The Comprehensive Guide to Creating Your Express Entry Profile for Canadian Permanent Residency
As one of the most sought-after destinations for skilled professionals, Canada offers a robust immigration pathway through its Express Entry system. Designed to streamline the process for obtaining permanent residency, this points-based immigration system prioritizes candidates who can contribute to Canada’s diverse economy. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to create a successful Express Entry profile and optimize your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Understanding the Express Entry System
The Express Entry system manages applications for three key federal immigration programs:
1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
The FSWP is aimed at skilled workers with foreign work experience. It evaluates candidates based on factors such as education, work experience, and language proficiency.
2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Designed for skilled tradespeople, the FSTP requires candidates to have a job offer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian authority, in addition to relevant work experience.
3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The CEC caters to individuals with Canadian work experience. It is ideal for those who have gained professional experience in Canada and wish to transition to permanent residency.
Eligibility Requirements
Before creating your Express Entry profile, it's crucial to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for one of the programs listed above:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
Work Experience: Minimum of one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in a skilled occupation listed under the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
Language Proficiency: Must achieve a minimum score in an approved language test (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF).
Education: A minimum secondary school diploma, along with a valid Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign education.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Work Experience: At least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade.
Job Offer or Certification: A valid job offer from a Canadian employer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial authority.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Work Experience: At least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years.
Language Proficiency: Must meet the minimum language requirements according to the NOC classification.
Using the Come to Canada Tool
The Come to Canada Tool available on the IRCC website is a valuable resource that helps potential applicants assess their eligibility based on individual circumstances. This tool is essential for understanding your immigration options.
Step-by-Step Process for Creating Your Express Entry Profile
Step 1: Document Preparation
Before starting your Express Entry profile, gather all necessary documents:
Valid Passport: Ensure your passport is current and valid throughout the application process.
Language Test Results: High scores in language proficiency tests are critical for maximizing your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): Obtain an ECA to validate your foreign educational qualifications through designated organizations.
Work Experience Letters: Collect reference letters from previous employers outlining your job titles, responsibilities, and employment duration, ensuring alignment with the appropriate NOC codes.
Proof of Funds: If required, provide documentation showing sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependents upon your arrival in Canada.
Step 2: Creating Your Express Entry Profile
Register for an IRCC Account: Start by creating a secure account on the IRCC portal using GCKey or a trusted Sign-In Partner.
Complete the Profile: Accurately enter your personal, educational, and employment information, ensuring consistency with your supporting documents.
Indicate Interests in Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Express interest in specific PNPs, which can significantly enhance your chances of selection.
Step 3: Optimizing Your CRS Score
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) allocates points based on various criteria. To enhance your score:
Language Proficiency: Consider retaking language tests if necessary to achieve better scores.
Further Education: Pursue additional qualifications or certifications to earn extra points.
Job Offers: Securing a valid job offer from a Canadian employer can add considerable points to your profile.
Provincial Nomination: Receiving a nomination from a province adds 600 points to your CRS score, significantly increasing your likelihood of receiving an ITA.
Step 4: Maintaining Your Profile
Your Express Entry profile remains valid for 12 months. Regularly update it to reflect any changes in your circumstances, such as new qualifications or improvements in your language scores.
Step 5: Receiving an ITA
If selected, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), requiring you to submit a complete application for permanent residency within 60 days. Ensure all supporting documents accurately reflect the information provided in your profile.
Common Challenges in the Express Entry Process
1. Document Preparation
Compiling necessary documentation can be time-consuming. Begin this process early to avoid potential delays, especially when obtaining reference letters from employers.
2. Language Proficiency Issues
Initial test scores may fall short of the required thresholds. Consider investing in language training and retaking the tests for improved results.
3. Changes in Personal Circumstances
Life events (e.g., marriage, new job offers) can affect your application. Promptly update your profile to maintain accuracy.
4. Risks of Misrepresentation
Submitting false information can lead to severe consequences, including bans on future applications. Ensure all details are truthful and verifiable.
Conclusion
Creating an Express Entry profile is a vital step toward achieving Canadian permanent residency. By thoroughly evaluating your eligibility, meticulously preparing your documentation, and strategically optimizing your CRS score, you can significantly improve your chances of receiving an ITA. A structured approach will facilitate your success in navigating the complexities of the Canadian immigration process, ultimately leading to a rewarding new chapter in Canada.

How to get into the mind of a character? Honestly this can be for your OWN character or a fictional character. I'm wanting to write for characters- headcanons and fanfictions- and I'm so afraid I'll write them so uncanny to how they actually are.
How to get into the mind of a character?
To get into the mind of a character, you have to understand that character, believe in that character, and even "live" the character's life. But we all know each individual is different, and we cannot live different lives. A normal person who grew up in peacetime cannot fully understand the hardships of a warrior, and a doctor cannot know the thoughts of a mafia boss.
So, how can writers create believable characters? How can they possibly offer a believable soldier, cop, detective, alcoholic, or any given character type if they themselves haven't lived as them? How can they possibly offer a believable character in a situation that they've never been in?
Here are some tips you can use to get into the minds of characters:
Tip 1: Observe real-life people
To create well-rounded characters, observe real people around you. Pay attention to their behaviors, mannerisms, speech patterns, and thought processes. Take note of how they express emotions, handle conflicts, and make decisions. Drawing from real-life observations can add depth and authenticity to your characters. You can also search for novels and movies with different themes, study how characters with different pasts, biographies, occupations, and personalities act, behave, gesture, and speak. The best way is to prepare a small notebook and a pen so you can carry it with you wherever you go.

