Mad Max and Desertpunk
Tumblr media
It's punk-o-clock and someone really should finally agree on how we are gonna call those kinda stories and how we are gonna define them. I have read so far:
Dustpunk
Rustpunk
Desertpunk
The Apunkalypse
And some people say those are different things, but reading over the different descriptions I gotta say: "They sound pretty much the same to me."
There might be an argument made that "The Apunkalypse" is a subgenre and then Desertpunk/Rustpunk/Dustpunk is one subgenre - and Oceanpunk can be another one... But the three formerly named once pretty much sound the same to me. Big drought. Desertification of large chunks of area. And often enough they do involve cars in a major roles as the best way to cross the desert.
And I talked about it before: But I freaking LOVE Mad Max, especially Mad Max Fury Road. God, I love this movie so much. Just... Yeah... Love. Pure love. Best movie.
And I would argue that no matter what we call that genre (I would argue that Desertpunk is the best name) that especially Mad Max Fury Road and Tank Girl are the prime examples of it. Why? Well, you know it. Because they are the most... punk.
Mad Max as a series definitely starts not out as very punk, given that Max is in the beginning literally a cop. Road Warrior and Thunderdome definitely have some punk themes and aesthetics in there, but they do not go there the full way. Meanwhile Fury Road is all like: "Smash that toxic patriarchy and metaphor for capitalism!" And I am all there for it.
Tank Girl of course is even less subtle. Both the comics and the movie are just openly punk. Tank Girl herself is a punk, wearing punk attire and literally fighting capitalism, while also being very openly bisexual. I love it.
And I think that is what should differentiate Desertpunk from just your average Post-Apocalyptic storystelling. If you have a post-apocalypse in which just everyone is out for themselves with maybe small survivor groups battling each other... I mean, you could still tell a punk story in there by focusing on the community and mutual aid aspect of punk, but in general most stories in those settings are not, in fact, punk.
But if you put in some sort of institution with people who try to exploit the post-apocalypse for their advantage? Yeah, fuck. That's so darn punk.
Ironically, Desertpunk is probably the Punkpunk genre, for which I can think of the clearest examples of PUNK in there. Kinda funny how it goes. But given that I love both Fury Road and Tank Girl so fucking much as movies... I definitely want to see more of this!

I think the most important thing I've learned from @imissthembutitwasntadisaster is that not everything has to be written. settings and backstories can be vague and left to the reader's imagination, can just be vibes and ideas and a backdrop to the characters and stories taking place, and that doesn't make the worldbuilding any less good. in fact, when used right, it can make the worldbuilding RICHER, because it ISN'T fully fleshed out. it just exists as what it needs to be.
Gracie also taught me that every character has a Taylor Swift song and an MCR song that are theirs and that's a really good way to analyze and/or develop them

OH OH zombie apocalypse!luke just triggered something in me. cause imagine luke taking on the protector role with annabeth after everything goes to shit, and him encountering you and percy (and you almost knocking him out with a bat) in a deserted city…… oh the brainworms are worming alright — 🍒
slight gore (zombie killing); fem!reader
you still have the bat raised over your shoulder and aimed for the boy. there's a girl behind him, shorter, younger, maybe percy's age, but she watches you with eyes as watchful as her protector. she analyzes you, probably taking in the scars on your arms and the dried blood splattered along the metal of your bat. if they try anything to hurt you or percy, you won't be afraid to add their blood to the collection.
"what d'you guys want?" when percy speaks with venom in his voice, you aren't shocked one bit. you spare a glance his way and find him standing next to you instead of behind, one hand clasped around the hilt of his sword and the other twitching with anticipation.
he looks at you. slow down, you try to tell him.
you don't know if you interpret his look right, but if you do it says: speed up.
"hey, take it easy."
the words of the stranger in front of you removes you and percy from your hard stares. the boy's words are understanding, they're similar to your thoughts, but his hand—the one not holding a large duffle bag that whispers your name—wrapped around the hilt of a still-sheathed sword and the look in his eyes contradict any pacifism. the girl behind him has a similar look but more calculating, as if she's planning an escape route here and now.
"we don't want any trouble," the boy continues.
you can hear percy's eye roll in his words. "yeah, sure you don't."
"look, why don't you take the hand off of the sword and we can both go our separate ways." your suggestion is simple and falsely diplomatic. you know they won't go for it in the same way you wouldn't go for it.
it's surprising whenever the boy removes his hand from his weapon.
the girl behind him scoffs. you can't see her holding anything, but there is no way she isn't armed. not with a look as deadly as that.
"you're the ones holding weapons. shouldn't we be telling you that?"
before you or percy can respond, the boy does.
"annabeth," he says her name in a warning, his arm reaching out and shielding her body. even though the gesture presents itself as him protecting her from you and percy, you can't help but feel like it's the opposite. "chill. just do what she says."
annabeth's hand comes into view.
"and ..." percy hesitates and in the space filled you know his words will definitely be of the fighting kind. "hand over your weapons too while you're at it."
the boy rolls his eyes. "yeah, like hell."
percy repeats his demand with a firmer tone. it does nothing but provoke the boy more.
"what the hell do you want from us anyway?"
"what do we want from you?" you lift the bat a little higher and tighten your stance, preparing to swing if needed. "you're the ones trespassing."
as soon as the words leave your mouth, you regret them. you can feel percy's glare at your side, ignoring it doesn't do anything to make it go away. but you push your shoulders further back with false confidence.
