your posting about the disparity in portrayals of cobra kai and miyagi do reminds of the vibes of how redditors and those even here say that anybody who LIKES sam must be privileged rich women, or even posts preaching daniel was the true bigot even as a kid who provoked everyone and fought hate with hate and DESERVED to be beat for spraying johnny. the goalposts for the good kind of poor kid/rich kids move a lot with the show and the fan reactions.
The Karate Kid is about a hotheaded boy who, through respect for his elders and hard work, wins the respect of his peers and causes them to choose a less aggressive path for themselves as well -
And this bothers people!
It tells you a lot about what we value as a society, hm? And apparently it's violence in boys, and yes, always looking away from the consequences. Miyagi interfered because these boys were very close to beating Daniel to death. Something they may have been too young to recognise (though Bobby didn't let himself get blinded), but he would have recognised from his time at war. And in Cobra Kai, I had such mad respect for them showing the natural consequences of that No Mercy attitude - Miguel getting seriously, almost irreversibly hurt.
Except, no - we don't want to face that. The Cobras do not deserve to be called out on nearly killing another boy, because he, well, he deserved it 😒 We can't accept that this is bad behaviour! Because we don't want it to be! And violence ultimately does not have consequences for Miguel because we don't want it to! Miracle spinal injury cure it is!
As for Sam, who has no redeeming qualities in the narrative because she doesn't face any hardship, well, of course the default opinion is dislike. She's a white teenage girl. What good can she possibly do? And what is clever about Cobra Kai is that Sam knows this in-universe. She can't do any good, but she can do plenty wrong: she's not supposed to be too smart, so she ditches Aisha, who is her best friend but not white and not girly pretty. She can't be as hard as Yasmine or as soft as Moon, or she will be deemed a bitch or laughing stock. She's a rich white girl so she has to date a jock, cue Parker. She can't do karate, who does karate? She can't be sexually available, she'll be punished, but she also can't not be, she'll be punished. And then Miguel defends her honor, so she has to be with him, he's earned her.
She knows she'll be basic if she follows the rules but she's terrified of not doing that. And well, with reason, cue Reddit. She picks out the girliest, pinkest Prom dress that looks absolutely hideous, but at least showcases how she is still a good girl, and not a psycho karate bitch -
And then there's Tory, who so unapologetically is a psycho karate bitch it makes her blood boil. She's so angry that Tory gets away with it that yes, it turns her into a catty bitch - the only aggression she's allowed - until Tory gives her permission to let it all out. But for Chrissakes, she's punished for being a catty bitch by nearly getting murdered twice. But that too is justified to us. Daniel wasn't allowed to be a whimp and she's not allowed to be a bitch, or anything but what she is and even if she's just a basic white girl, following the script to the letter, it'll never be enough.
Makes you appreciate how insanely brave Ali Mills is. She goes for the poor whimp. She's unapologetically into soccer. She defies her parents in rejecting Johnny. She drives Daniel's car, and anyone who dares comment can kiss her ass. Sam wishes she was as brave! But as we can see, Sam is so perceptive to what other people demand from her that she doesn't know who she is anymore. Yes, karate gives her an outlet - but she still hasn't figured out she isn't into Miguel, or Robby, or perhaps any guy. Because forget getting hate for being basic... imagine the hate for being gay!
But who cares, right? She's just a basic teenage white girl, even though that's all she's allowed to be...
And who else would care to think about what that's like for two seconds, but indeed other basic white girls?

What is the importance of family in each kingdom
Glimmerier
Family is the most important institution in Glimmerier. People arent punished by the law for abandoning/leaving their families, but might be socially. In Glimmerier if you serve a family that is the highest honor.
Elvenwick
Family is not seen as too important. Many people are self orientated so in some ways that manifests in being very family orientated (for legacy) and for others it manifests in growing on your own independent of family
Amphinis
Family’s importance depends on the community. In general, the value of family is not too high or too low. This is a huge importance placed in a community family where groups of individuals work together to ensure the success of the children. But marriage isnt a thing and last name legacy too.
Idealps
Family is pretty important, your family determines what happens in your life. Family names and all of that stuff is important, but many families are dysfunctional and not close.

