Through the Digital Lens: How Communication Technologies are Reshaping the World of Work
As we navigate the evolving digital workspace, let's embrace technology while valuing human connection. Remember, we're not just part of this story, we're its architects. Together, we'll shape our shared digital future.
Once upon a time, in a world not too far away, nestled in the crux of the 20th century, there was an office. It was an office like any other – buzzing typewriters, clattering fax machines, and the perpetual hum of the telephone. Work was a set-piece in a monotonous diorama, the landscape of which was limited by cubicles and nine-to-five schedules. Fast forward to the 21st century, and a subtle,…

Exploring the benefits of digital transformation tools
Tumblr media
It is 2023, so it's safe to assume that you've decided to take your business online. But simply transferring your business from a filing cabinet to an intranet isn't enough to survive today's cutthroat competition. Customer expectations have become more diverse than ever before. Moreover, work roles have dynamically changed with hybrid and remote employment. Therefore, maintaining efficiency in your business while keeping up with all these changes has become an arduous task. This is why more and more organizations are utilizing digital transformation tools to advance their businesses.
A digital transformation tool helps organizations to:
1 - Ascertain and meet customer expectations -
Customer behavior changes rapidly, and with customers being the king, it is critically important for every business to meet their expectations. Digital transformation tools help businesses to provide a seamless experience and better serve their customers. For example, AI chatbots are increasingly becoming part of websites for quick customer query resolution. Integrating the right digital tool with your platform that can assess the most frequently asked questions will help you identify what your customers demand the most.
2 - Increase operational efficiency -
Digital tools help businesses to automate manual processes, improving efficiency, accuracy, and saving time and labor costs. They also reduce paperwork and improve compliance with regulations. The importance of collaboration in the workplace cannot be overstated, thus these tools extend optimal collaboration in terms of information, documents, and communication across the diverse hierarchy and departments of an organization. In addition, they streamline workflows, which has become essential to the changing work dynamics with hybrid and remote work roles. For example, there are several digital transformation tools like cloud-based computing solutions that enable businesses to store and access large volumes of data and make it scalable and accessible across the organization.
3 - Enhance decision-making
Digital tools help businesses make more informed decisions about their business. With these tools, you can analyze and assess several fundamental aspects of your business using real-time analytics. For example, using business intelligence tools and analytics software, one can easily process large volumes of data. They can also provide insights into user behavior and operational performance.
4 - Improves document management
Digital transformation tools offer businesses a robust framework for collecting, storing, and collaborating documents. From the onboarding documents to company policies and more, the documents are accessible across the organization as per the access granted to them, based on their work role. This also adds a lot of value to employee experience as employees can access the needful information and documents without the hassle of approaching personnel personally, especially when working remotely.
5 - Enhanced agility
Digital transformation tools give foresight to market conditions so that you can make strategies to leverage them to the best for your businesses. These tools aid business analysis as well as crisis management.  For instance, predictive analytics is a tool that is very helpful for businesses, especially financial services as they are enabled by the tool to make decisions regarding investments, risks and for targeting customers.
There is a plethora of advantages that these tools can offer your business, and these top 10 digitalization tools can take your digital transformation to the next level. So, what are you waiting for? Revolutionize your business with the accelerated momentum offered by digital transformation tools.

Medieval Times invents a modern union-busting tactic
Tumblr media
In the summer of 2020, I committed a minor heresy: I published a column that argued that — contrary to the orthodoxy of free culture and free software advocates — the term “IP” has a very crisp meaning: “IP” is any law or rule that can be used to control one’s critics, competitors or customers:
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
In free culture/free software circles, the term “IP” is viewed as a smokescreen, one that indiscriminately blended a basket of unrelated regulations and laws (copyright, trademark, patent, trade secrets, anticircumvention, noncompetes, nondisclosure, etc) and then declared them to be “property” and thus sacred to the neoliberal religious doctrine.
