Love Letters from Space
Love is in the air, and it’s out in space too! The universe is full of amazing chemistry, cosmic couples held together by gravitational attraction, and stars pulsing like beating hearts.
Celestial objects send out messages we can detect if we know how to listen for them. Our upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will help us scour the skies for all kinds of star-crossed signals.

Celestial Conversation Hearts
Communication is key for any relationship – including our relationship with space. Different telescopes are tuned to pick up different messages from across the universe, and combining them helps us learn even more. Roman is designed to see some visible light – the type of light our eyes can see, featured in the photo above from a ground-based telescope – in addition to longer wavelengths, called infrared. That will help us peer through clouds of dust and across immense stretches of space.
Other telescopes can see different types of light, and some detectors can even help us study cosmic rays, ghostly neutrinos, and ripples in space called gravitational waves.
Intergalactic Hugs
This visible and near-infrared image from the Hubble Space Telescope captures two hearts locked in a cosmic embrace. Known as the Antennae Galaxies, this pair’s love burns bright. The two spiral galaxies are merging together, igniting the birth of brand new baby stars.
Stellar nurseries are often very dusty places, which can make it hard to tell what’s going on. But since Roman can peer through dust, it will help us see stars in their infancy. And Roman’s large view of space coupled with its sharp, deep imaging will help us study how galaxy mergers have evolved since the early universe.

Cosmic Chemistry
Those stars are destined to create new chemistry, forging elements and scattering them into space as they live, die, and merge together. Roman will help us understand the cosmic era when stars first began forming. The mission will help scientists learn more about how elements were created and distributed throughout galaxies.
Did you know that U and I (uranium and iodine) were both made from merging neutron stars? Speaking of which…
Fatal Attraction
When two neutron stars come together in a marriage of sorts, it creates some spectacular fireworks! While they start out as stellar sweethearts, these and some other types of cosmic couples are fated for devastating breakups.
When a white dwarf – the leftover core from a Sun-like star that ran out of fuel – steals material from its companion, it can throw everything off balance and lead to a cataclysmic explosion. Studying these outbursts, called type Ia supernovae, led to the discovery that the expansion of the universe is speeding up. Roman will scan the skies for these exploding stars to help us figure out what’s causing the expansion to accelerate – a mystery known as dark energy.
Going Solo
Plenty of things in our galaxy are single, including hundreds of millions of stellar-mass black holes and trillions of “rogue” planets. These objects are effectively invisible – dark objects lost in the inky void of space – but Roman will see them thanks to wrinkles in space-time.
Anything with mass warps the fabric of space-time. So when an intervening object nearly aligns with a background star from our vantage point, light from the star curves as it travels through the warped space-time around the nearer object. The object acts like a natural lens, focusing and amplifying the background star’s light.
Thanks to this observational effect, which makes stars appear to temporarily pulse brighter, Roman will reveal all kinds of things we’d never be able to see otherwise.
Roman is nearly ready to set its sights on so many celestial spectacles. Follow along with the mission’s build progress in this interactive virtual tour of the observatory, and check out these space-themed Valentine’s Day cards.

MerMay GhostSoap 7
// MDNI // read at your own risk
For the following days, Johnny kept on high alert whenever he planned on visiting the wet fishman. Of course his bags were searched upon entry for metallic items, and everything had gone smoothly. His choice of canned sea delicacies were scrutinized every time.
This day had been octopus again, a beloved favorite. Coming in early with the idea to get new sketches of the fish, he entered the doors to an unusual brightness.
He realized that the tank was near empty.
His heart did somersaults as he rushed in, seeing hardly enough water to cover the fishman within if he wasn’t on his belly. Johnny pressed his palms into the glass, eyes searching, and finishing nothing in sight.
But Kyle stood above inside the room. Eyes fixed on Johnny.
Johnny corrected his shock with friendliness, giving a wave.
Kyle, arms crossed over his chest as he watched the tank filling slowly, flicked a nonchalant hand up. His gaze was indifferent, maybe even cold.
Johnny set his things down, pointing towards the door he’d come through. With a quick jog, he slipped through the doors, nodding to the guard who couldn’t care for him. Down the hall and into the main boiler room with the controls for water, he came up the stairs to the chalked door.
Kyle looked over his shoulder at him as he stood in the open door.
“How’s it going?” Johnny flashed a smile, taking a stand beside him.
“Did you usually blatantly ignore rules at your other job or it is just that you can’t read?” His tone was airy, but Johnny didn’t know if it was to soften the comment or hide his frustration.
Johnny smiled, sitting on the damp edge of the pool. “Ah, come on, Kyle. You know how boring it is to sit in a room all day with no windows or interactions with other people.”
“You signed up knowing that it’s the night shift.”
“Security means other people. I’m all alone in this room.” Johnny looked into the dark water, the grate pouring in gallons of water underneath him. His eyes searched for movement but all he could see were ripples of water from the current.
He noticed a ladder ingrained into the solid wall to the far left, closest to the glass. Not quite up to the half wall, but a stretch.
“The boss finds out you’re here, he’ll rip me a new one.” Kyle stated.
Johnny looked back at him with a smile. “Good thing I won’t tell him a thing.” He zipped his lips. “Say, I’ve noticed,” Johnny pointed to the camera in the corner, “that camera’s faulty. It goes out all the time.”
“I’ll tell the boss then.”
Johnny stared at him. There was a thing about people, a tell. Whether it be poker or a lie detector test, everyone had something that made them fold, a twitch, a tone, a sound.
Kyle’s was simple; his eyes.
He looked down at the tank, only after steadying on his feet and fixing his arms a little tighter around himself.
Johnny picked at his nails. “I’m watching something that shouldn’t be in the public eye, aren’t I?”
Kyle’s eyes shifted on him, defensiveness turned fear.
Johnny met his gaze firmly.
“If you know what’s good for you, you’ll keep your mind off stupid things.” Kyle stated.
Johnny tilted his head. “I’ve got a knack for making a mess.” He pointed at the camera again. “That camera’s faulty because you’re cleaning the tank. The filter is too loud.” He pointed downward, “And whatever they’ve got in this tank doesn’t like the noise.”
Kyle looked like a hare ready to skid off at the first sight of danger. He was frozen, watching for movement in Johnny’s body.
