im back again oh boy, with the next of dhmis design but my version yep yep :D lamp this time,, also known as my all time favourite but sHH you hear nothing!!

not as much as a ref as the previous but i didn't have many ideas that could be visualised well, so they'll be written below :] + extra image??? basically a concept i coloured PTHTGHG

Welcome back to too many words yes hi, your fun fact here is that this is probably the only design that is basically a redesign of my first ever [created back in i dunno 2019??? eariler probably??] of when i did designs before that the world never saw. His previous creature-ness is kept the same, and the needless amount of hair increased! HAH!

But, as for what he specifically is, he's sort of a dream eater species of sorts. He requires no physical food to survive, fun!! now he can stay in bed foreverr :]] Essentially he enters dreams to be able to consume it, but he spends a fair bit of time just messing around in your head instead because he cannot dream like others can. When he does consume the dream, you are immediately woken up and feel like you have gotten zero sleep, which he does know, so he never sticks to just one person for it.

OH and as stated on the main image, he does feel like a plushie indeed!! Like quite a large, weighty plush but one none the less. His hair is soft but also wool-like in it's mass / density, though it's really hard to put anything through it. Also inexpicably smells of things you'd usually think of relating to sleep,, i guess?? like lavender or something. yeah. no reason for it he just do.

Out of all of the ones i will design, he is pretty much the only one with no intentions to harm anyone or be as controlling. He's just here to hang out and dream, and that is it. He's not easy to converse with as he speaks absolute nonsense that could only make sense in a dream, but that doesn't mean he's not trying to help cause affter all, dreams can also be in a metaphorical sense ;D

Generally though, he's nice enough. He does totally zone out a lot and just falls asleep mid conversation but at least he's not got any rules ,,?? Typically not seen outside of a bedroom though, if he isn't in there he's probably asleep on the floor somewhere,, because he will fall asleep anywhere and his hair is a functional enough blanket.

There’s something very ironic about the opening shot of (almost) every DHMIS TV Episode being the front door opening. Considering that in general, this show is about the claustrophobia and helplessness of these characters being trapped in their house unless let out by the capricious whims of their teacher - and specifically because of that, from our protagonists’ POV, that front door probably doesn’t exist.

Okay, so, judging from the layout of the house in both the opening and the show itself, the front door should be right here -

behind the kitchen, right next to the mirror and the coat rack (which, you know, it makes sense to have the front door right next to the coat rack). 

But the characters themselves never directly explicitly interact with this location (and they only implicitly interact with it once, which I will get to a bit later). Instead, every time the characters are actually shown going in and out of the house - they use the door on the side of the Dining Room.

And this door might lead outside of the house -

Or it might just lead to the living room.

DHMIS loves to use the conventions of television to create a surrealist and oppressive atmosphere and that is just another example of this. Nonsensical house/apartment layouts are not unheard of in TV Production. You know, filming inside a real house is often a lot less convenient than building disconnected sets and cutting between them when the characters walk through a door - and sometimes flubs or inconsistencies happen or the production just straight-up doesn’t care about it as much as nerds online and whoops now the characters live in a canonical non-Euclidean pocket dimension. But in DHMIS this is not a flub, but an intentional element of unease and horror (and sometimes comedy).

Cause, you know, it’s not just that the trio live in a space that does not make any sense (where is the bedroom anyways? Is it also behind that same dining room door?) - it’s also that their own house is a space they cannot actually fully control or navigate.

They can’t determine whenever this is the living room door or front door. They can’t leave of their own volition, but any random stranger can come inside or force them out.

Just another reminder that is not really their house, as much as they are of the house. And meanwhile the space that should logically be the front door goes totally ignored by the characters - basically on the same logic none of them can see either the staircase or the empty chalkboard space lingering just past the fourth wall of their dining room.

If it is off-screen, it basically doesn’t exist for the characters. Again, this idea of turning a convention of TV Fiction into another part of the Puppets’ Actual Nightmare is a recurring theme in DHMIS.

And on that same note, I want to point out the moment that comes closest to acknowledging the front door, or whatever else lies behind that little nook.

In Episode 2, ‘Death’, during the Memories musical montage, Yellow goes to the coat rack area -

And then he goes outside.

Basically the only time in DHMIS’ TV Series that one of the Puppets has left the house on their own. Not accompanied by a Teacher or following a ‘lesson plan’ (quite the opposite, really). Considering that he was by the coat rack a moment ago - that’s the closest we’ve got to one of the Main Three Guys Around using the front door where it’s supposed to be. 