In my column, I argued that the policies grouped under “IP” were not an incoherent mess — rather, they all shared this one trait that made them useful to those who had, advocated for, or tried to expand “IP”: they were tools that would allow you to reach beyond your own business’s walls and exert control over the conduct of others — specifically, competitors, critics and customers.
Take trademark: Apple engraves miniature logos onto the parts inside your iPhone, which you will likely never see. But these logos allow Apple to argue that when someone breaks up a dead iPhone for parts sells them to independent repair shops that compete with Apple’s repair monopoly, they are violating Apple’s trademarks:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/evk4wk/dhs-seizes-iphone-screens-jessa-jones
Or take DRM: DRM is useless for preventing copyright infringement (if you want to break the DRM on, say, an audiobook, you need only do a quick search). But because breaking DRM is illegal, Amazon’s Audible — the monopolist that controls the audiobook market — can prevent a rival like libro.fm from offering you a way to switch from Audible to its platform and move your audiobooks with them:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/25/can-you-hear-me-now/#acx-ripoff
Anyone performing a security audit of a modern digital product most likely violates some IP — either terms of service, or DRM, or both, or some other right. When these security researchers criticize manufacturers for their insecure products, the manufacturer can silence them with IP threats:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/10/canada-chile-security-researchers-have-rights-our-new-report
IP rights also prevent you from using the things you own in the way you want — they can control customers For example, IP rights allow your printer to refuse to print with ink of your choosing — it’s not that your printer can’t use that ink, rather, it won’t:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/ink-stained-wretches-battle-soul-digital-freedom-taking-place-inside-your-printer
Ever since I published that piece, I’ve noticed lots of examples of IP that fit within this box, and today, I found a particularly egregious one. Medieval Times has sued its workers’ union, Medieval Times Performers United, under trademark law:
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/medieval-times-sues-union-trademark_n_63485fa5e4b0b7f89f54546b
Medieval Times argues that its workers can’t call themselves “Medieval Times Performers United” because this will fool people into thinking that the company endorses the union, and that is a source of “consumer confusion,” and thus a trademark violation.
This is, of course, bullshit. Trademark contains a broad “nominative use” exception: trademark doesn’t let Coca-Cola stop Pepsi from claiming, “Our drink tastes better than Coke.” It doesn’t let HP prevent companies from advertising “HP-compatible ink cartridges.” It doesn’t let Apple prevent shops from saying “We fix iPhones.”
The union is contemplating mounting a defense at the National Labor Relations Board — not in a courtroom — “arguing that the lawsuit itself violates workers’ rights.”
It’s part of a broad union-busting campaign from Medieval Times, including anti-union “consultants” who bill $3,200/day. The performers are unionizing over pay, respect and workplace safety issues caused by inadequate staffing, especially staff who police the audience to prevent them from spooking the horses during jousting tournaments. Some performers have been attacked by drunken audience members.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/medieval-times-workers-first-union_n_62bb1d29e4b0d26a9b14fa17
[Striking workers in front of a factory, being fired on by teargas. Between them and the factory are a pair of jousting knights in the style of a medieval tapestry. Behind the factory looms a giant, ogrish boss in a top-hat, chomping a cigar. He is pulling on a lever made from a stylized dollar sign. In one gloved hand, he holds aloft a medieval night, who is bent over in supplication.]

Pharma Masterlist
_________________
They move around the medical bay, their optics linger on Pharma as they watch him work, the younger Decepticon medic hadn't anticipated what Pharma was like, he was an Autobot after all but he was nothing like an autobot. He scared them to a point with unethical means but if it meant they weren't in his firing line they couldn't careless. He was easy enough to work with, even polite at times when they were both working on patient's. He was a decent boss, that was their main reason for sticking around so long they kept telling themself.
Pharma pauses in his work, delicately probing mechanisms within another patient's frame, to glance over at the young Decepticon observing him. His visor gleams with cool calculation as his sensors assess the them, noting every flaw and weakness surely embedded within that still-impressionable processor.
