The S2 Engine: building a better Hitbox
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The S2 Engine is a leverless controller layout intended to allow you to play a wider variety of games with arcade style controls. A revision of the S2 Drive, which was designed with retro style games in mind, it combines WASD style directional controls with the spacebar style jump button popularized by the Hitbox.
The goal here was to keep a “home row” position for your hands, with the consideration that it's much faster and more comfortable to close your fingers than to extend them.
Two thumb buttons allow easy access to the trigger buttons, with oversized pinky buttons for auxiliary functions. This has the advantage of allowing both thumbs to access the jump button, with the thumb buttons replacing the hard to reach pinky column, making it easier to hit or hold with other buttons.
youtube
The layout gives you the advantages of a regular leverless layout for fighting games, with the benefit of more intuitive navigation in menus, 2D action games and even 3D space. Combined with a remappable controller firmware, it allows a wider range of applications than both traditional leverless and arcade stick layouts.
I have two recommended button mappings, one more in line with the traditional fightstick layout, and a more universal one suited to all kinds of games.
Tumblr media
The first remaps the third column from R1 and R2 to both shoulder buttons, with L1 on the top and R1 on the bottom. This allows easier navigation through menu tabs, instead of the reversed left and right positions of the shoulder buttons on a traditional layout.
Tumblr media
The second puts most of the face buttons on the same row, aligning them in a mirrored WASD position on the other side of the buttons, with the shoulder buttons flanking them. Square, cross, and circle are on the bottom row, with triangle above the cross button, and L1 and R1 to the side of the triangle button. Games commonly focus their main actions on the square, cross and circle buttons, so this allows you to access most of them at the same time without finger movement. The positioning of the L1 and R1 buttons allow more intuitive menu navigation, and directional actions.
Both trigger buttons are positioned on the thumb buttons to the side of the large jump button, with the up button duplicated in the WASD cluster, and the L3 and R3 flank the direction and action buttons.
LAYOUT DEMONSTRATIONS
Here's some example layouts as a demonstration.
Tumblr media
For Street Fighter 6 this allows you to play with both classic and modern controls. On classic you get the usual 6 button layout on top, with the shortcuts for Drive Parry, Drive Impact or throw on the thumb or pinky buttons. You can even forego one of the up buttons to turn either into another macro. Personally, I use the right pinky for Drive Impact and the right thumb for parry, with throw and character specific functions on the remaining two.
Tumblr media
On Modern this layout makes it easier to use the assist feature by mapping it to a thumb button, allowing the rest of your fingers to rest on top with the light, medium and heavy buttons, with some flexibility on where you'd like the special and shortcut buttons to be.
Tumblr media
For Guilty Gear Strive I like to map the thumb buttons to dash and roman cancel, to get easy drift RC. I always found it hard to integrate the dash button in the main six button cluster, and this mimics the natural action of left trigger right trigger that I'm used to on controller.
Tumblr media
For games with a block button the thumb buttons are a lifesaver. In Mortal Kombat, the top buttons handle the four attacks, throw and stance flip, while the thumb buttons allow me to hold block and call assists. MK always felt like it didn't have a good solution on a standard arcade layout. Either the attack buttons get stuck in the middle, or shoved to one side with the others requiring you to stretch to use all of them.
Tumblr media
In Soulcalibur I keep the block button in the main cluster since I default to using the button combos instead of shortcuts, but I do like keeping the thumb buttons ready for stance macros and easy supers.
Tumblr media
In Tekken 8 I use the the top 6 buttons for the standard 4 attacks and multibuttons shortcuts, with Rage on the thumb button, Heat on the right pinky and the left pinky for awkward button combinations.
Tumblr media
How about something less conventional? Here's Gundam Versus. Typically you play this on an arcade stick since it only uses 8 directionals and a behind the back camera. The WASD cluster here makes it more natural and even lets you do moves like dashes and blocking (down to up) faster. Again, you can give up the larger UP button and use it for communication commands, or burst.
Tumblr media
And here's Virtual-On. This makes it easier to hit the turbo modifiers and attack buttons together and perform fast jump cancels. You can even emulate the twin stick setup of the arcades with it. Which is also useful if you want to play some 8 way twin stick shooters.
If you're running GP2040CE you can even use it for 3D action games. A lot of action games don't rely on analog inputs, only differentiating between 8 directions and rarely needing to walk, and often allow you to get away with centering the camera behind the back with a button instead of messing with the right stick. Simply set the directions to the left analog stick, and set the bottom jump button to a dpad modifier so you can  access those functions.
This works great in PS2 era action games like Nightshade, which requires you to quickly chain movement and attacks, or older Devil May Cry games, where it's much easier to perform precise inputs like enemy step attacks.
Tumblr media
On my personal controllers, I've even added aux ports that allow me to plug in pedals, to go full pianist style, getting quicker reactions for shortcuts like Drive Impact, or adding modifiers to control the camera.
And of course, since it was designed with retro games in mind it works great for that, easily adapting to the six button layouts of the Genesis, Saturn and arcade games, and allowing you to play SNES games that rely on the shoulder buttons much easier.
HOW DO I BUILD ONE?
So how do you get this layout? For my part, I've mostly been creating prototypes for this layout by hand, with a power drill and step bit. But for my final build I went to Eternal Rival with my custom layout, and other case builders such as Jonyfraze, and AllFightSticks can also do custom layouts.
I originally finished this layout over a year ago, before Street Fighter 6, and those were kind of your only options for thumb buttons. Since then the leverless controller scene has blown up with different takes, and you've got quite a few options for something similar.
Tumblr media
I personally like Mavercade's KeebBrawler-04MX, with its pill shaped buttons and split layout, but they also have a Keebfighter line with some similar layouts.
Tumblr media
The Zenpad Duel has a split dual thumb button layout, and Attachon and Rush box have layouts with pinky and thumb buttons. Jonyfraze offers the 6GAWD for both leverless and fightstick builds. Hell, you could even go for something like a box style controller for Smash.
Tumblr media
I'm less impressed with the offerings from companies like Haute42, which seem to just staple buttons onto the existing layout with no consideration for access or aesthetics, but they are an option for those looking for a cheap way to test a thumb button layout.
Whatever way you choose to go, it's undeniable that we're in an era of rapid controller innovation, with tons of different philosophies on how to build better controllers, and fresh ideas coming out all the time. The S2 Engine is what works best for me, but with so many options out there now, it'd be a waste to not experiment and find your personal favorite.

Rev up your engines, it’s time to…
🏁 Race for the Cookie Cup! 🏁
Tumblr media
(More below the cut)
🫐Event Summary🍒
You, Grim, Ace, and Deuce decide to visit a new arcade that recently opened up in the town not far from NRC. There, you meet up with Ruggie, Epel, Silver, and Idia, who have all taken interest in a specific game in the corner of the arcade. The game is called Sugar Rush! Since there's two arcade machines, Ace challenges Deuce to one round of the game, and whoever loses must pay for the other's lunch. Deuce unsurprisingly accepts, and they begin their match. Midway through their match, however, the game suddenly glitches! You and the gang all think the game is broken until a flash of light comes from the arcade machines. Next thing you know, all 8 of you are somehow inside of the racing game, Sugar Rush!
To escape this sweet nightmare, you must win the next grand prix and obtain the Cookie Cup! But, uh oh. Ace and Deuce are having a bit of a squabble. It seems like you guys are going to have to split into two separate teams!
For this grand prix, Deuce will be accompanied by Silver and Idia as...
Team Bluepuff!
And Ace will be accompanied by Ruggie and Epel as...
Team Redpop!
Which team will you choose?
🏁Rules🏁
Everyone is allowed to race! Whether it's your OCs, yuusonas, or, heck, even rope your favorite canon NRC/RSA student into this mess! Everyone is welcome to participate in the mess that Ace and Deuce started.
You can participate in this event by making custom cards, general fanart, fanfics, whatever! Just no NSFW, please. This is a PG racing game!
If you decide to make anything for this event, please tag me and use #🍪rftcc. I'd love to see what you make!
And finally, this event has no deadline, so feel free to participate whenever!
🏁Outfits and Carts🏁
Since you will be racing, make sure your outfit is fit for the job! Make sure your character has a jersey, gloves, and a sweet theme!
For your character's theme, make sure it is based off of some sort of candy or sweet treat! The character must also have a matching cart, as well (if you're drawing them with one, that is). Try to stay away from actual candy brands, though! We wouldn't want a lawsuit on our hands!