It’s still all very… ambiguous. You know, and Duck was basically buried in their backyard, it’s not like Yellow was pulling a Transport and actually trying to leave. But I still think there’s something there. Cutting from the little coat-rack-hallway to the outside is suggestive of a certain kind of movement the same way heading towards the kitchen door and then cutting to the outside is. 

And the fact this is Yellow Guy, the Puppet who is at the same time most oblivious but also the closest to being aware of what’s going on -

hihihihi, I’m Gray, yes like the color/colour. I’m Agender(afab) and use any pronouns, I’m ace and on the arospec (I think I’m lithioromantic?) Ive had 3 crushes, 1 fem, 1 nb, 1 male. If you’re doing romantic, I do tend to have a preference towards masc people.

I’m honestly pretty average, I’m very middle energy between chill and energetic, it fluctuates depending on who I’m with. I’m an ISFJ 9w1 if that helps. I am the therapist friend and sometimes the mom friend. I am very much a listener, if someone starts ranting I’ll listen intently through it all even if it’s for 4 hours. I have gotten so many hyperfixations that way. I have generalized anxiety disorder (gad) and im currently being tested for adhd.

My hobbies include piano, I’m currently learning Duet from Omori, Art, I usually sketch characters don’t usually do big projects unless it’s for a class, baking, I tend to make brownies and cookies, though I can make other stuff like cake, and this isn’t really a hobby but sleeping, I love sleeping(which is weird because I either sleep really fast or I don’t sleep til 6am)

I like my friends, art, rain, comfy clothes like hoodies and sweaters, music, my favorite artists at the moment are Jack Stauber and Khai Dreams, dreaming, reading, puzzles, sudoku, plushies, sleeping, butterflies, Arctic foxes, kittens, fictional characters, and fandoms, some of those include dhmis, hh, interloper(arg), home safety hotline, etc. Some things I dislike are really tight clothing, being yelled at, harsh criticism with no compliment of what I did do good, being left out, feeling lonely, overthinking, my face, specifically my nose, mouth and forehead, pushing people away, ghosting people, and confrontation is a big one.

If you’re doing romantic, please don’t ship me with Angel Dust, I see him in a very brotherly sense. Similarly with husk.

I have listed characters before that I simp over and usually it’s either stoic and kind of cold or excitable and kinda babygirl vibes (I don’t know how else to describe it) and I already said above that I tend to have a preference towards masc

Something else that I could add is I do tend to have a trope I like? I don’t know if it means anything but I’m in love with rude or some other kind of negative adjective but has a soft spot for that one person and soulmate aus but that’s something else.

· Charlie loves that you like sketching, because she loves drawing too! You show each other what you make and she’s so happy to be sharing a hobby with you, where you can tell each other what you like about the other’s art and point out where to improve if needed. I feel like it’s more about the first thing though, as you both like doing it casually more than anything, so it’s a very positive experience!

· She also likes singing to the tunes of your piano; the others will stop by, mesmerized by your skill and her angelic voice.

· Charlie of course respects all of your dislikes; on your first day at the Hotel you inform her that you dislike tight clothing, and she makes you find a bunch of cosy and oversize clothes on your bed as a way to make you feel comfortable and welcomed.

· She also never makes you feel left out, and always includes you in every activity that she organizes whether it be with the other residents of the Hotel or as just a friend outing or hang out.

· She’s also not a big fan of confrontation, so she gets your dislike for it. If anything, you two can go through it together, and advise the other on how to handle it the best.

· She will also pull you out of your overthinking by coming up with some fun activity to do together; maybe you can give your favorite show a rewatch with her, or you can introduce her to all the plushies that you own- the possibilities are endless!

so I’ve finally gotten around to watching dhmis, the television series, which i was wary of because honestly i think this kind of story does better in a shorter format. but all that aside, i think i finally understand the “lore” behind the series. here’s my theory:

1. yellow guy was once a child prodigy of some kind. he invented a “third symbolic subset” outside of both numbers and letters, and worked with these seemingly magical symbols to study spatial distribution. spatial distribution of what? unimportant.