"See something of interest, Decepticon?" he inquires smoothly, every syllable oiled with practised charm. A lesser medic may have snapped at them but he was all too aware of their lingering optics, concerned for battlefield adversaries within their precious medbay was not something he worried about, he knew how to play his assistant well.
After all, gratitude can work wonders in ensuring willing participation in...certain experiments. And raw fear of him proves such a potent motivator, as well as arousal, as this one's rapid ventilations already begin to show.
His talonlike tools delve within the circuitry once more as he awaits the mech's response, optics glinting cold assessment behind the cordial visor. Few escape unscathed once they catch his notice, his assistant on the other hand was rather illusive and vexing.
Their optics dart away as they move to the otherside of the medical room, they shift through different items taking notes of stock they would have to let Nickel know they needed, they try to ignore Pharma yet the lingering heat under their plating is beginning to get out of hand.  It makes their plating shutter slightly at the thought of having Pharma bending them over a surface.
They push the thought away before addressing the equipment they would be needing replacements for "Pharma we are going to need more Energon  infusers, welding rods and disk cutters" they call out while taking notes.
"Hmm, we are running through them quicker than I anticipated," replies Pharma smoothly. His helmeted head turns to track the scuttling Decepticon, digits never pausing in their work. "So dutiful of you to keep us well-supplied. I do insist upon only the finest tools for my...experiments."
Those cold optics watch keenly as the young mech shivers under the weight of his intense scrutiny. Fear truly is such a heady elixir for arousal, and one Pharma relishes cultivating with an artist's care.
"Do inform Nickel the list will need amending shortly," he murmurs softly. "Less we have more mishaps, for example..." A swift flick of his wrist, and the patient jerks upon the table, energon jetting from new seams as Pharma smiles behind his visor. He's quick at removing the T-cog. And spark before leaving the body to shut down. His burning gaze settles once more upon his skittish pet project who was twitching from need. "For now. But rest assured, Con,I believe you're in need of a check up" His tone whispers of rapture yet to be unveiled.
Their optics glance at him. "I have a name Doctor" they sneer lightly, they didn't appreciate Pharma's tone. They nearly gasp as one of Pharma's servos wrap around their waist. Whether  he was trying to unsettle them or arousal them, it had left their processor spinning.
"Indeed you do," murmurs Pharma silkily, taloned digits caressing the curve of the smaller Bot's waist. His field washes over them, cold yet stirring, the electromagnetic buzz of a predator toying with doomed prey.
His helm dips close enough that the heat of his vents teases against plating. " I can practically see the Transfluid leaking through your panel darling. Let us simply say you ignite...a passions that science alone could never sate."
With a cruel twist of his grip, he spins the Decepticon to face the operating table once more, pulling them flush against his chassis. His free hand running down their frame to their interface panel, “open it” he states.
A gasp escapes them as they are pressed against his chassis. Their optics linger on the Corpse on the table that Pharma had been removing parts from. "Sir you will have to try harder" they state, whining loudly as his servos dig into their hips.
Pharma throws back his helm and laughs, the harsh grating sound of grinding metal. His grip only tightens further, denting fine plating as his thumbs press cruel circles into joint lines.
Leaning down to hiss silica-laced words directly against an audial, he purrs "don't tempt me, or i'll rip that panel off myself." They whine even more, bot shuttering lightly
His free hand caresses up the panel excruciating care. Pharma wrenches their helm back to force wide optics upon the corpse's agonised rictus. "You'll come to understand: you have always, only, ever belonged to me, my dear. You can't even go a full luna cycle without me" He smiles. Lips press against their neck cabling.
Another cry comes from them as Pharma moves them towards one of the medical berths. "Pharma!" They state optics wide. "Sir if someone walks in!" They try to protest only for him to lean down. Pharma savours each movement against his servos. Their interface panel snaps open, spike pulsing as their valve clenches around nothing.
their writhing frame an epitome of beauty in unravelling. His engine rumbles in primal triumph to see one so spirited brought to glorious pieces beneath his touch, his digits tease their spike with a few lazy strokes.
