Mass produced clothes breed a certain distinct level of body dsymorphia. Oh this size doesn’t fit right? That’s weird- oh oh this fits bad on me oh this fits worse on me. It’s not your body. It’s not your body it’s not your body. I need people to understand how often clothes were handmade and tailored in the past and still are. You are buying a one size fits all even if it has different sizes!! Because your body is a size and shape they cannot account for! No one else has your body. It kills me how much Consumerism also breeds a distinct lack of understanding of our own bodies and what we look like because we imprint on what ‘fits’ at a chain store. even if you buy second hand, you can’t fully escape the new phenomenon because sizing is still awful!

The Problem with Brandy Melville

isn't just that they're one-size, and thereby body-shaming anyone who doesn't fit their clothing. It's the fact that they're literally racist.

You can Google the stuff that they've done to POC applying for jobs or just shopping there. Lots of stories of blatant discrimination.

But on top of that, and something I don't think enough people realize, is that they don't even cater to a general petite body-type. Their clothes are too big for your average small, skinny person. The body-type their clothes are actually made to fit is specifically the glamorized lanky California white girl, as seen in their advertisements and models.

Brandy Melville clothing was too big and too shaped for my Asian friends in high school to fit. I bet girls with more curve, like is more common with Black and Latina bodies, wouldn't fit either. But they fit me, a 5'10" white person with a thin hourglass frame, pretty dang well. If I was shorter, maybe around 5'7," it would all fit absolutely perfectly on my body-type. Only my body-type.

It's clear that the only bodies they want their clothing on are size 4 white girls. It's racist. Straight up. It is supporting white supremacy, and specifically white American supremacy (via the blended white person made in the U.S, as apposed to a specific European white person), in the beauty standards presented to teenagers and young-adults who might be interested in the Brandy Melville aesthetic.

Go buy knock-offs from Shein. Multiple sizing options, a quarter of the price, and hey, they're both made in Chinese sweatshops anyway.

While I understand the goal with gender-inclusive/'gender expansive'/unisex adult clothing patterns, I kinda hate them. Like. That's just now how human bodies are. One-size-fits all just doesn't!

A garment that is designed to fit well on a body without breasts will, by definition, fit like shit on me, no matter how boxy/oversized the style lines are! A garment designed to fit someone with by body (or the closest common approximation of my body, with like 3" less breast full bust circumference) will, by its very nature, fit very badly on someone flat-chested. See also, shit like shoulder width, and waist/hip raios, and I'm sure various other aspects.

Like, I get that there's a lot of baggage surrounding body shape and social expectations of gender! But you can't get around that baggage by pretending that various physical differences just don't exist!

If I want to dress more masc, the shape of my body does not change. The fit adjustments that I need to make don't change. I would in fact need to make additional tweaks and adjustments to get a traditionally masculine silhouette. And while it would be interesting and valuable to have guidelines on how to do that, unisex pattern designs move the whole process back in the opposite direction.

bUT I’m curious about matthias’s car, what car does he have? oh and who like driving more?

took me a bit to figure out the exact models but i've always had it in my head that matthias only has two cars, which is... maybe a little surprising because of his wealth? but he's not very materialistic so he just has the two. i could see him getting a third but it'd be for theo.

matthias is chauffeured around in a 2023 rolls-royce black badge ghost. he does drive it himself at times, but it's mainly for his driver. it looks like this:

matthias's personal car is a 1974 jaguar xke. this is the car he's most often seen in and he drives it everywhere. matthias likes taking in nature so he's big on just cruising with the top down and enjoying the sounds and breeze. he people watches, too. parks somewhere and just watches or closes his eyes and listens to it all. it looks like this:

also, replying to the last part of your question: theo doesn't have his license so matthias is the driver by default. i think even if theo had his license matthias would still be in the driver’s seat—especially because driving would stress theo out at the age he currently is in the story and theo is, uh... always intoxicated in some capacity. he gets his license later on in the story but doesn't buy a car (his parents financially abuse him so he. can't. and he also doesn't want matthias's money). he just likes knowing he could drive away if he needed to. escape routes, you know.

i do think theo would take over the wheel if it seems like matthias's insomnia is impairing him and he's starting to drop off or hallucinate, though (or matthias's chauffeur would take care of it... that's why matthias has one in the first place).

what i really appreciate about moonlight chicken (one of the many things) is that the pacing is so spot on for an eight episode series. the story needs to stretch across months, and we can only be shown so much because we’re working on such a tight runtime, but what we are shown gives us all the story we need.

episode 5 really felt like we were moving towards the 3/4 point, like we’re heading closer to the conclusion of the story, without sacrificing the way the show allows characters to mull in their feelings. every moment feels deliberate and intentional, nothing feels wasted - and whilst i’d love to stay with these characters for longer, if there were 7~ episodes left to air, you can feel where the story would maybe drag in a way it just can’t in the space of just 3.