Only the sound of the water rushing down from the covered pipe kept between them.
“What’s in the tank, Kyle? And why does the general have it?”
Kyle shook his head softly, almost minute.
“I won’t tell if you won’t tell. It dies with me in this room.”
“Shepherd doesn’t play with his enemies.”
“I’m not an enemy. Just a civilian who wants to know if I need to leave to keep my life. You understand that, right?”
Kyle’s eyes panned to the camera.
“It’s not working. I promise. It cuts back in when you leave this room every time.” Johnny said, folding his hands between his spread lap.
Kyle fixed his arms across himself. “I don’t know what’s in the tank. So you can’t use it against me. No one knows but Shepherd.”
“Have you seen anything inside of it? Don’t you ever wonder why it’s so dirty? Why you have to keep cleaning it?”
“Because it’s a tank, it’s an ecosystem. It gets dirty because there’s microorganisms in there.”
“And?”
“Nothing else.” His voice was peaking, cracking with nervousness.
“You’ve seen things in the tank. You’ve worked here for a long time.” Johnny stood.
“I keep to myself. Just like you should. It’s none of your business or mine to see what’s in this tank.” He pointed at Johnny.
“But you have. You’re not scared of Shepherd for no reason. You’ve seen what’s in the tank, that’s why.”
“What difference does it make!” Kyle yelled.
“Because I’ve seen it too.”
Kyle stared at Johnny, shaking his head before averting to the tank. He pointed, “That thing in there. It’s vicious. It harmed the previous maintenance crew, and I don’t want to be in here anymore than I have to.”
“Have you ever considered why? Why it does those things?”
“I don’t care—“
“It’s scared.” Johnny said. “It’s in a place it doesn’t belong in, with new things around it. Loud machines cleaning out the tank every week, hardly any scraps of food. It’s scared. Just like you are.”
Kyle shook his head. “You made a mistake coming here. Just do your job. Don’t talk to me about this again.”
Leaving through the door, Johnny stared into the filling tank and back to the door. Just a slip of the security room was in sight, soon flushed out by the deep water. If there was anything he could do, he would get the only other person to see and know more.
x
The tank was quiet for the rest of the shift. Though Johnny had tempted the fish with his wiggling fingers in the water, it didn’t surface like before. He opened his can and let the contents spill out inside and left with no new drawings.
The next day he’d hoped to catch sight of something but couldn’t.
He approached the following day. “Where are you, you bastard?” Johnny rolled his sleeves up, dipping his hands into the water. He slapped them against the stone wall, feeling the collective grime. “Lord only knows how this tank gets so dirty so quick.” He huffed.
Johnny pulled his hands out of the water, searching his bag for his can.
The water rippled.
Peeking up, Johnny leaned over the ledge to look into the water. “There you are.” Johnny stuck his hand into the water, patting the water. “Come here.”
With the flick of its tail above the surface, the fishman came close enough from Johnny to almost graze his fingertips along his wading body.
"Where have you been this whole time?" Johnny asked. "I've been looking for you for the last two days." He began cracking open the cans of whole mackerels. "These aren't cheap, you know?"
The fish trilled, much quieter than usual, but accepted the fish one by one.
"What's up with you?" Johnny furrowed his brows at the munching fishman. "Hm?" With half a mind, Johnny extended his hand outward towards the fishman. He'd didn't know his intention completely, but the soft huff of a breath at his fishy palm made him reel his hand back. "That was not safe." He laughed at himself. "Probably shouldn't do that when I've got fish in my hands."
The fishman, oblivious, continued accepting fish from Johnny's hands and soon clasped its forearms over the half wall to look at his lap where the can sat. Reaching out towards it sent Johnny into a short panic, but he watched as it plucked up a fish by a sharp, short talon and brought it within reach of its mouth.
Johnny scoffed sheepishly. "I don't know if I really like how comfortable you are. But I'll take it as a compliment that I'm still alive."
When the can was empty, the fishman discard it at the half-walls edge, and smacked it lips. It blinked its wide eyes up at him.
"I wish I knew more about you. Or something about you." Johnny sighed. "I wish you could talk. Wouldn't that be something?" Johnny smiled. "Fishman Discovered On Land. News articles will have my name all over it, I'd be out of a job. Probably for the rest of me life." He grimaced. "I don't know how you'd handle all the attention. You hate cameras and loud noises."
The fishman hummed, as if it were listening to his every word. Buoying up against the half-wall, tail splashing against the water's surface.
"I don't think I've ever told you my name." Johnny frowned. He pressed a hand to his chest. "My name is John MacTavish. You can call me Johnny."
The sound that vibrated through the fishman's chest sounded an awfully like the slope of Johnny. Much like a sigh, buried deep in it's throat. So much so that Johnny perked up.
"John-ny." He said again.
The fishman hummed again. Johnny.
Johnny shot up from his seat on the steps, hands going up in the air. The movement spooked the fishman but it returned immediately. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't- you said my name. Or- I think you did. Twice." He stuck his fingers up.
The fishman did the same.
Johnny laughed. "I need to be back on my medication. That's the only explanation. Right?" He knelt quickly, hands resting on the cement half-wall, oh so, close to the fish. "Say Johnny."
The fishman, like an excited pup, pushed its face into Johnny's. That recognizable sigh shuttered past its sharp, fishy teeth as it rubbed its wet cheek to Johnny's.
Johnny laughed, tucking his chin down to fend of the affections, pushing a hand up against its chest to brush it back. "Alright! Alright!"
He pulled himself back but a fishy claw snatched his collar to bring him back in. Johnny's hands pushed firmly against the cement half-wall. The only thing keeping him from being pulled over was his own strength. There was a sudden sense of panic crawling up his spine as it clenched his shirt, but it settled to press the side of its face to his chest.
There was a faint but heavy THUD THUD, THUD THUD, THUD THUD underneath Johnny's chest that the fish was suddenly so captured by. Pressing firmly into his sternum, the fishman rubbed its face into his body until it had found the loudest spot.
Johnny sat in frozen shock as it rested against his chest, its hand holding tight to the material of his shirt, dangling at his hip. It trilled, shoulders rising and falling like a content cat purring. Carefully, he brought his hand down on its shoulder. The flesh was wet, of course, but there was more to it. The texture was smooth, like scales, and every connecting layer of tissue was hard, as if it were simulating armor.