Let them see” he states, not worried. He knew too well that others avoided his medical wing and for good purpose. He drags his digits down their valve pressing in with subtle thrust.
"Such eager want. your coding sings for me, does it not?" His glossa flickers out, tracing the shell of an auditory sensor. "An apt pupil, to learn so quickly, and taking rather well to the new programming"
Those skilled digits curl within, massaging nodes to wring gasping cries from his trembling assistant. His free hand roams their shivering form with surgical precision, mapping every sensitive wire and line.
talons messaging cables in their neck before gripping their face. "So needy, and only for me. With how aroused you are I bet I hold your very spark in my hand, and you'd still be a moaning mess for me." His field swells in heady triumph, and he claims their lips in a crushing kiss.
They gasp as his own interface panel snaps open pressing his spike against the plating of their thigh. Their body shutters in anticipation, optics shoot down between their body's as Pharma teases them open more.
"Primus, Pharma" they call shutter at his words. “Anyone would think you plan on cutting me open”
Pharma utters a mechanical chuckle at their words, field igniting with surging need at the glorious sight beneath him. Their willing frame laid spread underneath him.
"Tempting, my sweet, rather tempting but no" he purrs, Three of his talons tease their folds, massaging slick fluid as he presses digits deeper before pulling them away. He brings his mouth to their audio, glossa flickering against the shell. "No you belong on my spike, I would have your every sensor calibrated to receive only ecstasy."He shifts, lining himself up.
Its cruel thrust that has them fluttering around him, desperate sounds spilling from vocalizers. In one slow, relentless glide, he joins with them, deep groans of satisfaction leave him. Optics go wide as their body ceases up at Pharma's thrust. Doors on their back shutter as they arch into the table. They clench tightly around him as he thrust eagerly into them, pleading moans and static whines fall from them. They bite down against neck cables as they cling to him. "Pharma slow down please" they call out.  He claims their lips in a kiss of domination, firmly cementing your place by his side. Praise be to science’s name.
Pharma rumbles his engine at their mewling cries, though gentles the punishing pace of his thrusts in deference to the request. His field swells to the envelope of their quivering form. A taloned hand strokes their cheek plate with deceptive tenderness. His helm dips to nuzzle the joining of their neck, glossa flickering over new indentations left by his denta.
"To think, what scientific discoveries we might forge together," he rasps against your audial. "You seem rather receptive to me after the reprogramming and implant" Overload laps at their consciousness like swelling tidewaters, dragging them deeper under his spell.
Each roll of Pharma's hips has him pressing deeper into them. He lifts one of their legs angling into them at a better angle, They arch into him. The amount of thoughts that run through Pharma's processor, to fill them, watch them bulge, attempt to breed his assistant, test his theory over sparklings.
Pharma feels the younger mech tremble helplessly beneath his ministrations, sweet cries spilling like sacred hymns from their lips. Their unrestrained pleasure threatens to ignite his coding beyond all reason; never before has one responded so beautifully to the raptures of the flesh.
He captures their lips in a bruising kiss, glossa mapping their mouth with possessive fervour. "My perfect specimen," he rasps against swollen dermas. "Such glorious fulfilment you grant my research… you'd look rather stunning, carrier coding taking you"  Overload laps their awareness in tidal euphoria until the overload in a flurry of moans and cries.
His spike pressed relentlessly within their port, pulsing transfluid flooding their gestational chamber in thick spurts. Pharma moans, Pulling the quivering mech flush against his heaving chassis, Pharma savours the aftershocks, rocking into them as he breeds them. His field washes over their modified form, his coding commending the first stage of modifications for carrying to fruition.  His field sparks triumph as your gestation chamber swells further with transfluid.