Tip 2: Create a detailed character profile
Develop a detailed character profile that includes information such as their age, background, beliefs, values, goals, and fears. Consider their relationships with other characters and how these dynamics influence their thoughts and actions. Delve into the character's past and explore significant events that have shaped them. Consider their upbringing, traumas, successes, and failures. These can provide you with a roadmap for understanding the character's mindset.

Tip 3: Use internal monologues and journaling
Imagine the character's internal thoughts and dialogues with themselves. Consider what they might be thinking in different situations, their hopes, dreams, and fears. (And why do they dream of that? Why are they afraid of that thing? What in the past made them afraid? Always asking questions.) Writing internal monologues or journal entries from the character's perspective can help you delve into their mindset and gain insight into their unique voice.

Tip 4: Consider their external influences
Characters are influenced by their environment, culture, and society. Reflect on how external factors such as family, friends, societal norms, or even the story's setting impact their thoughts and behaviors. This will help you portray their worldview more accurately.

Tip 5: Study the source material
If you're writing about an existing character from a book, TV show, or movie, immerse yourself in the source material. Pay attention to their dialogue, actions, and interactions with other characters. Take note of their personality traits, motivations, and backstory. This will help you develop a strong foundation for understanding the character. For example, recently I suddenly became interested in Nightwing (do you know him? Nightwing from the Batman series!), and I wanted to write a few short stories about him. So I found all the comics and movies that featured Nightwing and watched them one by one. I don't take notes because I have a pretty good memory (especially for characters I like), but I still recommend taking notes on special things to note.

Tip 6: Practice free writing
Set aside time for free writing exercises where you write from the character's point of view. Allow your thoughts to flow without judgment or editing. Just write, write, and write. You can reread and make corrections after you're done. Remember to gather your posts in one place; otherwise, you'll lose or forget them (like me!).

Getting into the mind of a character is an ongoing process that requires continuous exploration and refinement. The more you invest in understanding your character's thoughts, feelings, and motivations, the more compelling and authentic your writing will become.

I've created a side by side comparison of The Ballad of the Solonacean Conjunction in Sunless Skies and A Ballad of the Solonacean Conjunction in Lost Time in Fallen London. I've clipped only the relevant parts from Skies, as the full story is longer and worth a read.
I'll preface this by saying the Well of Wonders is my absolute favorite part of Skies and I haven't stopped screaming. Text and analysis below the cut!
(Everything is from "Dramatis Personae" in Skies or "Night in Elutheria [sic]" echo in FL except for the last paragraph on the left, which comes from "The Second Storyteller" in Skies. Sources linked at the end of the post.)
I've wondered for a long time what would happen if the brothers' roles were switched, and now we see this alternate timeline. The King Who Speaks is presented as "ambassadorial" and less hot-headed than the King Who Wars, but he's equally, if not more, ruthless as the Halved. Love this. Good for him.
Some of the small word changes are really sticking out to me. The change from the direct article to an indirect article. Not the story, but a version of the story. "False King" where the Halved is the King Who Wars vs. "True King" where the Halved is the King Who Speaks. This sure has Implications.
In real binaries, sometimes one star is a lot bigger than the other, and at least in this alternate timeline, it was the King Who Speaks who was older and stronger which adds such layers to the dynamics and the story. (How can one be older if they're twins? Oh well...ha ha ha. Well.)
Somehow I didn't pick up on the hint in the title of the book that this would be about the Halved, but the moment I read, "It is a play, dramatis personae obliterated, lines obscured," I Knew. It took me a while to even read past the first line of the main body of text because I was too excited.
The scream I scrumpt when I got a few paragraphs in and realized that this would be an AU where the brothers' roles were switched, and then the scream I scrumpt when the King Who Wars was thrown into his own well. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wish I could convey the journey my facial expressions went on. Truly an experience of every emotion known and some unknown to humankind in just one act!
This gives us an answer for an outstanding question in Skies. If the Halved was sundered by a power from Parabola, why did it decide to start killing stars? Here we get the line: "Cast out the stars that dared to shine on this act." It's about the misdirected blame! It's about the guilt and grief that get buried below armor! It's about the vengeance that will never end and will only find new targets! Yeah!
We're left with some new questions. Who are the Sacrifice, the Mourner, and the Expunged recruited to play these roles? We get a short bio of all the "actors" in Skies. Are we meant to interpret the performance in the library book as the principle characters playing themselves? There probably isn't a deep answer but I still have curiosity.
I remember the exact date and time I first played through the Well of Wonders because it had that big of an impact on my psyche. September 17, 2022, after sunset, in the old recliner. I'm not even pretending to be normal about this. Category 5 special interest event.
Stars hot and themes hot, my final message, goodbye.

