a relationship immediately for the sake of cementing the partnership would absolutely have felt weird and alien to Lando. and considering what was popularly said about Oscar following the Alpine stuff, him not pushing himself into Lando's space possibly would've come off as distant or cold and probably a bit calculating/cocky. maybe even a bit as if Oscar was so sure of himself, his youth and so laser focused on his own advancement (and boy did Netflix frame it up that way, dramatic Dutch angle and all) that it seemed as if he didn't see the point or the need in benefiting from an alliance with Lando. again - that's just possible conclusions that someone like Lando who hates having his stability threatened might have felt.

this is an even more HUGE leap but we know that Oscar visibly watched Lando closely since the start of the season and was learning from him and about him. and that Andrea had already instilled his new 'team before driver competition' ethos. and that Lando had seen examples of Oscar showing up for him - as a teammate at least - when their relative 'fortunes' before the updates would regularly see Lando in a better position or a better result. and like, if I were to truly jump to a conclusion here I'd say that Lando's gradual thaw in between Australia and Monaco absolutely delighted Oscar - and that he wouldn't have expected any more from Lando at all. Lando being chummy with him during media and a bit of bonding over the state of the car at the time could easily have felt more than enough for Oscar. now I'm not saying at ALL that these friendships are remotely phony or PR because they're absolutely close in real life! but there's also no doubt in saying that like a lot of the drivers, Carlos and Daniel show up to a new teammate with the usual bromance shtick in their back pocket. and with how successful carlando and dando have proven to be with fans and sponsors and networks, they play into it with just a touch of cynicism even now. again, not saying that's nefarious at all and Lando's no dummy when it comes to personal brands and "shipping" etc. the boy is a youtuber/streamer lol so he /knows/. but yea, the 'oooh aren't we acting gay!' and overly touchy feely stuff especially is entirely for the fans' benefit. and we eat it up aslgfjsagf.

but Oscar has literally never had a bromance in any of the stages of his career and he doesn't publicize any of his non-racing friendships like the boys from boarding school he's still close to. we know he has probably a higher level of awareness of queer existence/culture than most of these guys and he doesn't hide it. I know the bar is in hell but it's significant enough that Oscar's never once used 'gay' as either an insult or as a hilarious joke - and he's had an active presence on social media since 2019 (his dad managed everything before that). when a Prema challenge was for him to kiss someone in the room and Arthur kept pushing, we know from the thumbnail that Oscar gave him a kiss through the covid plexiglass and then rolled around giggling. but he didn't treat kissing a guy in particular as 'hilarious' and he's never 'played gay' with any other guys. he also doesn't talk about Lily as if she's an accessory or "his". he brings her up in the context of things they did together or things she told him etc. the boy just doesn't know any degree of toxic masculinity apparently!!

where this gets confusing for Lando is that men are always dying to touch or cuddle or fawn over him - whether it's as a cute little brother like Carlos does (sorry fellow carlandos but that's the non-rpf truth) as a stereotypical bromance like Daniel does (and oh how I love that his ass caught feelings when he didn't mean to) or some potent mixture of fondness and attraction, which constitutes basically every other man who's met Lando.

and god knows I've written time and again how poor Lando does not know what to do with Oscar when Oscar looks with such intensity and he says so many things that show Lando respect and care and kindness. but he simply will not touch him ?? and he won't even half-fake half-serious flirt with him !! and he won't even take the bait when a bromance moment is pushed on them ! and when they're pressed close like in Twister, Oscar looks pink and flustered and refuses to put his leg between Lando's even though Daniel and Carlos have practically wrestled Lando with limbs akimbo multiple times. Oscar initiating the side hug at Silverstone was such an event that even Lando looked staggered by it. that's so strange !! Oscar is not remotely homophobic and he's not at all stand-offish physically and he's fine with people touching and hugging him. sure he doesn't do excessive PDA even with Lily but he still does some. he clearly is fond of Lando and doesn't mind when Lando decides to touch him. but we haven't even seen them hug ! and Oscar will give Lando such sincere praise and respect but he won't use hyperbole or make jokes like Carlos saying he was jealous of Lando liking Daniel or Daniel cracking sexual jokes about him and Lando.

and I fully feel like that breaks Lando's brain a little and has to make him falter at times bc everyone touches Lando and crosses easily over into some form of casual intimacy with him. Lando hides absolutely nothing and is extremely easy going. people feel very comfortable engaging with him, knowing that he'll play along so long as they're being kind or friendly.

