Prompt 136
There is a small child floating in the Watchtower.
They’re visibly not human, a too-big cloak of purple (what shade no one knows, all they can describe about the cloak is purple, nothing else) hanging from them as big Lazarus-green eyes glare down in something of a pout. The child huffs, blowing white hair out of their face despite it shimmering and shifting on its own already.
How the child, inhuman or not, found their way into the Watchtower- without setting off an alarm no less- is a concern. A very large concern, but it can wait because there is a four-year old (if the child is the equivalent of a human child that is) at oldest staring down at them.
“Do you know where the speedsters are?” the child piped up after an awkward stare-down, none of the league members present quite sure what to do in this situation. It was probably around time to call Batman… or they could call Flash instead.

Hello :D
You're so cool
Anyway have you thought that in your rat sons au Splinter might outlive the boys?
You're very cool :D love your stuff dude
(tw for some blood, light gore, implied overdose (kinda??))
hi copper!!! this is a fantastic question!
so obviously typical irl rats have far shorter lifespans than the average irl tortoise. according to google (yes, be awed by my spectacularly in-depth wealth of research) the average pet rat lives between 2-4 years ish, and the oldest on record lived to be about 7. meanwhile, an African spurred tortoise (Splinter's species) averages more around a 50ish year lifespan in captivity, tho is suspected to possibly exceed 75 or more in the wild.
Now, the mutation does give us a lot of wiggle room for playing with these numbers. For the rat sons boys, id say their natural lifespan probably clocks in at about 45-55 years old? definitely not old by human standards, but not young young either. (though, its also important to note that the boys were exposed to the mutagen just days after being born.)
For Splinter, meanwhile, aging is slightly more complicated. He lived the vast majority of his life as a regular normal African spurred tortoise (well, non-mutated at least. there were perhaps some shenanigans of a more mystical variety going on before he was mutated, but thats a separate matter) He was about 70ish i think? when the boys were born and they were all exposed to the mutagen. so he is already distinctly an old man turtle papa. id guess he'd probably still have another eh lets say 25-30 years after his mutation. he could probably push it a little farther even with some mystic nonsense, but when push comes to shove id say his 'natural' post-mutation lifespan would put his death like a solid decade or two before his sons.
of course, the tricky part of the matter is that theres no way for Splinter to know any of this. theres no way for him to know how the mutation affected them all, or if it even affected them all in the same way. especially since the boys dont show many physical signs of mutation for the first few years, and just kinda look like normal rats, (albeit with a more human sort of intelligence) — what sort of health standard do you hold them to? what if they simply dont show external signs of sickness or old age anymore? how do you actually know if something is wrong?
for a while there Splinter is very worried that one of his babies will just essentially reach the end of their normal rat lifespan, fall and not get up again.
so mostly, he just tries to live in the moment, enjoying whatever time he does have with his little ones, taking each day as a gift <3
still,

GUT. PUNCHER. PLEASE. Ö
(also I see the Plo Coon WIP and I’m in the microwave)
Tumblr media
In an instant CC-2224 sees the blue on the other clone and recognizes his enemy — knows it is CT-7567 and knows the name he took and the color of his hair.
All that is in him that is screaming — was (always?) screaming — quietens. His finger does not depress upon the trigger. His hand does not twitch towards the backup blaster on his hip.
An instant, a moment, a breath, and a single thought—
I’m no soldier.
CT-7567’s finger is as quick as he knew it would be. Between one moment and the next, Cody is free.