Your chance meeting with Bada at her dance lesson was a memorable experience. You recall approaching the studio anxiously, the slight fragrance of sweat mingling with the excitement of learning from one of the finest. Bada's enthusiasm filled the room as she effortlessly lead the class through the difficult choreography.
With your exact techniques and contagious excitement, you drew Bada's attention as the class progressed. Her compliments at the end of the lesson seemed like a reinforcement of your commitment to dancing. You had no idea that was just the beginning.
After the class, while you were catching your breath, Bada approached with a warm smile. "Wow the famous Y/N from WayB ,You were amazing in there!. Are you new to my classes?"
You chuckled nervously, grateful for the compliment. "Thank you! And stop I'm not that famous , this was my first time here. I couldn't miss the chance to learn from the legendary Bada Lee."
Bada's laughter was music to your ears. "Legendary, huh? Flattery will get you everywhere! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope to see you in more classes."
From that day on, you became a regular at Bada's classes. Each session was an opportunity to learn from her and share a few laughs along the way. Your admiration for her talent grew, but so did your friendship.
Your interactions expanded beyond the dance studio as the weeks evolved into months. Coffee dates, casual lunches, and even spontaneous dance-offs became common. The relationship between you and Bada was undeniable, the shared passion for dance forming the foundation of your bond.
As your friendship with Bada grew, so did the moments of discovery. You found yourselves plunging deeper into each other's worlds amid dancing rehearsals and late-night hangouts.
Bada recounted stories about her experiences in the K-pop world with magnetic passion. Her eyes twinkled as she described the joy of choreographing for some of music's biggest stars. You listened closely, enthralled by her passion for dance and the industry insights she gave.
In turn, you opened up about your experiences with WayB, detailing the high-octane moments on stage as well as the creative process behind some of your most memorable performances. Bada was an attentive listener who asked probing questions about your craft.
You discovered shared interests and variations as your chats progressed beyond dance. Bada's taste in corny romantic flicks mirrored yours, and spontaneous movie nights became a favourite hobby. Every shared laugh and meaningful conversation enhanced your friendship, from arguing the best dancing styles to playfully criticising each other's dress choices.
There were also times when you both confided in one other about the difficulties you faced in the competitive dancing scene. In those moments, your mutual support and understanding established the cornerstone of your new partnership.
There were glimpses of something more in the midst of the growing friendship. The lingering looks, the unintentional touches that sent sparks flying, and the butterflies in your stomach when you were together—it was an emotional dance that neither of you could resist.
It was during a spontaneous outing to a bustling street food market that the unspoken tension between you finally surfaced. Amidst the aroma of sizzling delicacies and the ambient chatter, Bada turned to you with a thoughtful expression.
"You know, spending time with you has been incredible. I feel like I've known you for much longer than we actually have. There's this connection between us that's hard to ignore."
You nodded, feeling the same way but also unsure of where to take the conversation. "I feel it too, Bada. It's like we just... click."
The air between you held a silent question, a mutual acknowledgment of the unspoken feelings that lingered beneath the surface. It was a defining moment—a crossroads where friendship and something deeper converged.
With a soft smile, Bada reached out, gently taking your hand. "How about we explore this further? Take things one step at a time and see where this journey leads us?"
Your heart skipped a beat at her words, relief flooding in as the unspoken tension dissipated. "I'd love that, Bada. Let's see where this dance takes us."
That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in your relationship. From there, the transition from friends to partners was a natural progression, solidifying the beautiful connection you shared.
Amidst the bustling street food market, the conversation lingered in the air, a silent understanding hanging between you and Bada. The playful banter and shared laughter seemed to create a cocoon around the two of you, shielding you from the outside world.
As the evening sun cast a warm glow, Bada leaned in, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "You know, there's one thing we haven't tried yet."
Your heart raced, anticipation mingling with a hint of nervousness. "And what might that be?"
With a playful grin, Bada teased, "A proper goodbye for the night, perhaps?"
A shared chuckle punctuated the moment, the air thick with unspoken anticipation. Without a word, you leaned in, your lips meeting in a gentle, playful kiss. It was a fleeting moment, but one that spoke volumes—filled with the promise of something beautiful blooming between you.
Pulling away, both of you wore matching sheepish grins, a hint of color dusting your cheeks. "Well, that was unexpected," you chuckled.
Bada, her laughter infectious, replied, "I blame the romantic atmosphere of the street market. It's making me do crazy things!"
The shared laughter dissolved any remaining tension, the ease of the moment reinforcing the comfort you found in each other's company. With a knowing glance and a playful wink, you both continued your stroll through the market, the echoes of your laughter mingling with the vibrant ambiance.
That spontaneous kiss became a cherished memory—a moment that sealed the unspoken feelings and added a touch of whimsy to your budding relationship. From that day forward, the warmth of that shared kiss lingered as a silent promise of the affection and connection between you and Bada.

With each elegant turn and intricate formation, the audience, entranced by the exhibition of unity and delicacy, shouted louder. Whispers and gasps flooded the room as your and Bada's chemistry transcended the dance floor, creating a lasting mark on everyone in attendance.
As the music reached a climax, you and Bada finished the dance with a magnificent final posture, the audience's cheers echoing throughout the venue. The shared moment between you two lingered in the air, a silent testament to the deeper connection that existed between you.
The emcee, beaming with enthusiasm, approached the center stage amidst the thunderous applause. "Ladies and gentlemen, let's give it up for Y/N Y/LN and Bada Lee! What an incredible performance! The chemistry between these two dancers is simply undeniable."
Fans, who had been speculating about the nature of your relationship, couldn't help but notice the palpable connection between you and Bada. The synergy that had unfolded before their eyes left an impression that was impossible to ignore, sparking a renewed wave of curiosity and excitement among the audience.
The emcee, sensing the electric atmosphere, approached with the mic. "A spectacular showdown! Y/N, Bada, any words for our audience?"
You stepped forward, the smile on your face concealing the deeper sentiment. "Thank you all for the love and support. It's been an incredible experience sharing the stage with such amazing talent."
Bada, her eyes gleaming with excitement, added, "Absolutely! The energy here is electrifying. Thank you for being a part of this journey!"
The crowd cheered, unaware of the hidden dynamics at play between you and Bada. As you left the stage, the playful banter and shared glances remained concealed, adding a layer of intrigue to the rumors that continued to circulate within the dance community.