OK, OK SO I WAS JUST THINking
In my religion, we don't use our Gods' names to swear or cuss, because mentioning our Gods by name usually equates to invoking or summoning them. So if I said "FUCKING [NAME]" or "[Name], [Name], [Name]" (ala "Mary, Jesus & Joseph" in frustration, exasperation, exaltation or surprise, it's the equivalent of butt-dialing them while shouting.
BUT in my native language, there isn't a direct translation of "JFC", because most of it predates Jesus (yk when Cleopatra & Ceaser were having their Thing & Brutus was sharpening his knife??? We were speaking our language then, and for the most part, it hasn't really changed since) & the modern additions to it just. Did not like him, I guess? Like, we can incorporate his name into stuff, but it's a lot of effort when we have other stuff we can say instead. WHICH IS WHEN I REALISED that instead of cursing / cussing a God (ala saying their name in vane), we have 2 main options: either repeat the negative / positive of the statement, which is literally translated as you saying "No, NO, you did NOT say that you DID NOT" / "Yes, YES, you DID JUST say that YOU DID" but which is understood as the equivalent of "oh jfc" with a sigh / "jfc" with a small laugh, OR we can just use the name of the person we're talking to (it gets more complicated if you're talking to 1 person but about another) and you literally say "Do NOT, DO NOT say that, Mark" / "Mark, say that, SAY THAT" but is understood as the equivalent of "jfc!" / "jfc!"
And it just... idk, it got me thinking. Is there sayings / phrases the equivalent of "Jesus FUCKING Christ" in reference to Allah / any other Gods, or is that considered butt-dialing them, or is it like slapping a but of paper to your back which reads "SMITE ME" ??????? And if there ISN'T an acceptable name in your religion to use in this context, what's your native language's equivalent??? Do they cross over (ie: JFC is a mostly western saying, and the west is culturally Christian, AND predominantly* Anglo-sized & English-speaking)???? Or are they totally separate????
*I know not every single person in every single country speaks English, but chances are if you're wandering around Europe or the Americas, you'll find someone who can partially understand English SOONER / EASIER than you will if you're outside of Europe / Americas.
*There's also the fact we can more or less guess at some words because even though the languages are different, they overlap enough that we can recognise "oh, that word looks / sounds kinda like [word]" and use that as a starting point for finding translation help. Whereas if we go East or South (or some areas to the North), we don't have that.

