66. Staring At The Other’s Lips, Trying Not To Kiss Them, Before Giving In

"It's tradition," Soap says.

That's a lie. Ghost knows it's a lie. He's certain that Hogmanay is some kind of fever dream of a bunch of cooped-up Scots eager for partying catharsis. They have weird rituals throughout the year anyway, with haggis and whatever, but this one that Soap's insisting on—

"No," Ghost replies, firmly.

Soap pouts. Pouts. Bottom lip out and all. And no one could blame Ghost for staring. Soap's an easy man to stare at, handsome as they come, features arranged perfectly. It's just that when he's insisting that it's Hogmanay tradition to kiss the first person you see regardless of who they are, it's hard to think of anything else.

"Don't make me kiss Price," Soap complains. "If I turn around and he's there, I'm gonna have to."

He's right. Price is right there, three glasses of Scotch deep, throwing his hat up like a graduation cap and giving a too-pleased, drunken 'wheeee' as it falls back down. And Gaz is encouraging him, approaching with dangerous intent and a fresh bottle in hand.

Which means they're all going to get more pissed, and then Ghost will probably to do something he'll regret.

Might as well get it over with now.

He pulls his mask up quickly, swooping in and pressing his lips to Soap's. They're just as warm and plush as he imagined; however, he'll never admit that Soap's surprised gasp does something to him. That's for the tomorrow edition of him to work through while holed up in a quiet, dark corner.

When he backs up, Soap's looking up at him with wide, happy eyes, like he's seeing Ghost properly for the first time. Ghost, in turn, shoves his hands into his hoodie's pockets and tries not to look too moody. "Happy?" he asks.

"Very," Soap replies, and pulls him back in for another one before he can say no.

75. Kisses Meant To Distract The Other Person From Whatever They Were Intently Doing 

"Hey. Hey, eyes on me, Sergeant."

Soap does his best, but the most he can manage is rolling his head vaguely in Ghost's direction, eyelids feeling too heavy to accomplish much more than a weak blink. It's easier to let them rest.

"Johnny."

"'m here," Soap mumbles. He feels one of Ghost's hands over his, pressing hard to the weeping wound on his abdomen. He's aware how close it is to his stomach, but the worst of the pain is smothered by every chemical his brain's seen fit to give him. The pressure snares some of that pain to the surface, and he hisses through his teeth.

"You have to stay with me, Johnny," Ghost says, voice heavy with command. "That's an order."

Soap thinks he smiles, even though it feels like puppetry, pulling all the wrong strings to make his face work. "Aye aye, sir," he mutters.

However much time passes, Soap couldn't say. All he registers are Ghost's hands on him—one over his, the other on his face—and the frantic radio chatter that fades in and out of his hearing. He's far more focused on staying awake for Ghost's sake—staying alive. It's harder than it looks, and he's cognizant of how much effort it takes to breathe, to swallow, to blink.

Ghost says his name again, lower now, less like a lieutenant and more like himself. Like Simon. That strikes Soap as funny.

Simon says stay awake.

Simon says don't leave me.

Simon says I love you, you absolute bastard.

Simon kisses him like it's the last thing he might ever get to do.

And when he does, for just a second, it's easier to breathe.

Speaking of cookouts- Simon is at all of them, corona in hand and helping babysit the grill and fryer and just listen to chatter. It’s not that he doesnt want to engage, it’s just he’s waiting for the meats cause they smell delicious and heart stopping cause the burgers are great and the rice and beans are to die for- also someone had him try a chicharron with some lime and now he’s ready to dog every piece of food coming his way cause no tia or abuela would let any of these grown men go hungry for even a millisecond…

Just eat your meats first before one of the guys takes it from you

Do you think they could boil eggs?

Easily! VERY easily. But it may not be done all too often because eggs would be quite valuable. It's a pivotal binding agent for cooking. Dough, meatloaf, kibble…

They don't have access to an egg-laying domestic bird like a chicken, so they would have to forage wild eggs. On top of it, they would want to avoid taking the eggs of vulnerable species like curlews and songbirds to keep their numbers high.

