A rant/defending Cho Sangwoo actions

I love him so much he's such a complex and good written character, and this is basically just me ranting about my babygirl

So the first thing that i want to clarify is the reason why he joined the squid game, many people just immediately assumed that he wanted the money all for himself which is wrong. Personally, i think he DID joined the game for the money (obviously everyone did) BUT he also wanted to win the money for his mother. He wanted to show his mom that he is actually successful and to make her proud (obviously his mom is already so proud of him, but he doesn't know that). Also he literally was being hunted down by the police because he embezzled money from his client, so he definitely needed the money to pay all of that money off and bail himself out of jail. Obviously by the end, he kind of got money hungry, I won't deny that. I also want to remind you guys that the squid game is literally a last resort for EVERYONE in the game.

I feel like this is one of the big reason why people hate him which is, he killed Sae-Byeok and Ali. Even though I'm a Sang-Woo fan, i still BAWLED my eyes out when Ali or Sae-Byeok died, but i feel like it is understandable why he killed them both. Now let's start with Ali first. He doesn't even know Ali THAT long, he had only known him for LESS THAN A WEEK. So the fact that he betrayed Ali and took all of the marbles, i wouldn't really say that it's "selfish". Let's try to put on Sang-Woo's perspective for a second, "you're in a Life or Death game in which if you LOSE, you're never gonna see the light of day ever again, and you're playing against this guy, you've known him for 5 days (?) and he is WINNING, this is NOT good, obviously. If he does win, you'll die. You start to think of your mother back at home, who would take care of her? She's old and she's can't take care of herself, you're her only family left. You can't just leave her alone right? You're in this game because you wanted to help her, make her live a comfortable life without worries about money or food on the table. You CAN'T just die right now. No. You NEED to live. You need to WIN. For her. For your mother. And lucky for you, your opponent seems to be gullible, maybe you can win this afterall. I mean yeah, you're gonna indirectly kill him but... he's just a nobody. You've known for like what.. 5 days? He's not as important as your mom, right? Sure, he probably has a family but that's his own problem. Everyone in this game have a family, everyone wanted to survive. So, you betrayed him, sure u do feel guilty, but hey, it's the battle of the strongest right?" So basically, would you choose a random stranger you just met or your family? If you really think about it, Sangwoo was being very reasonable here.

Okay so now about Sae-Byeok's death, okay so let's be realistic for a second. Sae-Byeok's would've died from blood loss either way if Sang-woo didn't kill her. A glass shard literally stabbed her in the stomach and there was no way in hell the guards or the frontman were gonna treat her for it. There was only two options for her, dying slowly from blood loss or getting killed by Sang-woo, which was much more faster. Sang-Woo's reasons for killing her was that if Sae-Byeok and Gi-Hun voted to leave, they'll be the majority it need to stop the games. So I could definitely see where he's coming from, i mean imagine you literally just saw HUNDREDS of people died, you already killed 2 people, you ALMOST died and you haven't showered or eaten a proper meal for almost a week, ALL FOR THE 45.6 BILLION WON BUT THEN TURNS OUT YOU'RE PROBABLY JUST DID ALL OF THAT FOR NOTHING BECAUSE YOU'RE GONNA GET OUTVOTED BY TWO PEOPLE. So basically you just got a whole lot of trauma, YOU'RE STILL BROKE, the police are coming to get you and you can't see your mom because you're ashamed of yourself. Like damn, i would've done the same ngl....

"He didn't tell Gi-Hun what the second game was even though he knew!" Okay so yes i do agree with this, i think he should've told Gi-Hun about it! But if you hate Sang-woo for that reason then Gi-Hun deserve to be hated too, he did the exact same thing with the old man in the marble game. He lied and let the old man lose so he could have the advantage and win. THIS JUST SHOWS THAT THE GAME WAS DESIGNED TO BRING THE WORST OUT OF PEOPLE!!!! EVEN GI-HUN, OUR MAIN CHARACTER, LIED AND INDIRECTLY KILLED SOMEONE! (obviously the old guy didn't die but Gi-Hun didn't know that).

"Sang-woo didn't care about his mother." First of all, NO????? WHERE THE HELL DID U GET THAT FROM??? Like i said from the beginning, his mom was ONE OF THE REASON why he joined the games anyway! He didn't want to go back home and be a disappoinment to EVERYONE. Literally if you guys remember, his mom and Gi-Hun wasn't the only one who keeps bragging about him attending SNU, EVEYONE IN THE TOWN LITERALLY CALLED HIM "The genius of Ssamun-Dong". Further-more, his LAST WORDS were literally "Gi-Hun.... take care... of my mom.." WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE NEVER CARED FOR HER????