"Let's hope the upgrades take hold, sweetness," he purrs against an audio, talons massaging newly-swollen tanks in languid strokes. His free hand caresses the still-filling chamber in utter rapture. "We might just have this figured out soon." His smiles against trembling lips.
"Exquisite" he purrs, talons digging into narrow hips to meet with one last punishing thrust. "To think, the discoveries we shall unveil."
His spike pulses frantically within their clutching valve, engines roaring. Never before has anything reduced the great Pharma to such feral, worshipful frenzy.
He pulls their limp frame against his heaving chassis as ecstasy's aftershocks continue rippling through their quivering form.
He nuzzles their faceplate gently, crooning praises as his field washes comfort and adoration over flushed components. "Rest now." Pharma places a reverent kiss to his assistant's forehead, servos mapping new bulges within their abdomen.
He pulls them up off the medical berth as he carries them over to his chair, he sinks down into it as they rest atop of his body, servos trace their back struts as he hums in contentment. It seemed only time would tell if the new modifications would Yield success.

Generative AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot are rapidly evolving, fueling concerns that the technology could open the door to multiple privacy and security issues, particularly in the workplace.
In May, privacy campaigners dubbed Microsoft’s new Recall tool a potential “privacy nightmare” due to its ability to take screenshots of your laptop every few seconds. The feature has caught the attention of UK regulator the Information Commissioner’s Office, which is asking Microsoft to reveal more about the safety of the product launching soon in its Copilot+ PCs.
Concerns are also mounting over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has demonstrated screenshotting abilities in its soon-to-launch macOS app that privacy experts say could result in the capture of sensitive data.
The US House of Representatives has banned the use of Microsoft’s Copilot among staff members after it was deemed by the Office of Cybersecurity to be a risk to users due to “the threat of leaking House data to non-House approved cloud services.”
Meanwhile, market analyst Gartner has cautioned that “using Copilot for Microsoft 365 exposes the risks of sensitive data and content exposure internally and externally.” And last month, Google was forced to make adjustments to its new search feature, AI Overviews, after screenshots of bizarre and misleading answers to queries went viral.
Overexposed
For those using generative AI at work, one of the biggest challenges is the risk of inadvertently exposing sensitive data. Most generative AI systems are “essentially big sponges,” says Camden Woollven, group head of AI at risk management firm GRC International Group. “They soak up huge amounts of information from the internet to train their language models.”
AI companies are “hungry for data to train their models,” and are “seemingly making it behaviorally attractive” to do so, says Steve Elcock, CEO and founder at software firm Elementsuite. This vast amount of data collection means there’s the potential for sensitive information to be put “into somebody else’s ecosystem,” says Jeff Watkins, chief product and technology officer at digital consultancy xDesign. “It could also later be extracted through clever prompting.”
At the same time, there’s the threat of AI systems themselves being targeted by hackers. “Theoretically, if an attacker managed to gain access to the large language model (LLM) that powers a company's AI tools, they could siphon off sensitive data, plant false or misleading outputs, or use the AI to spread malware,” says Woollven.
Consumer-grade AI tools can create obvious risks. However, an increasing number of potential issues are arising with “proprietary” AI offerings broadly deemed safe for work such as Microsoft Copilot, says Phil Robinson, principal consultant at security consultancy Prism Infosec.
“This could theoretically be used to look at sensitive data if access privileges have not been locked down. We could see employees asking to see pay scales, M&A activity, or documents containing credentials, which could then be leaked or sold.”
Another concern centers around AI tools that could be used to monitor staff, potentially infringing their privacy. Microsoft’s Recall feature states that “your snapshots are yours; they stay locally on your PC” and “you are always in control with privacy you can trust.”
Yet “it doesn’t seem very long before this technology could be used for monitoring employees,” says Elcock.
Self-Censorship
Generative AI does pose several potential risks, but there are steps businesses and individual employees can take to improve privacy and security. First, do not put confidential information into a prompt for a publicly available tool such as ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, says Lisa Avvocato, vice president of marketing and community at data firm Sama.