He followed between its assumed shoulder blades with gentle grazes, feeling its humanoid bones beneath and continuing down. The chunky scarring along its body was soft, its armor weakest at said point or completely exposed to damage unlike the rest of its body. He traced around the scar from its ribs down towards it hips where its tail started.
Its tail glowed in the water below as its lawnmower purring increased.
"If only I could show Kyle this." Johnny hummed.
The fish pressed against his chest a little firmer as he spoke, trying to listen to the soft thrumming of his heartbeat instead. It understood the concept of heartbeats, of course, it had one of its own. And so did it's mother before it, and it's father. Of course, it was a brief introduction before it was given the necessary understanding of how to live alone, but it knew these funny creatures enough.
The fish liked this particular, funny little creature that supplied all the delicacies to be eaten. He wasn't like the others it ever come across, all vicious and sharp teeth. His teeth were small, pearly, like lovely quartz pebbles that could be found on the sea floor. His eyes were reminiscent of lapis stones, or the bioluminescent moon jellyfish it would toy with, or the surface of the water when the sun would sit just above.
There was a faint memory of what that water looked like. It was nothing compared to the lights shining blindingly over the tank.
Johnny patted the fish's back softly, clasping its shoulders to push at it softly at first. "If I could spend all my time up here with you, I would." He sighed, "But if they find me up here, let alone this," Johnny didn't know what they would think.
They'd probably think he was fucking the fish.
He tried to wipe that thought from his mind. He patted its shoulders again. "Time to go."
The fish rubbed its cheek into his chest, settling closer.
Johnny put a hand at the back of its wet head, the other against its cheek before he was peeling his body back. "I have to go back. You'll still see me." He pushed a little firmer to unleash its hand from his side.
The fish's head turned against his palm, and before he could even render, the sharp teeth latched onto the web of his hand. It broke skin, drew blood, Johnny knew this because the pain shot up his arm as if he was stabbed in the ribs.
"FUCK." He shouted, the fish unlatched, and he shot up in panic. His back hit the chalked door as he clamped his bleeding hand tightly. Not only did the wound bleed, but it started to burn immediately. It felt like he'd shoved his hand right into a firepit, and despite free will, he was keeping it there.
Blood started dripping down his palm.
Johnny began to panic. What he thought was safe literally bit him back, and stared up at him with a curious gaze, eyes wide like a predator wondering why its bleeding prey was screaming. He yanked the door open, doing his best to keep the blood from dripping all over the floor.
There was no bandages he could use in this room, and if he left, they'd see it. They'd see the semi-circular bite mark on the top of his hand, then turn to see the bottom row of teeth leaving an imprint on his palm. He felt like vomiting, spiraling as he searched the security room, his lunch box, for napkins to blot the wound.
Blood clean from its mouth in the water, the fish stared at Johnny from behind the glass in curiosity as he stumbled to press down on his wounds. Why was he so frightened and loud? Why was he bleeding so much? Was his skin not tough like armor? Did he not like the love bite he was given? Was this part of the courting game they were playing?
Johnny grabbed his lunch box, moving for the door in panic with his hand tucked under his shirt.
The fish hurried to the glass, hands pressed up against the surface, hitting it as the sirens blaring overhead. Where was the funny creature going? Why did he take his belongings? Wouldn't he be there for a while longer?
Johnny looked at the fish as the door was opening. Sweat had formed at his brow, nausea becoming him.
It paused, hands flat, bubbles escaping as it trilled a silenced whistle. John-ny. John-ny. John-ny.
Johnny pushed through the opening doors.
The fish balled tight fists against the glass, hammering viciously as the doors were coming to a close. Siren screaming over the panicked currents. It dove up onto the concrete floors, fingers wedged between the door jam and door.
John-ny. John-ny. John-ny.
It jumped back into the water, glancing into the room as if he'd come back. He would come back, right? He was just playing a game, right? Creatures played games, like when the fishman would play with jellyfish, right?
The overhead lights began flickering as it got back on land, trying at the latched door. Why wasn't it opening? The funny creatures knew how to open the door, so why couldn't it? It yanked at the handle viciously, door groaning, and it gave a howl before storming back into the water.
John-ny. John-ny. John-ny.
The lights flickered, bursting overhead. The power going out meant the alarm system was dead, filtration system off. All electrical doors were locked.
The entire grid was in blackout.
And Johnny MacTavish was gone.
a/n: I absolutely had to put in some angst; what do you think is going to happen now?
next chapter coming soon!

Suyin Beifong is such a weird character narratively
In many ways, she's the weirdest character in ATLA or LoK in her place in the story, considering her actions and beliefs. Let's just walk through everything.
Suyin got herself involved in criminal activities and street gangs as a kid and helped rob stuff. Then she scarred Lin when Lin tried to arrest her for that. And the fallout from that is implied to have led to Toph retiring.
After that, Suyin was sent to live with her (extremely wealthy) grandparents. After a while, she left them and began traveling the world and trying out various things, including being part of a traveling circus, living in a sandbender commune, and joining the crew of a pirate ship. Note that pirates rob and kill people. Note also that Suyin seems to have felt just about zero remorse for any of the above, and expected and demanded that Lin forgive her for everything without getting an apology.
Eventually, Suyin had had enough of all the traveling and robbing and killing and circus performing, so she used her vast, vast family wealth and bought a plot of land to build her own city on.
Zaofu seems to be essentially a Beifong family dictatorship defined by Suyin's ideological beliefs. As far as I can tell, the guiding principles of the city are "progress," "modernity," harmony, order, and control. After all, as Suyin says "Thanks to Aiwei, there are no secrets in our city," and she evidentially likes that a lot. The degree to which Suyin values absolute control over her city can also be seen in how incredibly outraged she gets when Kuvira, Baatar Jr., and some other citizens decide to leave on their own initiative. Her anger at Aiwei's betrayal ("I want you to hunt down Aiwei and bring him back to me") also fits the same pattern. Interestingly, Kuvira always claims to have gotten 90% of her fascist ideology from Suyin and Zaofu, and I actually think she was telling the truth, that Zaofu was a city organized on proto-fascist principles and Kuvira merely applied its principles to the wider Earth Kingdom.