"you guys stay back there?" the boy nods towards the gate behind you, one that leads to the jackpot of a home you and percy have been able to live in for a while now, only leaving during times like these to grab absolutely necessary items.
"what's it to you?" percy's accent starts to slip out and you know the blood is rushing to his heart and hands, preparing him for a fight.
the boy takes his hand off of the weapon again. you let your stance falter just a bit. "let us stay with you."
"like hell!" jesus, how is it that this boy has been standing in front of you for no more than ten minutes and you're already picking up his mannerisms? there is something about him. something you would've daydreamed about if you weren't in this situation. if the dead weren't walking the streets you would've laid on your stomach in your bed and created scenarios involving this—admittedly attractive—stranger.
"we've got supplies. you have a home. let's make a trade. just for a few days."
your eyebrows raise as you scan the exposed parts of their bodies. "why for a few days? either of you bit?"
the girl shakes her head. "no. herd up ahead. we need to wait it out."
you don't trust it, but the familiar step-slide of a walker comes from down the street. almost in tandem, all four of your heads turns towards it.
the boy steps forward the same time that you do.
"i got it," he tells you, finally unsheathing his sword and approaching the walker in one fluid movement. with one swipe of the weapon, he has the head of the walker chopped off and then the skull pierced with the tip of his sword with a quick jerk. you must admit it's an alluring sight, and you hope it isn't your hormones and desire speaking when you agree to let them stay with you.
but just for a few days.

broken promises (lee minho x gn!reader)

tags: post-apocalypse!au, angst, hurt without comfort
warnings: mentions of death, blood and wounds
A/N: this is something ive never done before so please bear with me😶‍🌫️ also eunji is a made up character solely for this fic and she isnt based on anyone in particular ^^ i hope you'll enjoy my little experiment and please remember that feedback and reblogs are highly appreciated🫶🏽
the cold wind lazily made its way though your hair, bringing you back to reality. you looked around at the disaster in front of you. the city was destroyed and almost deserted, only a little people left to fight. the rest of them went south - it was told the life there would be better, but you didn’t really believe it. nowhere was life any better now. you noticed a woman with a little girl walking down the street. she made eye contant with you - her face was covered in burn scars and a few fresh wounds. she threw you a sad smile, seeing you weren’t doing any better. the girl waved at you, her arm covered in blood as well. you tried to wave back, but it came out a bit wobbly and you sighed, defeated. suddenly you felt a gentle tap on your arm. you abruptly threw your head up only to see eunji standing in the doorway. she took a step forward, sitting next to you. you took her hand in yours and rubbed it with your thumb. “how are you feeling?” you asked her softly. “i’m okay, don’t worry.” you hummed at her words and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
it was truly a miracle that she was alive. you had met eunji a few months before, she was wanderng around a small town nearby without anything to eat or drink. she slept where she could and was constantly running away, scared that someone will eventually kill her. you didn’t have heart to leave her alone and decided to help and protect her. she was unsure at the beginning, but you weren’t surprised. you took your time to earn her trust, letting he know with your actions that you wanted only to make her safe. your heart ached, looking at her, so scared and vulnerable, yet wise and independent. you thought to yourself that no twelve-year-old shouldn’t be so mature for their age. she was a kid, she should be playing around with her friends and not worrying about a thing. after a few weeks though, she finally opened herself up in front of you, letting you sooth her aching soul and create a shelter for her. she told you about her past and about her mother, whom she lost contact with at the very beginning of the apocalypse. you started treating her like your little sister and made a promise to yourself to stay with her to help her find her mum and make sure she grows up in a safe place, away from hunger, poverty and death.
“what are you thinking about?” eunji asked you suddenly, seeing your worried gaze. you shook your head and smiled faintly. “future. i want us to finally be happy,” you whispered, holding back tears that were starting to pool in your eyes. she hugged you tightly, burying her head in your chest. “as long as you’re with me then i’m happy,” she said simply and you giggled, sniffing. how could a kid be so wise? “oh, also,” eunji sat straight again and looked you in the eyes. “minho woke up.”
you ran through the corridors of the building, trying to get to minho’s room as quickly as possible. on your way you bumped into jisung and he grabbed your arms, steadying you so you wouldn’t fall. “whoa, careful. are you going to see minho?” you nodded fratically, panting. he smiled at you. “alright, go. he’s waiting for you.”