The characters listed in the summary have their own cards and outfits! I listed them below so you don't accidentally copy their theme.
SSR Deuce (Blueberry Pie)
SSR Ace (Cherry Pie)
SR Ruggie and Epel (Donuts and bubblegum)
SR/R Idia and Silver (Slushies and marshmallows)
Also! If you're making a card, you may use the blank cards below!

Bev was all business when it came to teaching you the ropes. She didn’t waste time with pleasantries or sugarcoat anything—just walked you through each task with the kind of efficiency that came from years of experience. You appreciated it. Your own no-nonsense demeanour finally felt like an asset here, and you caught on quickly, picking up on the flow of the bar, the regulars, and how to deal with the occasional drunk who needed a firmer hand.
“Clean the tables as soon as they’re done. Don’t let things pile up, or it’ll turn into a mess by the end of the night,” Bev instructed, her voice sharp but not unkind. “And don’t be afraid to tell ‘em off if they get too handsy. Most of ‘em know better, but some need a reminder.”
You nodded, wordlessly falling into step with her, wiping down the counters and clearing the tables with practised efficiency. The older drunks tried their best to charm you, but you shut them down with a cool look or a short, clipped response. After a while, they got the hint and left you alone. It was strangely satisfying, the way your coldness seemed to ward off unwanted attention without much effort.
By the time the last of the customers had staggered out and the bar was quiet again, you and Bev had already developed a silent rhythm. You worked well together, neither of you wasting breath on unnecessary chatter as you cleaned and prepared to close shop for the night.
“Not bad for your first night,” Bev said as she locked up. She gave you a sideways glance, clearly impressed. “Most don’t catch on that fast.”
You shrugged, brushing it off. “Just used to working with my hands.”
Bev smirked but didn’t push for more. Instead, she motioned toward the car parked out front. “C’mon. I’ll drive you to the trailer park, show you your new place.”
You followed her to the car, sliding into the passenger seat as she started the engine. The ride was quiet at first, the dark streets of Hawkins passing by in a blur as you settled into the silence. It wasn’t until you neared the outskirts of town that Bev broke the stillness.
“Like I said, it’s a dump, but it’s yours if you want it. No one’ll bother you there. Least, not usually.” She said, her tone casual but with a hint of warning.
You nodded, grateful for the offer regardless of the condition. “I’m not picky. Anything’s better than a motel.”
Bev snorted, her gaze to the road. “That’s what I figured.”
As she pulled into the trailer park, the wear and tear on the place became more apparent. Rusting trailers and houses, overgrown yards, and the occasional busted lawn chair littered the small plots of land. It was clear that Forest Hills had seen better days.
“We’re in the back,” Bev explained, steering the truck down a dirt path toward the far edge of the park. “Got a couple of neighbours you should know about. One’s a family of two that just moved in not too long ago—the Mayfields.”
You glanced out the window as the truck slowed in front of a small, run-down trailer at the very end of the park. Bev cut the engine and turned to you, her expression serious.
“Now, the mom—Susan, I think—is a bit of a bitch,” Bev said bluntly, leaning back in her seat. “Drunk most of the time, and not exactly neighbourly. And the daughter….well, she’s a grump. Keeps to herself mostly.”
You raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything, letting Bev continue.
“They ended up here after some nasty business a couple months back. Heard about it on the news—something to do with her brother, Billy. Kid died in that fire at Starcourt Mall. The dad, Neil, skipped out after that. Left the two of them in the dirt.”
Bev shook her head, clearly not fond of the situation. “Ain’t my business, but they’ve had it rough. That’s probably why they’re basically recluses now. Can’t say I blame them.”
You absorbed the information in silence, trying not to let it weigh on you too much.
Bev grabbed a set of keys from the glovebox and handed them to you. “Here you go. The trailer’s yours as long as you’re stayin’.”
You took the keys, genuinely grateful for the offer. “Thanks, Bev. Really.”
She shrugged, already getting out of the truck. “Don’t mention it. Just make sure you show up for your shifts, and we’ll call it even.”
You followed her out, taking in the sight of your new home. The trailer was small and worn down, the white paint chipped and faded, but as Bev had promised, it had electricity, and the lights flickered on as she unlocked the door. Inside was just as basic as you’d expected—a tiny kitchenette, a couch that had seen better days, and a bed in the back room that didn’t look particularly inviting, but it would do.
Bev gave the place a quick once-over before turning back to you. “Like I said, it’s not much. But you’ll get by.”
You nodded, tired but thankful. “It’s perfect.”
Bev smirked, giving you a light pat on the back as she turned to leave. “Good. Now get some rest. You’ve got work tomorrow.”
As she drove off, you stood in the quiet of the trailer park, looking around at your new surroundings. It wasn’t glamorous, and it wasn’t what you had planned when you set out on the road, but for now, it was enough.
You were going to be okay here. Or so you hoped.
.
.
Friday, February 21 1986, Hawkins, Indiana
You woke up cramped, the stiff mattress doing nothing to ease the knots in your back. The sun was just beginning to filter through the dusty blinds of your trailer. It was early—too early for the soreness you felt to set in—but here you were, aching and hungry.
The quiet of the morning was suddenly broken by the distant rumble of a car peeling off in the distance, loud enough to wake you up fully. Probably one of the neighbours getting an early start, you thought. The sound echoed in the empty trailer park, amplifying the fact that it was mostly deserted, void of any real life or movement.
With a sigh, you pushed yourself off the bed and gathered up your things, deciding a lukewarm shower was better than none. The water sputtered to life, barely warm enough to be considered comfortable, but it did the job. You washed up quickly, trying not to think too much about how dingy the bathroom was or how much colder the water got as the minutes ticked by.
Once you were dressed and ready, you stepped outside, squinting against the morning light. Aside from a few scattered, beat-up trailers, there wasn’t much sign of anyone around. It was a far cry from anywhere bustling or lively, but for now, it was home.
With your stomach growling, you decided to head into town for a cheap bite to eat. The walk wasn’t long, and the streets of Hawkins had a sleepy, almost lazy quality to them in the early hours of the day. Small-town folks were going about their business, most of them shooting curious glances your way as you passed by. You weren’t surprised—new faces probably didn’t pop up often in places like this.
At the diner, you managed to get a basic meal without spending too much, though you couldn’t help but notice how people stared at you more openly now. A few of them even asked blunt questions.
“Where’d you come from, huh? Don’t see many strangers ‘round here.”
You shrugged off their nosiness with a clipped response, keeping to yourself as you finished up your food. It was easier that way—no need to get drawn into small-town gossip or idle chatter. You paid and left as soon as you could, slipping out onto the street with the hope of finding something else to occupy your time.
You stopped by a nearby convenience store, buying a few basics to take back to the trailer and some smaller snacks. The most you could afford for now was some dingy looking granola bars, but they would do.
That’s when you stumbled across the arcade.
It was clearly empty—being a school day, the place was deserted. Perfect. You stepped inside, the smell of dust and electronics filling your senses as you walked past rows of machines. No one was taking care of the front, and the silence was almost comforting, broken only by the occasional beep and whirr from the arcade games still running on autopilot.
You wandered for a moment before finding an open machine, the screen flashing the high scores in bold letters. "MADMAX" stood out at the top, the name written across every leaderboard for the highest scores.
Feeling a little adventurous, you slid a coin into the slot.
You focused on the game, your fingers working quickly over the buttons as you tried to beat the high score. It was easy to lose yourself in the rhythm of the game, each level getting harder, each challenge pushing you to react faster. Soon enough, the score began to climb, creeping closer to "MADMAX."
For a moment, you wondered about Max—whoever they were. Maybe a local kid, probably with more skill and time on their hands than you. Still, the challenge was there, and you weren’t about to back down.
Opting to munch on a granola bar, you kept one hand on the controls, eyes focused on the screen as you chipped away at the game. You were close—so close to beating "MADMAX." The arcade was still quiet, just the hum of the machines and the sound of buttons being pressed, when the door suddenly swung open.
“Keith! You here? I need some change, man!” A guy’s voice echoed through the place.
You didn’t look up at first, too absorbed in the game to care about whoever was barging in. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw him freeze, staring as if he’d just walked into the wrong room.
You spared him a glance, raising an eyebrow when his eyes stayed locked on you. He looked about your age, classically handsome, and with an expression that flickered between confused and intrigued.