ShadowClan would actually have access to a lot of eggs in the Lake Territory, because pine forests are home to a lot of birds and insects, with fewer mammals than deciduous forest. RiverClan's ducks and swans would also give them lots to work with; which could be shared by RiverClan's marshes.

Egg-centric dishes would be deeeelicious, like deviled eggs, "egg salad" with chopped fish, omelettes, egg drop soup.... mmgh. I'll add an egg entry to the to-do list.

when i said i'd do it i maybe lied. although. i know i've talked about the way he modifies his accent on here before and i'm genuinely fascinated by how he speaks. thesis is he consciously weakens his accent around people he doesn't know well/who aren't spanish speakers; broadly just reflects whatever his vibe is in front of media; doesn't modify it in front of close friends. like he’s spanish and he won’t let you forget it!! but he’s also hyper-aware of Being Perceived

like I actually don't have TIME to listen to him talking to the entire grid and I don't care enough about most people who aren't him to do that. so. notable accent stuff off the top of my head? the mclaren challenge where lando's ribbing him for his pronunciation and he whips out a genuinely decent bri'ish accent (3:23). fascinating. he can do it, chooses not to. meet him where he is or don't talk to him at all. deeeelicious. his 2018 beyond the grid podcast episode is so 🔎... like, even the way he pronounces certain words is audibly different. gotta assume he's hyper-conscious of being understood. 🥺. compare it to interviews from last year and you really hear it imo. recently? since the break I think his accent has weakened across conversation settings. like, this chat with lewis, and this interview... i'm not a linguist so idk terminology but he's not over-pronouncing the words like he often does, y'know? in general I think his accent was weakest at mclaren - maybe it's being in the uk? but then around lando I think you can literally hear him modify it less with time, and they both, like, mirror the way each other says things for giggles. it's similarly strong around rupert. charles too, but they're both on the same no-modification page, which is fun in itself. he uses less fillers in english too like he's SO engaged when he speaks it it's all very very intentional!!! come here boy 🔬

ALSO notable is his (english) music taste. which is ALSO ignored in the scholarship and I intend to address that someday.

Anyway! Random question time: what's a self-indulgent thing in writing fanfics that you want to do but hasn't so far?

Eheheh thank you Xela! I'm glad you liked it (just saw your tags on the fic!). I feel like something like this was out of my wheelhouse but so much fun to write! I've written Unknown a few times now, but I'm pretty sure this was the first time I took it in this direction. It's always super interesting to get into his brain and put him in situations. He's such an interesting character.

As for the Yandere Saeyoung you mentioned in those tags, don't get me started!! I think he has the potential to be just as bad if not worse (and drowning in denial over what he's doing). It would all start from hm feeling a need to 'protect' the MC. Cue him tapping their phone, following them around (in person and through CCTV) and maybe even meeting them while in disguise. It would be deeeelicious.

Also! For the random question let's see...

I mean the most obvious answer is Knight Luciel and AUs of that sort. They're so far out of my knowledge set and I don't think I could ever do them any sort of justice. I think those will stay in my head for now.

Also, is it obvious to say smut? I remember when I first started writing I got embarrassed over writing any sort of intimacy and now I can handle a small amount of spice. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to that level of comfort but writing myself a few smut fics about Saeyoung would be the definition of self-indulgent.

There is that half-drafted V route 707xMC AU I have lying around somewhere that I started last year. The whole thing is still a bit wonky but I think with time it could be something good and super self-indulgent. Think DSMN but even worse bc V is alive heheheh

Finally... Before starting this account I used to want to write a fully fleshed out multichap fic of 707s route, filling in the gaps that we were missing based on calls and CGs. I've done a few one offs filling in some gaps but there's always more I want to say. Maybe when I find the time and motivation I'll write that one day 👀