and I think that's where the decision Lando made to let his brattier moods out around Oscar comes from. it's a very weird sort of compliment to Oscar that Lando isn't worried about pissing him off or being rejected - and I think it came from Lando being a little frustrated with Oscar for not falling in line with how everyone else is with him and not being able to get a secure read on how Oscar feels about him. as well as like I said earlier how Lando would be a little passive aggressive in his humor but Oscar never took offense. so Lando lets all his petulance and impatience come out around Oscar in a way I don't really know that he does much with anyone else? I think there's been a few times he's gotten like that around Max but Max has a good strong hand with him. but even when Lando goes Full Brat like the beloved Tic Tac Toe filming day Oscar is still endlessly charmed by Lando and you can see Lando soften and blush bc he knows he’s really letting it all out and Oscar is still being so good with him. Carlos would’ve picked him up and put him in a bin and Daniel would’ve out bratted him ajsbjsbsjd.

we know that Silverstone was a huge stepping stone for Lando and Oscar's relationship but I wish I could pinpoint before then when it was that Oscar realized just how much he couldn't apply his former racing friendships as a model for interacting with Lando. that Lando is anything but 'typical blokey guy' and even more than that, he isn't remotely typical or like anyone else in any way. definitely it was after Australia and by Austria the shift had already happened and we could see Lando watching Oscar as much as Oscar watched Lando. the trust and beginnings of feeling comfortable had already begun to be earned before Silverstone for sure.

and by the time he did this BTG interview, the genuinely fond way he talked about Oscar and mentioned the ways they're similar is such a major shift from simply saying that Oscar is calm and super quiet and fast as a driver. then we hit Singapore (where Lando sought Oscar out to spray champagne on him) the double podiums and Oscar's extension.

and then the Austin weekend and the filming they did and Lando posting that beautiful photo of Oscar smiling back at him all seems to have brought them to a place where yea, if we're being honest the lingering looks and the sense of sweetness to their shared humor is the dynamic we've had ever since.

and at this point I think what people are mistaking for a fakeout or misunderstanding is just that their lives outside of racing are so vastly different. Lando is in perpetual motion and constantly in demand and if you don't do a common activity with him like golf or padel then good luck catching him. whereas Oscar has been snared by a growth spurt that seems like it's still going on and he's either sleeping, sleeping, sleeping some more, spending time with Lily, sleeping, or spending time with his friends if possible. so there just isn't really an overlap with how their lives are right now.

to go out on another pretty out there limb, the one thing I might say is that Oscar still defaults to letting Lando call the shots about how much he wants to spend time together outside of being teammates. his own life is so uncomplicated that from his perspective it would feel a little daunting to try and insert himself in Lando's ever-changing schedule and multiple friend groups - esp since he already has so much time with Lando anyway due to the racing calendar. we know that it happens at times and that it's never broadcasted, only mentioned after the fact. it tends to be flying together or choosing to have lunch or after race meals together. the one time that rly gets to me is after Vegas when Lando could barely muster the energy to hit the tables with Max, Ria and Aarava. we find out later he spent at least part of that night with Oscar and someone mentioned that Oscar will have wanted to watch the cricket so like? it's kind of touching as well as saying a lot that the best time for their social lives to overlap is when it can be calm and quiet and Lando specifically does not want to be busy or loud. Lando dopey with painkillers and moody about crashing out of the race, possibly holed up in a hotel room with Oscar and the cricket playing on TV just sounds very sweet and likely. but other than those moments, their social lives just don't intersect easily. yet!!

but yea, I think ?? that by now they've kind of reached a comfortable place of knowing - at least for now - what their relationship is. it's why I honestly assumed Lando was finally doing the visit to Daniel's ranch and wouldn't be meeting up with Oscar in Australia. they're simply not to the point of coordinating off season schedules. even less of a surprise since he ended up spending less than 24 hours in Perth before he and Martin moved on!

ofc we as fans cannot get enough content of them together and just want more. but a lot of that is McLaren social media deciding to drop off just as McLaren started climbing up the grid ??? if they can get their shit together for 2024 then we'll see as much Lando and Oscar as we always did Lando with Carlos and Daniel.