When crafting a prompt, be generic to avoid sharing too much. “Ask, ‘Write a proposal template for budget expenditure,’ not ‘Here is my budget, write a proposal for expenditure on a sensitive project,’” she says. “Use AI as your first draft, then layer in the sensitive information you need to include.”
If you use it for research, avoid issues such as those seen with Google’s AI Overviews by validating what it provides, says Avvocato. “Ask it to provide references and links to its sources. If you ask AI to write code, you still need to review it, rather than assuming it’s good to go.”
Microsoft has itself stated that Copilot needs to be configured correctly and the “least privilege”—the concept that users should only have access to the information they need—should be applied. This is “a crucial point,” says Prism Infosec’s Robinson. “Organizations must lay the groundwork for these systems and not just trust the technology and assume everything will be OK.”
It’s also worth noting that ChatGPT uses the data you share to train its models, unless you turn it off in the settings or use the enterprise version.
List of Assurances
The firms integrating generative AI into their products say they’re doing everything they can to protect security and privacy. Microsoft is keen to outline security and privacy considerations in its Recall product and the ability to control the feature in Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
Google says generative AI in Workspace “does not change our foundational privacy protections for giving users choice and control over their data,” and stipulates that information is not used for advertising.
OpenAI reiterates how it maintains security and privacy in its products, while enterprise versions are available with extra controls. “We want our AI models to learn about the world, not private individuals—and we take steps to protect people’s data and privacy,” an OpenAI spokesperson tells WIRED.
OpenAI says it offers ways to control how data is used, including self-service tools to access, export, and delete personal information, as well as the ability to opt out of use of content to improve its models. ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, and its API are not trained on data or conversations, and its models don’t learn from usage by default, according to the company.
Either way, it looks like your AI coworker is here to stay. As these systems become more sophisticated and omnipresent in the workplace, the risks are only going to intensify, says Woollven. “We're already seeing the emergence of multimodal AI such as GPT-4o that can analyze and generate images, audio, and video. So now it's not just text-based data that companies need to worry about safeguarding.”
With this in mind, people—and businesses—need to get in the mindset of treating AI like any other third-party service, says Woollven. “Don't share anything you wouldn't want publicly broadcasted.”

Good mornthing!
A friend reached out to me this week, asking if I still do Circular Gallifreyan artwork. It has been a long time, but I always enjoy doing those designs, so I asked him what he needed. Turns out, he is participating in a secret Santa at his workplace, and wanted to give his recipient something with the recipient’s name on it, in Circular Gallifreyan.
I have always done it by hand before, but he was interested in something more crisp/digital. I have a tablet now, so I downloaded an art program and mucked around with it last night for a while. It does a lot of things I expected, with the bonus of having a circular ruler which pretty much exploded open a world of possibility for me. Even with the learning process and discovering I’d left a bunch of artifacting on my base layer while in the process of just learning the tools and tap/gesture requirements, I knocked out a full name CG design in barely over two hours, and can do future ones more quickly now that I’ve learned the basics of the program.
I’m not going to share the one I did last night because it is someone’s name, but I do want to share. Anybody got a word/phrase for me to try in Circular Gallifreyan?

Whether you call it “tattleware,” “bossware,” or “surveillance capitalism,” Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) has had enough of exploitative workplace monitoring technologies. Late last week, Casey and a handful of other Senate Democrats introduced the Stop Spying Bosses Act, which would help protect workers from intrusive employer surveillance both on and off the clock.
The legislation would require “timely and public” disclosures by companies about the data they’re collecting on employees, prohibit businesses from using surveillance practices that obstruct union organizing or monitor workers while they’re off the clock, and create a new division of the Department of Labor to regulate workplace surveillance. Sens. Cory Booker, John Fetterman, Elizabeth Warren, and Brian Schatz are cosponsoring the bill, which has also garnered support from some major labor groups.