“Uh…” He cleared his throat awkwardly, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Hey, uh… I’m Steve.” His voice had that confident tone, like he was used to being smooth, but there was something off about it—like you’d caught him off guard. You didn’t care enough to ask why.
Without missing a beat, you nodded. “Cool. Saw no one when I walked in. Maybe check the back?”
You took another bite of your granola bar, dismissing him with a casual shrug as you turned your attention back to the game. Steve stood there for a second longer, still staring.
But you didn’t give him the time of day. You had a high score to beat, and that was a hell of a lot more interesting than whatever he was going through. You crunched on the last bit of the granola bar, wiped your fingers on your jeans, and continued playing, the rhythmic tapping of the buttons filling the awkward silence.
Steve muttered something under his breath, glanced toward the back of the shop, and finally wandered off to check for Keith. You barely noticed him leave.
You kept playing, fingers moving fluidly over the buttons. Out of the corner of your eye, though, you noticed movement outside the arcade's window. The same guy—Steve—was back, but this time, he wasn’t alone. He stood next to a girl who also looked your age, with dirty blond hair pulled back into a stumpy ponytail. She had her arms crossed, looking at him like he’d just said something completely ridiculous.
He pointed inside, gesturing toward you, talking animatedly while the girl shot him an incredulous look. For a second, you thought you caught her mouthing, “Really?” as if questioning his sanity. Then, just as she started to roll her eyes, she glanced in your direction—and froze. Her expression flipped from disbelief to something more like excitement, or maybe awe, as she turned back to Steve with wide eyes.
The two exchanged a look, like they’d just stumbled upon something or someone way out of the ordinary. You could tell by the matching vests they were wearing—probably working at the video rental place next door—that they weren’t just hanging out.
You kept playing, pretending you hadn’t noticed them. But when their whispering turned to shuffling and nervous glances, it was hard to ignore. They weren’t exactly being subtle. Eventually, you couldn’t help but look directly at them.
The second they realised you were watching, they scrambled. The girl jabbed Steve in the side, and in their haste to turn around, they ran right into each other. Steve stumbled back, almost falling over, while the girl just facepalmed in exasperation.
They both awkwardly stumbled away from the window, tripping over themselves and disappearing from sight, leaving you alone once again. You blinked, shook your head slightly, and refocused on the screen in front of you.
Weirdos.
By the time you’d had enough of the arcade—your fingers starting to cramp, and the thrill of high scores wearing thin—you decided to head back to your temporary home. The sun was higher in the sky now, casting long shadows across the nearly deserted trailer park as you approached. The air was thick with that quiet stillness you’d come to expect from the place, only broken by the occasional distant sound of a car rumbling by.
Just as you reached your trailer, you spotted movement to your right. A red-haired girl, around thirteen or so, was riding a skateboard across the cracked pavement, her brows furrowed. She skidded to a stop just before bumping into you, looking up with that same deep-set frown. Judging by the description Bev had given you, this was most probably the girl from next door.
Feeling a flicker of something familiar, maybe even sympathy, you decided to introduce yourself. "Hey," you said casually. "I’m your new neighbour. Bev mentioned you might be around. What’s your name?"
She studied you for a moment, her expression guarded. "Max," she finally said, her voice flat, clearly not in the mood for much conversation.
You gave a short nod, but couldn’t help the smirk that tugged at your lips. "Guess that explains the high score at the arcade. ‘MADMAX,’ right?"
Her frown faltered for a second, surprise flashing across her face. "You beat my score?"
"Yep," you replied with a small shrug. "Just did it today, actually. Figured I’d put the initials ‘WON’ up there, you know, for the hell of it."
For the first time, Max’s lips quirked up in a smile, the gloom lifting from her expression for just a moment. She glanced down, adjusting her grip on the skateboard, clearly not used to people surprising her like that. "Huh," she muttered, her tone softer, almost like she wasn’t sure what to do with this new information.
But just as quickly as the smile appeared, it faded. Max shifted on her board, her gaze darting back toward her trailer. "Anyway… I should probably go," she said, the weight returning to her voice.
"Yeah," you nodded, watching as she turned her board around. "See you around, Max."
She glanced over her shoulder, giving you a quick nod before skating back to her trailer, her slouched posture betraying just how down she felt.
You stood there for a moment, watching her go, thoughtful. Something about her—about the way she carried that heaviness—reminded you too much of yourself at that age. After a few more seconds of quiet contemplation, you shook the thought off and turned toward your own trailer.
Inside, you got to work making the place a little more livable. Putting your small groceries away and tidying up here and there, doing what you could to make the space feel just a little more like home before you’d need to head to The Hideout for your shift. It wasn’t much, but it was something to keep your mind busy.
You rummaged through your ratty travel bag, pulling out the most essential of your even fewer possessions. Most of what you owned had been left behind in Derry, scattered in the corners of the life you’d been so eager to leave. What you did keep was precious, the things that actually mattered. There wasn’t much. Just a few changes of clothes, money, random knick knacks, and your sketchbooks—some old, some new.
At the bottom of your bag, you found your turtle keychain. You had taken it off your keyring before handing the rest of your keys to Sam, slipping the little turtle into your bag where it would stay safe. Thinking little about it, you lopped the keys of your temporary home into it, pocketing them on your jean pockets for safekeeping.
Eventually it was time to leave this temporary space and face whatever was waiting for you on your first full night at The Hideout. You grabbed your things, made sure everything was in order, and stepped outside, letting the door creak shut behind you. The air was still, but there was a hint of excitement in the unknown.
Unbeknownst to you, across the way, a pair of eyes followed your every move. Behind a crack in the blinds of her own trailer, Max watched you leave, her face half-hidden in shadow. She wasn’t one to bother with neighbours—didn’t see much point in getting attached—but something about you caught her attention. Maybe it was the confidence you carried when you approached her earlier, or the way you casually dropped the bombshell about beating her high score. That rare smile she’d given wasn’t something she handed out lightly, and while she wasn’t about to admit it, she was intrigued.
Max sighed and let the blinds fall back into place, retreating to the dim and cramped interior of her trailer. The silence pressed against her ears like cotton, broken only by the muffled sound of her mother shuffling around the kitchen.
Shaking it off, she stepped back into the living room and sank onto the worn couch. Her gaze flicked toward the window again, even though you were long gone. Something about you lingered in her mind—a strange mix of admiration and curiosity. But just as quickly, she brushed it away, retreating back into herself.
Out of sight, out of mind. Or so she told herself.

It was a brisk night in Megapolis — just nearing the end of Summer and the start of the next season. You were waiting outside the front of Pigy's noodles, chatting with MK as you waited for Mei to arrive.
"And then I was all, 'no way a demon's gonna mess up my favorite arcade!' and I sent em crying with one hit of the staff!" MK said boldly. He was telling another daring (and probably slightly exaggerated) tale of heroism. You knew he was the Monkey Kid and Mei was one of his teammates, but the guy had a habit of turning his moments of panic into these epic tales of pure justice. You just chuckled along with his story for the time being.
While MK was using the stick of a broom to show some cool staff trick he totally did earlier that day, the familiar sound of an engine and a distant flash of bright green caught your eye. You and MK turned to see Mei halting her bike in front of the store, taking off her helmet and climbing down onto the pavement. "Hey monkey man!" she greeted MK, who gave his hello as he scrambled up off of the ground from his failed reenactment. Mei's snicker at his fumbling turned to a soft smile as she saw you.
"There's my girl!" Mei greeted, leaning over and giving you a big kiss on the cheek that you were almost certain left a pink mark behind from her lipstick. You chuckled as she put a helmet on your head, one she had custom made to be in the shape of your favorite animal. "You ready to head out?" she asked, and you nodded. "Bye, MK!" you called as you took Mei's hand after fastening the helmet onto your head. "Wait- you're not hanging here?" MK asked as he finally got upright. "It's date night, MK! We talked about this" Mei responded as you got on the back of her bike. "Oh! Oh yeah- don't have too much fun without me, girls!" MK called. "If we find a demon, we'll send em your way" you said playfully before you and Mei took off down the street.
As much as you loved your girlfriend, her bike traveled at what felt like mach speed every time you rode with her. You knew she liked the fast winds, all the adrenaline and passing up any car she could fit between. You just held onto her tight, arms around her waist as you looked at the blurry colors soaring past. By the time she slowed down, your face was practically pressed into her shoulder. She dismounted from the bike, patting your back. "You feeling okay, babe?" she asked, looking at you with a little concern.
