Hey, I've been recently made aware of a... I don't know what to say so I'll just put, "controversial" update of one of the games in this community.

First off, I want to say kudos to @/fantasia-kitt for biting the bullet and putting some actual real dark shit into the game. This is what's been missing from the community.

Personally, I think these devblogs and interactions between community and developer have watered down yandere stories and have promoted an almost unhealthy look towards what a yandere actually is.

It also has caused several people to develop an unhealthy sense of relationships, thinking that you're only loved or capable of showing love if you do extremely toxic things as a "Look what I'll do for you, don't you understand?"

This isn't to say that I think devblogs should be removed, or we should stop dev-community interactions all together. No, this is just me saying, "Hey, guys. These characters are meant to be dark, are meant to be evil, they're morally reprehensible and irredeemable. Remember that."

When you get into dark content, you have to be prepared for dark fucking content, okay?

Onto my second point of this post.

Do I think there should have been clearer warnings in the game before some of this stuff happened? Yes and no. I think FK's warnings are appropriate and clearly stated.

I also think that following a similar format to Boyfriend to Death, where there is a content warning/trigger list for each separate character would help in expectations for these incidents. People get attached to characters, it's a thing that happens. If you asked me several months ago, I would have a different opinion. As it stands, I now have comfort characters of my own.

Do I think anything is wrong with TKATB or FK? No, absolutely not. FK is entitled to create whatever story they want to, however dark they want to. I appreciate that they're bringing this into the community and it's a little inspiring and motivating if I'm being honest.

Anyway, this is just my own personal thoughts and ramblings on this matter. I am but a tiny dev with a tiny following that wanted to make a post about this in general. In the future, I will personally be making a trigger/content warning list for each character before such content is released to avoid this happening. I will also be implementing it into the game itself so it's very in your face about what Duplicity: Revival contains.

You have your own responsibility to listen to and heed warnings that developers list for their games. If ***any*** of that content on those warnings are an issue for you, then don't interact with the game. At all.

I think that's all I had to say about this. I'll add more if I think of anything.

listen i know it's a buzzword but when game companies say something like 17k ending iterations/variations they don't mean there are 17k narrative ending options. they mean that within the game parameters(including small details like what hair you have, what armor you're wearing, your party composition), there is a lot of different VARIABLES the game has to consider.

bg3 does have somewhere around 17k variations, they're just not what people outside the industry would first think of when hearing the term.

TL;DR:

Your hair, eye color, armor, dyes, party composition, etc., are all variables the game takes into account when we talk about Ending Variations

There were not 17k endings worth of content removed from the game(this is unrelated to the actual content that never made it into final build)

Buzzwords are as much a marketing technique as they are an online argument starter.

Absolutely continue to demand and comment and critique though! Feedback in all forms is important. But also be careful about the words that spark debate, a lot of the time they're not exactly as they seem o7

with this i also want to address some comments/asks i've been getting, please do not repeatedly ask for sexual content to be added in the game. "it's a yandere game so why it's not added" frankly is a bit of a ridiculous standard. i have been saying it was a very very tentative thing and that if it were to be added, it'll be an entirely different build, but now it is a definite no because i'm really never comfortable in creating explicitly sexual content anywhere at all, and i don't want to push any of my own boundaries! however you are free to make your own, i'm never against my characters being portrayed in a sexual manner, please just tag it appropriately and that you are an adult sharing it :3 thank you for reading, and supporting the game !

I saw your post regarding TKATB and it got me thinking…I’m not a fan of the yandere archetype (or just dark archetypes in general), but I decided to learn more about it after seeing a few YouTube videos. As someone from "the outside", I find the genre easier to understand as a horror category first and foremost. However, because yandere content seems to overlap with content by romance fans, for whom the interest is in the romantic aspect first, I understand why people are upset with the TKATB update. If someone judge these games by the standards of the romance category alone, they’re bound to be criticized, because horror and romance (as genres) don’t fulfill the same expectations. I guess my point is…there might be a need to find ways for people who want a romance game with dark themes VS people who want a horror game with dating as a mechanic to better identify which games are for them. Because while some games might be for both (maybe? Idk), I think the darker ones are for horror fans first. And maybe that also explain why some of these games feel "diluted" to others…because they were intended as romance first, horror second (or maybe even third). At least that’s my understanding, Idk, not my fandom.

First off: to understand the want for Yandere vns and stories and characters, you need to understand that there is a not-insignificant group of people that enjoy both HORROR and ROMANCE together.

When we engage in Yandere content, we go into it knowing that it's DARK. That it contains FUCKED UP content. Because that's what YANDERES ARE.

They are, by definition, obsessed with the idea of love. They force that obsession onto a person and build them up to their ideal image of a partner, even if said Darling/Person does not actually meet those standards. That's the whole point. The dark obsession, the twisted thoughts, the fucked up lengths these characters will go to MAKE YOU LOVE THEM.

And that's what we love and enjoy.

When it comes to the watered down part, it's because people have only been interacting with the cutesy-romantic part of yanderes. What they'll do for you in regards to say... doing your laundry, taking care of you if you're sick, all the regular romantic things we tend to like and seek in partners.

It comes from that, and because of it, people are forgetting that these aren't just possessive lovestruck characters. They're forgetting that they're literal murders, stalkers, manipulators, abusers, assaulters.

You're finding it easier to understand as a horror category because you DON'T understand yanderes. And that's okay. I knew making that post might bring more eyes on the situation than needed. That's okay too. I just spoke up and said things that needed to be said, frankly.

People who played TKATB knew going into it that it was a yandere game. They know what the yandere genre is. It's not something that just pops out to you, you have to physically look for this dark romantic horror genre.

They knew on FK's game page what the content warnings were.

They knew when they opened the game what the content warnings were.

They knew WHEN THEY ACTIVELY PLAYED

WHAT THE CONTENT WARNINGS WERE.

And they're still upset that their blorbo Sol isn't as rose-colored as they wanted him to be.

And that's okay, but it's also on them for forgetting what a yandere is.

For forgetting the horror and depravity that yanderes resort to.

It's not on FK.

It's not on me.

It's not on ANY yandere game creator/content creator/enthusiast.

It's on them.