that said he tries to keep it hidden. even when this anger seeps through, he says it's the lack of cigarettes or the fact that his bpd flares up easier in such small confines. it's obvious how angry he is with the situation - but he can't bring himself to be open with it

in spite of it finds ways to help Scott wherever possible. he can't believe how badly he misses actually working, so he helps with the non-science work whenever possible. it keeps him busy and helps him feel productive

in spite of this all he still cares about Scott so much. he always sounded like he had some kind of dream job - but now they're trapped here and he doesn't even care. what does this place have, that Scott is so unphased by these surroundings? he just wants to be his boyfriend

he wanders outside a lot during daylight hours, wishing these woods were more like the ones they have at home. the forests he grew up in lie so much further north, and he can't even tell what is and isn't manufactured. how many of these trees were replanted after the original forest was destroyed, and how much of this is actually like this?

he misses his mom more than anything. he could handle all of this if only he could call her and talk through everything he's feeling. instead he just has old voicemails saved to his phone, voice memos she recorded while working so that random sounds of saws and chisels can be heard in the background, and leagues of text conversations he rereads just to feel like she's here

feels absolutely HORRIBLE about how getting his boyfriends to visit turned this south. he worked so hard to get permission for them to visit at all - since he isn't sure when he'll actually get a break from work - only for this to happen

copes by sinking himself further into work, both to satisfy the higher ups and hope that he gets Sam and Seb out of here sooner, but also just to lose himself into something he enjoys. to immerse himself in space and all its wonder is escapism undiluted

honestly misses working alone, and enjoys late nights spent alone at the console surrounded only by the joy of science

the one thing he does miss most is the lack of an online presence. ever since they killed their internet connection - only his dedicated work consoles have any kind of connection, and those are glorified pagers with how limited their communication options are. he's got his boyfriends here in person, but everyone else in his social sphere saw him drop off the face of the earth

Sam and I were very close until his music started getting recognition and tours went on more frequently, I'm very happy for him of course but I have missed him an awful lot.

He shakes his head and adds "crazy innit" I nod and say "So, how are the boys doing?" He smiles and says "They're good, I was actually on my way to meet them, are you busy?" I shake my head and he says "Come with me then, I'm sure they'd be thrilled to see you" I smile and say "Yeah, okay" he smiles again. As we begin walking, he looks over at me and says "So, how have things been?" I shrug and say "Alright I guess, what about you? Oh the album is amazing by the way" he smiles and says "Thanks, yeah things have been pretty good"

We soon get to a neighborhood that I remember, I look over at Sam and say "I thought Dean moved" He shakes his head and says "he was thinking about it but never did" I nod and say "Wow, I really am out of the loop" he smiles and says "well you can catch up now" we walk up to Dean's house, Sam knocks on the door before walking in, I follow behind him into the living room to see Dean and Joe on the floor trying to get the PS4 to work while Drew is sat on the couch shaking his head at them, I look at Sam and say "so nothing's changed" he laughs and says "no, not really" Drew looks up at the sound of my voice while Dean and Joe are oblivious, I walk over to Drew, he smiles as he stands up and pulls me into a hug before saying "it's been too long", we sit on the couch, I smile and say "I know, I'm sorry" he smiles and says "from now on you'll be around more, okay" I nod, smiling, Sam smiles and sits next to me, he looks at Drew and says "how long have they been doing this for?" He looks at his wrist that has no watch on and says probably ten minutes or so" I laugh as I get up and walk over to them, I look at Joe and say "Do you need help?" He looks up and says "y/n? When did you get here?" I shake my head and say "A few minutes ago" he gets up and hugs me while Drew smiles at me, Joe looks at the PS4 and says "I give up at this point" I laugh as I sit back down next to Sam, I smile to myself as out knees accidentally touch.

See, I've always liked Sam but whenever I'd feel ready to tell him it'd be the wrong moment, a bad time or he'd been with someone and I didn't want to ruin our friendship either.