you quietly entered the room, not wanting to startle minho. you closed the door and heard him grumble in pain. “is that my guardian angel? am i in heaven?” he uttered when he finally noticed you and you giggled at that. “yah, don’t you dare talking about dying. i did everything i could to save you, dummy,” you sat at the edge of his bed, runing your fingers through his hair. he leaned into your touch, closing his eyes and humming in content. “i missed you,” he whispered. “can you give me a kiss?” you cooed at him and leaned over to place a gentle peck on his dry, cracked lips, savouring the moment that you missed so much. “alright lover boy, we have to change your bandages,” you said when you broke the kiss, caressing his cheek. you got up to gather all the stuff and came back to the bed, placing everything on the bedside table and turning to face minho again. “can you sit up?” he nodded and using his hands, tried to get up a bit. you helped him and soon he was sitting with his back pressed to the wall. you lifted up his shirt, ripping out the old bandage from his tummy and gently disinfecting his wound with the last bottle of iodine left after the treatments you had performed on the survivors in your camp. minho hissed at the feeling and you whispered a small “i’m sorry”, trying to be as gentle as possible. “how is everyone doing?” he asked you and you shrugged your shoulders. “well, it depends. some of us still haven’t recovered and we lost a few people as well…” you mumbled, tears welling in your eyes. minho took your hand in his, stopping your actions, and carefully brought you to his chest, bringing you comfort. “it’s okay, at least we have each other, hm?” he responded in this soft voice of his and you wiped your eyes, nodding. you came back to changing his bandages soon after, trying to calm down. minho intently analized your face, seeing all the worry and sorrow in your eyes. he hated to see you like this. he felt really protective over you and wanted nothing but the best for you. minho always made sure to guide you safely through the tough times and provide you with food and clean clothes. the only things he wanted for you was to be safe and sound, just like you wanted for eunji. “when we finally go south, i’ll build you a house there and we’ll settle down.” you stopped in your tracks when you heard his dreamy voice. “when we go south?” you muttered and minho’s eyes widened, looking at your furrowed brows. “yeah, you know, when i recover we can pack our stuff and leave the city. it’s destroyed anyway, so why even stay here,” he reasoned, confused by your reaction. “i told you so many times i’m gonna stay here, i have to take care of eunji,” you responded, feeling as the tears started to make their way down your face. you didn’t dare to look him in the eyes, scared that if you do, your heart will shatter into million of pieces. your hands started shaking, so you rushed youself and messily placed the new bangade over minho’s wound. you started gathering your stuff, wanting nothing but to leave the room and let yourself calm down.
minho always suggested the two of you going south, he wanted to do it even before the apocalypse was over, but every time you told him you had to stay in the city, to help the survivos and take care of eunji. you couldn’t just leave her here and taking her with you would mean she would mean she wouldn’t be able to find her mum. you also wanted to just simply stay where you were born, not having the heart to leave behind the place you grew up in. was is selfish? perhaps, but in times like these you had to consider yourself first in some cases. “yn, come on, i thought we talked this though,” minho started, his firm tone sending a shiver down your spine. “‘talked this through?’ minho, what the fuck? do you even listen to me?” you hissed through gritted teeth, feeling your cheeks grow warmer from the anger builidng inside you. “i told you i’m not gonna leave this place, not now, not in a month, never! i simply wanna stay here and help to rebuild the city,” you continued, your voice started breaking in the middle of each word and your vision was getting more and more blurry. “i have to take care of eunji as well.” it was minho’s time to scoff. “really? you’re still talking about eunji? there’s so many people here that could take care of her, it’s not like you’re the only one who could help her,” he responded angrily, his face scrunching at the pain from his wounds. “but i promised her! i told her i’ll help her and she trusted me!” you cried, screaming at the top of your lungs. “she should learn that people sometimes break the promises, that’s how life works!” you looked at him in disbelief, shocked that these words left his mouth. you looked at him and you swore everyone in the world could hear your heart sink. you couldn’t believe he said that, but you finally saw his true self. “people break the promises, huh?” you whispered, fidgeting with the ring on your finger. after a moment of hesitation you took it off and threw it at minho. “then i’m gonna break one too,” you stated, heading towards the door. “yn, wait! i didn’t mean it like that!” you heard minho scream, pleading, but you ignored him, shutting the door behind you and heading to find eunji. at least one promise won’t be broken.

Hey guys, um I know I got a fic going on but I've been playing a lot of zombie apocalypse games as of late. Should I make a fun hazbin fic AU about it? Like here me out.
Charlie: She'd wield like a sniper rifle or hunting rifle she'd got from her dad. And be the driver/leader of the group with her yelling "Sorry!" To each zombie she runs over cause I can totally see it.
Vaggie: I'm thinking gunslinger like using desert eagles and being a pretty damn good shot, with also a shotgun for fun.
Angel: Classic, tommy, and uzi guns for my guy. He'd be the morale boost since he seems to me like the kinda guy who'd come up with fun and sexy games.
Husk: This guy would be apart of the bar area but also the team medic, he'd wield his cards but also keep an assault rifle under his bar.
Alastor: The guy you'd hear on the radio because there is always one. He'd be the scout and recon since his broadcast can reach far. He'd wield a sword cane, plus his own hunting rifle.
Sir Pentious: The workshop and ammunition maker of the group, he'd build the gang bombs and special tools to deal with zombies, plus I see him with a big fuck you mini gun.
Cherri: Rocket launcher nuff said, nah I'm kidding as she'd also have grenades plus a grenade launcher. Plus she'd be the second driver since her massive truck would rip apart zombies if the group needed a supply run.
Niffty: Our cook of the group, she'd have a dagger and also be useful in recon too due to her size and stealth. As for a gun, would you really give this girl one? But if needed, I'd say she's got a sub machine gun.

in another life
pairing(s) carl grimes x fem!reader (platonic)
synopsis carl and y/n were best friends right from the start and they would die best friends too.
warning(s) death, angst, hurt no comfort
masterlist
a/n sorry this is actually kinda sad But oopsie (to the requests IM SO SORRY i will get to them)
“i had a feeling that you’d be too clingy to let me die alone,” carl’s laugh quickly turned into a wheeze as he felt his lungs tighten in his chest.
“please, you’re the one who’s always stealing my thunder,” y/n chuckled dryly, her hand reaching out to hold carl’s. they first met on a deserted highway moments before he lost his first friend in the apocalypse: sophia. god gave him a new friend that day just to snatch the other one away.
“yeah?” carl turned his head to look over at y/n. her face had lost its usual colour and vibrancy, the change was almost startling. carl wondered how he looked for a moment, did he look worse than her? was she okay?