"I'm okay," you replied "but the people you zipped past going 20 over the speed limit might not be" you joked. Mei chuckled, and when you looked up your helmet visors gently clicked when brushing against one another. Mei leaned in, pressing your helmets together with an exaggerated 'mmwwaah!'. You giggled as you took off yours, Mei following suit after. With a big smile, she kneeled down and held out a hand to you with a playful, "My lady". You smiled fondly, taking her hand and stepping off of the bike. Your eyebrow raised when you saw your destination.
"A rolling rink?" You ask as Mei gives you that wide grin you've come to love so much, a determined spark in her eyes. "Yeah! They've got some wicked cool skates. Plus," Mei began, shifting her hand in yours to properly hold your hand "There's a couple's skate too". You almost roll your eyes, but instead take her hand as you both began walking to the entrance. "Sounds fun".

chapter two : ghost in the city
My face was burried into my pillow, slowly scrolling through my phone when a message pops up.
The messages started innocently enough.
[ Jungkook ]:  You up?
[ You ]: Hey, yeah I'm up.
[ Jungkook ]: Is it too early to see that pretty face of yours?
[ You ]: Depends, where are you taking me?
[ Jungkook ]: Depends, where do you want to go?
[ You ]: Anywhere.
[ Jungkook ]: I do have a bike... meet me at the corner of 5th and Neon. In ten.
You and jungkook have been texting for around a week since you last saw each other at the arcade. He was more your type than you could've imagined.
So when he finally asked you to meet, how could you say no?
You walk into the corner, immediately seeing your guy.
Black puffer bike jacket, his hair a bit longer than it was before. With that god damn lip piercing you loved.
"Hey princess" He let out, walking closer towards you.
"Hey... nice ride"
"Yeah? You like? Its a VX-9 Viper, custom made"
"Shit that's sexy as hell, I own a seraph blade, too common around here"
Jungkook simply chuckles "Ready to go?"
_____
The engine of his matte-black bike purred beneath you as you clung to him, arms wrapped tight around his waist. The wind whipped past your face, carrying the scent of ozone, neon, and danger. The city lights bled together in a blur of color, the pulse of Auraxis alive under your skin.
You weren't sure where he was taking you until he slowed atop one of the oldest overpasses in the city. The skyline stretched wide ahead, fractured and beautiful, neon and shadow merging like a dream.
"This is my favorite spot," he said, helmet off now, curls tousled by the wind.
"Its beautiful. Why your favourite though?"
He looked ahead. "Because it's quiet. Out there, no one's trying to survive. Up here, I can breathe."
You stepped closer. "You can breathe with me?"
His smile was soft. Honest. "Yeah. I think I can."
He didn't kiss you. But the air between you carried the weight of a thousand almosts.
The ride back was slower this time. Jungkook wasn't in a rush to end the night, and neither were you. When he pulled up in front of your building, the city had quieted down, the streets empty except for the hum of far-off traffic and flickering streetlights.
He killed the engine but didn't move. Just sat there, helmet tucked under his arm, gaze fixed on you.
You turned to face him. "Thanks for the ride."
"Thanks for saying yes."
You smiled, then paused, tilting your head. "Is this the part where you vanish into the night again?"
He shook his head slowly. "Actually... I was hoping you'd say yes to something else."
Your brow lifted, amused. "Is this where you tell me you're secretly romantic?"
He gave a short laugh, then leaned in just slightly — not too close, but enough to make your breath catch.
"There's this place. Violet Drift." he said. "Tonight. Midnight. I'll be there with my crew."
Your heartbeat picked up. "You want me to come?"
"I want you to see more of me than just city lights and stolen bike rides."
You hesitated. Not because you didn't want to. But because the way he looked at you — like he was asking for something bigger than one night — made it hard to breathe.
"Okay," you said finally. "I'll come."
His smile was small, but something in it shifted — like you'd just stepped over a line that meant something to him.
"I'll see you there," he said, voice low.
Then he was gone — slipping back onto the bike, revving the engine, disappearing into the blur of neon without another word.
_____
"Let me get this straight," Yoongi said as he folded his arms. "He took you on a midnight bike ride and now he wants you to meet his gang friends at one of the most dangerous clubs in the city?"
"They're not just gang friends," you replied, tying your hair up in front of the mirror.
"Oh, I feel so much better now," Jimin muttered, pacing behind you. "Rae, seriously. You don't know these people."
"I know him," you said simply.
Yoongi scoffed. "You know his voice over text."
"He didn't have to ask me. He wanted me there."
"Which is exactly why we're going with you," Jimin cut in. "Because if one of them so much as breathes wrong in your direction—"
"You'll scare him off?" you teased. "Relax. I want to go. And I want you guys with me."
Yoongi and Jimin shared a look. Reluctant. Protective. But resigned.
"Fine," Yoongi said.
You sigh, moving forward to hug the both of them " I love you guys too much, I just want you guys to like him"
You hear them both sigh.
"We know baby. We know."
Violet Drift -
The club was a heartbeat you could feel before you ever saw it.
Down a cracked alley behind what looked like an abandoned warehouse. Its entrance was marked by nothing more than a single glowing sigil above a steel door — dark red, like the promise of something dangerous.
Yoongi surveyed the entrance like he was planning an escape route. "This place smells like blood and bad decisions."
"You say that like it's new," Jimin muttered, pulling his jacket tighter. He glanced at you. "You sure about this?"
You nodded, heart pounding.
You spotted Jungkook near the back bar, lit in violet and red. He wore black on black, rings on his fingers, a chain glinting at his neck. Around him were four others — each dangerous in their own way.
"You came," Jungkook said as you approached, eyes never leaving yours.
"Told you I would."
He smiled, then nodded at his friends.
"My friends. Namjoon. Jin. Hoseok. Taehyung," he introduced.
Each one nodded, offering a variation of polite nods and appraising looks.
"This is Jimin and Yoongi," you said, glancing back at your guys.
Taehyung's gaze lingered on Jimin a moment too long.
Jimin's brows pulled together. There was something there — not memory exactly, but a flicker of recognition. He couldn't place it.
"You look familiar," Jimin said slowly.
Taehyung smiled faintly. "I get that a lot."
You cut in before the tension could build. "You guys all grew up together?"
"Most of us," Jin answered softly, sipping his drink. "Some bonded by blood. Some by bullets."
"Comforting," Yoongi muttered.
Jungkook laughed. "They're family."
Then Jungkook leaned in, lips brushing close to your ear. "Come with me."
You glanced between your friends, hesitant.
"I won't take you far," he added, softer. "Just need a second. Alone."
Jimin mentally sighed, nodding in approval. "We'll wait here, be back soon alright?"
He says softly, leaning in to place a kiss on your forehead, not before whispering to you
"You're wearing the necklace right? Press it if something is wrong, we'll come and get you."
You simply nod. Giving him an "ill be okay" look, before jungkook takes his hand in yours.
You followed him through the winding corridors of Nox, the music dulling behind you. Up a narrow staircase, he led you to a quiet side balcony overlooking the city.
The air was cooler here. The skyline stretched out in fractured light.
For a long moment, he said nothing — just leaned on the railing, hands clasped together. You joined him, arms brushing.
"Was it too much?" he asked quietly.
"The club?"
"My world."
You looked at him, surprised by the vulnerability in his voice. "I've seen worse."
"I don't want you seeing worse. Not because of me."
"Too late for that," you murmured.
He turned to you fully now. "You keep showing up like I didn't build every wall for a reason."
You tilted your head. "And you keep letting me in like I wasn't built to break them."
His breath hitched slightly. You could see it in the twitch of his jaw, the flare of something in his eyes.
He stepped closer. Not touching. But close enough that the space between you felt electric.
"Rae..." he said softly, voice a little raw. "You scare the shit out of me."
You swallowed. "Why?"
"Because I don't think I'd let go of you, even if I should."
You didn't move. Didn't breathe. But God, you wanted to.
Then— your phone buzzed.
The sound cut the moment in half. You pulled it from your pocket, saw Jimin's name, and answered immediately.
"Jimin?"
Gunshots cracked through the line.
"Rae—get down here. Now. Someone broke in. They're shooting—"
The line cut.
You looked at Jungkook — his expression already shifting, mask slamming down over softness like armor.