We all talk for a while about life and how their tours have been until Joe says "So, do you have anyone special in your life?" I look at him and say "Nope" I notice him make a quick glance at Sam, I smile and say "What about you?" he shakes his head and says "No" with slight defeat in his voice, I look at the time and say "well, I guess I should get going" Sam looks at Joe as Joe says "wait" I look at him and say "what?" He looks at Sam and says "Did you ever tell her?" Sam looks panicked and says "Oh about our show" Joe shakes his head and says "I can't do this, y/n Sam has liked you for god knows how long and I know you like him too so can we get this over with you both just confess" we all look at Joe a bit shocked, I stand up and gesture to the front door to Sam, he stands up and follows me, I turn to face him and he says "I have liked you for a while when we first met I fell for you but I didn't think I'd have a chance so I stuck with the best friend label" I smile and say "well Joe is right, I do like you, I feel the same way actually" we smile at each other before I pull him by his hoodie until our lips meet but that doesn't last long as the boys start whistling, we walk outside laughing, I say "We should catch up, just us" he nods and says "yeah I agree" I smile and kiss his cheek before saying "Text me alright" he nods as I begin walking down the road.

cos in Gus' lore or whatever in the og arcade game, he starts driving Crazy Taxis (haha) cos ppl tip him more when he drove fucked up and fast. Then he got more crazy ass drivers to join his gang/business.

According to Axel's background, he's been a fan of crazy taxi style driving since he was a kid. Like says he was born in a taxi, etc. I think it would just be so funny and cute if in this AU he always heard of the crazy cabbies who drove as getaway drivers for the right price... seeing some of the chases online and the odd sighting in person....

In game canon, Axel also claims to have been born in a cab, that's how much he loves being a cabbie. Take that for what you will??

They first meet in a really...non ideal way, with Jonah almost dying after being careless and falling off a cliff, but luckily Melaine was nearby travelling with a couple other doctors. It was a less than optimal situation, but they help him back on his feet. I'd call it love at first sight but the most he saw was just a blur of a lady asking him questions so he didn't pass out, so I'll say it was destiny instead. They were both 18ish and real stupid <333 They started bumping into each other way more after that, and at some point began a little friendship in the wastes. Jonah flirted with Melaine first but never really made a move on her, or even tried to get her to flirt back. It was mostly him joking around and using the worlds cheesiest pickup lines for fun. She thought it was charming however and started actually flirting with him. So now he's just like "🕴🏿augh." [Not actually as smooth as he seems and cannot for the fucking life of him take what he dishes out]. It was just a fling for that moment though, since Jonah was too busy thieving and running around from bandits and Melaine had her patients to care for, so their relationship ends up on the backburner.

When they're in their early twenties though, they finally make some time for each other and start getting more serious about everything. Jonah gets injured in minor ways to go see her in the new hospital she works at, and although she knows he's being reckless and stupid for that, it's reckless and stupid in a charming way <3. She's so obsessed with this weird little freak who keeps coming in with the weirdest injuries just to see her again, and she starts doing the same by meeting him out of the hospital in his outposts and other work spots. . . Until she sees him badly injured in said work spots and goes fucking apeshit. Legally as a healer She's not SUPPOSED to hurt anybody with scalpels, but hey, just try to fucking stop her while in stabbing range. Her insane combat skills make Jonah swoon and sigh dreamily. She's so passionate about everything, and the fact she can take on so many people at once without breaking a sweat, leaving them all alive on the ground but unable to get to her, all while having that murderous rage in her eyes... it just leaves him like [Heart eyes] uehehe. Oh doc you're so cool ♡ [bleeding out].

She scolds him for being reckless and almost dying while patching up his wounds [again] and he's just. So lovestruck. Now that he's seen this other side of her and it drives him kind of crazy. From there on they both see each other more often, do more things for each other, get them presents, up until it culminates in Jonah being like "oh doctor you ever hear the joke about hospital food haha.a..... its not great.... so.... hey.... why don't you let me cook for you, right ?" [Love confession]. And they're finally official from there ♡♡♡♡ The obssession is so mutual and they're both so normal about it [lie]

The adventure from Jonah's life combined with his bright eyed hopeful ideas even in the face of so much hardship everywhere just charmed her beyond words, and it helped her keep pushing in the darkest of hours. He was a man who struggled in a planet filled with danger in every corner, and yet he remained so kind, no matter the situation he found himself in. It inspired her to do the same. As for Jonah.. well, Melaine's ever gracious self was just impossible for Jonah not to love. There was something so incredible about her that he never could explain. Something about how she was always so blunt, so endlessly patient but never to a point where she would allow someone to ignore her authority, how she always held herself as someone with a very noble goal, but still remained kind and helpful for the people who needed her help... She was an angel on earth to him. Someone so admirable, so good hearted, yet with the skill and speed of a trained soldier, never letting her guard down, willing to do anything to protect what she believed in... what a woman ♡