“mhm,” y/n hummed turning to look back at him. they were both leaning their weight against the wall behind them, far too exhausted to sit up by themselves. carl and y/n had both been bit.
“i wish we had more time,” carl sighed, his gaze falling to his lap.
“everybody wishes they had more time, carl,” y/n laughed, leaning her head back, “don’t be so cliché.”
“cliché? you even know what that means?” carl’s breath was laboured, but he wanted to postpone his death for a few minutes. y/n and him never had much time to talk anymore, why not talk during their last moments.
“yeah,” y/n rolled her eyes, “the prison didn’t exactly have the best books, so i read a dictionary like five times.”
“you’re such a liar,” carl scoffed, shaking his head.
“you are being an imbecile,” y/n laughed softly, her hand twitching in carl’s, “that means stupid person.”
“if you had kids they would’ve been so damn annoying,” carl groaned as he readjusted himself against the wall, “so annoying.”
“your kids would’ve been losers,” y/n grinned, she could almost picture what his and enid’s kids would’ve looked like, “my kids would’ve kicked your kids asses.”
“i’d beat your kids asses then.”
“i’d beat your ass then.” y/n retorted.
the girl started to cough and when she pulled her hand away from her mouth, her hand was stained with red. the reality that one of them may turn before the other hit both of them in an instant.
“if i turn-“ y/n was interrupted by carl.
“stop it.” his voice was stern, but she could hear the pain in it.
“carl…” y/n sighed, leaning her head on his shoulder, “it’s gonna be one of us.”
“let’s just talk more?” carl’s voice was weak and fragile, he almost sounded the same way he did when y/n first met him. like a little boy.
“sure,” y/n breathed out, nodding despite the action causing her to feel nauseous, “what do you wanna talk about?”
“would you have had kids?” carl asked. there wasn’t much he wanted to talk about, but it felt like there was almost too much to talk about.
“nah,” y/n’s laugh was wheezy, it burned her chest to even laugh, “i’m more of a cool aunt, don’t you think?”
“yeah, you are,” carl chuckled, nodding his head slowly.
“did you want kids?” y/n asked.
“not now, but… i think i would’ve liked to.” carl hummed after he spoke, almost like he was contemplating it. what a sad thing for a dying boy to think about the life he could’ve had.
“your kids would’ve been cool, i lied earlier,” y/n shrugged, “a dad with a cool hat ‘n eyepatch? you’re kidding me, they’d be awesome.”
“what happens when i have two kids and only one hat?” carl joked, a sad smile on his face.
“pick your favourite, i don’t know,” y/n grinned, but as she sat in silence for a few seconds her smile faded. her body felt weak to the point it ached to even exist, but she didn’t want to leave carl so soon. she didn’t want him to be alone.
“i wrote you a letter,” carl confessed, his head lowered again, “i wrote everyone letters actually, i wrote one for you too though… but i didn’t expect you to be here with me.”
“what’d it say?” carl’s heart broke at the sound of her voice. she clearly had very limited time left and it brought a tear to his eye.
“i wrote,” he sighed, his hand reaching up his hip, hovering over his gun, “what i wrote was.. i’m grateful to have grown up with you.. and that i hoped you never felt lonely again, even after i’m gone… i love you, y/n.. you’re my best friend.. i asked you to tell judith about mom, tyreese, glenn, beth and hershel…”
“hope you told someone else to do that..” y/n rasped out, chuckling slightly.
“we’ll see each other again.” carl pulled his gun out and rested it on his lap, his fingers twitching against the cool metal.
“in another life?” y/n whispered, her eyes shutting as her chest rose and fell for the last time.
“in another life.”

If You'll Have Me by Eunnie Viking
Momo Gardner is the kind of friend who’s always ready to lend a helping hand. She’s introverted, sensitive, and maybe a little too trusting, but she likes to believe the best in people. PG, on the other hand, is a bit of a lone wolf, despite her reputation for being a flirt and a player. Underneath all that cool mystery, she’s actually quick to smile, and when she falls for someone, she falls hard. An unexpected meet-cute brings the two together, kicking off the beginning of an awkward yet endearing courtship—but with their drastically different personalities, Momo’s overprotective friend, and PG’s past coming back to haunt her, Momo and PG’s romance is put to the test.
A Bright Heart by Kate Chenli Union Square & Co.
What if you could avenge your own murder? A brilliant young woman gets a second chance at life in this debut YA tale of vengeance, court intrigue, and romance, inspired by classic Chinese tropes. Mingshin outsmarted three princes to help the man she loved become king. But she doesn’t see Ren’s betrayal coming, not until she’s lying in a pool of her own blood on the palace steps. As she’s dying, Mingshin makes a desperate plea to the gods to turn back time and give her a chance to make things right. Mingshin wakes up two years earlier, her prayer granted, and swears two things: Ren will never become king, and she will never fall in love again. But the timeline in this life has changed: a dignitary gifted with dark magic is threatening her kingdom’s peace, and Ren’s thirst for power runs deeper than Mingshin could have imagined. She finds herself allying with Jieh, another contender for the throne. Mingshin knows better than anyone not to give her heart to a prince. But in the viper’s nest of the royal court, she and Jieh prove a phenomenal team. Can Mingshin avert the catastrophe of her past by once again learning to trust…and maybe even love?