In the hushed aftermath of the concert, the backstage area embraced a serene ambiance. You and Bada found a secluded spot away from the bustling crowd, the shared moments on stage still vivid in your minds.
Bada's smile was soft, filled with the remnants of the exhilaration from the performance. "That dance was something else, wasn't it?"
You nodded, a smile mirroring hers. "Absolutely. The synergy between us was incredible."
A comfortable silence settled between you, the weight of the unspoken emotions adding a layer of depth to the moment.
The shared glance between you held a silent agreement, the bond you shared extending beyond the confines of words. In that quiet space, amidst the fading echoes of the concert, a mutual understanding lingered between you and Bada.
As the quiet lingered, the intimacy of the moment heightened. Bada's gaze softened, her eyes searching yours for a shared truth. Without a word, a gentle yet purposeful movement drew her closer, and in that silent invitation, you felt a warmth envelop both of you.
The world around seemed to fade as Bada's lips met yours in a tender, sweet kiss. It was a moment that felt suspended in time, a silent celebration of the bond that had quietly grown between you.
When the kiss gently parted, the serenity of the moment remained, a shared intimacy that transcended the public eye. Bada's eyes met yours once more, a depth of emotion conveyed in that silent exchange.
"Thank you," Bada whispered softly, her voice carrying a weight of gratitude and affection.
You smiled, a warmth spreading through you. "For what?"
"For being here. For understanding. For this moment," Bada replied, her eyes shining with sincerity.
In the quiet embrace of the backstage, amidst the remnants of the concert, you and Bada stood, hand in hand, the unspoken intimacy of the night weaving a tapestry of shared memories.
It was a moment that etched itself into the story of your relationship, a moment that celebrated the beauty of dance, friendship, and the love that had quietly blossomed within the rhythm of the music and the unspoken language of your movements.

Bestiaryposting Results: Shonweak
This is an unusual one in terms of whether people have preconceptions on what it looks like. On one hand, the medieval interpretation of this animal is widespread and generally known, at least in comparison to other bestiary material -- shows up in modern fantasy and everything -- so it's possible that people familiar with medieval stuff recognized it on sight and had to work against those preconceptions. On the other hand, the medieval interpretation is pretty much completely divorced from reality, so anyone coming at it from a background of Actually Knowing Animals rather than one of Knowing Medieval Nonsense is likely going to be baffled.
Anyway, as usual, if you're confused by what I'm talking about, please refer to https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. And you can find the entry that artists are working from here:
Art below the cut, roughly chronological, &c.

@silverhart-makes-art (link here) says that they wanted to draw a Weird Little Creature, and... mission accomplished, that creature sure can Weird and Little. I kind of love it; it's got that vibe that makes something simultaneously cute and kind of unsettling. The linked post goes into some detail about design decisions and the real-world animals they used for inspiration. Something I think is particularly clever is how they not only incorporated the carapace from the beetle they were inspired by, but they also made the profile of the head fit with that, so that it also looks kind of beetle-like despite being obviously mammalian.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) also had Beetle Thoughts and decided to just run with them, creating an impressively-realistic-looking drawing of a beetle. (I think I'm just a sucker for black-and-white naturalist-style art, because lately I keep looking at CheapSweets's work and going "ooh, look at the stippling and everything". Plus I'm perennially impressed that they do this with a fountain pen.) There's some detailed discussion in the linked post about what specific beetles this design takes inspiration from, as well as how they envision this animal functioning in general, and that's really interesting, so I recommend checking it out. (Did you know there was a beetle known as the "diabolical ironclad beetle"? Delightful.) Additionally, they note that we should imagine bright warning colors, but they didn't have time to add them. Also, thank you CheapSweets for providing alt text.

@sweetlyfez (link to post here) also notes that this critter would have bright warning colors if she'd had time to color it. Apparently this design is inspired by poison-type Pokemon, which I can definitely see: that's a credible Pokemon design. It's all gloopy for putting out fires. I find it interesting that there's a degree of consensus on this entry being interpreted in this way -- replies on the original post expressed that That Is A Pokemon, and seemingly SweetlyFez agrees. I like the side-eye it's giving, too. (And thank you for including alt text.)

@pomrania (link to post here) was the one to label this a Pokemon in the replies, and we can see that they've run with that a bit, as this is also a credible Pokemon design. It's a little bit cat, a little bit dragon, and a little bit liquid so it can put out fire. I like that it looks so pleased with itself while causing problems.

