Gaming Spotlight #11: Digimon Rumble Arena (2001)
Tumblr media
Hello this is Larsa here with another spotlight feature on a game you may have missed from the Playstation era. Stand up to the fight!
Before we get to our featured title let's review some history shall we? Super Smash Bros 64 came out in the year 1999 developed by HAL Laboratory, INC. This revolutionary game was inspired by the dream match concept of SNK Corporation's own popular "King of Fighters" series where a bunch of a existing characters are thrown together to duke it out. Many in the industry took notice as the success of the new Nintendo crossover fighting game which created many fans of a whole new genre, platform fighting games.
Tumblr media
"Digimon Rumble Arena" or "Digimon Tamers: Battle Evolution" as it is known as in Japan would become one of the first early platform fighting games following in the giant shadow of "Super Smash Bros 64" to stand out as a game worth playing. Right away a fighting game based on one of the most popular anime series of the late 90s and early 00s just seems like a perfect pairing. By the time this game was released Digimon had firmly became a massively popular series already having a theatrical movie release worldwide and currently airing its very popular third season titled "Digimon Tamers". Right away the opening would blow the minds of any young Digimon fans at the time because it was essentially a Digimon dream match title starring the Digimon and tamers of the first three seasons slugging it out for digital supremacy.
Tumblr media
Is Guilmon really stronger than Agumon? How about Gatomon versus Renamon? Or how about a mega level battle of Beelzemon versus Omnimon? These were and still are important questions worth asking for any Digimon fan. And these sorts of playground questions are why this game was created.
Tumblr media
The gameplay features two opposing Digimon battling it out on one of the several different stages in a 2D plane. These stages are typically filled with unique stage hazards and ring out zones with randomly spawning items in the form cards which have a myriad of effects on the battle. These cards mirror the "Digi-Modify" or "Card Slash!" mechanics from the Digimon Tamers series . The roster is filled with Digimon supported by their appropriate tamers from the show with the same familiar voices for each character featuring over 20 playable Digimon. Unlike "Super Smash Bros" this game features a more traditional health bar system and draining your opponent's life bar to zero means victory. Each Digimon has two special moves and a myriad of normal attack strings you would expect in a fighting game. Right away in a way one would expect from this beloved franchise, Rookie level Digimon are capable of transforming into a stronger even more capable form in the middle of battle through Digivolution. Digivolving improves your stats and gives you a completely new different move-set than before meaning you as a player are often switching dynamically between different gameplay experiences. There are few things that feel better than securing a comeback victory with your favorite mascot Digimon because of a well timed Digivolution. Oh and wiping the floor with your opponent using Wargreymon's mighty signature technique, Terra Force.
Tumblr media
The main modes of the game are arcade mode and versus modes. In the Arcade Mode you take your selected Digimon through an arcade style ladder of bouts plus a few mini-games along the way with the goal of unlocking more characters. That is until you reach the new big bad of the game at the top of the ladder. Reapermon (Also known originally as Gokumon or ゴクモン) is a very difficult opponent to overcome and even now he still manages to give me trouble. I and along with anybody else who has ever played this game know of the horrors of his most powerful technique "Burning Cyclone". He is a cheap old school style boss who will test your skill at the game as one would expect from an older fighting game eating your quarters though in this case you thankfully probably own the game and you have as long as necessary to defeat him. Thankfully if you are struggling you can use some in-game cheat codes to fast unlock some Mega level Digimon along with other goodies to help even the odds. As far as versus modes go you can battle a friend locally or even play the mini-games against them. I spent many sessions having tons of fun fighting friends in this game. For an early platform fighting game the controls and mechanics are quite responsive which makes for amusing competitive bouts.
Tumblr media
The graphics and soundtrack of the game of the game are very impressive for the platform. The Japanese version of the game features many arrangements of songs from the anime series. However the game does have one big problem: the framerate slowdown is a persistent problem throughout the experience with this game. Unfortunately they are the game's immediate faults but the game has so much excellent fanservice content and a surprisingly responsive solid fighting game underneath that it is easy to forgive the shortcoming. This game is still pretty awesome and loaded with nostalgia for me having grown up with Digimon. This title gets my recommendation for any fans of Digimon to experience especially the Japanese version of the soundtrack if you are ever in need of a quick nostalgia-fueled adrenaline rush.
A gem hidden among the stones, Digimon Rumble Arena is unquestionably stardust.