Their relationship has always been based on both mutual admiration and in slight obsession with each other in like, a soul mate kind of way, but they worked it out and it became much more healthy don't worry. They met in university and decided to live together with a few other roommates during their time at uni (Chase was a Film student while Henrik was doing his doctorate)

They had both moved to the UK around the time they started University? Henrik had already decided he was going to move away specifically to go to Uni while Chase went back to Uni after doing work for a few years after moving. (Henrik being from Germany and Chase being from Ireland ofc)

In my mind they both got super drunk one night and ended up kissing while they were alone together. Neither of them ever acknowledged it while sober but they both thought about it CONSTANTLY.

They eventually both move away and are busy being adults for years, keeping contact but not actually seeing each other the same

Chase eventually realises he's bi and a year or so later him and Henrik meet up again finally and start to actually acknowledge what it was between them (considering now they both have had time to actually consider it as a possibility and Chase is now comfortable enough in his sexuality to actually be with a man)

Henrik does not know that Chase can understand German. Chase can't speak a word of it properly but he can listen, read, write and understand it extremely well. Chase does not have the heart to let Henrik know this because he keeps saying things (in the /pos way) about him when he thinks he can't understand him.

They both ended up growing their hair out when meeting up together after being separated- they were both the equivalent to the heart eyes, blushing emoji the entire interaction.

Chase is surprisingly a really good cook. Henrik has not improved on his cooking skills since university (he's not... terrible at it? He's just not amazing at it.)

Chase in my mind is actually a lot smarter than a lot of people take him for granted- (examples being that he immediately catches on when things go wrong and people trying to manipulate him, as well as him immediately asking questions in AF) Henrik, while being extremely book smart, can be extremely misunderstanding in a lot of situations (in my mind he's very tunnel vision when it comes to things- he goes for what's directly ahead of him without stopping to consider the things around him- Chase usually being the person to stop him to have him consider other options first)

Both of them have parental trauma regarding neglect but in vastly different ways (Henriks parents pushing him to pursue a career in medicine and never considering what he wanted to do with his life, while Chase's parents were just unbothered to his existence and never cared to check in on him to see what he was up too) both of them are no contact with their respective families.

Chase is super into media analysis- the man goes crazy for themes in film and games and he will spend hours just listening to YouTube videos explaining the depths of a single movie, especially if the movie is something he didn't actually like at first because he likes to hear the different perspectives people have on it.

Henrik is really interested in dark history, specifically of things that don't get as much attention. And mostly of things that solely happen because of people and their negligence, but also how society has improved in safety and understanding in a response to said terrible situations.

They have both movie nights and nights dedicated to analysis/dark history. They both love it.

Chase's love language is words of affirmation and Henriks is physical affection

Henrik is taller than Chase but Chase is stronger. Every time either of them tries to carry the other it always leads to chaos

They're more of a moon and stars ship imo, Henrik being the Stars and Chase being the Moon.

toji got out of the door. A few seconds later some men got into the diner and started firing guns.

In your HC, Harper and Ethan’s relationship was a real (casual) relationship that happened to have On and Off moments, or was it more like an agreement of “this is convenient for both of us, but we know we’re not in love”?

In my hc, it was a mix of both scenarios: casual and convenient with respect and friendship at its core.

Harper and Ethan came up together during their residencies, and they were clearly top of their class. We know that as attendings, they're both renowned and accomplished in their fields. I doubt that they would be so successful now if they both hadn't distinguished themselves in their respective fields during residency. After all, that's the period in a doctor's training when they start to figure out the kind of physician (or surgeon) they will become.

I do see Harper as being a few years older than Ethan because of the length of a neurosurgery residency and her career trajectory. When they meet the first time, he can't help but be in awe of her. She's intelligent, confident and beautiful. All the qualities that he finds attractive in a mate. And he's cocky enough to let her know he's attracted.

I imagine that Harper feels the same way about Ethan, but also his being young and cocky was a bonus for her. Unlike other guys she knows, he's not intimidated by the fact that she's a surgeon and knows her way around a scalpel. At the same time, he's not another surgical resident that she has to compete against, so she doesn’t worry that being with him will derail her career plans.

Both of them are super focused on excelling in their residencies. As such, they agree to a casual and convenient relationship. When they have time for each other, they hook up, go on dates, plan quick getaways, attend weddings, dance classes, etc. and just hang out.  