Now perhaps we should turn to Suyin's relationship with Kuvira, which always seems very odd to me. Suyin took Kuvira in when Kuvira was a young child and trained her and claims "Kuvira was like a daughter to me." Yet Suyin never seems to really treat Kuvira like a daughter when the two interact on screen, nor do Suyin's children seem to see Kuvira as a sister. Notably, when Suyin introduces her family to Korra, she doesn't include Kuvira, nor is Kuvira invited to the dinners with Team Avatar. It's all very weird.
Anyways, Korra first arrives at Zaofu, Suyin seems to expect her, the Avatar, to stay in Zaofu relatively permanently to personally tutor Opal in airbending. The idea that Korra has other important responsibilities which don't involve personally serving Suyin's interests doesn't seem to cross Suyin's mind. We also find that Suyin is sheltering Varrick and Zhu Li, awful, highly amoral criminals, from justice since they're useful. On the plus side, Suyin is willing to personally teach Korra and even Bolin metalbending. She even eventually offers an apology to Lin for her behavior when younger, an something which helps reconciles the siblings. Suyin even allows Opal to leave for the Northern Air Temple.
Then the Red Lotus attacks, Suyin helps drive them off, etc. Everyone realizes that the Red Lotus had inside help, Suyin uses Aiwei the lie detector to search for the traitor, it turns out Aiwei was the traitor, he flees, Suyin is suitably outraged, and so on. Then we get to something "interesting": Korra wants Team Avatar to go after Aiwei, Lin (correctly) points out that this is way too dangerous, and then Suyin lies to and deceives Lin to make her think Suyin agrees with her and go bed, before personally sending Team Avatar after Aiwei anyways, something which goes very poorly. Suyin and Lin have barely reconciled, and practically first thing Suyin does is lie to and manipulate her sister. And yeah, Lin is pretty pissed that Suyin "stabbed her in the back" next time they talk, but essentially the entire thing blows over with zero consequences for Suyin.
The next thing that Suyin really does in the narrative is lead Zaofu's security forces to help Korra, Team Avatar, Lin, and Tonraq take on the Red Lotus and rescue the airbenders. This is objectively a good thing, but it's also interesting, considering what we later learn about Suyin's isolationist beliefs. However, it's worth pointing out that Suyin had several personal motives for her actions here: Her daughter Opal is one of the airbending hostages, Lin her sister is evidentially going to be involved, and the Red Lotus had the temerity to attack Zaofu and Suyin is probably pretty pissed about that. Without these "ulterior" motives, I doubt Suyin would have been willing to get involved. Then Suyin helps everyone else defeat the Red Lotus, but doesn't really do anything too interesting as part of that. Cut to Book 4.
What Suyin mostly does through Book 4 is oppose Kuvira, but we still get some interesting material as part of that. We learn that Suyin was asked to help stabilize the Earth Kingdom between books, but she refused. Considering how the children she raised ended up handling things, it's very likely that Suyin would have ended up becoming a (bigger) fascist dictator, so Suyin's refusal is also probably a good thing, even though refusing to provide aid to a country in anarchy probably isn't the best thing.
Kuvira and Baatar Jr. disagree about this, and they leave for Ba Sing Se with "Varrick, my security force, and a few of Zaofu's wealthiest citizens." Suyin is so outraged she responds by declaring them (or at least Kuvira) exiles, forever banished from Zaofu. We also see the start of a couple tendencies which will reoccur in the season. These are Suyin blaming Kuvira for Baatar Jr.'s bad actions and Zaofu's citizens being pretty OK with Kuvira and her actions, while only the Beifong family hates her.
Next time we see Suyin, it's at Prince Wu's "coronation." Normally Suyin would absolutely despise a royal idiot like Wu, but she hates Kuvira so much that she's willing to join the other world leaders in imposing him on the Earth Kingdom (as a useful lackey?). After that doesn't work out, Suyin tries to convince Kuvira to step down, something which goes poorly.
A couple episodes later, Kuvira shows up with an army and demands Suyin surrender Zaofu, something that Suyin understandably is pissed about. Mutual recriminations result, Suyin again blames Kuvira for all the actions of her fascist dictator son, and so on. Korra tries to continue negotiations, but Suyin has already left to try to assassinate Kuvira in her sleep. That's maybe a reasonable reaction to what Kuvira is doing, but it's an odd way to treat someone who is "like a daughter" to you. There's also evidence that Suyin doesn't really get that people are legitimately loyal to Kuvira and legitimately believe in her ideology, or that Baatar Jr. agrees with Kuvira, is equally complicit in her policies, and would continue leading the Earth Empire in its conquests if she died. Anyways, Suyin's attempt fails, she ends up captured, and ultimately she's forced to watch Zaofu's citizenry bow to Kuvira and cheer her. Although there was still coercion involved, the fact that only the Beifong family refused to bow is still evidence that the "Metal Clan's" general population has a reasonably positive view of Kuvira and her ideology and the only reason the Beifongs don't is because they have a personal vendetta against her. After all, Kuvira's ideology derives from Zaofu.
After that, Suyin doesn't do too much, narratively. She escapes with her family from Kuvira and Baatar Jr.'s prison for them and she opposes Kuvira's attempt to conquer Republic City. Again, that's objectively a good thing, but Suyin opposing it also makes perfect sense given the depth of her vendetta against Kuvira. The only interesting thing is that Suyin instantly forgives her fascist dictator son and doesn't hold him the least bit accountable for his actions, while continuing to hate Kuvira after she apologizes. Again, more evidence that Suyin does not, in fact, view Kuvira as a part of the family.
Overall, Suyin is narratively very weird. Based on all that I've discussed above, it's clear that she's very much not a good person, nor is she particularly likeable. She basically runs a mini-fascist dictatorship, after all. Yet Suyin not only gets a massive amount of narrative attention (it seems like some of the writers really liked the idea of her and her family), but is always an ally of the protagonists and is never held truly accountable for her actions. Considering who she is as a person and her backstory, having her be an antagonist or villain would in many ways make more sense, but that's not the route they went.