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has decided that the Shonweak is an armadillo. This illustration shows some very nice Stylized Trees, I must say, and I particularly like the visual effect showing that the Shonweaks are poisoning the one on the left. (Coolest-Capybara also makes note of the Pokemon thing.) For an explanation of why they are armadillos, please see the linked post.
@strixcattus (link to post here) has drawn a very charming little creature. I love the puffed-up cheeks & throat sac, and the effect that has on its facial expression. If you check out the linked post for a proper description of this beast, you'll find it's quite interesting -- I particularly like the idea that it spits poison by filling its throat sac with water and then allowing its natural poison to seep into that water. I think that's pretty clever.
Now, to the Aberdeen Bestiary, where the illustrator has done a Scene that takes up most of the page:
That's a heck of a thing, right? I really like it, to be honest. We've got the cool Stylized Tree with critters wrapping around the branches, we've got the ones in the fire doing kind of a flame-like pose, and of course we have a dead guy at the bottom. The last of these just strikes me as funny for some reason.
Anyway, as I think multiple people guessed, this is the salamander.
No, the illustrator had apparently never seen one, so they've drawn snakes instead, probably because of the association with poison.
Anyway, I was surprised to learn (just now actually) that salamanders really are quite poisonous. I have no idea whether they can poison food and water in the way that the author describes -- that seems a bit extreme -- but I don't think I know enough to rule it out.
The fire thing... well, that's definitely not the case. I'm not really sure where that came from. I've heard the explanation that people in the past would occasionally see salamanders crawling out of fires, and thus form the idea that they were fireproof, unaware of the fact that the salamanders were just hiding in their firewood and are fleeing the fire as a result of being Definitely Not Fireproof. I don't know how credible that is, though.
This fire association may have been amplified by... well, look at this:

That's Salamandra salamandra, aka the fire salamander. It's pretty common and widespread in Europe, and is also among the largest salamanders on the continent, so it's reasonable to think this is the one that pre-modern Europeans would have in mind. And you know, that coloring definitely gives the impression of "this is a Fire Guy". If one were to see this salamander crawling out of a fire (worth noting that the Wikipedia article does say they like to hide under fallen wood, so maybe that idea tracks), and knew nothing about zoology, you could see how they might think "yes, that looks like something that was supposed to be in there."

Words cannot express how much I fucking hate this article, or rather the people who are being profiled in it. It’s so disappointing to see Grant Achatz and these other chefs outsource their creativity to a plagiarism machine and still expect their diners to pony up the big bucks for the privilege of eating at their restaurants. It’s bad enough when influencers talk about using ChatGPT to get recipes to make for themselves or use it as a way to make cringey cooking content; this feels so antithetical to the concept of fine dining, especially when it’s led by a celebrated chef.
Relatedly, I’ve been working on a larger piece about genAI and how much I fucking hate it and I don’t use any of it to write my blog, and then this and a number of other articles have come out about how it’s being used for really bad reasons, and so now I feel like I have to go back to the drawing board and rewrite it from scratch.
More below the jump:
This all started when I was going through some recent link-backs in my blog’s dashboard and noticed that they were coming from blogs that were clearly generated by AI. Some were upfront about it, like this blog that cited my post on Melissa Clark’s pressure-cooker sausages and lentils:

I mean, look at this image of sausages and lentils! This is some serious uncanny valley shit.

And here’s a blog that tried to link to my post musing on Mimi Thorisson’s seared scallops with cauliflower puree and they didn’t even replace the dummy text in the About page, and yes, those scallops also look incredibly cursed.
The only bit of amusement I’ve gotten from any of this nonsense was looking at the copy for each of these blog entries. Those suckers are long and dry and completely devoid of personality. For all of the people whining about having to scroll past “12 page essays about a grandma” to get to a recipe, somehow this is more acceptable? I call bullshit on all of this.