I imagine the Edenbrook rumor mill knows they’re a couple and that it’s casual. Neither is the type of gossip or even show much public affection, but there’s a vibe around them and people pick up on it. There’s nothing to hide, really. They’re in different sides of medicine and specialties, and there’s no power imbalance (at least until Harper accepts the Chief of Medicine job).

I do think that despite their relationship being casual, the fact that they’re sharing this residency experience together, and all that it entails (long days and nights, grumpy attendings, missed plans), means that they become friends too. When either of them is busy, the other doesn’t complain because they both put their careers first. 

They’re also not exclusive because of that. They have an agreement that if either meets someone else, it’s okay. They put a pause on their relationship and return to it when it’s convenient. 

They have very different worldviews: Harper is a rule follower, Ethan is not. Harper is brilliant and beautiful, but she isn’t someone who knows how to compromise in her personal life. Ethan was open to compromise but only when it suited him. They’re stubborn people. Hence the on and off nature of their relationship. 

The idea of “falling in love” with each other doesn’t enter their minds. Love is inconsequential to what they both want out of their lives. 

Ethan wasn’t ready to fall in love or to believe in it; his childhood had taken care of that. At the same time, in Closure I show that, despite his past, a part of Ethan always searched for love and permanence without knowing that’s what he was looking for. He wanted the love he remembered between his parents before everything went away.

If Louise hadn’t walked back into his life and if he hadn’t confronted his past, I doubt that he would have ever fully and wholly committed himself to Cassie and the idea of having a family of his own.

Finding you wasn't hard for yujin since she knew you like the back of her hand, the problem was introducing herself. She's watched you for years, she knew where you would be at this hour if your friends didn't drag you out but even then she'd know where to find you. Your friends always dragged you to the same club once in a while and today was no different.

"come on y/n! Let's go out and find you a girlfriend" said lily aka your best friend.

"Oh come on, don't you want to meet your special person? They're not just going to show up you know!" Haewon called from the kitchen.

"they might!"

"you mean that girl you bumped into last month?" lily gave you a look, "have you seen her again since then?"

"no" you sighed, "i'm starting to think I made her up or something"

"maybe that wasn't meant to be." lily shrugged, "come on, please go out with us?" She pouted and haewon joined in with her big brown eyes.

And just like before you show up at the club, dance and drink with your friends and just let loose for the night. Well that was until you saw her again, it almost felt like time stood still but in reality it was you who just stopped everything you were doing. Yujin had already spotted you when she entered and when you looked at her she smiled. Neither of you payed any attention to your surroundings as you gravated towards eachother, "hi" she smiles down at you

She really was beautiful but she had this magnetic pull towards her, you couldn't lay your finger on it but you swear you know her from some where else other than the falling Into her arms," This is going to sound crazy but I feel like I know you from somewhere? "I've been around here a few times before. Used to come her with my father during his business trips when I was younger." she let her eyes trail over your body, " Are you here with someone?"

"with friends but we've been here for a few hours already." you couldn't help but wanting her for yourself. Lily and haewon wouldn't mind if you'd leave with her, in fact they'd probably push you out the door and scream you kids have fun after you.

"want to get out of here?" as you raised an eyebrow she realized how that sounded, "sorry, I didn't mean it like that you know. I meant to just get out of here and get some fresh air and stuff."

"do you always ramble out words like this?" you grinned, thinking you had the upper hand.

"never, I guess you just make me nervous." you both laughed and made your way to the exit. As you walked Into the street, the cold night air hits your face and woke you up. You quickly sent haewon and lily a text saying you met the girl again and were now leaving, haewon just send a fire emoji and a winky smiley face with their tongue out. "so... Would you like to go get milkshakes?"

"where do you get milkshakes at this hour?"

"you have a point, what if we make them ourselves?" She suggested with a smile, convenience store's are open right now and they sell everything we need. "

" why not" you shrugged and made your way to the closest store. Yujin grabbed 2 cups and milk while you went to grab the agreed flavor of ice cream. She quickly payed for everything and you both sat down at the window.

"alright, behold the best milkshake you will ever have" she grinned as she scooped ice cream out of the tub and Into your cups.

"I doubt it'll be the best i'v ever had." you watch her as she added milk to the slowely melting scoops.

"these will be the best because... ," she took a pair of chopsticks from the counter and began stirring it, "I made them with love."