Digimon: Rumble Arena - Final Thoughts
[Guilmon voice] Digimon RUMBLE ARENA! This was really fun and nostalgic. Probably the most scuffed game I've played so far, but in a charming way. It's a Playstation 1 Super Smash Bros. knock-off. I've never really understood how Smash Bros. works, so I'm glad I played this and learned a bit about the mechanics. I didn't unlock all the characters because I don't really have a reason to (ain't got nobody to play with), but I did beat the game 5 times, so not too shabby.
Notes:
Omg this game is hilarious from an audio/graphics standpoint. There's an awkward mesh of 2D and 3D, the tamers' dialogue is as crunchy as possible, and the digimons' models have that PSX charm
Tumblr media
(She looks so blobby hahahahaha 😂)
I'm more of a sub than dub person with digimon, so it was very fun/funny hearing all of the digimon and tamer voice lines. Everyone sounds so silly. They shout their attack names and then say a little victory phrase every time they win.
It felt like the smaller the digimon was the easier they were to play with. It also helped to have really good projectile and aerial attacks. Terriermon was the first mon I played as and probably my fave. I liked listening to their attack lines too.
The big bad this time is Reapermon which feels pretty random since most other games cycle through the same bosses. Apparently he's voiced by Steve Blum, so that's fun. His design gives me Egyptian vibes.
Culumon saying "Which digimon are you gonna play with huh? Which one?" Every time you open up the character select screen was both grating and cute.
The game has 3 mini games that I made sure to unlock, but they're kinda...bad. Two of them are basically the same idea (launching a ball at a target) and then the 3rd is just button mashing. This is no Super Monkey Ball. I think my fave mini game was the target one with the diamonds and stars you had to hit.
I did play this game on easy mode because I'm not a fighting game person. Even on easy mode it was challenging at times! It seemed to really depend on the digimon I chose, some of them were just OP. I think I struggled the most with Gatomon who just felt clumsy to me (plus Magnadramon kinda sucked).
I think the controls for this game were pretty satisfying. I especially liked how you used the same button for digivolving and using and ultimate attack, that felt pretty badass.
I enjoyed the variety in stages and the unique challenges they presented. It was especially fun launching your opponent into lava in the fire stage lol. It might be cool to get more canon-relevant environments in future games.
Overall, I'm glad I gave this one a chance and tried different digimon out. This seems like it would have been a good sleepover game in the 2000s. Would have loved to have played it when I was young and had tons of free time -sigh-
I give Digimon Rumble Arena a 6 out of 10

I beat Digimon Rumble Arena! Again! Second time for this blog specifically, weirdly enough.
I forgot how slow that game is 😭 at least the sequel sped things up a bit, even if they didn't have all the right VAs.
For some reason, the three minigames were a pain to unlock this time. The Digivolve Race literally didn't even show up until the VERY last time I went through the game, with Impmon. I was ready to just not bother with it.
Aaaaand I beat Deltarune Chapter 1 this morning as well! What a good game. Remember how it came out? That was batshit and it was incredible.
Seven games to go, two days to go. Yikes.

so I've been playing this Digimon Rumble Arena fangame this past week and it's really really good!! there's a ridiculous amount of love gone into this and it shows in the sheer quantity of content, from creative new stages (my favourites are the Trailmon station and the one based off of the DMW3 boss battle arena!) and arcade mode paths to all the unlockable characters and alternate evolutions....... thank god for Cyber Sleuth and ReArise because it means we have the models to make stuff like this for my niche faves like Valdurmon or RhinoBeetlemon lol
also most of the Frontier cast are playable and function like Pokemon Trainer in Smash, so you can swap between Human and Beast spirits on the fly and auhghghsgbskja it's fantastic,,, ,
I'm horrible at fighting games and the higher difficulties are a genuine challenge for me, but I've been slowly trying my luck at unlocking things from above normal mode even if it takes me a few retries just to get past one battle haha :'D
aaaaa I just really wanted to gush about this lmao, not many of my friends or family would care but it's so well-made ////