"Stay behind me," he said, already turning.
But you were already running_____
The music below cut out.
Then came the screams.
You bolted past Jungkook and down the stairs, your boots pounding against the metal, heart jackhammering in your chest. The flashing lights from the club distorted everything—faces, bodies, shadows. Then the first gunshot shattered the illusion.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
People screamed and scattered. Broken glass rained down from the bar. Someone shoved into you hard as you reached the ground floor. You tripped, caught yourself, and scanned the chaos.
Jimin and Yoongi were crouched behind an overturned table, eyes scanning the exits. Yoongi's gun was already drawn. Jimin pulled you down with them the second he saw you.
"Are you out of your mind?" Jimin shouted over the noise.
"I'm fine, chim" you said, breathless.
"Where is he?" Yoongi asked. You looked behind you to see jungkook not in sight.
"Upstairs—he—he was right behind me—"
A body slammed into the table you were hiding behind, sending it lurching. Gunfire crackled from the balcony now. You turned to look — Jungkook had returned fire, leaning over the railing, shooting into the crowd with precision. He wasn't aiming at civilians. Just one group.
Four men in armored coats and masks had stormed the front entrance. They weren't just random thugs — this was coordinated. Planned. One of them barked into a comm unit as another sprayed bullets across the bar, ripping into the sound system and throwing the place into blackout.
Only strobing lights and chaos remained.
"They're looking for someone," Yoongi growled. "This isn't random."
Jimin's jaw clenched. "You think it's him? Jungkook?"
"Or someone in his crew."
"Either way," you said, pulling a small blade from your boot, "we're not just sitting here."
Jimin stared at you, stunned for a heartbeat. Then he nodded. "Stay behind me."
"Not a chance."
From the smoke, Taehyung appeared, dragging an injured Jin behind a booth. Blood streaked his sleeve but his eyes were clear — calculating. Namjoon flanked him, barking orders, trying to get clubgoers out the back exit.
Jungkook leapt the balcony railing and landed hard beside you, crouched low. "You okay?" he asked.
You nodded. "Your guy's bleeding."
He looked to Jin and winced. "Shit."
"Who the hell are they?" Yoongi asked.
Jungkook's expression hardened. "Not friends."
"Clearly," Jimin snapped. "Why are they targeting you?"
Before Jungkook could answer, a bullet ricocheted off the wall behind him. Everyone ducked. You didn't hesitate — grabbing Jungkook's wrist and pulling him toward the kitchen entrance.
"This way!" you shouted.
Jimin and Yoongi followed, guns drawn, covering you as you dashed behind cover, weaving through the tangle of panicked bodies and furniture. The kitchen door slammed open as you burst through, heart still thundering.
Steam. Metal. Blades. The kitchen was chaos of another kind — staff hiding or fleeing through side doors.
"Emergency exit," Jungkook barked, pointing to the far end.
Namjoon caught up, breathless. "Taehyung's with Jin. Hoseok's pinning the shooters down—buying us time."
"You all need to go," Jungkook said to you, voice low and commanding. "Now."
"Not without you," you said, gripping his jacket.
Bang.Bang.Bang. --- the sound echoes again
Jungkook turned, fired three clean shots over the crowd — warning, not kill. "Who the fuck are these guys?"
"Not locals," Namjoon replied through grit teeth. "They're targeting us."
But you caught the shift. They weren't targeting them.
They were sweeping the crowd — looking for someone.
You.
Yoongi met your eyes across the floor, blood smudged along his cheekbone. "We're leaving. Now."
"Go with them," Jungkook said quickly, already scanning for your exit path. "I'll cover."
You grabbed his arm. "You'll be okay?"
He hesitated. Just a second.
Then leaned in, mouth to your ear. "If I'm not, remember what I didn't say."
And then he was gone — lost in the smoke and gunfire, a blur of leather, steel, and shadow.
_____
You didn't sleep.
None of you did.
Back at the apartment, your knuckles were still trembling as you pressed a wet towel to the scrape along Jimin's arm. Yoongi stood at the window, staring out like the city might throw another enemy through the glass.
"No one followed us," he said, voice low. "But that wasn't random."
Jimin's jaw was clenched. "It was Taehyung."
You froze. "What?"
"I know that face, I saw that damn snake tattoo at the back of his neck." Jimin muttered, flexing his shoulder with a wince. "I couldn't place it before, but I know it now. He was there the night—" He stopped himself.
Yoongi turned. "The night your parents were killed."
Jimin nodded once.
You sat down hard.
"That doesn't mean Jungkook—" you started.
"It means he's connected," Yoongi snapped. "It means we were just at a table with the sons of the man who destroyed our lives."
"That doesn't make Jungkook like him."
"You don't know that."
"I do," you said, voice breaking slightly. "You weren't there on that balcony. He—he sees me."
Jimin's face softened just slightly. But his eyes didn't waver.
"You don't know what he's capable of when it's not you he's trying to impress."
You wrapped your arms around your knees, trying to breathe.
Yoongi knelt in front of you. "We're not telling you this to hurt you. We're telling you because we can't lose you."
"I'm not stupid," you whispered. "I know this isn't simple."
Jimin looked away. "Im sorry rae, this is just a lot right now." He says, slowly walking away into his room, shutting the door behind him.
No one spoke after that. The silence in the room was a weight.
But deep inside your chest, under the fear and the grief, was something else still burning—
His voice in your ear.
"If I'm not, remember what I didn't say."
You didn't know what was coming next.
But something had already started.
And it wasn't stopping now

I thought i'd introduce myself, shant I?
Welcome to my blog kind stranger!
My name's Lilly, Lilliana and any other alternate spellings. You may also call me Pyro. I'm a 19 year old Software Engineering University student. I also happen to be transgender and aroace*! Im also in a commited relationship with @hxy0k! Go check out their stuff!
So uh. Whats your deal?
Im glad you ask! Im a huge nerd! (Of everything there is to gain knowledge of, I will try to know and remember It! (and fail at It but try!))...
...but I mostly like greek mythology, videogames and medieval history and architecture.
oh yeah. im also a Dungeon Master! i play Pathfinder 2e, D&D, TWDRPG, Unnoficial Hollow Knight TTRPG, Hitos (A Spanish System with no known translations that I know of) and currently I'm making my own! (based on d100s and percentiles, with so much customization its taking YEARS to make (currently its been 4 years in the making)). Other TTRPGs I want to play but I haven't yet (because getting groups together to play is management hell) include Vampire The Masquerade, Cyberpunk and LANCER!
What about talking to you?
Do it!!!!! I have heavy social anxiety and talking to people is incredibly hard. I am 100% approachable and as friendly as I can. I am just anxious constantly and making the first move is hard on my psyche.
Asks are open, DM's too.
I love talking. a lot. about anything and everything. i also listen a lot (even if im not good at conversation).
What videogames you play?
All I can get my hands on. But since you are asking so nicely...
My favorite genres of games to play are; RPGs (with amongst my favorites being the Owlcat Pathfinder games, Fallout: New Vegas, Baldur's Gate 3, Disco Elysium, Dragon's Dogma 1/DA, Cyberpunk 2077 and KOTOR 2 (I didn't play 1 when i played the second I should replay both on Steam now)), Shooters (WILDLY varied taste tho, but I really like Halo (Reach, my beloved), the whole Metro Franchise (SO ATMOSPHERIC SO COOL), Ultrakill, Helldivers 2), Stealth games (with a love for the Dishonored franchise and Metal Gear, but one of my recent likes is Mark of the Ninja!), VR games (this isn't even a genre, but I LOVE Blade and Sorcery and the The Walking Dead VR games. My favorite VR Game is Blade and Sorcery, hands down), any Game made by Valve (seriously Portal and Left 4 Dead are two of my favorite games) and arcade games! (This including ANYTHING really. I love Beat Em Ups, side-scrollers, platformers... I've spent hours playing weird obscure games using emulation tools that would be lost to time otherwise. But my favorites? Both Dungeons & Dragons SOM//TOD and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. Honorary mention to Knights of the Round (Did you notice I like beat em ups?))
...i also have others I couldnt fit here. Im not a fighting game girlie (because im really bad at them) but I really like Soulcalibur, Street Fighter III and Guilty Gear!
Im also not a horror game aficionada but SIGNALIS has been A WORLD SHATTERING EVENT in my gaming career. BRAIN TWEAKING EXPERIENCE. Chemistry completely changed forever. Please play It. Right now. Its imperative you do, for your sake.
