Fake it 'till you make it | Prompt
When Steve Harrington came out to his parents, he expected a few things to happen. Jumping back a little, he hadnât even meant to come out. His parents meant well, they did. He couldnât deny that they meant well.
They knew he was lonely when they were gone, they knew he was the type of person who kind of⊠needed someone around. He wasnât a lone wolf, he wasnât someone who could just go it alone, while they were away for months, and while Robin was lovely, Robin was also a lesbian.
So Robin was out of the question.
So it fell to the women they knew. Through their connections. And unfortunately those women tended to be, for lack of a better phrase, âDaddies money is how I intend to live for the rest of my lifeâ, and completely comfortable in switching out who Daddy was.
Steve⊠didnât have a daddy kink, thanks.
Okay maybe he did a little but not in the call him daddy kind of way. More the other way around.
After the fifth attempt to throw some business partners daughter at him, a woman whoâd actually kind of impressively deep throated a hot dog at the office barbeque while looking directly at him before heâd even gotten her name. Impressive, kind of terrifying.
An image of his life consisting of an unhappy marriage where his wife used sex as some kind of transaction rather than the big family full of love that he wanted flashed before his eyes.
He'd had enough. So when the sixth one came up, Vivian, he hadnât even been able to wait for them to explain who she was, which business associate she was related too, it just. Came out.
Or rather he came out. Spectacularly.
âIâM GAY!â Okay less spectacular initially, more manic desperation. He expected a few things to happen after he realised what heâd blurted out.
He expected anger, he expected disappointment, he half expected disownment, not fully expected, his mother would probably be on his side. He expected violence, judgement, demands of him to tell them it wasnât true, or demands that he hide it, keep pretending for appearances sake. Heâd heard the coming out horror stories.
He did not expectâ
âOh oh! What about Jonathan!! From Tennis club, honey you remember Jonathan right? Peterâs son?â His mother turning to look at his father, whoâd turned a little pale. That was it, his father would be the one to blow up, his mother was in his corner that was sort of expected but his faâ
âLynda he is not dating someone with the same name as me, thatâno. No, I donât think Iâd recover if those thin walls at the chalet struck again.â Goddammit. âWhat about Timothy, Dorothyâs nephew? Didnât she say sheâd caught him with some punk boy on that family holiday to London?â
âYes but she was trying to get points around the water cooler for being hip and homophobic, did you not hear what she called the poor boy? Iâm not associating with Dorothy, good heavens.â
âI hadnât heard, why have I not heard? Lynda weâre trying to create an inclusive work environment, I canât have homophobic people working in HR!â And John was up, newspaper down, and off to his study to deal with Dorothy muttering about how he was sure the monthly office newsletter, which included the updated company values, would have weeded the bigots out by now.
ââŠDid my coming out just get someone fired?â Steve finally broke his shocked silence, his mothers attention turning back to him, her eyes wide, mouth puckered in a little, silent, oh.
ââŠâŠMaybe.â His shoulders slumped, expression dropping to deadpan, she moved quick to reassure him âDonât worry about it, Steven, she really wasnât well liked.â It didnât make him feel better⊠okay maybe it did, one less homophobe in the workplace. âOooh, what aboutââ
It didnât stop the matchmaking. The potential suitor pool just got bigger. Especially when he quietly, defeatedly corrected himself, revealing it was bisexual, not just gay, accepting his fate.
So it was no longer Vivian, Jessica, Bethany, Barbara, Carol, etc.
It was Vivian, Thomas, Jessica, Peter, Bethany, Robert blah blah blah
âOkay but you know some people would kill for that kind of support right?â Robin spoke the truth while rewinding the latest batch of returns. And maybe he was whining, maybe he was being overdramatic, his parents were supportive and were trying to make sure heâd be happy while they were gone on their long business trips.
Honestly they could have probably just let him get a dog. Itâd have been easier. Less expensive than any of the people they were suggesting.