This week’s BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, features a new participant: Turkey. A Kremlin official leaked last month that Ankara had applied to join the grouping, following repeated expressions of interest over the years. A spokesperson for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) then conceded that “a process is underway.”
The BRICS grouping undertook a major expansion recently, adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in January, with Saudia Arabia still mulling whether to join. The acronym stands for the group’s original members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Still, Turkey’s BRICS application is a watershed moment in geopolitics. If Turkey joins BRICS as a full member or partner state, it would become the first NATO member and longtime candidate for European Union membership to have an active role in an entity seen by some analysts as a challenger to Western predominance.
Turkey’s diplomatic demarche is yet another sign that the global south is rising in world affairs, and it underscores the growth of active nonalignment as an ideology. But it is not a major break in Turkish foreign policy: Ankara’s BRICS application is an extension of its international balancing act, which aims to diversify alliances while maintaining ties with the West.
During two decades in office, Erdogan has promoted a non-Western-centric vision of the world and sought greater global autonomy due to frustration with the EU and the United States. For its part, BRICS is on a roll in terms of both membership and growing global clout. In addition to Turkey, countries such as Malaysia and Thailand have also applied for entry and sent envoys to this year’s summit.
Cooperation among BRICS members in energy, trade, and infrastructure development is growing at a fast clip. As a share of global trade, intra-BRICS trade in goods more than doubled from 2002 to 2022, reaching 40 percent. In 2015, the group created the Shanghai-based New Development Bank with $50 billion in capital. The bank, headed by former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, has since lent $33 billion for 96 projects.
BRICS now aims to create an alternative payment system to SWIFT, which it perceives as a Western-dominated international banking system. The project has taken on greater importance after Western countries disconnected Russia from SWIFT following the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
BRICS would benefit from Turkey’s accession. From a geopolitical standpoint, Turkey’s membership would enhance the group’s stature as a proponent of nonalignment, as opposed to a bloc with an anti-Western agenda—though it would certainly increase Western suspicions about Turkey. At present, the group is torn. China and Russia would like to build it into an anti-Western entity, while Brazil, India, and South Africa would prefer it to take a stance closer to nonalignment. Turkey’s presence is likely to strengthen the second view. The same goes for most of the new members, except for Iran, which is likely to hew close to China and Russia.
Joining BRICS would also put Turkey, a NATO member, in a privileged position: Having a foot in both camps increases Ankara’s foreign-policy leverage. “Being involved in these structures does not mean abandoning NATO,” Erdogan told journalists at the United Nations General Assembly in September. “We do not think that this alliance and cooperation are an alternative to one another.”
Despite Erdogan’s high profile in global affairs, Turkey’s domestic agenda has become increasingly challenging for the president. In March, the AKP lost ground in municipal elections, while economic growth has slowed and inflation runs rampant. But domestic constraints have not limited Turkey’s quest for influence across Eurasia; if anything, these international endeavors offer a welcome distraction.
Erdogan’s foreign policy is built on a complex blend of Turkey’s Ottoman legacy, nationalist aspirations, and a sense that the West’s best days are behind it. He seeks a more multipolar world, where Turkey can act independently of Western hegemony and search for strategic options beyond the West, even if this means partnering with historical enemies, such as Russia, or with countries that have pursued draconian policies against Muslim minorities, such as China.
Erdogan has sought to expand Turkey’s strategic wiggle room through diplomacy. He has signed energy deals with Russia, allowing the Russian state-owned utility Rosatom to build, own, and operate Turkey’s first nuclear power plant; mediated in armed conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war; and rallied support against Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Turkey’s BRICS application is no different. It is not about breaking ties with the West but rather recalibrating them in favor of broader and more diversified alliances that are important to Turkey’s long-term national interests—particularly as Ankara’s prospects for EU membership grow dim and strategic ties with the United States weaken.
Turkey’s decades-long bid for EU membership has been marked by frustration. As Ankara has pushed for accession, EU responses have been lukewarm at best, especially after French and German opposition in the late 2000s. With a population of 87 million people, Turkey would be the largest country in the EU and the only Muslim-majority member. Democratic backsliding after the 2013 Gezi Park protests and the 2016 coup attempt have not helped its case. Today, while Turkey remains a candidate officially, its EU accession talks have stalled.
EU ambivalence over Turkish membership stems from concerns over Turkey’s human rights record and growing authoritarianism under Erdogan’s leadership. There are also disputes over Cyprus and maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean. The 2023 European Commission report on Turkey further strained relations; the report condemned Ankara’s democratic erosion and suggested that it is nowhere close to reaching full membership.
Turkey’s links with the United States have not fared any better. A major point of contention was Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system, which led to its removal from the F-35 fighter jet program. In response, Turkey opted for F-16s, taking advantage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to upgrade its defense industry. The conflict also increased Turkey’s leverage over NATO, particularly as it stonewalled Sweden’s bid for membership.
Amid the war in Gaza, Erdogan’s alignment with the Palestinian cause and vocal criticism of Western support for Israel have deepened rifts between Ankara and Washington. In the past, the Turkish president also blamed the Obama administration for its support for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces during the Syrian civil war, an issue that has lingered.
All the same, Turkey has proved that it is still indispensable to the West: It has acted as a key mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war, underscoring its delicate balancing act between NATO commitments and partnership with Moscow. In this role, Turkey has achieved impressive results—such as facilitating the largest prisoner swap since the Cold War.
For Erdogan, these developments have confirmed Turkey’s need to pursue a form of nonalignment and to shift its focus toward the global south and non-Western entities. Turkey’s pivot has led it to engagements across the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, where Ankara has expanded its networks and business. In this context, BRICS offers Turkey a unique opportunity to join a rising bloc that represents a significant portion of the global south as well as Russia and China—key actors in Eurasia.
In a world marked by great-power rivalry and competing grand narratives, Turkey stands to regain its role as a bridge between the West, global south, and Eurasian powers. The country’s unique position draws on its geographical location and imperial history. By applying to join the BRICS—an informal yet high-profile group—Turkey is signaling to the West that it should not be taken for granted.

IRCC Approves Manitoba’s request to extend work permits for some PNP candidates
Marc Miller Canada’s Immigration Minister has approved a request by the government of Manitoba to extend temporary resident status for some nominees identified in the province's Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Updates ,All the nominees have work permits that will be set to expire in 2024 and are those who are mainly Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders. Those individuals currently have applications in the pool for the Manitoba Skilled Worker Program, an immigration pathway aimed at filling key job vacancies within the province.
temporary workers means that 6,700 may continue the process while working ,and the province continues to process their PNP application. The province expects that “eligible foreign nationals will receive an official nomination from Manitoba and eventually become permanent residents” within two years.
the Immigration, refugee & citizenship Canada. guidlines says it is open to working with other Canadian provinces & territories to help in more temporary residents into permanent residents to address national labour market needs.
More information may be available following a meeting of the Federation of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) on May 10.
Manitoba’s PNP
The province introduced the program in 1998, Manitoba became the first province in Canada to start a program called the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This program was created to bring in new people who might usually move to big cities like Toronto or Vancouver. Manitoba wanted to attract them to come and live in their province instead.
The idea of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) worked really well in Manitoba. It helped share the good things that come from immigration across the province. After seeing this success, all other provinces and territories in Canada, except for Quebec & Nunavut, decided to do the same thing. They wanted to bring in more people to help their communities grow too.
Data also shows that 10,000 people in Manitoba transitioned from worker status to permanent residents in 2023.
In January & March this year, the province issued 1,560 Expressions of Interest to Skilled Worker candidates leading to 1,478 approvals.
IRCC data shows that in 2022, 20% of all permanent resident admissions came through the PNP. Additionally, the Immigration Levels Plan (Canada’s admissions targets for permanent residents each year) plans to welcome 110,000 new permanent residents by the end of 2024, and 120,000 per year in both 2025 and 2026.
Changes to temporary resident levels
This is unique in Canada’s immigration space & aligns with a previously announced priority for the year and in years to come. On March 21st this year, Minister Miller announced an intention to pursue more domestic draws to help transition temporary residents to permanent residents.
In another way, IRCC plans to work with newcomers already in Canada to help them become permanent residents, rather than increasing the previously uncapped number of temporary residents who arrive in Canada each year. In 2023 Canada had a temporary resident population exceeding 2.5 million people, or 6.2% of the total population.
In 2023, 157,000 people transitioned from temporary residents to permanent residents.