I also really like the first Dark Souls! I would love to say more but- I can't. Its been years and I've only played the first one. Bloodborne fucks severely tho and I will defend It forever GOSH how i love em both even if the second half of the first DS, SUCKS, SEVERELY. (Im the only person i know that hates having to run through the Duke's Archives so much i put off New Game + cycles forever to NOT go kill scaleless' ass)
I really like Indie games but since every single one I like is basically a different genre here you got a speedrun (and recomendation list!);
Celeste (my favorite Game ever, helped so much with anxiety at the time, played It when i didn't know I was transgender... That fact gets funnier with replay), Deadlight (play It once and thats it. Zombie parkour puzzle Game.), Slay the Princess (the multiple voices thing is oddly relatable), Project Zomboid (100% the BEST BEST zombie survival Game ever, love It), Webfishing, Darkest Dungeon (MY BELOVED the sequel), Noita (i like torture), Hollow Knight (even tho im not really into metroidvanias, Hollow Knight IS really fun), Terraria (player since 1.1!), Charlie Murder (not that well known and they deserve It!!), Broforce (It is. So fun), every Game made by The Behemot, Lethal Company, Phasmophobia, Rain World, Undertale and Deltarune (of course) and lastly, Inscryption (another Game that is so so good, please play It)
And well, not an Indie but... I play Minecraft. So much
WOW. Thats was a LOT of text. Anything you do on the side outside of playing games?
I write! Both for my TTRPG campaigns I DM but also stuff on the side!
Nothing's public tho, my cringy fanfiction Will stay with me to my grave. However, I am writing original material right now! A Magical Girls story which any kind of synopsis would blow up the initial mystery. I **may** share snippets of It some day. If my anxiety allows me.
I also do YouTube videos. They aren't very good but I like em. Please check It out. And leave comments! They do make my day.
And... Im also a musician! I play the piano, I'm a drummer and I sing in a choir. I'm composing some stuff on the side as well but I dont have time nor resources to record and compose as comfortably as I'd like. Maybe if I end Up being able to get something I'll post It!
And i draw. Im not good at It, but I draw! This blog should have SOME examples of OC's i draw. Some of em are NPCs in my campaigns, others are player characters, other are just characters. I love em all the same.
Anything else?
I know the Standard Galactic Alphabet. I think its neat. My favorite movie is The Princess Bride. My favorite song is... im not sure I have too many. I have two Blåhaj.
I think you are good to go! Venture into my blog as you wish!
Oh, well. I am also probably autistic. There are no doubts in my all autistic friend group about it.
*im on the aroace spectrum, demisexual and demiromantic to be precise.

Where do the characters get the stuff they use In the Mario Kart Games from? And did the characters design the tracks that have their names?
I’m not quite sure what stuff you’re specifically referring to, but regardless, the answer is quite complicated. Assuming you’re talking about Karts and Items, the answer is “various places”.
Back in Super Mario Kart, while Mario was likely the one who organised, funded or at least initially proposed the event, Lakitu was the coordinator of the event, and ran the tracks. In the beginning they had more conservative rules surrounding the vehicles in use on the courses:
Hi everybody! Thanks for dropping by the Super Mario Kart race track. My name is Lakitu, I run this track. If you need my help, I'll be around. We race one seater, metal pipe frame go carts here. There are two engine sizes to choose from: 50cc or 100cc.
[Source: INTRODUCTION, Page 2, Instruction Booklet of Super Mario Kart, September 1992]
Mario Kart stated out a a fun recreational event with a handful of trophies. That’s the main reason the characters take part, and it has been the reason since the very beginning, in Super Mario Kart. Each one of the characters is competing due to their connection to Mario.
Tumblr media
An adorable little kart racetrack has been built in the Mario world! Mario and his happy-go-lucky friends have gotten so enthusiastic about kart racing that they're already causing a ruckus! Even now, they're smack in the middle of a race! Let's take a quick peek at how it's going, shall we? Oh, it's just about to start! Even the usually cute characters look a little tense. Let's watch Mario and friends fight hard!
[Source: Intro, Japanese Store Promo for Super Mario Kart, August 1992]
However, in the years since it has become the Mushroom Kingdom’s premiere racing event and grown significantly. Racers from various Kingdoms take part resulting in an incredibly diverse audience. Mario Kart now has dozens of sponsors for each Grand Prix, extended tournaments, its own television network, branded tracks and inter-dimensional courses and guest racers.
Mario Kart 64 was the first major step in this direction, but Mario Kart: Double Dash!! brought things even further. From its manual:
THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM’S PREMIER RACING EVENT IS BACK! HOWEVER, THERE’S BEEN ONE MAJOR CHANGE TO THE RULES OF THE ROAD… THERE ARE NOW TWO RIDERS PER KART! NOW, RIDERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE LAND HAVE COME TOGETHER NO TEST THEIR DRIVING SKILLS. WHICH PAIR WILL PROVE THE FASTEST?
[Source: The Double Dash Grand Prix!, Page 6, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, November 2003]
When Mario Kart started out, standard Pipe Frames were the only legal builds for the Mario GP. These models were likely built by Mario and his friends themselves.
Tumblr media
However, with Mario Kart: Double Dash!! the Pipe Frames were retired in favour of a variety of Karts. Many of these karts were custom-made or modified pre-existing cars. Take Luigi's kart of choice in Mario Kart DS, for example: the Poltergust 4000. This Kart is part of the Poltergust series, a line of inventions created by Professor E. Gadd.
Another pair of examples are the Wario Car, which Wario makes use of in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and the Wario Bike, which Wario makes use of in Mario Kart Wii. These are Wario's personal car and bike, which he uses in the Wario Land and WarioWare titles, and both were built by Wario's friend Dr. Crygor:
I AM DR. CRYGOR, THE GENIUS SCHOLAR. OTHERS HAVE SAID A "DANGEROUS" SCHOLAR, BUT I PAY NO MIND TO THEIR OPINIONS. MY LABORATORY IS SET UP TO FURTHER MY EXPERIMENTS IN REALITY GAMES. FEEL FREE TO STOP BY AND CONTRIBUTE TO MY RESEARCH. IT IS QUITE FUN. DID YOU KNOW THAT I WAS THE ONE WHO CREATED WARIO'S CAR? WHAT? YOU DO NOT KNOW? DO YOUR RESEARCH!
[Source: The Laboratory Authority - Dr. Crygor, Page 21, Instruction Booklet of WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, May 2003]
This odd genius lives in seclusion. He built Wario’s bike. Mona’s moped, Kat’s sword, and Jimmy’s cell phone. He wears a cryogenic suit that doesn’t protect his head.
[Source: Dr. Crygor's character profile, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, April 2004]
The Standard Kart series of builds was then introduced as a replacement for the Pipe Frame in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 and carried into tournaments from Mario Kart DS onwards. As a result of this, in later tournaments, custom or pre-existing vehicles were allowed to enter the tournament upon being modified to be legal for the Grand Prix. The Pipe Frames did eventually return in tournaments from Mario Kart 7 onwards, which featured more in-depth kart customisation.
Speaking of which, the Mario Kart events are sponsored by other brands Mario owns, such as Mario Motors, Mario Star, etc. These sponsors, as well as the many others not otherwise connected to Mario, likely fund the events and even provide them with parts and supplies.
It stands to reason that Mushroom Piston Engines provides engines, Fuzzy Battery provides batteries, Bob-omb Plugs provides spark plugs, Dream Gliders provides gliders, 1-Up Fuel provides fuel, Bowser Oil provides oil, 100% Organic Antifreeze provides antifreeze, etc.
Tumblr media
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 makes reference to a Grand Prix Committee, which sends letters to Cup winners to invite them to the Cup’s special Challenge stage. Their letters are closed with an “M” stamped seal. This would imply Mario is at least on this committee, if not the head of it. This is presumably the committee that organises the events and decides which participants to invite, what items will be used, etc.
Tumblr media
As mentioned previously, all of the participants either know Mario directly or have connections to people who know Mario. The Super Mario Kart manual seems to call attention to how each of the participant racers connect to Mario specifically.
MARIO & LUIGI The Mario Brothers have pretty much the same abilities in cart driving. Mario and Luigi have had a friendly rivalry that goes back to their childhood.