âI know⊠itâs just⊠they could at least try and find out what my type is. Instead itâs like theyâre trying to throw a whole Indy gay bar at me in hopes that one person just kinda sticks. And now Iâve got a whole week with them coming up in some remote chalet, what if they bring someone, Robs? What if they bring someone and try an set us up anââ
âCan your parents just⊠adopt me?â She wasnât listening âIâd kill to have the dating thing simplified for me, I canât even talk to girls, youâve got your mother doing all the work for you. Iâd appreciate them, tell them Iâd appreciate them.â
The door chimed, neither of them looked up, too engrossed in what they were doing. If a customer needed their help, theyâd make it known.
Theyâd just adjust language used to not out themselves to strangers.
âYou tell them! Pretty sure theyâd find you someone.â Apparently his parents would be thrilled to help. He wanted to be happy about that, he really did, it was just exhausting having to fend off people who were interested in him but only for the last name, the business connection, the money. He wanted someone who wanted him for him, and none of those âpotential suitorsâ fit that bill. âRobbie Iâm serious here, what ifâ what if they try when I canât escape. I canât spend a whole week in the woods with some stranger theyâve thrown at me, I think I might actually perish.â
âThen take a date.â Both young adults turned to look at the culprit behind the door chime.
âHenderson!â Steveâs favourite of the brat pack. Having met him while ferrying the kids home when Jonathan couldnât pick Will up from Mikeâs on a night when Steve had been hanging out with his at the time girlfriend Nancy. The kid was hilarious, a little bit of a know it all, but when you actually know it all, youâve kind of earned the right to be obnoxious about it. âWhat did you hear?â
âThat someoneâs setting you up with people? Which is that a bad thing?â He directed the second question to Robin who shrugged and rolled her eyes.
âNot in my book lil man, not in my book.â
âOkay Itâs not the attempt thatâs the problem, itâs the quantity of attempts, and the quality of people theyâre throwing at me! Quantity and quality are the issues here, people, itâs not that theyâre doing it,â
âItâs that theyâre doing it badly.â Dustin finished, Steve pointing at him with clicked finger guns.
âExactly⊠and I donât want my parents at my future wedding claiming they were responsible for getting us together cause thatâd be weird! And pathetic. I want a fun first date story, a meet cute, or a ridiculous âyeah we were trapped in an elevator for like, three hours and bondedâ kind of story, I want an âI met them on a trainâ or âthey hit on me at the bar, and it just workedâ not an âmy parents set us up in a remote cabin in the woodsâ, do you get me?â
âI can see your dilemma, but remote cabins in the woods can be really romanâ"
âNobody wants to hear about you and Suzie again! We get it, sheâs your soulmate and future nerd wife you lucky little shithead.â Long distance and tricky as it may be, they were kind of perfect for each other. âNow what were you saying about taking a date?â
âExactly that, take a date with you. Tell them youâre bringing someone and just⊠bring someone.â Dustin let his eyes flick to robin purposefully, quirking his head a little to subtly nod at her âyou could take Robinâ as if to say nowâs your chance, dickhead, take it.
âSomehow I doubt Robin would be able to convince them that we were dating.â
âCause weâre not.â
âAnd will not be.â
âAt all.â
âEhâ"
ââverâ
âYou guys make no sense.â
âWe make perfect sense, my strange little child friend. You just donât have all the information to make it make sense.â Robin wiggled her fingers at him as if it was some kind of mystery, it was to Dustin but that wasnât important. âHe does have a point though, you could take a date, thereâs plenty of people in Hawkins whoâd kill for a rich person get away, just gotta let them know that itâs a pretend date situation. Or⊠actually find a date. If you can.â
The "you suck" board flashed into his mind momentarily. He couldnât. Not within the time frame he had. He was so far off his game his parents were matchmaking for him.
Dustinâs voice broke through his thoughts once more, offering salvation. âI know someone you could hire for thatâŠâ hallelujah, Dustin Henderson everybody.

Workers at all federally regulated workplaces will be able to access free menstrual products while on the job starting Friday, a move the government called a big step towards workplace gender equity. About 18,000 federally regulated private and public workplaces, such as airports, banks and postal services, must now provide free pads and tampons to employees in an accessible and private workplace location, including washrooms or office supply cabinets. The government said it sees access to these products as a basic human rights issue, just like providing toilet paper to workers. In a press release Friday, it said the move aims to "create healthier and more inclusive workplaces, improve gender equity, and reduce stigma around periods."