All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology edited by Circe Moskowitz Amberjack Publishing
Welcome to the Dark. We are all familiar with tropes of the horror genre: slasher and victims, demon and the possessed. Bloody screams, haunted visions, and the peddler of wares we aren’t sure we can trust. In this young adult horror anthology, fans of Jordan Peele, Lovecraft Country, and Horror Noire will get a little bit of everything they love—and a lot of what they fear—through a twisted blend of horror lenses, from the thoughtful to the terrifying. From haunted, hungry Victorian mansions, temporal monster–infested asylums, and ravaging zombie apocalypses, to southern gothic hoodoo practitioners and cursed patriarchs in search of Black Excellence, All These Sunken Souls features the chilling creations of acclaimed bestsellers and hot new talents, with stories from Kalynn Bayron, Donyae Coles, Ryan Douglass, Sami Ellis, Brent Lambert, Ashia Monet, Circe Moskowitz, Joel Rochester, Liselle Sambury, and Joelle Wellington.
The Blackwoods by Brandy Colbert Balzer + Bray
The Blackwoods. Everyone knows their name. Blossom Blackwood burst onto the silver screen in 1962, and in the decades that followed, she would become one of the most celebrated actors of our time—and the matriarch of the most famous Black family in Hollywood. To her great-granddaughters, Hollis and Ardith, she has always just been Bebe. And when she passes away, it changes everything. Hollis Blackwood was never interested in fame. Still, she’s surrounded by it, whether at home with her family or at the prestigious Dupree Academy among Los Angeles’ elite. When private photos of Hollis are leaked in the wake of Blossom’s death, she is thrust into the spotlight she’s long avoided—and finds that trust may be a luxury even she can’t afford. Ardith Blackwood has always lived in the public eye. A television star since childhood, she was perhaps closer with Blossom than anyone—especially after Ardith’s mother died in a drug overdose. Ever since, she has worked to be everything her family, her church, and the public want her to be. But as a family secret comes to light and the pressures from all sides begin to mount, she wonders what is left beneath the face she shows the world. Weaving together the narratives of Hollis, Ardith, and Blossom, award-winning author Brandy Colbert tells an unforgettable story set in an America where everything is personal, and nothing is private.

multi-chapter despair sisters // junko enoshima fanfiction concept
so basically i’m working on writing the most fucked up elaborately angsty sister fix it fic you can possibly imagine about my girls junko and mukuro. it’s a continuation of danganronpa IF but with a little flare of reality, so the concept is that after the failed mutual killing game, junko is tried and found guilty of attempted murder and a few other crimes, but the world still thinks izuru kamukura is responsible for the tragedy, the apocalypse, the terrorism, etc. to the world, junko enoshima is just another one of izuru’s remnants of despair, just another high school girl who was manipulated and swept away by the big bad man and the current of despair.
at the start of the story, junko has been in prison for like three or five or seven years (i haven’t decided yet lmao.) mukuro calls her every day even though junko never picks up, writes her letters even though junko never responds, comes to visit once a week even though junko always refuses to see her. she hates her. she hates mukuro—really, genuinely hates her. the whole betraying their cause to help makoto naegi thing left junko with a sour taste in her mouth—it was boring and predictable and staggeringly disappointing, even for mukuro—and so her previously fluid, fluctuating hatred hardened into something vicious and unmoving, something stagnant and boring. these days, as far as junko is concerned, she’s an only child.
life in prison is nothing short of dull and degrading, but her new medications, especially the xanax, and the two goons (or friends or whatever) she’s collected during her sentence thus far—her former classmate and current cellmate celestia ludenberg, who was arrested about a year after junko’s verdict for running an underground illegal poker ring and the former undercover officer who arrested celestia ludenberg for running said underground illegal poker ring, miu iruma—make it almost tolerable. the only intolerable thing junko has ever encountered in prison, the only intolerable thing junko has ever encountered period, is the Hole. but she behaves now, so the only time she spends locked in that 3.6ft x 4ft torture chamber enduring a merciless suffering so inconceivably awful even her despair deserted her in there these days is in the relentless waking nightmare she’s come to call her memory.
but aside from the transformation of her once glorious mind into the jumbled, abstract clusterfuck it is now (a parting gift from the Hole. ptsd—the gift that keeps on giving.) and the hallucination of her prettier, skinnier, saner high school self who she calls Ego and speaks to regularly, things are totally fine. boring, but fine.
then one morning a prison guard tells junko she has a visitor. junko, assuming it’s mukuro, waves the guard off, says, “tell her i was stabbed in a prison riot and my dying wish was for her to take a fucking shower.” but it turns out her visitor isn’t stinky, smelly mukuro after all—it’s the lieutenant of homicide at the tmpd, kyoko kirigiri !! kirigiri is waiting for her in the staff lounge of the prison and greets her with a photo of a young woman floating lifelessly in a bathtub surrounded by a halo of flowers. junko immediately recognizes the corpse as sonia nevermind, a remnant of despair, but what truly catches her eye are the monokuma hair ties holding her pale blonde pigtails in place. kirigiri tells junko she’d like her to take a look at the crime scene, and junko, who loves crime scenes and dead bodies and violence and the sorrow of lives taken too soon or whatever, is eager to see the rest of the sad photos, only for kirigiri to say, “i think it’d be best if you saw the scene in person.” and so kirigiri sneaks her out of prison for a field trip to a crime scene.
