29. A kiss to the back of the hand (au where everything happens exactly the same. Except Mayday didn't really die. Echo finds him with the rest of the clones on Tantis.)

Crosshair had been a marksman most his life. That may not be a long time compared to most humans, but it was all he had to fall back on for that short time.

Losing his hand had brought clarity to the need to diversify his skill set, but he hadn't wanted to give up shooting. There was a peace to sniping that he craved. The planning, the wait for the perfect moment- anticipation, and the pride in a successful hit. He only found such satisfaction with one other.

He glanced up from cleaning his rifle to find the man who swept back into his life like a hurricane. Mayday was in his spot, an old chair salvaged from a ship and parked unceremoniously in Crosshair's work area. The fact Mayday had a regular spot still stole his breath some days.

He didn't deserve all the luck that had fallen in his lap. Omega insisting on saving him as well, the Bad Batch taking him back, and now Mayday. Yes there had been bad luck too. His hand had been a loss, but not as great as Tech...

He looked back to the rifle, fine tuning it to adjust to him. The repetition could have been a black spot, a chance for his mind to spiral and focus on the bad even as the sun shown brightly through the window. But it isn't. Instead he finds the peace he'd earned on Tantis.

Only for a few minutes, though. The chair across from his worktable creaks and a shadow moved around to shift beside him. Crosshair points to the spanner across the table, new metal prosthesis catching the evening hues as night settles around them.

Mayday grabs the spanner and places it next to the rifle. As Crosshair murmurs an irritated thanks, he intercepts the hand moving to pick it up. Warm, living flesh kisses the back of the cold metal just as lovingly as if it was real human skin.

"You're welcome."

One may interpret Crosshair and Mayday’s relationship as friendship that flared up in dire circumstances, brotherly bonding, or desperate love. But most agree, I think, that Mayday was amazing, even too perfect a person sometimes.

In my headcanon, Crosshair, during his ordeal at Tantiss base, started having doubts about whether he really met this perfect person or if it was a figment of his imagination, a delusion caused by the exhaustion and exposure to extreme cold. On his return to Barton IV, he almost doesn't expect to find any traces of Commander Mayday ever existing.

But he finds them.

Crosshair touched the skin of Mayday's back, still chillingly cold to the touch despite the warmth of their embrace and the fact that they've been huddled together inside for hours, the lantern at Mayday's back doing nothing but illuminating long healed scars and blooming bruises from being trapped underneath the avalanche.

Got a sad though for an au Oni and I had written. In #melnagaisma we end it at a point where it in the air what's going to happen to mer Cross, but I was thinking about if they had been able to get Crosshair back to the ocean and then something happened to Tech. How maybe Crooshair would eventually run into a mer Mayday.

It'd be a long courtship, with Mayday slowly wooing a Crosshair who is still very much in love with the human who saved him. Helping him start to grieve and accept the loss of the person he thought would be his mate.

"He is- was... my everything."

"I have my share of ghosts too. I can live with sharing your heart with his ghost."

Commander Mayday appreciation! He said that respect is something to be earned and he is so right. This man and his wisdom and experience is absolutely one of the underrated clones ✨ He massively paved the way for Crosshair‘s character development.

This is my 7th clone drawing and this time I tried to get a bit more the dark and glowy atmosphere of the scene. What do you think about it? Let me know! 🫶🏼

Crosshair, Wolffe & Dogma: Not understanding any of it. Don’t know what you’re doing, not sure that they like it, 3/10 do not recommend.