Happy Trans Day of Visibility!
Transgender Day of Visibility is recognized internationally each year on March 31st. Today, we celebrate the strength, joy, and resilience of transgender, Two-Spirit, non-binary and gender diverse people across the globe. Letâs continue to stand up, show support, and create a world of respect and equality for allâ not just today, but every day!
As anti-trans legislation spreads and attacks on healthcare, sports, and basic rights increase, we must stand in solidarity with our trans siblings. If youâre itching to make a real difference for our trans community today (and honestly, every day), why not consider donating to some of these amazing organizations that are doing such vital work? Your generosity would be greatly appreciated!
Point of Pride focuses on helping vulnerable members of the queer community feel seen and have access to life-saving health and wellness programs and supports like their Annual Transgender Surgery Fund, their HRT Access Fund, Free Chest Binders + Free Femme Shapewear and more! They have awarded almost half a million dollars in direct financial assistance and donated thousands of gender-affirming garments to trans youth and adults in all 50 American states and around the world. Donate to Point of Pride here!
FOR THE GWORLS is a Black, trans-led collective that curates parties to fundraise money to help Black transgender people pay for their rent, gender affirming surgeries, smaller co-pays for medicine/doctorâs visits, and travel assistance. Thereâs two donation options for this collective: the rent assistance fund and the medical assistance fund. Take your pick~!
G.L.I.T.S is a Black, trans-led advocacy and direct services organization that is dedicated to fighting systemic discrimination against marginalized communities, in New York City and beyond. Founded in 2016, G.L.I.T.S addresses barriers faced by community members at the intersection of gender, race, and class through direct services, advocacy, mass mobilization, media engagement, and public education. El/La Para TransLatinas works towards a world where TransLatinas are protected, celebrated, and loved, where trans/intersex/gender diverse Latinx people are welcome, safe, represented and valued in all spheres of life. They envision a future in which the human rights to migration, housing, healthcare, food, and safety are respected and protected. For more than 30 years, El/La has been an advocate in the transgender community seeking justice for translatinas. They were THE first translatina HIV prevention program in Northern California. Donate to them here~!
TGEU (Trans Europe and Central Asia) is a trans-led nonprofit for the rights and wellbeing of trans people in Europe and Central Asia. TGEU was founded in 2005 under the name Transgender Europe e.V. Since then, theyâve established themselves as a legitimate voice for the trans community. In 2018, they expanded their regional scope to include Central Asia. TGEU now serves trans people in over 50 countries in Europe and Central Asia. TGEU envisions a world free from discrimination where gender diversity is celebrated, where trans people are valued, and where trans movements are self-aware, intersectional, and evolving to meet the needs of a diverse and resilient community. You can donate to them here.

Remember: genuine respectful curiosity is always better than fearful ignorance
I attended a workplace culture and inclusivity training today in which the presenter said with his whole chest that to avoid conflict it may be better to avoid talking about any âsensitiveâ topics at work like politics, religion etc.
This is absolute bullshit. The only way to understand different people is to share and get curious and find connection. You cannot promote inclusivity by living in a culture of fear where youâre afraid asking a question about something you donât understand will get you in trouble.
All that creates is an echo chamber where you can only talk about âsafeâ topics, which are invariably ideas shared by the dominant population in that circle.
This applies in every circle - liberals, conservatives, at work, with friends, in society.
So get curious!! And respond to curiosity with kindness and respect rather than judge them for ignorance!!
#I donât even know how to tag this so Iâm just throwing it out there#the workplace training incited my sense of justice

by Nissan Shtrauchler
A deeply concerning trend has emerged in Norway, where Jewish community members fear seeking medical care due to growing anti-Israel sentiment among healthcare workers. In an unprecedented letter to health authorities, Jewish leaders warn that community members are hiding their identities in medical settingsâa situation not experienced âsince World War II.â
The letter, signed by Marius Gaarder, chairman of the Jewish community in Oslo, and John Arne Moen from the Jewish community in Trondheim, raises alarming concerns.