2. what is important is what yellow guy invented: a way to store space inside of space. a pocket dimension, essentially, and a way to control that pocket dimension with his symbols

3. yellow guy then dies in a tragic accident, leaving his parents, Lesley and Roy, in relative agony. Lesley uses yellow guy’s journal, and the magic symbols therein, to recreate a pocket-dimension of their old home. nothing inside of it feels quite real—thus its puppet-y nature. but here she can create replicas of everything she’s lost… her son, and his two friends (who may have been his friends since before the accident or may have just been two random people Lesley found)

3. Lesley, now insanely messed up after maintaining this pocket dimension for centuries (long past since the apocalypse occurred in the outside world) enjoys torturing the Three Of Them endlessly via the Teachers. Roy dies at some point along the way, but she simply replaces him too. Roy isn’t important. he’s just a messed-up maintenance guy for this universe

4. there’s just one problem. yellow guy is too intelligent. he figures out he’s in a pocket dimension every time. so Lesley intentionally handicaps him by providing him with “weak batteries.” when he miraculously gets his batteries replaced anyway, Lesley decides to play one last endless game, and gives him back his old journal so he can finally figure out how this world of his works

5. Lesley does this knowing full well that the instant red guy and duck see yellow guy again, they will tear out his batteries and replace them with his old ones. after centuries or perhaps millennia of torturing them, that’s how well she knows every possible choice they could make. and she knows that low-battery yellow guy, with the journal containing the only true key to his freedom in his hands, and with a shredder nearby, will choose to shred.

of course, there’s a second layer to all this, which is that the series as a whole has grown more complicated as time goes by. just as there is more attention to detail, and more puppetry, better sets, more voice actors, etc, with each new generation of the show the lore grows deeper, and escape becomes more and more impossible. even if the Three Of Them manage to escape their hellscape in one series, the next reboot will just put them right back where they belong. that’s the true, cosmic-level horror at the heart of the series… not Roy or Lesley, but The Show itself

if you’re wondering how all this relates to the original series, where red guy seems to escape temporarily to the real world and Roy seems to be controlling everything via the Control Panel… there’s a simple explanation:

1. Red Guy either did escape to the real world, in which case the presence of many other “red guys” there implies that he has escaped many times and simply been replaced, or he never escaped at all and merely believed himself to be in the real world

2. If we accept that red guy did escape into the real world in the original series, then that places the original series before the apocalypse, possibly hundreds of years before the tv series. this in turn explains the control panel being replaced by Lesley’s dollhouse and piano… it simply evolved over time. any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, after all

3. when red guy unplugged the control panel, he only achieved a pyrrhic victory—he destroyed his entire universe, and Lesley had to reset everything. why she chose to replace everyone’s original colors, i don’t know

lastly, if you’re wondering how Lesley managed to keep herself alive so long if this series has continued across hundreds of years… look at those stitches on her face. notice how we only ever see her gloved hands. Lesley taxidermied herself somewhere along the way. she’s a puppet, too

i cant believe it.. another person who randomly fuses dhmis characters with their other fandoms.. anyway i am so listening i am so listening ears are OPEN

some other easy ones are probs like.. sweetheart and shrignold from episode three (both love based) and the unbread twins and any of the guys from the food episode could work aswell.

bossman hero or jawsum could maybe fuse with tony the clock or maybe the briefcase from episode 1 of the actual tv series?? shrugs, i’m brainstorming here

:D I have to rewatch the episodes and the tv show lol I have some really silly ideas for this! I think fusing some of the headspace bosses with already existing DHMIS teachers could be really fun! It could also be fun to maybe come up with ideas for their own lessons/designs a bit different from the normal DHMIS ones too!

(Spoilers for DHMIS below/the teachers and students/songs below and also I like ramble quite a bit sorry! )

I can totally see all those ideas happening! I think the food episode one would be really funny with the unbread twins just always going back to bread or Bossman hero bringing out unemployed hs Kel in the jobs episode

I can also maybe see the unbread twins fitting the episode about family in some ways (although that one episode was creepy lol) I also have thought about maybe Yellow guy (Doi or Manny or David (I'm not sure I remember which name the fandom likes more) ) being inspiration for Angel in some way? Like maybe the "Smart" version of him could look a bit more similar to Neb while the "Dumb" version is more like Angel - Like maybe something happened to him and he's not fully himself/is split like the yellow guy

I also had ideas about if this was a au in general what the story/plot would be.. I thought of maybe they could be trapped in the house and each floor can have a new set of three students ( for random example: like floor one can have kel, aubrey, and sunny and the next has the maverick, vance, and angel or something) and each episode is them learning a new thing from a teacher/hs character

Maybe the plot can be something like hs leaking into other people's dreams or all the characters being trapped by sunny or something and until their own problems and sunny's can be resolved they can't leave the nightmare they are all trapped in. I'm not really sure Overall I have a lot of just scrambled/random ideas about it! :D If anyone has any headcanons/thoughts let me know! I have doodled concept designs for maybe one or two people but besides that I haven't really explored the idea too much sorry! ^^ Hope this wasn't too disorganized

⚠️DHMIS (2022) EPISODE 6 SPOILERS⚠️

Okay so... There's a lot to unpack here, right? Like we just got about 2 hours of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared content dumped on us all at once, as opposed to the previous years of drip feeding. It's a lot of data to sort through if you want to do any kind of in depth analysis.