TLoK was really into giving its antagonists half-assed redemption/quasi-redemption arcs (Tarrlok, Desna and Eska, Varrick, Zhu Li, Tahno, Zaheer, Hiroshi Sato, Baatar Jr., Kuvira), but Suyin doesn't really fit into this paradigm, since she was never an antagonist in the first place. The only characters across ATLA and TLoK who really remind me of her, in terms of being bad people who are never really called out by the narrative, are King Bumi, Varrick and Zhu Li, and Iroh.
Of these, King Bumi is a complete dick, but he's a much more minor character than Suyin and gets away with a lot due to being a "comedy" character.
Varrick is an absolutely awful person, but the narrative lets him avoid consequences for that since he's likeable and funny. Zhu Li really just tags along with his narrative.
Iroh is morally grey at best in the present and morally black in the past, but again the narrative avoids calling him out about it since he's funny and likeable and nice to the most audience sympathetic character, Zuko. The narrative even starts painting him as perfect and a saint after a certain point, something which continued in TLoK.
Suyin isn't like any of them. She's not a comedy character. She's not funny or likeable. And it's not like the narrative paints her as perfect, like it does for Iroh. She sometimes suffers the consequences of her actions, and I think she's supposed to come off as significantly flawed. On the other hand, the narrative never really calls out Suyin for any of her terrible behavior, bad actions, or general bullshit. She's never held truly accountable in any way for anything. It's all very odd.

TMAGP 11 Thoughts: Anchors Aweigh
We're finally back. Not much to say up top except it was a long wait.
Spoilers for episode 11, and light spoilers for TMA season 5, below the cut.
A very strong cold open to welcome us back. Celia doesn't just wake up in a strange location, she's got no memory of getting there, it's not her first time doing it, and she's looking for a character we've not yet been introduced to. Honestly there are a load of things this could be. If she's TMA's Celia it could be after effects of her time in the domain that stole her name. Or it's not after effects but the same effects now being re-triggered if she's in a universe with the same entity that did it. Or it's a side-effect of crossing between universes. Or the way she crossed between universes isn't how Anya Villette did it and she's actually occupying TMP's Lynne Hammond's body but not entirely suppressing Lynne in the process. Or Lynne has taken on Celia's memories and Celia never truly left TMA's universe at all. Lots of ways I can see that playing out.
The first office section is a bit of a recap of last episode with some banter more than it is anything substantive. However, Alice does think she's being followed which is probably something that'll come up later. I think the obvious thing to jump at here is that it's [Error]. It's not the first time we've seen someone dig through the Institute's soggy ruins only to come away with some paranoia though. It doesn't seem to be hitting her quite as hard as RedCanary but it certainly mirrors their reaction. Either way I think this could easily be a RedHerring and [Error] has nothing to do with it and it's just TMI magic.
For a small thing during that interaction there is another "lie detector" audio distortion. I'm not sure I've been mentioning all of these in these posts but when Alice says "Hm? Nah, it’s nothing." there is a distortion afterwards. Likely because such distortions signify lies. This exactly a new observation but I can't remember if I'm making an effort to note when they happen.
So for the first case back it's a pretty chill one all in all. Some spooky happenings where nothing major really happens but does contain a good bit of world building.
So for some general musings in order. First off Alison Leshi's email address is G.Leshi instead of A.Leshi. It's not likely important as there isn't a Leshi in CHDB (see masterdoc link below), so it's probably nothing. Could just be some subtle trans rep but I figure it could somehow come up later and so is worth a mention.l
Next up we've got our second mention of ink5oul. The "big snake tattoo" on their arm is pretty clearly the same as the "gorgeous floral serpent design" Daria mentions in episode 2. Daria also explains that ink5oul is a popular influencer and like most of those they try and throw that weight around here. They're a very big deal online don't you know. Something that I think is interesting, but maybe not intended, is that ink5oul's Instagram account is flagged with the alchemic symbol for salt and this case is deeply tied to the sea. That account might not be official but it's a nice connection if it is.
There are a couple of name drops that will likely prove pretty important. Oscar Jarrett is likely a character we'll meet later and as of right now the name is all we have. Sutherland Macdonald, on the other hand, is a very real person and given how TMA likes to use historic characters I have a feeling they'll be quite important. Macdonald was Britain's first professional tattoo artist. Insofar as he had a public business in which he tattooed people as his work. He was exceptionally talented, very popular, and highly sought-after. More than that though of his documented works serpent-motifs, both snakes and dragons, are very common. Given ink5oul's own, well, ink I'm pretty sure that's not a coincidence. Sutherland Macdonald could very well be another figure like Smirke. A real historic person with embellished and occult history for the show. Oscar Jarrett could be a protégé or rival of Sutherland, and tattoos might end up being the new Leitners.
There isn't much to dig in to beyond that but I will say I really enjoyed this episode. Excited to see where this all goes.
Back in the office we've got Gwen trauma, Celia trauma, and Lena being Lena. Which is all great stuff. Bonzo is likely hunting Klaus given that conversation too. That's the only figure Gwen has any real knowledge of and Lena obviously has some unresolved business there. The transcript sheds some additional light on the interactions here too as both times external is mentioned it's capitalised. Which does seem to imply it's an official position at the OIAR rather than something euphemistic. Mr. Bonzo getting more detail here is also great. It's another reinforcement that whatever he now is very much isn't how he started. "Green custard" getting a shout out is also very welcome. That's not so much a Mr. Blobby thing but people getting slimed was a big fixture of that era of children's TV in Britain.
Sam finally looking to cross reference these things is great to hear as well. I crave more data. Speaking of data, now it's time for the nerd shit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Incident/CAT#R#DPHW Master Sheet
DPHW Theory: 5246 is pretty unremarkable and so I don't think I've got much to explain there. 4 is a little lower than I was expecting but not off by so much that I think something is wrong.
CAT# Theory: CAT23 sure is a category. I was hoping to have something solid by the time the break was over. There are enough outliers in every theory I've seen to pretty confidently think no one is on the right track with this or some people are but the data we have is faulty. Which to be fair we know is the case. It's just about which parts of the data should we be ignoring.
R# Theory: C fits in perfectly with my theory. Not much to say on that one.
Header talk: Tattoo (corpse) -/- compulsion is mostly interesting because of how it creates problems with Daria's case. If Tattoo is a section that would strongly imply that Daria's case should have been Tattoo rather than Transformation. But that one did also show up on Klaus which implies that it's correct. Just a weird section in general. The subsection is about the sort of mess you'd expect at this point. The crosslink is also just a crosslink.