Workplace surveillance has been a growing area of concern for Democrats in the past few years, as the shift to remote work during the pandemic has prompted increased use of employee monitoring technologies. Since the onset of the pandemic, the percentage of large companies that digitally monitor their workers has doubled, to more than 60%. At a time when managers can no longer keep an eye on workers in the office, they’ve increasingly relied on technologies such as keylogger software, geolocation tools that track workers’ physical movements, and even software that monitors worker attentiveness with webcams, using biometric data to scrutinize minute body movements and facial expressions.
Currently, federal law gives workers few protections from these kinds of surveillance practices. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 does have some safeguards against workplace monitoring, but it has wide-ranging exceptions that allow employers to keep tabs on virtually all communications for “legitimate business purposes.” Currently, no federal law requires employers to disclose that they are monitoring workers, though individual states are increasingly taking steps to protect workers’ rights. In May 2022, for example, New York passed a law requiring private companies to publicly disclose whether employees will be electronically monitored, following similar legislation in Delaware and Connecticut. In California, a bill introduced last year would eliminate tools like facial recognition and emotion recognition technologies from the workplace.
The National Labor Relations Board is beginning to address the issue at the federal level, too. Last fall, the agency’s general counsel, Jennifer Abruzzo, issued a memo indicating that companies have overreached with their aggressive surveillance. She recommended that the NLRB impose a requirement that employers tell workers about the surveillance tools they use to monitor them, the justifications for those tools, and how they use the information they collect from workers.
In the memo, Abruzzo also acknowledged “abusive electronic monitoring” could interfere with employees’ right to organize a union or engage in other protected labor activities. As I’ve written before, unions around the country are currently in the middle of negotiating how data collected on workers can be used by employers. At companies like Amazon, unionization efforts are being driven partly by a culture of relentless workplace surveillance—and in some cases employers are responding to unionization efforts by doubling down on digital monitoring. Whole Foods, which is owned by Amazon, used heat maps to identify its stores at risk of unionization, according to Insider.
While the bill isn’t likely to pass in a divided Congress, it’s a sign that the proliferation of workplace surveillance during the pandemic is finally getting more national attention. “As the power imbalance in workplaces continues to grow, employers are increasingly using invasive surveillance technologies that allow them to track their workers like pieces of equipment,” Casey said in a statement introducing the legislation. “The Stop Spying Bosses Act is a first step to level the playing field for workers by holding their bosses accountable.”

𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒: the room drowned in silence, yet it didn't felt awkward for either of the two people inside; as words were not necessarily needed, both of them knew their feelings very well.

Zenas had been trying to find Lee for a couple of hours by now but, to his own bad luck, he kept on getting dragged by others for whatever reasons. Check a new mission brief, dealing with other Commandants and their questions about how it was possible that he could deal with the corrupted with his bare hands, and the list grew endlessly.
Patience was a virtue and Zenas clearly lacked that one. It was growing too thin and he knew, if someone dared to block his path again, he would have to fill up a complaint and hand it to Hassen sooner than later. So, as usual, he wore his favourite face, frown eyebrows, walking with long strides, eyes focused on the front and with the peculiar aura he always carries with himself that screamed “no friendly for anyone”.
And, as usual, it worked. Zenas could reach Gray Raven's lounge. Lucia and Liv had already left to help Celica with some paperwork, since having some free time on Babylonia counted as some sort of sin that needed to be repentant. The place was in complete darkness and silence, however, some rattling noises could be heard from behind Lee's door.
He was here. Someone's heart beating off the usual calm track, but it's not like Zenas didn't notice. Because that's the effect Lee had over him, completely weak and unable to form proper sentences sometimes, to the point he would just keep quiet and watch him work. Peacefully, heaven might be just that.
He knocked the door twice, and waited. A muffled voice answered him, letting Zenas know it was okay to come in, and so he did. Swiftly closing the door behind, his eyes traced every single corner of that, already well known, room. Digital screens showing maps, some of them had red spots marked in specific parts, others filled with just zeros and ones, as well as words and codes the human failed to understand.