on the drive there, kirigiri explains that sonia nevermind is the newest victim of the most prolific serial killer in japanese history known as the ophelia killer. the name comes from the fact that all of his victims are found in water with ophelia’s famous bouquet, displayed to resemble the millais painting of ophelia. this fucker has been killing bitches for years (claiming the life of one victim per month) without ever leaving a trace: no dna, no witnesses, no security footage, no motive, literally nothing. the police know that the victims’ cause of death is always drowning, but these girls, these ophelias, are never found with any sort of defensive wounds. the tmpd has no idea how the ophelia killer even abducts his victims—one moment they’re there and the next they’ve vanished into thin air, only to reappear a month later floating languidly in a pool of pansies, poppies, violets, and roses, immortalized as yet another tragically beautiful ophelia. the victims are always young girls between the ages of 16-20 who come from respectable, wealthy families. it’s the same story every time: well behaved, bright futures, excellent grades, tons of friends, home by curfew, no history of running away, behavioral problems, or substance abuse. they’re always good girls from good families, so there’s an immense pressure on the tmpd from the public to catch this killer.
while junko is analyzing sonia’s crime scene, she immediately pieces together why she’s been brought here: the ophelia killer, whoever they are, is attempting to communicate with her through subtle clues scattered throughout a crime scene he designed just for her, like a little tap on her shoulder that says, “hey, wanna play?” (and indeed, junko wants to play.)
kirigiri’s theory is that there’s only one person in the entire world capable of committing such heinous, despairing, and yet utterly artistic murders for years without ever leaving a trace: izuru kamukura. the ophelia killer’s interest in junko is the only lead kirigiri has, so she makes a deal with junko that she’ll be released from prison under the condition that she agrees to work with the tmpd to catch the killer. junko agrees to the terms, more than thrilled to indulge in her sudden, utter fascination with her new friend and the cat and mouse killing game he so eagerly wants to play with her. also, it’ll feel nice to be free.
for the first time since her arrest, junko’s mind is alive, ablaze with possibilities, with predictions, with patterns, with questions: why, after all these years, has izuru kamukura decided to reach out? what does he want with her? is he seeking her friendship? her companionship? her mentorship?her despair? or is she just another one of his pretty ophelias, fragile and ethereal and doomed to sink beneath the surface and leave this world behind?
junko signs off on the offer, but she soon finds that kirigiri purposely neglected to mention a potentially deal breaking condition of her parole: her mandated place of residence.
upon her release, junko, who was under the impression that she’d be boozing it up in miu iruma’s bachelorette pad, finds mukuro waiting to pick her up from prison to drive her to an apartment she idiotically calls, “home.” the terms of her parole dictate that she’s required to live with mukuro, the sister she fucking loathes, the sister she once loved even more dearly than despair, the sister she refuses to let in no matter how frantic the pounds sound on the other side of the door. despair is a path best walked alone, and that’s that. and so junko is determined to navigate the painfully reality of her ptsd on her own, concealing the fact that she even has it in the first place from everyone she knows, but especially from mukuro. she buries the truth of what really happened to her in the Hole six feet under, the grave unmarked, never to be spoken of aloud. however, she slowly starts to realize that no matter how abysmal the pool, how deep the grave, how tiny the hole, some bones just refuse to rest peacefully.
mukuro and junko eventually begin to find their way back to each other through the cobwebs and clutter of their many crowded years apart, but as the gap between them continues to shrink, junko can’t help but feel illogically lost. when she looks at her reflection in the mirror, on the water, she wonders if she’s missing something, maybe even everything. if they’re truly making their way back to shore, why does she still feel like she’s underwater?
while mukuro fights to keep her afloat, junko chases after the ophelia killer and the promise of despair that awaits her, plunging full fathom five into the deepest, darkest depths she’s ever known, trying desperately to avoid the mirrors that seem to appear at every turn along with the holes they’re meant to conceal.
MAIN CHARACTERS: junko enoshima, mukuro ikusaba, miu iruma, kyoko kirigiri, celestia ludenberg, izuru kamukura, maybe kotoko utsugi
MINOR CHARACTERS: the 78th class, the 77th class, kaede akamatsu, suichi saihara, korekiyo shinguji, probably more from dv3 as needed
(junko’s relationship with despair is a super prevalent aspect of the plot too lol not sure why i didn’t mention that but yeah.)

What are your k drama recommendations??!? I need new ones
omg my time has come thank you anon for giving me the opportunity to ramble about shows
I ended up talking WAY too long so I'm putting everything after the first one under the cut
all of us are dead- show about high schoolers as a zombie apocalypse starts. very funny and relatable, literally they call the police and are like 'have you seen train to busan?' bffrrn. has a lot of social commentary and there are references to the sinking of mc sewol (a cruise that sunk where the captain deserted it and left a large amount of high schoolers to drown). commentary about how adults save themselves first/leave youth to fend for themselves. one of my comfort shows and although they didn't intend for more seasons, it was received so well that they have been renewed! I am also an ot4 truther and sometimes talk about them on my international shows sideblog: @nam-on-jo
sweet home- (disclaimer: I am not caught up and have not yet seen s2 which came out a little while ago) honestly I have no idea how to explain this so I'm gonna copy-paste the blurb: as humans turn into savage monsters, one troubled teenager and his neighbours fight to survive and to hold onto their humanity. basically people turn into monsters for [redacted] reasons and everyone in his large apartment building is stuck inside trying to fend for their lives.