“A Nigerian mom found out the hard way that jaundice is still a dangerous disease in Africa—but now she’s putting an end to the infant disease with her new tech startup, making solar-powered cribs.
After her traumatic experience with jaundice as a new mother, Virtue Oboro pivoted 180° in her professional life, in an effort to help prevent the terrifying situation from befalling other moms.
Oboro’s son, Tombra, was just 48 hours old when he had to be rushed to the NICU, suffering from a build-up of bilirubin, which causes yellow skin and can lead to permanent damage or even death.
The treatment is fairly simple... blue-light phototherapy.
Virtue’s hospital had no phototherapy devices, so Tombra had to receive a risky emergency blood transfusion. Her son would make a full recovery, but Virtue was changed by the experience.
“I felt like some of the things I experienced could have been avoided,” the visual designer told CNN. “I thought, is there something I could do to make the pain less for the babies and the mothers?”
What could a visual designer do? She designed the Crib A’Glow and named her new company Tiny Hearts.
The portable, deployable phototherapy unit is powered by the sun, and costs one-sixth the price of a normal phototherapy crib—and is manufactured in her homeland of Nigeria.
Virtue’s husband had some experience working with solar panels before, so he lent a hand to the visual designer, who was busy navigating the unknown waters of a new profession. She worked with a pediatrician through the design process to ensure all the details would benefit the tiny babies.
Two years ago, Crib A’Glow picked up a $50,000 grant from Johnson & Johnson through the Africa Innovation Challenge, and the Crib A’Glow can now be found in 500 hospitals across Nigeria and neighboring Ghana. Already it has been used on 300,000 babies.
Virtue, who has also become a 2022 awardee for The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, says a further 200,000 babies were saved from jaundice by deploying the cribs to rural areas—no hospitals or electricity needed.” -via Good News Network, 3/9/22

would whitewater end up getting dark forested for her support of mudclaw, her hypocrisy, and her neglect?
There's a VERY high chance of it. She's almost certainly damned unless someone defended her VERY well (which is unlikely)
When StarClan makes a ruling, they aren't neccesarily deciding if you are Guilty or Innocent. They're determining if you are worthy of their ranks. You have to prove you belong in Heaven, NOT that you're not bad enough for Hell.
For most warriors this is a very simple yes, and no trial is required... but if you so much as OFFEND StarClan with your bad vibes, they might damn you just for that. Whitewater has a really bad reputation for everything she's done.
The Queen’s Rights actually work "legally" on the assumption that judgement is outsourced to StarClan, because mortals (Oakstar) can't be trusted to be impartial on this specifically. The birth of kittens cannot be used as evidence of codebreaking behavior... on the mortal plane.
StarClan was ALREADY going to give her a review just based on her affair with Mudclaw. If it ended on the Great Journey like they initially planned and she invoked QR with her Ba-less litter, there wouldn't even be a trial.
But that's not how this story goes. She was a ShadowClan cat involved in Mudclaw's rebellion, because she wanted to support him.
SHE might have only done that because she wanted to avoid ThunderClan "putting their paws in another Clan's business" or some other excuse, but StarClan says
"L + Ratio + Supported your baby daddy's coup + Set the peat on fire + What were YOU doing putting your paws in another Clan's business"
StarClan didn't even accept MUDCLAW'S explaination. They didn't even accept VIXENLEAP'S excuse, just some Thistle Law-loving RiverClan warrior who joined because Hawkyfrosty asked her to. They were always going to give Whitewater a hard time for this.
Whitewater might have been able to wrack up some goodgirl points by being a very loyal ShadowClan warrior..... and she did, a little.
But she kept her head down. No spectacular feats of redemption. Just tried to live quiet. That doesn't incur a lot of favor.
And then, the part you've been waiting for... how she treated Owlkit. Theyyyy didn't like that.
If she was sooo unattached to her mate, why did his smiting BOTHER her so much, hm?
She might have won favor for doing something very noble and giving the kittens to the bereaved Torear, but she KEPT Owlkit. Any love she had that influenced that choice drained away
and she didn't do the "right thing" for him by asking for help. She just did the bare minimum at best, and hid her abuse at worst.
Unfortunately though, the neglect and emotional abuse did not earn as much ire on their own as you're hoping. StarClan is (and was) full of much worse abusers. Hillrunner, for example.
Most of StarClan's condemnation would be based around Mudclaw's Rebellion... but they've been waiting a LONG time to process the surviving non-WindClan rebels. So... she's probably doomed.
Unfortunately I cannot imagine she takes it well. She completely ignores that Owlclaw was just a footnote in her condemnation, and uses it to confirm everything she ever believed.
"That kitten WAS meant to die that night. I should have dragged that child out into the storm with the rest of its cursed siblings. I've been shoved into the spot where Owlclaw should be!"
Hmm... maybe I should axe her shortly before the Great Battle, and actually have HER be the one who attacks Owlclaw's kittens. It would be pretty horrifying if she was the one who killed Weaselkit, her own grandchild.