The two desks, completely covered in screwdrivers, nuts, cables of various colours, parts of an outdated terminal, papers scattered on the surface and weapons's parts. Lee was sitting behind one of it, a small nightstand illuminating his workplace, his mechanical arm was resting over the desk, and with his free hand, Lee seemed to do some basic repairs.
His blue eyes never lost focus, concentrated at his fullest; it was one of Zenas's favourite traits of Lee. He could trust his teammate to always deliver something of great quality, be it new optimization to his exosuit, repair of his weapon and many more things. He let out a sigh, not out of tiredness, but something else.
ㅤㅤㅤ“What is it, Commandant?” Lee asked, not looking at him.
Zenas hates that title but it still sounded pretty coming from him, as some sort of assertiveness, a bit silly though.
ㅤㅤㅤ“Nothing. Just wanted to know if you were okay. You've been too quiet lately and it bugs me.” Zenas closed the distance, picked the only free chair left and placed it close to Lee, but still leaving enough room to not make him uncomfortable.
ㅤㅤㅤ“I don't remember being too talkative, or am I?” Lee picked a different tool, he was frowning.
ㅤㅤㅤ“You know what I mean.” Zenas replied, he grabbed an USB driver and took a look at it. It was blue, Lee's favourite colour and was slowly becoming his, too. “I feel like you never tell me, us, anything. Sure, you have your reasons but I hope you know you can trust us. Always.” he finished placing the USB back to the desk.
The room was filled with silence, again. Unspoken words, but it was clear that Zenas still hit the jackpot. They had been working together for so long to the point words are not always necessary between them. This time made no difference whatsoever. Zenas knew Lee had been going through something complicated, shouldering it all by himself, as he always did, but this time seemed different.
He was no expert in reading others, but Zenas learned how to understand his teammates and that's the reason why they complemented each other so well. Lee may be a quiet man, he wouldn't talk unless necessary or if being asked something, and if he did it was just to explain a mission, engineer or binary code. However, it was easy to tell there was something going on he was unwilling to share.
Zenas had to admit that pissed him off, a lot. Yet he understood there must be a reason for such behaviour and decisions. He just wanted to know that Lee was okay, and to make sure of one important factor…
ㅤㅤㅤ“You're not alone anymore, you do know that, right?” he questioned at the same time he placed one of his hands over Lee's. Making his stop right in the middle of his job. “We are here, with you.” Zenas's thumb slowly caresses Lee's synthetic skin.
Lee looked up this time. Making eye contact for the first time since Zenas came inside his room. The physical contact was minimal, and if it wasn't because Lee's skin was quite sensitive he wouldn't have even noticed the small act of affection. An act Zenas never did, to anyone. The human’s eyes were always a mystery to the Construct, not only in matter of colour but because they either showed too much, or anything at all.
Zenas's eyes either were full of hatred, annoyance or just empty shells. Not this time, and that's why Lee's mechanical heart seemed to malfunction, the rhythm was a bit off, and he knew his cheeks would end up turning red. He tried his best to think of something else but his M.I.N.D was blank, weirdly enough.
Ever since they met, Lee fully understood his Commandant was considered a really pretty human, violently beautiful. And the more he got to know him, the more he felt drawn towards him, gravitating around, thinking about him too much, letting the human take control of his feelings. He also understood he had to keep all that to himself.
But at some point, both of them knew it. It came to a point where trying to hide it was impossible, especially when they're burning for each other, when their skin screamed each other's name.
It was just a minute, probably, or maybe two, but for the two people inside of that room, it felt like an entire life just ran past them. However none of the two wanted to look away first. Lee was not sure when or how he got the courage, or how his body just did something without his consent, acting too much like a human out of impulse. But he did it either way.
Leaning towards Zenas, closing the distance between the two bodies, yet maintaining eye contact. Lips finally touching.