my name- I'm just going to paste the blurbs going forward because it's easier: Following her father's murder, a revenge-driven woman puts her trust in a powerful crime boss -- and enters the force under his direction. bro some of these twists I expected but others caught me off guard. I love the main character and am a little gay for her but I think that's valid because she's a bamf. there was a plot point at the end of the second to last episode that I really didn't like and made me very upset. narratively I get why they did it but it made me sad so I'm still pissy. might get around to writing a fix-it fic one day when motivation strikes because my girl deserves better things.
the guest- a detective, a catholic priest, and a psychic join forces to fight crime caused by supernatural forces. not to say they are my ot3 but they kinda are. (other ppl interpret it is a lesbian and her two bi/gay bffs which I also accept but. ot3 tho). LOVED every twist and turn and how the three of them go from not trusting one another to being family. genuinely one of my favorites from all the kdramas I've watched over the years and I want to rewatch it again soon
happiness (tvn)- The residents of a high-rise apartment fight for their lives against a deadly infectious disease while Sae-bom and Yi-hyun try to find the person because of whom the virus spread. bro I adored this. some characters annoyed me (which means they were written effectively) but it has so much. fake dating/marriage (they wanted a better apartment lmao). annoyances to lovers. mean/rude woman soft for sunshine man. what you will do for the people you love. morals and humanity during a catastrophy. *smacks show* you can fit so much into this. no but seriously, I thought this was a really interesting take on the zombie virus! so some of the time you come off completely asymptomatic and 'normal', so people can get away with acting normal and hiding the disease around other people, so the paranoia and mystery is REALLY amped up. had me guessing a LOT. sae-bom and yi-hyun are both cops/detectives and you find out really early (ep 1/2?) that sae-bom is immune which gives a really interesting dynamic that leaves her (to yi-hyun's exasperation and heightened blood pressure levels) to be kinda reckless in the pursuit of truth and salvation. I'm rambling now because this is making me watch to rewatch but yeah as a zombie/dystopia/apocalypse lover this was a good watch. it's more story-focused than violence-heavy which was a cool and refreshing twist
alice in borderland- okay y'all I am aware people had mixed feelings about s2 but overall I did enjoy the series. 'Obsessed gamer Arisu suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive.' what can I say, I love a dystopian-esque setting.
the silent sea- imma be real, I only watched it for loml bae doona from sense8. 'During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets.' basically earth is in severe crisis mode as they run out of water to drink. water has recently been found on the moon, and although there was a mysterious tragedy that happened previously to researchers looking for water in a base on the moon, they have reached a level of desperation where they have another mission to look for moon water. mystery, paranoia, a couple of good twists ensue. I thought it was pretty good even though I have some mixed feelings about the open ending.
semantic error- yes I am sliding a bl into this list. bitch you thought. of course my bl-loving self would mention this (I forgot about it until I looked up good kdramas to remind myself of stuff I have watched). 'A strict, rule-abiding computer science major must work together with an artist with a polar-opposite personality to his.' confident cool boy meets bitch boy. it's great.
and of course...
leverage con artists- I would be fired from running this blog if I didn't mention the beloved korean spinoff of leverage. 'The series follows the story of Lee Tae-joon, a former insurance investigator who forms a team of thieves and con artists to target the rich and wealthy. The team was also formed to avenge Tae-joon's son's death.' I've posted about it before so I won't go super into it but it's VERY camp, a good time, and the ot3 is alive and well. debatable more overt than their predecessor!
other mentionables:
I tried watching kingdom (again for bae doona) but couldn't really get into it. might try again later because it's critically acclaimed (I think) and has even gotten a spinoff series
my roommate really liked mr queen. I didn't really pay attention when we were in the same room and they were watching it but it's fruity
the island on amazon prime was good! interesting plot but not in my top 10 or anything. worth a watch if you're looking for a kdrama to watch in your spare time. features girlboss businesswoman being thrown into a world of the supernatural because [redacted]. supernatural black horse man keeps her safe while keeping a life-changing secret.
let's fight ghost was a thai show that I saw and loved that was adapted into a kdrama called bring it on ghost, but honestly I couldn't get through it because I liked the thai one better.
train to busan is technically a movie but it's iconic and well-known and I highly suggest watching it if you like zombie/apocalypse movies. disclaimer: kdramas do not have the slow 'walker' zombies. they are fucking fast and the stuff of my nightmares. would probably just jump off a bridge if this actually happened ngl
I did think that extraordinary attorney woo was cute. I never finished it and know that there are VERY valid criticisms about the perpetuation of media portraying people with autism in the stereotypical savant ways. however, I liked how the love interest accepted her for who she was, loved her because of who she was and made efforts to accommodate and learn how to comfort her in ways that would work for her
business proposal was pretty decent if you like lighthearted romance- I didn't finish it but would like to at some point
tale of the nine tailed was another one that my roommate and I started watching but never finished. it was alright! just lost interest
shows on my watchlist:
black knight (netflix)- 'In a dystopian future devastated by air pollution, the survival of humanity depends on a group of deliverymen known as the Black Knights who navigate the wastelands using unconventional means.'
copycat killer-
hellbound (netflix)-
shop for killers (hulu)- 'A nephew who lost his parents and grew up in the hands of an uncle who runs a shopping mall faces a new truth after his uncle's sudden death.'
the legend of the blue sea (viki + hulu)- 'A magistrate's plan to release mermaids into the ocean backfires when they're caught by fishermen.' (legit I just miss mermaid media)
gyeongseong creature (netflix)- 'In the city of Gyeongseong in 1945, a group of young people thinking only of their own survival encounter a monster born of human greed and ask themselves what humanity is.'