[Source: THE 8 CART DRIVERS, Page 21, Instruction Booklet of Super Mario Kart, September 1992]
PRINCESS & YOSHI At first, you might think that The Princess and Yoshi would have nothing in common (except their fondness for Mario).
[Source: THE 8 CART DRIVERS, Page 22, Instruction Booklet of Super Mario Kart, September 1992]
BOWSER & DONKEY KONG JR. These two drivers have long been Mario's arch enemies.
[Source: THE 8 CART DRIVERS, Page 23, Instruction Booklet of Super Mario Kart, September 1992]
While Toad and Koopa Troopa's descriptions don't specifically connect them to Mario, Toad is of course a long-time friend of Mario and servant to Peach, while Koopa Troopa is a minion of Bowser:
Usually a faithful underling of Bowser, [Koopa Troopa] shows even the big boss no mercy during a race.
[Source: Characters and Special Items, Page 20, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, November 2003]
Koopa Troopa, of the Turtle Tribe. Usually one of Bowser's minions, but as far as races go, it's a different story!?
[Source: Characters, Mario Kart Wii, Nintendo Co., Ltd. website]
In short, Mario is what brings them all together - and in turn they each bring their own special items. The iconic Banana Peels thrown by racers in the Mario Kart series are actually from the Kong's Banana Hoard on Donkey Kong Island, having originally been brought to the races by Donkey Kong Jr. back in Super Mario Kart:
Tumblr media
Because of Donkey Kong Jr.! He likes bananas, and the peels are slippery, so they got the okay.
[Source: Tadashi Sugiyama, Director and C.G. Designer of Super Mario Kart, Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES developer interview – Volume 4: Super Mario Kart, September 2017]
In the original game, the only CPU-controlled character who throws banana peels is Donkey Kong Jr., which was a way to characterise the characters.
[Source: Hideki Konno, Director of Super Mario Kart, Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES developer interview – Volume 4: Super Mario Kart, September 2017]
Despite Donkey Kong Jr. not appearing in tournaments after Super Mario Kart, it seems his son, the current Donkey Kong, continued to supply Bananas from Mario Kart 64 onwards. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong even brought along some Giant Bananas in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart: Arcade GP 2 and Mario Kart Tour:
Special Item GIANT BANANA Only DK and Diddy know where these monstrous fruit can be found.
[Source: Characters and Special Items, Page 19, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, November 2003] From this we can speculate about the origins of other items. Shells are common clothing/armour worn by Koopas, but seeing as the shells in Mario Kart are standard Koopa Troopa Shells, it stands to reason that the Koopa Troopa racer or perhaps Bowser brought the Red Shells and Green Shells originally used in Super Mario Kart.
Tumblr media
These shells are worn by Koopa Troopas, both within and outside of Bowser's Army. We can even see one of Bowser's Airships in Super Mario Galaxy equipped with a shell dispenser:
Tumblr media
The Green Shells and Red Shells even function how you'd expect - with Green Shells flying straight forward and Red Shells heading towards the nearest target!
However, with the expansion of Mario Kart in later titles the shells, which are mass-produced, appear to be provided by a company, with sponsors for "Green Shell Strike Equipment" and "Red Shell Strike Equipment" making appearances:
Tumblr media
Koopa Troopa and Koopa Paratroopa seem to have their own supply in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!:
Special Items TRIPLE SHELLS (GREEN / RED) Don't let Koopa and Paratroopa worry about not having enough shells.
[Source: Characters and Special Items, Page 20, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, November 2003]
Bowser also provides his own shells for the tournaments in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart: Arcade GP 2 and Mario Kart Tour:
Bowser's Shell This big ol' shell on loan from Bowser will crash any karts it hits and keep on going. It can only be thrown forward.
[Source: Items, Tips and Tricks, Mario Kart Tour, September 2019]
On the topic of items, Super Mario Kart used ? Panels to dispense its items. These panels are likely made by the same people in the Mushroom Kingdom who make ? Blocks. While they weren't used in later Mario Kart tournaments, they have still made a few other appearances since, such as in Mario Party 9.
Tumblr media
From the Mario Kart 64 Mario GP onwards the ? Panels were replaced with the iconic Item Boxes, which were likely much more convenient for transportation and addition to the racetracks. But it wasn't until Mario Kart Wii where we actually learned where these come from, through the course Toad's Factory.
Tumblr media
This is actually the Item Box Factory, as we can see not only from the trackside banners with the Item Box logo and giant sign of Toad with an Item Box, but from the shipping containers with items ready to go into the Item Boxes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside the factory, we can even see the process of how Item Boxes are made. The Items are put inside standard Brick Blocks, before the Brick Blocks are placed on a conveyor belt with stamps of some sort. These stamps appear to be filled with some sort of magical rainbow liquid, likely sourced from Power Stars, which transforms the Brick Blocks into the Item Boxes, giving them their translucent rainbow appearance and their ability to float:

Circling back to the Kongs for a moment, Funky Kong is actually the one responsible for the construction of the DK Barrel Cannons featured prominently throughout Mario Kart courses.
Tumblr media
We learn this when Donkey Kong mentions Funky in the context of their creation in Mario Super Sluggers:
Oooook! (Looks like Funky Kong has been busy.)
[Source: Donkey Kong, Best Friend of Funky Kong, Playable Character in Mario Super Sluggers, August 2008]
This isn't all too surprising though, given Funky Kong's previous barrel-based mechanic work and his appearances in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart Tour, as well as the barrel-inspired Funky Stadium which he presumably also built:
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, it's about time I discuss the stadiums, circuits and other courses and where they came from!
Mario is world-famous and incredibly wealthy from his adventures, businesses and sports stardom. Multiple of the circuits in the games are also clearly built by him or at least in honour of him. He‘s the only character with actual circuits named after him in Super Mario Kart:
State-of-the-art racetracks in the Mario world that are rich in variety. The effectiveness of the pipe obstacles is the key.
[Source: Mario Circuit's description, Japanese Store Promo for Super Mario Kart, August 1992]
Mario Circuits have also been described as the primary circuits of their respective Grand Prix:
Mario Circuit This is the main circuit in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Familiar denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom can be spotted here and there. The road's filled with curves, so this is a good place to practice drifting.
[Source: Courses, Page 31, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, November 2003]
It stands to reason that most characters had a hand in designing the tracks that bear their names. In fact we know that's the case for several courses, such as N64 Wario Stadium:
That rascal Wario was in charge of the design and construction of this course. A fan of motocross races, he brought in major amounts of sand to fill this huge stadium in an attempt to build a course more suitable to bikes than Karts. Each lap's distance is extremely long, making it difficult to stay concentrated on the race.
[Source: MARIO KART 64 COURSE MAPS, Page 30, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart 64, February 1997]
Meanwhile the Bowser's Castle courses are modified from or otherwise based on the real Bowser's Castle:
Surprisingly, the Bowser's Castle has been transformed into a race ground! Because it's inside the building, most of the corners are tricky right angles. However, the most difficult part of the course is where the Thwomps are. They will block your path, and if you run into one, you will spin out. Should you be stepped by one, you'll find yourself squished flat as a pancake.
[Source: MARIO KART 64 COURSE MAPS, Page 31, Instruction Booklet of Mario Kart 64, February 1997]
Bowser typically designs his courses with the help of his minions to be filled with traps in the hopes of beating Mario. This goes beyond the Mario Kart tracks and also applies to his Tennis Courts, Golf Courses, etc.:
Lord Bowser designed his course to defeat Mario, so it’s kinda full of lava and bombs and stuff like that.
[Source: Spiny, Minion of Bowser, Non-player Character in Mario Golf: Super Rush, June 2021]
Bowser enlisted his minions to create this course in hopes of defeating Mario with all the traps and hazards.
[Source: Koopa Troopa, Minion of Bowser, Non-player Character in Mario Golf: Super Rush, June 2021]
However, this isn't universally the case. For example, Peach Beach is merely Princess Peach's favourite beach resort in the Southern Isles, while Toad's Turnpike is on a public road in Toad City!
I could go on and on about the Mario Kart series and the depth to its worldbuilding, but I think that's quite enough for today. Thank you for reading!

Game Review: Tetris Effect: Connected
Tumblr media
General opinion: Positive.
Tetris Effect: Connected is, obviously, a tetris game, with a modern graphical twist. It has classic and VR modes, both of which have their own pros and cons, but are also both worth checking out if you have the ability to. With several different modes, Tetris Effect: Connected offers a lot of different styles of gameplay for varying skill levels.