So I'm honing in on episode 6, since that's the one that actually jumped out at me. I've seen a few theories tossed around, but so far no one seems to be quite on my wavelength so I figured it's worth sharing.

First, a quick run down of the important plot points to Episode 6: Electricity. The theme of the title is pretty quickly relegated to a B plot, with the Teacher having her batteries swapped with Yellow Guy's (yeah he's battery powered apparently). This makes her uselessly dumb and everything pretty much immediately devolves into chaos. Yellow Guy, however, suddenly... Okay have you ever seen the movie Limitless? He does a limitless. He gets really smart.

So smart that he starts to understand that the Teachers are... Mostly actually wrong about everything. This is probably intended as very straightforward commentary on educational programming and its tendency to dumb down topics for the sake of accessibility, even to the detriment of actual learning. That's kind of this series' bread and butter.

Where it gets interesting is when Yellow Guy decides to climb the stairs. It turns out that up the stairs is... Red Guy and the Duck? But not quite. They're bigger and... Smarter? But in practical terms this basically means they massive smug ass clowns who can do "two lessons at once."

Yeah it's weird. Then, Yellow Guy (absolutely fed up of this smug pseudo intellectualism) sees through the artifice. He catches a glimpse of...

The puppeteers.

This drives him off and he climbs the next set of stairs to find...

Freaky space age versions of Red and Duck. These ones are actually so intelligent that they don't have to interact with the Teachers. Instead, they experiment on a poor helpless creature for entertainment. It could be said that this suggests they've BECOME Teachers themselves, inflicting cruelty on the next generation, perpetuating the cycle. It could also be said that this is a commentary on the idea that being intelligence makes you cruel, and a refutation of it since Yellow Guy is still smarter than them, understanding that their "experiments" achieve nothing but wanton cruelty.

So, Yellow leaves, and ascends one final staircase. Where he meets...

Lesley. Lesley is significant for a few reasons. For one, at the start of the episode we see her crank the wheel that starts the house spinning in the intro of EVERY episode. She also appears briefly at the end of episode 5, returning the car and the characters to the house and resetting things to normal.

Lesley is basically God in the DHMIS universe. Seemingly. Notably, she's the only truly HUMAN character we've seen to my knowledge, but her face still has sewn on patches. There's something about her that's still not quite real. She narrates as Yellow enters the room, a few lines which are VERY important to this analysis.

"Batteries can be replaced

But some things stay the same.

No matter how we twist and turn

We're still dancing in chains."

She then hands Yellow Guy a book. A book etched with symbols that actually appear a few times throughout the series as minor background details.

More interesting, to me, though... Is the embossed imagery around the border. They're 100% about the story of DHMIS. We never get a good look inside the book, but I think it's safe to say it would probably be about the characters. Maybe scripts, or a production bible.

The last thing we see in this room is a door, ajar, and behind it... Another stairs. We never see what would have been on the next floor up. Maybe Becky and Joe, maybe some Channel 4 exec, maybe a stage where Yellow Guy could finally see the audience. Maybe it's a dead end.

Finally, Yellow Guy descends. Without the batteries that have empowered Yellow Guy, the house has been enveloped in shadow. Red Guy and the Duck sit by the fridge in the dark.

Yellow Guy returns with knowledge, a sort of divine revelation. Red Guy and the Duck don't care. They take the batteries, bring their false world back to life, return to the status quo. Yellow returns to his old self as well. The trio shred the book. They reject the truth. Their world may be strange, unpleasant, miserable... But to them that's just their world. Why peer behind the curtain? Why chance it? Better the devil you know.

Okay that's it, I just spent... Way too many paragraphs and an hour of my life summarizing this episode of a silly spooky puppet show. Why? Well, for that I'm gonna have to drag you into the philosophy dungeon for a minute.

For some of you, a lot of pieces just clicked together. Others... I'm sorry just watch this video.

I think this really encapsulates the ideas behind episode 6. Yellow Guy sees the light, sees the world beyond the cave, but his fellow prisoners are content with their shadows. "No matter how we twist and turn, we're still dancing in chains."

Look at these side by side and TELL ME that's an accident. Duck literally says "We'd better get used to the dark."

This is a very well known thought experiment in philosophy, the idea of Becky and Joe adapting it for their story which explores similar themes of knowledge and understanding is FAR from implausible. Hopefully you guys agree that there's something to this analysis. Sorry not sorry if you wanted lore and got a philosophy lesson.