Leadership and Culture: Lessons from Chick-fil-A’s Success Story 💡
In the world of business, few companies have managed to achieve the level of success and brand loyalty that Chick-fil-A enjoys. A key factor in this success is the company’s strong culture and leadership, which have been carefully cultivated over decades. In a recent episode of "Right About Now with Ryan Alford," Steve Robinson, the former Chief Marketing Officer of Chick-fil-A, shared his experiences and insights on how leadership and culture play a pivotal role in building a successful brand. Let’s explore the leadership lessons we can learn from Chick-fil-A’s journey.
The Role of Leadership in Defining Culture:
Steve Robinson’s journey with Chick-fil-A is a testament to the importance of leadership in defining and nurturing a company’s culture. When Robinson joined Chick-fil-A in 1981, the company was still finding its footing in the fast-food industry. However, under the leadership of founder Truett Cathy and COO Jimmy Collins, Chick-fil-A focused on building a strong cultural foundation that would set it apart from its competitors.
One of the first steps in this process was defining the company’s purpose. This was not just about setting financial goals, but about understanding why the business existed in the first place. Chick-fil-A’s purpose statement—“To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A”—became the guiding principle for every decision the company made.
Robinson emphasizes that this clarity of purpose was crucial in creating a culture where employees were not just workers, but stewards of the brand. This mindset was instilled from the top down, with leadership playing a key role in cultivating an environment where the company’s values were lived out every day.
Empowering Employees through Clear Values:
A significant part of Chick-fil-A’s success can be attributed to its commitment to clear and consistent values. Robinson explains that Chick-fil-A’s leadership team identified six core values that would guide the company’s decisions: stewardship, fun, integrity, honesty, excellence, and talent. These values were not just theoretical concepts; they were practical guidelines that influenced how the company operated on a daily basis.
By establishing these non-negotiables, Chick-fil-A created a culture where employees were empowered to make decisions that aligned with the company’s mission. This empowerment was crucial in creating a consistent brand experience across all locations, as employees at every level knew what was expected of them and were trusted to deliver on those expectations.
This approach also extended to the company’s unique operator model, where independent contractors, known as operators, were given the responsibility of running individual Chick-fil-A restaurants. This model ensured that each restaurant was led by someone who was deeply invested in the success of the business and committed to upholding the company’s values.
Long-Term Focus and the Power of Patience:
One of the key lessons Robinson shares is the importance of taking a long-term approach to business. In an industry that often prioritizes short-term gains and quick fixes, Chick-fil-A has consistently focused on building a brand that will stand the test of time. This long-term focus is evident in everything from their decision to close on Sundays to their commitment to empowering operators and employees.
Robinson explains that this long-term focus is deeply rooted in the company’s purpose and values. By prioritizing stewardship and customer experience over immediate profits, Chick-fil-A has been able to build a brand that is not only profitable but also sustainable. This approach requires patience and a willingness to invest in the future, rather than chasing short-term gains.
Leadership as a Servant Role:
Another crucial aspect of Chick-fil-A’s culture is the concept of servant leadership. This philosophy, which is deeply embedded in the company’s culture, emphasizes the importance of leaders serving their employees and customers, rather than the other way around. Robinson explains that this approach is inspired by biblical principles and reflects Truett Cathy’s belief that leadership is about serving others and creating a positive impact.
This servant leadership mindset is reflected in everything from the company’s interactions with customers to the way they empower operators and employees. By focusing on serving others, Chick-fil-A has been able to create a culture of trust and respect, where employees feel valued and customers feel appreciated.
Conclusion:
The leadership lessons shared by Steve Robinson offer valuable insights for anyone looking to build a successful and sustainable brand. By focusing on purpose, values, and servant leadership, Chick-fil-A has created a culture that is the foundation of its success. As Robinson’s story shows, true leadership is not just about making decisions—it’s about creating an environment where others can thrive and succeed.
As businesses continue to navigate the challenges of the modern marketplace, these lessons from Chick-fil-A’s journey serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of culture and leadership in building a brand that stands the test of time.

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

Being in America is super fun because you get to see Trump going up against Biden in a presidential election with both of them being dogshit options, mass protests against what should very obviously be seen as an injustice that spits in the face of what you were told your country stands for, except the government disagrees, using the power of the militarized state to brutalize protestors, all the while people spread malicious lies regularly with millions believing their every word(a lot of it being thanks to some rich freak on Twitter). Also, the economy is doing pretty damn poor and you see media sources tell you to sacrifice your well-being all while the ultra rich get richer and richer.
And then after you're done with 2020, you get to do it again four years later

THE WEST IS FALLING
First of a four part series looking at ‘The State of the West’. We may not like it but our culture is changing dramatically. The evidence is clear. Over the past few days thousands of people throughout the West have marched in support of Palestinians with the cry of ‘Palestine free, from the river to the sea’, a call for another Holocaust, the extermination of the Jewish people. Really fucked up actually that the "you are valid" culture which, usefulness and uh, validity thereof aside, was intended to provide some some perspective for people who may have been blamed for harmless things they could not control morphed into "if strangers on the internet do not constantly tell me I'm good and perfect they are the oppressor" and "even constructively and gently telling me that I hold some power and responsibility to seek a better situation is an unspeakably cruel act."