Starting off, I want to give the game devs credit where credit is due: this game absolutely slaps for it's visuals. A tetris game in the Unreal engine is certainly a choice to make, and they pulled it off really well. Sparkly particles, glowing animations, and surreal visual effects bring a magical experience to a classic arcade game, no matter if you play it in VR or on your screen.
It has both a main campaign where you play through different levels in a story-like sequence, as well as other, more casual AND more intense gameplay options. Marathon modes through themed levels, gimmick modes where you clear "corrupted" blocks or deal with mind boggling effects, and calm modes where you have no game over are all available to play, giving variety for any kind of player.
On top of this, they have colourblind modes of various kinds for the game stages themselves. You can play with classic colours, custom level patterns, or modes that add patterns and colours that make it easier to distinguish the blocks from each other. There's also multiple difficulty levels, ranging from beginner to hard, so you can adjust how many lines you want to clear per level.
The final point I want to praise is the audio experience. It's amazing. There's unique, original tracks made for the game, and the "title song" (used colloquially because it's not actually the title screen song, but it is the one from the first level in the story mode) is ABSOLUTELY incredible in my opinion. Heavy beats that are influenced by the ways you turn, flip, and drop blocks paired with each level having individual themes to them that inspire and match the music playing make it both engaging as well as good to listen to on its own.
And now the negatives...
One major issue I have with this game is that the story mode does not have options for speed, nor do they have a "no game over" setting. This means people like myself, who have visual processing issues as well as mobility issues, have a harder time clearing levels and unlocking the next theme in line. Some levels have rapid speed ups and slow downs that are a bit jarring, and while I understand the fact they might not be able to give the option to not change the speed, I'd have really liked if they'd given an option to have no deaths. It meant, for me, that I got stuck on several levels that I otherwise would have really enjoyed because they went from speed level 3 to speed level 8 or higher all within one lines difference. Having this option for the story mode would have improved the experience immensely for me, as I'm still stuck on the last level in the easy mode.
The only other thing I'd add as a problem is that if you're photosensitive, it could get painful very fast, especially in VR mode. They do have options to turn down or off particles, change graphics settings, etc. but that doesn't change the fact that there are strobing lights on some levels that you cannot turn off.
The above limits the people I can truly recommend the game to, which is genuinely unfortunate, because I know several people who would LOVE this game, if it had the accessibility features mentioned.
Final notes
Overall, it's a great game that brings a really nice, fresh twist on a game that's a decade older than I am. It really justifies itself as an iteration of tetris, much like Jacob Geller has said.
If you liked this review, please go and check out Jacob Geller's video Tetris Effect And Other Games With Immaculate Vibes! It's the video that introduced me to this game, and he makes some really interesting observations on tetris and marble games, and how they interact with their history.
Additionally, I post these in my free time, but if anyone has movie, game, or series recommendations, please feel free to send them in! I really do love reviewing media, and if I can turn this into an actual job it would be incredible.

Unreal Engine: healing
I thought that it was kind of unfair that my player isn't able to get any health back after taking damage, and getting extra lives/health for playing well is a staple in most arcade games. Because of this I made a feature that heals the player if they don't take damage for a period of time:
Tumblr media
This custom event is called at the start of the game and whenever the player takes damage, so it's always running. At the moment it's set to 5 seconds, but I think a time of 25-30 would be more appropriate- I don't want games to drag on for ages/become too easy because of this.
This was a really simple feature to implement, but I think it makes the game fairer, rewards the player for playing well and gives them more agency in their runs.

7 For Whoever You Want >:3 Use A Random Number Generator Even
7: Laughing together + Roxanne Wolf
It was the very end of the day at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex. Guests were filing out slowly, dragging along their ever protesting children, who begged and cried for just one more picture, one more go at their favourite arcade machine, one more treat from the Fazcafé for the road. Attractions grew quieter until there was nothing but silence and the occasional sound of an animatronic enjoying their free time now that the place was closing.
One such place happened to be Roxy's Raceway, absent now of the usual ruckus of squealing tires and revving engines. But if one were close to the salon, they'd just be able to make out the casual chatter between a wolf and her special little Pizzaplex employee.
"No way a customer said that to you," Roxy scoffed, brushing a second coat of neon green onto her claws and admiring the sparkle in the light, amber eyes lidded at her own magnificence. Harland stood behind the seated animatronic, carefully brushing her beautiful mane of hair; something no one else would dare even ask to do.
"Yep! And then he had the nerve to be like, 'I want to speak to your manager,' after he tried to say I was stealing from him!" Harland mocked the customer by lowering their voice and shifting pitch between syllables. Roxy snorted a laugh and capped her nail polish, leaning back and stretching.
"Yeah, well, he's just lucky I wasn't there!" She proclaimed proudly, swiveling in her seat suddenly, catching Harland off guard. They stumbled a bit, only to have Roxanne quickly grab both their hands and pull them close, so the tip of their nose lightly booped her muzzle.
Harland giggled, though their face was bright red from the proximity. "Uh-huh, and what would you have been able to do? You have protocols, y'know. Can't enact violence against guests." Their tone was teasing, but Roxy took it as a challenge.
"Tickling someone to death doesn't count as violence," Roxy's grin turned evil and Harland's face dropped. Before they could so much as squeak in surprise, Roxy had pulled them forward into her lap so they were straddling her. Then Roxy used her freshly painted claws to dig into Harland's sides, delivering littles pokes and gentle scritches from under their arms down to their hips and back up again.
Harland squealed in delight, able to get away if they wanted but apparently not inclined enough, just squirming in place and half-heartedly pushing at Roxy's hands. Roxy laughed too, not her usual "on-stage" laugh, but her full, boisterous laugh. After a few minutes, Roxy's fingers slowed until they simply rested on Harland's hips. The wolf nuzzled into Harland's hair with one last affectionate chuckle as Harland's breaths slowed back to normal.
"I think, uh," they started, purring as Roxy buried her nose into a sensitive spot on their scalp. "I think this would get you in equal trouble with a customer…"
"Good thing you're not a customer," Roxy snickered, pulling back to look down at Harland's white uniform, which was now stained with streaks of green nail polish. She 'tsk'ed. "My nails are gonna need re-done now…"
"I'll do 'em for you, for a price," Harland grinned up at Roxy. The wolf leaned a little closer.
"Oh yeah? What's it gonna cost me?" She grinned back, already knowing the answer. Harland didn't need to reply, just leaned closer until–
"Awwww!" Harland and Roxy both froze at the familiar voice. "Aren't you two just the cutest little lovebugs I've ever seen!" They both glanced over to see Chica standing in the doorway, hands clapped together over her chest and grinning. Harland quickly scrambled off of Roxy's lap, their face bright red. In the same breath, Roxy had picked up a makeup palette and was aiming it directly at Chica's head.
"Chica!" The wolf growled, ears pinned back in annoyance at being interrupted. "Haven't ya ever heard of knocking?!"
"On glass?" Chica asked, tapping lightly on the salon doors, which were, indeed, glass. The makeup palette came soaring over anyway but crashed harmlessly against the ground as Chica ducked with an alarmed squawk.
"Mean!" Chica huffed, crossing her arms with a pout. "I just came to get you for the last photoshoot of the day! Freddy sent me! You know how he is about getting a last photo everyday with all of us! It means a lot to him!"
Roxy sighed. Ever since Bonnie had "disappeared", it had been Freddy's request that all four Glamrocks get together for a family photo before everyone went to their rooms for the night. It'd be a bit heartless to start skipping now. "Yeah, yeah, I'll be there. Just give me two seconds."
Chica grinned again and gave a big thumbs up before she left the two alone again, completely unphased by anything that had just happened. Harland twiddled their thumbs and looked at Roxy. "So, uh–"
Before they could continue, Roxy had pulled them close to give them a quick peck on the lips and an affectionate cheek nuzzle before pulling away and flipping her hair over her shoulder as she usually did. "Meet me in my party room and we can hang out some more, okay?"
Red-faced and dumbstruck, Harland just nodded, and Roxy gave a little laugh before finally turning and leaving the salon after Chica. Harland could hear the chicken's pleased warble as the wolf caught up with her and the two started chatting, growing distant. They touched their cheek and sighed, then shook their head and quickly began cleaning up the small mess from the encounter.
It wouldn't do to leave a mess when they were about to get a reward in just a little bit.
