The Antidote to Overthinking Creative Projects

Lost in Overthinking? Here’s a Reliable Technique to Help You Escape and Create!

For portions of most creative people’s lives, there have been times of overthinking-paralysis. Seemingly useful questions arise like:

Is this ME?

Is this too me? Is showing others who I really am too much?

Is this too different from my usual style?

Do I even have a style?

All of these questions, and more, are what distract creative people and just doing it. The mind offers the creative person a side quest, a maze in which to hunt for evidence that they are worthy. And, of course, this is a much less vulnerable act than the act of actually making something. This maze of overthinking is actually a coping mechanism, protecting all creatives from the same primal instinct: fear. Fear is a paralysing state to be in, no matter what you want to do. If it emerges, blocking the doorway to your creative flow, instead of trying to find your way around the maze of identity and aesthetics, try this instead:

EFT Tapping to Get Out of the Maze of Self-Doubt

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a simple but powerful tool that involves tapping on specific acupressure points while saying certain phrases to shift emotional states.

(To see the EFT Tapping points being used here is a quick video)

First, tap gently on a part of your body where you feel this fear or stuck energy - Below your collarbone, the side of your hand, your solar plexus or wherever feels natural - and repeat these words:

"I can see this maze. It wants me to question who I am And what I am doing. But I have done this a lot... and never got the answers that I was seeking. So I am open to trying something new now. Even though I have felt stuck in this maze, I know I am not alone. Many creatives before me have felt this way, And they found a way through. So maybe… I can too."

This round is to get you out of your head and into your body, where action can happen. As you tap, notice any feelings or shifts in your energy. If you feel the stuck energy changing, follow it by tapping on that spot, or move to another area where you feel tension or discomfort.

Once you feel yourself grounding in your body again, try this next round:

"Even though I am aware of the maze, I accept that it is there. And even though the maze is there, I don’t have to do anything about it.

What if I could let the maze be there, And not be tempted to get in and search for my worth?

What if the fact that I have breath Proves that I am worthy enough... To let my ideas flow, To let myself create." Take a few deep breaths and reflect on how you feel after tapping, feel free to write down any emotions that arise and any shifts in energy that you feel. If you still feel stuck you can repeat this sequence until you feel a shift in energy and perspective, you can also return to it as often as you need for a perspective-shift.

Let Ideas Move Through You

Many great creatives, like Liz Gilbert, believe that ideas are entities outside of ourselves. They choose us as vessels to be born through. If we spend too much time overthinking, the idea can get bored waiting and move on to the next creative.

Ideas don’t ask for permission to exist - that’s a human thing, unfortunately.

This shift in perspective can feel hard to adjust to, so self-compassion is important. We will all find ourselves inside the maze of overthinking and self-doubt now and again - what matters is knowing that it isn’t real.

And having the tools to get out of our heads and come back to tangible reality—where it is, in fact, safe to create.

beatBread Expands Funding Opportunities for Songwriters with New Songwriting Advance Division

Utah-based music funding platform beatBread is expanding its reach to songwriters with the launch of its new Songwriting Advance Division. This division will provide advances of up to $3 million to songwriters against the publishing rights on their catalog or catalog plus future songs.

This initiative is a significant step forward for beatBread, which has traditionally focused on providing funding to artists and independent labels. The company's expansion into the songwriting space is a response to the growing demand for financial support among songwriters, who are often overlooked by traditional music lenders.

“The Custodian of Imagination: Sustaining Architecture Beyond the Dream”

The role of the archivist in Rem Koolhaas’s Exodus, or the Voluntary Prisoners of Architecture serves as a striking metaphor for the often-overlooked custodianship of architectural ideas. In the walled strip of Koolhaas’s speculative project, the archivist preserves the memory and purpose of the collective, ensuring that the ideological framework remains intact even as it demands personal sacrifice. This figure is emblematic of a deeper tension in architecture—between individual ambition and the necessity of sustaining a shared vision.

As a document controller at ACME, with an architectural education rooted in the traditions of the Architectural Association at Bedford Square, I find my own role mirrors that of Koolhaas’s archivist. My work, though far from the act of design itself, supports the mantle of architectural imagination. It is a responsibility that often requires setting aside personal dreams of shaping spaces directly to ensure the broader vision of the practice thrives. This custodianship is not a diminishment of creativity but its safeguard, an acknowledgment that architecture is as much about collective endeavor as it is about individual expression.

Like the archivist, I am engaged in the meticulous, often invisible labor of preserving and organizing the elements that allow architecture to function—documents, ideas, collaborations, and processes. In this, there is a profound connection to the fight Koolhaas’s project reflects: the relentless pursuit of keeping the concept alive, even when it demands sacrifices. The work I do is not just operational; it is integral to maintaining the integrity of architecture as a transformative discipline.

This journey—shaped by an education that once filled me with dreams of designing and now finds me supporting those who do—reminds me that the fight for architectural imagination continues. Every drawing I manage, every system I refine, and every collaboration I facilitate strengthens the foundation upon which architectural ideas are built. The fight goes on, and with it, the concept only grows stronger.