I know I'm not saying anything new or groundbreaking, but if you think about it, the writers really don't know how to incorporate characters into the narrative unless it is for pointless romantic drama or to be manipulated by Lila.
I'd say the treatment Luka and Kagami got in season 5 is the best example of it.
Kagami got to keep appearing because they used her as, say, a sort of catalyst for Lila's "solo villain" arc. Never mind it made no sense because Kagami had already been akumatised by her actions and was quite literally in Chat Noir's arms when he said she couldn't be trusted back in Oni-chan, or even the fact that after Protection that friendship served no further purpose other than Kagami informing Lila she wasn't invited to the Diamonds Ball because she was a nobody. Because, let's face it, they really didn't need to drag one of the best characters through the mud like that for something that could have been done by either Chloé (by virtue of being Lila's willing accomplice and haughty enough to brag about such a thing) or Gabriel (who at that point was quite done dealing with the brat he himself gave power to in the first place).
And aside from that, she also kept appearing for two reasons: her original, lingering feelings for Adrien and the fact that their parents wanted them to end up together kept feeding the Adrienette drama, and then she got her own share when her character was basically retooled into Félix's girlfriend and willing accomplice.
Compare it to Luka's situation. His only real major role was in Migration because his supportive and mature personality meant he was no longer involved in the romantic aspect of the show, and it would have been even more egregious to have him fall for Lila's lies when he is a living lie detector thanks to his ability to hear people's inner music. Notice how the two have NEVER interacted.
And what happened to him? He was unceremoniously booted for the remainder of the season (except the finale, I guess) despite his very important role of being Ladybug and Chat Noir's secret secret-keeper, which was admittedly a much more compelling angle than "Adrienette: The Star-Crossed Lovers" or "How to Use a Lying 14-Year-Old to Justify Your Terrorist Abusive Father Villain Being Redeemed" routes the season took.
God, this got long.
Legit they had no clue what to do with them and honestly I’m grateful Luka got shipped off to learn magic kung fu in Brazil when the alternative was the huge fucking mess they made with Kagami
If I’d had my way and Adrien was involved with the plot, Kagami (alongside Nino) could’ve served as support for figuring out their parent’s’ evil plans and putting a stop to them. No Lila, no arranged marriage, no Felix, just her and her buds uncovering Evil Secrets.
Similarly, I’d have had Luka (alongside Alya) serve as support for Marinette as she figures out Guardian stuff without the deadbeat daddy drama

"What if they kissed?" Mammon? >:)
Send what if they kissed, and i'll make a one shot, one off, possibly non-canon drabble of a smooch.
Being down here made the monsters skin crawl. Sure, there technically wasn't any rule about monsters being in the after lives. Some of them even worked with most of them, Cerberus guarded the entrance to hell. Banshee's delivered news of saints passing to the people of Earth. Even demons and angels were considered monsters in some religions. Quite frankly. There weren't rules about them being here because they, are to earth, what hellborns are to. Well. Hell.
And considering (for the most part) they had no souls, there was no afterlife for them to wait for to come down here. When they died they simply. Stopped existing or were recycled to make new monsters.
That all being said. It didn't mean that the chimera liked being here any less. It made her skin crawl, she felt like she was always doing something wrong being here. And hell was a finite space. There were only so many places you could go before you ran into someone you wish you'd hadn't.
And this was the first time she was waiting for Ollie inside the bugs nest itself! There were plenty of people here, and quite frankly. Honey looked like a Gluttony demon. Apparently they were multi eyes, multi armed, and pastel too. And her name? Its fine. Its fine. Just blend in--
"Oy? What do we have here?"
Of course, Mammon knew who she was, after all. He kept tabs on everyone who rented out his product. And with the monster specifically, he's been texting her pretending to be one of his prized robots. And she was none the wiser. Thank goodness that little lie detector ability didn't work through devices, hm?
Of course he knew when and where she was going to be. After all, he set up this meeting.
"Don't I know you from somewhere?"
"WHOOT? Me? No Ah doon't know ye, we're practically strangers, t'ats tae definition. Note... knowin' someone." Technically not a lie. One of the sins was one of the LAST people she wanted to be interacting with right now. Monsters got... a little funny. Around creatures of power.
Meanwhile, the kingpin of the greed ring was eating up watching the monster squirm. She was an oddity down here, a rare find, and what said greed more then having something that was one of a kind and limited edition?
"Ah'm just here. Waiting fer a friend."
"Waiting? All alone out here? A pretty thing like yourself?" He needed to turn up the charm. "A small thing like yourself? You're going to attract unwanted attention."
The monsters face twitched, her own mask dropping ever so slightly. "And... yer tellin' meh this just to be charitable?"
A toothy smile crept onto his face. "What? Here? Please, its bad business to be giving out help for free. Do you know what ring you're in? No, i'm giving you a warning." He bent down, he did have at least 8 good feet on her. "And it doesn't come cheap. The folks around here are paying you no mind because of me." Of course he told the staff to ignore her, and to make sure Ollie got out a little late.
"Me standing here and talking to you means you have my protection. And that goes a long way down here."
The pleasant smile and faux nervous demeanor dropped. Her arms crossed and clawless fingers digging into the muscle of her arms. She was practicing self restraint in the upmost manner. Pretty sure cursing out a sin lord, or throwing hands with one, probably got you thrown in jail down here.
"And whoot do ye want? A fiver? Some cookies? Out wit' it, fecker."
"Well, as long as we're both dropping pleasantries." He hissed. Pulling a neon lit cigarette out of his suit pocket. "I could have you banned from this entire ring. Much less from renting from me again."
"Whoot. Do. Ye. Want." The monster hissed back, pausing venomously after each word.
"I'm getting to it. Yeesh. You know patience is a virtue toots. People thinking you're running with me will get you far, not to mention it might as well be true with how often you're seen down here with my bots. I want a kiss."
"A WHOOT--"
Of course it was a bluff to make her squirm more. No sane person would kiss him. But it would have narrowed her options into saying yes to something more egregious. Maybe money, maybe extorting her, maybe information? Who knew. Knowing a creature topside that could travel back and forth freely wasn't an every day boon.