You chuckled at the cheesy line but still accepted the drink when she slipped it closer to you. "is this how you pick up girls? Make them milkshakes?"

"honestly I've never done this before." she looks down at her shake as she stirs her straw, "I've always been on the outside. Watching people fall in love."

"Oh," you were a bit surprised at the honest answer. How was that possible? She was so attractive, it was hard to imagine her being single for her whole life but then again you weren't any better, "I know how that feels. I've met some people but never really connected with them on that level. My friends were all finding their lover's while I stood at the sideline."

"Do you believe in a soulmate?" you slightly choked on your drink as the words came out of her mouth.

"Uhm, I don't know. Like romantic or..."

"No specific thing just a soulmate. What do you think it means?"

"I guess for me," you stopped and thought about it, "maybe a person that you just connect with instantly? Friends can be soulmates too so I don't think it's supposed to be romantic. Just a person who you can talk to, unfiltered and you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing."

"do you have one?" She carefully sips her drink as she looked at you.

"no, I don't think I do. I love my friends but I feel like you would know when they're you soulmate. What about you?"

"To me a soulmate is that person you can't forget about. No matter what happens they're constantly on your mind and you want the best for them even if that isn't you."

"do you have one then?"

"I think I might" she smiled slightly as she nibbled on her straw.

"what happened? If I may ask ofcours"

"promise you won't think I'm weird?" She asked and you looked at her confused but still nodded your head nonetheless. " There was this girl I saw years ago. I was with my dad and as he was working I saw the most beautiful girl I've ever seen but I couldn't go and talk to her. I kept thinking about her and I still do 'till this day. so I moved here in the hopes of seeing her again. "

" you saw her here? "

" Yeah, she was with 2 of her friends. " yujin wanted to tell you everything but knew she couldn' t so she opted for the other choice, rewrite the story in a normal way.

"have you seen her again then?"

"I think I have, she grew up though but then again so have I" should she admit it was you or would that be too bold? what if she scared you away?

"This might sound weird but the girl you saw back then, did she by any chance ride an awfully bright pink bike?" you hated that bike but it was a hand me down from your older sister. A few months after you got it you and your friends painted over it with a cheap spray can. You remember that day cristal clear as you had biked from you house to the main part of town but something always bugged you about that day but you couldn't remember what.

"not that u know of," yujin shook her head, "I think I was around 15? When I saw her she was hanging out with some friends at the waterfountain. One of her friends fell in and they took the other one with them and the girl I saw stood their laughing at them."

Realization dawned on you that you were the girl. You remember that day because you keep teasing jimin about it, she had fallen over her own two feet and tugged minjeong into the water with her. That was the moment you knew they liked eachother, they layed in the fountain as they kept looking at each other without saying a word but with shy smiles on their faces. "what did you mean with you think you have?"

Yujin didn't know how to answer, she really screwed that one up for herself. "I just..." she looked down at your hand as you placed it on top of hers.

"tell me, what were you doing at the club tonight? You were there on your own right?"

"Yeah, I just arrived when I saw you."

"you just arrived and then immediately leave with me the minute you see me?" you gently pulled her hands closer to you, "when did you realize I was the girl?"

"I always knew." she closed her eyes at the mistake she just made, "I mean, when you bumped Into me."

"I see." you smiled at her cute flustered demeanor, "so, in your eyes I'm your soulmate?" you leaned in a little and yujin's eyes drift towards your lips as she gulped.

"w-what?" She couldn't focus on anything but your lips, they looked so soft and she just wanted to kiss you.

"Do you think I'm your soulmate?" you grinned as you kept leaning in. Yujin just kept staring at your lips as she licked her own. "yujin?"

"Yeah ?" her eyes never wavered from your lips.

"what are you waiting for?" you catch her breath hitching, "kiss me already" She didn't need you to tell her twice and leaned in. After all the years craving for your kiss she finally had it, she was kissing the girl she fell in love with all those years ago and if it weren't for your soft lips against hers she would scold herself for waiting this long. You pulled away slightly and ran a hand through her hair, " If this happens everytime you make me a milkshake they really are the best."

Yujin smiled, "that can easily be arranged, all you need to do is ask." and sealed your lips with another kiss. She wondered if her dad was doing a happy dance when he read you had your first kiss with your soulmate and then pulled away as the second thought ruined everything for her. Her parents would know Everything, Includding when you would sleep together for the first time.