dark hole (viki)- 'A mysterious black fog from a petrochemical factory's sinkhole turns people into bizarre figures; people who are not infected try to survive in this middle of pandemonium.'
the cursed (multiple)- 'An enthusiastic social issues reporter, fighting against the evil hidden behind an IT conglomerate, meets a teen-age girl who is possessed by a spirit and has special abilities.'
blood (multiple)- 'Dr Park Ji Sang believes in the sanctity of human life, and struggles to treat terminally ill cancer patients and save lives while at the same time being a vampire.'
the ghost detective (viki)- 'In this horror thriller drama, a detective who catches ghosts tries to solve the case of his younger sibling's death with the help of his assistant.'
possessed (netflix)- 'A smart-mouthed detective and a reclusive psychic medium join together to get rid of the ghost of a murder who was executed 20 years ago.'
connect (hulu)- 'A man is kidnapped and one of his eyes removed by a gang of organ hunters; his eyes was transplanted into body of a serial killer; the unwilling donor now has terrible visions as he witnesses terrifying attacks on the residents of Seoul.'
and now just because so many of these only have het romances, I looked up k-dramas with lgbtq representation... (some of these recommendations were from articles from screenrant, movieweb, this subreddit, herzindagi (bl-focused), allkpop)
schoolgirl detectives (viki)- 'Five teenage girls join together to investigate mysterious incidents that occur at their school, as well as help classmate deal with bullying, depression and other crises.'
be melodramatic (netflix, viki)- 'Three 30-year-old best friends, Jinju, Eun-jung and Hanju each pursue different paths in both career and love. Despite life's difficulties, the three friends can always return home at the end of the day and support each other.'
lily fever (available w/subtitles on youtube)- 'The story revolves around the budding relationship between Kim Kyung Ju and Jang Se Rang who meet when Kyung Ju can't find her passport and has to go to her friend's house to try and find it.'
love alarm (netflix)- 'In a world in which an app alerts people if someone in the vicinity likes them, Kim Jojo experiences young love while coping with personal adversities.'
nevertheless (netflix)- 'The story of a romance between a man who is annoyed with relationships but likes to flirt and a woman who wants to date but does not believe in love.' (wlw side couple romance)

So in your mind what’s w the garudo? To me they seem to think presentation = gender way more than the other peoples.
But in your version what’ll you be doing? Sorry if this one’s a bit blugh
no, i think you hit it square on the head. there is some semblance of a gender binary culturally recognised by the gerudo (they, after all, interact with men all the time) but as of BOTW/TOTK, the traditional gerudo culture dictates young gerudo girls of a certain age move to Gerudo City, which forbids men from entry. that's how it is on paper, anyway -- in actual fact, Link can walk right up to the guards in front of Gerudo City, be perceived as a "guy" and thus refused entry, then change into women's clothing IN FRONT OF THEM, and be allowed in, whereupon there is nothing Link can do to be kicked out from Gerudo City other than change out of the outfit.
In reality, the Doylist answer to this is it's a videogame abstraction -- and the whole thing is rather transphobic & racist too; a lot of the stuff going on with the Gerudo is between "kinda" and "very" racist just in general. i don't know how to (or if i adequately can?) address all of the problems there in my fic? . "desert race of giantess middle eastern warrior women" goes pretty deep to the core with this one, and that's before you get onto Ganondorf. and the whole stuff with the crossdressing... look man, if other people thought the Vilia storyline was meant to be progressive or sympathetic, i guess i'm glad they got that out of it, but it felt like a big transphobic joke to me. i'm changing pretty much all of this, and a bunch of other stuff. i still think it's not gonna be perfect (not really for me to say how unsalvageable some of the Gerudo stuff is in terms of racism, but i think i'm gonna reach out and talk to a couple of my friends about it and how they feel and what they might do etc) but i'll be changing stuff, and emphasising the good changes Nintendo has made over time whilst rejecting the worse ones
one thing i think i will do on the transphobia front is change it so that Gerudo City will allow trans women inside the walls if we are actively performing femininity to some degree. now, this is of course transphobic too, but i think it's kind of interesting to explore a more complex situation where trans women are a recognised type of person, and by the official legal policies of Gerudo City accepted in as women, but because of overtly binaristic, cisnormative overtones to the society, culture, politics & history there are probably still quite varying reactions, responses to transfemininity etc. because, well, that's my experience in a lot of gendered/women-only spaces! and i'd love to explore that through Link.
i also think that just before the Great Calamity, maybe there weren't as many openly trans people across Hyrule, perhaps due to social conceptions about gender at the time; i think maybe in the pockets of surviving towns and cities and villages 100 years later whilst Link has been asleep, trans people have become more recognised and embraced to some extent -- including in Gerudo City -- but, like in the real world, the change is slow, and some people struggle to see past their preconceived notions about gender. i just think it's more interesting to relate aspects of a #trans Hyrule to the trans experience now (i.e. in a time of great cultural shift for trans people both for good and for bad) but also exploring how and why it would be different in a fantasy post-apocalypse lol. i also don't want to overdo it into a depressive circlejerk of trans misery, either though, so don't worry, it won't be like that, i am making sure to steer very very clear of this.
i do also have maybe some potential reasons as to why there's been a cultural shift on transness in Hyrule (and particularly Gerudo City) in the 100 years after the Calamity though -- and i'd love to say more, but unfortunately, i've already said too much 🤐 gotta leave soooome stuff for the fic, and i have to check some stuff against lore before i commit to it.
great question!