"He didn't feel guilty or remorseful after what he'd done." Okay so... did u watched the show with your eyes closed? Look i know he killed some people but he's still HUMAN. He FLINCHED when he heard the gunshot that shot Ali. His mental state was getting worse day by day. Right before he stab himself in the neck, he said "Hyung.... I'm sorry.." and I think he said that not only because he was apologizing for killing Sae-Byeok but also to just say sorry for every single thing he had done up until that moment. The guilt was obviously eating him alive.

The reason why he killed himself. He was already suicidal from the beginning, in episode 2, he tried to kill himself. He thinks living is just not worth it anymore, he has lost hope in humanity. Squid game was his last resort to try and fix his mistake. Maybe he can finally be the son his mother was proud of. The only reason why he killed himself at the end was because he trusted Gi-Hun. He trusted him to take care of his mom. He knew he couldn't live his life with the guilt of killing his childhood bestfriend. He knew Gi-Hun is a nice guy and would help his mother. He knew Gi-Hun would use the money to do something good. Like i said, he trusted him. At that point, Sang-woo thinks this was the best case scenario, him dying and Gi-Hun living. So in that moment, he chose to kill himself.

Okaayyyy you guys I have answers for you literally no one asked for

So I often see people ask "how do so many people defend Inho but hate Sangwoo?"

And the answer is - the 50$ theory.

So if you have 50$ in your pocket and you lose it, but then you find it after a while, you'll be extremely happy, right?

But if you walk down the street and find 50$ but then lose it, you'll be upset.

Even though both situations sum up to the same outcome - you neither lose nor gain money, in the first scenario you end up being happy because you realized you didn't lose what you thought you lost, and in the second one you end up being sad because of the exact opposite.

The same goes for Sangwoo and Inho.

You first see Sangwoo as Gihun's childhood friend who graduated from SNU™️ and you expect him to be a good friend and kind person, so when he acts evil you're disappointed in him and have negative feelings.

For Inho it's the exact opposite, you know he's the Frontman so you expect him to be the epitome of evil. So when he shows the tiniest glimpse of humanity you're just so surprised and can't help but feel positive.

And even though Inho did things x1000 worse than what Sangwoo did we still kinda defend him more? All because of the ORDER in which they both did their good and bad deeds

the squid game fandom has a crazy problem with believing just because they like a character, or because a character is a good person, that the character should’ve lived. i hear this so often with sae byeok & ali. now, i obviously understand sangwoo wasn’t a stand-up guy (arguably, imo), to say the least, & i do agree his betrayal of ali was wrong (i don’t think anyone’s arguing that) but that does not mean ali should have lived. he died when he needed to die & sangwoo needed to live because the story demands it; sangwoos death happened because ali’s did. i love ali as much as the next guy but i know he needed to die when he did.

where many more may disagree is sae byeoks death. there was no way she could’ve made it. say she survived after losing so much blood, she’d be too weak to win against a much more bloodful person. her death would’ve been much more long & painful, sangwoo put her out of her misery.

i know a lot of fans of the show paint sangwoo as unapologetic for his actions & as a heartless individual but a solid handful of his character later on is rooted in his guilt.

having a character that lives because they are a good person defeats part of the message the show works endlessly hard to convey.

Ok so idk why but it kinda pisses me off when some people say that Sang-woo was a misogynist. Don't get me wrong, yeah I get where it's coming from and why someone would assume that, but I really think he isn't 💔💔💔

The whole theory comes from the thing he said before the third game (tug of war) like "we need more men cause they're usually better at stuff" And honestly I don't get why people get so pressed about it. He didn't say anything like "yeah women are worse than men", he basically said "statistically men have an advantage in most things and we're fighting for our lives so it's better to choose the safer option by bringing more men to our team". He had a REASON to say that, it's not that he hated women, he just wanted to survive, smh...

Another thing some people mention is how he interacts with women overall, but I still think it's kind of a dumb argument. The only semi-negative interactions he had with a girl is with Mi-nyeo, and that's probably because she was lowk harrasing him in that moment before marbles and because she was overall being annoying af.