So Mammon laid on the pressure a bit more
"A kiss." The insect confirmed, he blew out noxious green smoke, from inbetween sharp, intercrossing teeth. "But of course. If it's a no, well then we're going to have to-- what the hell?"
His lips bent upwards in surprise. Eyebrows narrowing as he felt something around his neck. What was this? A plant!? Here? Coming from the chimera no less. The same chimera who lifted herself off the ground with more of them bulging from his floor. Making her an impromptu step ladder. With the combination of the plant hooked around the back of his neck. She used two of her arms to lift herself up, pull him down, and have their lips meet.
Plump white lips, met his more firmly disguised mandibles, her tusks making an opening inbetween for her tongue to dart through. This may have been the last person off earth she wanted to run into, but she had a reputation to keep! And as it stood, Mammon's tongue ran with the invite to invade her mouth. After he got his parings, the much sharper and thinner proboscis unfurled and probed around her mouth. Threatening to occupy her throat before he suddenly felt it sliding out.
The cold air hitting it was palpable considering it just hade the ecstasy of a warm mouth. Honey was already wiping her mouth by the time he put his insect like tongue away and stood up. Neither of them were bad kissers. Neither of them were going to give the other the satisfaction of knowing that..
"You. Just went for it huh? Something you not telling me?" He crooned out, trying to prod another reaction.
"Deals a deal twig man. Doon't let it beh said it woosn't. Now buzz off. Ah woont tae ferget tae past 60 seconds." The plants retreated, leaving only a loose floor tile in their wake as she walked around him, trying to compose herself.
Both from indignancy and just kissing someone 3 times her size. Pretending the people who were staring weren't. After all. She doubts that they'd gossip about their boss if they knew what was healthy for them.
"OLLIIIEEEE. OVERHERE."
Mamon only looked at her as she ran off and snuffed his cigarette. "Gnnn. FIne." Well played, he knows better next time.

The heaviest proton emitter: A new type of atomic nucleus discovered
For the first time in more than thirty years, the heaviest nucleus decaying via proton emission has been measured. The previous similar breakthrough was achieved in 1996.
The radioactive decay of atomic nuclei has been one of the keystones of nuclear physics since the beginning of nuclear research. Now the heaviest nucleus decaying via proton emission has been measured in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
“Proton emission is a rare form of radioactive decay, in which the nucleus emits a proton to take a step towards stability,” says Doctoral Researcher Henna Kokkonen from the University of Jyväskylä.
Studying exotic nuclei is difficult, but not impossible
The new nucleus is so far the lightest known isotope of astatine, 188At, consisting of 85 protons and 103 neutrons. Exotic nuclei of this kind are extremely challenging to study due to their short lifetimes and low production cross sections, so precise techniques are needed.
“The nucleus was produced in a fusion-evaporation reaction by irradiating natural silver target with 84Sr ion beam,” says Academy Research Fellow Kalle Auranen from the University of Jyväskylä. “The new isotope was identified using the detector setup of the RITU recoil separator.”
Study reveals new findings on heavy nuclei
In addition to the experimental results, the study expanded a theoretical model to interpret the measured data. Through the model, the nucleus can be interpreted as strongly prolate, i.e. “watermelon shaped”.
“The properties of the nucleus suggests a trend change in the binding energy of the valence proton,” says Kokkonen. “This is possibly explained by an interaction unprecedented in heavy nuclei.”
The study is a follow-up to the master’s thesis
The study is part of Kokkonen’s doctoral thesis and a direct scientific follow-up to her master’s thesis, in which she discovered a new type of atomic nucleus, the 190-astatatine. The thesis article was published in the Physical Review C journal in 2023.
“Isotope discoveries are rare worldwide, and this is the second time I have had the opportunity to be part of making history,” Kokkonen rejoices. “Every experiment is challenging, and it feels great to do research that improves understanding of the limits of matter and the structure of atomic nuclei.” The research article was written as part of an international research collaboration involving experts in theoretical nuclear physics.

How HPLC Column Works: Principles of Separation Explained
Introduction
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is a cornerstone technique in analytical chemistry, widely used in pharmaceutical, biotech, food, and environmental labs. At the heart of every HPLC system lies a critical component: the column. But how does an HPLC column actually work? Understanding this process helps analysts improve separation, troubleshoot issues, and choose the right column for their applications.
In this article, we’ll break down how an HPLC column works, covering its internal structure, separation mechanism, and key factors that affect performance.
The Role of the HPLC Column
The HPLC column is the site where the actual separation of analytes occurs. It contains a packed bed of stationary phase particles that interact with compounds in the injected sample. As the mobile phase flows through the column, different compounds move at different speeds, depending on how strongly they interact with the stationary phase.
The result? Each component elutes at a different time, producing a unique retention time that’s essential for identification and quantification.
How HPLC Column Works – Step-by-Step Process
1. Sample Injection
The process starts when the sample is introduced into the HPLC system via an injector and carried by the mobile phase toward the column.
2. Interaction with the Stationary Phase
As the sample passes through the column, each analyte interacts with the stationary phase. The strength and nature of these interactions (hydrophobic, polar, ionic) determine how long a compound is retained.
3. Separation Mechanism
In Reverse Phase HPLC (e.g., C18 columns), non-polar compounds interact more strongly with the hydrophobic stationary phase and elute later.
In Normal Phase HPLC, polar compounds are retained longer.
4. Elution
Each compound exits (elutes from) the column at a different time. The detector records these elution times as peaks on a chromatogram.
Internal Structure of an HPLC Column
An HPLC column consists of:
Tube material: Usually stainless steel or PEEK
Stationary phase: Silica-based particles bonded with functional groups (e.g., C18, C8, phenyl, amino, etc.)
Particle size: Typically 3–5 µm in analytical columns; affects resolution and backpressure
Column dimensions: Common lengths (50–250 mm) and internal diameters (2.1–4.6 mm)
Each of these factors influences how well the column separates your target analytes.
Factors That Influence Column Functionality
Several variables impact how effectively an HPLC column performs: Factor Impact
Mobile Phase Composition Affects elution strength and retention time
pH Alters ionization of analytes and stability of bonded phase
Temperature Influences viscosity, analyte interaction, and column lifetime
Flow Rate Affects resolution and analysis time
Optimizing these conditions is crucial for method development and reproducible results.