If Digimon Frontier had been airing at the time of the release of the first Digimon Rumble Arena, how do you think Digivolution would have been handled for the kids in Frontier?
Unfortunately, I never got to play Rumble Arena. So I don't know its mechanics. And I am not sure if I understand what exactly you mean by "handling Digivolution". However, I believe that it is questionable wether the Frontier kids could have been integrated in the first place. Main issue is, that four of the six only have gotten only two evolutions, whereas Takuya and Koji got both a Double Spirit and Hyper Spirit digivolution. Well, there are Double Spirit evolutions for the others, they could have taken those. Even though the only good design that is also consistent with its H and B Spirits is Raihimon. Problem is the Hyper Spirit digivolution, if we treat the H Spirit like a Rookie level, B Spirit as Champion and so forth. They'd have needed to create specific Hyper Spirit Digimon for the other four. Or they'd have had to create four pendants to Flamemon and Strabimon, which could have served as the Rookie level equivalents. So, to sum it up, I think it comes down to how much work they'd want to put in. I hope this answers your question. If not, I can watch some Rumble Arena and give a more accurate response. See ya, and thank you so much for your ask. 😉

Todo’s Boogie Woogie cursed technique is literally the same as the power I would always effectively spam as Renamon in Digimon Rumble Arena. Considering Gojo liked Digimon in high school, I feel like Boogie Woogie resembling that ability of Renamon was intentional. I can’t stop thinking about this. LOL

Completion No. 61 of 2022
Digimon Rumble Arena - Hudson Soft
A very INTERESTING smash clone with Digimon. Not a lot to it, pretty simple controls and the entire battle slows down when digivolution happens. Short campaigns so it doesn't overstay its welcome

August 08: TK Takaishi  and Patamon
One of the coolest Digi-destined in Digimon Adventures. Besides Izzy, TK is my second favorite character and Patamon. I used Patamon a lot when I was playing Digimon Rumble Arena. MagnaAngemon was super intense!

What would happen is the adventure and 02 kids met survive Myotismon and vice versa
I feel like on the Adventure kids' end it would just be like...really funny. Cuz they'd all be freaked out like DIDN'T WE KILL YOU THREE TIMES ALREADY HOW ARE YOU HERE meanwhile Survive Myotismon is just,,,he is just standing there. Once they clear up the misunderstanding it would be cute for them to all just hang out though. HE TALKS ABOUT HIS PARTNER LIKE A MOM SHOWING OFF HER KIDS AND THE ADVENTURE KIDS ARE JUST VERY PERPLEXED BY THIS SWEET SWILLY GUY WHO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE CREEP THAT TRIED TO ERADICATE THEM.
Tbh it'd be an interesting lesson in not judging a mon by its cover XD
Meanwhile Survive kids meeting the Adventure Myotismon would be...well potentially also funny. Dracmon being like "Watch out, Kaito. Myotismon is an evil and dangerous monster," and Kaito being like "I DON'T WANNA HEAR THAT FROM YOU"
Miu would absolutely be like "of course YOUR partner would share a form with a villain" (mostly jokingly) @ Kaito
Would Adventure Myotismon stay in like the normal form or would the Survive kids have to throw down with MaloMyotismon. Bc if it's the latter I think it would be comically similar to certain moral route shenanigans and they'd totally breeze through it lol
Vampire on Vampire violence
...hey Vampire Violence would be a cool band name. The merch would be like VV but with a curvy line connected them so it looks like a smile with fangs.
That had nothing to do with what you asked I just had an epiphany and felt the need to share it.