Ali was what humanity aspired to be, Sangwoo was how humanity turned out. Y/n smiled at Sangwoo, his eyes full of love. "I can't believe we've been married for a year.." He thought back to the wedding, smiling. He'd cried so much happy tears that day, finally a day just about him and Sangwoo. Their happy day that they can always look back on and celebrate every year on going forward. "Time flys past, doesn't it?" Sangwoo smiled, grabbing y/n's hand and pulling him up to stand. Y/n looked and him with a pout. "The foods gonna get co-" Sangwoo silenced him with a small kiss, resting their foreheads together. "Just a small dance, I promise it won't get cold. It's piping hot as well," He reassured. Y/n sighed and let Sangwoo pull him into a slow waltz, moving together and letting the others presence fill in the comfortable silence. "I love you, so much. More than anything and anyone ever." Sangwoo whispered out. Y/n leaned to kiss his cheek, smiling at the small blush that covered his cheeks. "I've never had someone to love as much as you, yknow. You're the first person to ever really love me. I don't think I could ever love anyone else, Mr. Sangwoo Cho~" Sangwoo smiled warmly and kissed y/n. The two enjoyed the moment. This was their space, their time together. It was only them. Just them. Nothing else could ruin this. They were finally happy.

Y/n giggled as he sat down. "You still blush like you did the first kiss I ever gave you yknow~" He teased. Sangwoo rolled his eyes and took a bite of the food, it luckily cooling down a bit. "You're just special to me." Y/n dramatically gasped and held a hand over his mouth. Sangwoo raised a brow. Y/n being dramatic? A daily occurrence. "The Sangwoo being a romantic?!" He yelled out. Sangwoo another bite, watching y/n act like a child waving their arms around. "You're starting to sound like Gi-Hun." He grimaced. Y/n laughed and took a bite of his own food, eyes lighting up. Sangwoo never failed to make delicious meals. "I take that as a compliment! Your dear Gi-Hun is a gifted man, very smart and funny if I say so myself." Sangwoo hummed, tilting his head. "And I thought I was your husband?" He held back a smile, knowing y/n would immediately defend himself.

Y/n narrowed his eyes on Sangwoo. "Oi! You know what I meant!" Sangwoo chuckled and nodded, amused. Y/n huffed and took a few bites of his food. He thought of a way to get back at Sangwoo, a lightbulb going off in his head as he grinned. He rested his elbow on the table and put his head on his hand. He gave a lazy grin at Sangwoo. "Mm, remember the proposal Sangwoo? How embarrassed you were?" Sangwoo froze, staring at y/n. Out of all things, that was the one thing that he got the most embarrassed about.

Y/n grinned as he watched Sangwoo stare out at the park, the light posts and moon shining light down on the blooming flowers and new forming shrubs. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the soft velvet box. Today was the day, he'd propose. He slowly kneeled down behind Sangwoo and took a deep breath before clearing his throat. Sangwoo curiously turned his head, breath stopping once seeing y/n down on one knee. 'He can't be..' He thought, hands twitching. Y/n gave a loving smile. "Sangwoo I- you've done so much to save me and love me, more than anyone has ever done. Without you, I would be dead right now. It feels like I was never really alive until you showed up, and now I never want to be without you. And just like we promised, I want to get married..so will you? Marry me?" He held back his tears, opening the box and revealing the shining ring. Sangwoo stared at the ring, looking back at y/n. In a quick motion he leaned down and hugged him, crying into his shoulder. "Yes..please yes.." He muttered out. Y/n finally letting himself cry as well and hug back. One thing he never thought he'd do, he was finally able to do. He was going to be married to the love of his life.

Sangwoo groaned into his hands as y/n gushed about how cute he was with a red face. "You were so stunned! And you wouldn't let go of me for like a day!" Y/n cooed, giggling to himself. Sangwoo looked at him, with a pout. "You'd be stunned if you suddenly on a date got proposed to!" Y/n shrugged. "No way of telling!~ Besides, you're just trynna get out of the fact that you were so cute!~"

Y/N was brought into a warehouse, filled with only a table and two chairs. The Frontman stood next to the table, and a man sat in one of the chairs. He looked pale, shaking. Y/N sat down in the other chair, opposite of the man. His hand was strapped onto a small machine by a second guard, just like his opponents. The Frontman smiled under his mask. "Let the Game begin~" Chin-Mae texted Sangwoo, knowing he was done for the day already.

Sangwoo stared at his phone, cursing under his breath. He hurried out the building and stood on the sidewalk, staring at the address Chin-Mae texted him. He quickly checked where it was and began making his way over. What the actual fuck was wrong with the Frontman? Y/n had finally been getting better and recovering. He was going to get in the way of that, ruin all of his progress and push him into a deeper pit. He couldn't let that happen, he had to help for once.