Joseph Gedeon at The Guardian:
The United States has ordered consular offices to significantly expand their screening processes for student visa applicants, including through comprehensive social media investigations, to exclude people they deem to support terrorism. Coming after several high-profile visa revocations and targeted arrests over pro-Palestinian campus activism, a state department cable from 25 March, obtained by the Guardian, describes a new standard for visa denials based on a broad definition of what constitutes support for “terrorist activity”. The directive states that “evidence that an applicant advocates for terrorist activity, or otherwise demonstrates a degree of public approval or public advocacy for terrorist activity or a terrorist organization” can be grounds for visa rejection. It specifically targets new and renewing F, M and J student visa applications, providing explicit instructions for consular officers to conduct mandatory social media reviews digging into applicants’ lives online. Officers are directed to examine the social media of all students applying to a visa for evidence of activities the administration defines as a threat to national security or terrorism. The directive mandates that fraud prevention units, which receive flagged applications, take screenshots of “potentially derogatory” social media content, creating a permanent digital record that can be used to deny entry. Those officers are instructed to preserve screenshots “to the extent it is relevant to a visa ineligibility” and upload them to the applicant’s case record – even if the posts are later altered or deleted. “Evidence that an applicant advocates for terrorist activity or otherwise demonstrates a degree of public approval or public advocacy for terrorist activity or a terrorist organization may be indicative of ineligibility,” reads the memo, sent by the secretary of state, Marco Rubio. “This may be evident in conduct that bears a hostile attitude towards US citizens or US culture, including government institutions or founding principles.” The memo says the vetting process should extend to students in the US as of 7 October 2023 whose visas are up for renewal, noting the day that Hamas led an attack on Israel, prompting Israel’s subsequent barrage of airstrikes and ground invasion that have amounted to more than 50,000 people reported killed. In recent weeks, the government has revoked the visas of a number of students it claims have expressed support for Hamas. The new procedures are certain to prompt concerns that social media posts supportive of the Palestinians, that contain critical commentary on US foreign policy, or that indicate attendance at a campus protest could trigger a comprehensive visa review.
This is just another attempt to shut down speech critical of the Orange Tyrant, such as pro-Palestinian activism.

The Pentagon Wants to Use AI to Create Deepfake Internet Users
The Department of Defense wants technology so it can fabricate online personas that are indistinguishable from real people.
The United States’ secretive Special Operations Command is looking for companies to help create deepfake internet users so convincing that neither humans nor computers will be able to detect they are fake, according to a procurement document reviewed by The Intercept. The plan, mentioned in a new 76-page wish list by the Department of Defense’s Joint Special Operations Command, or JSOC, outlines advanced technologies desired for country’s most elite, clandestine military efforts. “Special Operations Forces (SOF) are interested in technologies that can generate convincing online personas for use on social media platforms, social networking sites, and other online content,” the entry reads. The document specifies that JSOC wants the ability to create online user profiles that “appear to be a unique individual that is recognizable as human but does not exist in the real world,” with each featuring “multiple expressions” and “Government Identification quality photos.”
[...]
The Pentagon has already been caught using phony social media users to further its interests in recent years. In 2022, Meta and Twitter removed a propaganda network using faked accounts operated by U.S. Central Command, including some with profile pictures generated with methods similar to those outlined by JSOC. A 2024 Reuters investigation revealed a Special Operations Command campaign using fake social media users aimed at undermining foreign confidence in China’s Covid vaccine.
[...]
This more detailed procurement listing shows that the United States pursues the exact same technologies and techniques it condemns in the hands of geopolitical foes. National security officials have long described the state-backed use of deepfakes as an urgent threat — that is, if they are being done by another country.
[...]
The offensive use of this technology by the U.S. would, naturally, spur its proliferation and normalize it as a tool for all governments. “What’s notable about this technology is that it is purely of a deceptive nature,” said Heidy Khlaaf, chief AI scientist at the AI Now Institute. “There are no legitimate use cases besides deception, and it is concerning to see the U.S. military lean into a use of a technology they have themselves warned against. This will only embolden other militaries or adversaries to do the same, leading to a society where it is increasingly difficult to ascertain truth from fiction and muddling the geopolitical sphere.”