"are you okay?" you got worried as she looked uncomfortable, "did I do something wrong?"

"NO!" She was very quick to reassure you, "no I just... I remembered something my dad said and then him being in my head kind of ruined the moment for me?"

You laughed at the confession, "that's a very valid reason." she smiled and linked her hand with yours as you kept talking to one another. After all these years she finally found you and she couldn't be happier than she was. She finally had the girl and that without her father's help. She wondered if he would shoot you with an arrow or if that wouldn't be necessary. Her mother fell for her father without the help of an arrow so did that mean when mortals fall in love with an immortal being they wouldn't need the arrow? She put that thought to the side and enjoyed your presence for now, she'd visit her parents soon enough and then she would be able to ask them everything and perhaps ask her mother to hide your paper from her father.

I have some questions about the relationship between the two people in "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)."

When I was young, I was inexplicably drawn to songs that really told a story. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Me and Bobby McGee. Maybe that’s why I ended up becoming a writer. I don’t know. Anyway, "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes was one of those songs I was attracted to in a way I couldn’t really explain. Now that I’m older, I have some questions. A lot of them. So let’s settle in.

Let’s start with a basic premise: the two people in this song are the worst partners in the world and they probably deserve each other. But it’s a relationship that’s struggling. Hey, we’ve all been there, right? On one level, we can all identify with at least the start of the song. Over some sweet Yacht Rock beats, Rupert starts with the following:

I was tired of my lady. We’d been together too long. Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.

Great opening line. Really smart and evocative. With the smooth music in the background, this is straight outta the 1970s. There's trouble ahead, baby. He goes on to talk about reading the paper in bed — and old-timey phrase if I’ve ever heard one — and checking out the personals, where he found a letter talking about a potential partner who loved “piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain.” Oh, and they also don’t like yoga.

His interest is piqued.

Let me address the narrator here first: What the hell, man? I shouldn’t have to spell it out for you. This is the point in the evening where you put down the paper, turn to your partner, and talk. “Hey, you know what? I’ve been working long hours, and I know you weren’t crazy about the idea of me starting that yoga studio. But let’s take some time to work on us. How about we get away to the Cape?” Bottom line? This is not the way two mature adults who have been in a longish relationship handle their business.

Let’s turn our attention to the partner here: Look, I get it’s the 70s. I saw “The Ice Storm.” It was a different time. People were experimenting, wearing bell bottoms, and listening to England Dan and John Ford Coley. But I think the idea of taking out a personal ad saying all that stuff, well ... it sort of strikes me more as third-date information, you know? Not necessarily judging. Just saying.

Anyway, the narrator sends back a message, saying that “although he’s nobody’s poet,” he thought it wasn’t half bad. (Made me think of Anthony Michael Hall at the end of “The Breakfast Club” giving himself a congratulatory punch in the arm.) He wants to meet the letter-writer tomorrow at noon at O’Malley’s, so they can "plan their escape."

So the narrator’s partner walks in. They're the one that placed the personal ad. LOL. And they all share a good laugh. What a crazy romantic mixup! The end.

Dude. You’re going to tell me that at least one of them isn’t pissed at the other? Worst case, the partner walks into O’Malley’s and sees the narrator there.

“What are YOU doing here?”

“Nothing. Just came down for some piña coladas and champagne. I wanted to go out in the rain. Hoping I’d get caught out in it, maybe.”

“I didn’t know you liked piña coladas.”

“Oh yeah, there’s a lot about me you don’t know, friend…” (mumbles under breath, goes back to reading the paper...)

Things are so wrecked between them one had to write surreptitiously to a newspaper about the situation? And the other thought it was a good idea to answer anonymously? And these two have been together in what is a relatively “long-term” relationship, and one didn’t know their partner's drink of choice? (Guess they agreed to disagree on yoga. And getting caught in the rain, for that matter.) These are two people who desperately need to talk to someone about their relationship.

(Apropos of nothing, I’m curious as to some of the other things that hold this relationship together. Travel? Are they both incurable foodies? Do they have a shared love of theater? It feels like there’s an awfully thin thread keeping them together, whatever it is.)

Ultimately, my biggest takeaways here are that we’re all better off because these two are together, and not with someone else. We all dodged a bullet there. And O’Malley’s must have been a wild scene back in the 1970s.