âShortly after October 7, 2023, alongside growing anti-Israel mobilization among segments of healthcare workers, health institutions, and medical experts, several members of the Jewish community expressed concern that they would feel uncomfortable seeking medical treatment and fear they wouldnât receive optimal care if they revealed they were Jewish,â the letter states. âThis is a situation we havenât experienced since World War II,â it adds.
Dr. Rolf Kirschner, a Jewish physician with 45 years of experience in Norwayâs public health system and a member of the Norwegian Medical Association, described it as an unprecedented phenomenon. âPeople donât dare wear Jewish symbols like the Star of David when going for examinations, and Jewish patients fear having their names called aloud in waiting rooms out of concern that caregivers or others will discover they are Jewish,â he explained.
The situation has worsened as patients encounter politically charged environments. âSome Jewish patients were alarmed when they encountered healthcare professionals displaying overtly political posters and pamphlets expressing support for Palestinians, and theyâre afraid to complain about this for fear of negative reactions from medical staff on whom their health depends,â Kirschner added.
While acknowledging freedom of expression, Kirschner believes certain political displays should remain outside medical facilities: âThe letter calls on health services, relevant organizations, and the government to ensure Jews feel comfortable in hospitals and donât fear approaching and receiving medical care, or hide their identity in hospitals.â
Norwayâs Jewish population is smallâapproximately 1,500 registered Jews nationwide, with 800 residing in Oslo. This vulnerability is compounded by the Norwegian governmentâs strongly pro-Palestinian stance. Kirschner reports that community members have expressed fears about receiving substandard care due to solidarity shown by various medical professional organizations with Palestinian causes and calls for boycotts against Israel.
Though Kirschner cited only five or six documented cases of patients sharing these concerns with community leaders, he believes they indicate a broader pattern. These anxieties intensified following the viral spread of a video showing Australian hospital staff describing how they mistreat Israeli patients. In response, Kirschner urged professional organizations to take action: âThe unions should inform their members that healthcare professionals need to remain neutral in the workplace and not display political symbols. They should make it clear that union members are prohibited from participating in political demonstrations at the workplace.â
Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre responded to the concerns, stating: âAll patients should feel safe when treated in our public health service. No one should experience discomfort or worry when receiving healthcare, and I expect everyone to be treated with dignity.â He emphasized that creating inclusive environments remains âa local responsibility of medical institutionsâ that authorities expect to be âtaken seriously.â The head of the Nurses Association has also acknowledged these concerns and promised to address them.
On Alpeleg, an Israeli-Norwegian resident of over three decades, places these concerns in a troubling historical context: âThe Norwegian health system has a problematic past and present which is undoubtedly tainted by political influence. Norway assisted the Nazis in deporting Jews to extermination camps, and today it is the only Western country that refuses to recognize the murderous organization Hamas as a terrorist organization. As a Jewish resident of Norway, I feel deep concern about the influence of politics on the ethics and professionalism of the healthcare system.â

David Badash at NCRM:
Just days before he will be sworn into office, President-elect Donald Trump is alleging the FBI has been engaging in âcorruption,â after learning the Bureau has shut down its âDEI Office,â officially the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The FBI has a lengthy, ongoing investigation into the January 6, 2021 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol. It also conducted an intensive investigation into Trumpâs removal and refusal to return classified documents, including top secret national security materials, and executed a lawful search warrant on Trumpâs Mar-a-Lago resort and residence to retrieve some of those documents. âWe demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now closing DEI OfficeâNever should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago. Why is it that theyâre closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!â Trump alleged, offering no proof or evidence, in a social media post Thursday evening. Trump pointed to a report from Mediaite: âFBI Shuttered DEI Office Ahead of Trumpâs Inauguration.â âWhile on the campaign trail, Trump stated he would end âwokenessâ and âleftist indoctrinationâ by dismantling diversity programs and imposing fines on colleges âup to the entire amount of their endowment,â the Mediaite report reads. âMore recently, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sent a letter to outgoing FBI Director Christopher Wray stating the agencyâs DEI practices âendanger Americans.â Blackburn made those comments shortly after the New Yearâs Day terror attack in New Orleans.â The Bureauâs Office of Diversity and Inclusion âwas created in 2012 to provide guidance and implement programs that promote a diverse and inclusive workplace that allows all employees to succeed and advance,â according to an archived version of its website. That page, which stresses, âDifferent backgrounds. One mission,â appears to no longer be accessible from the FBIâs website, and instead forwards to the main page.