Common Questions: How HPLC Columns Work
❓ Is a longer column always better?
Not necessarily. Longer columns may improve resolution but increase run time and pressure. It's about balancing separation needs with practicality.
❓ Can I reuse the same column for different samples?
Columns can be reused, but cross-contamination and degradation over time can impact results. Using guard columns helps extend column life.
❓ What’s the difference between analytical and preparative columns?
Analytical columns are used for small-scale quantification, while preparative columns are larger and used to isolate and collect purified compounds.
Conclusion
Understanding how an HPLC column works is fundamental to mastering liquid chromatography. From the chemistry of interactions to the mechanical design, each element of the column plays a role in achieving sharp, reliable separation.
At Zodiac Life Sciences, we offer a wide range of HPLC columns — including C18, C8, phenyl, and amino — engineered for precision, consistency, and longevity. Explore our selection today to find the right column for your lab's needs.

The Importance of AI Detection Tools for Business and Content Creation
Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming numerous industries, particularly in content production. Tools such as zero chat gpt and zero chatgpt are making strong strides in the world of AI. The increasing advancements and complexities of AI tools render the task of distinguishing between human and AI produced content very difficult. As a result, there has been a sharp increase in demand for highly accurate and precise ai detection software which can effectively solve these challenges. At the same time, the introduction of AI writing software places immense importance on ai detection technologies which are critical for businesses, educators, and content producers.
This blog sheds light on the importance of ai text classifier tools, how businesses can exploit these tools for their benefit, and why it is imperative to opt for an ai content checker free proposal for content verification processes.
Significance of AI Detection in Content Creation
Marketing, journalism, and scholarly writing are all heavily reliant on content creation. Widespread availability of AI tools such as zero chat gpt and zero chat gpt also brings serious concerns about plagiarism and authenticity. Businesses, educators, and content creators must be vigilant because whether the content being produced or used is human-generated can have serious consequences on trust, credibility, and SEO rankings.
The capacity to recognize AI-written text can impact multiple sectors. Take, for instance, a particular university that depends on AI-generated essays. Such an arrangement can lead to academic dishonesty and deteriorate the essence of learning. Universities and colleges do need to worry about plagiarism, whereas companies that depend on content marketing need to make sure that the communication is relevant to their audience and is not AI-written.
How Detector AI Helps In Finding AI-Generated Content
AI detection tools such as detector ai, are developed solely to spot the common words in AI-generated texts. They operate by checking the choice of words and the combination of phrases used in the text, as well as other specific features associated with a prepared work to determine if it was written by an AI or a human.
For example, the ai text classifier applies machine learning methods to distinguish AI content from human-created content. This is achieved by cross-referencing a given text to extensive libraries of works authored by humans and AI-assisted writing tools. Now the results can be used to identify the text as human written or AI generated.
Implementing a detect ai tool enables businesses to effortlessly monitor for the presence of generative AI in their content, increasing productivity. This is particularly beneficial for large businesses where content is always being generated like for instance, marketing, e-commerce, and even social media businesses.
Advantages of AI Detection for Companies
Increased Content Authenticity
When dealing with clients, content authenticity plays a pivotal role in earning the trust of customers. AI detection tools like the detector ai can ensure that any content generated is consistent with the brand’s voice and accurately represents business values and quality standards. By making sure that only human-generated content is published, businesses can foster a deeper connection with their audience.
Better SEO
In recent years, high-quality original content has become more and more important for search engines like Google. Websites with a lot of AI content are likely to be flagged and banned because those types of content are crawler detectable. An ai text classifier will help companies mitigate the SEO penalties resulting from such content by ensuring the documents prepared are original and follow the relevant SEO guidelines.
Increased Customer Interactions.
Communication or interaction with the customers depends on human factors such as emotions and feelings. Content produced by artificial intelligence lacks nuance that connects with its audience. Businesses can mitigate automaton-driven customer interactions and ensure that all communication is engaging and personal by spotting AI-written content. This ensures that all automated text is excluded from customer interactions.
The Significance of AI Checkers Within Content Creation
For marketers, writers, and content creators, an AI Content Checker can serve as a great aid to eliminate the possibility of plagiarism in the content received or produced. These tools are particularly handy for freelancers who want to use their content for multiple platforms for an easy check. Businesses, on the other hand, often worry that the content they buy is not written by a person and is instead produced by a non-thinking AI software which leads to duplicate content. While that is the worry, AI Content Checkers can serve as a solution to content quality and plagiarism problems.
In addition, freelancers often find themselves in situations where clients require their work to be verified, so they depend on these tools to ensure originality. Most projects out there that require content creation demand that the freelancing writers maintain a certain level of quality to which content creation should not have to be a burden.
Significance of Personal Involvement in Developing Content
Although AI instruments help in content creation greatly, they cannot address the tonality and emotional depth that human-written frameworks capture. Employing a detect ai solution makes it possible for business communication to retain a semblance of personalization that is crucial in every business format.
Human writers are able to bring a level of personalization to content creation that AI systems cannot. He or she fuses emotion and intention into the write-up to evoke a desired effect, something AI is notoriously poor at. This is the primary reason as to why a hybrid approach relying on ai generated and human crafted frameworks is necessary, with later being locator using detector ai solutions.
Obstacles in AI Content Recognition
Although AI detection solutions are always evolving, they still remain far from perfection. For one, every human language has distinct cadences, clauses and phrases, making it incredibly difficult for detection tools to tell whether content is produced by humans or AI. Furthermore, the progress of AI technology makes it even more essential to develop effective ai text classifier systems that can take advantage of novel approaches.
One of the problems is that some detection tools are expensive which is a problem for smaller companies and individual content creators. This is the reason why clients seek out ai checker free options. It is helpful for people who are trying to test AI generated content for the first time.
Future of AI Detection
With AI technology advancing, it is reasonable to assume that their corresponding detection tools will follow suit. Detection AI tools will likely utilize more sophisticated models that account for more nuances and differences between human and artificial text. This would allow emerging these AI detection tools to be more accurate, quicker, while also becoming available to a plethora of users.
The responsibility of ethical content creation will be more prominent as businesses shift towards AI content generation. Companies may see improved AI detectors as yet another cost but for easily safeguarding the integrity content.