Don’t think about Bella, a few months along, visiting department stores and sorting through the available patterns of baby clothes.
Don’t imagine her comparing swatches of fabric, testing the weave and the softness and the color to find something perfect for her baby. Don’t imagine the hours she spends sewing seams and fastening buttons, making outfits far larger than what a newborn might wear: dresses that would fit a two month old, a six month old, a year, two; a whole collection of outfits for her darling daughter because somehow she just knows it’s a girl. Don’t imagine her going to Arthur and showing him the clothes she’s made with tender love and care and perhaps just a prickle of fear. Don’t imagine Arthur’s uneasy smile and simple compliment, because even if he may not love her—even if he hasn’t quite decided to leave her just yet—he has to act like it, and this is the least he can do. She smiles back.
Don’t imagine Arthur, newly widowed, coming home with Faroe and bundling her up in the clothes her mother had worked so hard to make. Don’t imagine his twinge of guilt each time he can’t bring himself to do up all those delicate hand-sewn buttons and hands her off to Tess instead. Don’t imagine that after Faroe is dead and gone and buried, the clothes still linger, sitting prettily and untouched in their drawers until the moths get to them and what remains is left behind for Daniel to collect when Arthur finally leaves Boston.
Don’t imagine Daniel’s eyes and hands, teary and calloused, as he holds the clothes his daughter made and granddaughter wore, or his remorse and anger at things he can no longer change. Don’t imagine him tucking the scraps of fabric safely into a box below the stairs, folding each with care while he thumbs over the ragged moth-eaten holes, and mentally making note to find someone, another seamstress maybe, to patch them up. He never does.

Now that I think about it, I wonder how much the crew keeping Izzy around after Ed shot him contributed to Ed's decision to commit suicide.
I find it impossible to believe Ed didn't know they were keeping Izzy onboard by the start of s2e2. Frenchie is acting suspicious as hell, and Ed's smart and generally good at reading people.
So, let's imagine this whole thing from Ed's perspective. He had no reason to think Izzy was genuinely trying to reach out with the "talk it through" comment, he thought Izzy was goading him again. The last time Ed dared to have feelings, Izzy threatened him about it. So Ed takes it out in front of everyone, his suicidal behavior gets worse as he waves a gun around his own head (he has to be thinking he's not doing a good enough job of being Blackbeard, since Izzy seems to be catching on), and then he shoots Izzy after Izzy blames Ed's behavior on "your feelings for Stede Bonnet."
Ed has complicated feelings about Izzy, that much is obvious. But in that moment? I imagine he had to be at least a bit relieved. Maybe, with Izzy gone, he can find the courage to go back to being Ed-
But the crew don't kill him. They keep him onboard, and they hide him from Ed. From the crew's perspective, sympathy for Izzy is understandable - they have no idea what Izzy said to Ed, so it just seems to them that Ed is taking out all his depression and anger on Izzy for some reason.
By allowing the crew to believe that Ed is just taking things out on Izzy for no apparent reason, by failing to ever own up to what he did to make Ed feel so threatened and afraid and upset, Izzy turns the narrative against Ed, and I believe that contributed to how Ed just lost all hope here.
Ed probably felt so isolated, and misunderstood, and like things would never be able to look up for him, ever again. I don't think it's a surprise Ed seems to really commit to suicide after this.
"He was your friend" hurts. It makes me so sad, thinking about what Ed must have felt when Jim said that to him. I have to think this contributed to Ed's feeling that he's fundamentally unlovabe - Izzy threatened him, kicked him when he was down, and now he has to watch Izzy get all the sympathy Ed was never afforded. And, again, it makes sense from the crew's perspective, and Ed's never even tried to explain his side of the situation, but...yikes.
Is there any wonder Ed called Izzy an "indestructable little fucker?" He just couldn't be free of Izzy in these first few episodes, and even when Izzy was being kept below decks, he was still contributing to keeping Ed isolated from the crew. Of course Ed just kept getting worse mentally, he had absolutely no support system.

this is incredibly fucked up, but. thinking about the way infant mortality rates and generally the way kids are treated/raised on kamino would influence the clones' concept of kids and when a person becomes a person. like. "it's not a person until it's out of the gestation tube" or "it's not a person until it can pick it's own name" or "it's not a person until it's passed it's first assessments" or "it's not a person until it can consciously decide it's a person" like when does a clone fetus stop being a product in production and start being a person? or is there any line at all, and they are both at all times? how is the perception of clone fetuses and cadets going to influence how clones interact with kids off kamino? or how they view their own kids, if they have them?