Whiny manbaby Trump having a Caillou about the FBIâs Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

A lawyer and the government department she works with are being sued after she made gender-critical statements at work, including expressing the belief that only women menstruate.Â
Elspeth Duemmer Wrigley works at an armâs-length body affiliated to the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and is a chairwoman of a civil service network that represents staff with gender-critical views.Â
She is one of three key signatories of an explosive letter sent in October to the cabinet secretary warning the impartiality of the civil service was under threat because anyone with gender-critical views was âopenly and unlawfully bullied and harassedâ.Â
The confidential letter, seen by The Times, makes serious claims about a âsmall number of active gender ideologuesâ embedded in the civil service who brief against ministers and seek to alter official documents.
Duemmer Wrigley will appear at an employment tribunal next week accused of harassment for several comments and posts shared in the workplace. An employee of another body affiliated to Defra is suing the government department for allowing the network to exist and Duemmer Wrigley personally for her views.Â
These include a statement made during a seminar on female autism that âonly women menstruateâ and a link to My Body is Me!, a book that encourages young children to understand and accept their bodies. A post in which she celebrates âdiversity of beliefâ and explains that being gender-critical is a protected belief has also been penalised.
The Sex Equality and Equity Network (Seen) is an official civil service network with more than 700 members in 50 government departments who support the belief that biological sex is binary and immutable. Duemmer Wrigley is chairwoman of Defraâs Seen network and believes she is being targeted as a figurehead.
The claimant, who has not been named, has accused Defra bosses of creating a âintimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating and/or offensive environmentâ and is calling for a disbanding of the departmental SEEN network and, potentially, the cross-governmental network as well.Â
Duemmer Wrigley warns that if successful, the case would have a âchilling effectâ that could silence all gender criticism in the civil service.
â[It] would effectively preclude any public gender-critical discourse in the workplace,â she writes in a statement.Â
âIt has been brought at a time when employees with gender-critical beliefs in many organisations, both in the civil service and beyond, are already facing vexatious, chilling or bullying attacks. I believe if this case succeeds, these attacks are likely to escalate. I believe if this case succeeds there will be no place in the civil service for those with sex realist views.â
It comes months after the letter to Simon Case, the head of the civil service, called for âurgent action to ensure that civil service impartiality is upheld, and freedom of belief is respectedâ.
It warns that unchallenged bias in relation to gender is having a direct impact on policy, based on interviews and evidence from SEEN members across government.
The letter cites efforts from some staff to âremove contributions to government consultations that relate to sex instead of genderâ and âquietly briefing external organisations on how to circumnavigate ministerial directionâ.Â
It alleges there is an âactive obfuscation of factsâ among some trans activist civil servants to âprevent ministers seeing the impact of trans-inclusive policiesâ and evidence of internal policy being leaked to âpartisan organisationsâ.Â
Maya Forstater, executive director of Sex Matters, a human rights organisation that campaigns for clarity on sex in law, policy and language, said: âThis is a shocking case, which follows revelations by civil servant whistleblowers about a âculture of fearâ among gender-critical civil servants across Whitehall.Â
âIt is not reasonable to view the existence of a network of gender-critical colleagues as âharassmentâ.Â
âThe civil service needs to have a robust culture of integrity, objectivity and accountability, and treat all its employees fairly. Civil servants should not expect to be kept âsafeâ from encountering ideas or people they donât agree with.â
A government spokesman said: âWe are unable to comment on ongoing legal proceedings.â