Wisdom Kaye is a popular model, video creator, and fashion influencer well-known for his unique style and presence on social media. In January 2020, he created his TikTok, @wisdm8, to express his love and creativity for fashion, all while studying electrical engineering in college. Amid the pandemic, Wisdom Kaye was able to achieve social media fame with his rendition of the ‘Vogue Challenge’ and managed to accumulate 2 million followers within 6 months (Allaire, 2020). However, Wisdom Kaye initially tried gaining a fan base through Twitter. It was on that platform that he decided to instead focus primarily on video content, which brought him to TikTok and began his new career, eventually becoming signed with IMG. He received opportunities, working with brands including Gucci, Dior, and Coach, serving as a guest judge on Project Runway, and received back-to-back Streamy Awards (Forbes, 2023).

“The fashion community is not the biggest on TikTok. Dancing and comedy make up the majority of the platform, and within the fashion community, there are not that many male fashion creators. What sets my page apart, and what has contributed to my growth, is that I show the limitlessness of fashion.” - Wisdom Kaye, (Allaire, 2020).
As of now, Wisdom Kaye has 9.4 million followers on TikTok and has been labelled, “Best Dressed Guy on TikTok,” by Vogue. At the age of 21, Forbes included Kaye in the ‘30 Under 30: Art & Style’ for 2023. In just four years, Wisdom Kaye was able to redirect his aspirations in life by expressing his creativity and using social media to its fullest potential.
When deconstructing Kaye’s rise to fame, the democratization of the web has played a crucial role. It has made it easier for individuals like Wisdom Kaye to share their content with a global audience. Social media platforms have lowered barriers to entry, allowing anyone with an internet connection to create and distribute content. The accessibility and visibility of modern-day technology provide a level playing field for content creators, regardless of who they are and where they come from. Kaye showed his distinctive fashion sense without traditional gatekeepers like fashion magazines or modelling agencies.
Social media can also foster communities of people who share interests in fashion. Wisdom Kaye was able to connect with fellow fashion enthusiasts, engage with his audience, and build a loyal fanbase. The direct interaction and feedback from his followers fuel the growing popularity of his platforms.
“Truth be told, I have so many ideas that I have yet to do, because my fans are always giving me new ones! I have a note sheet on my phone littered with ideas that I’ve come up with that I am yet to start on, because they always give such good ideas. But of course, as a creator by heart, I also do my own thing.” - Wisdom Kaye, (Allaire, 2020).

Canada PR Points System
Canada's Permanent Residency (PR) system is renowned for its welcoming approach to skilled immigrants from around the world. Central to this system is the allocation of PR points, which play a crucial role in determining an applicant's eligibility for immigration to Canada. Understanding the Canada PR points table and how points are calculated is essential for prospective immigrants seeking to make Canada their new home. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to navigating the Canada PR points system, providing insights into its intricacies and offering strategies for improving one's chances of success.

Understanding the Canada PR Points Table
At the heart of the Canadian PR system lies the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), a points-based system used to evaluate candidates in the Express Entry pool. The Canada PR points table assigns points to candidates based on various factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. Each factor carries a specific weightage, and candidates must meet minimum point requirements to be eligible for Canadian PR.
Factors Considered in the Points Calculation
The allocation of PR points is based on several key factors that reflect a candidate's ability to contribute to the Canadian economy and society. Age, education, and work experience are crucial factors, with younger applicants and those with higher levels of education and extensive work experience earning more points. Language proficiency, particularly in English and French, is also a significant determinant of PR points, as is adaptability, which assesses a candidate's ability to integrate into Canadian society.
Breakdown of Points Allocation
Let's delve into the breakdown of points allocation in the Canada PR points table. For instance, candidates can earn a maximum of 100 points for age, with younger applicants receiving the highest scores. Education can contribute up to 150 points, with additional points awarded for Canadian educational credentials. Work experience is valued at a maximum of 80 points, while language proficiency can earn candidates up to 136 points. Adaptability factors such as previous study or work experience in Canada or having a Canadian job offer can also boost a candidate's score.
How many points do I need for Canada PR?
The minimum number of points required for Canada PR varies depending on factors such as the specific immigration program and the current Express Entry draw. Generally, candidates need to score above a certain threshold, typically around 470 points or higher, to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian PR. However, meeting the minimum point requirement does not guarantee an ITA, as the cutoff score is determined by the number of candidates in the Express Entry pool and the needs of the Canadian labor market.
Impact of Express Entry on PR Points
The Express Entry system has revolutionized Canada immigration process, streamlining the application process and making it more accessible to skilled immigrants. Under
Express Entry, candidates create an online profile detailing their qualifications, work experience, language proficiency, and other relevant information. The CRS then ranks candidates based on their PR points, with the highest-ranked candidates receiving Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Canadian PR. By understanding how Express Entry impacts PR points, candidates can strategically position themselves to improve their chances of receiving an ITA.
Strategies to Improve Your PR Points
For candidates looking to enhance their PR points and increase their eligibility for Canadian PR, there are several strategies to consider. Investing in language training to improve language proficiency, gaining additional work experience in a high-demand occupation, obtaining educational credentials assessments for foreign degrees, and securing a valid job offer from a Canadian employer are all effective ways to boost PR points. Additionally, creating a compelling Express Entry profile that highlights one's qualifications and achievements can make a significant difference in attracting the attention of Canadian immigration authorities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, navigating the Canada PR points system requires a thorough understanding of the factors considered in the points calculation, the breakdown of points allocation, and the impact of the Express Entry system. By leveraging strategies to improve PR points, candidates can enhance their eligibility for Canadian PR and embark on a new chapter in one of the most welcoming and diverse countries in the world. With careful planning and preparation, the dream of immigrating to Canada can become a reality for skilled individuals seeking new opportunities and a brighter future.
